We are homesick most for the places we have never known. – Carson McCullers

Gruin and Show Gallery are pleased to present Keelin Montzingo’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles entitled Cosmic Latte Nostalgia.

Longing for a time that never was and a place that is accessible only within the imagination, Keelin Montzingo presents a collection of exciting new work that navigates the space between notions of home and the projected world we occupy online. Here, home refers not to where we live, but how we exist within our bodies and how this has changed over time as technology has developed and our sense of self has become increasingly warped and abstracted.

Cosmic Latte is known to be the average color of the universe, the compression of all we know to exist, a milky beige which is found in all of Montzingo’s new paintings. Referencing the mirroring of the cosmos within the Internet, these works explore the dichotomy between self-expression and entrapment within simulation. The search for authenticity in the contemporary world is inextricably linked to public displays of fictionalized behavior. As we seek to find ourselves we develop increasingly more sophisticated ways to invent who we are for others.

The mirror and the real meet and connect at a threshold where we can either try to untangle the facade or find ways of working with where we have arrived, understanding that we cannot revert back to the myths we have cultivated. This journey of controlling representation is nothing new, the Internet is simply a contemporary vehicle for a process we have been undergoing for centuries. The difference is that now we are accelerating at a pace we cannot keep up with or control.

Montzingo does not seek to judge those who cultivate personas, she does not perceive this behavior as duplicitous but rather as an act of creativity. Our ability to imagine is what has led us to turn the camera on ourselves and use the body as a platform for storytelling. Ironically the most extraordinary aspect of humanity, our ability to envision, is also what leads us to invent ever more creative ways to attack the psyche and enact destructive behaviors. Whenever something verges towards a deeper truth, a deeper facade comes with it. Reflected in the cosmos we cannot escape the laws of attraction and opposition.

Montzingo longs to escape the complexity of the now, to dwell in the pastel landscapes of a 1970s Palm Springs utopia where all is simplified and we are distilled to archetypes, the female body a symbol of the mother, the creator, the lover, the seer. But this is impossible, so instead she affords her subjects the freedom of time travellers, moving back and forth through data, creating a link between an imagined past, the contemporary world and projections of the future. For this reason, instead of painting women she knows, Montzingo paints models who are anonymous to her, employing the silhouette of the conventionally celebrated body to free this stereotype and speak of all female identity.

Keelin Montzingo (b.1992) is New York based painter. She studied Communications at the University of Massachusetts and Modern and Contemporary Art at Christies. Montzingo’s paintings are housed in collections in the USA, UK, Singapore, Switzerland, Lebanon, Italy and Thailand. She has exhibited in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.

BASTILLE-THELMA+LOUISE

BASTILLE PERFORMS “DISTORTED LIGHT BEAM” ON
GOOD MORNING AMERICA’S SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

NEW SINGLE “THELMA + LOUISE” OUT NOW WATCH HERE

This morning, Bastille returned to Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series to perform their electric hit single, “Distorted Light Beam”—watch their performance HERE and watch their interview for Good Morning America Digital HERE.

“Distorted Light Beam,” a retro-futuristic pop anthem that was the first taste of the band’s forthcoming new album, was co-written and co-produced with Ryan Tedder alongside the band’s long-time collaborator Mark Crew and shows the next evolution of Bastille’s sound. The song was released earlier this summer alongside a cinematic official video starring British actress Remmie Milner from the BAFTA-winning series, Save Me, and frontman Dan Smith—watch HERE. “Distorted Light Beam” continues to climb up the Alternative Radio Chart and currently sits in the Top 15. In support of the track, the band recently released a live performance video“How We Made It” breakdown, and “Behind The Lyrics” video.

Last week, Bastille dropped their latest euphoric single, “Thelma + Louise”—listen HERE. On the song, they pull together the punchy drum machines and dreamy synths of the 80’s with a newfound sparseness, creating a fresh backdrop for a classic, anthemic chorus. Co-written with legendary songwriter Rami Yacoub (Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time”, Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Album) and Mark Crew, it’s an infectious meditation on “days like these” where you want to just getaway, whether that’s simply shutting your eyes and imagining yourself somewhere else or driving down to Mexico and leaping off the edge of the world. The song cleverly taps into the dichotomy at the heart of the 1991 classic film, where freedom and living in the moment are tempered by the threat of cold, hard reality intervening at any moment.

Escapism is a theme that’s explored in-depth on Bastille’s upcoming record, especially in connection with technology—in this case under the watchful gaze of Future Inc., a data-hungry, fake big tech enterprise from the future (that may or may not bear some resemblance to big tech enterprises in the present). The company’s innovative “Futurescape” technology (as seen in the video for “Distorted Light Beam”) is offering infinite possibilities of a new kind—the chance to journey into your own inner verse.

In Dan’s words, the concept gives Bastille the opportunity to “poke fun at the way these companies appeal to us and appeal to the world, and advertise themselves and talk about themselves, and take themselves really seriously and earn huge amounts of money whilst taking all our data and more.” Watch Bastille talk about the inspiration behind Future Inc. HERE.

More exciting news to follow!

Amber Mark is a pop star waiting to happen – Boston Globe

New York based singer, songwriter and producer Amber Mark releases Foreign Things following its premiere last night on BBC Radio 1 as the Hottest Record. Foreign Things is the third single to emerge from her forthcoming debut album, coming soon via PMR/Interscope Records. The track is accompanied by a stunning official video co-directed by Amber with best friend Satya Zoa, with Foreign Things serving the first chapter of a 5-part anthology of the album’s videos set to form a short film to be released alongside the album. Amber will also play a special, one-off sold-out show at London’s Lafayette tonight – her first live show since the pandemic and an exciting preview of further live shows to be announced soon.

WATCH THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR FOREIGN THINGS HERE

Of the song Amber says, Foreign Things is about the excitement of new experiences. The thrill of newness. This marks the start of my journey towards self discovery and serves as a precursor to the enlightenment and self love that’s achieved in previous singles Worth It and Competition. So excited to continue to piece this story together!

While April’s release of Worth It, which NPR featured as one of their Favorite Songs of 2021 (so far), marked the first official single since 2020’s Generous, 2020 was still a hugely productive year for Amber. With her hometown of NYC hit hard in the first wave of the pandemic and placed under strict lockdown, Amber turned to her simple home studio to create an acclaimed series of home-produced covers and originals titled Covered-19, each accompanied by a homemade video and artworks. The series was followed by a collaboration with longtime friend Empress Of on the protest song You’ve Got To Feel, earning Annie Mac’s Hottest Record, Tune Of The Week and a spot on the Radio 1 playlist. Earlier this year Amber was featured on legendary DJ Paul Woolford’s new piano-house track HEAT, again snagging Annie Mac’s Hottest Record and a long run across the Radio 1 and 2 playlists. Having already amassed over 300 million streams since the release of her breakout debut EP 3:33AM in 2017, news on Amber’s debut album will follow soon.

Prateek Kuhad – Khone De

PRATEEK KUHAD SHARES KHONE DE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

NEW EP SHEHRON KE RAAZ

AVAILABLE NOW

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad has shared the official music video for Khone Do. The track appears on his recently released Hindi EP, Shehron Ke Raaz, with the video streaming now on Prateek’s official YouTube channel.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Reema Sengupta (aka Reema Maya), the whimsical video meanders through fantastical dreamscapes, with the collage art brought to life by Rushil Bhatnagar and Sourya Sen, and serves as a surrealist exploration of the shared dreams of lovers depicted through experimental photomontages.

Kuhad stated, I wanted to explore the idea deep physical and emotional intimacy that lovers share by the idea of them being in bed together. I’ve experienced that intimacy and I’m sure so many others have as well. Reema took that idea into a fantastical and dreamy world that’s privy only to these lovers, that they share together and that outlines their relationship. It’s a gorgeous take on the sentiment behind the song!

Director Reema Sengupta (Maya) elaborated, We wanted to visually explore the concept of timelessness in love. In the music video for ‘Shehron Ke Raaz’, we did it through a nostalgic dance video rooted in real spaces. In the music video for Khone Do we’re looking at timelessness in love through dreams – where the past, present and future can all co-exist in the same frame. The track feels like a beautiful lullaby, it makes you feel like everything is going to be okay. We took the simplest, most instinctive thought that the song evoked and embarked on an ambitious adventure to make an epic 4-minute-long dream.

Last month, the artist shared the official video for the EP’s title track, a slice-of-life music video that pays a charming ode to old Bombay and captures a theme that is central to the four-track Shehron Ke Raaz EP, secret stories of love nestled in the big cities. The video is streaming now on the artist’s official YouTube channel.

The Shehron Ke Raaz EP arrived earlier this month and has already amassed nearly ten million streams globally. Kuhad returns to his Indian roots on the project, recording in Bombay and singing in Hindi as he explores the intimate, often hidden worlds that lovers create for themselves. There’s a sweetness to his delivery that transcends language and culture, resulting in a dreamy and profoundly moving body of work that speaks to the kind of fundamentally human desires that bind us all. The four-track collection includes an acoustic version of Kuhad’s 2020 breakout hit Kasoor, and was heralded by singles Tere Hi Hum and the EP’s title track. Shehron Ke Raaz is available now on all streaming platforms via Elektra Records.

Last fall, Prateek announced his signing to Elektra Records, making history as the first solo Indian act to join the storied label. The news was heralded by the re-release of his 2018 breakthrough EP cold / mess, lauded by Atwood Magazine as an utterly breathtaking, expansive piece of indie folk mastery. The collection has racked up critical praise from NPR, Vulture, Billboard, Uproxx, and former President Barack Obama, who featured cold / mess on his 2019 Songs of the Year playlist. In February, Kuhad shared cold / mess (on piano), a stripped-back take of the delicate ballad.

About Prateek Kuhad

Hailed by Rolling Stone India as one of the country’s leading singer-songwriters, Prateek Kuhad has taken the rest of the world by storm in recent years, writing and performing in both Hindi and English and garnering a slew of accolades and honors around the globe with his mesmerizing, cinematic songwriting.

Growing up in the small city of Jaipur, India, Kuhad’s childhood listening diet consisted primarily of the Indian pop and Bollywood soundtracks that filled the local radio dial, as well as his parents’ CD collection, which contained only limited Western music. A move to New York City for college opened Prateek’s eyes to a new world of music, discovering Elliott Smith and inspiring him to seriously pursue his musical ambitions. While Kuhad has long been a household name in his native country (he became one of Spotify India’s most-streamed artists when the service launched there and the cold/mess EP debuted at #1), 2019 proved to be his breakout year in North America, with a star-making turn at SXSW and a cross-country headline run that culminated with three sold out shows in New York City.

Prateek’s debut album In Tokens and Charms was an instant hit, earning the artist an MTV Europe Music Award, Indie Album of the Year honors from iTunes, and the title of Best Pop Artist at the Radio City Freedom Awards. The album’s opening track, Oh Love, captured first place in the prestigious International Songwriting Competition, which previously helped launch artists like Gotye and Passenger to global audiences. Kuhad has sold out auditorium and amphitheater dates across India, landed arena support slots with the likes of Alt-J and Mike Posner, and traveled the world for headline and festival performances in the US, UK, Australia, Singapore, Canada, and France.

Five Works of Art and Literature Inspired by Marijuana

Art and literature can transform the world and help us to see things in a different way. There are so many different types that you can choose to work with and all of them add some beauty to the world. When it comes to marijuana and psychedelic drugs, there are some great works of art and literature that are inspired by this plant, allowing us to open up and learn more about it. Some of the best works of art and literature inspired by marijuana include:

Super Plant

This work of art can help open your eyes to this beautiful plant and see it under new eyes. While many people assume that marijuana is all bad, evil even, seeing such a beautiful work of art will be able to help you see more about it and all the delicate and natural beauty that comes with it.

Marijuana: It’s Just a Plant

This is a work of literature that will help you to explore marijuana and other psychedelic plants in a new light. While this may not be the first thing that parents will reach for when reading a story to their kids at night, it will make it a point that millions of people use pot each day so it is not such a novel idea compared to what we think. This is a reliable source to introduce the idea of marijuana to your kids, where the parents can help them to learn something new, rather than hoping they get it from the news or other sources.

Bong Hit Station

This is an absurd video that was released in 2013 and can provide all the details that someone new to the world of marijuana would be able to use when they want to get stoned. Sometimes the steps will seem a bit complex and like they do not need to be so bad, but that is part of the humor that many will enjoy with this video.

California Artist

This simple stone sculpture is almost a type of self-portrait for Robert Arneson. He felt that, as an artist that worked in California, he had to deal with a lot of unfair characterizations that he was not that fond of. With that in mind, he created this sculpture, complete with a hippie look and a pot plant growing with it.

Bongolier

Created by Bentley Meeker, Bongolier is a light installation that is meant to mix the high and low culture all in one. It is basically a light display that has chandeliers made out of glass bongs that he repurposed for this sculpture. There are also other sculptures that are there to help juxtapose some of the different sources of light that are in there. Some are going to be kind of shady and others are there to show the full spectrum to give something unique.

The Shifting Perception of Marijuana and Other Psychedelics

The approval of marijuana and psychedelics has been a shifting change in many countries over the years. While there are still a lot of individuals and even governments that are not jumping on board, there is more acceptance for this than there was in the past. With more art and literature being inspired by marijuana each day, we are sure to see this become more widely seen in the future.

Seeing the Beauty of Marijuana

While there are still some people who worry that marijuana and other similar drugs are all bad and will ruin society, there is so much beauty and joy that comes with this plant and many different benefits that come with it. Thanks to the introduction of many different types of art and literature, more people throughout the world will be able to see some of this beauty too.

Maalot Roma, set to become the new “lounge” in the Eternal City for those who want to be in the know, introduces its restaurant’s food concept, created by Don Pasquale’s executive chef Domenico Boschi.

Domenico and Edoardo Officioso, Maalot Roma’s General Manager, comment; “Don Pasquale wants to attract not only an international clientele but also the food connoisseurs in Rome. Our menu includes authentic Italian and Roman dishes together with innovative recipes that give homage to the tradition winking to unexpected and modern paring.” 360 Magazine is excited to try the menu as its hearing these interesting meals.

The breakfast features a wide selection of pastries, but also Roman Maritozzo con la Panna, Pizza with Mortadella and vast choice of cooked eggs reinvented with roman traditional ingredients – eggs with basil and tomatoes, eggs al Matriciana and eggs al Cacio and Pepe. However, the unexpected combinations don’t end here. The Maritozzo Salato featuring aubergines, cod, and potato, and meatballs is the menu’s most anticipated surprise.

Lunch and dinner options include a wide range of vegetables from local producers to meet the needs of modern trends. Those keen on plant-based gastronomic experiences can choose from Zucchine Romanesche, I Famosi Friggitelli, Le Puntarelle, and Cicoria. Among the starters is the fried octopus with chickpeas and chicory standouts.  Main courses include Amatriciana Don Pasquale with smoked pig cheek by Sauris with handmade Pici and Roman pecorino DOP; Pappardelle, Ajo, Ojo, Baccalà, and Ceci for a rustic dish full of flavors; Vitella alla Fornara and Galletto alla Cacciatora, both meat dishes in which traditional recipes are re-created with innovative cooking technics to soften the meat and make it tasty and juicy.

The traditional Tiramisu or the Apple and Cinnamon Crumble delight those with a sweet tooth.

Four Questions to Ask Your Personal Injury Attorney

Meeting with a lawyer for the first time can be stressful, especially when you’re pursuing an important personal injury case. Need some help figuring out what to ask? Here are a few helpful suggestions:

How Much Will This Case Cost Me?

One of the most important factors to consider before pursuing a personal injury case is if it’s worth the time and effort. One way to decide that is to find out how much it will cost you. That means asking your injury attorney what their fees are.

Most lawyers work on contingency, meaning they only get paid if you win the case, in which case the amount they received is based on a percentage of your settlement. It’s also worth checking what advance costs (filing fees, medical record retrieval fees, expert witness fees, etc.) you’re liable for if you don’t win.

What Could My Settlement Be Worth?

Another major factor in deciding if a case is worth pursuing is how much you stand to gain from it. Injury attorneys can calculate an estimated settlement amount for you based on things like the cost of your medical bills, any property damages you may have suffered, wages lost due to missed work, and more.

Getting an idea of how much you can expect from a settlement is good not only for helping you choose whether or not to pursue your case, but also if a certain lawyer’s terms are acceptable to you, or if you should consider hiring someone else instead.

What Will My Role in the Case Be?

Different lawyers work in different ways. Some require a high level of participation from their clients, while others are happy to work on things on their own and only contact you when they need information. Likewise, you may want to take a more active role or you may prefer to leave it in their hands.

Whatever your preference, it’s important to know what is expected of you, and also for your injury attorney to know what you expect of them. Establishing these things through clear and upfront communication is vital to the success of any personal injury case.

How Much Experience Do You Have?

One of the most important factors to consider when hiring a lawyer, if not the number one most important factor, is how much experience that lawyer has with cases similar to yours. Even if a lawyer has worked on numerous personal injury cases over the years, there are different kinds of cases within that milieu.

From car accidents to work-site injuries to commercial negligence, an attorney can work for many years without once representing a case like yours. If you want the very best representation possible, you want to know that the lawyer you’re talking to has had both experience and success in cases like yours.

Black-Owned Crowns × Hops Brewing Beer in Honor of Stacy Abrams

This past weekend, Crowns & Hops Brewing Co., the first Black-owned craft beer brand in Inglewood, CA, released “The Blue Peach” – a Blueberry Peach gose that is brewed in collaboration with Barrel & Flow (Black beer festival in Pittsburg, PA) and Black Calder Brewing (first Black-owned brewery in Grand Rapids, MI). The beer was made in honor of Stacey Abrams, and a percentage of the funds generated from its sale will be donated to Fair Fight, a national voting rights organization focused on voter suppression and protecting voting rights. “The Blue Peach” is a limited edition beer and is currently available in select retailers in Los Angeles. Please visit Crowns and Hops Brewing Co. to learn more about the release of the beer.

In addition to the release of “The Blue Peach,” Crowns & Hops Brewing Co. will co-host a panel discussion and mixer with the Inglewood Chamber of Commerce and the City of Inglewood. The event takes place on Wednesday, August 25, and is held in celebration of Black Business Month.

Crowns & Hops Brewing Co. recently launched their equity crowdfunding campaign “OWN CROWNS” to invite the community to invest in the brand’s mission and success. The capital raised will go directly to the buildout of their new flagship restaurant/brewpub Crowns Inglewood, a 14k sq foot location off of Manchester & Crenshaw and a little over a mile from the SOFI Stadium. In an effort to collaborate with the community of Inglewood and those who champion racial equity in the U.S., co-founders Beny Ashburn & Teo Hunter believe this opportunity will allow for the community to invest in the city’s development while supporting Black-owned businesses in the region.

As stated by Beny Ashburn, CEO, “Our brand started with the community. Now, we want to offer the community an opportunity to own a part of Crowns in the City of Champions and wherever we expand.”

Crowns Inglewood is a community establishment based in the heart of Inglewood, and will provide a safe, family-friendly space to gather, dine and have delicious independent craft beer. During a time where most Black & Brown communities feel left out of the development of their own neighborhoods, this investment opportunity allows for the community to participate in the revitalization efforts of a city. Crowns & Hops will offer locals and visitors alike an opportunity to publicly connect in Inglewood/South L.A. to enjoy premium products produced in Inglewood.

“We have always celebrated the mission of community and ownership in the craft beer industry. We’re excited to bring these concepts of investment and equity to a region that has been starved of resources for generations,” said Teo Hunter, COO & Head of Beer Operations.

WIZtheMC – Everything Music Video

South African born, Germany raised, and Toronto based pop/rap artist WizTheMc releases a music video for his latest single “Everything.” Directed and edited by Clyde Monroe, and starring Noa Fisher (Uncut Gems, Betty), the video showcases the highs and lows of a whirlwind love affair. “The “Everything” video is a visual representation of Infatuation, the first of many stages of love that I will be exploring in my upcoming releases,” says WizTheMc.

The video for “Everything” serves as the first in a series of three visual chapters due from Wiz this year. Along with “Break” and “Do It Over”, the three visuals unite to tell a linear cinematic story about Wiz’s experience with love and relationships. The video for “Everything” debuted on Diffus Magazine earlier this morning.

The acoustic guitar driven single follows up the success of Wiz’s What About Now? EP, released at the end of last year on 10K Projects/ Homemade Projects. The EP includes Wiz’s breakout single “For A Minute,” which has surpassed 30M streams on Spotify to date.

Fitting for an artist who spent formative years on three different continents, WizTheMc describes his sound as “borderless music.” It’s an apt description for the 22-year-old singer, rapper, and producer, who combines an ear for sticky pop hooks with nimble rapping abilities, all bolstered by high-octane production and summery guitar loops.

Currently based in Toronto, the Cape Town-born artist is bringing his magnetic records to the masses. As a teenager, he began rapping with friends in the town of Lüneberg, Germany, and like many Gen Z creatives, applied a DIY ethos to music-making.

“For me, it was always the internet. I learned how to freestyle off the internet, how to write songs, how to make beats,” he says. “That’s so beautiful, because no matter where I was, if I had my laptop, my interface, and my mic, I could make music.”

Wiz’s career hit warp speed in the summer of 2020, when his peppy love song “For a Minute” became a major online hit, following his signing with Elliot Grainge’s 10K Projects.  It’s since accrued over 27 million streams on Spotify alone. A charming music video shot in the midst of quarantine highlights Wiz’s natural charisma, easy screen presence, and goofy sense of humor. But now that he’s got more resources behind him, he’s committed to making a world that expands on his music.

Recent videos for “All My Friends Are Stoned” and “World is Fucked” showcase Wiz’s playful and visually creative side, with rich color palettes and surreal humor. “Sometimes, I would just write the chorus and then write the music video concept just off the chorus,” he says. “With everything I’m making, there is just a visual element that’s working in the background.”

In addition to gearing up for live shows including major festival dates like Austin City Limits, Wiz is currently putting the finishing touches on a new batch of songs. He says introspective rappers like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole have inspired him to pour more of himself than ever before into the music he’s writing; “it’s been my goal to be able to put down my emotions as accurately as possible onto paper. To the point that I feel moved by my own words because they feel so true to me,” Wiz says. “I feel like these songs are the closest to my real experience. These are the most vulnerable songs I’ve written to date.”

Forthcoming singles “Everything” and “Break” have a darker sensibility and an urgency to them, drawing attention to Wiz’s emotive rasp. He uses songwriting for emotional excavation, but maintains that what matters more to him is not what he gets out of a song, but what you do.

“My favorite thing is when I make something I don’t understand or love immediately and then it grows on me,” he explains. “I feel like it’s an empowering idea for artists that we are not really the ones in control to make something meaningful. We don’t have to understand anything to make anything great, we just have to be there and show up and let the music come through us.”
