VOLBEAT – THE METALLICA BLACKLIST

VOLBEAT SHARE “DON’T TREAD ON ME” FROM THE METALLICA BLACKLIST
CONFIRM 8-DATE HEADLINING TOUR

SHARE MUSIC VIDEO FOR “WAIT A MINUTE MY GIRL”

Volbeat, the multi-platinum Danish band, share their version of “Don’t Tread On Me” from the forthcoming album, The Metallica Blacklist. The album features an unprecedented 50+ artists contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite cut from Metallica’s self-titled fifth album, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Metallica (aka “The Black Album”). All profits from The Metallica Blacklist will be donated to charity, benefiting Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation and a charity of each contributing artists’ choice. For “Don’t Tread On Me,” Volbeat has chosen the Børne Cancer Fonden in Denmark.

Michael Poulsen says about the song, “We didn’t want to touch any of the big hits on that album, which is quite difficult because they’re all hits, somehow. We were trying to pick a song that you don’t hear as much from that album, and the most important thing was to pick a song where we could transform it into a Volbeat song. “Don’t Tread on Me” definitely had a swing that I could turn into a Volbeat swing, and it turned out really great.” Listen to “Don’t Tread on Me” hereThe Metallica Blacklist will be available on digital and streaming on September 10th, and on vinyl and CD October 1.

Recently Volbeat announced their first headlining shows in nearly two years. Puncutated by festival appearances at Rebel Rock (Orlando, FL: September 23, 2021) and Aftershock Festival (Sacramento, CA: October 8, 2021), the eight-date headline run will see the band coming to cities including Atlanta, San Diego, and Los Angeles (full dates below). Special guests The Hu, Twin Temple, and Municipal Waste will be joining them for select dates. Tickets for these dates will go on sale on Friday, July 23 at 10am local time here.

The band also shared their new music video for “Wait A Minute My Girl.” The music video was directed by Sean Donnelly, founder of AWESOME+modest, with collages by Mengqing Yuan, and animation by Steve Yeung. The band said of the video: “After seeing the work they did on The Lady and the Dale we knew that Sean and the team at Awesome+modest could do something trippy and creative for “Wait A Minute My Girl.” This video exceeded even our wildest expectations. It’s weird, fun and crazy – we absolutely love it.”

Along with “Wait A Minute My Girl” Volbeat also recently shared their song “Dagen Før.” The two tracks, the band’s first new music since 2019’s album Rewind, Replay, Rebound, were written and recorded while the world was in lockdown during the pandemic. Michael, Kaspar and Jon recorded their parts with long-time producer Jacob Hansen in Denmark, while Rob worked remotely from New York. Watch the lyric videos for each song here.

“Wait A Minute My Girl” features saxophone player Doug Corcoran and piano player Raynier Jacob Jacildo, who both perform with JD McPherson’s band and previously appeared with Volbeat on 2019’s “Die To Live (feat. Neil Fallon).” Singer Mia Maja, who has worked with the band since Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie, also appears on backing vocals. “Dagen Før” features guest vocals from Danish artist Stine Bramsen, who is known for her solo work as well as being a member of the band Alphabeat. The song, in the tradition of “The Garden’s Tale,” “Maybele I Hofteholder” and “For Evigt,” features both English and Danish lyrics, and marks the first commercially-released song that features Stine singing in her native Danish.

Since forming in 2001, Volbeat has gone from the clubs of Copenhagen to headlining stages around the world, including the famed Telia Parken stadium in Denmark (and becoming the only domestic artist to ever sell out the venue). Over the course of eight record-breaking albums the band has picked up number one songs (including eight #1s on the US Mainstream Rock chart and counting), multi-platinum certifications, awards and accolades (including a Grammy nomination) all over the planet. Their latest album, Rewind, Replay, Rebound, was released on August 2nd, 2019 and has spawned the hit singles “Last Day Under The Sun,” “Die To Live (feat. Neil Fallon)” and “Leviathan.” A live album featuring songs recorded during the subsequent world tour, Rewind, Replay, Rebound: Live in Deutschland, was released digitally on November 27th, 2020. A vinyl-only bonus track compilation, Hokus Bonus, was originally made available on limited-edition vinyl on RSD Black Friday 2020 and will be available in a new, limited European version and a North American standard version this Summer and are available for pre-order here.

WALLIE THE SENSEI – GOLDEN CHILD

COMPTON’S WALLIE THE SENSEI IS POETIC & RIVETING ON “GOLDEN CHILD” AND “BOMPTON 2 BALABASAS” ACOUSTIC STREET PERFORMANCE

Vulnerable, raw and untamed perfectly describe Compton native Wallie The Sensei, who’s latest musical effort “Golden Child” is out today. The 17-track mixtape which includes his breakout single “Scandalous” is heavily influenced by Wallie’s California roots and sonically redefines the legendary west coast sound. “Bompton 2 Balabasas” Acoustic Street performance here.

From start to finish, Wallie takes his listeners on a journey through his hometown of Compton where he speaks on his struggle to survive the cutthroat streets while always in pursuit of money, success and all the sweet things life has to offer. Make no mistake, Golden Child isn’t a story of tragedy, but a story of triumph, hustle and ultimately defeating a system designed for Wallie to fail.

Golden Child comes on the heels of Wallie’s “03 Flow” single which currently has over half a million views and over 1.5 million US streams. A true labor of love, 03 Flow pays homage to Watts native and fellow recording artist 03 Greedo who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. 03 Flow has quickly become a fan favorite, taking on a life on its own with radio support, consistent increase in streams and critical praises from music peers like PnB Rock, industry heavyweights, radio DJs & more. On the record Wallie passionately sings “niggas playing like they demons, they don’t really mean it, choppa spray like we cleanin, bodies dropping on that cement” Wallie’s passion is intently felt on the song and has become the heart of the Golden Child project.

Golden Child also includes Wallie’s team-up with Detroit powerhouse 42 Dugg on the enthralling remix of Wallie’s own hit single “Scandalous.” The two trade bars with ease and confidence, as Wallie offers up some of his most lucid lines, recounting the struggles of success and the haters who would come for his head. Additional stand out tracks include “Lamb,” the lush throwback finds Wallie effortlessly singing over a buttery beat, showcasing his one-of-a-kind flow and knack for incisive lyrics about his come-up. “B*tch, nobody had it in my fam, I put my foot down,” he sings. “Put my other foot down like I could drive this car, let the motherf***kin hood down.” In Lamb, Wallie walks recollects his life’s trajectory beginning with his time on the streets, his narratives are poetic and detailed, rivaling rap’s most vivid writers.

Since the release of Wallie the Sensei’s No Love EP at the beginning of 2020, he’s quickly become a West Coast artist to watch. Respect magazine praised the “Scandalous” video for showcasing Compton’s “camaraderie, hustle, and rawness,” while Rosecrans Ave highlighted Wallie’s storytelling abilities, saying he is “providing guidance to those who come after” with his pain-stricken tales. After the hit of the “Scandalous” remix, Wallie the Sensei’s proved that his skyrocketing success is no fluke. Golden Child is poised to reach even more open-minded listeners. It’s full of anthems for hustling Cali natives and anyone who craves a little bit of glow-up magic.

EBHONI – GOOD DICK & WEED

EBHONI REPS FOR ALL THE TORONTO BAD GYALS ON NEW PROJECT “GOOD DICK & WEED”

A refreshing departure from the current landscape of R&B, 21-year-old singer/songwriter Ebhoni keeps it realer than real on her latest mixtape “Good Dick & Weed.” The 10-track project includes a collaboration with Jamaican rap star Beam in addition to Ebhoni’s breakout single “Rep It” & her confident ode to women with options,  “Rotation,” produced by industry heavyweight FORTHENIGHT (Bad Bunny, Don Toliver). Born & raised in Toronto, Good Dick & Weed is heavily influenced by Ebhoni’s Caribbean upbringing and is full of bold & honest convictions, a fierce body of work that is sure to redefine what it means to be a woman fully in charge and uninhibited.

Good Dick & Weed in many ways channels a keen sense of the best parts of what some would define as nostalgia: the era of mixtapes and tumblr, telling a story through visceral imagery and honest anecdotes, the internet in its rawer early form. Good Dick & Weed paints snapshots of different cities in the same harshly ephemeral gleam, from Westwood to Wilshire, specific places made universal by the heartbreak and hopefulness within them.

On opening track “If You Know You Know”, Ebhoni speaks directly to a night where gunfire punctured six bullet holes in the backseat window of her family’s car, and they had to temporarily relocate to her grandmother’s house, where she openly wonders: what if she had been sitting in that backseat?  Putting up walls for her own self-protection, she’s only now beginning to draw from the power that comes from her own vulnerability. “I really have been through so much, and it’s important to show that to help others who might not have that platform.” Good Dick & Weed draws from this agency, a declaration of assured frankness that shows the choices you make don’t have to be perfect as long as you believe in them.

Good Dick & Weed is a product of nighttime, connecting the dots and piecing together information from strings of late-night texts, voice notes from the calls you choose not to pick up, as well as poignant diary vignettes curled up in the sink from the washroom of the Atlanta apartment she currently resides. where the low-key 21-year-old feels her most authentic self. It’s also a matter-of-fact acknowledgement of growing up on Weston Road in Toronto where her father sold drugs, waking up to ringing doorbells early in the morning, seeing notes left on her mother’s car and playing outside of housing complexes while her father was inside doing deals.

Praised for her powerhouse talent, Office Magazine predicts Ebhoni “is on a fast track to worldwide recognition.” Earlier this year, Ebhoni released her EP “X,” to critical reception from press and rare groove enthusiasts. In addition to Pitchfork praising Ebhoni for “reclaiming the Toronto R&B crown for women.” HotNewHipHop wrote, “Ebhoni has been one artist to keep an eye out for in the 6ix,” it’s no wonder FLAUNT crowned her “Our favorite new R&B artist.” Tracks like “Rotation” only bolster the rep she’s built as one of R&B’s most magnetic young stars, and with the release of Good Dick & Weed, Ebhoni’s growing fandom will surely only continue to expand.

Good Dick & Weed Track List:

  1. IYKYK
  2. Come Over (feat. Beam)
  3. Rep It
  4. Rotation
  5. Be A Man
  6. Westwood

What's Your Black? by Nyame Brown for use by 360 Magazine

Nyame Brown Featured at Oakland Museum of California

Nyame Brown Large-scale Blackboard Painting What’s Your Black? in Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism at the Oakland Museum of California

Exhibition Opening Saturday, August 7, 2021

Nyame Brown will be featured in Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism at the Oakland Museum of California, opening August 7, 2021 and on view through February 27, 2022. The exhibition explores Afrofuturism as a strategy that imagines the world through a Black cultural lens and strives for a more just present and future. Curated by OMCA Curator Rhonda Pagnozzi and Consulting Curator Essence Harden, the exhibition celebrates Black imagination and includes the work of over 50 artists—including Wangechi MutuDavid Huffman, and Chelle Barbour, among others—historians, musicians, and collaborators. The show highlights the key role that the fantasy and science fiction of Afrofuturism has, as a strategy for Black community building by envisioning the African Diaspora and Black culture as central in a technically advanced and culturally rich civilization.

Brown—an Afrofuturist installation artist working in the media of painting, drawing, cut paper, blackboards, augmented reality, gaming, and fashion—addresses the Black imagination as a site for new ways to perceive the Diaspora as trans-Atlantic, psychic, and imagined—not just through unity and similarity, but by looking at the dynamics of difference. What’s Your Black?, part of his larger series of blackboard paintings, is envisioned as a tool to combat racial oppression, using a cultural production of the Black community to offer a space to create a new Black mythology. Building narratives like scaffolding around art historical references, hip hop, and personal history, he draws on these precedents as a fluid source of reference, rather than a fixed and linear projection. Reimagining contemporary notions of Blackness in visual culture, he challenges traditional representation and subverts it for a richer surreal language found in folklore and African American hyperbole. His depictions provide different ways to access African American culture through an approach that seeks social transformation and community revolution.

About Nyame Brown

Nyame Oulynji Brown received his BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and MFA from Yale School of Art and Architecture. He has been the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award, and the Richard Dreihaus Foundation Individual Artist Award, as well as a site-specific public commission for the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, for which he executed a double portrait of Malcolm X and the artist Jack Whitten. His participation in Theaster Gates’ Black Artist Retreat in Chicago was followed by residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts (for work on his project The Mapping of Aaron, a model for radical Blackness), Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. Brown was honored with a solo exhibition at The Museum of the African Diaspora, and has held solo exhibitions across the U.S., notably at the Hearst Museum at St. Mary’s College (John Henry’s adventures in a Post Black world) and the West Virginia University Art Museum. He has actively participated in group exhibitions in a variety of spaces in California, Illinois, Michigan and New York, and his work has been curated for inclusion at the Museum of Harlem, NY, and the Prizm Art Fair at the Mana Contemporary in Miami. He also took part with Carrie Mae Weems in the symposium The Interrogation of Forms: The Changing Culture in America at The Armory in New York. Brown was selected as the 2020 Tosa Studio Award recipient and was awarded a studio at Minnesota Street Project through 2021.

ZION & LENNOX – EL SISTEMA

ZION & LENNOX CELEBRATE THEIR 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH NEW ALBUM “EL SISTEMA” FEATURING ICONIC COLLABORATIONS WITH MYKE TOWERS, RAUW ALEJANDRO, SECH, AND MORE

Legendary reggaetón duo Zion & Lennox released their fourth studio album called EL SISTEMA, while celebrating the 20th anniversary since they became a musical act.

EL SISTEMA consists of 13 songs and an introduction, including the previously released “No Me Llama” with Myke Towers (18 million views), “Te Mueves” featuring Natti Natasha, “Gota Gota” together with El Alfa (10 million views), and “Sistema” (15 million views).

The tracklist is as follows:

00- Intro: A quick compilation of 20 years of hits giving you the perfect introduction to what you can expect from the album. Some of the samples used include “Pierdo La Cabeza,” “Zun Da Da,” “Guayo,” “Fantasma,” “Yo Tengo Una Gata,” “Yo Voy,” and many more, setting the tone for a whole album full of new bangers like what we’re used to from Zion & Lennox.

01- Estrella: a reggaetón in the very recognizable Zion & Lennox sound that talks about a beautiful woman that looks like a star (estrella) and the length they’re willing to go to make her feel like the queen she is.

02- Entendemos: an exquisite collaboration with Panamanian sensation Sech that touches on relationships that might not seem perfect to the outside world, but in reality, the two parties get each other and have unbelievable chemistry and make it work despite what people might say.

03- Loco: We’ve all been there: we end a relationship but end up going “Loco” (crazy) because you’re still not over that person and keep reminding yourself all the ways you could’ve saved that relationship. That’s what “Loco” is all about paired with a slow reggaetón that makes it the perfect song to dedicate.

04- No Me Llama: Countless times we’ve heard the female side: a guy leads her on and ends up using her to get into bed. This time around, in “No Me Llama,” Zion & Lennox together with superstar Myke Towers flip the script and share their experience as the guys who end up being used by women.

05- Enchuletiao: This is the perfect hype-up song to get ready to go out and feel yourself! “Enchuletiao” is that song you dedicate to the haters who wanted to see you fail, but you pulled through and are living your best life against all odds with an unmatched swag.

06- Perla: It’s not all about perreo for Zion & Lennox, and with “Perla” they show their softer, more romantic side and showing their most vulnerable side in a beautiful downtempo reggaetón with tropical guitars intertwined in the beat.

07- Destino: On “Destino,” Zion & Lennox team up with another OG, De La Ghetto, for a track that recounts those times you’re in the club and send drinks to a woman that caught your attention although she’s doing her own thing, but that doesn’t stop you from creating a whole fantasy in your head.
08- Diosa: “Diosa” is the perfect song to describe a woman by calling her a goddess. Zion & Lennox’s unique style matches perfectly with Rauw Alejandro’s freshness creating an explosive collaboration that not only has a catchy rhythm, but also has very appealing lyrics.

09- Te Mueves: We all remember the viral “Te Mueves” challenge that took over social media last year. It was only fair that this hit by Zion & Lennox featuring one of the biggest female reggaetón stars, Natti Natasha, found its home as part of El Sistema.

10- Sistema: The track that gives name to this album, “Sistema” is a song that makes you want to dance no matter what with its infectious beat and lyrics that will make you want to create your own “Sistema” (system) for when you go out partying with your friends.

11- Cinturita: Time to get sexy with “Cinturita” featuring Lenny Tavárez and Darell, the perfect song to grind all the way while vibing to the lyrics that are a bit more provocative than what we’re used to hearing from Zion & Lennox.

12- Gota Gota: Versatility is the name of the game with “Gota Gota” featuring Dominican dembow sensation El Alfa. The song is composed of the highly danceable and popular elements of urban music which is infused with a strong Dominican dembow influence.

13- No Más: To round up this iconic new album by Zion & Lennox, we get the feel-good “No Más,” a track you can’t help but to move to, while repeating the super easy-to-sing chorus with its captivating melody.

Together with the album, Zion & Lennox also released the music video for their next single, “Estrella,” which features the pair having fun in a beautiful mansion in Santo Domingo complete with an infinity pool and waterfalls, surrounded by scantily-clad women dancing along to the song, although none of them are the real “estrella” (star), who at first seems unattainable, but as the video progresses, she makes her way into the party.

With over 200 hits under their belt, Zion & Lennox have captivated fans worldwide and have been a fundamental influence in reggaetón culture and what it’s become today. Their last album, Motivan2, debuted at #1 on iTunes in the US and Latin America. The album included international smash hit, “Otra Vez,”  featuring J Balvin, which garnered over a billion views on YouTube and landed them on Spotify’s coveted “Global Top 50” chart. Zion & Lennox’s follow-up single, “Hola,” closed out 2018 at #1 on US Radio Airplay.

Netflix’s Halston Recap

“You are only as good as the people you dress” – Halston.

To the world, he is better known as Halston: the first American fashion designer who changed fashion forever. The new Netflix limited series Halston tells the story of fashion legend Roy Halston Frowick.

Created by Ryan Murphy and directed by Daniel Minahan, the five-episode series is adapted from the 1991 book Simply Halston: The Untold Story by Steven Gaines. It focuses on the rise and fall of the late designer (played by Ewan McGregor) known for dressing socialites and celebrities–notably Babe Paley, Liza Minnelli, and Jackie O.

With being the designer that brought American fashion onto the grid, many have been interested in Halston’s life. It is not the first time that his glamorous and tortured story has been put in the spotlight (2019 documentary Halston). But Ryan Murphy takes Halston and produces a version of him that does not try to escape his queerness. Some might not agree with this version of him, but Halston definitely shows us that with fame and status, stardom can also be very lonely.

Episode 1: “Becoming Halston”

The opening shot brings us to Halston’s hometown in 1933: a farm in Evansville, Indiana. Quite creative since his early days, Episode 1 shows Halston taking feathers from the chicken coop and making a hat for his mom. By 1961, he is known for designing Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hats. Unfortunately, by 1968 Jackie O stops wearing them, and Halston’s hats become an afterthought.

The intro shows us how quick trends fade, and Halston sets out on his journey to rebrand himself. He tries to take a page from Ralph Lifshitz (now globally known as Ralph Lauren). Halston tries to create an exclusive American couture line for Bergdorf Goodman. However, the fashion world is not interested in his black and white dresses and not a single piece sells.

Unfazed, Halston meets up with illustrator Joe Eula (played by David Pittu), convincing him to join the Halston team. Eula tells Halston, “You want to be Balenciaga. There’s already a Balenciaga. What we need is to figure out your signature.” At the same time, Halston is introduced to Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), who compares Halston’s pillbox hats to her famous mother Judy Garland: “You and me are living under the shadow of something, and we’re both trying to do the same thing.” Minnelli becomes Halston’s first muse, shaping her into a friend and collaborator over the course of the series.

Securing funding of $100,000, Halston gathers a small crew to set up shop: Joe Eula, model Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan), and junior partner Joel Schumacher (Rory Culkin). Halston takes Schumacher’s idea of a flowy, dyed fabric and makes dresses out of them. Though the show doesn’t lead to any sales, it gains American socialite Barbara “Babe” Paley’s interest. During the meeting with Paley (Regina Schneider), Halston shows her Ultrasuede synthetic trench coats, claiming “It’s sexy. It’s comfort. It’s freedom.” She takes one in every color.

Episode 2: “Versailles”

The star of this episode is the iconic Battle of Versailles, which pitted French designers against American designers. In the French establishment is Yves Saint LaurentPierre CardinEmanuel UngaroMarc Bohan (Dior), and Hubert de Givenchy. The American establishment is composed of Oscar de la RentaStephen BurrowsBill BlassAnne Klein, and Halston.

Though at first, Halston was not interested in the 1973 fundraiser for the Versailles, which also doubled as a means to get the American fashion name out to the world. Despite every woman in Central Park wearing his Ultrasuede, Halston tells publicist Eleanor Lambert (Kelly Bishop) that he can’t do a fundraiser because he’s broke. Trying to balance art and commerce, Eleanor sets Halston up with David Mahoney who wants to buy Halston’s licensing, proposing mass production. However, Halston initially refuses, saying “you’re only as good as the people you dress.”

Norton Simon sponsors Halston’s team to go to the Versailles show, and Halston convinces Minnelli to tag along and perform for him. With his entourage, they travel to Paris with 24 designs in an attempt to show their worth to the fashion industry. While nothing seemed to be going right at first – the backdrop size is wrong, costumes have not arrived, looks need to be designed – Minnelli forces Halston to pick himself up as his nerves get the better of him. And Halston does, slaying the runway with a 70s purple sequin dress, topped with a feathered hand fan that gets him a standing ovation. Original designs can be seen here.

By the end of the episode, we see a glimpse of Halston wanting protection from his “magical” childhood that was actually lonely and scary. He signs the contract with David, “If I sign that contract, I must never, ever, be left to feel unappreciated, underfunded, unprotected, unsafe. Promise me that, David.” While not everyone agrees with him selling his name, Halston gets new cash flow at the expense of his trademark name, pushing him through to stardom.

Episode 3: “The Sweet Smell of Success”

Focusing on Halston’s first fragrance, the third episode reminds us of Halston’s roots and the scents that created him. In the opening scene, we watch Elsa design a sensual perfume bottle for Halston, though the gravity defying perfume stopper is not sold to Mahoney. In an interesting conversation about phallic symbolisms, Halston is told the stopper is impossible to manufacture.

Arguing that creativity wins commercialism, Halston writes a check for $50,000 to pay for his own manufacturer, unwilling to compromise the exclusivity of the design. To create his scent, we are met with Adele (Vera Farmiga), who forces Halston to dig into his past for scents that evoke emotions. Adele bends Halston to her demands, and we get to see Halston’s inner, broken child more than ever in this episode. They discuss different scents and the memories Halston has connected to them: his fascination with scentless orchids, spring grass, tobacco, and his lover’s jockstrap.

Liza is off getting married and Halston has a breakdown. His lover boy, Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez), points out that Halston just wants yes men and loyalty, and not everyone can do that for him. While work-life balance is not something that Halston achieves, his perfume becomes one of America’s best-selling perfumes, achieving $85 million in sales within the first two years. This led Halston to launch a plethora of new products–including suitcases, sunglasses, and carpets.

Despite all his success, we see that Halston does not find much love at Studio 54. In the heartbreaking final scene, we watch Hugo witnessing his lover having sex with another partner. While people are lined up buying products by Halston, he does not seem to have anything for himself.

Episode 4: “The Party’s Over”

Studio 54-era of Halston’s life: This episode shows Halston’s spiral into drugs and partying. The surplus and gluttony in overwhelming success and his cocaine addiction has him dropping the ball on his business, Liza faints on the dancefloor due to her drug habit, and there is a vent death at Studio 54.

Calvin Klein takes reign as top designer, and Halston spends his time cursing his competitor out. David Mahoney believes that jeans could be Halston’s next best creation and proposes the idea to Halston, in which is declined. As he loses his self-control, Halston designs have stopped selling at a growing rate. On the other hand, Elsa starts to be successful at Tiffany’s as a jewelry designer. Halston’s ego takes a problem with this, as he thinks he is the only one with talent and that Elsa should be thankful for him and give him credit. Belittling everyone around him due to jealousy, Halston pushes everyone away, left with nothing but his own name.

Halston’s mother dies unexpectedly, and this changes his mind about designing jeans when he sees a Calvin Klein commercial (starring Brooke Shields, originally from the 1980s). His ego takes a beating when David tells him he is “six months too late,” and Halston is no longer setting the fashion trends.

Things don’t look up for Halston either, as Mahoney tries to take Norton private and fails, resulting in a change of management. The AIDS pandemic is seen through the lens of Victor who tests positive for HIV, and Liza checks into rehab. Unsurprisingly, Halston is left in isolation by the end of it. With no other choice, he becomes the inhouse designer for JCPenney for some petty cash, and we no longer see the Halston that believed in exclusivity and creative control.

Episode 5: “Critics”

With designing how JCPenney, Halston is no longer having any fun. With pushing everyone around him away, he is only left with his assistant by his side and that is only because she is “getting paid to do so.” Halston begins showing up to the office at dinner, pushing off his deadlines, all while snorting large amounts of cocaine.

The company replaces Halston with designer John David Ridge (Jack Mikesell), the first person that lets Halston know he is an embarrassment, “How dare you be so irresponsible with the empire you spent your whole life working for?”

After being diagnosed with HIV and forced to retire, Halston’s life is put into perspective, and he really thinks about what he wants out of this life. Perhaps afraid that he might die without a final design to call his own, he seeks out his friend Martha Graham, and designs a spandex collection for her show. The reviews for this design gives Halston the acceptance that he was searching for the entire life and he finally admits that “Halston” was not just him, it was his entire team.

The series ends with Halston leaving to the West Coast and spending the rest of his days along the Pacific Ocean, mixed with tearful snippets of him watching Graham’s Persephone.

“We’re given one name… just one. And that’s all we have when we’re on the earth. And that’s all we leave behind us when we’re gone. I wasn’t precious enough with mine.” – Halston to Joe Eula, Halston Episode 5.

While five episodes is not enough to talk about Halston’s magnificent life, we get to see the grandeur of Halston’s reign in Ryan Murphy’s rendition. Captivating and intoxication, we see his friendships and intimate scenes unfolding in the series. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, you cannot deny the legacy that is Halston.

“Halston” premiered May 14 on Netflix.

HYPEACH

Miami Swim Week wrapped up this weekend and one of California’s hottest new women’s fashion brands, Hypeach, made their debut appearance at the event.

As a young company that launched in early 2020, Hypeach has managed to quickly become a Southern California breakthrough brand, with the company being covered in Forbes, Access Daily, Telemundo and numerous other media outlets in its first year alone.

At Miami Swim Week, Hypeach showcased its recently released California Fresh Summer Collection, which included sexy yet tasteful eye-catching swimwear designs from their Los Angeles-made line, Hypeach Swim™. And, in addition to being a playful and feminine fashion line, one of the Hypeach core values is fashion that gives back. The company practices this by donating a portion of its sales to Global Girl Media, a non-profit organization that works to equip girls from underserved communities with training skills in journalism and media.

The Southern California brand was founded by Marlo and Brian Hovis. The husband & wife team are no strangers to the retailing world. Brian was VP of Marketing at Nordstrom & Head of Global Digital Marketing at Citibank before starting a line with his wife at the creative helm. Marlo is the Chief Brand Officer and Creative Director at Hypeach overseeing all brand strategy, product, creative and strategic partnerships. Last week, we got the chance to ask Marlo and Brian about their brand and partnerships.

What is Hypeach founded on?

Hypeach is a breakthrough California-based fashion brand that is inspired by the coastal lifestyle of Southern California. Hypeach offers affordable, stylish clothes that are distinctly Californian in aesthetic, hence its “California Fresh” style. Launched in 2020 to evolve the fast fashion ecommerce market space, Hypeach offers consistently high-quality apparel, unbelievable prices, and an exceptional customer experience.

Fashion That Gives Back is our mission. We donate a portion of every purchase to our charity partner, Global Girl Media, which equips young women from underrepresented backgrounds with journalism training and equipment to help reshape the media. We believe together we can accomplish so much more.

What was the experience like of being a standout successful fashion brand and landing a coveted spot at Planet Fashion TV’s Miami Swim Week showcase?

Miami Swim Week is like no other fashion event. Smoldering temperatures, sexy beautiful people, and styles, plus a distinct electricity in the air. We were honored to be able to debut our swim collection there. Putting together a fashion show at swim week truly was a dream and we were proud to be able to showcase our Made in Los Angeles Hypeach Swim line and represent California.

We brought our fun and flashy collection of swim and summer ready styles and everything about our show was simply happy & hopeful. Joy Corrigan, a Victoria’s Secret model and fashion icon, opened and closed our show and her younger sister Gina walked for the first time with us!

What is the partnership with Global Girl Media? How does Hypeach work to uplift the voices of underrepresented girls in media and journalism?

Before we established Hypeach we knew we wanted to use fashion as a force for good. The business presented an opportunity to support causes in a larger way through collective giving with every purchase.

Global Girl Media (GGM) is such a powerful, female-run organization global in reach but HQ in Los Angeles. They equip young girls from marginalized communities with journalism training equipment & training to tell their own stories and contribute to the media landscape. They empower young women with media literacies to become positive agents of change.

Not only do we donate a portion of every purchase, but we periodically host participants at our HQ to create content, dress up, and have a unique experience in front of the camera. We’re currently exploring the possibility of refugee makeovers and how our partnership can deepen its connections. Marlo also sits on the executive board, and we are exploring how we can also work with fashion influencers and strategic partners to help support the mission and participants in creative ways.

Platinum-Certified singer, songwriter, and producer Jeremy Zucker drops his new single “HONEST.” The song is the second single from his highly anticipated sophomore album, out later this year.

As acoustic guitar strums alongside singsongy percussion, Jeremy laments a relationship on the brink. His voice rings out on the observation, “I was so sentimental, and you came for my head, we were both on the brink, I was holding my breath,” before finally pleading, “Just be honest with me babe. The song’s organic instrumentation matches Jeremy’s open-hearted delivery and illuminates yet another side of his songwriting and artistry, as he continues to evolve with no shortage of emotion or intuition.

Jeremy says, “‘HONEST’ is one of my favorite songs i’ve ever written thus far, and i’m so excited to finally share it with everyone. It’s about someone I used to date who turned out to be a pathological liar. the realization that I was being lied to and manipulated by someone I sincerely trusted hit me like a brick wall.”

LIL MOE 6BLOCKA × ROOGA: SCRAPPERS

Lil Moe 6Blocka and Rooga released SCRAPPERS, a nine-track mixtape.

SCRAPPERS is a powerful testament to the importance of mentorship. Rooga, a lynchpin of the Chicago rap scene since the release of his acclaimed 2016 tape, I Am Scrapp, has taught Moe a better way to navigate life. In turn, 16-year-old Moe  a disciple of drill rap who has released high-octane hits like “Risky” (named one of “the best hip-hop songs of 2021” by HipHopDx and later making waves with a remix featuring 22Gz), “Leave Em Stretched,” “Nothin,” “Ion Know,” “What I Say,” and 6Blocka has sparked a renewed hustle in Rooga.

The mixtape’s first single, “Get You Wacked,” was produced by C-Sick, one of the pioneering producers of the Windy City’s drill scene. Bristling with bravado and sly wordplay, it announced the duo’s auspicious arrival and establishes them as a force to be reckoned with. View the official video, which has amassed over half a million views. The follow-up single, “No Love,” was included in HipHopDX’s New Music Friday roundup alongside artists like Bas, J. Cole, and Post Malone.

Both Moe and I have been losing friends, losing brothers, and we’re tied by that bond,” explains Rooga.

The duo aligns lyrical styles to create meditative tracks that reckon with the violence each has witnessed in their lives. Rooga passionately raps about his son the future and about keeping guns off the streets. Moe pays homage to his friend Dooski, who passed in 2018. On “Street 2 Me,” Rooga spits, “I just took the shorties out the hood and showed em something different.” Meanwhile, Moe’s verses show that he knows the status quo too well. “There’s no getting past the hard shit,” Moe says. “I just keep taking it in and doing what I do. I try not to think about it, but it can be hard to escape.”

The mixtape’s title is multi-faceted metaphor. It’s a nod of respect to Rooga’s little brother “Scrapp” and others they’ve lost and an acknowledgement of how the losses have left Moe and Rooga as the “scraps,” the remaining fragments. It’s also about scrapping doing what you need to do to overcome. Moe and Rooga have taken different paths, but they’ve come to the same conclusion: Rap is both the best way to remember those they’ve lost, and to try to prevent that pain from happening again.
