Bad With Phones – Refrigerator

Today, South East London’s Bad With Phones shares his new track, “Refrigerator,” alongside a mesmerizing visualizer, out now on Don”t Sleep. The Deptford-bred creator, known as Manny to his friends, received instant support for his debut track “Needles” from notable tastemakers like Complex who described it as “such a wonderfully odd introduction” to the artist. In 2020, he released the highly praised single “ON1” which garnered over 1.4M streams on Spotify alone.

Hot on the heels of his greatly-received track “Ghost,” Bad With Phones is back today with his next installment. Opening with a nod to the legend herself, Rihanna, “Refrigerator” is an icy and subdued but sensual single. In Manny’s own words: “I heard the beat and it sounded like an anthem and made me feel like a cold motherfucker hence the title I also recorded it with the mic in my Refrigerator.”

Manny is a man about town. An ex-hacker, photographer, space-enthusiast, and producer, there’s nothing deemed too big or small for him to sink his teeth into. Like many good stories, Bad With Phones’ begins in a small black church.

Manny’s first attraction to music came after being drawn to the bass guitar, which he discovered through his pastor father’s church. He started playing in the church band where he would secretly play secular R&B riffs in the middle of church proceedings for his own amusement, sparking his rebellious counterculture spirit. Inspired by the likes of Bootsy Collins, with vocals that bring Andre 3000 to mind, Bad With Phones found inspiration from black artists who were celebrated for going against the grain.

Attending Westminster University with classmates Michael Kiwanuka and Paolo Nutini, he developed his knowledge, songwriting skills, and musical performance there. A stint in Berlin would later introduce him to the world of psychedelics, which became a source of spirituality and the foundations for his own music. Bad With Phones is signed to Don’t Sleep, a new London-based music venture with the mantra to support creators who are pushing culture forward and Manny’s honest lyrics paired with his warm, intimate style are destined for great things.

Jordan Hollywood – Pleasures

Florida rapper, singer, producer, and hitmaking CEO Jordan Hollywood unleashes “Pleasures” a new single and music video out now via Quality Control Music/Motown Records. Listen HERE and watch the video HERE. The song paves the way for his upcoming album, Only The Paranoid Survive, coming soon.

On the track, a hypnotic beat grates up against his intent flow. His nimble rhymes give way to a confessional chorus, “I wake up everyday. I tell my son that I love himߪI miss my mom so much I wish that I could hug you.” In the accompanying visual, a psychotherapist reminds Jordan, Only The Paranoid Survive, before he raps from the couch. As stacks fly, he ends up in a literal battle of tug-of-war before facing off against an entire tactical team.

“Pleasures” follows his energized summer banger “The Ugly Song” a collaboration with producer legend Timbaland who told Jordan “You really took it there. Lyrically, video style, concept. I just wanna be the added piece to the puzzle.” ThPle record received acclaim from NME, REVOLT, and more, XXL named it among, “The 13 Best New Songs This Week,” and HotNewHipHop raved, “Jordan Hollywood has his hands on a summer smash.”

About Jordan Hollywood

Jordan Hollywood believes paranoia is integral to his success. “I think being paranoid is healthy,” says the Florida native. “Overthinking certain situations can reduce the losses you take in life.” It’s difficult to argue with the versatile artist, producer, CEO, and hustler. His singular ability to blend witty punchlines, vulnerable verses, and melodic croons into captivating rap/R&B/pop hybrids has resonated with his growing fanbase for years. After a stint in his youth writing for fellow Broward County artist Jason Derulo, Hollywood released a successful independent debut Sorry for This in 2016 and then signed with Quality Control Music for 2018’s FINALLY!. The whole way, he’s held to his ever-skeptical mentality, which has now afforded him the space and close-knit creative circle to create his most honest and mature album to date the forthcoming Only the Paranoid Survive. The album is a document of Hollywood’s growth as he perfects the art of balancing family, loyalty, and financial gains. Only the Paranoid Survive is a product of the countless hours Hollywood spent holed up in his home studio speaking to the microphone about everything from the pressures and anxieties of the unknown, new fatherhood, and avoiding people who he doesn’t trust.  The emotions he spills don’t feel born of negativity, but of self-preservation through his worries, he’s learning how to thrive.

Interview with Melissa Snover

Everyone loves good vitamin gummies, but what if there was a way to customize them? That’s the idea behind Nourished, led by Melissa Snover, an entrepreneur and top UK female entrepreneur according to Business Leader. I had the opportunity to interview Snover about her career and Nourished.

  1. How did you get into 3D modelling and nutrition?

I founded my first company when I was 23 and have been developing innovative products to bring to the consumer market ever since. When running a gummy candy business called Goody Good Stuff, I became frustrated by the limitations of mainstream manufacturing and in 2015 started looking into 3D printing technology to create bespoke products on demand. This led me to launch Magic Candy Factory which 3D printed customized confectionery in retail outlets, amusement parks and private events – depending on the customer’s requirements. It was this technology that gave me the inspiration and foundation to create Nourished and personalize the way we take vitamins and make our nutrition regimes more enjoyable, convenient, and effective.

  1. What are the benefits of personalized gummies?

Many of the vitamins made using traditional manufacturing methods can be largely ineffective by the time they reach the consumer. They often come from lengthy supply chains, are sat in a warehouse or on a store shelf for months and most importantly – are not produced with the individual’s needs in mind. At Nourished we combine 7 different superfoods, nutrients, and vitamins into one delicious and sugar free gummy, which are totally bespoke to the end user. We 3D print each stack on demand to ensure optimum efficacy and can change the customer’s customized blend each month as their goals and lifestyle also change.

  1. How did you develop the idea behind Nourished?

I have been an avid consumer of supplements since my 20s and used to carry around with me a large transparent bag of various supplements and vitamins, and accidentally dropped it on the airport floor in security. Crawling round in my suit and heels picking them, I thought there must be a better way to do this and then I thought, well I have a 3D printing food business, maybe I can do it?

From there I sought to find a way to simplify the way we take vitamins and make the combinations 100% customized to the consumer.

  1. How did you feel about being included in Business Leader’s list of Top UK Female Entrepreneurs to Look Out for?

It was a huge honor to be recognized amongst such inspiring and impressive peers, and I am extremely grateful to Business Leader for celebrating female entrepreneurship. I am a passionate and proactive supporter of women in business, so this is very close to my heart, and I was delighted to involved.

  1. Why use the personalized packaging?

Personalization is at the heart of everything we do at Nourished, and we didn’t want to stop at our packaging! Each of our individual wrappers are printed with the name of the customer, as well as being 100% plastic free and home compostable in just 32 weeks!

  1. How important are visuals when it comes to Nourished products?

Our Nourished stacks not only taste amazing, but they also look beautiful as the 7 layers of active ingredients each come in a different, vibrant color. Our mission at Nourished is to change the way people think about nutrition, and this means upgrading from popping pills and choking back on tablets each day. Our 3D printed vitamin gummies are the perfect visualization of what the future of nutrition can look like.

  1. Why should people choose Nourished?

At Nourished we believe that of all the things we personalize – our health should take priority. We use only the highest quality ingredients and pioneering manufacturing methods to ensure our customers receive truly bespoke nutrition, with the highest impact possible. All our ingredients are vegan, GMO free, sugar free and free from all major allergens and our packaging is 100% plastic free; meaning Nourished is as good for the Earth as it is for our customers!

  1. Do you have plans to release new products in the future?

We are constantly launching new active ingredients into our product range and optimizing our technology to ensure we stay at the forefront of personalized nutrition. We are also currently developing a personalized protein range and are planning on breaking into the pet market next year!

Eleven Foods to Stimulate Creativity in the Brain

Are you seeking a way to supercharge your imagination? Why don’t you start with your dinner plate?

Certain meals contain the ideal combination of nutrients to help your neurons do their jobs well. What should you put on your plate? Chow down on these 11 foods that stimulate creativity in your brain.

1. Cruciferous Vegetables

Did you know that the bacteria in your teeth can travel to your brain, where it may hinder your creativity and increase your Alzheimer’s risk? Scientists discovered a species of bacteria called Porphyromonas gingivalis could travel to this organ, releasing enzymes called gingipains that can destroy nerve cells. This destruction leads to memory loss and, eventually, disease.

However, what if you don’t always have a toothbrush or time to use one after meals? The solution is to pack some carrots and cauliflower along with your lunch and eat it after your sandwich. The rough, fibrous surfaces scrub away dirt and debris from tooth surfaces, decreasing the food source your oral bacteria need to thrive.

2. Nuts

Depression can wreak havoc on your creativity. One way to reignite your spark is by eating foods high in the minerals zinc, selenium, and magnesium. Research published by the National Institutes of Health suggests sufficient intake can alleviate this condition as effectively as antidepressants, especially among individuals with an underlying deficiency.

Where do you find these substances? One plant-based source comes from nuts. A single Brazil nut contains your full day’s recommended daily allowance of selenium alone — you must use care not to eat too many. Almonds, cashews, walnuts, and pecans are also excellent snacks.

3. Seeds

Another rich source of zinc, selenium, and magnesium lies in seeds. Fortunately, these tiny wonders are among the most versatile foods, making it a snap to add them to your diet.

A sprinkle of sunflower seeds or pepitas brings a pleasant nutty crunch to salads. They’re far more nourishing and satisfying than croutons made with white flour. Chia and flax seeds are excellent plant-based sources of omega-3s along with minerals, so add a liberal handful to anything from stir-frys to soups.

4. Seafood

Have you ever tried to come up with an engaging advertising slogan or even pen the next line of an essay when your temples pound and kaleidoscopes of migraine yuckiness dance before your eyes? How did that work out for you? Probably not well.

Seafood can help stimulate creativity in your brain by running interference against the pain that inhibits imaginative thought. Fish and crustaceans are high in riboflavin or vitamin B2. Research published by MedlinePlus indicates that regular intake of this nutrient can reduce your number of migraine headaches by two attacks a month. If your attacks last an average of two to three days, you reclaim up to six days out of every 30. It also reduces the severity when you do get hit.

Another way that increasing your seafood intake stimulates creativity is by lowering your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, preserving the neural channels that allow for rational thought. Sufficient intake of the DHA and EPA in fatty fish promotes brain growth in infants and children and may boost cognitive brainpower in adult women.

Omega-3s also help fight depression, which can stifle creativity. Why not make like the Catholics and make fish Friday a tradition, along with some mackerel on meatless Monday to meet your intake requirement?

5. Kale

Kale is an excellent plant-based source of B vitamins, including riboflavin. Plus, this versatile veggie makes an interesting alternative to tortillas when making wraps. Create a speedy lunch in seconds by adding a slice or two of lean protein like turkey, some cheese, and a few tomato or red pepper slices to a leaf and rolling it. Add a dash of oil and vinegar and some salt and pepper, and it’s like eating a sandwich without the white bread.

You can also braise kale and serve it as a side dish. The only people who should use caution with this veggie are those prone to kidney stones or taking blood thinners — check with your doctor or dietitian to be sure.

6. Green Tea

You might reach for coffee for a caffeine injection to supercharge your creativity when the afternoon doldrums strike. However, opting for a latte could keep you awake into the wee hours, disrupting your sleep patterns and giving you an even worse time concentrating.

While green tea does contain caffeine, it’s a mild dose — delivering a jolt of only 96 mg instead of 400. Therefore, you might do better busting the afternoon slump with this substance, as you’ll feel less jittery at night.

7. Curry

One reason why you might struggle to stir your creative juices has to do with inflammation. This condition often brings with it more than its fair share of distracting aches and pains.

Turmeric contains curcumin, one of the most potent anti-inflammatories you can find. It gets even more powerful when you add black pepper. A traditional Indian curry contains both substances in droves, so enjoy.

8. Quinoa

You know how the commercial tagline goes: you’re not yourself when you’re hungry. You’re probably not very creative, either.

Quinoa will fill you with lasting energy for much longer than a candy bar. The fiber in this ancient grain keeps tummy rumbles from distracting your concentration. Best of all, it’s safe for many people with celiac disease, although those who are particularly sensitive might find that the proteins are similar enough to cause trouble.

9. Garlic

Could that slice of pizza supercharge your creativity? Perhaps if it comes with a garlicky crust.

Garlic contains allicin, a compound this root herb emits when crushed or chopped. This substance can help lower your blood pressure, which is helpful if stress impacts your creative power. It may also ease any distracting muscle soreness from your last power workout more quickly.

10. Berries

When it comes to anthocyanin intake — a vital group of antioxidants — you can’t do much better than berries. Best of all, these tiny fruits are versatile and easy to add to numerous dishes.

Add a sprinkle of dried blueberries to your lunchtime salad. Blend some raspberries into your morning smoothie to counteract the sweetness of the bananas and milk with a little tartness. Your taste buds and neurons will thank you.

11. Mushrooms

Some mushrooms have long-standing reputations for increasing mental clarity. For example, reishi and cordyceps have neuroprotective properties that make them worth the bitter taste.

However, you don’t have to pucker your lips to get the benefits. You can find these extracts in liquid supplemental form. Add a dropper to your green tea and enjoy the dual perks of antioxidants and adaptogens.

Stimulating Creativity With Food

If you want to stimulate creativity in your brain, why not start with your diet? Add more of these 11 foods to your plate and watch your imagination come to life! If all else fails, use the lion’s mane as a brain enhancer.

Lotus Reveals ‘Blueprint’ For Next Generation

  • World premiere for innovative new lightweight EV structure
  • Developed through Project LEVA research programme, rear subframe is 37% lighter than on Lotus Emira V6
  • Will be integrated into Lotus electric sports car architecture
  • Versatile architecture supports multiple layouts, wheelbase lengths, battery sizes and configurations – view an animation at media.lotuscars.com
  • Technology on display at Cenex LCV event on 22/23 September

(Hethel, UK – 21 September 2021) – Just weeks after Lotus confirmed it will be launching a new family of EV performance cars, it has given a world premiere to the innovative new lightweight chassis technology that will underpin the electric sports car in the range.

The new structure has been developed through Project LEVA (Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture), announced last October by Lotus. Project LEVA is a research programme that’s accelerating the development of all-new lightweight structures for next-generation battery electric vehicles.

Today Lotus can reveal it’s this structure developed through Project LEVA which will be integrated into the company’s new architecture for electric sports cars. Thanks to the innovation of Lotus and the Project LEVA partners, the rear subframe is 37% lighter than it is on the Lotus Emira V6. It means Lotus now has the ‘blueprint’ for the next generation of electric sports cars, for future Lotus products and for the Lotus Engineering consultancy to commercialise.

The Project LEVA lightweight chassis technology is being shown at the Low Carbon Vehicle event staged by Cenex, the UK’s Low Carbon and Fuel Cells Centre of Excellence, at Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire, UK, on 22/23 September.

A new animation from Lotus reveals how the technology will form part of the new electric sports car chassis, illustrating the versatile nature of this all-new Lotus-developed vehicle architecture. It is fully adaptable to provide a platform for a range of EVs with variable layouts, wheelbase lengths, battery sizes and configurations.

VEHICLE LAYOUT
WHEELBASE
BATTERY SIZE / CONFIGURATION
MAXIMUM BATTERY POWER
EDU LAYOUT / MAX POWER
Two-seater
Minimum of 2,470mm
8-module / chest
66.4kWh
Single / 350kW
Two-seater
More than 2,650mm
12-module / chest
99.6kWh
Twin / 650kW
2+2
More than 2,650mm
8-module / slab
66.4kWh
Single / 350 kW or Twin / 650kW

As the animation shows, all three layouts feature a common lightweight die-cast rear sub-frame with multiple interchangeable components. This is the Project LEVA innovation, and it means a single vehicle architecture can accommodate two different types of battery configurations:

  • ‘Chest’ layout, where the modules are stacked vertically behind the two seats. A chest layout is a ‘mid-mounted power pack’, ideal for sports car / hypercar vehicle types where a low overall ride height and low centre of gravity are required, and as seen on the Lotus Evija pure electric hypercar.
  • ‘Slab’ layout, where the modules are integrated horizontally under the cabin. This is most suitable for vehicles where a higher ride height and a taller overall profile is required. It is often referred to as a ‘skateboard power pack’ layout.

The innovative new subframe features cylindrical battery cells for high energy density, with the option of a single or twin electronic drive unit (EDU) to support. Cold cure, spot bonding and advanced weld processes mean reduced environmental impact during assembly.

This unique degree of flexibility and modularity in wheelbase and propulsion solutions will be the genesis for a wide variety of electric vehicle applications. These could be for the eagerly anticipated Lotus electric sports car – scheduled for launch in 2026 – as well as for third-party clients through Lotus Engineering.

Funding for the project came in part from the Advanced Route to Market Demonstrator programme (ARMD). Awarded by the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the programme is delivered on behalf of the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) by Cenex.

Richard Moore, Executive Director, Engineering, Lotus Cars, commented: “Project LEVA and the electric sports car architecture are perfect illustrations of the innovation which continues to be at the heart of everything Lotus does. Today’s EVs are heavy in comparison to their ICE equivalents, so the ARMD funding has helped Lotus to innovate earlier in the product cycle and develop a new vehicle architecture that targets lightweight and performance density from conception. Rather than developing a single vehicle, it means Lotus now has the ‘blueprint’ for the next generation of electric sports cars, for future Lotus products and for the Lotus Engineering consultancy to commercialise.”

Project LEVA has been led by engineer Richard Rackham, Head of Vehicle Concepts, Lotus. Richard is best known for his revolutionary work on development of the extruded aluminium Lotus Elise architecture 25 years ago. Richard commented: “Project LEVA is as revolutionary now as the Elise architecture was in 1996. In true Lotus spirit, significant weight savings have been achieved throughout, with a focus on ultimate performance, efficiency and safety being engineered into the structure from the outset – for example, by utilising the vehicle structure as the battery enclosure, having an integrated EDU, eliminating subframes and optimising the multi-link suspension components.”

On Project LEVA, Lotus has collaborated with supply chain partner Sarginsons Industries and leading academics from Brunel University London to harness the full ‘light-weighting’ potential of the vehicle architecture.

Today’s announcement is the latest in a series detailing Lotus’ transition to an all-electric brand:

  • January 2021: Lotus announced it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Alpine, the performance car division of Groupe Renault, to study a number of areas of cooperation, including the joint development of an EV sports car.
  • April 2021: at the Driving Tomorrow global strategy conference, Lotus confirmed the E-Eports vehicle architecture was one of four Lotus-developed chassis that would underpin future models.
  • August 2021: Lotus confirmed it would be launching a new electric sports car in 2026 – Type 135 – which is intended to be manufactured in the UK.
  • Today: Lotus gives a world premiere to the innovative new chassis technology that will underpin that electric sports car.

The next stage of the project is for Lotus to continue development of the all-electric vehicles which will be built on this innovative and market leading new architecture.

Also on the Lotus stand at Cenex is the Lotus Evija, the world’s first pure-electric British hypercar. The car, an engineering prototype, will be ‘naked’ with several body panels removed to allow visitors to see key components and systems.

EMBRACE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE

The newly appointed leader of the Historic and Classic Vehicles Alliance today (21/9/21) urges the industry and enthusiasts to embrace the challenge of the green agenda.

Garry Wilson, who becomes the HCVA’s first CEO says: “A big part of the job will be making sure the sector has a share of the voice as part of the UK automotive industry and heritage sector”.

“I think we need to embrace the environmental challenge and work with legislators to identify solutions – while at the same time demonstrating very clearly the environmental credentials of the classic movement”.

“How can we help the sector become environmentally cleaner, whilst highlighting how it is ALREADY environmentally friendly?”

Garry, 58, is determined the campaigning group, which launched just four months ago, will collaborate with other classic and historic organisations and across the automotive world to ensure policy makers and regulators understand the sector’s priorities and concerns.

He says: “We have to work in partnership with the mainstream motor industry and motorsport to achieve sustainable results. We have to get our voice out there so that our £18.3billion industry is on people’s minds.”

A perfect fit for the HCVA leadership role, Garry is looking forward to meeting members and hearing their views. He began his motor industry journey as a Rover Group graduate trainee in the mid-1980s working his way through various engineering and managerial jobs over 13 years. His post Rover career has included an impressive range of senior roles in automotive sector engineering, innovation, manufacturing and supply businesses.

Recently he’s played a key part in managing the transformation the sector is undergoing helping to establish the Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre and the Advanced Propulsion Centre which facilitates funding to UK-based projects developing low-carbon emission technologies.

The automotive industry has been my life for more than 35 years. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver positive impact – not short term, but genuinely sustainable impact – for a sector I am passionate about,” says the Herefordshire based father of two. “Classics, historics and motorsport – are my passion, but I’m no dyed in the wool petrolhead. On electrification I appreciate both sides of the argument and absolutely believe there should be room for both electric and ICE vehicles now and into the future. I want to work with others to ensure a future that allows both to thriveFor the past seven years I’ve been working in industry helping to establish the Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre and the Advanced Propulsion Centre. What I hope to do now is bring the same thinking, the same energy and commitment to the classic sector.”

Current daily driver is a BMW 5 series, Garry owns or has owned an impressive selection of classics. He describes himself as a ‘neo-Classic guy’. Pride and joy is a 1969 Rover P5B coupe. The new CEO also speaks fondly of a 20 year old BMW Z3 2.8, a 25 year old Land Rover Defender and identifies rallying in a 1980s MG Metro 6R4 as ‘my big passion’. He is a qualified off-road driving instructor, an advanced motorcyclist and holds a motorsport competition licence.

On the task ahead he says: “The big challenges are the immediacy of E10, classics registration, the general movement away from fossil fuels and the development of synthetic fuels. And, of course the skills challenge is a huge issue in the UK at the moment, particularly from the perspective of the age demographics. I’m a big admirer of the Heritage Skills Academy and I want to work with them to enhance the work they are doing”.

“I’m a firm believer in two-way electrification – when you take out an engine and a fuel tank from one of the UK’s heritage vehicles and replace it with an electric power system you should do it in a way that allows an owner to reverse the process later if they need to. It shouldn’t be one way only.”

HCVA Advisory Board chair Julian Barratt said: “It’s great to have a CEO of Garry’s energy and experience on board. I look forward to working with him very closely on our campaigns for the benefit of our members and the classic vehicle world we all care deeply about”

The ‘not for profit’ alliance was launched in May with a mission to protect and promote the sector and secure its long-term future. It campaigns on behalf of individuals and companies in the classic vehicle world including specialist restorers, dealers, parts suppliers and a broad cross section of the multi-billion-pound industry.

In just four months HCVA has built a strong membership base across the industry, owners and enthusiasts. It has attracted widespread publicity in mainstream and specialist media and gained the support of politicians, campaigners and leading industry and motorsport figures. Amongst the HCVA’s early achievements is to open a new dialogue with the DVLA to seek solutions to the problem of issuing of original or age-related registrations. It has also led campaigning to raise awareness of challenges around the introduction this month of E10 fuel.

The sector’s contribution to the UK economy is huge. Annual turnover including substantial international trade is estimated at £18.3 billion, the three-million-strong British classic fleet is valued at over £12 billion and annual tax revenue generated for the exchequer is close to £3 billion.

The trade, in which British craft skills and engineering excellence lead the world, supports around 113,000 jobs in thousands of specialist small businesses and supply chain firms. It also provides training places and apprenticeship schemes, giving opportunities to young people.

Oh Wonder – 22 Break

Oh Wonder is back today with new single “22 Break”, the title track from the unique duo’s surprise new album, 22 Break, out on October 8th. Listen and watch the video for “22 Break” HERE and pre-order 22 Break HERE.

The project was teased earlier this week by the cinematic visual for the short film set to accompany the record, which also previewed opening track “Baby”—watch HERE. All this follows 2020’s No One Else Can Wear Your Crown, and back-to-back top 10 albums from the band who have—on their own distinct terms—become one of UK pop’s more unsuspecting success stories (2.7 billion streams, 1.7 million adjusted album sales, and vocal fans in the likes of Billie Eilish, who covered “All We Do” during her Apple documentary).

By their own design, Oh Wonder have always flown a little below the public radar. Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West have played music together since 2014 and (on the down-low) been romantically involved since 2013. By the time they confirmed their engagement on No One Else Can Wear Your Crown, life was good: then of course the pandemic hit, and a 120-date world tour (plus, it transpired, much more besides) came crashing to the ground. This tumultuous and deeply personal time in their private lives is the subject of Oh Wonder’s fifth studio album, 22 Break. Written autonomously in their home studio, the songs that form it are messages about their true feelings, expressed before they were able to find the words to say to one another. It’s a brutally honest and powerfully beautiful record, and one that lets listeners into the Oh Wonder fold like never before. As Josephine puts it: “We were just writing songs. We had no idea we were writing a break-up album.”

Even without distraction, an audience, or adrenaline, Oh Wonder is not a band who sit still for long. But like many forced to analyze their work/life balance under lockdown, the couple had never really known a life together without Oh Wonder in it, either. In the pandemic’s early phases, Anthony and Josephine worked hard to fill that gap: Anthony even decided to open a coffee shop in Peckham (the gorgeous, meticulously designed Nola), which soon saw round-the-block queues and put many of their touring crew back to work. As they started working on new music, however, all the unspoken tensions between the pair tumbled out. All the time these anguished songs were pouring out, Oh Wonder never spoke about what was happening back in the house; never talking directly about the ending, but they both felt it was coming.

22 Break is a portal into such emotional states, and the life-changing, universal breakup themes (loneliness, inadequacy, resentment, fears for the future) as experienced in real-time by one couple in their garden shed. The production is icy, sparse, and filled with bloops and bleeps, like a message from the ether is trying to come through—which, in a way, it was. Amidst the darkness, there finally came a glimmer of hope. With the record written, the couple went away in September 2020 and finally talked. “It was such a weird thing, to make a break-up album with the person you’re breaking up with, while you’re breaking up,” Anthony reflects (the first in history, Josephine thinks). Even weirder, the album that almost ended them proved to be the band’s salvation: 22 Break is an ultimately cathartic, deeply hopeful project, the light at the end of the tunnel that was Oh Wonder’s quite particular pandemic. With the record complete, the band (true to their DIY spirit) threw themselves into the stunning short film that will accompany the full album and is previewed in the visuals for the title track.

Not many bands can make a break-up album that culminates in them tying the knot—but then again, Oh Wonder has never been like other bands. Coming out of 22 Break and all the soul-searching that it forced them to do, Josephine and Anthony finally got married in August this year. Whilst their relationship now has its own space to exist outside of Nola and Oh Wonder, the duo’s crossroads period has accidentally resulted in their most profound work to date “it’s awkward, it’s vulnerable, but it also saved us,” adds Josephine. Opening up to their fans and each other, the ‘Make or Break?’ poised by 22 Break is not so much a question as an active choice—to be as honest as possible, to move forward, and to begin a brand new chapter in the story of Oh Wonder.

About midwxst

From the oft-overlooked state of Indiana, midwxst, born Edgar Sarratt III, is a genre-defier combining hyperpop and digicore with hip-hop alongside candid lyrics that reveal he isn’t afraid to let his true feelings show. midwxst shares, “A lot of people expected me to be a trapper, rapping about guns and all the generic mainstream stuff. When I talk about how your own mental health and emotions can be the most dangerous thing you possess, especially as a teenager or young adult, people get such a different vibe from me and that’s what I strive for.”

Marine Layer Wines Opens Tasting Room

Marine Layer Wines Opens Tasting Room on the Healdsburg Plaza

Tasting Room Showcases Contemporary Coastal California Design by Sonoma Design Duo, HommeBoys

Food Offerings from Single Thread Farms, Co-Creators of Little Saint, Opening Later this Year

Marine Layer Wines is a boutique winery that aims to bring the terroir and soul of the Sonoma Coast to life.  With its stellar small-production lineup of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, Marine Layer has announced the opening of its highly anticipated tasting room in downtown Healdsburg.

Marine Layer was created by close friends with deep ties in the Sonoma Coast wine scene; friends who share a devotion to wine, hospitality and showcasing the diversity of the Sonoma Coast.  With 2018 serving as Marine Layer’s inaugural vintage, the winery has already gained a cult-like following of industry insiders and locals.

Sonoma designers, HommeBoys have perfectly captured the spirit of Marine Layer in their tasting room design, exuding understated and casual sophistication.  A departure from the more formal tasting rooms of the past, the space is the embodiment of modern California coastal chic; a place to linger and savor the flavors of the Sonoma Coast.

“I always envisioned Marine Layer as a ‘location’ as much as a wine brand.  Since we started this incredible journey, we knew that we needed a place to gather and enjoy our wines while hanging out with our friends,” said Baron Ziegler, founder of Marine Layer. “It’s been a dream to work with the HommeBoys.  Their interpretation perfectly mirrored our vision for a contemporary, laid-back California tasting room — elegant, yet approachable and relaxed.”

Located downtown on the eastern side of Healdsburg’s Plaza, Marine Layer’s tasting room was designed as an ode to coastal California.  The space boasts a bright, warm atmosphere, complete with an array of intimate lounges for guests to relax and enjoy.  Inspired by the surrounding coastal region from which Marine Layer crafts its wines, mixed tones of natural oak and deep ocean blue paneling envelop the space.

“We wanted the various lounges to all to feel unique with their own assortment of furnishings, but at the same time, create some continuity so that it didn’t feel disjointed,” said Austin Carrier, co-owner of HommeBoys.

Design highlights include a modern three-sided glass fireplace, handmade ceramic pendant lights sculpted by Oaxacan artists, oversized Moroccan wool rugs, large beaming skylights, and semi-arched columns that scoop up into the ceiling as guests walk into the space.

The Marine Layer guest experience extends beyond the dramatic design.  To complement guests’ wine tasting, Marine Layer has partnered with a soon-to-open neighbor, Little Saint, a farm-forward gathering place led by SingleThread owners Kyle and Katina Connaughton. The opening menu includes a thoughtfully crafted mezze plate comprised of dips, spreads, housemade crackers and just-picked crudités.  Showcasing a variety of flavors and textures, the mezze plate is a convivial noshing intended for guests to play with alongside the lineup of Marine Layer wines.  The offerings will frequently rotate, as they are based on seasonal produce harvested from the Little Saint farm located nearby.  The Marine Layer x Little Saint Experience includes a mezze plate and flight of five wines for $50 per person, or guests can enjoy a flight of five wines for $35 per person.

Marine Layer is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.  Reservations are strongly encouraged.  To book an experience, please visit Here.  Follow Marine Layer on Instagram: Here.
