The Role of Texture in Interior Design

In the realm of interior design, texture is often an unsung hero. While color schemes and furniture choices typically take center stage, texture plays a crucial supporting role; bringing depth, interest, and a sense of cohesion to a space. Whether through the roughness of a brick wall, the softness of a velvet cushion, or the sleekness of a glass table, textures can transform a room from flat and uninviting to rich and engaging.

The Significance of Texture in Interior Design

Texture refers to the surface quality of a material; how it feels and how it looks. It can be tactile – how it physically feels – or visual – how it appears to feel. Adding a sensory dimension to your design, texture can make spaces feel more dynamic and livelier.

Creates Visual Interest: A room filled with smooth, flat surfaces can appear dull. Incorporating a variety of textures – rough, soft, shiny or matte – keeps the eye moving around the room; discovering new details and layers.

Adds Depth and Dimension: Texture can create the illusion of depth in a space. For instance, a textured wallpaper or a plush rug can make a room feel more substantial and multi-dimensional.

Enhances Comfort and Cosiness: Textures contribute to the physical and psychological comfort of a space. Think about how soft fabrics, warm wood grains and comfortable carpets can make a room feel inviting.

Defines Spaces: In open-plan living areas, textures can help delineate different zones. For example, a smooth, laminate flooring in the kitchen area can transition to a soft, textured carpet in the living room; subtly marking the change in function.

Exploring Different Textures and Their Impact

To effectively use texture in your interior design, it’s essential to understand how different textures can affect a space.

Smooth and Sleek Textures: Materials like glass, metal and polished stone have smooth textures that can create a modern and clean aesthetic. These textures reflect light, making spaces feel larger and more open. For instance, a glass coffee table or a stainless-steel kitchen countertop can add a contemporary flair to your home.

Soft and Plush Textures: Textures like brick stone and reclaimed wood add a natural, rugged charm to interiors. These materials can introduce an organic feel, grounding the space and introducing character. A stone fireplace or a reclaimed wood dining table can serve as focal points that bring an element of nature inside.

Textured Fabrics: Incorporating different fabrics – linen, silk, burlap, etc. – can add layers of texture to your décor. For example, silk curtains can add a touch of elegance, while a linen tablecloth can offer a more casual and relaxed vibe.

Patterned Textures: Patterns can also contribute to the textural richness of a space. Think about wallpaper with embossed patterns, a rug with a geometric design, parquet flooring in a herringbone pattern or a throw pillow with intricate embroidery. These can all add visual texture and interest to your home.

Practical Tips for Using Texture

Incorporating texture into your interior design doesn’t have to be daunting.

Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to combine different textures. Mixing smooth and rough ones, for example, can create a balanced and dynamic look. Consider pairing a sleek modern table with rough-hewn wooden chairs to add contrast and interest.

Layer Textures: Layering is a powerful technique for adding depth to a space. Start with a base layer, such as a textured rug, and build upon it with other elements like cushions, throws and decorative objects.

Consider the Room’s Function: The textures you choose should align with the function of your room. For instance, soft, plush textures are ideal for a bedroom as comfort is key; but smoother, more durable textures are better suited for busy areas like the kitchen.

Balance is Necessary: While texture adds interest, it’s still important to strike a balance. Too many different textures can make a room feel chaotic. You want to aim for a harmonious bled that complements each other without overwhelming your space.

Use Texture to Highlight Features: You can use texture to draw attention to architectural features or focal points in a room. Think about how a textured accent wall could highlight a fireplace or a piece of art.

Don’t Forget Visual Texture: Even if you’re not changing the physical texture, you can add visual texture through patterns and colours. A monochromatic room can still be interesting if different shades and subtle patterns are used.

Seasonal Textures: Consider changing your textures with the seasons to keep your home feeling fresh and in tune with the time of year. During the summer months, think about using light and airy fabrics like cotton and linen. As the weather gets colder, heavy and warm textures are perfect; think about wool and velvet for the winter months. This approach can keep your décor feeling current and adaptable as it’s easy to change the textures of textiles.

Lamborghini + Norisring

Lamborghini leads DTM driver and manufacturer standings after the second win of the year at Norisring

Lamborghini claimed its second DTM victory of the season courtesy of SSR Performance’s Nicki Thiim on the streets of the Norisring in Nuremberg. Meanwhile, teammate Mirko Bortolotti snatched the lead of the championship after a pair of top five finishes.

The #94 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 of Thiim was the class of the field on Sunday, having taken pole position in the morning and leading comfortably before the mandatory pit-stops. The Danish driver, who finished fourth in Saturday’s opening race after qualifying second, came home just under a second clear of Maro Engel’s Mercedes, with Bortolotti taking the final place on the podium in third.

Along with his fifth place in race one and the points gained for starting second for Sunday’s second encounter, Bortolotti moved into the lead of the standings heading into the fifth round of the year at the Nürburgring in August. The latest victory also means that Lamborghini lead the Manufacturers championship.

Thiim’s victory is Lamborghini’s second of the 2024 DTM season – and SSR Performance’s first – with GRT – Grasser Racing Team’s Luca Engstler taking the win in the second race of the year at Oschersleben.

The Huracán GT3 EVO2 was on the pace all weekend at the five-turn, 2.162km circuit, with four cars inside the top 10 at the end of the first free practice session on Friday morning. Thiim and Bortolotti then confirmed the pace of the SSR cars with the third and fourth quickest times, respectively, in the second session. Come qualifying, due to the tight nature of the track, the field was split into two separate groups, with the grid determined by the quickest times from each session.

Bortolotti’s podium means he now holds a five-point margin in the championship standings over the Audi of Kelvin van der Linde, heading into the Nürburgring, historically a strong circuit for Lamborghini and where the Lamborghini Factory Driver claimed a victory last year.

Fans have been given an access all areas (AAA) pass to experience the making of ‘(Can’t Get You) Off My Mind’ track and music video, through the socials of all three artists and official Coke Studio Hub. This track kicks off the first season of the Coke Studio platform in Australia and New Zealand.

Watch the official video clip for ‘(Can’t Get You) Off My Mind’

Global Aussie star Tones And I said: “It was great to work with Young Franco and CHAII, and bring our fans along for the journey at Coke Studio. I think it’s sick that Coke Studio celebrates the power of music in bringing people from different backgrounds, cultures, and styles together. It was a big collaboration for all of us, coming together to make something fun, which is what most music is, I think.”

Aussie artist and producer Young Franco said: “To work with Tones And I and CHAII has allowed me to experiment with different sounds, which, as an artist and producer, was such a great experience. Regarding the sound, we wanted to embody a funky era of disco in the song, a vibe that I love to incorporate in a lot of my own music. Despite the underlying nostalgic roots, the beat still feels modern and of the moment. It felt right to bring in some retro cues and modernise them to play on the heritage and culture of the Coke brand”.

New Zealand artist and producer CHAII said: “Getting to work with my Aussie pals has been exciting. We wanted to create a song full of energy that is soulful yet something you can dance to. It’s been a great journey and the friendships that came out of it have been the highlight for me. I hope you enjoy what we have made and can create some fun memories like I did making the song with Tones And I and Young Franco.”

You can check out the new track and video ‘(Can’t Get You) Off My Mind’ on YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify, and for more magical moments fans can keep an eye out for future Coke Studio Australia and New Zealand artist collisions coming soon via the Coke Studio Hub.

Marine Toys for Tots

Marine Toys for Tots announces our Christmas in July campaign to help even more children in need this holiday season. The program is a year-round force good, providing hope and emotional support whenever it’s needed most. Our initiatives beyond the holiday season have been more valuable than ever as families struggle with inflation and continue to experience challenging circumstances.

Toys for Tots doesn’t want to wait until the holiday season to support children in need. Working with local nonprofits across the Nation, Toys for Tots is conducting our fourth annual Christmas in July initiative to bring the same Christmastime magic and hope to underprivileged children in July.

“Needs aren’t seasonal, and neither is Toys for Tots,” says LtGen Laster.  “With the rising cost of living and other economic challenges, parents are finding it increasingly difficult to pay bills and put food on their family’s table.  Buying toys, books, or games for their children seems completely out of reach. With the support from our generous donors, we can make sure every child’s future is as bright as possible – and deliver the magic of the holiday season in July.”

With every gift that is given, our generous supporters show how much they care about children who face poverty every day of the year. Santa’s boots are big ones to fill, but if anyone’s up to the task, it’s our faithful donors. Celebrate Christmas in July and help Toys for Tots continue to be a year-round force for good and deliver hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Alice Cooper + PGA

Rock legend Alice Cooper and six-time PGA Tour winner Rocco Mediate are teaming up for a unique new golf show airing exclusively on SiriusXM.

Since taking up the game nearly 50 years ago as he was recovering from alcohol addiction, Cooper has been one of golf’s best known celebrity devotees. He would say later that he had essentially traded one addiction for another. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been on the golf course six days a week for the past 30 years (even while touring), boasts an impressive four handicap, and titled his 2007 autobiography: “Alice Cooper, Golf Monster.”

Mediate and Cooper are frequent playing partners and on this show they will share stories from their careers, talk with guests from the worlds of entertainment and golf, and discuss the latest topics from the professional tour, equipment, instruction and more.

“Rolling the Rock with Alice Cooper and Rocco Mediate” will debut Tuesday, July 2 (6 pm ET) and air monthly on the SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio is available to listeners nationwide in their cars (channel 92) and on the SiriusXM app: https://sxm.app.link/PGATourRadioonSXM.

“Rocco asked me to do this show with him, talking about rock and golf, and it could not be a more perfect fit,” said Cooper. “We‘ve known each other a long time. We’ve played in many tournaments together. He’s a frustrated rocker and I’m a frustrated golfer. It’s match made on the fairway to heaven. It’s an anything goes show that is all improv – we have no idea what we’re going to talk about until we start talking. We’re quite literally just ‘rolling the rock.’”

“Alice and Rocco are larger-than-life personalities with a deep mutual love of golf and music, and on SiriusXM they have a platform to share their passion for both with our audience,” said Scott Greenstein, SiriusXM’s President and Chief Content Officer. “When you bring together two people who are among the best at what they do, and give them the freedom to create a show that truly showcases their personalities and perspectives, you get dynamic and compelling programming. If you are into golf, music or both, this is a show you don’t want to miss.”

Known as the architect of shock rock, Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that drew inspiration from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock. His extraordinary career in music has spanned 60 years, starting in the 1960s as leader of the Alice Cooper Band, whose albums “School’s Out” and “Billion Dollar Babies” climbed the charts in the 1970s. Cooper and the other members of the Alice Cooper Band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. As a solo artist, Cooper’s hits include “You and Me,” “I Never Cry” and “Welcome to My Nightmare.” Cooper continues to tour regularly today, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for.

Mediate joined the PGA TOUR in 1986 and earned the first of his six tour wins at the 1991 Doral-Ryder Open. He finished in the top 10 in major championships four times in his career. Perhaps the most memorable of these was his runner-up finish at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, when he competed head-to-head against Tiger Woods over 19 playoff holes. Mediate has four wins on PGA TOUR Champions since joining in 2013, including a major victory at the 2016 Senior PGA Championship.

In addition to hosting the new “Rolling the Rock” show, Mediate hosts his own twice-a-week program, “The Rocco Hour,” Monday and Tuesday nights on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio.

SiriusXM’s exclusive golf channel delivers live coverage of PGA TOUR events, The Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, the Open Championship and other events, as well as daily original programming focused on the latest golf news, instruction, equipment and more.
