Darren Criss – Masquerade

Singer and songwriter Darren Criss released his brand-new EP Masquerade via BMG available HERE. Listen to his newest single “let’s” HERE.

The five-track EP is a diverse collection of music which showcases Darren’s versatility as an artist. From the rock n’ roll anthem “f*kn around” to the glam “i can’t dance” to the most recently released “for a night like this,” each track allows Darren to explore different personas. Darren will perform songs from the EP live for the first time at Elsie Fest on August 29 in NYC as part of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Festival at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Full track listing of Masquerade can be found below.

About the EP, Darren shared on Instagram, “Acting and music are, at their core, the same to me. It’s all about identifying an idea and somehow transforming it into an experience, by way of breathing life into a specific masque. As an actor, I’ve always sought to be consistently inconsistent with the masques I put on, and so I seek to follow suit with the music I make. In the same way a ‘role’ can be different from story to story, each piece of music should be treated like a different ‘part’ in a different play. Masquerade is a small collection of the variety of musical masques that have always inspired me. They might not always sound or feel the same, but they are inevitably and undeniably me behind each masque. And that’s the kind of eclecticism that not only makes for a successful masquerade ball- but what makes me, me.”

Billboard described “f*kn around” as “a slick alt-pop single built around a wiggly bass line.” MTV News praised, “With synthy distortions and a banging guitar loop, the song echoes the sharper edges of contemporaries like Shawn Mendes and Justin Timberlake’s with a theatrical flair fans have come to expect from Criss.” Darren made his late-night television performance debut with the single on The Late Late Show with James Corden alongside Este Haim of HAIM on bass, The Pocket Queen on drums, frequent collaborator and San Fermin frontwoman Charlene Kaye on guitar, and the track’s co-writer CJ Baran on keys.

Music has always played an integral role in Darren’s artistry. As a solo artist, his 2017 EP Homework debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart. Criss has toured to sold-out audiences around the world including headlining the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival with multi-GRAMMY Award nominee and renowned DJ Steve Aoki. In 2019, he also headlined the Balmain Music Festival for the Balmain men’s spring 2020 show. He has been featured on the cover of numerous magazines including such music publications as Billboard and American Songwriter.

As a songwriter, Darren has penned songs for the comedy musical Royalties, for which he was also the creator and executive producer. He received his first Emmy nomination for songwriting in 2015 for Best Original Music and Lyrics for the song “This Time,” which appeared on Glee’s series finale. In addition to collaborations with fellow artists including Rufus Wainwright, Sabrina Carpenter, Bonnie McKee, Jordan Fisher, and many others, he has also written for Apple’s animated series Central Park.

About Darren Criss

Darren Criss is a multi-faceted artist with an illustrious career spanning television, film, music and stage. As an actor, his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in Ryan Murphy’s award-winning series American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace was met with widespread critical acclaim, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors’ Guild Award and Critics’ Choice Award. Having previously portrayed Blaine Anderson on FOX’s global phenomenon Glee for five seasons, he received an Emmy Award nomination for songwriting in 2015 for best original music and lyrics for the song “This Time.” Criss’ songwriting has also seen #1 spots on the cast album charts for music he wrote for YouTube sensation Team Starkid (A Very Starkid Album, Me and My Dick and Starship) which he co-founded in 2009. His 2017 EP entitled “Homework” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart. In the same year, he introduced his indie-pop band Computer Games with his brother Chuck and released their first album Lost Boys Life EP. Computer Games was nominated as one of Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Stars.

Fans of FKA Twigs and Banks would be remiss not to check out synth-pop enchantress L’Freaq – Billboard

L’FREAQ’s blend of gothic sensibilities and sultry soulfulness manages to continually hit the marks of bona de pop bangers. – NYLON

LA-based dark-synth pop artist, L’FREAQ, shares her live and unplugged version of her battle cry title track, Showgirl, from her sophomore EP, Showgirl, due out on September 23, 2021 via Position Music. She also recently shared a lyric video of the single. The word power stands boldly takes its place in front of the red curtain in the lyric video, and in the new live version — L’FREAQ’s voice alone is full of potent, passionate energy. Her raw performance, only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, proves every lyric’s realness in every note. On the new video, she says:

A big goal of mine with the singles from this EP was to show that they could sound great stripped back with just guitar and vocal. Sometimes I want to hear what something sounds like at its bare bones. I am grateful for the guitar stylings of Alejandro Amezquita and the directing and editing skills of Kevin Erickson, who also worked on the other two videos from this series.

Furthering the story from the debut single and music video for Gimmick, it’s clear that the upcoming EP is absolutely stacked with metaphor, all-star fashion, witchy babe vibes and an important message about the role media plays with children — especially young women. L’FREAQ is turning trauma into triumph, tapping into her heart and getting out of her head.

From puppet to powerhouse (just like in The Gimmick video), L’FREAQ breaks free of the monotony and shreds through the brainwashed stereotypes, as she literally shreds on a guitar. Gimmick showed L’FREAQ embodying themes of resiliency in a time of self-doubt, combining heart-pounding beats with passionate lyrics about believing in the power that everyone inherently owns and nobody else can take away. It also emphasizes L’FREAQ’s expansive robust range (Refinery29), which is also on full display in her recent live and unplugged version of Gimmick. This new track follows in those footsteps and takes it further into a deeper love of music, family and personal freedom.

Having recently performed for Backline’s Set Break live stream alongside Alanis Morissette, Tom Morello, Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles and more to raise funds and awareness for mental health services to be distributed to music industry for free, L’FREAQ has been a champion for her community. This song is another chapter of that consistent commitment to rise up and bring people with her.

L’FREAQ, continues to remain an open book of emotions for fans as she lays out her own experience with rejection and struggles with mental health. L’FREAQ belts, Got the courage to be vulnerable, got the guts to wear the crown, cause I dare to bare it all, I refuse to water down, as a testament of truthfulness and self-confidence even when it’s hard. Intimacy on this level allows L’FREAQ to push the storyline forward when it comes to believing in dreams as a reality, especially in the face of adversity. NYLON says, Look at L’FREAQ, draped in jewels and Cleopatra-esque eye makeup; then look a little harder. Behind the artifice, integrity abounds.

L’FREAQ is all about being inclusive, and she is outspoken when it comes to defending the underdog. As an ally of everyone on the spectrum of gender and sexuality, bullies, racists and sexists are not allowed in L’FREAQ’s kingdom. She also shows her love for those closest to her, by highlighting their work: namely her fashion photographer mom, Kelly Cappelli (as seen in Vogue), who does all the photography and artwork for L’FREAQ.

The new release follows L’FREAQ’s debut EP, Weird Awakenings, which played with themes of self-discovery, as well as her 2021 single Make Me Move. Armed with a full book of poetry, L’FREAQ took pieces of her work and composed songs with Mike Irish, who also produced and mixed the EP at Shifted Recording Studios. The EP was mastered by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis London Music. They took their time in discovering a sound that felt genuine, one that explored all the raw places she had been longing to find. Together, they created a modern amalgamation of L’FREAQ’s dark, thoughtful poetry and her raw musical instincts, which inevitably alchemized into songs that are all at once aggressive, sensual and moving.

Having shared a stage with ABBA, India.Arie and Jakob Dylan, it’s important to note her live performance prowess, even without tour dates on the books (speaking of longing). L’FREAQ played a packed NYC performance debut at SoHo House, and channeled Britney Spears (especially during her ferocious Toxic cover), Nick Cave and Beats Antique vibes. The Deli Magazine later dubbed her NYC’s Favorite Emerging Artist. She’s also currently playing Amy Winehouse in Las Vegas show 27, and has been featured on the news several times for her iconic portrayal of Winehouse, who inspired her to sing in the first place, leaving audiences moved to tears from the experience.

With over 500k streams, 240K plays on YouTube, and songs featured in Riverdale, Playboy, Netflix’s Dating Around, Good Trouble, FBI, The Voice, City on a Hill and more, all born from her 5-song debut EP, it’s safe to say this follow-up EP is highly anticipated. Stay tuned for more visual components to follow, along with brand new singles. Showgirl is on the way.

KDA × Tinashe – Die a Little Bit

KDA VS TINASHE DIE A LITTLE BIT FEATURING MS BANKS & KARNAGE KILLS IS RELEASED TODAY

WATCH / SHARE VISUALISER FOR KDA VS TINASHE DIE A LITTLE BIT FT. MS BANKS & KARNAGE KILLS HERE

KDA released Die A Little Bit VS. Tinashe and featuring Ms Banks & Karnage Kills.

Like all modern romances, Die A Little Bit started in the DMs. Having previously worked together on his Just Say smash, KDA messaged Tinashe to let her know how much he loved the track and she immediately sent him the stems. He then enlisted Ms. Banks and the unstoppable Grime talent [Vice], Karnage Kills – who refers to himself as The Grime Barbie – to add some bars.

Within hours of KDA leaking his version of Die A Little Bit to Annie Mac, she was hammering it on her Radio 1 show. Cue a massive and overwhelmingly positive reaction, and a flurry of demand for the track to be released. It fell to the legendary Pete Tong to seal the deal, and Die A Little Bit was confirmed to be released via his ThreeSixZero label in the US and powerhouse British label Black Butter in the UK.

Die A Little Bit is the lead single from KDA’s forthcoming KDA Live Club Show EP and sets the tone for what is to follow. With an emphasis on energy and diversity, it fuses the worlds of RnB, Grime and the Black gay underground, highlighting KDA’s daring, lawless approach to music making and passion for bringing daring and different elements into the same space, purely to see what can happen.

A broad, scintillating collection, a mini-manifesto, KDA’s forthcoming KDA Live Club Show EP, is centered around his coming of age in London’s Soho. Steeped in his own personal history, it brings out the colour he remembers from iconic LGBTQ+ nightspots there.

I came to realise that I spoke about Soho in the past tense, says KDA. London has changed; it was all bright lights, neon signs, there was a danger to it. And when you walk around in Soho now, that’s not there anymore. I want to talk about those stories, with some of the friends and musicians that I’ve met over the past 10 years.

Kris di Angelis, (KDA), has led one of British music’s most remarkable careers. A shy South London kid who found his identity amid the debauchery of the city’s network of underground gay clubs, he’s renowned for his 10-year-long DJing stint alongside Jodie Harsh at Soho’s wildest clubs and spending two decades at the top, notching up more triumphs than virtually any of his peers. He’s been named official DJ for London Fashion Week three years running, scored a number one single with Turn The Music Louder (Rumble), (crafted alongside Katy B and Tinie Tempah), and, more recently, released a torrent of projects during lockdown. This includes his Honey Dijon refix, his sought-after Moi Renee Miss Honey VIP edit, his universally beloved The Human Stone ft. Angie Stone, and his stellar take on the hit Rudimental x Annie-Marie and Tion Wayne link up Come Over. KDA has earned his place in the spotlight, and he’s done it while staying true to the passions and beliefs that first fired his clubbing imagination.

She’s so great at this, so convincing and smart, you’ll feel yourself falling under Solar Power’s spell … She may not be our deity anymore, but in the world of pop music, Lorde’s ability to make moving art is everlasting. – i-D

At 24, Lorde is already a de facto elder stateswoman of the female-centered sound she helped pioneer: a nameless genre somewhere between high-gloss pop and indie rock, untroubled by the stringent rules of Hot 100 radio. – Entertainment Weekly

Solar Power is a lot of things, but more than anything, it sounds like true autonomy. – The Cut

Of the album Lorde says, The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.

To honor the natural world the artist is presenting the album in a first-of-its kind, discless format. An eco-conscious Music Box will be available for purchase as an alternative to a CD. This innovative offering will contain extra visual content, handwritten notes, exclusive photos, and a download card. The card will give purchasers a high-quality download of the music, two exclusive bonus tracks, and access to some special surprises along the way.

When talking about the concept Lorde says, I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD. I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape and price to a CD, to live alongside it in a retail environment, but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.

Earlier this summer, Lorde announced her 2022 World tour dates. The sold-out 40+ show tour, promoted by AEG Presents in the US and Canada, is her first North American tour since 2018 and kicks off in North America in Nashville on April 3 at the Opry House before concluding at the Santa Barbara Bowl on May 7.

ABOUT LORDE

In 2013, a 16-year-old LORDE quietly, yet confidently asserted herself as the voice of a generation with her full-length debut, Pure Heroine. The album would go triple-platinum, win two GRAMMY Awards, and spawn the certified Diamond, record-breaking, international juggernaut single, Royals, and quadruple-platinum follow up Team. The former cemented LORDE as the youngest solo artist and the only New Zealander to achieve #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1987. Time exalted her amongst the Most Influential Teenagers in the World, she landed on Forbes’s 30 Under 30 List, graced the cover of Rolling Stone and performed alongside Nirvana during the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. She also curated the official soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and recorded Yellow Flicker Beat as the lead single. In 2017 LORDE released her second full-length studio album, Melodrama which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Chart, making her the first ever NZ artist to land a #1 debut album in the United States. The album reached #1 in over 45 countries and earned LORDE a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2018 GRAMMY Awards. LORDE makes her highly anticipated return with critically acclaimed new single, Solar Power, from her third full-length studio album, Solar Power, due out August 20th. LORDE currently has over 12 million albums sold worldwide and over 10 billion streams worldwide.

Liza Owens – Songs From Monte Nido

Pop songstress Liza Owen releases her long-awaited and highly anticipated debut EP titled Songs From Monte Nido today which features singles “GETTING GOOD”, a 90s tinged rock beast, the wildly infectious “STARRY EYED”, fiery “WHY AREN’T WE HAVING SEX?” and “JOSIE” featuring critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum country star and current ACM New Male Artist of the Year Jimmie Allen along with two brand new tracks,  “CHLORINE” a synth heavy summer anthem in the making and the dreamy and nostalgic “EVEREST”.

Half Cambodian, half English, Liza Owen spins pop upside down and all around, with defiantly unfiltered lyrics, undeniable melodies and unapologetic grit. Originally breaking into the business writing songs for the likes of Selena Gomez and BTS, Liza finally lets us into her messy, imperfect, tear-stained, yet darkly glamorous world with the project presenting all the makings of a smart and deliciously subversive new star, one who stubbornly refuses to sand down her rough edges or present anything less than an image that is 100% authentic.

The release comes accompanied with a live video of “JOSIE” that sees Liza and Jimmie link up for a beautiful performance of the epic pop ballad, watch HERE.

Songs From Monte Nido is a collection of tracks Liza wrote with her collective ASL, a supergroup of hitmaking, Grammy-award winning writers + producers including Teddy Geiger (Shawn Mendes), John Ryan (One Direction, Maroon 5), Julian Bunetta (Thomas Rhett), Andrew Haas + Ian Franzino (producer duo Afterhrs), and Shungudzo Kuyimba (Jessie Ware).

Monte Nido is a small rural community nestled in the hills of the Santa Monica Mountains, inside the ridge off the coast of Malibu where Liza and her ASL crew reside and escape, with everyone living within just walking distance from each other, a modern day songwriting sanctuary reminiscent of LA’s Laurel Canyon neighbourhood in the ‘60s.

The making of this project spans a two-year sonic experiment with said musical friend group, and while you will find songs reminiscing on growing up in Cambodia and London, Liza’s overall sound, signature, and strut is discovered at the convergence of alternative aesthetic, country sensibility, and pop accessibility–a fitting soundscape to the very place the records were made.
