Brittney Griner pleads guilty to drug charges in Russia

WNBA Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner has been stuck in Russia since February of 2022. Griner was at the Sheremetyevo International Airport when officials found small units of hashish oil in her belongings. Once discovered, she was taken into custody immediately, facing up to 10 years in prison in Russia for “large-scale transportation of drugs,” though her cartridge contained less than one gram of the marijuana concentrate.

Amongst the travesty, Griner appeared in trial this month with images of her handcuffed being posted all over social media. She has pleaded guilty to her charges, seemingly in hopes of returning to the US quicker. Griner sent a handwritten letter to the President of the US Joe Biden expressing her concern and fear for her freedom. Segments of the heart wrenching letter were released to the media by Griner’s representatives.

“As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I might be here forever,” Griner expressed.

She continued to the president, stating, “I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other American Detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore. I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It kills me to know they are suffering so much right now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home.”

With no way to measure how long Griner could be held in Russia, her teammates and supporters have taken a stand to urge for her release. As a Black, LGBTQ WNBA player, many have questioned the treatment of Griner. Her coach presented this point, stating, “If it was LeBron, he’d be home, right? […] It’s a statement about the value of women. It’s a statement about the value of a Black person. It’s a statement about the value of a gay person.”

Paris, France: Citroën has revealed the new all-electric ë-C4X and the new C4X through live streamed events running simultaneously in Turkey and Denmark. The vehicles feature a unique design approach for customers seeking affordable alternatives to hatchback and SUV offerings in the mid-sized market.

“We’re excited about the opportunity presented by the New ë-C4X and C4X models as they will contribute significantly to our brand presence and sales expansion objectives for Middle East and Africa and international markets, as well as Europe. Many customers have told us they want an affordable, responsible and elegant alternative to the mass of hatchback and SUV offerings in the volume compact car segment, and this is our best interpretation of that need – a forward-looking, distinctive cross design that delivers all the comfort, technology, safety and value you expect from Citroën, but also outstanding roominess and limousine versatility with the benefit of zero-emission, all-electric power”.

The New all-electric ë-C4X and C4X models also benefit from Citroën’s new generation infotainment interface, MyCitroën Drive Plus, providing a comprehensive package for connected services.

Notably, Citroën is taking the bold step of offering only the all-electric ë-C4X model in many of its European markets where sales of electrified vehicles are increasing. With its 100 kW powertrain and 359 km WLTP range the new ë-C4X will be the only all-electric car to offer this combination of design, comfort and saloon car spaciousness in the mainstream mid-sized market. This, combined with its roomy 510-litre boot volume, makes it the ideal companion for everyday use in cities.

Customers who may prefer a traditional powertrain in International markets as well as selected European countries will have a choice of Citroën’s proven and efficient PureTech turbo-charged, direct-injection petrol engines.

The new ë-C4X and C4X models will be built exclusively in Europe for all markets at the Stellantis Villaverde manufacturing facility in Madrid, Spain, with sales commencing later in 2022.

Lids Foundation × Boys & Girls Clubs

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore joined elected officials and community leaders to break ground on the new Mace’s Lane Community Center. The state-of-art Center will be home to a one-of-a-kind, a generational project that is designed to honor the history of the African American educational experience in Cambridge, while inspiring the next generation.

The groundbreaking ceremony included guest speakers Larry Hogan, Governor of Maryland, LajanCephas, Acting Mayor, and Cambridge Commissioner, Pastor Keith Cornish, President, Mace’s Lane Community Center, Inc., Jeff Breslin, President, and CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan. Baltimore, and Nik Tatum, Chair, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore Board of Directors.

“This new community center is just one of the many important redevelopment projects happening in Cambridge, and another way that we are honoring the commitment we made eight years ago when I was first running for governor,” said, Governor Hogan. “I said then that if I was elected, the war on rural Maryland would be over, and communities that had been ignored and neglected would no longer be forgotten. I meant what I said, our administration has consistently proven that over and over again, and we are doing that once again here in Cambridge.”

The new Center is designed to foster inclusive community participation and provide an environmentally safe and friendly facility for the arts, education, recreation, celebration, and locally based human services to increase opportunities for the personal and collective growth of the Dorchester County community.

The former Mace’s Lane High School building will be repurposed and redeveloped to serve as a 16,000 square foot community center. The facility will include multiple meeting rooms to facilitate training as well as organizational meetings, a full-size gymnasium which can also be used as an auditorium for larger events such as concerts and banquets, Incubator space for local community-based programs, and a museum depicting the history of Maces Lane High School and the education of the African American community during segregation and after integration.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore is proud to partner with the Cambridge community, the Mace’s Lane Community Center, Inc., and the many alumni that are helping to bring the vision for this state-of-the-art facility to life.  We stand ready to continue our support of the Cambridge community and look forward to expanding Boys & Girls Club programs in the renovated Mace’s Lance Community Center and Boys & Girls Club.” said Jeff Breslin, President & CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore. Guests received a commemorative hat, provided by LIDS. The LIDS Foundation is a supporter of the Mace’s Lane project.

Once known as Mace’s Lane High School during times of segregation, the facility was an all-African-American high school that opened in 1952, and continued to be a segregated high school until 1969. During that time, all African-American students that lived in Dorchester County, MD were required to attend this school, until the County was forced to integrate in 1969, this would later become a junior high school until 2004. Eventually, a new middle school was built from the ground up and since then, the original Mace’s Lane High School has been abandoned and empty.

“We are preserving our rich history, inspiring our community, and empowering our youth for success,” said Tyrus Farrow, Sr. Project Manager for Mace’s Lane.

STRESS HIT THE BEREAVED SPOUSE

According to new research from Rice University, widowed individuals experiencing intense grief after the loss of their spouse experience a significant increase in body inflammation following other stressful events.

It’s a concerning finding for the research team, since body inflammation is linked to various health problems, including serious cardiovascular issues and premature death. The researchers outlined their findings in the paper “Grief Symptoms Promote Inflammation During Acute Stress Among Bereaved Spouses,” which will appear in an upcoming edition of Psychological Science.

The first author Ryan Linn Brown is a recent Ph.D. graduate in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Rice and part of the Biobehavioral Mechanisms Explaining Disparities (BMED) lab. She and her fellow researchers were interested in the change in levels of inflammatory biomarkers in widowed and deeply grief-stricken spouses before and in the two hours immediately after a stressful experience. They studied 111 adults between the ages 35 and 84 who had lost a spouse in the past year.

“I was extremely motivated to publish this work because it gives us insight into how severe grief can encourage inflammation to accumulate in the body and put widow(er)s at risk for cardiovascular disease,” Brown said. “Because we face many stressful events each day as humans, this type of response to stress in the lab means that this same process is likely happening repeatedly throughout each day or week for widows or widowers experiencing more severe grief symptoms.”

The study included a baseline blood draw followed by an experiment featuring stressful scenarios. This included an on-camera job interview with rapid-fire questioning from experiment administrators and being forced to do complicated math tasks. Study participants had their blood drawn again 45 minutes and two hours after the experiment.

On average, those who admitted experiencing intense grief following the loss of their spouse — including deep sorrow, numbness, yearning, and loss of focus — had a 19% greater increase in inflammatory biomarkers in their bloodstream after the stressful situations than those who reported less severe grief.

Chris Fagundes, the paper’s senior author and an associate professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, said the study adds to his lab’s understanding of the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying the “widowhood effect” and provides more evidence that grief directly influences the inflammatory stress response.

Additional study co-authors include Angie LeRoy, Michelle Chen, Robert Suchting, Lisa Jaremka, Jia Liu, and Cobi Heijnen. The paper is available online HERE.

Polestar rings in Nasdaq via 360 MAGAZINE

POLESTAR CONTINUES TO GROW

Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, continues to deliver on its growth promise as it progresses towards a planned listing on the Nasdaq through a proposed business combination with Gores Guggenheim, Inc. (Nasdaq: GGPI, GGPIW, and GGPIU), expected to close at the end of June 2022.

Expansion into new markets and a growing retail footprint are both driving and supporting customer demand, while the development of new models is set to propel the brand further into high-margin premium SUV segments.

Polestar launched its 25th global market in the first half of 2022, a significant increase from 10 markets in 2020. Polestar has added six new markets since the start of 2022, including UAE, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. The company also plans to launch in Israel and Italy in the second half of 2022, adding to its Middle East and European footprint. By the end of 2023, Polestar plans to be present in an aggregate of at least 30 markets globally, while continuing to evaluate new market opportunities for the future.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, says: “Selling already in 25 countries across the globe, Polestar has a unique position in the pure play EV market. We are a real company, not one based on slideshow promises. More than 55,000 Polestar cars are on the roads globally today and we are launching a stunning portfolio of three new models in just three years. These gorgeous EVs are all in advanced development stages, and we have the ability to produce great quality cars with our experienced industrial partners.”

Product expansion also continues with the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV, scheduled for its world premiere in October 2022. Polestar 3 marks the company’s first product for the attractive, high-growth SUV market. This will be followed by the Polestar 4 electric SUV coupe, and the Polestar 5 electric 4-door GT.

Polestar 4 is expected to be launched in 2023 and enters one of the most competitive market segments in terms of demand, performance and design.

Polestar 5 is also in advanced stages of development and planned to be launched in 2024. A prototype will be shown in public for the first time at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed from 23 to 26 June 2022.

Mike Whittington, Head of Global Sales at Polestar, adds: “It’s exciting for the whole team to experience this growing momentum in our business. Our order intake is at record levels and currently represents an annualized run-rate of over 75,000 vehicles, putting us in a strong position as the production landscape normalizes. In addition, with both Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 on the horizon, we are set to play a leading role in the electrification of lucrative and sizeable premium SUV segments. With a 2025 production capacity for these two EVs expected above 160,000 vehicles per year, we will have the ability to scale quickly and attract new customers to the brand.”

Polestar now has close to 130 retail locations open around the globe and expects to have 160 locations open by the end of 2022. More Polestar Spaces and Destinations are planned in existing and new markets, in cities including London, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Reykjavík, Vancouver, Austin, Shenzhen, and others.

GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT

GLAAD × GEORGE MICHAEL

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, along with Sony Music Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing, presented a new clip from the upcoming autobiographical feature documentary GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUTAdditionally, GLAAD.org has posted an in-depth interview with the co-director and producer of the film, George Michael’s songwriting partner and long-time collaborator, David Austin. View the clip and the interview HERE.

David Austin said, “We are very proud to Partner with GLAAD – George was proud of his sexuality and campaigned throughout his life for everyone to have the freedom to be who they wanted to be and love who they wanted to love.”

Anthony Allen Ramos, Vice President of Communications & Talent of GLAAD, said, “Pride Month is a perfect opportunity to remember the trailblazing legacy of George Michael within the music industry and beyond. The release of GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT will help audiences learn so much about the performer’s extraordinary life. It is truly special to see the film’s never before seen footage and personal stories about his touching love story with Anselmo Feleppa, who unfortunately left us far too early.”

A poignant and moving tribute to the legacy of one of Britain’s greatest performers, in his final work George Michael reclaims the narrative of his career, personal life, and controversies. Throughout the film, Michael reveals openly and honestly the two distinct sides of his life: his very public music career and his private personal life that cameras never truly saw. Michael was heavily involved in and dedicated to the making of this documentary before his tragic passing in 2016, making GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT an incredibly special posthumous release and a poignant and moving tribute to his legacy.

Narrated by the late Grammy® Award winner himself, GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT delves into the turbulent period after “Faith” leading up to, during, and after the making of Michael’s “Listen Without Prejudice: Vol 1” album in 1990. At this pivotal time, Michael can fight for his artistic freedom and lead the way for others. As the film clip posted at GLAAD beautifully illustrates, it was at this period of his life when Michael meets his first real love, Anselmo Feleppa, and nothing is ever the same for him. The moving film later explores how the legendary singer navigates both the heartbreak of Anselmo’s early tragic passing and the devastating loss of his mother.

The documentary features numerous celebrities, with contributors including Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John, Ricky Gervais, Nile Rogers, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Liam Gallagher, Mary J. Blige, Jean-Paul Gaultier, James Corden, Tony Bennett, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Tatjana Patitz.

GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT is produced by Big Geoff Overseas Limited in conjunction with Sony Music Entertainment and distributed theatrically worldwide by Trafalgar Releasing.

In celebration of George Michael’s iconic album Older, Sony Music will release a deluxe, limited-edition box set in July. The set will also be available in digital/CD/2LP formats. Older was George’s third album as a solo artist and would see him experimenting with new musical styles and expanding his artistic horizons. Hailed by critics as a triumph, it told the story of an extraordinary period in the life of the man who wrote, recorded, and produced it, as he journeyed through one of the most turbulent periods of his professional and personal life.

SOPHIE POWERS – SEE ME!!

Hot on the heels of her recent debut EP Red In Revenge, 17 year old hyper-punk pop artist Sophie Powers has shared a music video for the track “See Me!!” Sophie remains as hands-on as ever, acting as the creative director and clothing designer for the new video. Fans can watch the music video for “See Me!!” now here.

Filming this video was a super fun project for me! I designed an outfit and creative directed it with the intention of embodying a 90s MTV blink-182 or Avril lavinge style music video,” shares Sophie“Of course, I wanted my own modern twist and I credit Cayenne for editing the video with me to look exactly like that. It’s very nostalgic but still modern and very chaotic! I literally got to smash a car and spray paint billboards for this. It was one of the most fun music videos I filmed.

Spending the last year cultivating a unique blend of punk and hyper pop, 17-year-old star Sophie Powers recently released her highly anticipated debut EP Red in Revenge, available today via Set Records. Brimming with the spellbinding energy of her unique “hyper-punk” hybrid and unique artistic vision, the EP follows Sophie’s adolescent exploits; from ending relationships and friendships, to finding your confidence and dealing with the challenges growing up.

See Me” is originally found on Sophie’s new debut EP Red In Revenge. The seven song collection includes stellar collaborations including “1 Thing” with Kellin Quinn, which continued Sophie’s on-going conversation surrounding youth mental health; rock anthem “Greed,” featuring fast-rising alternative singer/rapper DE’ WAYNE; and “Clearview” which features tour mate NOAHFINNCE. Her recent single “U Love It” featuring rapper $atori Zoom laminated her unique hyper-punk genre. In addition to fan favourite “Life Goes On!!,” the EP featured two new tracks, “See Me!!” and “Break Up On The Weekend.”

Fans can stream Red In Revenge now at https://sophiepowers.lnk.tt/RIRIB

At just 17 years old, Sophie Powers is a bold voice beyond her years. She understands the unique pressures of modern girlhood and uses her experience to write unfiltered, devil-may-care anthems about the ups and downs of being yourself. One minute she’s confident and cool, with the sneering attitude of a punk rock front woman, and the next she’s vulnerable and raw, channeling the loneliness of contemporary life in a stirring ballad. Combining the crunchy sound of punk with today’s hip-hop and pop, Powers is the sound of the future.

With over 2.5 million streams since her debut “Loney Army” in 2021, Sophie has found her music on popular editorial playlists such as SALT, the cover of New Punk Tracks, Punks Not Dead, It’s a Bop, Rock Favorites, Punk Unleashed, and many others. Her recent collaboration with Kellin Quinn on “1 Thing” continued Sophie’s on-going conversation surrounding youth mental health, while her recent track “Life Goes On!!” reminds her peers the importance of moving on from heartbreak. Sophie has alos recently teamed up with fast-rising alternative singer/rapper DE’WAYNE on single “Greed,” a rock anthem focused on the destructive results that come from one of the most deadly sins of all. Most recently, Sophie has collabed with online sensation NOAHFINNCE on the fast-paced “Clearview“. Quickly making a name for herself, Sophie has received praise from the likes of The FADER, American Songwriter, Alternative Press, The Noise, Exclaim and CelebMix for her unfiltered and uncompromising voice.
