Shintaro Sakamoto – Obscure Nightclub

JAPANESE SONGWRITING LEGEND SHINTARO SAKAMOTO SHARES VIDEO FOR OBSCURE NIGHTCLUB, THE FEELING OF LOVE EP OUT JULY 17, 2021 VIA ZELONE RECORDS, 12″ VINYL RELEASE TO BE RELEASED AS OFFICIAL RECORD STORE DAY DROP

Praise for Shintaro Sakamoto

Sakamoto’s mission is an expressive palette he has carefully made for himself with a ship-in-a-bottle-like focus. – Pitchfork

[How To Live With A Phantom’s] glimmering alloy of post-hippie global pop, soft-rock, lite-funk, Tropicalia, feels both meticulous and sly, vaguely evoking similar efforts by Beck. – The New York TImes

By deliberately amplifying the foreign strangeness that composers built into easy-listening exotica and that dilettantish listeners imposed on bossa nova and Latin jazz, the Japanese musician Shintaro Sakamoto seems to ask, ‘What if this alien music were made by actual aliens?’ – SPIN Magazine

Japanese psychedelic rock legend Shintaro Sakamoto is proud to share the official video for Obscure Nightclub from the new The Feeling Of Love EP, due July 17, 2021 via his own Zelone Records. Watch the video HERE, listen to the title track HERE, and look out for the EP’s vinyl release as a Record Store Day 2021 Drop this weekend. View the list of participating Record Store Day stores HERE.

The video was directed by Kensuke Ide, also a musician himself. Both this video and the next one (to be released soon) were shot on Super 8mm film by the director. Obscure Nightclub is a song depicting an image of Sakamoto gazing at the lost visions of the nightlife. The textures of Ideߣs 8mm film perfectly illustrate the character of the songs made during the pandemic.

The four-track EP features the laid-back style for which Sakamoto’s solo material has become known, but as always, the songs bear the marks of restless experimentation. The title track features characteristic elements like steel guitar and heavily-effected vocals, while Obscure Nightclub is a ballad enveloped in a catchy flute melody. By Swallow Season opens the B-side with its mid-tempo jazzy boogie, accompanied by wah-wah guitar and saxophone. The EP ends with Don’t Tinker With History, a funky number complete with a James Brown-worthy guitar riff.

Shintaro Sakamoto is a Japanese music composer, producer, writer and singer based in Tokyo. He began his career in 1989 as a member of the psych/rock band Yura Yura Teikoku, where he played guitar and sang.

Yura Yura Teikoku released 10 albums over the course of 21 years, disbanding in 2010. The following year, Sakamoto launched a solo career and started his own record label, Zelone Records. He released his debut solo album How To Live With A Phantom, where Other Music Recording & Co. licensed the album for the US/EU/UK release in 2012. In 2014, Sakamoto released a split 7-inch single with Mayer Hawthorne for Record Store Day, and then released his 2nd solo album Let’s Dance Raw.

Once again, Other Music Recording & Co. licensed the album for the US/EU/UK release (and it reached #2 on Billboard’s World Chart in October, 2014). Sakamoto’s 3rd solo album Love If Possible was released in Japan, and digitally worldwide in 2017, and a split 7-inch single with Devendra Banhart was also released in Germany. Shintaro Sakamoto gave his first solo live performance at the WEEK-END Festival in Cologne Germany. In 2018, Sakamoto went to tour in China, Netherlands (Le Guess Who?), London, and Mexico (Tropico Fes.).

In 2019, Sakamoto participated in a song on a new album ATRAS / ALEM by O Terno, a band based in Sao Paulo. In the same year, new single Boat was released with a successful US headline tour (SF, SR, Chicago and NY). In 2021, he participated on a 50th-anniversary musical tribute to beat poet Allen Ginsberg’s The Fall of America: Poems of These States 1965-1971.

Jawny – The Story of Hugo

JAWNY RELEASES NEW EP THE STORY OF HUGO TODAY

Vans Channel 66 Livestream Performance Set For July 15 at 6pm PST

LA-based Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist JAWNY shares his new project The Story of Hugo out today via Interscope Records. Available now at all digital retailers.  The Story of Hugo features the recently released track Take It Back which The Fader called a dude’s rock anthem-in-waiting, is built around a jacked riff and baggy verses reminiscent of ‘90s Beck.

Fans can see JAWNY perform songs from The Story of Hugo on the Vans’ new livestream network,  Channel 66.  Channel 66 takes Vans Off The Wall & On The Air, broadcasting live weekdays from New York City, Chicago, Mexico City, and Los Angeles.  Programming celebrates the unique creative culture of each city featuring DJ sets, curated radio shows, talks, workshops and performances hosted by Vans friends & family across music, art, action sports and street culture. Tune in at Vans’ website on Thursday, July 15 at 6pm PST to watch JAWNY’s performance.

The Story of Hugo follows JAWNY’s 2020 major-label debut For Abby, a 10-track conceptual project detailing his attempt at reviving a troubled romance. This time around, JAWNY presents the gut-punching prelude to For Abby, approaching each track with equal parts vulnerability and warped imagination. Featuring four songs and two interludes, the result is an up-close portrait of young love gone awry: boy meets girl, boy sabotages everything, girl moves on, boy deeply, deeply regrets it.

Tracklist for The Story of Hugo EP by JAWNY:

  1. Hugo Is Born
  2. Best Thing
  3. Take It Back
  4. You Should Watch This One
  5. Tombstone Grey
  6. Can Ya

In addition to the July 15 release of The Story of Hugo EP, JAWNY’s 2019 single Honeypie (which was featured on last year’s For Abby)  continues to reach new streaming heights as we enter the summer months. Two years after its initial release, the song’s streams continue to reach new peaks daily and have increased nearly sevenfold year over year globally. Due in part to a recent sync in Netflix’s hit original drama Ginny and Georgia, Shazams for the track are up 33% over the last month as the song continues to grow (now at 337M global streams).

Born Jacob Sullenger, JAWNY grew up outside Oakland, CA and started playing guitar when he was just six-years-old. At age 13 he began making beats with his brother, eventually landing placements with several rappers in the SoundCloud scene of the late-aughts. By 2017 he’d gained a cult-like following thanks in part to a series of viral videos posted on Twitter and earned further buzz in 2018 with a self-titled debut EP made under the name Johnny Utah. In 2019, he broadened his fanbase with widely praised singles like Honeypie and 4Tounce, then landed a deal with Interscope Records by the year’s end. Dubbed a slacker-funk gem by DIY Mag, Honeypie has now amassed over 335 million streams globally across all streaming platforms, while its video has surpassed 25 million views on YouTube. Arriving in October 2020, JAWNY’s major-label debut For Abby drew praise from leading outlets like NME who praised the set as one of lockdown’s most innovative and colourful bedroom pop projects. JAWNY will join the recently announced Lollapalooza lineup performing at Grant Park in Chicago on July 30.

Purchase JAWNY’s ‘The Story of Hugo’ eEP via retail, Amazon, Apple, Deezer, iTunes, Pandora, Soundcloud, Spotify, Tidal and YouTube Music

This project is built upon a love of music instilled by my family, appreciation of my culture, and the discovery of the songs and artists that first completely stirred my soul.  ‘These are the songs that reside deep in my heart and continue to be a map to which I constantly return to remember who I am, where I come from, and where I am going. These songs were all recorded live, with the intention from the very beginning of performing them in a very special concert setting. From Springsteen to Juan Luis Guerra, the Colombian rocker covers the soundtrack of his life, his way. Ranging from Mexican icon Juan Gabriel’s ‘No Tengo Dinero’ to Carlos Gardel’s ‘Volver’… done in vintage (yet subversive) style…the music is entirely Juanes’ own and everything sounds live. – Leila Cobo, Billboard

Juanes returns to his roots with ‘Origen,’ a covers album in which he pays tribute to the most influential artists in his life and career The album encompasses styles as diverse as tango, merengue, heavy metal, folk, reggae, vallenato, pop and, of course, rock. It includes the singles “El Amor Después Del Amor” in a rock and gospel version, and Springsteen’s classic ‘Dancing In The Dark’ in a slower folk style and in Spanish. – Sigal Ratner,  AP

New Music Recommendations: Everybody knows Juanes… and now we can rediscover Juanes again. His new album is called ‘Origen.’ And it’s a collection of songs of artists that have influenced him. And the discovery is how vast his influences are, from Bob Marley to Carlos Gardel, the legendary tango artist from Argentina, Juan Luis Guerra from the Dominican Republic, the Mexican diva Juan Gabriel and, yes, Bruce Springsteen… with a really interesting sort of remix of The Boss. There’s [also] a great documentary on Amazon Prime on the making of the album, talking about all those influences – Felix Contreras, NPR Music

Q×A with Grandmother Edna

By: Emily Bunn

Showcasing over a dozen quilts and pillow covers, Grandmother Edna weaves stories of her own life and chronicles American history into her fabric fashioning. The complex interweaving of Edna’s own life fluidly connects with the United States’ grappling with enslavement, civil justice, and the quest for freedom. Depicting familial relations, as well as Edna’s encounters with Maya Angelou and Harry Belafonte, Grandmother Edna brings history to life with her quilting and storytelling. 360 Magazine spoke with the artist about the success of “Pillow Talk”, what inspires her to create art, and her upcoming CD release.

When did you begin creating fabric art?

Really, I mentally began in the 1950’s [while] sitting on a stairway watching my grandmother quilting. Then, maybe somewhere around the late 80’s, I decided to pick my poems up from midnight brown paper bags writings to hand sewn quilting.

What first got you interested in American history?

Being Black in the 50’s going with my grandmother to be the help/maid. And, in the 60’s, attending an all white school.

If you were to create fabric art to express our current moment in time, what would that design look like?

I have a new quilt on exhibit titled: “There Was A Time When The Universe Was FREE.”

What inspired you to start selling your quilted creations, pillow covers, and fabric art?

First of all, my quilts will never be for sale. My pillow covers sales will I hope help fund my free educational mobile classroom called “A Grandmother’s Pilgrimage, INC.” and my Grace Wisher Reparation Recovery Youth Scholarship Fund, LLC.

What inspired the name “pillow talk” for your exhibition?

I travel through the country as an invisible soul, no one seems to listen to anything I had to say. I decided to create a nightcap to relax the busy minds of everyone–and just maybe they would have time to hear me.

What has the reaction to “pillow talk” been like?

Amazing, fresh. It’s a newness in the art world.

What has working with the The Franklin County Visitors Bureau and The African American Historical Association of Western Maryland been like?

Exciting, cool and [represents] that change is coming, History being over-hauled. Janet and Ron have been great to partner with. I hope this [exhibit] will … improve that culture sock everyone keep avoiding in this America.

Your fabric art often reflects stories from your own life. What milestones from your life have you felt were most important to include in your artwork?

It’s that front door entry thing for me. The lost traditions of my people.

Are you currently working on any exciting fabric art projects that you can reveal to 360 Magazine’s readers?

Yes, I have my new CD on release. I have a file cabinet packed with poems to be quilted. I have faith the money will come. It’s appears to be easy, but it’s very hard to get paid for a job very well done. This is all fun and relaxing for me. I tell everyone to Just sew your emotions. Thanks 360 Magazine for this new media.

An incredible writer, lyricist, rapper and vocalist, bursting with effusive energy and a massive personality, the Cleveland native, born Nnena Adigwe to Nigerian parents, credits some of her robust, descriptive storytelling impulses to her past screenwriting experience. A former basketball player, Nnena began writing comedic sketches during college. That soon led to working on more full-fledged projects—the kinds of works that needed sound tracking. Rather than pay licensing fees, she tried her hand at making her own music.

For her debut EP, Nnena scripted and produced comedic and brilliant bite-sized sketches and live videos to post as companion pieces for the EP track to set the vibe for each song- Check those out on her Instagram.

She explains making music for her is about telling stories that simultaneously define us and connect us to others. I want my music to elicit the truth and make the listener feel comfortable. I want people not to feel alone and I never want my music to leave anyone out.

In the music and visuals that she creates, she shares stories, scenarios, debacles and personal experiences with a warmth, humor, and finesse that almost make you forget how hard life can be. I’ll make the worst situations funny.

Nnena also finds inspiration for her music from the female experience, My music is what other females wish they could say out loud, but I do it for them in a song.

Nnena has received early coverage from Variety, Teen Vogue, Flood, and support from BBC 1’s Annie Mac, Apple Music’s Ebro, and has been a sought-after songwriter for artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Normani. She has also performed as the opening act for rising star Boogie, Mayorkun, and Trinidad James.

Her music reflects her eclectic influences ranging from Otis Redding to Millie Jackson, from Queen Latifah to Miriam Makeba to Kendrick Lamar and especially, Lauryn Hill, she molded me the most, along with other neo-soul genre artists Musiq Soulchild and Jill Scott, as well from Drake, J. Along with officially surpassing 100K subscribers on YouTube, Kidd G recently enlisted Lil Uzi Vert for a fun remix of Teenage Dream. The track was an instant hit, gaining recognition from HYPEBEAST, XXL, among others. Kidd G also linked with longtime country music heavyweight Colt Ford to assist with a remix to his viral hit song Down The Road. Both achievements arrive on the heels of Kidd G’s full-length project, Teenage Dream: 1000 Miles from Georgia, the deluxe version of his debut EP, Teenage Dream, a six-track project which features a collision of potent beats and gritty yet melodic guitar work working together on the 18-year-old’s first solid body of work. Throughout the EP, that sound creates a powerful backdrop to the slice-of-life songwriting many fans first discovered on Dirt Road — the October 2020 release that quickly landed on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and amassed 5 million YouTube views in little over a month on the official music video (16M views to date). The Georgia-bred singer/songwriter recently caught the attention of CMT, who hailed his music as earwarming and undeniable, and THE NEW YORK TIMES, who exclusively profiled him earlier this year online and in print.

Growing up in the small Georgia town of Hamilton (population 1,130), Kidd G first found fame online through TikTok and SoundCloud, where he got his start posting songs he’d recorded with his friend Nolie Beats. In spring 2020 he caught the attention of Rebel Music, who signed him on the strength of his genre-warping talents. While early tracks like his debut single Sorry lean toward traditional hip-hop, he later brought an element of old-school country into his songwriting. As he continued posting his music on SoundCloud, Kidd G soon amassed a dedicated following undeniably drawn to his down-home charm and the honest detail of his lyrics.

As he continued exploring his country roots, Kidd G soon came up with Dirt Road —a nostalgia-soaked ballad that quickly went viral, its video surpassing 5 million YouTube views in little over a month. I love country because it feels so natural to me, and you can really tell stories in the songs, says Kidd G, naming Hank Williams Jr. among the artists he was raised on. Now having surpassed 1.5M monthly Spotify listeners, his tracks have seen radio play from KIXX Country Radio in Australia, and reached new peaks on highly coveted country playlists including Amazon Music’s ‘Country Heat’ (peaked at #2), and Spotify’s ‘Hot Country’ (peaked at #3). Following his new partnership with Big Machine Label Group’s The Valory Music Co., Kidd G is now back in the studio and eager to share all new music that will continue to showcase his unique raw talent.

Stephen Sanchez – Kayla

BUZZING SINGER & SONGWRITER STEPHEN SANCHEZ RELEASES NEW SINGLE KAYLA DEBUT EP PRODUCED BY IAN FITCHUCK [KACEY MUSGRAVES] COMING SOON

 Listen to Kayla HERE

After asserting himself as a modern day troubadour with millions of independent streams and views, buzzing singer and songwriter Stephen Sanchez shares a new single entitled Kayla today via Republic Records. Listen to KaylaHERE.

Stephen wrote the tune 100% solo but recruited Ian Fitchuck [Kacey Musgraves] for production in Nashville. As the story goes, he had just gotten out of a relationship and penned the tune about a female friend, Kayla, who he’d long harbored unspoken feelings for. She loved the song, but had moved away. Now, this story of unrequited love paves the way for his upcoming debut EP executive produced by Fitchuck. On the track, pedal steel wraps around delicately picked acoustic guitar as Stephen’s voice rings out with raw emotion on the hook, Won’t you lie next to me, oh Kayla.

On the track Stephen Said, I wrote Kayla while sitting alone in my bedroom thinking about this girl (Kayla) I had a thing for 2 years ago. I wanted to write her this song because at the time she didn’t see all the wonder I saw in her. I wanted to capture that wonder in hopes that maybe she’d see it for herself someday. With this song I hope people are brought back to a child-like innocence all love has at its core and that the lyrics would ‘hit-home’ enough for someone to look at love with a little more heart.

Next up, he takes the stage at Bonnaroo this fall, which marks the first time he’s not only playing a festival, but also attending one!

18-year-old Stephen Sanchez pens the kind of tunes that resonate in any era. They’d work just as well on social media as they would at Woodstock. He introduced himself with his independent debut single Lady By The Sea, racking up 4 million Spotify streams, 2 million views and 480K likes on TikTok, and received plugs from mega-creators a la Spencer X, Abigail Barlow, and Jenna Raine.

The success landed him a deal with Republic Records, and he’ll be unveiling more new music very soon.
