Following the release of their #3 acclaimed third album Moral Panic last year, Southend five-piece Nothing But Thieves have released their dark and explorative new single and video Futureproof via Sony Music UK/RCA Records, which was premiered on BBC Radio 1 last night as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World.

Nothing But Thieves are a band that continue to evolve their sound, and new single Futureproof sees them experiment further whilst remaining authentically them. Produced by Richard Costey (Biffy Clyro, Foo Fighters, Muse) and recorded between London’s RAK Studios and guitarist/keyboardist Dom’s home studio, it is a sinister, dynamic and unpredictable track that examines the meaning of self-preservation through powerful lyrics. The video, directed by Jake Jelicich, sees the band bathed in an auburn glow giving an intense performance that is filmed chaotically, matching the energy and uneasiness of the song. The band say;

“’Futureproof’ is about self-preservation; what that means to different people and the lengths that those people would go to achieve it.

It’s designed to be a guitar rock and hip-hop hybrid. That can be a bit of an eye roller and it’s easy to get wrong, but there’s a parallel between some of our heavier songs and the more aggressive side of hip-hop, which we wanted to try and get at. It’s dark and chromatic and then it’s mixed like a hip-hop track with loud drums and vocals. The idea was to try and explore that territory in the most authentic and fresh way.”

Futureproof follows the singles Is Everybody Going Crazy?, Real Love Song and Impossible released last year from their third album Moral Panic, which achieved over 102 million streams and saw support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, Virgin Radio and Radio X alongside winning Best Indie Act at Global Radio’s 2021 Awards. The album was a poignant moral outcry on the world tinged with emotion, anger and hope, which thematically touched on climate change, anxiety around social media, political chaos and an overall desire to switch off. Moral Panic followed their 2018 EP What Did You Think When You Made Me This Way, their 2017 acclaimed album Broken Machine, which charted at #2 in the UK album chart, and their debut self-titled album Nothing But Thieves.

The past few years have been quite a ride for Nothing But Thieves. Amassing over 1 million worldwide album sales and over 907 million worldwide streams, they have built up a loyal and wide following for their impactful alt rock sound, cementing themselves as one of the best current rock bands in the world. Selling 150,000 tickets on their last album campaign, which included a sold-out show at London’s Alexandra Palace and selling out their entire worldwide Broken Machine headline tour, their success has been global.

The band have performed on US TV shows, such as James Corden and Jimmy Kimmel, after their debut became the bestselling debut from a UK rock band in the US in 2015 and played packed out international shows from Poland to Amsterdam, where they headlined an arena to 6,000 fans. After intimately debuting new songs early last year for a BRITs/War Child gig, they were set to tour internationally last Spring, including a show to 6,500 people at Moscow Adrenaline Stadium.

Following 3 livestream performances Live from the Warehouse last year to launch Moral Panic, they are finally bringing songs from the album to live audiences this Autumn with a UK, Ireland and European tour, including their biggest ever headline London show at O2 Arena. Bitcoin And Online Casinos

Is Bitcoin a viable payment method for online casinos?

There are many payment methods that can be used at online casinos. Bitcoin is being accepted by a growing number of online gambling sites. Bitcoin never seems to be out of the papers these days, so is it a viable payment method for use at an online casino?

The mere fact that online casinos are accepting Bitcoin as a payment method speaks volumes. It is not going to be helpful to anyone if a payment method employed by them is going to cause big problems.

These online casinos will have put a great deal of thought into whether to allow the use of Bitcoin or not. It’s not an overnight decision. A great deal of thought has been put into their decision, and the fact they allow Bitcoin’s use should be seen as a huge vote of confidence in the cryptocurrency.

One site that supports this cryptocurrency is Bitcoin Games online casino. It’s important to do some research before joining any site. Taking a good look at a Bitcoin Games review is helpful. This review gives you plenty of information about the site.

Safety is so important when it comes to online payments. There is still a fair amount of financial fraud that takes place, and of which no one wants to become a victim. Bitcoin can help in this area because of the way it operates as a currency.

Unlike with a credit or debit card, there is no central bank in play with Bitcoin. It is the person who makes the financial transaction that owns the Bitcoin being used. The amount of personal information being made available to possible fraudsters is always a worry with banks, but that’s not the case if you are using Bitcoin. The fraudsters will be upset when realizing they can’t get their hands on your currency. The customer and the online casino itself will be impressed with this situation.

Another worry is that your bank account might be frozen. If you are using a debit or credit card for your financial transactions, it will cause you major problems. However, Bitcoin avoids these issues due to that lack of a central bank.

It’s not just a central bank that is absent. Furthermore, there’s no government to deal with this currency, though the Chinese government are doing their best to warn people off its use. Online sites will be happy that there’s no government to deal with, another reason they like using Bitcoin. There’s no taxation either and transactions cannot be reversed.

There are some disadvantages with Bitcoin, but that can be said of any payment method. How many times do you hear people moaning about their bank or PayPal? The main problem with Bitcoin is how its value can be volatile. That’s common with any relatively new currency and will hopefully settle down in the future. However, that’s more of a worry for those investing with Bitcoin. Just using Bitcoin to gamble online is a much better and safer way of using it.

The 6th Clothing Co. QxA

The 6th Clothing Co. creates athleisure wear that inspires greatness and brings people together. On the 6th Clothing Co.’s website, the brand defines their mindset as such: “6th man” mentality: patience and sacrifice in the face of adversity, but always a belief in himself and what could be accomplished when it’s your time to shine.” The recent drop of the Summer of 6th Collection highlights this optimistic attitude. Pieces from the collection, such as the One Tribe Unisex Demin Jacket and the Summer ’21 Give More Tee are printed with positive messages to uplift and motivate customers to “Do More, Be More, and Give More Together.” To learn more about the 6th Clothing Co., visit their website. A portion of proceeds from all purchases will be donated to various non-profit organizations.

We spoke with founder/CEO Badi Tolo about the inspiration behind the 6th man mentality, nonprofits that the 6th Clothing Co. collaborates with, and exciting upcoming pop-up shop opportunities.

How do you define the clothing style of streetwear?

Unisex athleisure wear for all ages.

What nonprofits does the 6th Clothing CO. work with?

Currently, I’m spotlighting two great nonprofits, A Little Help (support elderly citizens by connecting neighbors) and Colorado Skateboarding Society (trying to get funding and support to build a top-of-the-line skate facility in Colorado where everyone is welcome). I’ve worked with close to 15 various non-profits though over a span of just over 2 years (one of which included a pandemic, haha) and all my products that aren’t specific to those nonprofits automatically contribute 6% of proceeds to various select nonprofits with every order. Long story short–the spotlight periods are focused on one or two [charities] at a time, but I want to continue to support as many causes and organizations as I can over time, with the resources I have available. I believe [that] helping out those who help those beyond my reach is having an impact [that] I (and my customers) can’t measure, but it’s one the world needs.

On your website’s About section, you mention sacrifice in the face of adversity. Did you come up with the “6th Man” mentality? If not, where does this idea come from?

As far as I know, I came up with it haha. I think generally a 6th man on a bench has a mentality that drives him/her, but I guess I just decided to define it as the core of my brand because I played ball when I was younger and [it] just kind of fit the career and passions I’ve had professionally. When I played, I started but I never viewed myself as someone who was just given anything. So, I always tried to leave it out there and play with that chip on my shoulder, like a 6th man would.

It was something I defined a little later in life as my “6th Man Mentality”. I think I honed-in on that message most coming out of high school when I reflected on regretting not giving basketball another shot after I was cut from my sophomore team and diagnosed with lymphoma cancer shorty after. That was pretty traumatic for me as a 15–16-year-old kid. I just kind of moved on through the rest of my high school life without revisiting the game I loved so much before the cancer thing. Going into college, I knew that I had sort of quit on something that I loved doing because of the cancer, because of the fear, because of pride. I knew I had more to give than that, so I decided going into college I would do everything I loved and could and go hard with it. I got more into music, I played new sports. I played gym ball for hours a day multiple times a week for basically 5 years. I became pretty decent and just had fun playing again while going through college. I was just grateful for the opportunity again, and I would give it everything I could–whether it was gym ball, city league hoops, music, school, family, work. That’s what the 6th man/woman does. They sacrifice for the team, but they know what they [need to do to] bring and relish those opportunities. That approach has driven me throughout life and lead to many more opportunities, personally and professionally, that I’m grateful for.

What is your favorite piece of apparel you have ever produced?

The first tee I ever did. [The] logo was huge right across the front of the chest and it says, “One Tribe” (which is my slogan/tagline) in a script font. I got a small run of tees printed and was just excited. [It] felt like that vision to have a brand where I could spread that [6th Man] mentality was finally here and real. I gave one to my mom, [and] kept one for myself. Funny story–I actually had a friend who [went] to a Meet and Greet with Mike Shinoda, at a concert of his we went to back in 2018. My buddy did me a solid and gave him one of my shirts, which I was super hype on because I was a big fan back in the day. [The] Linkin Park/Jay-Z collab was on repeat back then! Anyways, [I] always hoped I’d see a photo of him randomly wearing it someday haha, but it was just cool that he accepted it and signed a card my buddy gave to me. I don’t even think I have it up on my store anymore, but I might have to bring it back!

How would you describe the look of the “Summer of 6th ’21 Collection”?

[The] Summer of 6th look is just rolling with the current trend of tie dye prints. I wanted a little pop of color, which I’m trying to do a little more of with my brand. So, [I] got pink, sky blue, and black mixed with white tie die all over [the] print products. [Staying] true to the brand, I have to keep that message going, so a couple [pieces] say “DO MORE, BE MORE, GIVE MORE.” I’ll be adding a couple pieces to match (bathing suit, women’s dress and some youth options) probably in late June. There’s a little something for everyone, so get it while it’s hot! Everybody’s rockin’ the tie dye right now. Might as well give back and make a difference automatically while you’re shopping for it.

Do you have a favorite piece from the “Summer of 6th ’21 Collection?

The Diamond Mentality Tee. [It] has my logo masked out in tie die with a diamond shape around it, and the word “mentality” across the front. Simple and to the point. That’s what it’s all about for me. That’s how I built this brand, how I’m building my life and career. It’s always about your mentality through the ups and downs. Sometimes you need a reminder, so why not say it with your chest? It’s there for you and for anyone who can draw a little fire and inspiration from it.

Can you tell us about any exciting, upcoming artists who are to be featured within The Drop Collection?

I do have a collab in the works that will speak to the Stop Asian Hate movement, so I will hopefully be dropping a tee for that in July. I have a sponsor [who is working] on that tee who is based in the Bay area. Th[ey] do a lot for youth in the Asian community there. A percentage of sales proceeds will go directly back to them to support their efforts in the community and spread the word.

Aside from that, I’ll continue to feature a friend, Curt Fulsty of C Fulsty Books as one of my current featured artists. He illustrates children’s books about difficult issues that sometimes adults tend to gloss over or avoid. I think that’s important in today’s world, so I was happy to collab with him.

I’d love to work with a music artist for sure as I’ve always just been a big music fan. My first Drop Collection collab was with an artist/radio personality out of LA, named Jackie Hollywood. We did some lyric merch from a music video when it dropped, so I want to do more of that. The 6th is a new brand on the scene, so really I’m just hustling to try and get the name out, make a few sales, and support these nonprofits. So, I’m open to opportunities or people of interest that like the vibe and want to make something happen.

What is to come from the 6th Clothing Co. in the rest of 2021?

Some new merch for sure. With my current nonprofit spotlight, I’ll be doing a little popup at an event later this month where there will be a bunch of skate brands and other partners there to support their mission of building a skate facility here in Colorado. So, that’s exciting to be a part of that. I’ve got a couple more nonprofit spotlights lined up, so [I] will be working behind the scenes on that. Aside from that, sky is the limit. I always say, “Wherever I’m at in life with my brand, with my mission–I’m just getting started.” It’s all about mentality so who knows what the future holds, but I’m excited about it.

The events will be capped off with an incredible firework show over the Pacific Ocean.

“There’s no better place to celebrate the 4th of July than Huntington Beach,” says Mayor Kim Carr. “Our residents truly embrace the spirit of independence, and we invite the community to come out and take part in the modified celebration. We have something for everyone and look forward to celebrating with you this year.”

Cry Baby Cry image from Stephanie June via Jon Bleicher at Prospect PR for use by 360 Magazine

Stephanie June QxA

With the release of her new single and music video for “Cry Baby Cry,” NYC singer Stephanie June delivers a pop ballad that’s “just in time for summer,” capturing the feeling of catharsis, about taking a break from seeking answers, and giving yourself the thing you want most. Filmed at the annual “Dance Walk” in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the video captures New York in this singular moment in time as it experiences a rebirth, channeling the energy of the summer into “a breezy pop experience.” We sat down with the passionate and talented Stephanie June to chat about her eagerly-awaited release of “Cry Baby Cry,” how the pandemic affected her song writing, and the energy of New York City.

What reaction are you expecting when “Cry Baby Cry” is released?

I think this song is going to make people really happy. I wrote it as an emotional ballad, but then my producers, Daniel Alvarez and Jordan Dunn-Pilz, and I turned it into an upbeat summer pop song.  So the energy is high, but once you peel away that layer, the lyrics bring you to a different place. I imagine people listening to it in the car with the top down, screaming the lyrics uncontrollably. I think people will hear it and think – ‘I’ve felt that, I’ve been there.’

What are you most excited about concerning the release of your new single?

I’m excited to bring some much needed good energy to this world. All of my friends are ready to be free and live their lives this summer. I can’t wait to get to sing this song live. Writing music makes me so happy, but at a certain point you’ve been with a song long enough, and it’s time to give it wings. I hoarded my music for way too long, which I honestly now feel is pretty selfish. So I’m just excited to share it with people and let them love it as much as I do.

Can you speak about why your music video was chosen to be filmed at the “Dance Walk” in Williamsburg, Brooklyn?

I asked my friend Seth Hagenstein, a brilliant director, if he’d be up for making this video. We got to brainstorming and thought it would be amazing to capture the energy of New York at this particular moment in time–the city revived and the excitement on the streets palpable. He wanted to mirror the complicated feelings in the song with the layered experience of going back into the world fully. He had his friend Gilaad Amir organize a “Dance Walk” for 100 friends. It was seriously one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of. People were joining from off the street. It didn’t feel like a video shoot – Seth just captured the joy everyone was experiencing in the moment. So ultimately the video feels really organic and spontaneous, which I love. He created a really beautiful piece of art that elevates the song.

What message do you want “Cry Baby Cry” to convey to fans?

I want fans to hear this song and be empowered to own their experiences. I wrote it at the height of Covid/quarantine, when it felt like the world was ending. It’s about having very intense feelings for someone and giving over to those feelings for a moment. I wrote it stream-of-consciousness style, so it takes you on a journey. Ultimately I think the listener will feel some cognitive dissonance between the lyrics and the upbeat vibe. This is intentional. Not every relationship is straightforward and simple, but even the “wrong relationship” can have a place in our life story.

What was your transition from theater to songwriting like?

I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid, but planned to spend my life singing in theater and immersing myself in fascinating characters. All through acting classes, a teacher would say something and it would inspire a lyric. I’d come home at night to my piano and write songs – that was my happy place. A big lesson you get in acting class is – don’t create a picture in your head of what the scene will look like. Let it happen and be completely in the moment, let the moment change you. There were actors in my classes who were living and breathing theater. That made me realize music has always been like breathing for me. So ultimately I took that lesson, and it brought me back to my first love.

Who would be your dream music collaborator to work with?

Ohh this is a tough one. So many incredible artists I’d love to work with. Mark Ronson would be a total dream. I met him on the street once and was completely starstruck. He created some timeless magic with Amy Winehouse, one of the greatest to ever do it. And he’s built a diverse body of work. He doesn’t impose too much of his own style – he lets true artistry shine through. And he’s a die hard New Yorker, which we share.

How has the pandemic affected/changed your songwriting processes?

The pandemic has majorly changed my process. It’s given me the time and space to really hear my thoughts. I’ve been writing completely for myself. The uninterrupted, guilt-free sessions were just unheard of before the pandemic. And this time has made me realize that there is never a dull moment in life – there is always something going on internally to write about. You know those movies where nothing significant is really happening but everything is happening, like “Lost in Translation?” Some of what I’ve been writing feels like that. It’s the little in between moments that are interesting to me.

There’s also a more selfless nature to writing these days. I think more about how people will relate, how to change their day. I wrote my first single, “They Say New York Is Dead,” when I had Covid. It poured out over two days and I recorded it in my apartment. I shared it because I knew a lot of people were feeling what I was feeling. There’s been so much boiling under the surface for everyone. So to get to unearth all of it and write about it has been fun.

Can you share any other exciting releases you have coming up in 2021?

I plan to release an EP of 6 songs in October, which I’m super excited about. I’ve written a lot over the last couple years, so I’m still figuring out what will be on there. It’ll be stylistically diverse for sure. Can’t wait for you guys to hear.

Jforte QxA

By: Ally Brewster

Throughout this pandemic, the artist Jesse Forte, known as Jforte, has continued to do what he has done his whole career since he began making music in 2013: push the boundaries of his music and what he can do as an artist. Jforte is constantly creating and expanding as he has out a new song every week over the course of the pandemic (55+ weeks). Throughout his career he has also founded his business “Young Revolutionary Minds,” hosts the YRM podcast, wrote three books, launching products, and training to become an astronaut, all while giving back to and empowering his community. His song “Make It Happen” is culmination of his drive, story he wants to put out into the world to inspire others. We had the opportunity to ask Jforte about his career and what’s next for the artist:

You stated that making music consistently throughout the pandemic was a goal of yours, and you’ve clearly done that with one song produced each week for 55+ weeks. Where did the idea of weekly songs come from and why was it so important to be weekly?

After writing my third book, “Make It Happen” and listening to “It’s All In Your Head” 200 times, I realized I needed to be consistent and treat my gift like a job. Once I heard Russ express it the way he did, it made sense to me and I tried it out. So far, it’s been going well and getting better! Being able to put out a song weekly keeps me energized to create. I know that people may not listen right then and there, but the music will be there forever and it’s better to start now than later.

What is the production process like when you are making a new song every week? Is it any different than the production of other work you have made?

At first, I had music I wrote to beats that were famous. Then, I shopped around for beats that made sense for the music I was putting out. I would purchase the beats and write music to them. Once I got the hang of it, I started buying more beats, listening, and then sitting down. [I would use] pen and paper [to] writ[e] down my feelings, thoughts, ideas, concepts and purpose. The more I write, the better I get.

Once I get the lyrics down, I start to rehearse them, call up an engineer, and prep for the studio. I generally have at least 5 songs ready to go, just because I like to truly take advantage of the opportunity of using the booth–time is money. Most of my sessions last between 3- 5 hours.

When I write books, I try to write 2-3 pages a day. When I wrote “Fail Forward Through Success,” I would write in Cartel coffee in Tempe every day, and I wouldn’t leave until I pushed out 3 pages.  Same thing with “Redemption,” and “Make It Happen” was special because I wrote it during the pandemic.

Being someone as busy as you are, burnout seems inevitable. Have there been weeks where it felt impossible to make a song? Where do you look for inspiration in times where motivation may be lacking?

Whenever my mind becomes too loud, I get rest, meditate, take a break and when I feel better, I take a step forward with whatever the goal is. I’m cool with resting, but I’ll never lay down or give up on what I have intended to accomplish. Sometimes it doesn’t happen instantly, but patience and persistence have been the best lessons and gifts I possess. I have an engine that is going to go, whether I am motivated or would rather rest. That was instilled back at Parkview.

Was music always something you wanted to do, or was it more like a passion that snuck up on you? Who were your biggest inspirations when getting into the music industry?

I was talking to Bow Wow a couple weeks ago on IG live and told him I performed “Basketball” for the talent show.  We bumped Pac in the car when I was 3 and I could hear Rakim through the womb when I was being created. That’s just confirmation that I am supposed to be right where I am and that these conversations are blessings from the universe saying “we got you” and to keep going!

I’ve always wanted to be a rapper. My second-grade teacher told me, “No.” Subconsciously, I listened to her for 20 years. Then, this inner me said to fuck her opinion and be happy. I knew I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t pursuing what was in me. That why it’s important to be around people that lift you up and let you dream!

My influences are Jforte and Yé– fun fact: I performed Roses at America’s Got Talent. They liked it but I didn’t make it past the 1st round. [Also,] Drake, Immortal Technique, Uncle Snoop, Meek Mill, Drake, Logic, Doja Cat, Cardi B, Jack Harlow, Bow Wow, Gucci, Rakim, Jay-Z, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, Big Pun, 50 cent, Red Man, Method Man, HER, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Pharrell, Michale Jackson, Prince, Queen, Tribe Called Quest, Dr. Dre and so, so many more. I just love good music!

It’s apparent that “Make It Happen” is an important, encouraging phrase for you as it is both a song title as well as the title of your third book; where did that phrase come from and what does it mean to you personally?

“Make It Happen” became even more powerful for me once I started to realize that people enjoyed the song and it pumped them up! “Making It Happen” means that regardless of circumstance, we rise to the occasion. That means meeting a deadline, being there for your loved one or just staying committed to the vision you see within yourself.

My goal is to share my truth in a majority of my music. If you listen to what I say in “Make It Happen,” it’s everything I’ve specifically been through. By the way, I write 100% of my lyrics–no ghost writers or floating pens. I thought I should mention that because I take pride in making the music you hear from me.

You’ve pursued many different avenues throughout your life, from music, writing, and hosting podcasts to getting a technical degree in software engineering, college football, becoming an astronaut and even making a biodegradable toothbrush and charcoal toothpaste. What motivates you to explore so many different paths, many of which people choose as a career rather than trying to do it all at once?

I was a D student in elementary school. I bloomed in middle school and started getting A’s and B’s. Then high school hit, and I was a jock. Then college hit, and I did pretty well. I’ve had a chip on my shoulder most of my life, I think it comes from being an underdog, my upbringing, and just realizing I want the best for myself and the people that enter my life. I definitely haven’t taken an easy road, but I know that I rather take a road less travelled and lead the way than to do what’s easy and regret the journey I could have had.

On your podcast “Young Revolutionary Minds” you share and support people’s journeys in reaching their goals. What led you to decide to share these people’s stories as the topic of your podcast?

One of my favorite podcasters, and the reason why I started that, was because of Lewis Howes. He is a big inspiration to me and I love listening to his podcast, you should check it out! Listening to his [podcast], made me realize I have met amazing people around the world and I’d love to share what they are working on! On top of this, I wanted to build relationships with new people, learn from some of the new leaders of the world, and have something to do while I was figuring out who I was.

You’ve been through lots of highs and lows throughout your life. What advice would you give people, whether it be making it in the music industry, or just achieving their personal goals? What have you learned that you’d like to share with people?

Love yourself. Trust that you are someone to adore, and know that your dreams will manifest when you do the work. Secondly, make sure to fight for what you want. When I say fight, I mean relentlessly go after what you desire. If you don’t know, ask questions, preferably from people who have been there or know how to get there. When it comes to music, don’t be afraid to explore different genres. Put your music out, stop waiting for the perfect time. Right now is perfect and will improve! Lastly, create a vision board and look at it every day. Read it out loud, then do something each day that gets you closer. And dream big!

Being in the public eye you make impressions on people and inspire others. You seem to try to always give back to communities and try to have positive energy that you’re putting out into the world. What message or feeling are you trying to put out to the world? Why is it so important for you to have that positive energy you’re exuding?

Being an artist is a privilege and my vision is to inspire 7 billion people around the world through my voice, ways of life and community. I make a lot of music– some deep, some chill, others scary, and some gangster–but the message I’m putting out is, be you. Cuz I’m me, and I do it better than anyone in the world. 😉 Being me, of course.

In 2020 you came up with the ambition goal to release a new song every week, and you have not stopped. How long do you plan to continue that? What’s next for you in 2021?

I’m going to keep putting music out and when I need a break, I’ll rest. I make music because it’s my passion. In 2021, I’m manifesting opportunities to create music with the people I listen to like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Bow Wow, Drake Meek Mill and Russ. I plan on finding ways for more people to listen to my music and to be inspired.

RESPiRE by DESiGN

In 2015, veteran Nyja M. Grant’s health was drastically declining. Her doctor informed her that she was going to have to make a decision. She saw several specialists, and they all agreed. To ensure that she was making the right decision, Nyja began researching her condition, less evasive treatment options and what had possibly caused it.

Nyja’s research led her to alarming data. She learned that by age fifty, 80 percent of African American women of African descent are diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Nyja was astounded. Digging a little deeper, she found out that fibroids are the number one cause of hysterectomies and other reproductive issues. Several studies have linked the ingredients in African American beauty products to infertility, fibroids, and ovarian cysts. Many hair products on the market for Black women contain chemicals that affect hormones and can cause these bodily issues. These harmful ingredients contribute to the higher mortality rate concerning neo-natal deaths for Black women. With Nyja’s failing health, thinning hair and continuous alopecia flare ups, she decided to make a change.

Nyja chose to use this time to heal from the inside out. She promised to give herself a two-year grace period. During this time, she would not relax, cut, or dye her hair. She began to research alternative natural hair care and body products. Nyja searched for products that were safe, good quality and didn’t break her spending plan. To Nyja’s dismay, she was not able to find any products that she loved.

In formulating her product, Nyja chose to use ingredients that were free from parabens and mineral oils, with no dyes or unnatural fragrances. She instead only opts for necessary and natural components, such as avocado, argan and jojoba oil. Not only are her products FDA-approved, but they are also cold-pressed and organic. As such, her skin and hair care easily penetrates hair shafts and absorbs into the body. Nyja’s focus on clean integrants also reflects her simplistic approach to branding.

RESPiRE by DESiGN (RbD) products work for all hair types, no matter one’s ethnicity or gender. These unisex formulations can be also used for the face and skin to provide hydration, exfoliation, and moisturizing properties. R&D’s “Restore” neem oil is has anti-inflammatory attributes, which are great for rashes, eczema, and psoriasis. For those who struggle with pigmentation and dark spots, “Lots of Love” can be used directly on the skin or infused into bath water. The company’s oil can also be used for cuticle care and massages. A little bit of this product goes a long way, and because of its many uses, it is wonderful for travel. Nyja helps heal her customers from the inside out, and they continue to repurchase her trustworthy, versatile hair and skin care.

RESPiRE by DESiGN is geared towards 30–40-year-old women. However, Nyja’s demographic is expanding now more than ever as Black hair is becoming more protected by HR agencies. Whereas Black hair has wrongfully been seen as unprofessional– and children have been banned from school for sporting their natural styles– this antiquated attitude is beginning to shift. Now, celebrities like Justin Beiber are sporting dreads, and the politics of Black hair are being brought into the cultural conversation by change-makers like Gabrielle Union

As the years passed, Nyja started to give out her butters as gifts. People loved her healthy, safe, affordable product and wanted more. One day, Nyja’s son told her that she should sell her product. He even provided her with a whole business plan. Nyja launched RESPiRE by DESiGN as a birthday gift to herself, while living in the United Kingdom.

RESPiRE by DESiGN Mission Statement

“’Respire:’ to build hope and strength, despite difficulty. I understand that life is not all about looks, but let’s be honest – people feel better if they are comfortable in their own bodies. Something as simple as a good hair day and glowing skin can do wonders for self-esteem. ‘RESPiRE by DESiGN’ was birthed from a difficult situation, and evolved beyond being just a business. For founder Nyja, ‘RESPiRE by DESiGN’ is personal. The lowercase ‘i’ stands for inner beauty, insight, inspiration, and intention. ”

Questions for RESPiRE by DESiGN by 360 Magazine:

How did your diagnosis affect your outlook on life?

When I was diagnosed, I felt vindicated. I had been seeing doctors and specialists for nine years, only for them to insinuate that I was a hypochondriac. While I was elated to have a diagnosis, my new reality hit me hard.  I would no longer be able to bear children. My hope for a little Nyja was not going to happen. The pain made me go into research mode. I wanted to identify ways to help myself, what caused fibroids, and how to prevent this from happening to others. I couldn’t change the damage that was done, but I can prevent further by using healthier products. When I could not find healthier products, I decided to make them.

What type of ingredients do you use in your body butter?

Each of my products are formulated with ingredients that are cold pressed, vegan-friendly, and do not contain preservatives, chemicals, and dyes. Each product is safe if ingested, making it safe for our skin and hair to absorb.

The oils I use are: Sweet Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Castor Oil, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Argon, Vitamin E and Neem Oil

For scents I use the following essential oils: Lavender, Tangerine, Vanilla, Ylang Ylang, and Peppermint

The butters I use are: Mango Butter & Cocoa Butter.

Whether you choose RbD products or not, please keep in mind that your skin is the largest organ on your body. Everything you put on your body will eventually be absorbed into your body.

What is the difference between a body butter and lotion?

To be honest, not much. Several soap recipes use similar ingredients. I just haven’t had a large enough demand from my customers to add soaps to my product line. However, my plan is to add hand-crafted soaps to my line in 2022.

The key difference between a lotion and a butter is in their ingredients. Body butter contains shea butter, and various oils like coconut, or jojoba. Body lotion is often a combination of water and oils. Body butter is often thicker, heavier, and has an oilier finish to it. However, RbD products are uniquely formulated to absorb quickly into the skin and hair to prevent leaving an oily finish.

In what ways does hair butter help hair?

RbD’s ReNew Hair Butter is naturally formulated using oils similar to those produced by our body. This makes it easier for these oils to penetrate quickly to soften hair, minimize tangles, smooth hair follicles, provides moisture, prevent split ends and breakage, improve retention, nourish the scalp, provide protection from sun damage, and promote hair growth.

Would you recommend your hair butter for all types of hair?

Yes, I would recommend ReNew for all hair types. However, I would suggest the product be used as described below:

For thin or straight hair– Use ReNew Hair Butter as a hair mask. Let the mask remain on your hair for 10-20 minutes. Wash your hair as normal with lukewarm water.

For thick, coiled, kinky, or curly hair– Use ReNew Hair Butter when pre-shampooing. Apply a generous amount to your hair, then add your conditioner of choice. If you are going to use a plastic cap, allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes. If you are using a steamer, allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. Then, rinse out the conditioner using lukewarm water.

Does RESPiRE by DESiGN have any new products coming out in 2021?

Yes, I have two products coming out in 2021–ReStore Hair Oil and Bath Bombs.

ReStore Hair Oil was formulated for individuals who have a temperamental scalp. The key ingredient is Neem Oil. Research has shown that Neem Oil has the following benefits: promotes hair growth, prevents boldness, conditions hair, helps with dandruff and itching, treats head lice, treats scalp infections, and prevents premature graying.

If used as a body oil ReStore will: moisturize, sooth inflamed and itchy skin, repel insects, treat acne and pimples, treat hyperpigmentation, treat scars and blackheads, act as a layer of protection against environmental damage.
