Summer Walker’s Atlanta Proclamation

SUMMER WALKER RECEIVES PROCLAMATION FROM ATLANTA FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY.

Atlanta Officially Crowns September 22nd Summer Walker Day.

•Announces Exclusive Vinyl For Acclaimed 2018 Debut Mixtape Last Day of Summer.

On September 21st, the City of Atlanta and the Mayor’s Office of Film, Entertainment & Nightlife presented a proclamation to Summer Walker (LVRN/Interscope Records) for her contributions to the community and one of Atlanta’s greatest success stories by officially proclaiming the Last Day of Summer, September 22nd, as Summer Walker Day in the City of Atlanta. Councilmember Andrea Boone and AMOFEN Directors Cardellia Hunter and Phillana Williams were in attendance for the presentation.

With the help of Social Xurrency, the platinum-selling singer’s altruism continues Friday, as Walker’s Last Day of Summer Small Business Activation will help small businesses within the Atlanta community. All participating businesses will be available at buyblackwomensshit.com in hopes of assisting hard-working women to succeed.

In addition, with Friday scientifically serving as the last day of summer, Summer will release an exclusive cobalt blue vinyl for her acclaimed 2018 debut mixtape, Last Day of Summer. Certified gold by the RIAA, Last Day of Summer spawned her 5X-platinum single, “Girls Need Love,” and its lauded remix featuring Drake. “Girls Need Love (Remix)” soared to No. 2 on the Hot R&B and entered the top 40 of the Hot 100. Last year, Summer released the revamped version of Last Day of Summer (Sped-Up) after the viral explosion of her sped-up single “Karma,” which created spikes in her streams.

The millions of streams it generated pushed “Karma” to platinum status, and its success sparked a full revamp of her Last Day of Summer as an entire sped-up album, Last Day of Summer (Sped Up). The project is the first sped-up album from a major recording artist and is a result of the singer listening to her devoted fanbase, who found pleasure in revisiting the classic album in a reimagined way.

Fans can pre-order the vinyl for Last Day of Summer HERE

WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE ATTICA LOCKE

Prairie View A&M University proudly announces the appointment of Attica Locke as its 2023-2024 Writer-in-Residence for the Toni Morrison Writing Program. Locke, a distinguished American fiction author and acclaimed writer-producer for television and film, will be formally introduced on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, at 11 a.m. in PVAMU’s Don K. Clark Building Auditorium.

Locke is renowned for her award-winning literary works, including “The Exile’s Lament” and her critically acclaimed debut novel, “Black Water Rising.” Locke, whose passion for literature was profoundly shaped by Toni Morrison’s timeless novel “Beloved” expressed the transformative impact of the novel on her life in an interview this year, saying, “It broke something wide open in me, showed me that literature could do things I hadn’t yet imagined.” This connection between Locke and Morrison’s legacy underscores the significance of her role as the Writer-in-Residence for the program.

Dr. Emma Joahanne Thomas-Smith, provost emerita, who oversees the Toni Morrison Writing Program at PVAMU, described the far-reaching impact of Locke’s literary contribution. “Having Attica Locke as our 2023-2024 Toni Morrison Writing Program Writer-in-Residence is a winner for our students. She is a storyteller’s storyteller and so well versed in each aspect of writing. I am especially impressed with her adaptation of fiction for television and film production.”

Toni Morrison was a prolific essayist, book editor, college professor, and the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. The writing program named in her honor was established under the visionary leadership of former President Ruth J. Simmons in honor of the esteemed writer.

Image of man created a Mr. ZIP to promote zip codes in post offices

Mr. ZIP Turns 60

The ZIP Code was launched 60 years ago as part of a program of improvements to increase postal delivery speed.
At the time, Americans were already struggling to adapt to three-digit area codes for long-distance telephone calls, so promoting the five-digit ZIP (short for Zone Improvement Plan) Code was a tough sell. To help get the word out and encourage the widespread adoption of ZIP Codes, the Post Office Department enlisted the aid of an ad agency.

These efforts included:

  • Ethel Merman singing the virtues of ZIP Codes to the tune of “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”;
  • Public service announcements in newspapers, on radio and TV, and on buses and rapid transit;
  • “ZIP Code” — a catchy, kitschy 15-minute film starring the Swingin’ Six musical group — which won a silver medal at the 1966 International Film and TV Festival for explaining the rationale behind the code; and
  • Mr. ZIP, the new code’s mascot, which worked wonders in bringing it to public attention.

The full-court press paid off: By the end of the decade, the use of ZIP Codes had become established practice.

Today, the code has expanded to ZIP+4 and its uses have spread well beyond the Postal Service. Social scientists, businesses, demographers and others use the codes to interpret, organize and disseminate data.

The Postal Service continues making positive changes that benefit the American public and business customers.

The United States Postal Service released its Second-Year Progress Report on Delivering for America (DFA), the 10-year plan to return the organization to financial sustainability and achieve service excellence while maintaining universal six-day mail delivery and expanding seven-day package delivery.

The Delivering for America plan was published March 23, 2021, to transform the Postal Service from an organization in financial and operational crisis to one that is self-sustaining and high performing. In the first two years since, the Postal Service has aggressively advanced core DFA strategies and initiatives. While much work remains to be done to address the Postal Service’s financial and operational performance, DFA has already demonstrated that the path forward is achievable, and that the organization is working to be financially self-sustaining, high performing and provide excellent service to the nation.

As the Postal Service enters the third year of the Delivering for America plan, the organization continues its focus on improving service reliability for the American public and business customers by modernizing the outmoded and aging postal network across the nation, operational stabilization, and new competitive product offerings for our customers.

GUCCI ANCORA WOMEN’S SS24

It’s a story of joy of life, of passion, of humanity, of people, of real life, of irreverent glamour, of provocation, of confidence, of simplicity, of immediate feelings and emotions, of a specific type of art, of words – words in artworks, words in pictures, words in spaces, just words. A story of richness and lust/desire, of red but also blue and green, of flash, of spontaneity, of light, of a party at the first light of day, it’s an unhidden story, one that’s proud, it is manifest and not taboo although it might look like it should be, it is completely free and filled with euphoria. It is a story of fabulous, diverse people; it’s Getty images of cool people of all ages, and it’s inclusive as in everyone is welcomed. It’s a story of movies, of my beloved Italy, of intellectuals and travels around the world but still feeling at home wherever you are. A story of objects – shiny, tactile, and cold to the touch but warm to the heart and soul, these are desirable to collect, not for a museum but to enrich everyday life. It’s a story of music and nights out of sweat, dancing, and singing. It’s a story of family, of kissing, lots and lots of kisses. It’s a story of everything, again, but this time expressed through joy. – Sabato

Greubel Forsey’s GMT BALANCIER CONVEXE via 360 MAGAZINE.

GMT BALANCIER CONVEXE

GREUBEL FORSEY REIMAGINES THE (WATCHMAKING) UNIVERSE

Could this be a return to geocentrism? With the new GMT Balancier Convexe, Greubel Forsey places the Earth back at the centre of its universe. This new GMT calibre replaces all previous GMT models and features, for the first time, its signature inclined balance wheel, as if in orbit around the Earth. A construction whose aesthetic architecture is matched only by its technical mastery and which confirms Greubel Forsey’s resolutely contemporary approach to Fine Watchmaking.

The Earth may no longer be the centre of the universe, as thought by Aristotle through Copernicus, but it is at the centre of Greubel Forsey’s new GMT Balancier Convexe. The perfect titanium sphere with its continents, seas and oceans, is one of the Atelier’s most emblematic creations. It was the centrepiece of the GMT, GMT Earth, GMT Quadruple Tourbillon and GMT Sport, some of Greubel Forsey’s greatest successes to date. Today, Greubel Forsey is dedicating a brand new calibre to the Terrestrial globe, decisively replacing its predecessors. It is the purest and most contemporary interpretation of the GMT complication ever imagined, deeply rooted in the universe of the brand as well as in Haute Horlogerie.

AN EARTHLY AMPHITHEATRE

The Earth is showcased majestically, positioned at the very heart of an amphitheatre-like construction. Flush with the sapphire crystal, almost close enough to the surface to touch, it moves in a constant 24-hour rotation, just as the Earth rotates in real life. This amphitheatre is bordered by three rings which indicate two complementary times: hours and minutes local time, as well as universal time.
The 24 time zones displaying universal time are set against a black background if the time indicated is at night, and on a white background during the day time.

Local time is indicated on the two outer rings: one for the hours on a grey satin-finished ring, and minutes on a thin black outer ring. Each time indication has its own hand with a red triangular tip filled with luminescent material. These hands move on two further rings, engraved with key words dear to the Atelier, to display GMT. Finally, an off-centre display at 10 o’clock indicates a second time zone with a blue gold hand.
For the caseback of the timepiece, Greubel Forsey opted to keep the disc with 24 time zones indicating the UTC time of the 24 reference cities, but with a rather appropriate modification: the UTC of Paris has been replaced by the city where Greubel Forsey has been established since its early days: La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

HAND FINISHING PAR EXCELLENCE

The beating heart of the timepiece, appreciated by collectors for its remarkable chronometric performance, is a spectacular sight. Once again, Greubel Forsey stuns with its level fine craftmanship. The 30° inclined balance wheel, seemingly suspended in mid-air, is held by a beautiful flat black polished and barrel polished steel balance wheel bridge on polished steel pillars. To its right, the small seconds, displayed with a blue gold hand completes the ensemble.

The titanium bridges, which serve as the æsthetic backdrop for this horological spectacle, are hand-finished with a steel brush and take on a frosted texture never before applied by Greubel Forsey. The delicate frosted surfaces catch the light and accentuate the globe, which remains the protagonist of the arena.

Finally, the inside of the case is polished so that it mirrors the escapement platform, the Terrestrial globe, and nearly every element visible on the dial side, thus adding incredible depth to this new construction.

SIGNATURE CONVEX CASE

This theatrical composition takes place within the signature convex case designed by Greubel Forsey. Made of titanium and with a diameter of 46.5mm around the bezel and 43.5mm around the caseband, it hugs the curve of the wrist perfectly. It also represents the major technical feat of achieving a movement that follows an imperceptible slope of just a few degrees. The sapphire crystal and satin-finished bezel follow the same curved geometry, which extends onto either a titanium bracelet or a textured rubber strap.

Greubel Forsey will only make 66 GMT Balancier Convexe timepieces: 22 per year between 2022 and 2024.

Limited edition brass bulb sculpture by Eddie Kurayev and Albert Akbashev auction at Sotheby's via 360 MAGAZINE.

BRIGHT IDEA

Inspired by their shared fascination with light and its role in creating a unique ambiance, founders Eddie Kurayev and Albert Akbashev have crafted a truly remarkable sculpture. “Bright Idea” takes the shape of a vintage light bulb and showcases the intricate beauty of disassembled watch movements from timepieces between 50 and 100 years old.

This limited-edition vintage-inspired piece pays homage to a bygone era when incandescent bulbs were commonplace, now replaced by LED technology. By repurposing these historical components, Berd Vay’e breathes new life into them, allowing them to be appreciated once more. The transformation marked by the government’s ban on vintage light bulbs adds an element of historical relevance to this stunning creation.

We are thrilled to announce that “Bright Idea” has been selected as the first piece to be sold at the prestigious Sotheby’s auction on June 9th—a testament to its exceptional craftsmanship and unique character. The sculpture will surely pique the interest of collectors who appreciate vintage artifacts and one-of-a-kind works of art.
