QUEEN THE GREATEST

A celebration of 50 of the greatest moments from the Queen story so far.

A 50-week YouTube series celebrating key moments in Queen’s history reminding us why Queen and their music continue to beloved across the world.

Episode 20: “1980: Queen At The Movies Take 1: Flash Gordon”

An unusual venture sees Queen take on a movie soundtrack, with the band determined that the resulting album should be as musically rewarding as their previous ones. Brian and Roger describe how this exciting project came about and broke new ground.

“I think we were quite well ahead of the game there.” – Roger Taylor

“Oh, its not going to work for my film.” – Dino De Laurentiis, Producer

Queen The Greatest Episodes 1-19 Out Now Here.

The Greatest, the journey through the Queen story so far celebrating their biggest songs, performances and achievements, this week looks back at a fascinating new departure for the band.

For what would be the band’s ninth studio album, this would also be a first for them, their first movie soundtrack. It is, of course, Flash Gordon. For a band given to aural spectacular, it seemed a perfect fit although producer Dino De Laurentiis did have his moment of doubt.

In 1980, work on Flash began in tandem with the recording sessions for The Game, but while this would obviously represent something of a departure for the band, they were determined to make it as much a Queen album as their previous ones.

Set against some rare footage of the band live performing “Flash” to image track in London’s Advision Studios, Brian and Roger explain how the project came about.

Roger Taylor: “It was an interesting offer really from (producer) Dino De Laurentiis, and Joe Smith, head of Elektra Records, engineered the whole thing really. And, it was interesting actually, because the film was a big hit in Europe and UK, and flopped completely in America.”

Brian May: “But it became a cult video thing later on. I feel pretty proud of the Flash thing, because really this was the first time that a rock soundtrack had actually been put to a movie which wasnt about rock music.

“There was a lot of resistance to it, a lot of people said it wouldnt work, including Dino. When he first heard it, he went “oh, its not going to work for my film,” the idea of the rock music being in there. But he pretty soon became accustomed to the idea, and he loved it in the end.”

Roger Taylor: “It actually was sort of Brians thing really, and it really did forge quite a lot. I mean you never heard heavy rock – a lot of it was quite heavy – music on a film, and so this battle sequence is really quite ground breaking.”

Brian May: “It was, I think, the first.”

Roger Taylor: “And now you cant see a movie without soundtrack albums coming at you and heavy music.”

Brian May: “And heavy guitars.”

Roger Taylor: “So I think we were quite well ahead of the game there.”

As The Game album started to take up more of the band’s time, Brian took on the responsibility of getting the soundtrack over the line. The title track, “Flash,” would be the only single released, but the album is crammed full of classic Queen tunes  not least “The Hero,” which became a stellar opening to the live showߪ.as can be seen in this band performance in Milton Keynes, UK, June 5 1982.

Understandably, this project begged the question at the time as to whether Queen would consider doing another movie soundtrack. Roger Taylor said at the time: “This film thing was very interesting, and if somebody comes up with a really fascinating offer for another film, perhaps we might think about that. But, no, were a rock and roll band, think we always will be.”

Queen did of course make a return to scoring with their second soundtrack six years later, for another science-fiction fantasy, the hugely successful Highlander.

More of that later.

Tonino Lamborghini Timepieces and BeauGeste Luxury Brands

Tonino Lamborghini Timepieces and BeauGeste Luxury Brands the Brand’s exclusive agent in the USA will participate in the next edition of Couture in Las Vegas from August 24-26, 2021. Held annually at the luxurious Wynn Resort, the Couture Show is one of the leading trade shows specializing in designer fine jewelry and luxury timepieces. In addition, BeauGeste Luxury Brands will exhibit Tonino Lamborghini watches in the “Krug” ballroom and showcase the entire collection to America’s elite top-tier buyers and the most recognized luxury consumer and trade media.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view the newly redesigned Cuscinetto, originally launched in 1983 when Tonino Lamborghini created one of his first watch models taking inspiration from a mechanical element, the ball bearing (in Italian, “cuscinetto”). In addition, this model features a unique bidirectional rotating bezel worthy of the rich engineering tradition of the “Bull brand.”

Thirty-six years later, Tonino’s son, Ferruccio Lamborghini, redesigned the case in titanium with Torx screws and four different colour variations, mounted a new Swiss movement, and inserted a branded deployment buckle. As Tonino donated the first Cuscinetto to his father, so did Ferruccio, thus carrying on the Lamborghini family’s tradition.

Like the Spyderleggero Skeleton, another iconic watch from the brand, this watch is dedicated to the man who is ambitious, determined, and competitive. As with the Spyderleggero Chrono, it conveys the personality of the Italian “Bull brand.” In addition, it summarizes all the unique features of the new branded timepieces: stylistic sophistication, bold design, manufacturing research, light materials, ergonomics, and performance.

The minutes and hours dials recall the image of a sandglass, epitomizing the passage of time because as Latins used to say – “Tempus fugit” (time flies).

Just as the sand flows from one part of the hourglass to the other, in the Spyderleggero Chrono, the future enters the past marking the evolution of the Tonino Lamborghini brand.

Panfilo diving watch: In medieval times, the word “Panfilo” (or panflio, a traditional Greek boat) indicated a warship. The term refers to a motor, sailing, or pleasure boat of big dimensions with comfortable accommodation in modern and contemporary days, also called a yacht or motor yacht in English. Tonino Lamborghini has dedicated its first divers’ watch to oceans enthusiasts, people who love to sail or dive and pursue in water the same challenges and goals they chase on the road.

The slanting numbers and indexes on the unidirectional rotating bezel add dynamism and vitality to this timepiece, allowing a firm and secure grip when submerged in the aquatic World. The design of the titanium “sandwich case” – with original holes in the lugs inspired by the sport car frames and four visible Torx screws – is a clear tribute to the automotive heritage of the Brand.

In five different colour variations, it is also available in a typical blue ocean shade perfect to match with the rubber strap that further recalls the colour of the deep sea. Panfilo is a diver watch with an elegant yet sporty and robust design that mirrors the values of the Tonino Lamborghini brand.

“After one year and a half of pandemic, we are delighted to take part in Couture Las Vegas 2021 thru our exclusive agent BeauGeste, because this exhibition has always been a reference point for the watchmaking industry in this part of the World.

The USA has always been a significant market for our Brand and our timepieces, so it is strategically fundamental for us to participate this year. In addition, since USA clients have always shown much interest in our Brand and products, this market has often driven our choices in terms of design, trends, and proposals. Couture is the first trade show we can finally attend live, so we are eager to present our Swiss-made collection face-to-face to our potential clients. I am very excited about this opportunity and looking forward to receiving feedback for a project that I have personally followed and developed for many months; thus, I hope this Las Vegas appointment will set a new course for Tonino Lamborghini Watches in the United States.” Ferruccio Lamborghini, CEO and VP of Tonino Lamborghini Spa.

According to Thierry Chaunu, Founder & President of BeauGeste Luxury Brands, himself a Cartier and Chopard veteran with 35 years of luxury watch and jewelry expertise, “in the history of watchmaking, it is uncommon when a house with a prestigious engineering heritage and universal renown such as Tonino Lamborghini successfully applies its rich DNA to the particular demands of fine horology, thus upholding the same level of excellence in design and craftsmanship”.

BeauGeste Luxury was founded in 2015 by Thierry Chaunu to promote diamonds, fine diamond jewelry, watches, and other carefully curated high-end luxury goods to select jewelry retailers, VIP private customers, and watch collectors, connoisseurs.

BeauGeste is inspired by the gesture of the artisans: skilled diamond jewelers, pedigreed watchmakers. It is also a tribute to the Gesture of Giving, a time-honored tradition of offering to love one’s products with a soul designed and manufactured to pass from one generation to the next. And, as true luxury is honored again, after years of globalized mass luxury, BeauGeste is the natural place where passionate creators can meet their enlightened patrons.

Rockstar Original – DTLA Headquarters

Inspired by the owners of the brand Frank Mechaly and David Mathey, the philosophy of Rockstar is to always stay-true and remember your roots. Rockstar believes that being genuine means finding the path to both a soulful and aesthetic balance. The unique sense of handcrafted details, the passion for quality and sustainability, and a nose for long-living trends makes Rockstar the ultimate must have for fashionistas worldwide.

Rockstar Original recently moved into their newly refurbished headquarters in Downtown Los Angeles and I was lucky enough to be invited for a tour of the office. Starting with a complimentary Uber Lux ride, we were picked up in a Black Chevrolet Suburban (the whole Beyonce experience!) directly to the Rockstar Original offices; a 20,000 square foot workspace that all of Rockstar’s creative processes happens.

Much like how the brand is very focused on individualistic touches, the workspace features many artworks that are hip and unique, such as contemporary sculptures by the French street artist David DAVID and installations by Los Angeles-based artist Punk Me Tender. In Frank and David’s office, both sides are decked out with BE@RBRICK figures, created by Japan’s Medicom Toy, also a canvas for modern expression and intersection of style, art, and fashion.

Over a glass of champagne and a prepared charcuterie board, I sat down with Frank Mechaly to talk about the new office space and view some of their latest drops. The new Rockstar location used to be a fabric warehouse, and they were the first brand to move in March 2020, “When all this happened over the pandemic… you know, I really thought we were crazy. But it all worked out.” David also popped by to say hello and gave me a tour around the office, showing us the warehouse where shipments came in and out every day (they’re even running out of space!), the printing studio where each piece is made, the customer service center, and photo studios. Due to space constraints, Rockstar also has another atelier further down the street where they go in to add final touches, hand paint, and wash products.

Anyone who steps into this space can tell that Rockstar is well thought out and has a sense of uniqueness in their designs, “We build our denim thinking how it can empower and flourish the potential of every single individual.” At Rockstar Original, they are known for their streetwear style and are dropping hundreds of looks every month. They have an in-house photographer shooting in the first-floor studio every day, and new looks ready to be photographed every couple of hours. This allows Rockstar to constantly be up to date with the latest trends happening in the hip-hop and rap music world. Frank mentions that both him and David are behind every single style that they drop on the website, making sure that their pieces are always aligned with the brand DNA, “We want to make sure you can always instantly recognize one of our iconic jackets and track sets.”

Rockstar also sent me home with a goodie bag filled with fashionable pieces, including their best-selling Roman Chain Necklace, this super flattering Sadie Skirt Set, a matching track set, some high-tops, and more.

ADAMVS Winery Welcomes Alberto Bianchi as Winemaker

Bianchi Will Steward the Estate Vineyard and Winery Towards Vintners’ Old-World

Vision to be a Grand Cru of Napa Valley’s Howell Mountain

Denise Adams, co-owner of ADAMVS, a profound and geologically diverse Estate vineyard resting atop the legendary Howell Mountain, is thrilled to announce the appointment of Alberto Bianchi as Winemaker.  The Adams are also proprietor/vintners of Château Fonplégade, a Grand Cru Classé Château and vineyard in St. Émilion, Bordeaux.

Bianchi was selected by ADAMVS owners, Denise and Stephen Adams, following an extensive, months-long search for a winemaker who would not only steward ADAMVS wines in the cellar, but rear them from the moment of their inception in the vineyard, working closely alongside Consulting Winemaker, Philippe Melka.

“During our extensive recruitment process for a new winemaker, we knew this special individual would have to share our passion for purity, balance, and a near-obsessive approach to careful and responsible farming,” said Denise Adams. “We knew he or she would have to speak our language; one of total commitment to wines of integrity, place, purpose and emotion. Alberto Bianchi was a perfect match for our philosophy and vision.”

Raised in Milan, Italy, Bianchi’s passion for the vine and wine began at the age of seven, while helping his grandfather craft Barbera wine in his cellar, wine that the family enjoyed throughout the year.  It is not just the act of winemaking that has always been of interest to Bianchi, it’s also the “romantic and heroic” nature of viticulture in extreme sites that has ignited the passion and commitment to wine that drives him today.  He believes that the vineyard is the heartbeat of a winery.

“I’m greatly honored to join the ADAMVS team.  The first time I visited the property I felt an instant connection,” said Bianchi. “Wine is a synonym for culture: it is the pure expression of the land, the soil, the climate and the people.  It’s with great pleasure that I start this amazing journey on Howell Mountain.”

Bianchi holds a bachelor’s degree in Winemaking and Viticulture from the University of Milan and a double master’s degree in Winemaking and Viticulture from the University of Turin and the University of Lisbon.  After completing his studies, Bianchi travelled extensively throughout Italy, France, Australia, Argentina and New Zealand, experiencing a variety of cultures and characters and winemaking techniques with the different grape varieties, and honing his craft.

In 2012, Bianchi was selected for LVMH’s Estates & Wines Early Career Winemakers program, where three up-and-coming winemakers are sent to three countries for three years of intensive training and development.  He began in Argentina, as Assistant Winemaker at Terrazas de los Andes, followed by a year at Newton Vineyard on Spring Mountain, Napa, before his final rotation at Cloudy Bay in New Zealand, where winemaker, Tim Heath, became a mentor. “He taught me the importance of being respectful of the wine you have in front of you,” Bianchi said.

Upon completion of this three-year program, Bianchi returned to Newton in 2016 as Head of Winemaking.  Today, Bianchi possesses the same boyish wonder that he felt as a child assisting his grandparents in Italy.  His quest is to translate the beauty, nature and elements of ADAMVS’ profound and geologically diverse site into elegant wines that will evolve through time.

ADAMVS offers private tastings and experiences by advance appointment to allocation list members.  For more information, and to join the waitlist, please visit the official website.

The Mastroberardino family has been farming grapes and producing wine since the mid-eighteenth century, dating back 10 generations. Their efforts ignited a resurgence in quality red and white wine production across Southern Italy. Working primarily with Campania’s ancient, native varietals—Fiano, Greco and Aglianico—Mastroberardino has revived would-be extinct grapes into world-class varieties.

“We are always excited to teach our guests about Italian wines and look forward to our monthly Taste & Learn events,” said Gino Ferraro, owner of Ferraro’s. “With Chef Mimmo’s thoughtful pairings, it’s not only an incredible wine education experience, but also a wonderful culinary one.”

LEED for Building Design and Construction, the category through which the Hotel received the coveted designation, provides a framework for building a holistic green building and gives developers a chance to create a healthy, resource-efficient and cost-effective building that also enhances the lives and experiences of everyone who walks through its doors. LEED certified buildings use less energy and water, avoiding waste and saving on maintenance costs, improving indoor air quality and creating less environmental burden on their community. Green building has subsequently grown into a trillion-dollar industry and LEED has become the most widely used green building program in the world.
