Esteemed hip-hop artist Vince Staples today announced the release of his self-titled LP – out Friday, July 9 via Blacksmith Recordings/Motown Records. His first full-length release since 2018’s critically acclaimed FM!, the 10-track LP delves not only into Staples’ upbringing in Long Beach, but his psyche as he learns to cope with his yesterdays and strides toward new tomorrows, picking others up along the way.

In conjunction with the announcement, Staples released the much-anticipated first single off the LP, Law of Averages”, alongside the official music video for the track, directed by Kid. Studio. Set against a montage of voyeuristic moments in Long Beach, CA, the cinematic visual features imagery that embodies black joy and highlights the beauty within the fringes.

Of the new Kenny Beats-produced LP, Staples says, “It really gives much more information about me that wasn’t out there before. That’s why I went with that title. I feel like I’ve been trying to tell the same story. As you go on in life, your point of view changes. This is another take on myself that I might not have had before.”

The celebrated rapper’s latest body of work is also just the beginning of his busy 2021. Staples is currently working on a number of creative projects with additional details to be announced throughout the year.

“I’m a mind more than I am an entertainer to a lot of people,” Staples says, adding, “I appreciate that my fanbase is willing to go on this ride with me. I’m ready to diversify what we’re doing and see how we affect the world.”

X AMBASSADORS × MY OWN MONSTER

X AMBASSADORS RELEASE VIDEO FOR “MY OWN MONSTER”

Sam Nelson Harris Dances With His Shadow in Darkly Cinematic Video

Multi-platinum-selling rock band X Ambassadors share the video for their latest single My Own Monster” today, June 17, 2021. Directed by longtime collaborator Daniel Iglesias Jr., and made in collaboration with Mathematic — the Paris VFX house known for their work on Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” — the video for “My Own Monster” accentuates the song’s noir-pop element by placing Harris in a partially animated alternate universe.

In tribute to the scene from Anchors Aweigh in which Gene Kelly dances alongside Jerry Mouse from “Tom and Jerry,” the black-and-white visual finds Harris performing a choreographed routine with his own shadow, injecting a bit of classic-cartoon humor into the track’s chilling mystique. Harris worked with choreographer Genna Moroni training for a month before shooting the video.

Watch the video HERE.

“The idea for this video came to me in a dream a couple years ago and now it’s come to life,” says lead singer Sam Nelson Harris. “The video feels playful and dangerous and kind of unhinged all at once, which is how I felt while making this record and video.”

Released via KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records, “My Own Monster” is a moody psychodrama in the form of a groove-heavy pop song that examines themes of alienation, emotional risk and the desire to break free from pain. It was inspired by the pressure lead singer Sam Harris feels every day to keep things in his life together professionally, personally, mentally and emotionally. It is a song about someone who has an evil voice inside their head and embracing it rather than running from it.

“My Own Monster” is the first song to be released from the band’s highly awaited third album, The Beautiful Liar, due out later this year and marks the start of a compelling new lyrical direction for X Ambassadors. Earlier this week the band announced The Beautiful Liar Tour with dates in North America and Europe starting this fall. Tickets are on sale tomorrow, June 18th, at 10am local time at https://www.xambassadors.com/tour.

ABOUT X AMBASSADORS
X Ambassadors made their full-length debut with VHS, a 2015 release that saw the band transition from Ithaca alt-rockers and Brooklyn-indie-scene outsiders to Billboard stalwarts. Now certified platinum, VHS provided an intimate look at Sam Nelson Harris and his brother Casey Harris’s youth, delivering the genre-defying hits “Unsteady” and “Renegades” and leading to a three-year global touring odyssey as well as a string of high-profile festival performances. VHS was followed by X Ambassadors’ 2019 sophomore album ORION, which they supported with an extensive headline tour of the U.S.  A project inspired by ’60s and ’70s soul and R&B, the band’s Belong EP arrived in March 2020. Their hyper-creative multi-part project (Eg),  three-song effort released in early 2021, found the band collaborating with a series of similarly forward-thinking artists, including Earl St. Clair, Terrell Hines, and Jensen McRae.

Jack Antonoff illustration by Samantha Miduri for use by 360 Magazine

PRODUCER JACK ANTONOFF IS EVERYWHERE

By: Andrew Shibuya

Working quietly beside some of today’s most famous and talented musicians is producer Jack Antonoff. Though one likely knows the various critically acclaimed albums he has co-produced over the past five years with artists such as Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Lorde, he seems to have worked primarily in the shadows of these singer-songwriters.

Known for his sleek and polished pop, his signature 80s-style synths, and ornate instrumentation, Antonoff began his rise to prominence first as a member of the now defunct group fun., and later as one of the producers on Swift’s 1989 and Reputation. And while he is far from unknown by any means, it is only this past spring that Antonoff’s influence has seemed to be inescapable.

In the past six months alone, Antonoff has been credited as co-producer on some of the most celebrated and eagerly anticipated releases of the year, including Del Rey’s Chemtrails Over the Country Club, St. Vincent’s Daddy’s Home, Clairo’s forthcoming Sling, Lorde’s forthcoming LP, as well as on Swift’s last two LP’s, evermore and folklore. Given the prominence of the artists he works with, and the sheer amount of Antonoff’s work that is being released at present, one can only help but wonder if there are any implications to Antonoff’s extensive list of collaborators and his unmistakable influence over much of the contemporary pop scene.

This past week alone saw the release of both Lorde’s and Clairo’s first singles (“Solar Power” and “Blouse”, respectively) from their forthcoming records, with the two singer-songwriters even lending their vocals to each other’s tracks. And while the producer himself once stated that each record he produces has its own “sound world”, many fans have taken to social media to complain about what they deem to be Antonoff’s “copy-pasting” from record to record. Critics have pointed out some of the valid similitudes among some of Antonoff’s most recent works.

For example, many critics point to similarities between the key, tempo, and vocals of the refrain of St. Vincent’s track “… At the Holiday Party” from her latest work “Daddy’s Home” and the chorus of Lorde’s recent single “Solar Power”. Side by side, the sonic resemblance between the two is somewhat uncanny. Fans have even gone as far as to create mashups of the two songs, alongside pleas for Antonoff to take a break from working with so many artists at once.

Another instance of Antonoff’s so-called “copy-pasting” that fans have taken grief with is the use of identical instrumentation from tracks from Del Rey’s two most recent albums, both co-produced by Antonoff. The distinctive jingle bells of 2019’s “How to Disappear” are used almost identically as in the chorus of 2021’s “Wild at Heart”. Many fans were quick to express their dismay given the fact that several tracks from Chemtrails Over the Country Club were recorded during the sessions for Norman Fucking Rockwell!  and “Wild at Heart.” For some fans, these tracks seemed to merely be leftovers from the first LP, leaving many lamenting that Antonoff must be too busy to be wholly novel with each work.

This is not to say, however, that Antonoff’s production has by any means become stale, nor that the producer is lacking versatility. Contrarily, his range is objectively remarkable. Take, for instance, his work with indie rock artist Annie Clark, who writes and performs as St. Vincent. From the glam rock and electro-pop sound of her 2017 LP MASSEDUCTION to the psychedelic and 70s-inspired Daddy’s Home alone, Antonoff, co-producing with Clark, proves himself to be adroit across a multitude of instruments and production styles.

And still, many fans of St. Vincent’s remarkable career over the past decade and a half consider Clark’s last two albums, both co-produced alongside Antonoff, to be among her worst. Critics often cite the sleek and polished production that Antonoff favors as the problem. This, of course, begs the question: are these artists responsible for the similarities in their work with their peers’, or could Antonoff be to blame?

Based on what the artists he works with have to say, the former might seem to be the answer. Swift, following the release of her 2020 LP folklore, wrote in a tweet about Antonoff: “Talking to Jack about life is one of my all time favorite hobbies. He’s always curious, always wondering how to keep learning and growing. He’s the best.” Del Rey, Lorde, and Clark have all likewise echoed this sentiment, similarly praising Antonoff’s willingness to listen and move in any direction musically.

So what is it about Antonoff that makes him so compelling to artists and somewhat divisive amongst fans? With every album and single that he produces comes an accompanying Instagram post alongside various platitudes praising the new work and artist. Just below rests humorous, and somewhat exasperated, comments from fans wondering when the producer has time to sleep.

With so many of his collaborators being women, many interviewers and fans have been curious as to why Antonoff tends to gravitate toward female singer-songwriters. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Antonoff responded to the question regarding the majority of his production being for female artists, stating, “It’s never come up in my head outside of being interviewed.”

Fans, however, are constantly intrigued by Antonoff’s prodigious discography, especially the predominance of women singer-songwriters with whom he collaborates. Some in this online discourse criticize Antonoff’s dominance in pop production, given that in a recent report conducted by USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, just 2.6 percent of all producers are women. These critics argue that these famous and talented artists should seek out women producers, as opposed to simply continuing to work with Antonoff.

Still, Antonoff remains one of the most in-demand producers who is sought out by some of the biggest names in music, most notably by prominent and talented female singer-songwriters. Is it because he’s simply the most talented? Or the most well-known? And, how much Antonoff is too much Antonoff? Though the answer to these questions may be unclear, his influence is undeniable–and now, almost inescapable. Behind the scenes of many of the greatest pop releases of 2021, and indeed the latter half of the past decade, was Antonoff working tirelessly.

Deadmau5 Partners with Extreme Music and UTA to Launch a Dance Music Label

Deadmau5 is a renowned Canadian disk jockey, musician, and producer whose official name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman. He is also known for his music label mau5trap, which he started in 2007. As part of the plan to expand his music empire, Deadmau5 has partnered with UTA and established Extreme Music to launch beathau5, a new music label focusing on producing dance music. The main target of the content is meant for advertisements, film, and TV industry.

In the past, Deadmau5 has partnered with multiple companies and collaborated with different artists, including Rob Swire and Sofia Toufa. His previous works have earned him more than five Grammy Award nominations and numerous deals. For instance, he teamed up with Xbox to play PUBG.

He also worked with Microgaming, a software provider, to produce a branded video slot currently available in various top online casino sites in South Africa such as Casino Lab. The UTA negotiated deal is meant to enable Deadmau5 to reach a wider audience while providing his fans with exclusive music content.

The core duty of the Sony Music library division, Extreme Music, is to help in the production and distribution of the libraries that the Beathau5 label will be producing during the partnership. Currently, Extreme Music is working with Junkie XL, among other artists aiding in different distribution levels.

In Spring, Beathau5 will put out five albums that Deadmau5 will personally work on compiling the entire music library of the project. The albums will contain music from numerous Mau5trap artists, both established and new. In addition, each library will be certified for screens, and according to Deadmau5, TV and film industry will finally have unlimited access to unique electronic music sounds for any project they may have. This news comes amid news of new music releases from numerous other stars.

Every album release will be accompanied by NTFs from an artist whom the parties are yet to mention. A statement released by Russell Emanuel, the CEO of Extreme Music, shows he is enthusiastic about the project. He also confirmed that Extreme Music company has worked with multiple electronic music artists, but they have never gone further to create a label which is a huge accomplishment.

Additionally, the CEO mentioned that they are ready to find the right ears for the upcoming Beathau5 projects. On the other hand, Zimmerman confirmed that partnering with Extreme Music is the right move since it is the company that will play a major role in finding the right audience and market for the upcoming project. Recently, Deadmau5 and his label mau5trap have scored incredible deals, with artists such as Maison Ware scoring a deal with Spree, an on-screen production by Hulu.

Also, at the beginning of 2020, Zimmerman launched hau5trap. The record label is meant to produce house music exclusively to millions of fans across the globe. That was followed by a tech company called PIXELYNX which Zimmerman established alongside Richie Hawtin, an electronic music pioneer who goes by the stage name Plastikman.

These achievements show Joel Thomas Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5, will steer the new Beathau5 label in the right direction. Besides UTA, Deadmau5’s record label mau5trap is represented by Seven20 Entertainment, an international entertainment in Tech, Music, and Gaming, as well as LaPolt Law, P.C. However, Deadmau5 is given the rights to produce the creative content, whereas the other companies handle distribution.
