House of One Q×A

Brittany Farinas fiercely and fashionably has entered the world of interior design. The designer of both residential and commercial spaces resides in South Florida, where she launched her company, House of One. After graduating from the University of Miami with a degree in interior design, Farinas utilized her life-long passion to help others beautify their spaces. Streamlined, sleek, and polished, Farinas has an impeccable eye for style that makes her stand out. 360 Magazine spoke with the designer about her favorite interior aesthetics, House of One’s recent blog launch, and upcoming projects.

When did you first get into designing residential and commercial spaces?

About four years ago.

What type of look does House of One try to imbue in its clients spaces?

I try to make each of my client’s spaces very much a reflection of who they are, while creating a visually exciting yet timeless look. At House of One, we strive on creating unique spaces with bold moments.

How would you describe your personal favorite interior aesthetic?

My personal design aesthetic is minimal eclectic. I love sculptural elements in a space and I have a great appreciation for luxurious textures. When it comes to designing an interior space for myself- I like to neutralize the primary pieces (larger furniture items such as sofas, tables, cabinetry) and add character in secondary pieces (i.e accent chairs, pillows, accessories, accent lighting).

What visual design software does House of One utilize?

We use AutoCAD, SketchUp, and multiple rendering softwares.

What is the most important thing to consider when designing an interior space?

The most important thing to consider when designing spaces for our clients is to envision exactly how they will use their space daily and how the space will evolve through time.

How does designing a residential space differ from designing a commercial space?

When designing a commercial space, it’s about promoting the brand image and creating a setting for productivity and growth for the company as a whole. It’s necessary to be conscious of how multiple groups of people might be using the space- whereas designing for a residential client is more specific and lifestyle driven. While designing residential and commercial spaces are targeted towards a different end goal, both need to be extremely functional while aesthetically pleasing.

On your website, I saw that you are launching a blog. That is so exciting! What type of content will be published on House of One’s blogspace?

Yes! I am extremely excited about the blog as well. This will be a place where I can elaborate more on the projects in different categories. For example, we will have a section labeled “Project Tours” where you will be able to get an in depth look at some of our recently completed work. I’ll also be featuring posts on different trends, and a behind the scenes look of our design process.

Where do you find interior design inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere I go. However, I’ve always been inspired by fashion. When I go eat at restaurants I can’t help but touch the different fabrics and materials. I have always been so curious that way.

Did you always have an eye for detail, or are there ways in which you’ve sharped your interior design vision over time?

I would say I’ve always had an eye for detail. My mom worked at a furniture store when I was about the age of 3-15. I spent a lot of days with her hanging around the showroom. I always gravitated towards certain colors/details. At a young age I was very opinionated about what I liked and didn’t like when it came to design. Over time, I feel my eye for design has definitely evolved, and I know it will keep doing so over time. I think it’s just a part of life and growing as a person and designer.

Are there any exciting projects coming up for House of One that you can speak about?

Yes! We’re currently working on a 8500 square-foot office space that we’re all really excited about- the palette is gorgeous. We’ve also been working on restoring a Mediterranean home in Miami Beach, which will be completed in about two months. This project is very special for us, and we’re excited to get this one styled and photographed soon.

BROWN + HUDSON — TRAVELER TYPE TEST

The longtime luxury travel leader has partnered with leading scientists to offer travelers personalized insights into why and how they travel

Bespoke travel company Brown + Hudson announces the release of a valuable new test to help people find out who they are as a travelers. Beta testers have suggested that the Values Interests and Personality Traveler Type Test’s (VIP TTT) may well be the most useful tool to emerge since the early days of luxury travel.

While there are numerous established and well-known personality tests, the VIP TTT is the first science-based assessment to focus exclusively on an individual’s travel personality: their travel type, values and interests.

Why now? The thinking behind this new initiative goes like this: There is a huge amount of pent-up demand for travel. Understandably, we all just want to go—to escape to—anywhere. We’ve had more than a year to dream about places we want to go, but have we really stopped to think? Have we taken the time to consider why we travel at all, how we could be traveling smarter, who we are as travelers?

Brown + Hudson’s VIP TTT answers those questions. It isn’t a quick and easy, thinly veiled sales pitch on where you should go next. Rather, the company worked with two eminent travel psychologists, Dr. Jaime Kurtz, a professor of psychology at James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA, and Andrijana Pujić, a Serbian expert in the area of psychometrics and the design of personality trait assessments. It’s a thoughtful test that consists of 77 considered questions.

“For too long, luxury travel professionals have been obsessed with the where of travel. Knowledge of destinations, hotels and the ‘stuff’ of travel has been the value they added. This is no longer enough. It’s the kind of work that A.I can already do rather well,” says Philippe Brown, the founder of Brown + Hudson.

“The travel professionals who will survive and thrive in the future will shift their focus from where, when and how many people, to why, who and how,” continues Brown, who not only intends to use the test with his company’s clientele but also hopes that other travel companies and agents will license and use the test, which in turn will move the entire industry forward.

“They’ll make being close to their client their priority. They’ll be a hybrid of therapist and an investigative journalist. Therapist in terms of how they get to know their clients and journalist in terms of their curiosity, and approach to the destination. The VIP TTT is a valuable therapeutic starting point. It tackles the important question of who is traveling and helps them get better outcomes from their precious time away from home.”

After spending 10–15 minutes completing the test, each user will receive a bespoke profile report (basically a guidebook written all about them), a symbol that represents their particular travel type, and an extract from Brown’s upcoming book, REVISIT: The New Art & Science of Luxury Travel. In beta research, 95% of testers found the results insightful and valuable, and 89% found the test experience enjoyable.

Brown + Hudson senior private travel advisor Ben Lavender says,“My profile and bespoke report provided a deeper understanding of my purpose when traveling. It has helped me gain a more developed insight into how and why I personally should travel rather than focusing on where. I think users will derive huge benefit from this—specifically nine times more benefits from their travel. This is the art and science of travel.”

POLESTAR 2 REVEALED AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL

  • Experimental Polestar 2 pushes the boundaries of the electric performance fastback
  • Power turned up to 476 hp (350 kW)
  • Polestar 1 brake and wheel upgrade and heavily tuned suspension enhance handling characteristics
  • Chief chassis engineer Joakim Rydholm to tackle the Goodwood hill throughout event

Polestar has revealed an experimental Polestar 2 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The EV has been given a makeover that was inspired by CEO Thomas Ingenlath’s desire to push the boundaries of the electric performance fastback’s design and performance potential.

“I challenged the design and engineering teams to play with Polestar 2 and come up with something that makes a strong statement for Goodwood,” comments Ingenlath. “For a few months I have enjoyed driving another experimental Polestar 2, nicknamed ‘Beast,’ around our Gothenburg campus, which inspired the team to come up with this version for Goodwood. We want to flex our muscles and explore opportunities.”

The Long range Dual motor Polestar 2 now produces a combined output of 476 hp (350 kW) from its twin electric motors. The car has been given a stronger stance, with a wider track (+10 mm on each side) and lower ride height (-30 mm). Widened wheel arches have been fitted, required to house the 9×21-inch wheels and 6-piston Akebono front brakes from Polestar 1. The 275/30R21 Pirelli PZero Rosso performance tires are also carried over from Polestar 1.

The springs have been stiffened by 80% at the front and 40% at the rear compared to the original performance units, and the adjustable Öhlins DFV dampers have been upgraded to Öhlins three-way performance dampers which are approximately 30% stiffer than the road and track originals. To further increase rigidity, the carbon fiber front suspension strut bar from a Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered has been fitted, complemented by a custom-fabricated rear strut bar.

“This car is what happens when we are given freedom to go beyond our limits,” says Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s chief chassis engineer. “We already have such great handling and performance characteristics in Polestar 2, but when Thomas asked me to make something special for Goodwood, I was really excited to up the stakes.”

In addition to the mechanical upgrades, the car features updated front and rear bumpers. The car is finished in Snow Matte with a Magnesium Matte racing stripe, color-coded front grid and glossy black mirrors. Bumpers and side skirts feature an additional color-coded design accent. The wheels feature dual tonality of glossy and matte black surfaces.

Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar, comments: “It’s always exciting to push a little bit further. This is one of the benefits of being a start-up like Polestar—we don’t have a mould to fit into so we can experiment with fun projects like this.”

Hillclimb runs will be completed during the event and the experimental Polestar 2 can be found in the First Glance Paddock, adjacent to the Polestar stand. The car will be piloted by Polestar’s lead chassis engineer, Joakim Rydholm, who made his first appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2018 with the debut of the first driving prototype of Polestar 1.

Joakim Rydholm concludes: “Polestar 2 is already a wonderfully dynamic car and we have spent thousands of hours fine-tuning its driving characteristics. The new chassis set-up for Goodwood has really taken it to the next level. I can’t wait to go up the hill!”

L’FREAQ shreds her puppet strings – Gimmick

“Fans of FKA Twigs and Banks would be remiss not to check out synth-pop enchantress L’Freaq” -Billboard

L’FREAQ’s blend of gothic sensibilities and sultry soulfulness manages to continually hit the marks of bona de pop bangers.” -Nylon

L’FREAQ has a sexy, neo-goth, synth pop sound.” -Bust

“world-building music… colossal” -Refinery29

Today, LA-based dark-synth pop artist, L’FREAQ, shares a music video for her latest single “Gimmick,” the debut single from the forthcoming release and sophomore EP, Showgirl, due out on August 27, 2021 via Position Music. The first visual from the upcoming release is absolutely stacked with metaphor, all-star fashion, witchy vibes and an important message about the role media plays with children – especially young women. From puppet to powerhouse, L’FREAQ breaks free of the monotony and shreds through the brainwashed stereotypes, as she literally shreds on a guitar.

Describing the video, L’FREAQ says, “While the song is about my experience on a singing show and the judge who made me doubt myself, I wanted the video to have a bit of a darker message. My director and I, Shepherd Flashman Lowrey, came up with the idea to have a little girl watching me on a growing TV screen, a symbol for how the media consumes and controls us. I came up with the puppet master idea to go along with it, showing that what we see on our screens is not always what is happening in reality.”

The new track embodies the theme of resiliency in a time of self-doubt. “Gimmick” combines heart-pounding beats with passionate lyrics about believing in the power that everyone inherently owns and nobody else can take away, while and emphasizing L’FREAQ’s expansive “robust range” (Refinery29).

Describing the song L’FREAQ says, “After a grueling audition for a singing show in late 2019, I felt incredibly disempowered. One of the judges called me “gimmicky” and I felt as if my career had ended. What I didn’t realize was that this one person, one show, and one opportunity just wasn’t the right fit for me. After months struggling with mental health, I wrote this song as a way for me to empower myself and others, and a tongue in cheek diss to the judge that made me doubt my power.”

Having recently performed for Backline’s “Set Break” live stream alongside Alanis Morissette, Tom Morello, Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles and more to raise funds and awareness for mental health services to be distributed to music industry for free, L’FREAQ has been a champion for her community. This song is another chapter of that consistent commitment to rise up and bring people with her.

L’FREAQ, continues to remain an open book of emotions for fans as she lays out her own experience with rejection and struggles with mental health. L’FREAQ belts, “Got the courage to be vulnerable, got the guts to wear the crown, cause I dare to bare it all, I refuse to water down,” as a testament of truthfulness and self-confidence even when it’s hard. Intimacy on this level allows L’FREAQ to push the storyline forward when it comes to believing in dreams as a reality, especially in the face of adversity. NYLON says, “Look at L’FREAQ, draped in jewels and Cleopatra-esque eye makeup; then look a little harder. Behind the artifice, integrity abounds.”

L’FREAQ is all about being inclusive, and she is outspoken when it comes to defending the underdog. As an ally of everyone on the spectrum of gender and sexuality, bullies, racists and sexists are not allowed in L’FREAQ’s kingdom. She also shows her love for those closest to her, by highlighting their work: namely her fashion photographer mom, Kelly Cappelli (as seen in Vogue), who does all the photography and artwork for L’FREAQ.

The new release follows L’FREAQ’s debut EP, Weird Awakenings, which played with themes of self-discovery, as well as her 2021 single “Make Me Move.” Armed with a full book of poetry, L’FREAQ took pieces of her work and composed songs with Mike Irish, who also produced and mixed the EP at Shifted Recording Studios. The EP was mastered by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis London Music. They took their time in discovering a sound that felt genuine, one that explored all the raw places she had been longing to find. Together, they created a modern amalgamation of L’FREAQ’s dark, thoughtful poetry and her raw musical instincts, which inevitably alchemized into songs that are all at once aggressive, sensual and moving.

Having shared a stage with ABBA, India.Arie and Jakob Dylan, it’s important to note her live performance prowess, even without tour dates on the books (speaking of longing). L’FREAQ played a packed NYC performance debut at SoHo House, and channeled Britney Spears (especially during her ferocious “Toxic” cover”), Nick Cave and Beats Antique vibes. The Deli Magazine later dubbed her “NYC’s Favorite Emerging Artist.”

With over 500k streams, 240K plays on YouTube, and songs featured in “Riverdale,” Playboy, Netflix’s “Dating Around, “Good Trouble,” “FBI,” “The Voice,” “City on a Hill” and more – all born from her 5-song debut EP, it’s safe to say this follow-up EP is highly anticipated. Stay tuned for more visual components to follow, along with brand new singles. Showgirl is on the way.

LMB DG UNVEILS OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO – PULL UP

Today, LMB DG shared the official video for his breakthrough hit “Pull Up.” Charged with a raw, ominous energy, the clip captures the sense of foreboding that hangs over those who ride the streets of Los Angeles at night and offers up an unexpected plea for grace. View the video, which was directed by Picture Perfect (A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, French Montana, Cardi B), here.

Released in late 2020, “Pull Up” went viral after a friend of DG’s shared the swaggering song to his 530,000 TikTok followers. By early 2021, DG had signed a record deal. Combined global streams of “Pull Up” have now surpassed 30 million.

Download/Stream “Pull Up” here.

LMB DG was born to deliver the ghetto gospel, music for survivors. Fueled by memories of his troubled Los Angeles neighborhood and the years he spent honing a powerful voice in his church choir, the West Coast artist freely spills his soul over solemn trap beats. He delivers tales of tragedy, triumph, romance and everything between, creating anthems that sit at the intersection of despair and inspiration. “I put a lot of passion behind my words,” says DG, and it’s clear.

Born DeGabriel Floyd to a mother from Trinidad and Tobago and a father from Illinois, DG remembers riding around in the car with his dad listening to Boyz II Men and Michael Jackson. Inspired by their melodies, he began singing in church with his sister – but his first love was football. When he was only nine, DG’s father died of lung cancer. Inspired by his dad’s love of the game, DG began to focus on making his own gridiron dreams a reality. By his senior year of high school, the inside linebacker had become a four-star recruit and earned a full scholarship to play at the University of Texas. While preparing for his freshman season, DG learned that he had a congenital condition that narrows the spine. He announced his retirement in December 2019.

“It was like my life shattered,” DG recalls. “But something erupted out of me saying it’s going to be better. A bigger purpose is there.”

DG returned to music and, after his brother was incarcerated, he tried his hand at rapping. The emotion, the depth, the attention to detail… it all poured out into the poignant song “Long Nights,” released in 2020. While he began making music as a way of dealing with the curves life had thrown him, he’s grateful to know that others can relate and find inspiration in his music.

“I want you to understand what I’ve dealt with and understand that I’ve still achieved success,” says DG. “Now I know I’m not alone, and other people can know they’re not alone, too.”

PROTOJE In Search Of Lost Time album cover from Tiffany Mea - With Love PR, Sarah Weinstein Dennison - RCA Records Publicity for use by 360 Magazine

PROTOJE DROPS NEW VIDEO – SELF DEFENSE

One of today’s most influential reggae artists, Protoje, tells a tale of retribution in his brand new video for “Self Defense,” the single from his latest album In Search of Lost Time (In.Digg.Nation Collective/Six Course Music/RCA Records). The Jamaican lyricist addresses distrust in his country’s government and takes a vigilante approach to control the bad-minded people running the streets. The visual, directed by Rebecca Williams, shows a group of women taking matters into their own hands to expose a man of his horrific crime.

“This is one of my favorite songs from the album and I decided to do a video for it because I feel like I wanted it to be almost like a declaration or call to attention regarding how we treat our women, especially as men. I wanted the story to be told from a woman’s perspective – and that’s how I linked up with the director, Rebecca. She’s an awesome storyteller & I think she did a great job with this video,” Protoje states.

On the track, Protoje talks about the hypocrisies of a patriarchal system and how it supports domestic violence and abuse. “Me hear some man a say them rather rape than turn a gay. As if dem deh ting deh related in any way. You nuh see say a some sicko them mentality. The patriarchy propagate all of them fallacy. Even in the church the violation prevalent Jehovah, you nuh witness, tell me that no relevant. Dem deh business cyaa exist inna we regiment. A self-defense and we no hesitant.”

Protoje is no stranger calling out misogyny and has made a concerted effort to help shift that paradigm. Within his own industry, he has signed and supported an all-female roster of Jamaican artists including Sevana, Lila Iké and Jaz Elise through his label and artist management company In.Digg.Nation Collective to represent the full spectrum of talent that his island has to offer.

Protoje’s fifth studio album In Search of Lost Time stays in rotation since its release on August 28, 2020. He colored outside the lines for a cinematic, ethereal, multi-genre LP and executive produced the entire project and co-produced five out of the thirteen original tracks. Now the vinyl edition to In Search of Lost Time is available for pre-order with shipments expected in September.

About Protoje:

Born and raised in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica to singer Lorna Bennett and former calypso king Mike Ollivierre, Protoje blends hip hop, soul and jazz into his native sounds of reggae and dancehall. The musical prodigy, along with a collective of fellow artists, began getting mainstream attention for their addictive melodies and conscious lyrical messages in a movement dubbed the “reggae revival.” Publications such as VOGUERolling StoneThe FADER, and PAPER have declared him one of the brightest talents out of Jamaica. His catalog consists of the following studio albums: Seven Year Itch (2011), The 8 Year Affair (2013), Ancient Future (2015) and A Matter Of Time (2018) and In Search Of Lost Time (2020). As a producer, he receives a co-credit for Rock & Groove Riddim (2019). His studio album A Matter Of Time earned him his first GRAMMY nomination for Best Reggae Album and his national U.S. TV debut performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, both in 2019. He has toured with Ms. Lauryn Hill and appeared on major festivals including Coachella (US), Glastonbury (UK), Afropunk (US), Reading & Leeds (UK), Sole DXB (Dubai) and Lollapalooza (Chile), reaching audiences far and wide with his genre-fusing sound. In 2020, the musician signed an unprecedented major deal with RCA Records in partnership with Six Course Records and his label and management company In.Digg.Nation Collective. Under the RCA deal, Protoje brokered individual album deals for himself as well as his rising female artists Lila Iké, Sevana and Jaz Elise. He has received praise from the likes of NYLON and Uproxx for In.Digg.Nation Collective’s forward-thinking sound. He performed on NPR Tiny Desk and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert #PlayAtHome and graces one of i-D magazine’s digital covers for Spring 2021.

FACE to Kick-off LA County Youth Work AAPI Outreach

FACE to Kick-off LA County Youth@ Work AAPI Outreach Initiative To Address Racial Equity Gap in Services to AAPI Community

10,000 Internships In LA County and Private Employers

FACE will be joined by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair, Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District, LA County Department of Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services (WDACS), other County Departments, business partners, and youth participants to launch FACE’s AAPI Youth@Work program as part of its AAPI Career Pathways Initiative to reach more AAPI youth. The AAPI population make up 15% of the county population, yet only 3% of the Youth@Work are AAPI students. This initiative in partnership with WDACS is aimed at addressing this gap.

Youth@Work prepares underserved youth ages 14-24 who live in LA County for jobs and careers. The 120-hour internship provides students job training opportunities depending on their interest with one of 40 different departments in Los Angeles County or with private and nonprofit companies. Participants are paid $15/hour. In person and virtual job opportunities are available. Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with mentors and to attend leadership seminars.

Youth@Work pairs paid work experience for youth with a comprehensive and strategic set of employment, training, and support services provided through the County’s network of America’s Job Centers of California (AJCC).

Hyepin Im, FACE President & CEO, stated, “This past pandemic year, with over 6600 reported hate incidents only against AAPI, new awareness has risen of the disparities, suffering, and racial inequities experienced by AAPI communities.  Despite high educational attainment by many AAPI groups, they experience the lowest rates of being promoted to management. Our AAPI Youth@Work Initiative in partnership with LA County WDACS will allow a pathway for many AAPI youth to achieve their full potential. On behalf of FACE, we are thankful to partner with LA County to offer this excellent opportunity and also address the gap of low AAPI participation in the Youth@Work Program.

Fresh off the heels of the announcement of their highly anticipated debut album, The Band Camino returns with a nostalgic visual for their latest single, Know It All. The video was directed by Andrew Arthur and edited by longtime visual collaborator Patrick Tracy. WATCH HERE.

Featured by Rolling Stone and coined ‘ear-candy’ by Idobi Radio, the single reflects on an old relationship and the accompanying video follows the trio on an adventure through New York City.

Since their debut in 2016, The Band Camino have continued to push boundaries as a rock band for the pop generation with their electrifying guitar anthems including fan favorites Daphne Blue and See Through. Their infectious latest singles 1 Last Cigarette, Know It All, Sorry Mom, and Roses kick off an exciting next chapter for the band and offer only a glimpse of what can be expected on their forthcoming album. This fall, the Nashville-based trio will also hit the road in support of country duo Dan + Shay on their 2021 U.S. tour, from September 9 – December 7. In addition, the band secured a coveted slot at this year’s Bonnaroo festival in Nashville, Tennessee on September 4. Most recently, they made their late-night debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live with their performance of 1 Last Cigarette.

Their full-length debut entitled The Band Camino will arrive September 10 via dblblk/Elektra Records. Pre-order here.
