The 2024 San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLOIFF) has announced that actress/director Heather Graham is this year’s King Vidor Award for Excellence in Filmmaking honoree. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the festival takes place in the beautiful Central Coast city of San Luis Obispo, situated halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, from April 25 through April 30.
Graham will receive the King Vidor Award at an official ceremony on Saturday, April 27, at the Hotel San Luis Obispo. A noon reception starts the festivities, followed by a “Conversation with Heather Graham.” A screening of her film, Chosen Family, which she wrote, directed and stars in, is scheduled for 5pm at the historic Fremont Theatre.
In Chosen Family, Ann (Heather Graham), a yoga teacher, struggles with her chaotic family and dismal dating life while battling her inability to say no and fix everyone’s problems. Struggling to repair her estranged relationship with her sister Clio (Julia Stiles) Ann relies on her friends Roz (Andrea Savage), Max (Thomas Lennon) and Frances (Odessa Rae) to be her rock and guide her through life’s troubling decisions.
Heather Graham discovered her passion for acting at an early age and caught the attention of filmmakers with her breakout role in Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy, for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination. She went on to land unforgettable roles in the 1997 classic Boogie Nights, for which she received the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, in 1999’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and in 2009’s The Hangover alongside Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifinakis.
In 2023, Graham could be seen in a variety of films including: The Other Zoey, a rom-com from director Sara Zandieh, alongside Andie MacDowell and Patrick Fabian; Netflix’s holiday film Best Christmas Ever with Brandy Norwood, Jason Biggs and Matt Cedeño; Suitable Flesh, which is streaming on Shudder, with Barbara Crampton; horror film Oracle; and opposite Dennis Quaid in MGM & LightWorkers’ On A Wing And A Prayer. She also appeared in the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations.
Graham has expanded into writing, directing, and producing, proving herself to be a leading multi-hyphenate talent. The critically acclaimed Half Magic, a film she wrote and directed, was released in theaters and on VOD in February 2018.
Written and directed by Graham, Chosen Family, made its world debut at the 2024 Santa Barbara Film Festival. Additionally, she’s set to star opposite Tom Hopper in Place of Bones, which is set for a 2024 release.
“Heather Graham embodies unwavering support for the independent film industry, earning her status as a beloved icon whose presence we deeply treasure and admire. We are honored with the privilege of not only acknowledging her remarkable contributions but also reveling in the spirit of this extraordinary woman. As the festival has been led by women for three decades, we’re honored to celebrate our anniversary with an incredible talent,” said SLOIFF Executive Director Skye McLennan.
Past recipients of the King Vidor Award for Excellence in Filmmaking include Lawrence Kasdan, Pam Grier, Josh Brolin, Peter Bogdanovich, Jeff Bridges, Ann-Margret, Morgan Freeman, Eva Marie Saint, and Robert Wise, among many others.

Beyoncé, who has won the most Grammys ever, has set numerous records with her Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records release of her 8th studio album, Cowboy Carter [CC]. It’s the most streamed album in one day on Spotify for 2024. CC’s industry disruption is due to its 76.13 streams.
Although the Queen has received massive pushback for not being an actual country music artist, the Bey Hive has fired back by reminding naysayers that she hails from the South. ABC News broadcasted a segment that documented her impact in the entertainment industry, highlighting her four performances at the Houston Rodeo from 2001 to 2007 (both solo and with Destiny’s Child).
Mrs. Carter’s entry into Western has brought about more attention and streams for a group of black and marginalized artists who have been ignored by the community for decades. Historically, country music is deeply rooted in African culture and black music. It is derived from bluegrass, hymns, and jug bands. Furthermore, the banjo is a musical instrument that is rooted in West African culture. A biracial musician from Greensboro, Rhiannon Giddens, who has been awarded a Grammy and Pulitzer Prize, uses a riff on the minstrel banjo for the Texas Hold’em intro. It has created a frenzy on TikTok with a line dance challenge. Moreover, Robert Randolph plays steel guitar on the emotionally charged yet epic 16 Carriages.
Manhattan Beach native Tanner Adell collaborates on Blackbiird (a remake of The Beatles), and it sounds good. She even called upon the magnificent Raye, a six-time Brit Award-winning artist, to help write Riverdance.
Overall, Beyonce is a powerful performer who continues to transcend. Her immense talent is undeniable, and regardless of whether you respect her entry into the southern secular arena, she continues to conquer.
Despite the craze surrounding Cowboy Carter, Beyonce gracefully hosted a CD signing at Tower Records in Shibuya, Japan, with her longtime bodyguard Julius, publicist Yvette Noel-Schure, and husband Jay-Z present.
Another heartfelt moment is when FAMU yodeling scholarship recipient, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and CMA performer K. Michelle tweeted a heart-felt letter bundled with a bouquet of flowers from Beyoncé. It acknowledged the former R&B diva’s transition to pop country and how both of them have had to endure harsh criticism in the male-dominated field.
To mark Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel’s 125th birthday celebration in 2024, Mother City, a curation of artworks from the Norval Foundation’s Collection will be on show at the legendary property. Punctuating The Nellie’s grand halls and public spaces, artworks through the lens of 16 artists’ nuanced practices will find a home at the hotel until October.
On the surface, Mother City is a concept that owes its name to Cape Town’s moniker as the first city settled by Europeans in South Africa, but the exhibition probes deeper. Drawing from the Norval Foundation’s extensive collection of contemporary works by some of the country’s most prominent artists, RESERVOIR founders Heinrich Groenewald and Shona van der Merwe have framed the exhibition around the multifaceted and complex notions associated with the role of the mother – particularly as a symbolic source of care. “Working with the geographical location of the Norval Foundation, the exhibition explores how these diverse and at times diasporic artists have come to be represented in the permanent collection, through an imagined symbolic connection to Cape Town – the Mother City. Notions of not only the archetypal mother but also its extended connotations of community, femininity, ancestry, and social icons can be found throughout the practices of the artists on show.”
Displayed throughout Mount Nelson’s lounge, bar, reception, conservatory and transitional spaces, this immersive collection of works spans mediums from painting, photography, and relief sculpture to tapestry and stitching. Each creator offers a unique perspective on the subject with exhibited artists including Mia Chaplin, Georgina Gratrix, Nicholas Hlobo, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, Bronwyn Katz, Bonolo Kavula, Dada Khanyisa, Kapwani Kiwanga, Zanele Muholi, Cassi Namoda, Gregory Olympio, Thania Petersen, Athi-Patra Ruga, Gerda Scheepers, Berni Searle and Brett Charles Seiler.
“It’s a great honour to share part of the Homestead Collection with guests of Mount Nelson. As a leading 20th-century South African art collection dedicated to an expanded narrative, these works speak to the hotel’s reverence for its past and its insistence on being part of the future,” says founder of the Norval Foundation, Louis Norval.
This commitment to supporting art and creativity was a perfect marriage to the goals of the Cape Town art museum, Norval Foundation. Norval Foundation was established in 2018 as a platform to champion and support African Art and artists and to develop art education in the Western Cape. Since its inception, Norval Foundation has hosted exhibitions dedicated to the works of esteemed artists, including William Kentridge, Berni Searle, Cinga Samson, Michael Armitage, Bonolo Kavula, Wim Botha, and many more.
Globally, Belmond’s part in supporting the arts, its curators, and collectors in each of its global locations has been substantial. Locally, the Pink Lady, affectionately named after her emblematic painted façade, has been a cultural cornerstone for over a century. Set in the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant inner city and backed by Table Mountain, Mount Nelson fuses its impressive heritage with contemporary relevance and a cultural calendar that celebrates the country’s creative assets.
The hotel’s partnership with Investec Cape Town Art Fair, its site-specific architectural artwork by renowned French artist Daniel Buren as part of MITICO 3.0 by Galleria Continua, and its annual Confections x Collections event, curated by Twyg, have been key to establishing and deepening The Nellie’s imaginative offerings. “Our intention at Mount Nelson is to create a welcoming and engaging space where guests can celebrate the creativity, art, and design coming from our continent and beyond,” says Tiago Sarmento, General Manager of the hotel. The addition of pieces from the Norval Foundation’s Homestead Collection can only augment this ever-evolving artistic endeavour.

Winning artists like Masahiro Yoshida, who clinched the Professional Award in the Decorate (Interior) category, presented “Pignic.” This innovative concept blends a breeder with a café, offering patrons a serene and enjoyable environment to interact with micro pigs. Marshall Harris‘s “Midnight-Cowboy Saddle” drawing, recognized as the winner in Create (Art), captivated the jury with its photorealistic depiction, seemingly ready to be placed on a horse for a ride into the sunset. Xuan Cui, recipient of the Winner in Use (Product) award for her fashion design “TZII7211,” endeavors to create garments that not only bring joy to weary adults but also evoke fond childhood memories or offer a gentle emotional and physical solace for challenging past experiences.
“Ripple,” honored with the Winner in Build (Architecture) distinction and envisioned by Takatoku Nishi, represents the captivating spontaneity of nature beyond human control. This architectural marvel captures the dynamic interplay of seasons, days, and atmospheric conditions, promising a unique experience that evolves with the passing hours. “New York 1920s: 100 Years Ago, When We Became Modern” stands as a well-funded initiative by NYIT, meticulously curating archival materials delving into various facets of life in NYC a century ago. Designed by the talented Micah Rimando, winner in Illustrate (Graphic), this project encapsulates the essence of art, literature, socio-political discourse, marginalized communities, controversial events, and the everyday experiences of New Yorkers from a bygone era. Ida Fiva Bech, recipient of the Winner in Shoot (Photo/Video) award, captivated the jury with her project delving into the theme of human disconnection from nature. Through her work, she skillfully portrays the perpetual reminder from the world that we are not separate from it.
