What things came into fashion through sport

As early as the 19th century, fashion was influenced by sport. Many elements of sportsmen’s clothing were later incorporated into people’s wardrobes. For example, clothing attributes such as tailcoats, top hats, breeches and gloves came into fashion through equestrian sports, which became popular at the end of the 19th century.

The first Wimbledon tournament was held in Great Britain in 1887. At that time, women played in long dresses and hats. But when tennis player Suzanne Lenglen took to the court in the 1920s wearing a pleated skirt just below the knee, a headscarf and a short-sleeved top, she sparked a real revolution not only in tennis but also in fashion. And 10 years later, the French tennis player Rene Lacoste founded his own company for the production of tennis shirts. Today, it’s a brand with a worldwide reputation, producing clothing, shoes and accessories.

Many garments also come from sports. Leggings, for example, come from yoga, jumpsuits from winter sports and T-shirts from wrestling.

Sporty style in high fashion and everyday life

In the XX century, an active lifestyle demanded appropriate clothing and many manufacturers began to rethink fashion trends. The first of the fashion designers to turn to sporty style was Coco Chanel. “I invented the tracksuit for myself; not because other women did sport, but because I did,” Chanel told her friend.

The fashion designer loved various sports – golf, skiing, sailing, hunting, equestrian sports – and was also well versed in sports fashion. In 1913, she launched a collection of sportswear for women that allowed them to move freely. The collection impressed other fashion designers who then began to pay special attention to sports style. Today, sports collections are available in almost all fashion houses in the world.

In footwear, the fashion for sneakers began in 1921 when Converse launched a special line of Chuck Taylor All-Star basketball shoes. The basketball player became a brand ambassador. He was already wearing “Converse” in 1917, when the line was simply called All-Star, but thanks to his ideas and his involvement in the advertising campaign, not only athletes but people all over the world started wearing sneakers.

How athletes can influence the popularity of fashion

Most brands gain their popularity through advertising contracts with celebrities. Today, for example, almost all famous athletes have contracts with fashion houses and major manufacturers of clothes and shoes. An army of fans worth millions is ready to buy the collections promoted by athletes, which significantly increases the brands’ revenues.

One of the most successful examples is the contract between basketball player Michael Jordan and Nike, which they signed in 1984. Nike lured Jordan with a large sum of $500,000 per year. This resulted in the Air Jordan trainers, which are still popular today and earned the former basketball player more than 1 billion dollars.

Multi-Platinum entertainer Kane Brown, releases his third studio album, Different Man, today (listen here).  The 17-track album features previously released songs “Grand,” #1 song “Like I Love Country Music,” “Whiskey Sour,” #1 hit “One Mississippi,” “Leave You Alone” and features from Blake Shelton and his wife Katelyn Brown.  The album showcases production work from Brown himself along with Dann Huff, Andrew Goldstein, Lindsay Rimes and Ilya Toshinskiy. In celebration of the release, Brown releases the music video for “Thank God,” a loving duet with his wife Katelyn Brown (watch here).

Brown has already been in full swing with promotion for the album. At the end of last month, he made history with his debut performance of his smash hit single “Grand” on the MTV VMA stage marking him as the first male country artist to hit the iconic stage (watch here).  Brown will continue his release week with a two nights on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (9/13 & 9/14). Kane’s previously announced performance on Good Morning America will be rescheduled for a later date.  Brown spoke with The New York Times for a profile and was featured in the Los Angeles Times Fall Music Preview.

Brown’s latest single, “Like I Love Country Music” reached #1 on the Country Radio charts last month. The accolade earned Brown his eighth chart-topping record on the Country Radio charts. Brown, who has garnered nearly 12 billion career streams to date, also earns his fastest rising single with “Like I Love Country Music.” Additionally, “Like I Love Country Music” topped the Australian and Canadian radio charts, marking Brown’s first 7-week run at the top of the Canadian charts.

Brown will be kicking off his global Drunk or Dreaming Tour on September 17, which will include his first touring dates to Australia and New Zealand as well as his long-awaited return to Canada, Europe and the US. Just announced earlier this week, the US leg of the tour will kick off in Grand Rapids, MI on March 16, 2023 and hit 23 US cities along the way before wrapping in Greenwood Village, CO at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre on Saturday, June 10. During the tour, Brown will perform his first solo headlining arena show at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on March 31.  Tickets for Drunk or Dreaming are on sale now. The ‘Glam Slam’ will take place Thursday, September 8 – Monday, September 12, 2022, on the Rooftop Terrace of Spring Studios in Tribeca. For the inaugural event, IMG and Spring Studios have partnered with Chase Sapphire to develop a unique program that spans both fashion and sports, combining the best of both worlds.

New Arts and Entertainment, Wine Tasting Rooms, Food and Drink

Downtown Napa, which has been dubbed The Wine Tasting Room Capital of the World, is the premier Napa Valley experience. This fall, discover new outdoor recreation, entertainment, tasting rooms, restaurants and more in wine country’s most walkable destination. Here’s what’s new in Downtown Napa this fall: 

New Outdoor Recreation 

  • Napa Valley Bike Tours has a new e-bike tour that starts and finishes from the Wine & Brews E-Bike Cruise location in Downtown Napa. The cruise includes stops at a local winery for a tasting and picnic lunch and a unique winery and brewery tasting room experience. 

New Wine Tasting Rooms: 

  • Ox & the Fox Wine Bar received its liquor license and is now serving cocktails among its existing beer and wine selection. The front of the building has also been expanded to welcome more guests in to enjoy the expanding menu. 
  • Wine Girl, a Scottsdale-based wine bar, is opening a location at 1321 First St. next to Anette’s Chocolates, making for a perfect bachelorette and girls’ holiday location in Downtown Napa.

New Shopping:

  • Maison Verbena, a San Francisco-based store, opened the doors to a new location in First Street Napa. It is a young yet dynamic business passion about innovation with a goal to inspire and bring the idea of “fashion marketing” to the US. 
  • State & First moved to a beautiful new space and updated its hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. State & First is exquisitely curated for the Napa Valley lifestyle, offering unique women’s and men’s clothing selections, jewelry and accessories that can’t be found anywhere else in the valley.
  • Color Theory recently moved to Main Street at Caymus. Color Theory carries a wide variety of name brand paints, mediums, papers and drawing utensils for artists of all skill levels. 

New Arts & Entertainment:

  • On Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., Napa Valley Music Associates will host the 2022 series of Napa Valley Guitar Festival: Yuri Liberzon.The festival, hosted by Churchill Manor, will include music by contemporary Konstantiin Vassillev whose music synthesizes several styles including jazz, Russian Folk music and contemporary western traditions. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors/students. 
  • Open Studios Napa Valley, a self-guided art discovery tour, will take place Sept. 17 to 18 and Sept. 24 to 25 from 10 a.m. to. 5 p.m. each day. Seventy local artists will showcase their work throughout Napa Valley. To view and print the Open Studios catalog and map, visit acnv.org. 
  • Napa Drunken History Tour is a walking tour around Napa that takes visitors back in time to the origins of the city of Napa and the people who founded it. The tour, which has spots available Sept. 23 to Sept. 24 and Oct. 27 to Oct. 28, includes three stops at local establishments with local microbrew, boutique wine tasting and distilled spirits tasting.
  • The CIA at Copia/American Bounty at CIA Copia presents Southwestern Cuisine with Edgar Rico. Join Edgar Rico – 2022 James Beard Award winner for Best Emerging Chef and owner/chef at Nixta Taqueria in Austin, TX – and co-owner, Sara Maranbigi, for an adventure through the cuisine and culture of the southwest Sept. 24 to Sept.  25. 
  • Uptown Theatre Napa, Downtown Napa’s ultimate destination for live entertainment, has a variety of upcoming shows this summer and fall. Headliners include “Weird Al” Yankovic with Emo Philips, UB40, Killer Queen: A Tribute to Queen and more. 
  • The Cabernet Classic returns to The Meritage Resort and Spa for the second year from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6 in Downtown Napa. This experience features over 20 expert-led tastings featuring hundreds of wines, chef-curated dining experiences and playful events among the resort’s Napa Valley vineyards.

New Food & Drink: 

  • The Meritage Resort and Spa opened The Village Bistro, a French-influenced pop-up dining experience with a wine country twist based on family style dining. The bistro features traditional French dishes in shareable plates, main courses, desserts and an extensive wine list. 
  • Osha Thai now offers lunch special menus with choice of main course and an appetizer or salad for $25 from Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can choose from spicy basil chicken, garlic pepper pork, yellow curry, pad Thai, drunken noodles, beer braised chicken or beef cashew nuts. 
  • Kitchen Door is now fully operating in its new space and has released its Pool Bar menu, served from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday, featuring delicious eats like potato bravas with smoked paprika and garlic aioli, deviled eggs with crispy pepperoni and picked red onions, beef carpaccio crushed with Himalayan truffle, chives, arugula, crispy potato, truffle aioli, and more. 
  • Napa Yard, a new beer garden located across from CIA at Copia, has opened. It features a micro distillery café, bar, wine tasting area, gardens and event space. The bar will serve cocktails from garden-to-glass Concordia spirits infused on site. 
  • Entrecôt, owned by Argentine-born proprietors Gonzalo Barrado and Maia Antonella Tesio, is now open on the Napa River in the Riverfront Complex, bringing Argentine cuisine to the Riverfront 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The menu includes tapas such as empanadas, ham and cheese croquettes, fried polenta with tomato sauce and cheeses and charcuterie with starters like gazpacho, vitello tonnato, and more. 
  • Sky & Vine, tucked on the rooftop of Archer Hotel Napa, opened its Whiskey Bar. This reservation-only experience features a 100+ list of unique and rare whiskeys. It includes a small vintage collection and rounds out with a range of approachable selections, private barrel flights, specialty cocktails, and more.

Created in 2010, the Napa Tourism Improvement District (TID) is the official destination marketing organization for Downtown Napa/City of Napa. With a mission to increase overnight visitation and improve the local economy, the Napa TID promotes nearly 45+hotels and bed and breakfast properties, premier dining, wine tasting, shopping and local entertainment. The Napa TID utilizes its website (DoNapa.com), participates in the creation of local events and develops targeted marketing programs that drive overnight stays during the off-season and mid-week occupancy throughout the year.

Last night, the world’s most influential streetwear and artistic fashion brand, Sprayground, teletransported attendees to an immersive fashion journey through past, present and future to launch its “Time Travel Collection” during their New York Fashion Week 2022 runway show, marking the company’s 12th year anniversary.

Sprayground has become a symbol of youth rebellion, an artistic fashion style, and a vehicle for creative self-expression. As part of their legacy and encapsulating this aesthetic, the “Time Travel Collection” showcased 40 exquisite looks that served as the perfect celebration of individual style and creative-imagination. During the epic showcase Sprayground exhibited their upcoming collections, including notable collaborations including cult classics and celebrated blockbusters like Avatar, The Godfather, Scarface and Sailor Moon.

In 2010, fashion designer and creative visionary David BenDavid reinvented the backpack with his emblematic design “Hello My Name Is,” creating the blueprint for what 12 years later grew into one of the most iconic street style fashion houses founded in the twenty-first century. This year, Sprayground as always pulled out all the stops with special appearances on the runway from female rapper Remy Ma, Reggaeton star Jon Z and NBA Wide Receiver, Antonio Brown

“Being back in the city that saw the birth of Sprayground during Fashion Week feels exhilarating, I’m so thankful to everyone involved and helping pull this off! This new collection was designed to push the boundaries, turn the mundane into insane, and most importantly give a platform for creative individuals to express themselves. At Sprayground we are committed to building a travel culture, starting with one backpack 12 years ago, we now design a number of carriers as well as apparel – we really do have something for everyone! Colombian rising powerhouse twins, Laura and Lucia, better known as Las Villa are releasing a fun and contagious single titled, “Amor y Sal” under Warner Music Latina. The single and its official music video are now available on all digital platforms.

“Amor y Sal” was written by Las VillaLuis Salazar and Essa Gante, and produced by Luis Salazar and Andy Clay and tells the overall story of what the process is like and the frustration one experiences when seeking true love as it can be a bit bitter and at times sweet. The lyrics for this single are not only based on a personal story but also from a spectator’s viewpoint as this situation is experienced by millions at all times.

“Amor y Sal” is a song that basically talks about love stories in general, seeing how these are formed and eventually disappear, suddenly they emerge and then they are shipwrecked.  The song talks about the frustration of realizing from the beginning that it wasn’t going to work out and that it always ends up falling apart halfway,” commented Las Villa in reference to the single.

The music video, directed by Diego Ante and shot in the city of Bogota, takes place mostly inside a train, narrating from an imaginary world the different stops which symbolize the stages that life presents us with and the people we meet during those stages.

“The video tells the story of this every day that is happening in parallel and happens to many people where we live in a constant movement and meet many people and learn different from many people, where we fall in love and fall out of love,” said Las Villa about the music video.

Recently, Las Villa were one of the main acts Spotify’s first all-female festival in Colombia, EQUAL Festival. Laura and Lucia’s return to the stage after the pandemic was epic. For their comeback they invited Luis Jimenez from Lagos to sing their smash hit “Cuerno”. Of course, “Nadita” and “Balada para Perrear” were part of their tracklist, giving an unforgettable show to their fans who did not stop singing their songs throughout the show.  

Undoubtedly, Las Villa have stolen the hearts of their fans and will continue to do so with the new music that is expected soon under Warner Music Latina.
