BOYWITHUKE & OLIVER TREE DROP AMERICAN PSYCHO-INSPIRED MUSIC VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE “SICK OF U” OUT NOW

LISTEN TO “Sick Of U” HERE
WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

Gold-selling singer, songwriter, and producer BoyWithUke unveils the cinematic music video for his latest single “Sick Of U” feat. Oliver Tree, out now via Mercury Records/Republic Records—watch HERE

In the visual for “Sick of U,” BoyWithUke and Oliver Tree reimagine a classic scene from American Psycho with a twist. BoyWithUke does his best Patrick Bateman impersonation as he hacks up his guest—who sings back to him from a trash bag and while the dirt covers his final resting place. It matches the manic push and pull of this rapidly rising anthem from this dynamic duo.

BoyWithUke built anticipation for the track on social media prior to its arrival. He teased the song on TikTok with a series of posts, generating millions of views on videos of a bloody Oliver Tree in BoyWithUke’s signature mask and even getting his instantly recognizable hairstyle straightened. As for the song itself, the alternative pop disruptor breaks boundaries once again, dipping in and out of glitchy production punctuated by tightly threaded organic instrumentation. Meanwhile, he and Oliver Tree trade catchy lines worthy of the ultimate breakup text. Building towards an emotional sendoff, BoyWithUke reminds, “Life goes on and on.

BoyWithUke continues racing towards a major mainstream breakthrough. His following has grown beyond 6 million on TikTok, 2.5 million on YouTube, and 2.2 million on Spotify. His full-length debut album, Serotonin Dreams, only fueled this explosion. Beyond tallying hundreds of millions of streams, The Honey Pop hailed it as “the album of our dreams” and raved, “each song on Serotonin Dreams snakes into our minds in a different way, making some of our deepest emotions feel understood and making some of our favorite playlists feel like they just found a new winner to add.”

Serotonin Dreams features collaborations with various artists, including blackbear (“IDGAF”), mxmtoon (“Prairies”), and Powfu (“Contigo”). Consequence declared BoyWithUke has proven himself to be particularly prolific” and “‘Understand’ shows potential to be the next of BoyWithUke’s hits.” Leading up to the anxiously awaited release of Serotonin DreamsBoyWithUke dropped his viral singles “Long Drives” and IDGAF feat. blackbearBillboard praised “IDGAF” as “a gently heartbroken kiss-off anthem about moving on from a toxic ex,” while Ones To Watch described it as “perfectly petty in all the right ways, BoyWithUke and black bear match earworm, radio-ready production with unapologetic low blows.” Indie Shuffle proclaimed, BoyWithUke has slowly become a household name in the indie music scene; now working with Blackbear, the combo of melancholia and high-energy pop has made for a gallery of pure entertainment and an addictive earworm at that!”

The tracks followed BoyWithUke’s 2021 gold-certified smash hit “Toxic,” which has amassed over 1.2 billion global streams to date and peaked at #1 on the Alternative Radio Chart for two consecutive weeks. Not to mention, his record-breaking live performance of the song for Genius’ Open Mic series is the platform’s “the #1 most-viewed video on Genius with over 86 million views and counting.

Earlier this summer, BoyWithUke sold out his first-ever headline shows in New York and Los Angeles.

You may be sick of your ex, but you’ll never be sick of BoyWithUke and Oliver Tree!

About BoyWithUke
What do we know about BoyWithUke? If you quickly scan TikTok, you can figure out he is a musical artist who writes and produces all of his own music, creating songs in his dorm room on GarageBand while hiding his face from the public with his now signature glowing mask. Take a deeper look, and you’ll see he frequently posts “minute long songs,” many times written in response to requests from fans. His biggest hit to date was written after a fan commented “make a song about toxic friends plzzzx,” and the response was the song “Toxic.” The song describes how it feels when you realize all your friends are terrible people (people you’d probably be better off without), but the thought of being alone makes you feel even worse. The song has taken over as it vaulted into the Top 10 at Alternative Radio and has reached nearly 1.2 billion global streams to date. Not to mention, his performance of “Toxic” has emerged as the platform’s second highest-viewed Genius video to date with nearly 60 million views and counting. Up next, he will be continuing his sold out international headline tour and releasing his debut album Serotonin Dreams that features new single “IDGAF” ft. blackbear. The project will be the follow up to previous full length projects Melatonin Dreams, Fever Dreams, Trouvaille EP, and his latest Faded EP (featuring numerous songs created from his TikTok “minute long songs” project).

Sommerro in Oslo via 360 MAGAZINE

Oslo Hotels

It’s no secret that Oslo is a frontrunner for one of the top getaways in the world this year, with every corner of the happy city full of delicious seafood, exciting cultural offerings, and captivating hotel options. The city is experiencing a surge in new art galleries, restaurants, theaters, shops, and museums, including the new National Museum and Munch Museum, further solidifying its place as the cultural epicenter of Northern Europe and one of the hottest destinations to visit now.

Host to a diverse set of accommodation offerings, each with its own distinct personality and experiential programming, visitors can choose their own Oslo adventure based on the type of trip they want to create.

Some top hotel options include:

  • An Art Deco Cultural Immersion at the Brand New Sommerro:
    • The new place to stay in Norway’s capital, the 231-room Sommerro officially opened its doors in Frogner, a historic neighborhood in Oslo’s West End, on September 1. Set within the former headquarters of Oslo Lysverker, the city’s original electrical company and a 1930s landmark, the hotel presents a trifecta of “first and only” – it is the city’s only Art Deco hotel, its first neighborhood hotel outside of the city center, and the country’s largest-ever preservation project. Guests will enjoy the grandeur of Sommerro’s custom furnishings and artwork contrasted with a sleek new modern rooftop space that includes TAK Oslo, a Nordic-Japanese restaurant helmed by chef Frida Ronge that is one of seven on-property restaurants and bars, a sauna, and Oslo’s only year-round rooftop pool with some of the best views in the city. Inspired by Frogner’s classic and creative neighborhood spirit, Sommerro serves as an open and inspiring house for all, where visitors can enjoy a dynamic range of immersive programming and activities including a residency with jazz musician and composer Maren Selvaag, an extensive art collection curated by acclaimed museum director and art critic Sune Nordgren, the largest wellbeing space of any city hotel across the Nordic countries, boat trips with KOK floating saunas, and more. Nightly rates at Sommerro start from USD$250 based on double occupancy and include breakfast. For more information, visit Sommerrohouse.com.
  • A Historic City Center Escape at Amerikalinjen:
    • Occupying one of the city’s most recognizable buildings, Amerikalinjen opened its doors in March 2019 on Jernbanetorget Square, adjacent to the bustling Central Station in downtown Oslo and just a short stride from the new Munch Museum and Deichman Library’s newly renovated flagship. Originally the headquarters for the Norwegian America Line that transported Norwegians across the Atlantic to the New World, the iconic building, which dates to 1919, has since been transformed into a modern-day marvel with luxurious accommodations, delicious dining, a chic jazz club, locally crafted amenities, and impeccable, personalized service. The surprisingly intimate 122-room property is layered with equal doses of subtle nostalgic references and forward-thinking design, and is defined not only by its accommodations, but also a standout offering of buzzy restaurants and bars, including Pier 42 – voted Best Cocktail Bar in Norway in 2021 and 2022 – which is led and managed by Adrián Michalčík who was recently named the Diageo World Class Global Bartender of the Year. Nightly rates at Amerikalinjen start at US$250 based upon double occupancy. For more information, visit Amerikalinjen.com.
  • The Ultimate Art & Spa Resort Experience at THE THIEF:
    • A luxury waterfront hideaway located on “Thief Island” near downtown Oslo, THE THIEF is the crown jewel of this city-meets-sea peninsula that has been transformed from an islet hideout for local bandits to an ultra-trendy arts district. Here, guests will find carefully selected furniture and top international art pieces gracing the hotel’s walls, creating a chic, museum-like atmosphere. Its permanent collection was curated by the former director of Norway’s National Museum of Art, and its lounge hosts stylish events including concerts, fashion shows, and book launches. Taking advantage of the stunning harbor views of the Oslofjord and the surrounding sea breeze, the THIEF ROOF FOODBAR is open to guests throughout the summer months, where they will be greeted with live music, contemporary Nordic cuisine, signature cocktails, tailored service and more. The hotel also plays host to a sleek spa, which is connected to the property via an underground walkway so guests can remain in complete privacy as they indulge in a plush robe and glass of bubbles on their way to a decadent and relaxing body scrub treatment – the perfect urban escape.  Nightly rates at THE THIEF start at US$300 based upon double occupancy. LOKI × MADAME TUSSAUDS

LOKI OF ASGARD WAX FIGURE COMES TO MADAME TUSSAUDS NEW YORK WITH GLORIOUS PURPOSE

Loki Makes Worldwide Debut at New York Comic Con Before Arriving in Times Square, Adding a Little Mischief to the World’s Greatest Wax Museum

Loki, God of Mischief, is teleporting straight to Madame Tussauds New York in Times Square after an official debut at New York Comic Con. The Loki figure is inspired by his character from the quintessential ‘Battle of New York’ sequence featured in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers (2012), making New York City the perfect home for The God of Mischief. To celebrate the arrival, Madame Tussauds placed the Loki figure in front of Grand Central Terminal, an iconic view immediately recognizable by Marvel fans as the site of the battle and one of the most historic New York City landmarks. The notorious Asgardian trickster is sporting his classic headpiece, glowing scepter and green and gold cloak. No, this Loki is not shape-shifting, but strikingly based on the likeness of English actor Tom Hiddleston.

“We’re so excited to introduce everybody’s favorite villain, Loki, into the Hall of Heroes,” said Madame Tussauds New York Marketing Executive Ben Shapiro. “The Loki figure will live around the corner – but never in the shadow – of his brother and frequent foe Thor. We know fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be beyond thrilled to encounter the mischievous Prince of Asgard at Madame Tussauds New York.”

Each figure created by Madame Tussauds represents people, characters and icons who have reached the top of their field or made a significant impact on the world or within the pop-culture zeitgeist. As one of the all time favorite arch-supervillains turned anti-hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki is the perfect character to receive the ‘royal’ wax figure treatment and stand amongst other Marvel Super Heroes, including Black Panther, Spider-Man, Thor – God of Thunder and the legendary creator Stan Lee. Tom Hiddleston’s iconic character is featured in more than six feature films, as well as the eponymous role in the live-action series Marvel Studios’ Loki (2021) on Disney+.

“Our teams at Marvel and Madame Tussauds have been working together for years to bring some of our most iconic characters to life, so we’re thrilled to see Loki join their lineup of Marvel Super Heroes for fans to see for themselves in New York,” said Brian Crosby, Director of Themed Entertainment Development at Marvel. “We can’t wait to unveil the first look for this Loki figure during New York Comic Con this year at the Marvel booth.”

This latest wax figure installation comes on the heels of the recently added Marvel Universe 4D cinema experience and an expansion to the MARVEL Hall of Heroes, both part of a multimillion-dollar investment into North America’s flagship Madame Tussauds attraction.

ABOUT MADAME TUSSAUDS NEW YORK

RISING NEWCOMERS JORDAN WARD & JOONY SAY “IDC” IN NEW SINGLE

Jordan Ward To Perform At Soho Warehouse in Los Angeles Next Week

Buzzy R&B tastemakers Jordan Ward (ARTium Recordings/Interscope Records) & Joony leap into their next era with today’s release of the smooth new single, “IDC”. The two collab on the floating, lo-fi melodic track as they trade carefree verses about letting their ex’s exit their lives. Lo-fi also colors the song’s official music video, in which the pair comically run into their exes but get the last laugh as they run through New York City.

Watch the full video HERE.

“IDC” builds on the momentum that Jordan scored with last year’s Remain Calm EP and the millions of streams it produced. The five-track collection put the St. Louis native’s versatility on full display, swapping from rap bars on “Steph” to the R&B gem “Couscous.” Storied publications took notice, with Billboard highlighting the latter track as “a deliciously layered deep cut,” while HotNewHipHop praised the EP overall as a “short but very sweet” effort. Soon after the EP’s release, Jordan gifted fans his Lil Baby Doc, a six-minute documentary that reveals an intimate look at Jordan’s creative process in the studio while enjoying life with his friends. Watch HERE. Plus, as part of the single’s release celebration, Jordan will perform a showcase at the exclusive Soho Warehouse in Los Angeles on Oct. 10.

As he steps his new era, Jordan Ward continues to draw acclaim as one of R&B’s rising stars. While his 2017 debut EP, A Peak at the Summit, made noise, his clear breakthrough came with his 2019 project, Valley Hopefuls. It was propelled by his single “Okok (Hibachi)” and “Sandiego,” which was produced by singer Arin Ray and music producer heavyweight No ID. Now, with more than 25 million streams and counting, Ward’s silky croons and elevated songwriting pen are sharper than ever and ready to launch him to even greater heights in the R&B realm.

Establishing himself through a series of EPs and full-length albums, Joony amassed a substantial audience before his placement on Brent Faiyaz‘s chart-topping album, Wasteland. Joony’s verse on “FYTB” was a standout moment on the project and marked Joony’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The poignant record came on the heels of his critically acclaimed album, Pretty In Black. After the release of Pretty In Black (Deluxe), the 22-year-old rapper asserted himself in 2022’s album of the year consideration.

MUSE, ROLLS-ROYCE ARTS PROGRAMME UNVEILS WINNING ARTWORKS INSPIRED BY THE SPIRIT OF ECSTASY

 ·        Muse, the Rolls-Royce Arts Programme, unveils artworks created by winners of the inaugural Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge – a biennial initiative celebrating the symbol of Rolls‑Royce

·       Three winners, selected by an expert jury, have created textile artworks inspired by Rolls-Royce and the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine

·       Works by Bi Rongrong, Ghizlane Sahli and Scarlett Yang are on show in an exhibition at Cromwell Place, London from 5 – 8 October 2022, before proceeding on a global tour

@rollsroycemuse

“The Spirit of Ecstasy continues to be our muse for the ongoing pursuit of excellence. She embodies what we as the House of Rolls-Royce stand for: strive for perfection, attention to detail and timeless beauty. It is fascinating to see our icon being transformed into these three very unique expressions, pushing technical and conceptual boundaries. I would like to thank Bi Rongrong, Ghizlane Sahli and Scarlett Yang for their extraordinary masterpieces celebrating a different dimension of our iconic figurine, manifesting the exciting future of textile design.”

Anders Warming, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Muse, the Rolls-Royce Arts Programme celebrates the global debut of the artworks created by the winners of the Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge. These three unique pieces are being exhibited at Cromwell Place, London, from 5 – 8 October 2022, before embarking on an international tour.

The Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge is a new biennial initiative that invites emerging artists from a range of disciplines to create artworks inspired the Rolls-Royce icon – the beautiful figurine that has adorned the bonnet of every motor car created by the marque since 1911. Each edition of the Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge will focus on a different medium, challenging participants to push technical and conceptual boundaries. The inaugural 2022 edition explores the potential of textiles, inviting artists to create textile-based artwork.

The winners – Bi Rongrong, Ghizlane Sahli and Scarlett Yang – developed three unique interpretations of the Rolls-Royce symbol. As part of the creative process, the artists met Rolls-Royce’s master craftspeople to exchange experiences before bringing their ideas and innovative creations to life.

BI RONGRONG – STITCHED URBAN SKIN

Stitched Urban Skin (2022) is inspired by the multi-layered landscape of cities and their mesmerising reflections on the glossy surface of the Spirit of Ecstasy. Old and new are woven together: the artwork consists of three suspended layers of two-dimensional sheets made from specially treated metal, an animated LED light sheet and a Perspex sheet incorporating a material created using a traditional Chinese crochet technique. The use of metal in the work is inspired by the Rolls-Royce car surface and pays homage to the exceptional craftsmanship at The Home of Rolls-Royce.  The piece draws on Bi’s encyclopaedic archive of urban imagery, utilising both ancient craftsmanship and innovative technologies, interlacing different locations and histories.

“This piece wasn’t inspired by a singular thing, it’s a blend of patterns connected to cities and nature – the way they grow is very similar. People see only what’s on the surface – the architecture and the trees – but underneath are hidden interwinding roots”, said Bi. She continued: “The Rolls-Royce team gave me full artistic freedom, encouraging me to try new things and be truly brave. I experimented and changed the whole piece many times, which eventually made it even more captivating. This experience has presented me with new possibilities and opened up a different perspective which I will bring into my future work”.

GHIZLANE SAHLI – NISSA’S RINA (WOMAN’S SONG)

Resembling two triumphant wings about to take flight, Sahli’s artwork Nissa’s Rina (Woman’s Song) (2022) is a joyous celebration of femininity and freedom. The artwork explores the beauty of metamorphose and is composed almost entirely of salvaged materials: plastic bottles, plastic tubes, caps, covered with white silk and gold thread purchased from the artisans in Marrakech’s Medina and copper embellished with gold leaf. For Nissa’s Rina (Woman’s Song), Sahli adopts her signature technique of wrapping cut bottles in thread, the “Alveoli”, and building up each element into wing-like structures evocative of the Spirit of Ecstasy.

“The Spirit of Ecstasy – that elegant, free woman who crowns the most prestigious car in the world. A symbol of power, she opens her wings to take flight, and rules the world. What a synchronicity for me! She embodies everything that I would like to express in my life today”, – said Sahli. “Nissa’s Rina, Woman’s song, aims to express the elegance, the femininity, and the freedom of the Spirit of Ecstasy”.

SCARLETT YANG – TRANSIENT MATERIALITY (2022)

Scarlett Yang’s Transient Materiality (2022) is a hybrid work that consists of a physical and digital piece. The 1-metre-high sculpture is made of intertwining ribbons of synthetic biopolymer produced with liquid particles collected from the ocean and bound with algae photosynthetic organisms. The sculpture’s form, surface and colour all reflect the natural world: its unique texture was inspired the subtle intricacy of animal skin patterns and the structural resilience of translucent dragonfly wings. Made by pouring the liquid bio-polymer into a 3D-fabricated mould, while the ribbons’ green and purple hues were created through experiments with spirulina and other natural components.

Suspended in the air, the piece mesmerizes with its shimmering, iridescent qualities – an ethereal expression of elegance, reminiscent of the flying gown of the Spirit of Ecstasy. The accompanying digital element is a video documentation of the creative process as well as digital renderings of the sculpture, set to a futuristic soundscape.

“My work consists in exploring the physical properties that nature gracefully offers and enhancing them through a conscious and circular use of technology. The piece ‘Transient Materiality” is ultimately meant to embellish the human body whilst serving a truly positive approach for the future of design”, – commented Scarlett Yang.

The artists, invited to create their proposals for the Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge, were nominated by an international expert committee. Their submissions were reviewed by a renowned jury consisting of Anders Warming, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars; Yoon Ahn, Creative Director of AMBUSH and Director of Jewellery at Dior Men; Tim Marlow, Chief Executive and Director at the Design Museum, London; and Sumayya Vally, Founder and Principal at Counterspace Studio, Johannesburg. In April 2022 Muse announced the three winners who were chosen to bring their concept to life with the Rolls-Royce support.

The Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge is the second commissioning initiative of Muse. While the Dream Commission supports artists working with moving-image art, the Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge celebrating the endless creativity within the world of materials and craftsmanship. Every two years, the Challenge will be repeated, each time exploring the limitless possibilities of a different medium key to Rolls-Royce craftsmanship, with the Spirit of Ecstasy serving as a point of inspiration.

UFW PAYS FARM WORKERS $600

UFW Foundation to Distribute One-Time $600 Payment to Farm Workers for Pandemic Relief

Applications are not available at this time; details on how to apply through UFW Foundation will be forthcoming

The United States Department of Agriculture today announced that the UFW Foundation has been selected as a grantee for the Farm and Food Worker Relief (FFWR) Grant Program to provide a one-time $600 payment to agriculture workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UFW Foundation will have seven subrecipient organizations that will also be providing critical outreach and application support to workers.

The program was designed to provide relief to farm workers, meatpacking workers and front-line grocery workers for expenses incurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Details of eligibility criteria to qualify for the $600 one-time payment will be forthcoming. The application period start date is yet to be determined.

Relief payments will be available to eligible frontline workers in farming activities, meatpacking, and grocery store work during the period extending from January 27, 2020 until the emergency period has been declared over. Eligibility requirements include identity and employment verification, and immigration status is not a factor. There is no cost to apply for the Farm and Food Workers Relief (FFWR). Only organizations awarded the grant by the USDA may process Farm and Food Workers Relief (FFWR) applications. Potential applicants are reminded to not provide personal documents or any form of identification to unapproved organizations. The organizations listed on the USDA website are the only entities selected to provide these funds.

The UFW Foundation worked tirelessly to advance legislation that would empower USDA to support farm workers throughout the pandemic. COVID-19 Congress relief packages failed to provide pandemic assistance to millions of undocumented persons, many of whom pay taxes through Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers and continued laboring during the pandemic, including farm workers. That is why UFW Foundation has been advocating for farm worker pandemic relief—making it known that even though farm workers are essential workers, they haven’t been treated as such. Additionally, unlike other workers, farm workers federally do not qualify for overtime pay, typically receive low wages, and experience poor working conditions.

Below is the list of the UFW Foundation’s subrecipients for the USDA FFWR Program:

CIERTO

Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP)

Bienestar Oregon

Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN)

United Farm Workers (UFW)

Farmworker Association of Florida

North Carolina Focus on Increasing Education Leadership and Dignity (NC FIELD)

“The COVID-19 pandemic left our most essential workers to fend for themselves with no federal aid, low pay, dangerous working conditions, and little to no economic safety nets,” said UFW Foundation Executive Director Diana Tellefson Torres. “And yet, farm workers continued risking their lives for all of us to have food on our tables. We applaud the Biden-Harris Administration, Secretary Vilsack and USDA for recognizing the vital role of farm workers in the nation’s food security and economy through this program. Pandemic relief payments will make a significant impact in the day to day lives of farm workers affected by the pandemic. We have a lot of work ahead of us to ensure this much-needed pandemic relief reaches the hands of farm workers across the nation.”

ABOUT THE BLACK CROWES:

In 1990, when journalists were lamenting the death of rock, as cheesy pop and hair metal dominated the charts, Atlanta’s Black Crowes gave the genre a swift and much needed kick in the ass with Shake Your Money Maker. Fueled by singles “Jealous Again,” “Twice As Hard,” “She Talks To Angels,” and the break-through cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” the band immediately took the rock world by storm, topping Rolling Stone’s “Best New American Band Readers Poll” in late 1990. The Black Crowes went on to release eight studio and four live albums, selling in the tens of millions along the way; they sold out shows around the world; had legendary guitarist Jimmy Page join as a member; got kicked off a tour with ZZ Top for insulting the sponsor; got screwed by bad record deals; got married and divorced, fought amongst themselves and against the rest of the world. In other words, they’ve done everything a legendary rock group should do. For more information, please follow @theblackcrowes or visit www.TheBlackCrowes.com

Looking out and seeing all of the different generations of Judd fans was such an emotional experience. They sang every word to every song… which reminds me just how timeless Judd music is. I’m so grateful.” – Wynonna Judd

Wynonna and Naomi Judd brought a fresh acoustic sound to country music, with unmistakable harmonies surrounding Wynonna’s powerful lead vocals. The Judds are often celebrated for a rarely interrupted stretch of 14 No. 1 hits when every single of theirs released by RCA landed in the Billboard Top 10; and a career that defined what it means to be individualists in the music business. The Judds dominated touring in the 80s with 20 Top 10 hits, have sold more than 20 million albums and blazed a trail for duos and women who have followed them. Together, The Judds have 16 Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum albums and longform videos, led by 2x Platinum albums Why Not Me and The Judds Greatest Hits. Their stripped-back style revived the popularity of acoustic sounds in country music and opened up the genre for more traditional approaches.

THE MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT NAMES GERMANE BARNES via 360 MAGAZINE

THE MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT NAMES GERMANE BARNES

WINNER OF THE 2022 ANNUAL NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSION

Barnes’ winning installation, Rock | Roll, is designed to celebrate the communities who shape Miami’s vibrant, one-of-a-kind culture

Today the Miami Design District is pleased to announce that Germane Barnes has been awarded the 2022 Miami Design District Annual Neighborhood Commission. Following a competitive, invitation-only proposal process directed by curators Anava Projects, Miami Design District has selected the Miami-based architect’s concept, Rock | Roll, to be realized across the neighborhood’s public spaces, debuting in November for Miami Art Week and extending into the new year.

The curatorial brief for the year, Something to Talk About, called for neighborhood-wide site-specific design interventions that spotlight Miami-centric stories while also enlivening visitors’ experience of the Miami Design District during its busiest season. In response, Barnes conceived Rock | Roll as a multifaceted, multi-scale installation that draws on the vibrant visual language of Miami Carnival to honor the BIPOC communities that have substantially contributed to Miami’s one-of-a-kind, polyethnic culture, from the city’s earliest foundations to today.

For the neighborhood’s central pedestrian corridors, Barnes designed a series of whimsical, larger-than-life seating capsules that rock back-and-forth when activated by users and feature colorful, shaggy surfaces reminiscent of Carnival’s hallmark feathered costumes. With a nod to steel drums and the infectious joy of Soca music, Barnes has also designed brightly hued wind chimes, hundreds of which will be hung like melody-making ornaments in the lush native trees and palms planted throughout the neighborhood.

Fabricated by ALT BLD, Rock | Roll includes an architectural-scale, free-floating dome that recalls a giant disco ball in both form and function. Suspended far overhead and animated by light and sound, the shiny, faceted structure will serve as a programmatic marker to an outdoor gathering space dedicated to sharing and enjoying community-driven storytelling. For the duration of the Rock | Roll installation, the space will host Carnival-inspired playlists as well as a talks series developed in collaboration with University of Miami’s Center for Global Black Studies and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Program to be announced.

Barnes notes: “I saw this project as an opportunity to celebrate the unique character of the city that has become my adopted home and the subject of much of my most prominent research. Rock | Roll is an ode to the joyful spirit that persists in Miami’s Black communities—a spirit of self-care that is so perfectly embodied in Miami Carnival culture. This city would not be what it is today without significant contributions from people who, on the one hand, look like me, and on the other reflect deep ties to places beyond Miami, especially the Caribbean and Latin America. The moral to the story is that there is space for everyone here.”

“We are proud to welcome Germane Barnes’ Rock|Roll to the neighborhood and spotlight this tremendous Miami talent making international waves,” says Craig Robins, President and CEO of Dacra. Each year, our Annual Neighborhood Commission invites creative visionaries to harness the power of art, design, and culture to provide original, engaging experiences for all our guests. The imaginative, local focus of this year’s site-specific installation is going to be a lot of fun.”

According to curators Anava Projects, “One of the things we admire most about Germane and his practice—and there are many—is his community-engaged approach, which exemplifies the most exciting directions in the field at this moment. His work is at once accessible and poetic, critical and uplifting. We’re thrilled to be collaborating with him.

The first Miami-based talent to be selected for the Miami Design District Neighborhood Commission since its launch in 2015, Barnes is a Chicago-born, University of Illinois- and Woodbury University-trained architect regarded for his propositional practice dedicated to mining the ways that race and architecture entwine, implicitly and explicitly, historically and today. Barnes’ recent prestigious honors include the Rome Prize in Architecture, the Harvard Wheelwright Prize, the Architectural League Prize, and an inaugural grant from Theaster Gates and Prada’s Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab. In addition to running his independent eponymous studio, Barnes is an Assistant Professor and the Director of The Community Housing & Identity Lab (CHIL) at the University of Miami School of Architecture

The Miami Design District is committed to enriching the neighborhood through cultural interventions that in turn support talented artists and creatives. Now in its eighth year, the Miami Design District’s Annual Design Commission is a family-friendly event intended to draw the community together. Past winners include: Studio Proba and Enjoy the Weather’s TomorrowLand (2021); gt2P’s Conscious Actions (2020); Fernando Laposse’s Pink Beasts (2019); Dozie Kanu’s Support System (2018); Charlap Hyman & Herrero’s White Rain (2017); Philippe Malouin’s The Speed of Light (2016); and Snarkitecture’s Holiday (2015).
