AUTOMOTIVE GROUP FIGHTS AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Two Automotive Executives Become Co-Chairs of the 2021 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® Event in Broward

For the Craig Zinn Automotive Group, joining the fight against breast cancer hits close to home. That’s why two top executives from that organization have stepped up to co-chair this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Broward presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino – Hollywood, scheduled for October 23, 2021. Fleet manager for Lexus of Pembroke Pines, Michele Alter, is a 21-year breast cancer survivor, and Brittany Zinn, assistant group general manager/CZAG, lost a maternal figure to breast cancer. The two plan to work closely with Trudy Spence, senior development manager at the American Cancer Society® Fort Lauderdale to make this year’s event a success.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® (MSABC) is a national movement. Fundraising events range from large-scale traditional walks to unique local experiences and celebrations. Making Strides has united communities, companies and individuals across the country in the fight to end breast cancer for more than two decades. The organization has known of Michele and her fight since 2002, when she first started participating in their events. Both Michele Alter and Brittany Zinn believe in MSABC’s commitment to create a future that’s free from breast cancer. “As we look to the road ahead, we are more determined and more inspired than ever before. It will unite Broward County communities to honor cancer survivors and caregivers touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer,” said Trudy Spence. In years past, this event has raised over 700,000 dollars, which went towards funding breast cancer research and programs geared towards both men and women. At this time, the event will move forward in person, but it will keep federal, state, and local health guidelines in mind. As the fall season approaches, event-based decisions may be made to best meet the health and safety needs of everyone involved. Michele and Brittany hope to get as many people signed up to help raise funds. “Between now through October, people can fuel the fight against breast cancer by fundraising. It’s as easy as downloading the American Cancer Society FUNdraising App, which will allow you to register for the October event and ask for donations via email, text and social media,” said Michele Alter who was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 32.

For many, being diagnosed is a life changing experience, and Michele believes that cancer lit a fire in her soul. Early during her treatment, she decided that she would not only beat cancer, but she would also volunteer and help The American Cancer Society fund a cure. “They were there for me when I needed them the most, so I feel blessed that I am here today ready and able to co-chair this year’s Making Strides/ Broward event.” Michele believes in the programs, because they were the only thing that helped her see the light during those moments of darkness. Brittany comes from an automotive family that happens to also be highly philanthropic. Her father, Craig Zinn, encourages everyone in his company to give back to the community. Despite wearing many hats, Brittany was eager to serve as co-chair for this year’s event to honor the memory of Ingrid, who was like a mother to her. “I’ve seen what breast cancer does to a person. Since I was young, Ingrid kept the true depth of her struggles from me. Had I known, I would have been there for her, much like The American Cancer Society was for Michele,” said Brittany.

According to the American Cancer Society journal, a Cancer Journal for Clinicians, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2021 and 608,570 cancer deaths in the United States. Given the pandemic, it’s believed that people with active cancer may be more susceptible to COVID-19, because of their impaired immune system. For that, the Broward chapter wants to ensure everyone that even if they cannot attend in person, the success of this event will depend on enthusiastic individuals who commit to raising funds, in addition to generous donors who will support those participants.

DELTA VARIANT PUTS NORMAL BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON AT RISK

By: Clara Guthrie

There was a period in the late spring and early summer of this past year in which it seemed America’s COVID-19 struggles were nearing some long-awaited conclusion: the last few moments of breathlessness before a collective sigh of relief. At that time, students and their parents looked forward to a seemingly normal back-to-school season. Yet, the recent rise in the Delta variant has introduced a new wave of doubt.

On August 8 alone, The New York Times reported 36,068 new Covid-19 cases and a seven-day average of 110,360 total cases in the United States. Covid-related deaths are also on the rise, with a seven-day average of 516 deaths. This figure has risen from a weekly average of 188 deaths only one month prior, on July 6. Experts attribute these rising numbers to the highly contagious Delta variant overlaid with low vaccination rates in certain areas across the country. When asked about these trends in mid-July, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said, “This is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated. We are seeing outbreaks of cases in parts of the country that have low vaccination coverage because unvaccinated people are at risk.”

Unfortunately, as the Delta variant continues to run rampant throughout unvaccinated communities, people who are fully vaccinated are also being infected. Although, it is far rarer. These “break-through” cases speak mainly to the wild infectiousness of the Delta variant, coupled with the facts that no vaccine is 100% effective and that our knowledge of how long immunity lasts after vaccination is still quite murky. According to CNBC, however, “break-through” cases still represent fewer than 0.08% of those who have been fully vaccinated in the United States since the start of the year.

With that being said, the Delta variant is impacting the hopes of a normal back-to-school season in two distinct ways. The first, perhaps more obvious way, is that parents and teachers are fearing for students’ health. This fear suggests a potential return to online learning and more strict social distancing and mask mandates enforced within schools.

It is important to note that COVID-19 poses a far lesser threat to young children than to adults; the risk of becoming severely ill from the virus increases for those over the age of 50 and only grows with age. According to the CDC, the risk of serious illness or complications from COVID-19 for children is actually lower than that from the flu. However, children under the age of 12 are not yet eligible for any form of vaccination. This restriction is raising concerns about how susceptible younger age groups are to becoming sick, even if that sickness does not lead to any serious complications.

Thus, many parents and school districts are pursuing a range COVID-19 precautions to ensure the safety of students. Time Magazine shared a story last week of a school board in Des Moines, Iowa that has already decided to offer a virtual learning option for elementary school students. The ability to transition to in-person learning is available whenever the family feels comfortable enough to do so. This move was, in part, forced by the recent ruling of eight states, including Iowa, to ban schools from being able to require masks – despite the CDC’s recommendation that all students should wear masks inside schools, regardless of whether or not they are vaccinated. “Had we been able to follow the CDC recommendations that everyone in school is masked, regardless of their vaccine status—if we were able to mandate that, then I think we’d be having a different conversation here,” Phil Roeder, a spokesperson for Des Moines’ Polk County public schools, said.

Other counties are having similar struggles, even without the imposition from state governments to ban mask mandates within schools. For example, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in May that all online learning would be eliminated come fall, a decision that he has not yet reversed. But many parents are now petitioning for online options for their children as safety concerns continue to rise. One parent, Farah Despeignes, who is the president of the Bronx Parent Leaders Advocacy Group and has two middle-school-aged sons, said, “When you think about the conditions of the schools with old buildings, with not enough ventilation, that are co-located, that are overcrowded—for us, in the Bronx, in underserved communities, it’s not as simple as, ‘Well, let’s just get back to school.’”

In California, options for students are equally limited. According to The Los Angeles Times, the state has done away with “hybrid learning, ”a combination of in-person and online learning. As a result of such, Los Angeles County parents had until August 6 to choose between either solely in-person or online learning for their children. The latter option is expected to take the form of an independent study, rather than the supportive online learning of last school year. On August 6th, L.A. Unified School District reported that only 10,280 of their almost 665,000 students opted for the online option.

The second prominent way in which the Delta variant is affecting back-to-school season is through the shopping behavior of students and their families. Back when the hopes of a normal school year were still high, The National Retail Federation predicted that consumers with children K-12 would spend a record-breaking 37.1 billion dollars this year. Furthermore, it was predicted that back-to-college spending would reach 71 billion dollars. These predictions were due to the excitement associated with a long-awaited return to the classroom after over a year away, when items like lunchboxes and backpacks seemed superfluous.

However, according to a recent poll by First Insight, many consumers are feeling anxious about returning to stores, trying on clothing in dressing rooms and making big purchases due to the risk of the Delta variant. In fact, 56% of respondents said they are actively cutting back their spending at retailers. The CEO of Bath Bed & Beyond, Mark Tritton, told CNBC that their stores have observed people delaying their back-to-school investments, and that peak spending may extend further into September than usual.

As many students return to their classrooms and the Food and Drug Administration continues to work on improving vaccines for individuals under the age of 12, it will become more and more clear how great of a mark Covid-19 has left on the American schooling system and the children within it.

EBHONI — “ROTATION”

“Reclaiming the Toronto R&B crown for women.” — Pitchfork

Toronto R&B star Ebhoni returns today with an edgy, enthralling video for her dreamy single “Rotation.” The cut comes from her July project Good Dick & Weed, and finds Ebhoni over a woozy instrumental, singing an ode to taking control of your love life and keeping your options open. The video echoes that carefree spirit, featuring the artist riding a bike and flexing amidst a crowd of friends and dancers on a summer afternoon. Watch the video for “Rotation” HERE.

In the visual, Ebhoni flaunts a new look that showcases her badass side. With long, colorful nails and blown-out vintage film fuzz, Ebhoni looks like an icon from pop’s past transported to the modern day. Armed with a fun-loving crew, a few low-riding bicycles, a neon pink chore jacket and matching eyeshadow, Ebhoni radiates a cool that feels entirely her own.

The new video arrives amid a hot streak for the singer/songwriter. In May, Ebhoni released the unfiltered, melancholic “Rep It,” the single that kicked off the Good Dick & Weed era. That stunning drop wasn’t even her first of 2021, however. Good Dick & Weed followed February’s “X” EP, which garnered considerable critical acclaim. In addition to Pitchfork plugging the release, HotNewHipHop wrote, “Ebhoni has been one artist to keep an eye out for in the 6ix,” and The Root wrote that her music “makes you feel like you’ve been sipping on a fancy cocktail for the last few hours.” It’s no wonder FLAUNT crowned her “Our favorite new R&B artist.”

Over the last few years, Ebhoni’s string of animated R&B singles has won both commercial and critical success. In the middle of a productive 2019, Pitchfork wrote that she is “reclaiming the Toronto R&B crown for women.” Throughout her career, Ebhoni has made a point to partner with Black-owned businesses, support other women artists and workers, and to uplift the local LGBTQ+ community, which she’s done through efforts like hosting Pride Toronto. Visuals like “Rotation” only bolster the rep she’s built as one of R&B’s most magnetic young stars.

THIRD MAN RECORDS ANNOUNCE LONDON STORE

OPENING ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 IN THE HEART OF SOHO, LONDON

ANNOUNCE EXCLUSIVE THIRD MAN RELEASES FROM UK ARTISTS LIKE PAUL WELLER, DAVID RUFFIN, THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN, CORNERSHOP, GINA BIRCH OF THE RAINCOATS, AND THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT IN CELEBRATION OF THE STORE OPENING

Jack White and Third Man Records have announced the opening of their Third Man Records London Store, their first location outside the USA. Situated on Marshall Street in the heart of London’s historic Soho—an area renowned for its rich musical history—the London store will complete a trio of Third Man physical spaces that includes buildings in Nashville, TN and Detroit, MI. The new location will feature a two-level retail space, an intimate live music venue named “The Blue Basement,” and a European headquarters for the label.

Located at 1 Marshall Street, London W1F 9BA, the store will officially open to the public on Saturday, September 25. It has been personally designed by Third Man founder Jack White, who recently launched Jack White Art & Design via a comprehensive multimedia website cataloguing two decades of his award-winning creative work, alongside the Third Man creative hive of artists. The store was conceptualized and created throughout 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of creating a physical space to help keep record sales and live performances alive after such a tough period for everyone.

Furthermore, in celebration of the opening, Third Man Records approached some of their favorite ever UK artists—Paul Weller, David Ruffin, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Cornershop, Gina Birch of The Raincoats and the great, lost Manchester group The Magic Roundabout—to record something brand new or contribute something previously unheard to the Third Man catalogue. These exclusive releases will be available to buy on black vinyl on September 25 from the Third Man Webstore (soon to be expanding to the UK/EU), at all three Third Man Records stores, and independent record shops everywhere, and on very limited edition yellow vinyl in the Third Man London store only.

Third Man Records London will be multi-functional, tripling up as a two-level retail space, an intimate live music venue named “The Blue Basement,” and a European headquarters for Third Man Records. It will feature a host of the kind of quirks, details and idiosyncrasies Third Man have become renowned around the world for.

These include a Third Man Records token-operated lucky dip book machine designed by the Toronto-based artist Craig Small. Titled the “Literarium,” it is only the second of its kind in the world and much loved by the likes of Margaret Atwood. The store will also feature a Third Man Records token-operated recording booth where artists and the public can record their own material straight to vinyl.

The official announcement follows much speculation and guesswork from eagle-eyed Third Man fans, who noticed the painting of eight fake, rotating store fronts at the 1 Marshall Street address. These fronts included Swank’s Muscle Tee Emporium, Jack Sharp’s Upholstery Tacks and Harry Lime’s Penicillin, all of which claimed to be under the umbrella of the fantastical Absurd Scam Family of Businesses. Last week, all UK subscribers to Third Man Records’ The Vault subscription service received a physical invitation for September 25 to the grand opening of one of these scam companies.

FIVE AUTO REPAIR TIPS FOR WOMEN

FixMyCar comes to your house/office to fix your car, offering vehicle repair tips

According to research published in the “Journal of Marketing Research,” women are quoted higher prices for auto repairs when they are uninformed about the pricing of such repairs. When they have an idea of what it should cost they are no longer overcharged. The more women know about vehicle repairs the more they can help keep expenses down. They can also help ensure they are getting the best service overall when they follow a few helpful tips regarding repairs.

“Typically, women don’t feel comfortable going to the vehicle repair shop, because they feel they are not going to get fair treatment and may get overcharged,” explains Prashant Salla, founder of FixMyCar. “Being able to talk to mechanics directly about the car and seeing the actual repairs taking place outside their house, women (and men) feel much more confident about their car.”

FixMyCar is a company that is revolutionizing the auto repair industry, and one of their missions is to help customers feel more comfortable about their vehicles. Their business model is mobile, so the mechanic goes to the person’s home or office, making the repairs and doing maintenance extremely transparent and hence more trust. This makes it more convenient and comfortable for people, who need to have repairs and maintenance done to their vehicle.

Here Are 5 Auto Repair Tips:

  • Get it in writing. When you take your vehicle somewhere for a repair or maintenance, get in writing what is being done and the rate that you were quoted. This will help you avoid a situation where you are verbally quoted one price and then when you go to pay it’s much higher.
  • Use your owner’s manual. Getting to know your owner’s manual is a good way to help keep up on what your vehicle needs to stay in top condition. Often times, the answer to common issues are found in the owner’s manual, but people don’t think to look there. If you no longer have yours, you may be able to find a PDF copy online.
  • Keep up on routine maintenance. The routine maintenance on your vehicle is important to keeping it running good. If you fall behind in this area your vehicle will likely have issues that arise. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tune ups, are affordable and can keep your vehicle running great longer.
  • Find a mechanic you trust. It’s important for women to trust their mechanic so they feel they are being well taken care of, rather than being taken advantage of. When you find a mechanic you trust you will know you are getting a fair deal.
  • Keep track of what has been done. It’s always a good idea to keep a log or file with all of the work you have had done to the vehicle. This will help you if things are recommended that you know you recently had done, as well as when you go to sell the vehicle. Don’t try to rely on memory about what has been done, because you will not remember everything. Keep an envelope or file where you can keep all the receipts of work that has been done.

“Women love FixMyCar, because we make the process of getting your car fixed extremely transparent, convenient, quote upfront and we don’t upsell. Our best customers and members are women, and they tell us one of the reasons they use our service repeatedly is because of the excellent customer service,” added Salla.

Mobile repairs are also more affordable than going to a dealership or a repair shop. The mobile service model doesn’t have the high overhead that shops do, so the prices offered tend to be 20-30% lower than dealership and repair shops. Plus, it has been designed to allow mechanics to make a higher salary.

Services being offered by FixMyCar include diagnostic inspections, such as car not starting, check engine light on, strange noises, or not being sure what is wrong with it. Other services include battery and starter replacement, brakes and light engine repairs, routine maintenance, such as oil changes, and used car inspections for those who are purchasing or selling a car.

FixMyCar also launched a membership program where you sign up for a quarterly or yearly membership and they schedule and perform all your vehicle’s oil changes outside your house or office. This new membership comes with an unlimited oil change package, which is the first in the industry and allows customers to not worry about their vehicle’s oil changes. Not only do members get free oil changes scheduled and delivered to their house, but they also receive discounts on all other services provided by FixMyCar.

The company was founded by Salla in 2018, after he received an initial $250,000 in funding capital from an angel investor he met at a bar. Later, he secured another $1.6 million in investor funding, including from the likes of Marc Randolph, Netflix’s founding CEO, Richard Wolpert, HelloTech’s founder & CEO, John Kobs, ApartmentList.com’s Founder & CEO. Salla came to America in 2012 from India, where he was earning $100 per month working as a mechanic while studying Mechanical Engineering. In the Detroit area, he earned his master’s degree in automotive engineering, and has flourished in the industry. In addition to revolutionizing the auto repair industry, he is a great example of an American immigrant success story.

Currently, FixMyCar is serving the areas of Metro Detroit, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. They are also moving into Austin, and eventually plan to have services being offered around the country. To learn more about FixMyCar, click HERE.

NESSA BARRETT — “i hope ur miserable until ur dead”

DEBUT PRETTY POISON EP ARRIVES ON SEPTEMBER 10

DELIVERS INTERNET-BREAKING SURPRISE PERFORMANCE AT LOLLAPALOOZA

Ready to make a major mark after gathering millions of streams and receiving widespread critical acclaim, rising singer-songwriter Nessa Barrett uncovers a new single and music video entitled “i hope ur miserable until ur dead” today. Listen to “i hope ur miserable until ur dead” HERE and watch the music video HERE.

Nessa delivers a Gen-Z grunge bop underlined by caustic guitars and a hypnotically spectral hook. Her voice teems with raw emotion as she lets everyone know exactly how she feels! In the accompanying video directed by the incomparable Hannah Lux Davis [Ariana Grande, Halsey], Nessa emerges from a television set Poltergeist-style in order to haunt a deserving ex with her undeniable presence (and totally stealable nineties prom goth looks).

Regarding the song, she said, “‘i hope ur miserable until ur dead’ is the anger you hold inside when people betray you—when people hurt you so bad and you unapologetically hope they get what they deserve.”

Most importantly, the song heralds the arrival of her debut pretty poison EP out September 10 on Warner Records. Pre-order pretty poison HERE. Illuminating the scope of her signature style, she leans into a lullaby melody on the darkly catchy “grave,” while “i wanna die” feels tailor-made for the closing credits of a classic nineties slasher flick. Her jazzy intonation adds raw emotion to “scare myself” as she admits, “Sometimes I even scare myself.” Over wobbling distortion on the title track “pretty poison,” she urges, “Say my name, say my name like you know it’s holy.”

Check out the full tracklisting below.

Nessa broke the internet last weekend when she joined jxdn for a surprise duet of “la di die” on the Main Stage at Lollapalooza. It immediately trended across social media, generating millions of impressions. Meanwhile, she continues to attract critical acclaim. Of her latest release “counting crimes,” Clash Music wrote, “The single itself showcases Barrett’s vocal power alongside a backdrop of guitar and piano overlaid with glitchy production.” In addition to plugs from the likes of UPSET Magazine and more, The Line of Best Fit hailed her as “On The Rise,” going on to rave, “She is the architect of her own, grunge-indebted netherworld, leaning into the pop-punk revival close enough to brush shoulders with it, and yet retaining an extraordinary sense of self that belies her eighteen years.”

Earlier this year, Nessa linked up with jxdn on “I’m Dead” as part of the Official Soundtrack for the new scripted podcast Prom In Hell, the four part horror-musical-comedy series which debuted as the #1 Apple Music Podcast in April. “I’m Dead” notably marks the second collaboration by Nessa and jxdn following their breakout hit “la di die,” produced by the legendary Travis Barker. The latter has already amassed over 200 million streams, cracked the Top 15 at alternative radio and reached #27 at top 40 radio. The duo made their late-night television debut performance with “la di die” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and also performed on The Ellen Degeneres Show. The song has received widespread acclaim from MTV, Elite Daily, Buzzfeed Radio.com and Nylon declared, “As the last line of ‘la di die’ says: She’s gonna be a superstar.”

Pokémon 25: The Red EP RELEASE

ZHU Remixes All Three Tracks For Pokémon 25: The Blue EP, Out Later This Month

The Dual Releases Honor a Pokémon Tradition As 25th Anniversary Celebration Continues

Three new artists have joined Pokémon’s 25th-anniversary celebration: Vince Staples, Cyn and ZHU. Staples and Cyn contribute exclusive new songs to Pokémon 25: The Red EP, which was released today. Available HERE, the EP also features Mabel’s song “Take It Home,” which was unveiled last month. View Pokémon 25: The Red EP visualizers on YouTube HERE.

Reflecting the longstanding tradition of dual releases for the core Pokémon video game series, with each featuring nuanced differences from the other, and paying homage to the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue video games, Pokémon 25: The Blue EP will follow later this month. It will feature remixes of The Red EP songs by GRAMMY-nominated recording artist ZHU, who is fresh off the release of his third album, DREAMLAND 2021, and a sold-out, six-night stand at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater.

The songs from The Red EP will appear on the upcoming P25 Music compilation album, which will be released this autumn by Capitol Records as part of a massive, yearlong music campaign from The Pokémon Company International in partnership with Universal Music Group. ZHU’s remixes will be included on the digital edition of the album. Vince Staples, Cyn and ZHU take their places alongside fellow P25 artists Katy Perry, Post Malone, J Balvin and Mabel.

On the atmospheric, melodic “Got ‘Em,” Vince Staples faces life’s challenges head-on, drawing inspiration from iconic Pokémon characters Mew and Raichu. Staples recently released his self-titled, fourth album out now via Blacksmith Recordings/Motown Records. Garnering positive reviews from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR Music and NME among others, the LP debuted as the No. 1 Current Rap Album and landed at No. 21 on the Billboard 200 Chart week of release. Staples is also currently working on bringing his dramedy, The Vince Staples Show, to Netflix.

“I’ve always been a fan of Pokémon, so it was particularly special to be asked to take part in this 25th-anniversary celebration,” said Vince Staples. “I’m excited for people to hear ‘Got ‘Em,’ and hope the song resonates with fans, especially those who grew up with Pokémon like I did.”

Cyn—who is signed to Katy Perry’s Unsub Records and recently contributed two songs to the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman—offers up “Wonderful,” a shimmering song that celebrates friendship and the joy of being alive.

Cyn shares, “I am so excited to release one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, ‘Wonderful,’ in celebration of 25 years of Pokémon! This song is special to me because I feel it comments on growing pains while also emphasizing a destination of grace and a beautiful journey to it—eggs hatch when they want to or in other words, when they are ready. When I wrote this song, my newborn baby son was in the room—I can hear the influence of becoming a new mother in the music, it will always ring special for me.”

“The Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue video games introduced the world to Pokémon 25 years ago and we wanted to recognize that important part of the franchise in our 25th-anniversary celebrations within the P25 Music campaign,” said Colin Palmer, vice president of marketing, The Pokémon Company International. “Pokémon fans will appreciate the nod to the first Pokémon video games with these EPs, while music fans will enjoy new songs and remixes from exciting artists on these dual collections.”

The Red EP kicks off with “Take It Home,” an original song from BRIT Award recipient Mabel. PAPER Magazine noted, “to say it’s a bop would be a complete understatement—‘Take It Home’ is packed with bright and buoyant beats.” The official video, People Magazine observed, “finds the star chasing Jigglypuff into a Wonderland-style dreamworld full of colorful ensembles and pop star choreography.”

Fans can keep up with the latest news for P25 Music and more celebrations across the franchise on Pokémon’s 25th-anniversary website. Pokémon 25: The Blue EP can be pre-saved HERE.

Pokémon and music fans are invited to join the conversation online with @Pokemon and #Pokemon25.

DIDIER FASSIN — DEATH OF A TRAVELLER

It is a simple story. A 37-year-old man belonging to the Traveller community is shot dead by a special unit of the French police on the family farm where he was hiding since he failed to return to prison after temporary release. The officers claim self-defense. The relatives, present at the scene, contest that claim. A case is opened, and it concludes with a dismissal that is upheld on appeal. Dismayed by these decisions, the family continues the struggle for truth and justice.

Giving each account of the event the same credit, Didier Fassin conducts a counter-investigation, based on the re-examination of all the available details and on the interviews of its protagonists. A critical reflection on the work of police forces, the functioning of the justice system, and the conditions that make such tragedies possible and seldom punished, Death of a Traveller is also an attempt to restore to these marginalized communities what they are usually denied: respectability.

The Author:

Didier Fassin is the James D. Wolfensohn Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, a Director of studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris and a Professor on the Annual Chair of Public Health at the Collège de France.

Advance Praise:

“In seeking to do justice to yet another young life, another racialized suspect, snuffed out in the name of public order, Fassin provides a stunning indictment of a new moral economy: a culture of institutional duplicity that allows police to get away with murder.”Jean Comaroff, Harvard University

“How can an account of a controversial killing do justice to it sociologically and according to the laws of the land, and at the same time politically and humanely? This is the multifaceted conundrum addressed by this beautifully written and meticulously crafted book. A riveting must-read for all those concerned by the broader meaning of death at the hands of the police, in France and in other countries.”Dame Caroline Humphrey, University of Cambridge
