Indie artist Kailee Spark recently released her song, “Passageways” and is set to release her debut album Savor This come June 2021. The rising starlet’s poignant lyricism and angelic voice are highlighted on her most recent release, earning her nearly 200k followers online and comparisons to Taylor Swift and Jewel. However, Spark’s music is emotive, sensitive, visceral, and completely her own. Here at 360 Magazine, we spoke with Kailee Spark to discuss her background as a musician, inspiration behind “Passageways”, her future musical bucket list, and more.

Who is someone that doesn’t listen to your music that you think should?

So, I’d say my music could be liked by anyone who enjoys poppy radio stations. I think my music is very uplifting for the most part and that younger people would enjoy it.

What’s your ideal press headline 12 months from now?

Something that talks about my unique style and that it’s playing all over the radio.

What’s your background?

I grew up in the Bay Area, raised Mormon, left the church at age 22 and moved to Big Island Hawaii shortly after, where I’ve lived since. Finished my bachelor’s degree in anthropology at UH-Hilo, then decided to get my MA just for the hell of it [and] applied cultural anthropology at Humboldt State University in Northern California.

I’ve been primarily self-employed since living in Hawaii. I used to sell crystals at the farmer’s market and then got into the car rental business with an ex-boyfriend.

I love traveling and have spent a lot of time in India and can speak a little bit of Hindi.

What motivates you to get up everyday to do what you do?

Having fun and constantly learning new things. I like thinking that through my music or entertainment I inspire others.

How has your family inspired you and your music?

My parents are big into classic rock and stuff like Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, etc. So, I grew up listening to a lot of music. I started piano lessons around age 8 and wrote my first real song at age 12 which I performed at school functions. At age 15, a random man from my church brought over a guitar on Christmas morning for me. I had wanted a guitar for a long time and I was stoked, I began teaching myself right away and writing songs.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in San Jose, CA. My sister and I spent a lot of time in the backyard climbing trees, or riding our rollerblades around the neighborhood.

What made you move to Hawaii?

I wanted to learn about permaculture and raw food diets and on a forum somewhere I read about a community on the Big Island. So, I first came here to do an internship at this bizarre community for three months – it was clothing optional kind of hippie commune. I decided on my third day in Hawaii I would be moving here – it just felt right.

How does Hawaii inspire your music?

Yes, it definitely inspires a lot of nature themes. Many of my songs include some element of nature in them. I live in a really peaceful setting, and my house is on an acre of mostly jungle. I wake up in the mornings to the sound of birds singing and I fall asleep to a chorus of frogs and crickets. Sometimes the stars are so magnificent and bright, and the lava, the ocean, and the aloha

Who inspired you to make music?

I can’t think of a specific person, but I just always loved music. At one point I was obsessed with this CD my parents had called “Wacky favorites” which had songs like “The auctioneer boy” and “Tie me kangaroo down sport”. I’d listen to it over and over. I remember sitting on the floor listening to this CD when I decided that I wanted to do music someday, I must have been around 6 or 7.

What or who inspired your song “Passageways”?

When I first started writing the song it wasn’t about anyone specific, just a feeling I had like I knew that someone was out there that I’d feel that way about. A bit later I met someone and I said oh that’s who this song was for, let me finish it.

Talk about your producer on this song?

Bub Pratt is a talented musician and our styles vibe together. I was confident he could produce my song and record with the sound I wanted. The engineer Keli’i is also very talented.

Talk about the lyrics to this song?

This song is about that intense curiosity you get when falling in love with someone. You want to know everything about them, everything that made them who they are today. Who are they? What are the pains they experienced? Wanting to feel them fully and surrender yourself to loving them. The beginning of the song refers to me having traveled around a lot. I’ve traveled and done so many things, but now I want to explore this person and who they are.

Where do you get your ideas for song writing?

I don’t usually ever think okay today I’m going to write a song about…. Sometimes I’m able to get into a flow and words just come to me. I usually start by messing around with the guitar and humming out melodies, until I come up with something I like. Then I feel the vibe of the song and wait for some words to float into my consciousness while I play it over and over. Sometimes I’ll just record guitar on its own and listen to it while I drive or whatever and come up with words and themes that way.

What’s your ultimate message to your fans?

That you are powerful and can create the life you want for yourself. Don’t take life so seriously.

What charities are you aligned with?

I used to actually work at a nonprofit here on the island that assisted the homeless in finding housing. Wow I had some crazy experiences there!

I was pretty interested in an organization that helps build squat compost toilets in rural parts of India (open defecation is a big issue which ends up resulting in babies with malnutrition and being stunted), but I don’t know if that’s a glamorous thing to talk about.

What projects will you be involved with in the future?

Would love to write some more songs and start working on another album at the end of the year or next year.

Who are your biggest influences?

Jewel, Laura Veirs, Bright Eyes, Emily Wells. I love Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst, his songwriting is splendid. He’s a good example of someone who doesn’t really have a great voice, but people love his music because of the emotion and depth to his songs. I love his lyrics “I could’ve been a famous singer if I had someone else’s voice. But failures always sounded better, let’s live it up boys, make some noise!”

How have you developed your career?

As a musician…well, I just only recently started making money off it. I wasn’t really trying to be a musician for a while, and went through some wild depression and didn’t pick up the guitar for long stretches of time. But recently in the past year I started playing a little bit and was surprised to find that people loved it. People kept asking me to play, and then I kept getting asked where they could download my music. This led to me searching for a place to record and that’s when I found Kukuau Studio (May 2020).

What kind of singer would you classify yourself as?

Not quite sure how to classify it. I have a soprano voice, but I sing kind of like Bob Dylan/Conor Oberst but female. I have my first voice lessons tomorrow, so let’s see what my instructor says. I wouldn’t really call myself a singer, more of a musician singer/songwriter. I don’t have a super great voice. But I kind of think my unique voice is an asset to me rather than a hindrance, because I don’t sound like everyone else. I try to really convey emotions through my voice, and I think that’s why people like my voice. Oh, but I do love yodeling. Maybe call me a yodeler.

What skills have you learned that will help you in your singing career?

To relax, it’s okay to not be perfect.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

I’d say that the fun really is in the journey, not the destination…That’s where my idea for the album name came, “Savor This”, it’s like savor the moment. Right now is where all the fun is. The destination is fun too, for a little while. But then I’ll want the next thing…happiness is an inside job.

What advice would you give to a singer starting out?

Keep practicing and writing but don’t be too hard on yourself, it should be fun.

How did you get started with your manager?

It just kind of worked out…he offered to help me by being project manager for my album release. I know I need help with other things too, so I’m like why not just [have a] manager? We get along really well, and he is very good with people.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Jewel, Katy Perry, Bright Eyes, KT Tunstall, Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, Laura Veirs, Dolly Parton, and Eminem.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Writing, I like to write about my travels and what not.

Do you like that you’re being compared to Taylor Swift?

Sure, she is a talented songwriter.

What’s next for you in 2021?

My album release, making some cool music videos, and I’d like to do some traveling if possible, too.

How do you take care of your voice?

I try not to overdo it; I went through a phase where I was singing and playing online like 4-6 hours a day most days, and I think it strained my voice. I try to give it time to rest and don’t push it if my voice is just not feeling good that day. I also stopped eating dairy for the most part.

What’s your health regime?

I eat pretty healthy and go on regular walks and do stretching and weightlifting a couple times a week. I got my yoga teacher training certificate at a training center in India, but I’ve never taught yoga.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Conor Oberst, Laura Veirs, and Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

What’s the one take away you want your fans to feel after they listen to your music?

Feel self-empowered and playful.

What is on your playlist right now?

Bub Pratt’s latest album, I love it, also been listening to Emily Wells.

When did you know you wanted to be an entertainer?

When I was a kid.

What’s on your musical bucket list?

Would love to be on billboard charts, nominated for Grammy someday, would be sweet. Have a song on the radio. It should be pretty cool to get my “Universe at your fingertips” song into an iPad commercial or something.

Any plans for future touring?

Not immediate plans, but it would be great if I had the opportunity to do so. I love traveling. Traveling and music combined sounds awesome.

What is your first musical memory as a child?

A church song “Popcorn popping on the apricot tree”

Do you play any instruments?

Guitar, piano, and kind of drums (haven’t played regularly for a few years). I want to add some more to the list soon.

What’s your typical day like?

Wake up around 8am, have some tea and coffee, listen to inspirational YouTube videos or music, go for a walk with a dog, write in a journal and a to-do list.

What’s your fashion style?

Kind of neutral colors and reds, I love leather boots and my converse sneakers. I don’t know how to describe my style. Sometimes skirts but mostly jeans or leggings.

What do you do to relax?

Take a bubble bath, meditate, listen to self-hypnosis, go on walks, and massage.

What are your hobbies?

Playing instruments, reading about all kinds of things, especially travel memoirs and funny stuff like David Sedaris, hiking, spending time in nature, and traveling.

What’s your favorite type of food? Do you cook?

Thai, Mexican, Japanese, and Korean. I do cook; I like to make a lot of soups and simple but tasty and healthy things.

How has the pandemic impacted your life?

Started making more money. Had to cancel some big travel plans to go to India with a good friend to go shopping for her wedding saree.

What’s the one thing you think everyone could do to make the world a more positive place?

To not hold anyone else responsible for their happiness, also to follow your passions.

If there was one recording artist you wanted to meet, who would that be?

Dolly Parton seems cool…or Jewel.

What is the best part about being famous?

I’m not famous yet, but I do enjoy having an audience of fans who resonate with my music, and hearing from them how I have positively impacted their lives feels really good.

President Biden Raises Refugee Admission Cap to 62,500 People

In a move to reverse former President Donald Trump’s stricter admission cap on refugees, President Biden has raised the admission cap to 62,500 people in the next six months. Originally, Trump had administered a cap on 15,000 refugees. At first, Biden said he would stick to this figure, but changed his stance after receiving condemnation from Democrats on Capitol Hill. In a statement issued by the White House addressing this political reversal, Biden commented “This erases the historically low number set by the previous administration of 15,000, which did not reflect America’s values as a nation that welcomes and supports refugees.” The New York Times says that Biden’s statement acknowledged how Trump’s budget and staffing cuts during his presidency makes it more unlikely to handle resettling 62,500 refugees within the coming year. In his statement, Biden admitted “the sad truth is that we will not achieve 62,500 admissions this year,” he said. “We are working quickly to undo the damage of the last four years. It will take some time, but that work is already underway.”

Pfizer Vaccine to be Administered to Adolescents

The availability of the Pfizer vaccine is soon to more accessible to millions more Americans. The FDA is said to authorize the use of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine for adolescents aged 12-15 by early next week. Pfizer has recently released trial results in which show their vaccine to be at least as effective for adolescents as it is for the adult population. If granted access, the CDC will likely meet the following day to review the clinical trial data and announce public health recommendations for adolescent vaccinations. Over 100 million adults have already been vaccinated, and with the Pfizer vaccine becoming available to millions more, the level of public immunity is forecasted to rise, and the number of deaths and hospitalizations are to drop.

In order to target vaccinations to younger Americans, Biden announced on Tuesday that mass vaccinations sites would shift to more local settings. He also stated his goal of vaccination 70% of Americans by July’s Independence Day. To those who are unvaccinated, Biden plead: “This is your choice. Its life and death.” On Tuesday, the Biden Administration announced that tens of millions more Americans need to get vaccinated before the rate of the coronavirus will be low enough to return to normalcy.

Subway Overpass Collapse Results in the Death of 23 People

Late Monday night in Mexico City, the collapse of a subway overpass–and subsequent fall of an active train car– resulted in the deaths of 23 people. Dozens of more victims are suffering injuries. The accident occurred on Line 12, one of the newer tracks in Mexico’s subway system. The subway system has been plagued by safety concerns from the public after a severe earthquake in 2017. Over 70 people were transported to the nearby hospitals, most of them delivered to Belisario Dominguez Hospital. Mexico’s fire fighters, military, and forensics department all arrived on scene to aid in the rescuing and recovery of the accident’s victims. Currently, Line 12 will remain closed as authorities investigate the harrowing accident. The Mayor of Mexico City, Claudio Steinbaum, spoke to reporters on Tuesday morning: ” At this moment, we can’t speculate about what happened. There has to be a deep investigation, and whoever is responsible has to be held responsible.”

Derek Chauvin Files for New Trial Regarding Murder of George Floyd

The trial of the police officer involved in the killing of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was found guilty of one count of second-degree murder, one count of third-degree murder, and one count of second-degree manslaughter by Judge Peter Cahill. However, Chauvin’ lawyer, Eric Nelson, is now claiming that Chauvin’s rights were violated during the trial since Judge Cahill refused a change of venue regarding where the trial was help. As a result of such, Nelson claims that the pre-trial publicity deprived Chauvin of a fair trial. NPR reports that Nelson also has cited “prosecutorial and jury misconduct; errors of law at trial; and a verdict that is contrary to law.” In Nelson’s file motion that requests another trial, he argues that the court “abused its discretion” because of the nationwide publicity of the high-profile trial. Due to the mass publicity of the trial, Nelson says that the defense’s expert witnesses and jury felt “threatened of intimidated, felt race-based pressure during the proceedings.”

NPR reports that according to Nelson’s file motion, the court abused its discretion by:

When it failed to sequester the jury for the duration of the trial, or in the least, admonish them to avoid all media

When it permitted the State to present cumulative evidence with respect to use of force
When it failed to order that a record be made of the numerous sidebars that occurred during the trial
When it submitted instructions to the jury that failed to accurately reflect the law with respect to second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and authorized use of force

NPR’s Carrie Johnson reports on how infrequently officers are called to conduct while in uniform, “Some studies show only seven police officers since 2005 have been convicted of murder for their actions on the job. That’s even though about 1,000 or 1,100 people a year die at the hands of police.” The way in which Derek Chauvin’s initial trial ended was a long-awaited plea for justice that many Americans felt finally acknowledged and held accountable the perpetrators of police violence and systemic racism in the nation. Ultimately, it is up to Judge Peter Cahill to decide whether to open trial again for Chauvin.

Facebook’s Suspension of Donald Trump Continues

Since the Capitol insurrection on January 1, Facebook has suspended Trump’s usage of the platform. The length and permanence of the suspension has been hotly debated lately, especially since Facebook doesn’t have a standard policy or punishment regarding indefinite suspensions. On Wednesday, a team of journalists, activists, and lawyers upheld the social media company’s ban of Trump. Their discussion ended any immediate return of Trump to the platform, and sparked debate concerning freedom of speech online. Facebook’s Oversight Board cited their reasoning for banning Trump in January, stating that Trump “created an environment where a serious risk of violence was possible. At the time of Mr. Trump’s posts, there was a clear, immediate risk of harm and his words of support for those involved in the riots legitimized their violent actions.” After Facebook reviews its action, Trump may be able to return to the platform later down the line. Other social media giants, including Twitter and YouTube, also locked Trump’s accounts after the Capitol chaos. Trump has responded to the rulings with agitation, stating that “free Speech has been taken away from the President of the United States because the Radical Left Lunatics are afraid of the truth.” The New York Times reports that Facebook responded to their ruling in a statement, stating that the company is “‘pleased’ that the board recognized that its barring of Mr. Trump in January was justified. It said it would consider the ruling and ‘determine an action that is clear and proportionate.’”

Liz Cheney May Be Sequestered from G.O.P.

Rep. Liz Cheyney has received backlash from Republican lawmakers in the GOP party due to her public criticisms of former President Donald Trump. After Trump’s insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, she voted to impeach him from office. This vote to impeach Trump increased tensions between Cheyney and the members of the GOP leadership and other Republican lawmakers. Notably, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy questioned Cheyney’s ability to carry out her position in office, stating “I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message. We all need to be working as one if we’re able to win the majority.” At the Conservative Political Action Committee, Cheyney was asked if Trump should speak at the conference. She replied, “I’ve been clear in my views about President Trump and the extent to which following Jan. 6 I don’t believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country.” While her party oppositions have landed Cheyney in controversy, Sen. Mitt Romney tweeted on Tuesday, recognizing her honesty and dedication to her stance: “Every person of conscience draws a line beyond which they will not go: Liz Cheney refuses to lie.”

Olympians And Officials to Be Offered Pfizer Vaccine

The International Olympic Committee announced on Thursday that, in an effort to quell public safety concerns, athletes and official will be offered the Pfizer vaccine before arriving in Japan. Through utilization of domestic inoculation programs, vaccines are to be administered to patients in their home countries. However, there is no requirement for athletes, coaches, officials, or others attending the game to be vaccinated. So far, approximately only 1% of Japan’s residents have been fully vaccinated, according to The New York Times’ database. In a statement put out by the International Olympic Committee, it was notes that “any additional doses delivered by Pfizer and BioNTech will not be taken out of existing programs, but will be in addition to existing quotas and planned deliveries around the world.” Hopefully, the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer will bring celebration, instead of crisis.

ABOUT FERNANDA LAVERA

María Fernanda Lavera (b.1975-), from Buenos Aires, Argentina, discovered her fascination for art and painting through an aunt who imparted to her a love of sketching and textures.

At first glance, her paintings appear to be wall images, graffiti that draws attention to itself through its bluntness, its hypnotic colors, and a unique style, a good street artist needs to stand apart from so many others. By covering every centimeter of the surface with color and with the images of contemporary objects turned into reductions of themselves, becoming more symbols than objects.

The images appear to explode from the depths, releasing outlandish forms of intense colors that, in turn, generate contrasts of surprising expressiveness that seem to have been created by the artist’s unconscious sketches. This is when we glimpse the surreal world manifested by Lavera with an extreme passion and that informs the viewer – the spectator – of a certain state of inner turmoil. Among the recognizable forms are symbols, objects, and everyday contours that approach the realm of Pop Art. Her diverse range of themes ranges from psychedelic cartoons juxtaposed with figures of rabid cats and race cars, to the expression of visibly disturbing events. Watchful eyes and disproportionate and stooping witnesses seem to look on helplessly.

Lavera explains that she likes to let things happen intuitively, without a clear intent: she is fascinated by the effects of color, the play of light and shade that allow her to explore her moods freely. Painting is a visual conversation for her – a moment, a feeling, and, especially, an outlet that allows the possibility to express the mystery of life through a symbolic space of complete expressive freedom.

Manolis Projects is a family business owned by artist J. Steven Manolis and his wife Myrthia Moore. Additionally, Myrthia’s sons, Jason and Brian are helping to bring Manolis Projects to the next level of service and expertise. We all have different roles.

Steven brings his business expertise and profound knowledge of art history and curation, both as an artist and as the former (1997-2006) Chairman of the Advisory Board of the National Academy of Design in New York City. Prior to his Chairmanship, he spent 1987-1997 serving as a Member of the Advisory Board of the National Academy of Design. He also served as a Trustee and Development Director of the Vermont Studio Center, from 2007 until 2016. This is the largest international artist residency program in the United States. He was also a Trustee of the Emily Mason Wolf Kahn Foundation from 2007-2016.

Many of our gallery artists are members of the National Academy of Design (National Academicians.) Additionally, we strive to bring new artists who have the potential of becoming collectible artists. We want to help our clients invest in art they love and that has the potential to appreciate over time.

Myrthia has a background in finance and economics, as well as, having a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is also an artist who designs jewelry.

In support of BLUE and its cause, Desenio continues to celebrate the beauty of our oceans through newly launched art prints. With Clean Sea, our newest collection of art prints, we want to help BLUE draw attention to the crisis in the oceans and support a solution that preserves life and beauty beneath the surface of the ocean.

The threats facing our oceans are not new. They have existed for a long time, and are escalating quickly. 90% of wild fish stocks are now overfished or fully exploited, wreaking havoc on marine ecology. When one fish species is overfished, the chain reaction is immense.

Skaters are known to look at everyday objects through the lens of what could be done on a board. The ordinary traveler sees a dull baggage claim, where a skateboarder sees a prime ledge. On May 1-2, five crews each comprised of four to five skaters and one filmer representing TN, AL, FL and LA met up at the old MSY Terminal for the ultimate skate jam and content capture sessions.

Red Bull Terminal Takeover transformed the former New Orleans airport into three custom-built parks, creating a dream destination for skateboarding. The abandoned terminal took on new life as skaters slid, grabbed and grinded iconic airport features, giving the aged facility an edgy upgrade.

“We spend so much of our lives in airports as pro skaters,” said Red Bull athlete Jake Wooten. “We take four-hour layovers and daydream about what could be done on our boards. I look at stairs and rails. They’re the smallest architectural features but a skate spot is all I see,” he said. “The fact that Red Bull was able to make it happen and turn an old airport into a park is like something out of a video game.”

The active runway overlooking the new world-class terminal at MSY served as the panoramic backdrop for takeoffs, landings and maneuvers of a different kind. Over the course of two days, New York Design and Construction (NYDAC) converted the once abandoned airport into a lively park, featuring three unique course designs and features conducive to different styles of riding.

The parabola was the hero location with its stunning pre-existing architecture. The NYDAC build team modified the escalators for skaters to roll down, added a simple but technical A-frame with a rail, custom-built a 6ft quarter pipe channel gap and designed a vertical wall set against the iconic mid-century glass arch.

The baggage claim section brought every skater’s video game fantasy to life, as the carousel covered in plywood created a space for the sport to go where hasn’t gone before. Carpet and rubber were no match for the build team, who added rails, ledges and ramps – transforming the monotonous belt system into a playground for imagination, complete with rideable kiosks and countertops.

Concourse D mimicked a runway built for speed, offering skaters a long hallway and a smooth surface for pushing. The five skate crews each made creative use of the edge ramps, island piece and any nearby objects worth riding – including print newspaper boxes, trash cans and luggage props.

“I was really excited for the opportunity to have people from New Orleans experience something like this because it doesn’t happen often here,” said Phil Santosusso, owner of Humidity Skate Shop in the French Quarter. “New Orleans typically gets skipped because our city is small compared to New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. To be able to give that opportunity to the crews here was amazing.”

Each of the five participating teams will submit a two-minute video compilation for a fan-sourced vote on redbull.com later this month. The winning crew will receive a $5000 prize toward their local skate scene.

Here at 360 Magazine, we spoke with Jake Wooten about his involvement with Red Bull’s Terminal Takeover, advise for young skaters, and what skate culture means to him.

What was your original envisioning for transforming the MSY airport terminal space into a skate park?

The whole concept was kind of to create the Tony Hawk level. Have awesome quarter pipes & ledges on top of all the amenities the airport already offers that are skate-able. Just congregate it all together.

How was it decided what skate shops to feature in the competition?

We tried to keep it true to the south. We picked a lot of the bigger skate shops from the area that we live in.

Can you talk a bit about how the winning team be voted on by the fans, instead of relying on a panel of judges?

That’s the coolest part, it’s not just three people judging us on all these team’s hard work. Now it’ll be thousands of people able to access the footage and watch it and decide who they enjoy the most to watch.

What does skate culture mean to you?

Everything. Skate culture is what saved my life. It gives me validation to go do things I need to go do. Gives me energy, gives me hope. Gives me everything honestly.

What tips do you have for young skaters who look up to you as a pro, and want to achieve the same status?

Honestly, don’t give up and be as passionate and consistent as you can. If you love it, then go for it! There’s gotta be a way you can make it happen. It may not be exactly the way you planned it, but there’s a way you can make it happen one way or another, you know?

Beautyque NYC, a virtual shopping, beauty and wellness experience, unveiled its consumer survey results assessing “Beauty Consumer Trends: Has the Pandemic Changed Beauty Routines?” One of the largest results stemming from the survey is that nearly 75% of respondents indicated they have changed their beauty routines since the pandemic started.

Beautyque NYC Founder & Owner Sonia Khemiri explains why these trends have occurred: “For most of us, many aspects of our lives have changed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as of March 2020. As a result, we’ve had to adapt our routines, habits, and lifestyles to fit the ‘new normal.’” She continues “Interested in seeing how consumers’ beauty habits have changed nowadays, Beautyque NYC developed a survey for consumers. We wanted to know, are they wearing more or less makeup than before? Do they purchase skincare more or less often? What are they looking for in the brands they support?”

Before the Pandemic

Before the pandemic, respondents said they bought their beauty products in retailers such as, Sephora/Ulta and Drug Stores (71.3%), from Amazon (43.9%), or directly from the brand’s website (45.2%). Among the various Beauty categories, skincare, body care, hair care, and makeup were all used daily. Nail care and fragrances were often used. Lastly, tools & devices were reported to be sometimes used. They often purchased skincare, haircare, body care, and makeup, and sometimes bought fragrance, tools & devices, and nail care products.

Nearly 40 percent of the respondents indicated that their beauty routines have definitely changed as a result of the pandemic, while 36.8% answered that their routine has only somewhat changed, and 17.3% answered that their beauty routine has not changed.

Their place of preference for making the purchase is Amazon, Sephora/Ulta, and directly on the brand’s website. Skincare and body care products are used daily, hair care is used often, and nail care, fragrance, tools and devices are all used sometimes. Most of the products are purchased sometimes; however, none of them are purchased daily.

On average, 59% of respondents claimed to use makeup less often since the pandemic, and 30% uses makeup the same amount as before the pandemic. In relation to skincare, nearly 50% of survey respondents use the same amount of time as before and just over 40% use skincare more often now. Fragrance and nail care items are used less often than before. Hair care, body care, tools and devices are all used for the same amount of time as before the pandemic.

About Makeup

Makeup consumers tend to buy products for a variety of aesthetic reasons. The most used makeup products used on a daily basis as reported by survey respondents include mascara, eyeshadow, lip gloss, foundation, and concealer. Beautyque found that the largest percentage of survey responders, 72%, answered they wear it since it gives them a confidence boost. The second largest percentage of repsonders, 65.3%, said makeup makes them feel more beautiful. Finally, 55% of responders reported that they wear makeup to hide imperfections.“The vast majority of consumers use makeup as a means of improving their overall self-esteem and perception,” Sonia adds.

About Skincare

The most used makeup products used on a daily basis were reported to be cleanser/face wash, moisturizer, eye cream and serum. “These products are the foundation to a consistent skincare routine,” Sonia says.

About Purchase Criteria

Beautyque’s survey also assessed important factors when deciding whether or not to purchase a beauty product. Respondents reported the criteria most important in making the decision to purchase included the product having clean ingredients, good reviews, and a reasonable price point.

“In terms of the brands our survey respondents support and purchase from: the price has to be reasonable, the product has to be cruelty-free, consist of high-performance formulas, made from clean and natural ingredients, and offer an inclusive shade range,” Sonia says. “Social media platforms, friends and family, and influencers are the top resources the respondents use to gain information on beauty trends along with researching beauty products online before making a purchase.”

Factors that affect their level of trust in a brand are knowing the brand’s founders’ story, hearing influencers mention it, and a well-known brand, Sonia adds. “Trust is derived from the brand’s reputation as a direct reflection of the products.”

These are definitely times of change for the beauty industry. “It is pertinent to keep an open eye on consumers’ behaviors and preferences,” Sonia advises. “Beautyque NYC strives to help indie brands reach their maximum potential and to deliver the best products to consumers.”

Here at 360 Magazine, we spoke with Beautyque NYC Founder & Owner Sonia Khemiri about how Beautyque’s survey was conducted, future beauty industry trend predictions, and her best product recommendations for day and night skin routines:

How did you conduct your consumer survey?

The survey was conducted virtually through a detailed online form that we distributed to our subscriber base of beauty enthusiasts and consumers. We asked them questions regarding beauty trends at various times to see what has changed over the course of the pandemic.

How large of a study did you conduct? How many people were surveyed overall?

The study consisted of 231 responses*.

*From a total of 231 responses, 98.3% of 229 were females. The breakdown of age groups goes as follows: 35 to 44 years old (26.1%), 45 to 54 years old (23%), and 24 to 34 years old (20.8%). The annual income of the groups starts with 47.3% of respondents having an income of $50,000 or less, 34.1% with an income of $50,000 to $99,000, and 15.9% with an income of $100,000 to $249,000. The respondents were primarily from New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

What do you predict is the largest factor in beauty routine changes during the pandemic?

Based on the survey conducted, the largest factor that changed during the pandemic was how [many] more consumers developed a greater sense of awareness toward beauty and wellness products. Areas that consumers expressed their concern were on clean ingredients, sustainability, ease of application, and effectiveness. Additionally, their preference on where they buy their beauty routine products has changed significantly from retailers to online shopping.

As the pandemic begins to less across the US, do you predict these changes to be long-term or temporary?

We believe that some habits will definitely stick around even after the pandemic, such as at-home routines and buying online. The pandemic forced individuals to color their own hair, do their own nails, and perform their own facials. This change is predicted to be long-term due to convenience and cost-effectiveness. Online shopping allows consumers to perform more research on their products and grant them a greater access to new products that fit their needs, especially with all the digital development explosion during the pandemic such as VR, AR and AI. Even though brick-and-mortar stores are reopening across the U.S, we believe the shopping experience and the beauty routines built during the pandemic will be mixed in a way or another with offline experience and shopping.

What brands would you recommend to someone looking to start a beauty routine with high quality, cruelty-free products?

All the brands we have all carry high-quality products, but we will further elaborate on the cruelty-free brands.

For a night routine: we would always recommend to double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser to remove all unwanted residue. For oil cleansers, the Musaclean Organic Pure Melt Cleansing Oil Gel from Kadalys will get rid of all oil-soluble impurities in the first wash. The second cleanser I would recommend is the Detox Cleanser +3 from Liftlab–this medical grade cleanser will clean and prep your skin for maximum skincare absorption. Next, I would use a Limited 2020 Edition Lotion by Yon-Ka Paris to treat the skin after double cleansing. For serums, the Australian Botanicals Pro-Aging Treatment Concentrate Serum from Founder’s Formula will help restore the skin’s collagen production. To finish off any good routine, moisturizer is must-have!
