BIG30 – KING OF KILLBRANCH

BIG30 SHARES EXPLOSIVE DEBUT PROJECT: KING OF KILLBRANCH

Watch the video for “Free Shiest Life” HERE

September 2, 2021 – Today, Memphis rapper BIG30 releases King of Killbranch, his explosive debut project filled with the menacing gunplay, percussive flows, and vivid recollections of life on his block that’ve cemented his status as one of rap’s fastest rising stars. Featuring guest spots from Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, Future, Lil Durk, Pooh Shiesty, Offset, and more, the project arrives alongside the official video for “Free Shiesty,” which pays tribute to 30’s friend and frequent collaborator.

King of Killbranch is Big30’s most ambitious effort to date, including stellar guest spots as well as 30’s blend of technical skill and steely intensity. On “Fuck the Opps,” 30 lets loose cutthroat bars that evoke images of life in a danger zone he’s become all too comfortable inhabiting. “Til them bitches extinct/See the nigga with me shoot his gun before he thinks,” 30 raps over the low-key beat.

30’s new project was preceded by “Back Seat of the Rolls Truck,” an appropriately relentless opener for an effort characterized by its ferociousness. On the track, 30 lets’s loose some ruthless bars: “He gotta go, that’s on my nigga/One apps so little when he dies he gets smoked out a Swisha.”

King of Killbranch is just the latest step in BIG30’s journey to rap dominance, one that began when he wrote his first songs with Pooh Shiesty just a few years ago. He kicked off 2021 with a celebrated feature on Pooh Shiesty’s RIAA Gold-certified “Neighbors,” which peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100. From there, he completed a trap artist rite of passage by appearing on Gucci Mane’s “Shit Crazy,” garnering the attention of ComplexVulture, and other tastemaking outlets in the process. With several standout singles and his debut project at his back, BIG30 is set to make the most of his moment, which is starting to look like it will last a very long time.

THE MOAD PRESENTS THREE NEW EXHIBITION

MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN AT MDC PRESENTS

THREE NEW EXHIBITIONS FOR FALL 2021

Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at Miami Dade College (MDC) presents three one-person exhibitions for the Fall 2021 season. Exhibitions by the Icelandic artist Hreinn Fridfinnsson, Cuban American Jorge Pardo, and Miami-based Venezuelan American Loriel Beltrán offer viewers comprehensive looks at the practices of three of the most compelling artists—both local and international—working today. The exhibitions will be on view from Nov. 6, 2021, through May 1, 2022.

Hreinn Fridfinnsson: For the Time Being, the first American museum exhibition of the influential Icelandic artist spans six decades and highlights his use of minimal gestures to transform everyday materials into poetic, allusive, and revelatory works of art. Born and raised in Iceland, Fridfinnsson moved to Amsterdam in 1971 and began exhibiting his work in museums and galleries across Europe. His early works align with contemporaneous cutting-edge art movements, such as land art and photo conceptualism, but still suggest the distinctively romantic, lyrical, and wry sensibility that continues to define his practice.

A kind of poetic restraint characterizes many other Fridfinnsson works, which take ordinary materials and objects as their starting point. With a light touch, the artist minimally intervenes to alchemically transmute pedestrian things into allusive and enigmatic artworks—what we might call, in Duchampian terms, “slightly assisted readymades.” Sometimes these works carry a tacit mystical or spiritual charge, such as Sanctuary, 1992–2010, a regular cardboard carton with a sheet of fluorescent paper placed inside. Upended and mounted on the wall, the splayed box makes a cruciform shape and unearthly light seems to emanate from within.

Fridfinnsson’s art is often dependent on vagaries of atmosphere and perception for its effect. Most of his major exhibitions, including this one at MOAD, gather works from across the multiple decades of his career, without regard for chronology or ideas of artistic development. For the Time Being marks a provisional summation of the artist’s achievement, less a traditional retrospective than an assembly of instantiations of his unique sensibility.

Jorge Pardo: Mongrel, a site-specific installation, features a new series of quasi-abstract drawings along with modernist chairs, custom-fabricated chandeliers, and a carpet designed by the artist in MOAD’s expansive Skylight Gallery. The immersive exhibition poetically conjures the artist’s own history and biography, including his childhood memories as a Cuban refugee, processed with his family at MDC’s Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, which now houses the museum.

An untitled series of 25 new drawings created expressly for this exhibition meld a wide variety of images into arresting abstractions of pulsing color and form, while still occasionally revealing their representational sources. The artist emigrated to the United States as a child, passing through the Freedom Tower, which then served as a processing center for Cuban refugees. His memories of the welcoming architectural landmark intertwine with those of displacement, trauma, and loss caused in part by the Cuban regime’s confiscation of the emigrants’ family photographs and documents. Pardo’s drawings use family photos—his own and others’—as their starting point, along with historic photos of the Freedom Tower. He combines these with a vast array of other images, including many artworks crucial to his development as an artist and others meant to evoke the cultural milieu of his formative years.

The artist manipulates his source materials on the computer, resizing, superimposing, colorizing, and otherwise transforming images that recall personal and cultural memories into dazzlingly hued, intricately textured near-abstractions. Pardo translates these into vector graphics, which are then printed on cotton Guarro paper and brilliantly tinted by hand with colored pencils. Pardo has compared the montage and assimilation of source images into the provisionally unified whole of his drawings to the process of assimilation undergone by any immigrant to a new land, including himself. He views his reconstruction of an image from recognizable fragments into a new, often unfamiliar, mixed configuration as analogous to his own hybrid or “mongrel” condition, existing between cultural, ethnic, or racial identities.

Loriel Beltrán: Constructed Color presents recent works by the artist, innovative abstract paintings of dazzling opticality and metaphorical density made by affixing slabs of layered pigment, sliced from blocks hardened in boxlike molds, to panels. Beltrán’s panels appear as stacked structures, assemblages, or objects. But the optical mixing of the colors perceived by viewers also makes the paintings seem somewhat intangible. This contradiction between object and opticality constitutes only one of the works’ paradoxes. Beltrán uses such contradictions to create a tension-filled space within which he explores possible modes for contemporary painting.

Beltrán’s exhibition inaugurates MOAD Projects, a new series of exhibitions that features work by Miami-based artists, including distinguished MDC and New World School of the Arts alumni and faculty. MOAD Projects provides a platform for local artists to realize new projects or exhibit recent bodies of work, as well as for investigations of understudied historical developments in Miami’s cultural past. MOAD Projects expands upon the swing/SPACE/Miami alumni exhibition series that began in 2013.

“We are thrilled to present solo shows by three fascinating artists this fall,” says Rina Carvajal, MOAD’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, who organized all three projects. “Introducing Hreinn Fridfinnsson’s intelligent and poetic work to America is a great honor. And we are proud to host Jorge Pardo’s engrossing semi-autobiographical installation, which engages his own artistic development in tandem with the history of exile, of Miami, and of the Freedom Tower itself. These two projects, combined with the rigorous and brilliant paintings of Loriel Beltrán, produced here in Miami by an alumnus of the New World School of the Arts, give our audiences a view of the vast range of contemporary art’s possibilities.”

Hreinn Fridfinnsson: For the Time Being is curated by Rina Carvajal, MOAD’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, with the assistance of Isabela Villanueva, Consulting Assistant Curator. Jorge Pardo: Mongrel and Loriel Beltran: Constructed Color are curated by Rina Carvajal. All three exhibitions are made possible by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. For their generous assistance in realizing the exhibition of Hreinn Fridfinnsson, MOAD wishes to thank Hrafnhildur Helgadóttir; Claes Nordenhake and Nadia Heinsohn of Galerie Nordenhake; Börkur Arnarson and Bryndís Erla Hjálmarsdóttir of i8 Gallery; and Elba Benítez and Pamela Cañizo of Galería Elba Benitez. For invaluable assistance in his research, Jorge Pardo wishes to thank the Cuban Heritage Collection and the Cuban Refugee Center Records, both at the University of Miami Libraries, Coral Gables; the Research Center at HistoryMiami Museum; and the Florida International University dPanther Digital Repository.

WILLIAM SHATNER- ALBUM BILL

WILLIAM SHATNER ANNOUNCES NEW SPOKEN WORD ALBUM BILL SET FOR RELEASE ON SEPTEMBER 24TH
RELEASES TWO SINGLES “CLOUDS OF GUILT” FEAT. JOE JONAS AND “SO FAR FROM THE MOON” FEAT. BRAD PAISLEY TODAY

The award-winning actor, director, producer, writer, and chart-topping recording artist William Shatner announces his forthcoming new album, BILL, set for release on September 24th via Joe Jonas’ new label Let’s Get It! Records/Republic Records. To celebrate the announcement, William Shatner teams up with Joe Jonas and Brad Paisley to release the first two singles from the album, “Clouds of Guilt” feat. Joe Jonas and “So Far From the Moon” feat. Brad Paisley, out now.

Through spoken word and genre-bending music, the songs on BILL chronicle significant autobiographical moments in William Shatner’s life and the ideas, challenges, and questions he’s confronted along the way. The tracks were co-written and produced by Grammy Award-winner Dan Miller [They Might Be Giants], while the lyrics were a collaboration between Shatner and his friend and writer Robert Sharenow. In addition to Joe Jonas and Brad Paisley, BILL features guitarist Joe Walsh [James Gang, Eagles, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band], pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph [Robert Randolph and the Family Band], musician John Lurie, saxophonist Dave Koz, and more. See the full tracklist below.

On creating the album remotely during the pandemic, William Shatner says, “Through a series of phone calls, texts, and emails, music and words flew back and forth across the country. The [Covid-19] crisis created an urgency and quickly unleashed a candor between us that allowed us to peel back layers that sat on the surface of a subject to reveal the depth of truth buried underneath. What better time to contemplate life’s biggest questions than during a global pandemic? Some songs touched on painful or beautiful moments, while others turned into elliptical philosophical explorations about the very nature of existence and death.”

He continues, “BILL blends long-form autobiographical poetry and prose, music, spoken word performance art, and philosophical exploration. Toggling between passion and despair, reflection and yearning, this collection explores my life journey during a pivotal and chilling moment of history.”

In “Clouds of Guilt,” William Shatner explores the strangely powerful role guilt has played throughout his life, with equal measures of wit, irony, and self-awareness.

Joe Jonas states, “I’ve been a fan of Bill’s for as long as I can remember. He’s iconic. To not only be featured on one of his songs that mean so much to him but to also get to be a label partner on the entire project, it’s an honor.”

While on “So Far From the Moon,” William Shatner revisits a pivotal moment in his life after the cancelation of Star Trek and his divorce, when he was doing dinner theater and living out of the back of his pickup truck. One the night of July 20th, 1969, as he lay out in a sleeping bag in the back of the truck, staring at the sky, he listened to the live broadcast of the moon landing. Despite being at a low point in his career, Shatner found inspiration and a connection to the astronauts in the sky above, who he had met years before while they were training for their mission.

Brad Paisley comments, “It’s so interesting to hear what effect the moon landing had on Bill, because every generation of astronauts since those days credit him with inspiration. I’m so proud to be on this track.”

The other songs on BILL dive into various stories and topics, including the nature of relationships, the struggle with fame and identity, the meaning of life, and more. Like epic song cycles of the past from Homer to Kendrick Lamar, William Shatner’s journey is both extremely personal and universal, extraordinary and relatable. His unique insights and delivery, beloved by millions worldwide, give voice to the joys and struggles we all face.

Stay tuned for more music to come from William Shatner soon!

Wet Leg-Chaise Longue

New UK band WET LEG is receiving a *huge* response to their debut single “  from the New York TimesNPR, etc., and is currently enjoying an enormous surge in radio play here in their native UK, Europe, and down under! If you haven’t heard it yet, here it is: “Chaise Longue”.  It is the sneakiest, most fun-loving, earworm of the summer. The song is being added at radio stations all around the country.

The band –  Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers – come from the Isle Of Wight, a sparsely populated island off the south coast of England accessible only by boat. They are old friends who share a penchant for French disco, effervescent imaginations, and a shared love of The Ronettes and Jane Birkin, through to Ty Segall and Bjork. Their recent UK live debut shows went with a huge bang and we’re hoping to have some information on their first US shows VERY SOON INDEED!

“They’re one of those new bands whose sound and aesthetic seem to have arrived fully formed, promising exciting if totally unpredictable things to come.” – New York Times

“Immensely charming…The end result lands somewhere between Dry Cleaning’s wry, sardonic post-punk and Sports Team’s Pavement-obsessed alt-rock crowd-pleasers — though you can certainly hear stated influences such as the Ronettes, Jane Birkin, Ty Segall, and Björk in there too if you squint” – Stereogum

“The debut single from U.K. rock duo Wet Leg is a doozy…the ear-grabbing track is an undeniable introduction to Wet Leg.” – Paste

“by the time they double down on the earworm hook “on the chaise longue all day long,” you feel about ready to collapse onto titular seat and unload all your stresses.” – Beats Per Minute

“a real corker…There’s a coy wit here and, when the guitars kick in, the song recalls the heyday of Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads and The Rakes. “Chaise Lounge” is even better when watched with its video that features excellent dancing from Chambers, as well as some high kicks.” Brooklyn Vegan

“Fueled by chugging drums and a boisterous guitar riff, the tongue-in-cheek track is whimsical and blithe, channeling the unfettered radiance of an island’s sun. It just might be your poolside song of the summer.” – Consequence Of Sound

Financial Future

Securing Your Financial Future

Mark Williams, CEO Brokers International

When it comes to securing your financial future, the best time to start planning is today. There are a lot of tools and products available to help put a plan together, but they all have one thing in common: the earlier you take advantage of them, the better off you’ll be.

Studies have shown that younger individuals, particularly millennials, tend to prefer savings over retirement accounts. Whether that’s because they lived through the Great Recession and saw what happened to older generations whose retirement strategies were rooted in the stock market, a lack of financial literacy, or something else altogether, the fact remains that younger generations have a more conservative mindset regarding financial planning and investing.

Many people put off retirement planning until retirement itself moves more into focus. But to maximize the impact of your efforts to plan for a secure financial future, start as early as you can. Here’s where you should start.

Workplace 401(k)s

For many people in the workforce, a 401(k) is offered through their employer. Saving money for the future in a tax-advantaged vehicle is a wise move, but for those whose companies offer a 401(k) match, it’s a no-brainer to maximize that source of free money. Due to the power of compound interest, even a small regular contribution makes a major difference over time.

Consider this example. If you invest $50 a month into a 401(k), at an average 7% annual rate of return, that investment adds up. After 15 years, you’ll have invested $9,000, but it will be worth over $15,000. That same $50 a month after 30 years will amount to $18,000 out of your pocket, but it will have grown to nearly $57,000. And if you invest just $50 a month for 45 years, that $27,000 investment will be worth just under $171,500. (You may not get 7% every year, but as an illustration, the value is clear.)

Annuities

Planning for your financial future can be difficult when you may not even have a view of that horizon. You don’t know what your life will look like, what your financial needs will be, and what resources will be available to you once you are no longer working.

Annuities provide a great response to the uncertainty of long-range financial planning. It’s the only financial product available that guarantees an income stream for life — once you turn on that income stream, it’s fixed. Fluctuations in interest rates or the marketplace won’t affect it. An annuity will provide you with a paycheck every single month until the day you die — and some products even allow you to extend that benefit to your spouse or children.

Life Insurance

This is the big one, but many people overlook life insurance because they won’t be able to take advantage of it themselves. But ask yourself, at any stage of life, if you don’t make it home one day, who relies on you to provide financially? More than anything, insurance is a form of safety and protection, for you and for those you love. It’s critically important for someone who is married with children to have life insurance in case of tragedy, to be able to help cover debts, provide a future source of income and even allow space for grief without financial anxiety.

But even for single young professionals, just starting off their careers, life insurance should be a primary consideration in financial planning.

Consider a young, single, 23-year-old individual who may not have anyone who depends on their income. Why would that person want to purchase a life insurance policy in that situation? In part, because they don’t know what their situation will be like in 1, 5 or 10 years, and a 20- or 30-year term life insurance policy will provide financial safeguards for some of the possibilities that may arise. Additionally, there’s a popular saying in the insurance industry: money pays for life insurance, but health buys it. When you are young and healthy, you’ll never be able to get a life insurance policy as cheaply as you can at that point.

Just as you never know if or when your circumstances may change and you’ll find yourself wanting a life insurance policy to protect the financial interests of someone you married five years after initially deciding not to purchase a policy, you may also receive a diagnosis in that same five-year period that makes life insurance impossible (or prohibitively out of reach).

If you buy life insurance when you’re young and healthy, you can take advantage of the best rates possible and provide a blanket of financial security for your loved ones.

Plan Ahead

Financial planning isn’t a lot of fun for most people, but it is necessary. Whether you are aiming for a specific short- to a mid-range financial goal or turning your eye toward your eventual retirement, it pays to start thinking about securing your financial future as early as possible. The cost of doing so when you are young is comparatively lower than if you wait 10, 20, or 30 years to make some of the same decisions.

If you’re young, take advantage of your long time horizon and plan accordingly. If you’re older and already feeling close to retirement, you may not have taken advantage of the power of compound interest but it’s still not too late to reallocate some of your assets and shore up your financial situation as much as possible.

For anyone, I would strongly recommend seeking out the advice and experience of a financial professional — they will understand all of your available options and know best how to construct a strategic plan to help you reach your goals.

The MAACM

Designed to Inspire: The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement opens September 7, 2021

The world’s first museum dedicated to the American Arts and Crafts movement showcases over 800 works of art from an era valuing craftsmanship, simplicity, and honesty

The highly-anticipated Museum of the American  Arts and Crafts Movement in St. Petersburg, Florida, will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. Founded and funded by local businessman, philanthropist, and collector Rudy Ciccarello, the museum is the first in the world dedicated to the movement.

The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement (MAACM) will showcase remarkable examples of fine and decorative art from this important movement, which swept the country between about 1890 and 1930. A reaction against the mass production of the Industrial Revolution, the movement promoted simple and functional designs, handcrafted with quality materials.

“This museum will be the epicenter for the study of the American Arts and Crafts movement,” said Ciccarello. “Our mission is to preserve and share these beautiful works of art with the public and to teach future generations to appreciate hand-craftsmanship and honest design.”

MAACM honors the principles that guided the movement with its finely crafted 137,000-square-foot building, which is a work of art itself. Designed by award-winning Tampa-based architect Alberto Alfonso in close collaboration with Ciccarello, the five-story museum features incredible architectural elements such as a grand atrium, skylights, and a dramatic spiral staircase, with hand-crafted Venetian plaster, wood, metal, and stone finishes. The expansive museum includes more than 40,000-square-feet of gallery space, as well as an outdoor garden with period tiles and fountains. In addition to galleries, MAACM has an education studio, graphic studio, retail store, research library, theater, event space, café, and destination restaurant.

Located in St. Petersburg’s bustling downtown waterfront arts district, MAACM joins the thriving local art and culture community.

“The Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement is a welcomed addition to Downtown St. Pete’s continuously growing art scene,” states Steve Hayes, president, and CEO of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.

Works of Art and Programs

Curated from the museum’s own collection and the holdings of the Two Red Roses Foundation (TRRF), MAACM features a vast selection of art, including some of the rarest objects from the movement. Personally collected by Ciccarello over more than three decades, the TRRF’s holdings, exceeding 2,000 objects, are considered the most important private collection of the American Arts and Crafts movement in the world. The most noteworthy artists, craftsmen, and companies are represented by works including furniture, pottery, tiles, metalwork, lighting, leaded glass, woodblock prints, paintings, and photographs. MAACM’s permanent collection galleries and three temporary exhibition spaces will display thoughtful works created by notable movement trailblazers such as Gustav Stickley, Charles Rohlfs, the Byrdcliffe Colony, the Roycrofters, Tiffany Studios, Dirk van Erp, Grueby Pottery, the Saturday Evening Girls, Rookwood Pottery, Newcomb Pottery, Frederick Hurten Rhead, Adelaide Alsop Robineau, and Arthur Wesley Dow. MAACM’s one-of-a-kind period installations include a complete wood-paneled room designed by the architectural firm of Greene and Greene, a custom tiled bathroom, and boathouse floor by Grueby Faience & Tile Company, and a 600-tile mural from Rookwood Pottery.

Temporary exhibitions will illuminate the movement and its lasting legacy. Love, Labor, and Art: The Roycroft Enterprise, showcases over 75 works made by the Roycroft community, including printed books, furniture, lighting, metalwork, and more. Lenses Embracing the Beautiful: Pictorial Photographs from the Two Red Roses Foundation, another opening exhibition, features more than 150 pictorial photographs and rare books from around the world. These carefully composed, camera-generated images mimic the appearance of paintings through hand-manipulated effects, reflecting the larger Arts and Crafts context.

Complementing the art on display, MAACM’s slate of programs is designed to engage the community with the collection. The Education Studio will host MAACM Family Days on the first Saturday of each month, which includes art-making, performances, and family-friendly guided tours of the collection. Monthly Third Thursday programming will feature themed activities, performances, art-making, and demonstrations. MAACM’s Sunday Film Series, on the last Sunday of each month, will feature a cinematic presentation inspired by the collection or exhibitions, followed by a docent-guided tour.
