NY PopsUp × An Evening of 100 Boyfriends

NY PopsUp, the statewide initiative designed to celebrate and reinvigorate the arts in New York, is proud to present An Evening of 100 Boyfriends, curated by Whiting Award-winning author, Brontez Purnell. The one-time-only event, featuring readings from Purnell’s critically-acclaimed book, 100 Boyfriends, will be held at MoMA PS1 on Friday, July 30 from 5:30 – 8:00pm ET. To sign up for FREE tickets, please visit the MoMA website

The cast for the FREE readings will include, Jackson Howard, Mx Justin Vivian Bond, Khalif Diouf, Max Steele, Cakes da Killa, Elliot Reed, Savannah Knoop, Wonza Johnson, Saxton Jay Walker, Adam R, ThugPop, Ty Mitchell, and Quinn Roberts.

A novel-in-stories that doubles as a “symphony of sex, trouble and wisdom,” 100 Boyfriends is a smart, shocking, and devastatingly funny spiral into the imperfect lives of queer men desperately fighting – and often losing – the urge to self-sabotage. Purnell’s characters solicit sex on their lunch breaks, expose themselves to racist neighbors, sleep with their coworker’s husbands, rub Preparation H on their hungover eyes, and, in an uproarious epilogue, take a punk band on a disastrous tour of Europe. They also travel to claim inheritances, push past personal trauma, and cultivate community while living on the margins of a white supremacist, heteronormative society.

Brontez Purnell is a writer, musician, dancer, filmmaker, and performance artist. He is the author of a graphic novel, a novella, a children’s book, and the novel Since I Laid My Burden Down. The recipient of a 2018 Whiting Writers’ Award for Fiction, he was named one of the thirty-two Black Male Writers of Our Time by T: The New York Times Style Magazine in 2018. Purnell is also the frontman for the band the Younger Lovers, a cofounder of the experimental dance group the Brontez Purnell Dance Company, the creator of the renowned cult zine Fag School, and the director of several short films, music videos, and the documentary Unstoppable Feat: The Dances of Ed Mock. Born in Triana, Alabama, he’s lived in Oakland, California, for more than a decade.

AJ Mitchell × Skyview

Today, Gold-certified pop phenom AJ Mitchell is pleased to announce that his highly anticipated debut album, SKYVIEW, will be released on September 10, 2021, via Epic Records/Vol 1 Records.  Along with the announcement, AJ has shared the official artwork for the album.

SKYVIEW is executive produced by GRAMMY Award-winner Mike Dean (Kanye West, Jay Z, Drake, Travis Scott, The Weeknd) and will feature his Top 40 charting singles “Stop” and “Slow Dance” ft. Ava Max, as well as  Growing Pains,” “Cameras On” and the recently released “One More Fight.”

In addition to revealing the album release date, AJ also announces dates for his official SKYVIEW 2021 Tour this fall. The 21-date US tour will kick off on September 13, 2021, with a homecoming of sorts in St. Louis, MO, right outside his hometown of Bellville, IL where he used to see shows growing up.  The tour will also bring AJ to cities like Toronto, New York and Nashville before wrapping in Phoenix on October 17th. A special early bird on sale launches on Thursday, July 29 at 10 AM local time, while the tour will go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 30 at 10 AM local time. Tickets can be purchased at the Drive In Makeout website, while the full tour itinerary can be found below.

On the album, AJ Mitchell shares, “SKYVIEW is the final chapter of the first era of my artist journey. In 2016, I released my first single “Used To Be”, a song I had written at 13 years old.  That song set me into a year journey traveling the world; learning, writing, collaborating, performing and constantly evolving. In that time, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with so many talented artists, writers, producers, photographers, and directors around the world. Those collaborations and experiences have sculpted who I am today. I dove into this industry at 15 years old, only knowing two things: I wanted to write songs and sing them as my career. SKYVIEW is the summary of my artist journey up until now. As a kid, the Skyview Drive-In theater was a place in my small town of Belleville, Illinois that had the power to transport me into a world of endless possibilities. Today, SKYVIEW is proof that anything can happen if you are willing to take the risk and do the work necessary to make any dream come true.”

Elektra Records Announces Home In This World: Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads

Elektra Records has announced Home In This World: Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads, a reimagined version of American folk icon Woody Guthrie’s groundbreaking 1940 album, Dust Bowl Ballads. Curated by GRAMMY Award-winning music supervisor and producer Randall Poster [Skyfall, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boardwalk Empire], Home In This World is available for preorder now and arrives September 10 with the endorsement of the Woody Guthrie Estate.

Cited as one of the first concept albums ever, Dust Bowl Ballads tracks ring true nearly four generations later as America faces a different kind of depression and looming climate crisis. Now celebrating its 81 anniversary, the record has been reimagined for a new era by a cross-genre collective of artists. Poster has assembled an all-star cast of everyone from GRAMMY Award winners Lee Ann Womack and John Paul White to grunge poet laureate Mark Lanegan and rising country and Americana star Lillie Mae, acclaimed husband-and-wife folk duo Shovels & Rope, virtuosic mandolinist Chris Thile, celebrated Canadian cowboy Colter Wall, bluegrass phenomenon Watkins Family Hour, and indie stalwarts Waxahatchee.

The news was announced exclusively via Rolling Stone this morning and is heralded by the track and official lyric video for “Dust Cainߣt Kill Me,” performed by The Secret Sisters, who stated, “One of our COVID lockdown highlights was holing up in a hometown studio to record a tribute song to the great American storyteller, Woody Guthrie. We loved swampin’ up his folk tune with a little Alabama mud. Hope y’all like it too!”

Poster elaborated on the project, sharing, “Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads’ is as relevant as ever. While profiteers exploit our natural resources, there is a growing sensitivity to the harsh farming practices that put our well-being at risk and a concerted movement toward regenerative agriculture that can reinvigorate the soil and push back on climate change. I asked some of my favorite artists to help render these songs, hoping that this collection will reinforce the enduring power and prescience of Guthrie’s music and reveal the power of song. I tried to think of these songs as the soundtrack to a movie, building a narrative, a story where the world wakes up to the climate threats and unite to combat it successfully. It’s a great movie.”

Nora Guthrie, daughter of the folk icon and curator of the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, added enthusiastically, “WHAT A FEAST! Delicious… tasteful… spicy…& organic… all”

Sharing aligned missions, Home In This World will be released in partnership with Kiss The Ground, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to awaken people to the possibilities of regenerative agriculture and inspire participation in this movement through media, communications, education, immersive programming, and advocacy.

“I was thrilled when Randall first told me about this project and his vision for tying the album to Kiss the Ground’s mission,” adds Kiss The Ground Co-Founder, Educator and Policy Director, Finian Makepeace. “Music is a powerful tool for carving out a path to a regenerative future! By touching our hearts as they flow through our subconscious, these songs can work in tandem with Kiss the Ground’s efforts to awaken people to the possibilities of regeneration.”

Chi-Guide

By: Emily Bunn × Armon Hayes × Vaughn Lowery

360 Magazine recently visited The Windy City to sight-see, socialize, and of course, enjoy some classic Chicago deep dish pizza. Below, we’ve complied a guide of our must-see stops in Chi-Town. Whether you’re planning your next vacation or prepping for a day trip into the city, 360 is sure to point you in the right direction.

Hornblower Seadog Cruises

Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave, Chicago, IL 60611

Seadog Speedboat Tours in Chicago provides exciting excursions where tourists can steady their sea legs. Their boat is propelled by two V-12 motors and pushes about 2000 HP. This boat tour venue is a bit cheaper than the other traditional tours in the area. Furthermore, Seadog Cruises are also much more interesting.

Our cruise guide was extremely comical and entertaining, which made for an enthralling trip. He possessed a charismatic and energetic zeal that was infectious to our entire tour group. Yet, the most attractive part of the route was the stunning view of the Chicago skyline.

Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe

196 E Pearson St, Chicago, IL 60611

Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe (established 2004) is one of the most well-known breakfast spots in The Windy City. Their high-quality level of service and ability to produce an impeccable pancake is unmatched.

We dove into many of their dishes and secondary orders– like their turkey bacon, sausages and muffins, as well as fruit cups. If you visit, Wildberry’s fresh-pressed orange juice is a must-try. This fine eatery is handled like a well-oiled machine. Although it took a while to sit down, once we ordered our food came out right away.

Sidetrack

3349 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60657

Sidetrack is a high-energy, alternative discothèque experience. This extremely diversified and non-intrusive venue welcomes all guests. Cheap booze and good music are provided so that customers can get their groove on. The venue hosted a polite doorman and a bartender with access to several rooms.

On Sunday, Sidetrack possessed a highly mixed ratio of men and women of all genders, beliefs and cultures. 360 Magazine strongly recommends this spot for a memorable night of dancing. On the whole, the crowd was friendly, funny and fabulous. Sidetrack is the perfect spot to break the ice.

The Signature Room at the 95th®

875 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611

The Signature Room is a premium, fine dining room with 360° views over Chicago’s breathtaking city center. If you’re dressed to impress (since The Signature Room does enforce a dress code), head straight to the restaurant’s living room for an intimate and decadent culinary experience. To pair with your dish, The Signature Room offers many delicious specialty cocktails. As compared to any other top-class steakhouse, The Signature room is moderately prices and provides superior foodie selections. 360 Magazine was waited on by staff who was attentive, professional and amicable.

While their cuisine is amazing, the restaurant’s expansive views take the cake. The elevator pushes you to the building’s 95th floor in minutes–so if you fear heights, think twice. Regardless, The Signature Room is a Windy City staple. A must-visit.

Windy City Nails & Spa

5316 N Milwaukee Ave ste g, Chicago, IL 60630

360 Magazine stayed at nearby Airbnb in this neighborhood and wanted to get a last-minute pedicure. Windy City Nails & Spa saved the day! This nail salon and spa follows all CDC guidelines, and even took our temperature while wearing masks. This no-frills facility offers nail, waxing, and eyebrow services.

When it came time to pay, Windy City’s doting service and pedicure cost us $28. The nail tech took her time to perform the manicure with gentle care and precision. This nail parlor is great option, if you don’t want to go into downtown Chicago and pay the downtown prices.

Gorilla Sushi Jefferson Park

4945 N Milwaukee Ave #2, Chicago, IL 60630

Gorilla Sushi is a hidden gem in Jefferson Park near Merta Station. If you’re looking for Asian cuisine to tantalize your tastebuds, look no further. With tasty selections like gyoza, sushi rolls, and sashimi, even the pickiest eaters are sure to find a dish they love.

For a sushi spot, Gorilla Sushi is very inexpensive. This restaurant provides excellent service paired with picturesque presentation. Fresh, fast, and affordable, this sushi joint is a lesser-known treasure of Chicago.

The Underground

56 W Illinois St, Chicago, IL 60654

The Underground Chicago (15) is one of the most legendary nightclubs in the Midwest. Frequented by A-listers like like Justin BieberUsherLaBron JamesDavid BeckhamWill.I.Am, and Miley Cyrus– The Underground provides unmatched, elevated entertainment experiences. Beats reverberated throughout the energetic club all night, thanks to the state of the art sound system. Paired with pyrotechnics and projections, this nightclub truly knows how to put on a show.

This venue has premium bottle service, welcoming staff, and a fashionable porter. On the day we visited, Lil Jon DJ’d alongside Emmy award-winning TV host, actor and personality, Billy Dec. If you’re ready to party after the pandemic, be sure to visit here.

Beat Kitchen on the Riverwalk

91-95 E Riverwalk, Chicago, IL 60601

Beat Kitchen is the perfect pit stop for a cold can on a hot day. 360 Magazine quickly stopped in at this restaurant, and was impressed by their quick and extremely hospitable service. All of the staff was very welcoming.

While Beat Kitchen is a little expensive, you are paying for quality cooking that is surely worth the price. The restaurant of the atmosphere is lively and hip. Beat Kitchen creates an enjoyable ambience with their eclectic array of Afro Latino music.

H&M has a consistent supply of merchandise that is well-outfitted for travel and tourism. For hip adults and teens, H&M has all the trendy styles one could desire. Whether you’re looking for business casual duds or a new swimsuit for vacation, H&M has your back.

Lou Mitchell’s

565 W Jackson Blvd, Chicago, IL 60661

Lou Mitchell‘s lives up to its prestigious reputation as one of the best diners in Chicago. In 2018, Lou Mitchell’s received a Michelin star. This restaurant and bakery constantly beckons in customers with their excellent service, food and ambience. Lou Mitchell’s does their own baking, so customers can enjoy freshly baked breads and marmalade selections.

360 Magazine loved sitting outside in the sunshine while we enjoyed your meal. However, the inside of Lou Mitchells offers a more retro, vintage diner feel. We recommend their fluffy, delectable flapjacks!

Giordano’s

1340 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60605

The legendary Giordano’s is located in Chicago’s South Loop. All other pizza shops pale in comparison when stood next to this iconic pizza shop. Giordano’s stuffed (AKA deep-dish) pizza is truly unbeatable. Layered with fresh cheese, a buttery, flaky rind, mouthwatering tomato sauce and chicken sausage, every bite is meant to be savored.

Giordano’s offers local craft beer selections to pair with their pizza pies. No matter how hungry you come in, it will be extremely difficult to eat all the pizza. The portion sizes here are very generous. However, Giordano’s pizza makes for delicious leftovers that can easily be reheated in the oven. 360 Magazine will definitely be back to enjoy another tasty slice from this iconic pizza shop.

MCCB Chicago

2138 S Archer Ave, Chicago, IL 60616

Modern Chinese Cookbook (MCCB) creates magical dishes that will instantly take you to Beijing. MCCB’s Sichuan and Canton style cuisine is authentic and mouthwatering. This Asian eatery has all the ingredients for a wonderful gastronomic experience: friendly staff, Michelin-starred chefs and carefully designed appetizers. We recommend trying the restaurant’s signature dish, charcoal-grilled whole fish.

Praise for MCCB continues to flow year by year, thanks to their fine food and hospitable service. If we could embrace the owners for creating such a pleasant atmosphere, we would. 360 Magazine will surely come back to MCCB soon!

Five Unique Ways to Get Fit

Regular physical activity programs ideally consist of a balance of cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility exercises. But this is not always realistic or appealing. If the sight of those words makes you want to lie down or cringe and hide, then you need to find other fun ways to exercise and get your body moving. All those types of regimes can be found elsewhere and it can be fun.

Try Something New

Exercise does not strictly have to be in the gym or on the yoga mat. There are so many other options of exciting forms of movement that get you fit and motivated. Most people don’t realise how beneficial other forms of non-formal exercise can be. Horseback riding is just one example. This is an exercise of moderate intensity that works important core muscles in the abs, back, pelvis and thighs. It has a positive physical and emotional impact in that you are outdoors enjoying nature while bonding with your four-legged friend.

Think back to your youth (or your parent’s younger days). Roller skating was the in-thing even though it is now seen as retro and funky. Roller skating, according to studies, delivers a complete aerobic workout that engages all of the body’s muscles, particularly the heart. Roller skating is comparable to jogging in terms of health advantages. So get yourself a pair of the best roller skates you can afford, as well as a helmet and knee and elbow guards, and let the wind whistle through your hair. Get the whole family involved for a fun social way to exercise.

Dance Away Your Calories

Dance is known to raise your heart rate and challenge your coordination. There are various types and genres of dance to appeal to everyone. Ballroom, line dancing, salsa, hip hop, African and tap are just a few options you could investigate. Between 130 and 250 calories are burned in a 30-minute dance class. Some types of dance do not even require a partner. Belly dancing is a terrific kind of cardiovascular exercise that releases natural endorphins into the body and boosts the mind, giving the dancer a workout high.

Alternatively, put the music up loud in your living room and have a dance party for one. This is an excellent way to get the body moving and put you in a good mood. Some people even dance around while doing household chores.

Hiking and Geocaching

Hiking is another great exercise regime to take part in and the whole family can be involved. This can range from gentle walks in nature to steep, rocky climbs that may require a little extra skill. An extension to hiking can be treasure hunting in the twenty-first century: geocaching. This is an adventurous sport that uses a GPS to find the hidden cache. Get together a group of family and friends and let the adventures begin. Getting to the cache is half the fun and this is where the exercise part comes in. Games like Pokémon GO are a form of geocaching and can be very popular with teens and youngsters alike.

There are so many other options worth looking into when thinking of other ways to get your blood pumping. Trampolining or rebounding, gardening, kayaking, bike riding and even playing Frisbee or catch are all great forms of fun exercise.
