Weedmaps Commercial

WM Technology, Inc. (“WM Technology” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: MAPS) and Weedmaps, the company’s leading commerce-driven marketplace and premier destination for cannabis consumers, debuted a digital commercial spot timed to television’s most-watched event of the year, which addresses the current advertising restrictions imposed on legal cannabis businesses and brands for marketing their products and services.

Weedmaps’ digital ad personifies cannabis as a character named Brock Ollie. Resembling a head of broccoli, the vegetable emoji commonly used as a visual representation of cannabis in marketing, the 30-second spot provides viewers with insight into a day in the life of Brock Ollie, whose superfood identity is up in smoke as he is repeatedly mistaken for cannabis. The advertisement is a humoristic take on the challenges imposed on the broader industry, which include social media censorship and a lack of consistent advertising regulations, thus restricting cannabis-related spots during nationally televised events, like the big game. Brock Ollie shines a light on the marketing hurdles that continue to impede industry growth and consumer education as well as make space for the existing stigma associated with cannabis to thrive.

“Despite three quarters of the country having legalized cannabis and the bipartisan enthusiasm we continue to see in support for change at the federal level, the industry continues to face roadblocks that inhibit competition in the legal market and stifle opportunities to educate,” said Chris Beals, chief executive officer of Weedmaps. “There’s an irony in the fact that the biggest night for advertising will feature an array of consumer brands in regulated industries, from beverage alcohol to sports betting, yet legal cannabis retailers, brands, and businesses have been boxed out.”

Although acceptance around cannabis consumption continues to grow, with nearly three out of every four (72%1) cannabis consumers saying that everyone or almost everyone knows they consume cannabis, fewer than half (49%2) of cannabis consumers say they are experts or proficient when it comes to cannabis knowledge. Despite consumer appetite and demand for more information, industry players continue to face roadblocks as they navigate not only how to reach consumers, but also how to empower them to make informed purchasing decisions.

“Advertising restrictions are simply one part of a much larger issue,” Beals continued. “Objective and reliable information about cannabis is integral to the sustained growth of this industry. The deficiency of such information and the current limitations that hinder cannabis education continue to negatively impact other areas, such as medical research, and it’s time we begin to address them.”

Weedmaps’ ad encourages viewers to consider why it’s necessary for the cannabis plant to be replaced with items such as broccoli, trees, maple leaves, clouds, and other references in order to navigate the restrictions encountered in the marketing and advertising space. The message is best summarized by the call to action at the end of the spot; “Cannabis is here. Let’s talk about it.”

Athletes Who Turned to Politics

To be a successful politician, you do not always need a political science degree or knowing anything about public policy. In most cases, name recognition and popularity are the main deciding factors on any ballots filled with numerous names and titles. A wide range of athletes has won elections as serious competitors, taking election betting to a whole new level. With that in mind, here are some of the athletes who turned to politics:

Dave Bing

Dave Bing spent a total of twelve seasons in the National Basketball Association as a renowned point guard for the Boston Celtics, Washington Bullets, and Detroit Pistons between 1966 and 1978. Dave was a seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star as well as a one-time MVP between 1974 and 1976. In 1990, Dave Bing was inducted into the popular Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

After retiring from the National Basketball Association, Dave ran for the Mayor of Detroit position in 2009. He managed to outshine Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. He was re-elected in November 2009. Dave Bing served as the Detroit Mayor for four years.

Walter Johnson

Walter Johnson was a pitcher for the Washington Senators between 1907 and 1927. Under his name, he managed to play a total of 531 complete matches, amassing 417 wins. This ranks Walter Johnson 2nd and 5th on the list of all-time stars.

Also, Walter Johnson posted 110 shutouts that stand as an MLB record. Between 1913 and 1924, he won AL MVP. In 1938, Walter Johnson won a very competitive election to become one of the most celebrated Montgomery County commissioners in Maryland.

Bill Bradley

Bill Bradley is a former professional basketball player. He played as a small forward as well as a shooting guard. Bill Bradley made the All-Star team in 1973 and helped his team to win the NBA championship between 1970 and 1973. After retiring from sports, Bill served 3 terms as a senator from New Jersey. In 2000, he unsuccessfully ran in the primaries for the president using the Democratic Party.

Jim Bunning

With a 17-year MLB career, Jim Bunning has played for five teams. As a player, he has won a total of 224 matches and struck out more than 2,855 batters between 1955 and 1971. His name made it to the nine All-Star teams. He pitched two no-hitters in 1964.

In 1996, Jim made the Baseball Hall of Fame through the Veterans Committee vote. Jim Bunning decided to become a politician in 1980, serving as a member of the senate of Kentucky from 1980 to 1984. From 1987 to 1999, Jim Bunning was in Kentucky’s House of Representatives. He was again a senator from Kentucky between 1999 and 2011.

Ben Nighthorse Campbell

When he was in college, Ben Nighthorse Campbell was an active member of the San Jose State team that was managed by Yosh Uchida. After returning from Olympic Games, Ben Campbell worked as an assistant sheriff in Sacramento County. Additionally, he was the manager for the U.S.A National Judo Team. In November 1982, Ben Nighthorse Campbell was nominated to the Colorado State Legislature through the Democratic Party.

After servicing two terms, Ben was voted as one of the ten best legislators in 1986. In the same year, Campbell was elected in 1986 to the U.S.A House of Representatives, overpowering incumbent Congressman Mike Strang. In 1992, Ben won a three-way Democratic primary with Josie Heath, the Boulder County Commissioner, and Richard Lamm, the former three-term governor. He also served as the chair of the SIAC, Senate Indian Affairs Committee between 2003 and 2005.

Terry Dehere

Terry Dehere was known as the former no. 13 pick in the NBA Draft in 1993. While playing for the Clippers, Grizzlies, and Kings from 1993 and 1999, he was one of the best shooting guards. He completed his career playing in the NBA Development League and Euro League. He joined the world of politics in 2001 in New Jersey when he became a competitive candidate for the Jersey City municipal seat. From 2007 to 2010, he served on the Board of Education in Jersey City.

Napoleon Harris

Napoleon Harris is a former NFL player. He played as a linebacker for different teams, including the Chiefs, Vikings, and raiders. Harris made the second team All-Huge Ten twice in 2000 as well as 2001. Just a few years after a successful football career, Napoleon Harris became a senator in Illinois, and that was in 2013 when Barack Obama was the president of the U.S.A.

The Four Essentials To Get Ready For An Emergency

Weather has been so crazy lately that it is a good idea to be ready for anything. Cold snaps have caused millions to go without power in a usually hot climate like Texas, for example. Add the higher frequency of hurricanes to the East Coast and almost yearly wildfires to the West Coast and it becomes clear that preparedness right now is essential.

There are a lot of obvious ways to be ready such as having a generator like Bluetti’s new EP500 to keep the lights on. Those are great to have but there are a lot of other things that should be in place to help you get through a prolonged power outage.

In this article, I will go over a few things that you should be doing when there appears to be strange weather coming to your area soon.

1 – Emergency preparedness kit

Well before a disaster strikes you should have an emergency preparedness kit set up and ready to go. It should be in an easy to reach place and be completely self contained so you can grab it and get at a moment’s notice.

It’s one thing for the lights to go out and be without power for an extended period of time. It is quite another when disaster strikes in the form of flood or wildfire where seconds count.

In a big duffel bag, put together some essentials like warm clothes, bandages, a knife, scissors, and flashlights with batteries. These are things that you may need if you get caught out of the house but can also help if you are stuck inside. A separate first aid kit is also a good idea.

2 – Have a weather radio

Don’t rely on your smartphone if there is a weather disaster as you may not get any signal. This could leave you unprepared and without a plan because you don’t know what is happening around you.

Instead, have a weather radio that will work in almost any extreme condition. Check it occasionally to make sure that it’s working.

3 – Have plenty of gas in the car

If there is time to head out to the gas station if you see that a major storm is incoming then do so and fill your car with gas. You should also bring a can to fill up in case your car gets stuck somewhere when you are trying to get away.

Often in a blizzard, cars get stuck on the highway because they run out of gas. Having some extra will help you avoid that situation.

4 – Stock up on non perishables

Having canned and dried food is going to help you get through some tough times. If you are stuck in the house with no way to get fresh food then these goods will tide you over in the meantime.

You could even have some MRE (meals ready to eat) just in case as they provide you with a balanced meal and plenty of nutrients.

McLaren Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S

McLaren Special Operations’ brand new, highly exclusive design model is here – the Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S. The new 720S commission standard comes produced in a mere cycle of just three cars, making it a luxurious, rare find.

The Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S takes inspiration from the McLaren Formula 1 Driver, Daniel Ricciardo himself. The commissioned sports car was produced in a joint venture with the McLaren Sydney and corresponding Melbourne retailers.

George Biggs, the Commercial Executive Director of McLaren Automotive, raved about the uniqueness of the 720S, stating, “We’re delighted to see the first of this exclusive series arrive in Australia, as at home on the tarmac around Albert Park as its namesake Daniel Ricciardo. Complete with the Australian flag adorning the front haunches, this special edition model is the perfect celebration of our Perth-born racer – we’re excited to see it out on Australian roads.”

The creation of the 720S’ operates as a celebration of Ricciardo and his prized individualism. Ricciardo spoke on the experience of driving for McLaren, saying, “One of the great privileges of driving for McLaren is getting behind the wheel of many of the marque’s exhilarating supercars and while each offers something unique, the 720S is the absolute benchmark.”

Other notable Ricciardo racing characteristics consist of the Carbon Fibre sills engraved with his signature, ‘One of Three’ devotion plates and his racing number “3” stamped onto the 720S dihedral doors.

The Richest Under 30: Sam Bankman-Fried

29-year-old Sam Bankman-Fried has made his mark in the world of crypto, rising to prosperity in such a short period of time as comparable to that of Austin Russell’s Luminar. But how exactly did he do it?

Sam Bankman-Friend is the son of two Stanford Law School professors who graduated with a degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2014. Following his graduation from university, Sam worked for Jane Street trading ETFs from 2014 to 2017.

He created his first liquid crypto market business in 2017, more commonly known as Alameda Research.

In an interview with Forbes, he discussed the purpose behind the company, stating, “We saw that crypto was exhibiting all the signs that there would be a lot of demand for liquidity but with very little liquidity available. Everyone on the street was talking about crypto during that time.

“We were seeing huge price movements and inflows which clearly pointed to a lot of people from many different countries trying to buy many different varieties of crypto currencies using different acquisition methods. Despite how big it had become, it still had only been a few months. This meant that there had not been enough time for most of the buyers globally to onboard into the crypto ecosystem.”

Then, in April of 2019, Sam co-founded FTX, the cryptocurrency essentially “built by traders, for traders.”

FTX is primarily used by consumers to trade spot, futures, stock, leverage tokens and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTS). The objective of FTX is “to develop a platform robust enough for professional trading firms and intuitive enough for first-time users.”

In 2021 alone, FTX brought in $900 million from companies like Coinbase Ventures and Softbank, attributable to an $18 billion estimate, following another $25 billion valuation in October.

This success amounts to how Sam was able to make the Forbes 30 Under 30 Hall of Fame, naming him the wealthiest person in the world under 30. His net worth as of February 5, 2022, sits at $24.5 billion.

Portions of this revenue has been flowed into marketing for the company, as the FTX serves as “the official cryptocurrency exchange of the MLB.” FTX was noticeably seen throughout the World Series in signs, commercials and even patches on the umpires’ uniforms.

The company, too, houses the Miami Heat as the play in the FTX Arena. The rise of Sam’s business has been exponential, so much that he is richest person to have obtained wealth so rapidly behind Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.

What does the richest person under 30 plan to do with all this money?

Well, Sam prides himself on being a believer of “effective altruism,” a practice that involves making large amounts money to, in return, be donated back to boost one’s own influence.

One of his primary donations went towards the push for the removal of former US President Donald Trump from office. Sam donated a whopping $5.2 million to the Joe Biden campaign, which was the second greatest donation to the campaign following past New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

FTX Foundation contributes 1% of all net fees to active organizations around the world, while Sam himself has donated 0.1% of his own to issues surrounding voter registration, global poverty relief and artificial intelligence security.

Winnetka Bowling League – pulp

Winnetka Bowling League debuted their hot fourth EP pulp via RCA Records on Friday February 4. The EP consists of new track fiimy (fuck it, i misss you) with Demi Lovato, as well as a few separate pre-released tracks. Listen and stream pulp HERE, and catch the full tracklist below.

Both Winnetka Bowling League and Demi Lovato came together when Demi got into touch with head singer Matthew Koma. He posted a short video of the track onto the popular platform of TikTok, where Demi was drawn to the song.

Matthew raves about the inspiration behind fiimy (fuck it, i misss you), saying ““fiimy” is about running into an ex for the first time since a break up and the rush of mixed feelings that ad target you. There’s wondering if you even know that person anymore and there’s reckoning with your own “did i fuck up a good thing”. When Demi heard the lyrics, I think they reminded them of their own version of that experience…so it was really cool to hear them come with a verse framing how that story was told in their world. It takes dismissing a lot of pride to admit to yourself you miss someone.”

Demi spoke on their collaboration on the track, stating, “Winnetka Bowling League has such a unique sound, and I am excited to be on this record with them. If these times taught us anything it’s the power of human connection and missing someone, and I think this song speaks to that in a very honest and relevant way.”

The new EP pulp was written and produced by Matthew, and comes after their accomplished 2020 EP Congratulations.

Matthew talks about pulp, asserting, “Writing songs feels nauseatingly self-important and talking about writing songs is worse than a writer’s camp. But alas, I wrote most of the songs for the new EP in New York and felt panicked for 2 months that I was only capable of pure shit. I grew up in NY but I’ve spent the last 11 years in Los Angeles and sometimes the mentality here makes you forget about doing stuff you actually love. Being back in New York sort of sparked all these memories of being a kid recording terrible demos on ACID (the recording program, not the drug, unfortunately). And that headspace got me thinking about things and people I haven’t thought about for a long time. Usually I’m arm wrestling myself to write something about my current circumstance that’s relatable to more than my three friends who like quarantine as much as I do. But there was this shift in NY and I started writing about people and feelings I hadn’t visited in a while. Time grants you kinder eyes and with songs like ”barcelona” and “fiimy” I got to re-explore those relationships from a helicopter’s view and see it a little differently. “pulp” was about this really odd memory that came back to me one day when I walked by Port Authority and smelled hot pretzels. It made sense to call the EP “pulp” because every song was born from some specific snapshot detail that wasn’t at all the main juice (lol). I usually like my own music for 2-3 months after making it then I’m paralyzingly humiliated. I wrote this on 4/22/21 – use that information accordingly.”

This spring we see Winnetka Bowling League heading out on a series of shows while backing CHVRCHES on their practically sold-out UK Screen Violence Tour. To access more information on the tour and to get your own tickets in Newcastle and Birmingham, visit HERE. See tour dates below.

About Matthew Koma and Winnetka Bowling League

Head artist in charge, Matthew Koma was raised in New Jersey and became a critically acclaimed performer, songwriter and producer who has worked for the likes of Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Keith Urban, Shania Twain and Kelly Clarkson. The beginnings of Winnetka Bowling League came in 2018 when Matthew, his brother Kris Mazzarisi and Sam Beresford joined him to release their self-titled EP. They soon released two more Eps, Cloudy with a Chance of Sun in 2019 and Congratulations in 2020, all showcasing impeccable songwriting paired with memorable lyrics. V Magazine proclaimed, “Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Matthew Koma…[as] raw and honest, possessing a dry sense of humor that is reflected in both his songs and his mannerisms…[Winnetka Bowling League is] the perfect pairing of deep lyrical content and alternative rock melodies.”
