How Important Are First Impressions in Modern Entertainment?

Artistic design has become one of the most crucially important features in the modern entertainment industry. This is thanks to the rise of online libraries for everything from television to games. People are likely to make snap judgments about the pictures they see on the thumbnails in front of them and, if these designs don’t immediately grab the attention, the entertainment choice stands to lose out to a rival. Online entertainment providers need to be aware of just how important first impressions are, and design their offerings accordingly.

Audience Attention is More Discriminating Than Ever

There has been a vast amount of research into whether people’s attention spans are getting shorter, with some studies suggesting that the average human is nine seconds. However, others have been quick to point out that it is a vague statistic and something that isn’t perfectly measurable anyway.

Perhaps what is more likely is that the modern generation of internet users have much more selective attention than those who existed twenty years ago. What all researchers can agree on, though, is that online businesses and entertainment options only have a limited amount of time to grab someone’s attention before they move on to something else.

Users Know They Have an Abundance of Choice

The fact that there is just so much out there to choose from has led to this need for online businesses to capture audience attention instantly. Users are well aware of the abundance of choice in every industry. One of the biggest factors towards this has been the library model in entertainment, which was made famous by Netflix. This involves users scrolling through long lists of films and television shows, looking for one that catches their eye. The picture used here is so important, as it needs to stand out from all the others on the list.

Netflix has inspired numerous other streaming services, and the concept has also spilt over to gaming as well. Online casinos have been using this model for some time, as it is the best way to display the vast lists of games on offer. This is especially true for slots, where abundant choice is the best way to pull in players. At Vegasslotsonline there are hundreds of games to choose from, and developers probably have less than a second to capture players’ attention. This is why the thumbnails need to be bright, colourful, and instantly appealing. Some examples of this can be seen with offerings like Starburst, which has large font and multiple colours, and Mega Moolah, which also has bold writing and a scattering of gold coins in the image.

The library model is set to become ubiquitous in other sections of the gaming industry in the years ahead. This is thanks to the rise of cloud-based subscription services on consoles and PC. Options like Google Stadia allow players to pay a monthly fee to have access to a wealth of games, rather than having to buy individual titles. This means that players will spend less time deliberating on what they are going to play, knowing that they are not making a large investment for that game. With this in mind, developers need their titles to stand out, and this will all come down to the design of the thumbnails shown on screen.

How Important is The Design of The Thumbnail?

Because of the seemingly endless options on offer in the entertainment industry, the design of the thumbnail of a film, television series, game, or YouTube video is so important. It needs to serve multiple purposes if possible. This includes an image that is going to catch the eye of users immediately, a brief description in some cases, the name, and something that conveys the genre.

Going back to the slot game example, it seems that developers here have managed to master the art of incorporating these things into a tiny square on a screen. Book of Dead, for instance, shows a picture of a rugged explorer, a striking gold artefact, and a background of ancient tombs. It also has the name of the game in large, visible writing. From this, players can easily gather that it is an adventure offering set in Ancient Egypt.

Film posters need to give viewers the facts they need to sway their decision as to whether they want to watch. This includes names of popular actors or directors or a reference to a famous title from the same filmmaker. When it comes to thumbnails on streaming platforms, however, there is even less room available for these things. Therefore, designers need to be selective in what they show. Superhero offerings on Netflix are a good example of making use of limited space. For example, the Spider-man titles show the hero pitted against the main villain in each film.

There is no doubt that first impressions count when it comes to modern entertainment. Designers of thumbnails have a split second to capture the attention of users, who are well aware that they have a lot of options to choose from. Those who can master these designs will enjoy success in the modern age.

Harry Metcalfe × The Collector

‘The Collector’ Harry Metcalfe at London Concours

  • London Concours reveals details of its perennial feature ‘The Collector’, which shines a light on one individual’s car collection
  • Co-founder of evo magazine and Harry’s Garage, Harry Metcalfe will display some gems from his garage, including his recently restored London Concours-award-winning Lamborghini Espada
  • The display will also feature two icons of ‘80s excess: the Lamborghini Countach and the Ferrari Testarossa
  • Metcalfe will also display among his eclectic car selection, a mix of Paris Dakar winning motorbikes from 1979 – 1998
  • Hosted at the Honorable Artillery Company HQ from 8-10 June, the London Concours is the finest automotive garden party
  • Tickets are available now, from London Concours

The London Concours presented by Montres Breguet, each year, places one individual’s car collection firmly in the limelight, revealing the personal stories and immense passion which created it. This year The Collector celebrates Oxfordshire-based automotive aficionado, co-founder of evo magazine and Harry’s Garage, Harry Metcalfe, and his eclectic car collection.

Setting the tone nicely is Harry’s Ferrari Testarossa ‘Monodado’, a car which featured heavily in the Harry’s Garage YouTube channel as it undertook a legendary journey from Harry’s home in the Cotswolds to the Sahara Desert. The Pininfarina-designed car was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1984 and is the epitome of ‘80s indulgence and excess. Harry’s car is a 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, powered by a naturally aspirated dry-sump 4.9-litre Flat-12 engine – which is capable of propelling the car from 0-60mph in just over five seconds.

Alongside it, another ‘80s poster car, the Lamborghini Countach. Harry’s car is a 5000 Quattrovalvole – meaning 4 valves per cylinder. This is the highest horsepower version of the Countach ever made, producing 449hp. One of the most recognizable cars in recent history, the Countach epitomizes the decade of the 1980s, despite having been in production since 1974, where it remained until 1990. Harry’s particular car was the car that launched the Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole at the London Motor Show in 1987, and he also had legendary Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni sign the interior during one if its many trips to Italy – a very special car indeed.

The display will also include several of Harry’s Jaguars. Most notable among them are two Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) cars. These are limited edition, fettled versions of Jaguar’s finest motor cars designed purely for motoring pleasure, in this instance Harry is bringing along a Jaguar F-TYPE ‘Project 7’ and a Jaguar XE SV ‘Project 8’.

The Jaguar F-TYPE is a limited-edition car, with only 250 ever made. Project 7 was inspired Jaguar’s racing pedigree. Its name derived from the seven times Jaguar has won the famous Le Mans 24-hour race. Three of those historic wins were in the iconic D‑type, and the brief to Jaguar’s designers with the Project 7 was to conceive a modern-day D‑type. Harry was involved in the car from its formative days, providing feedback on the first prototype vehicles. Harry’s car is number 1 of 250, and as such has a few special features including the striking orange detailing on the front grille, calipers, mirrors and the underside of the rear spoiler. Inside the boot, every member of Jaguar’s SVO team has signed the vehicle, making it truly unique.

The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is the most powerful road legal Jaguar in history – producing 592hp from a 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 engine. The car is a limited production run of just 300 cars worldwide, each one hand-assembled at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire, England. The Project 8 still holds the fastest ever lap for a four-door production sedan at the Nürburgring Nordschleife – having beaten many renowned supercars in the process. Harry’s car is the first ever Project 8 and is a bespoke version in a striking deep purple with a distinctive black stripe, it is a four-seater version with a black roof and lightweight forged black alloy wheels.

Harry is also bringing with him a selection of six Paris Dakar winning motorbikes from 1979 – 1998. Harry has had a longstanding love of motorbikes having spent a lot of time during his formative years at his parents’ house in Wales riding motorbikes around the nearby forests and fields. Bikes that visitors can expect to see on the stand include a 1978 Yamaha XT500, a 1984 BMW R80 G/S Paris Dakar, a Honda XL500R Paris Dakar, a 1989 Honda Africa Twin 650 Marathon, a 1989 Yamaha Super Tenere 750 and a 1991 Cagiva Elefant 900ie – which all help to chronicle the legendary off-road rally event which started out in 1978 pitting competitors against each other on the toughest off-road terrain from Paris France to Dakar, Senegal. He is also bringing along two of his favorite road bikes, a 1974 Kawasaki KH750 (the biggest two-stroke production superbike), which has a fearsome reputation and was banned in the US in 1976 for breaching emissions regulations, and a 1979 Honda CBX which is well-known for being the first ever six-cylinder production bike.

Rounding out a collection of eight cars and eight bikes, Harry is also bringing his 1978 Jaguar XJC V12 manual, which is currently undergoing a thorough restoration in the hands of Painting Classic Cars in Eastbourne, his recently restored 1971 Lamborghini Espada Series 2, which took home class honors at last year’s show, as well as his two Lotus models, a beautiful 1973 Lotus Elan Sprint and a classic 1987 Lotus Esprit Turbo HC.

Andrew Evans, London Concours Director, said: “We always want our ‘The Collector’ feature to showcase a really personal selection of vehicles. And this year we are very pleased to welcome automotive afficionado Harry Metcalfe to join us at London Concours. What’s clear is that each of Harry’s cars and bikes is chosen for a reason; every single one has a story behind it, creating not just a spectacular visual display but a fantastic talking point, too. Harry’s collection has been collected and curated over many years and perfected over many more – and we look forward to welcoming him onto the manicured lawns of the HAC’s Artillery Gardens once more.”

Previously held over two days, the London Concours 2021 shifts to a three-day event to capitalize on visitor demand for more luxury brand content – from jewelry to bespoke suits – and modern supercars. The three days will be a VIP Preview Day, Style Edition and Supercar Day. At the heart of each day will remain the collection of nearly 100 rare and iconic luxury cars of all ages that has quickly cemented London Concours as one of the UK’s top motoring events.

The London Concours takes place from 8-10 June 2021. Tickets are available from London Concours.

Mental Health Awareness illustration by Heather Skovlund for 360 Magazine

Mental Health Awareness

Many people, including children and adults across diversity backgrounds, can struggle with social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral health. These challenges can be situational, present for a season of life, or be a struggle across a lifetime. The symptoms may also turn on and turn off, be persistent every day, or resolve just to pop back up again.

Even though having complications with mental or behavioral health is common, it does not necessarily mean a person is functioning at their best or the symptoms should be left unaddressed. Early intervention can be more effective, than the choice to put off addressing a mental health concern for another time.

Awareness of mental health signs and symptoms are important. The first step is recognizing when we need support. Let’s set aside labels such as depression, anxiety, addictive behaviors, and disorders for a moment. Instead, let’s consider observations. Below is a clustered list of commonly experienced struggles we can lookout for to monitor our mental health:

Socially

  • Noticing a pattern of withdrawing or avoiding friends, family, or activities
  • Having interpersonal conflicts with friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, or even strangers
  • Having a difficult time understanding and/or relating to others or common life scenarios
  • Feeling disconnected from others or struggling to get close to others
  • Feeling lost about knowing who you are

Emotionally

  • Experiencing sadness, despair, distress, prolonged sorrow
  • You or others noticing changes in your mood from high to low
  • Enduring excessive worry, fears, or discomfort with the unknown
  • Experiencing extreme guilt, self-blame, or negative self-talk
  • Having bouts with excessive or persistent anger

Cognitive/Thinking

  • Noticing thought patterns that are confused, conflicted, indecisive, repetitive, or forgetful
  • Having a lowered ability begin or maintain focus
  • You or others noticing a disconnect between your thoughts and the world around you
  • Feeling fearful such as paranoia
  • Having repeat unpleasant or worrisome thoughts or images
  • Hearing, seeing, or feeling something that is not truly there
  • Thoughts of hurting or killing yourself or someone else

Behavioral

  • Having a reduced ability to cope or resolve daily living complications or stress
  • Struggling with adjustment to life changes
  • Experiencing problems related to alcohol, tobacco, and/or legal or illegal substances
  • Noticing changes in eating habits such as too much, too little, overly focused on eating
  • Observing patterns of overexercise
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Having episodes of violence towards others, yourself, animals, or objects
  • Challenges with impulsive decisions or risk taking

Physical

  • Seeing trends in energy level such as significant tiredness or grand amount of energy
  • Struggles falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up, or low quality of sleep
  • Having physical symptoms such as stomach pain, back pain, headaches, heart pounding, shortness of breath, or other unexplained physical symptoms
  • Experiencing medical providers do not take your symptoms seriously enough

Experiencing one or a few of these symptoms at one time may be a part of life based on the amount of lemons life just handed you. However, there may be a mental health concern worth seeking proper care for if you experience one or more of these symptoms for a short or an extended period of time. Due note, some symptoms are more serious than others, such as harm to yourself or someone else, that should not be ignored and need care immediately.

Another element we can use to monitor our mental health is awareness of how our mental health symptoms interact with our daily lives. Sometimes mental health struggles can become disruptive to daily life such as negatively impacting relationships with others, how you think or feel internally about yourself, employment, housing, finances, and/or legal issues. Other symptoms are manageable and do not cause a large disruption; however, beware some symptoms can fly under the radar, but that does not necessarily indicate all is well.

If you are unsure if you are experiencing mental health concerns and would like a better understanding, then consider completing a screener. Mental Health America provides a free, quick, screening tool that provides mental health you can use to make decisions about next steps for care. The results can also be used to start the initial discussion with a mental health provider.

There is hope! In most circumstances, symptoms can be managed, reduced in intensity, and relief increased when working with a mental health provider. There are various forms of care, and you can find the right fit for you such as talk based therapy in-person or online, activity-based therapy, and collaboration with medical providers for mediation as needed.

If you are ready to take the next step, then there are multiple resources available to help you find the right provider. In emergency situations such as thoughts of harming yourself or someone else as well as severe mental illness, then calling 9-1-1, going to a local emergency room, or contacting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) or using live chat on Suicide Prevention Lifeline  may be the best routes.

In non-emergency situations there are options such as contacting a primary care provider for a referral, reaching out to loved ones, connecting to your religious or spiritual community, or finding a professional provider. Below is a list of resources for locating a provider in your area:

Mental health is just like it sounds….health. It can be scary or there can be a stigma to seek out care. However, removing the stigma, overcoming fear, seeking care, and taking steps to improving life takes courage. But you are worth it, and you deserve a better tomorrow.

Cliff Walkers

WATCH CLIFF WALKERS TRAILER ONE AND TRAILER TWO

Here at 360 Magazine, we had the opportunity to screen Cliff Walkers. The film was without a doubt wonderfully written. From the very beginning of the movie, you could see that it would be an action-packed film. The storyline will keep viewers in suspense on what happens next along with questions that do not get answered until the very ending. The acting was impeccable! Each actor played their character perfectly – from the villains to the spies leading towards two very well written plot twists. This film will appeal to anyone wanting to watch an action filled and, at times, emotional movie.

Based on the script by Quan Yongxian, CLIFF WALKERS, is director Zhang Yimou’s first foray into the spy genre. Set the puppet state of Manchukuo in the 1930s, the film follows four Communist party special agents who return to China after receiving training in the Soviet Union. Together, they embark on a secret mission code-named “Utrennya.” After being sold out by a traitor, the team find themselves surrounded by threats on all sides from the moment they parachute into the mission. Will the agents break the impasse and complete their mission? On the snowy grounds of Manchukuo, the team will be tested to their limit.

  • CLIFF WALKERS is Zhang Yimou’s first spy thriller in his over 40-year career.
  • Zhang Yimou is a master of using cinematography and color to support the themes, emotions and plots of his films, and audiences can easily identify key colors in each of his films. CLIFF WALKERS presents a visual feast of beautiful snow-white scenes, presented in different ways to support the twists and turns of the storyline. For example, snowy moments include an avalanche during a gunfight, falling snow as danger approached, snow on the ground and covering the entire street during a car chase, snow shaking down from the tree during an explosion, etc.
  • CLIFF WALKERS showcases Zhang Yimou’s trademark artistic cinematography and vivid color as well as a stellar cast of actors who are well known and highly acclaimed in China.
  • The film was shot on location in Harbin, in -40 degrees Celsius snowy weather. Historical locations in Harbin were 100% rebuilt just for the film, such as the city’s central street, Asia Cinema and Martyr Hotel which were completely recreated in 1930s style.
  • Lead actor Zhang Yi grew up in Harbin and in fact lived on a street that was one of the rebuilt filming locations. During filming, he was able to find his parents’ old house there and video chatted them to show them how accurately recreated it was!
  • The film has already had very positive pre-screening responses in China, including strong ticket presales leading into their Labor Day weekend (this weekend – a major holiday when many tentpole titles are released)

The track, titled “Headrush,” will play in sync with a lightshow produced by Playmodes Studio, the group behind the concept and audiovisual contents of Museum Fiasco’s current Cluster exhibitions, “Kernel,” “Railwave” and “Stellar.” The “Headrush” experience will play from 10 p.m. – midnight from Friday, May 14 through Sunday, May 30. “The debut of this incredible track from Meduza will serve as the first time a single has been released in a contemporary art museum as part of its launch,” said Ryan Doherty, museum curator.

Grammy 2020 nominees for “Best Dance Music Recording,” for their 2019 release ‘Piece of your Heart’, Meduza has spent the last two years leading the charge in returning house music to daytime radio. The track entered the “Global Top 50” playlist on Spotify and has remained there for 15 weeks straight.

“We’re thrilled to have Meduza and Playmodes collaborate to make music and art accessible and interchangeable at Museum Fiasco,” said Doherty. “The music interacting with the sound and light features creates an unforgettable experience, and we can’t wait to welcome the public to this unprecedented show.”

“As techno music lovers, we feel inspired by the rhythms and sounds of Meduza’s new song, “Headrush,” said Eloi Maduell and Santi Villanova, founders of Playmodes Studio. “It is visual and emotive music which will shine at its best with the perfect companion of light, and we’re passionate to premiere this new experience for the Museum Fiasco and AREA15 audience.”

Museum Fiasco is located on the mezzanine of AREA15, the new immersive art, event and entertainment district. Baseball’s All-Star Game

Majority of Fans Support Removal of Baseball’s All-Star Game from Atlanta, Possible Removal of Super Bowl from Arizona Over Voting Laws

Support for Boycott of Beijing Olympic Games Over Human Rights Issues; Support for Athletes, Leagues, Unions Championing Social Change

By a 55-31 percent margin, a new Seton Hall Sports Poll has found that sports fans across the country support Major League Baseball’s decision to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta in the wake of Georgia’s new voting laws. Those who call themselves “avid fans” are even more supportive, agreeing with MLB by a 67-25 percent margin.

The general population was also in support of the move from MLB by a 49-31 percent margin, with 20 percent indicating “don’t know/no opinion.” The “don’t know/no opinion” choice was recited by 14 percent of sports fans and only eight percent of avid fans.

These were the findings of a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted April 23-26 geographically spread across the United States using a national representative sample weighted according to gender, age, ethnicity, education, income and geography based on U.S. Census Bureau figures. The Poll had 1,563 adult respondents with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percent.

Super Bowl Removed from Arizona?

Almost exactly the same level of support was shown for the possibility of moving the 2023 Super Bowl out of Arizona should that state follow Georgia with similar voting law changes. By 55-32 percent (13 percent don’t know/no opinion), sports fans would support moving the game, with avid fans in support of a move by 64-27 percent (9 percent don’t know/no opinion). Among the general public, there is also support for moving the game by 49-30 percent with 21 percent in the “don’t know/no opinion” category.

“When I had the profound pleasure of meeting with Nelson Mandela in 1993 as the Executive Director of the National Basketball Players Association, he encouraged us to use our positions in sport to become agents of change,” said Seton Hall Professor Charles Grantham, director of the Center for Sport Management within the Stillman School of Business. “It is perhaps a long time in coming, but there would seem to be more support than ever for that proposition amongst the leagues, the players and the fans as well as the general public. But so far, the moves are largely symbolic and will require the leagues to utilize their strong political lobby to effectuate legislative and policy change.”

An Olympic Boycott for Beijing Games?

Moving on to the global stage, respondents to the poll were also asked about a possible boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in China, a country often cited for human rights violations. Asked if they would support a boycott of the games, 55 percent of the U.S. general population said yes, with only 23 percent saying no, and 22 percent saying they did not know or held no opinion. Among sports fans, support for a boycott rose to 57 percent vs. 27 percent opposed to a boycott, and among avid fans, 65 percent said yes to a boycott vs. 23 percent saying no. The don’t know/no opinion responses were 16 percent and 12 percent respectively for these self-described fans.

With Allies?

When Americans were asked if they would support an Olympic boycott if multiple countries joined in, the “yes” numbers (in favor) rose to 60 percent for the general population, 62 percent for sports fans and stayed even at 65 percent for avid fans.

Should Athletes Be Able to Participate Independently if Their Countries Boycott the Olympics?

On the question of whether athletes should be able to compete without representing their countries (if their countries were boycotting), the general population said yes by more than a 2 to 1 margin (49-23 percent), with 28 percent registering don’t know/no opinion. Among sports fans, the yes margin was even greater at 54-23 percent (with 23 percent don’t know/no opinion). Support for athletes competing individually rose again among avid fans to 63-23 percent with 14 percent saying don’t know/no opinion.

Should Leagues and Teams Use Their Influence To Affect Social Change?

Asked whether organizations (sports leagues and teams) should use their influence to affect social change, the general public supported such actions by a 48-36 percent margin with 16 percent answering don’t know/no opinion. The level of support for teams and leagues wielding their influence to affect social change rose to 52 percent for sports fans and 61 percent for avid fans.

Should Governments Use Sporting Events To Influence or Affect Social Change?

Asked whether governments should use sporting events to affect social change, the general public supported such actions by a 43-38 percent margin with 19 percent answering don’t know/no opinion. The level of support for governments wielding their influence to affect social change through sport rose to 48 percent for sports fans and 61 percent for avid fans.

Players and Players Associations?

Asked if athletes and/or players associations should use their influence to affect social change – 51 percent of the general population said yes, compared to only 35 percent no and 14 percent who said they did not know or had no opinion. Support for the players’ advocacy rose among sports fans to 55 percent with 34 percent opposing. Among those who describe themselves as “avid fans,” those in favor rose again to 65 percent with opposition declining to 28 percent (11 and seven percent, respectively, saying don’t know/no opinion).

“The question of moving major events in response to legislation or boycotting the Olympics gets to the heart of sports and society, and one influencing the other,” said Grantham. “If the leagues, teams and players continue to wield their economic and political power as agents of change, the potential for real and meaningful impact can be realized.”
