After unprecedented worldwide success on his debut single Hadal Ahbek, breakout Jordanian pop phenomenon Issam Alnajjar releases his new single Mn Gheirik Enti today via Universal Arabic Music.
Mn Gheirik Enti, which translates to “without you” in English, is a catchy and energetic love song about your partner accepting you for who you are, flaws and all. Issam smoothly sings over bouncy acoustic guitar, percussion, and hand claps, as the tempo picks up in the chorus, and he exclaims, “I keep asking myself what’s missing? How did you approve of me with all my flaws? Me, whose life is upside down. Without you, without you.” The video shows Issam’s growth as an artist and songwriter, as he takes center stage and proclaims his love.
On the inspiration behind the song, Issam says, “This song means so much to me. I wrote it from a personal experience I had. Also, it’s another chapter of my journey from Hadal Ahbek. I am very proud of it, and I hope you all enjoy my hard work behind it.”
Mn Gheirik Enti is the follow-up single to Issam’s global viral hit Hadal Ahbek, released earlier this year. Over the course of a few months, his debut single has amassed over 41 million Spotify streams and 3 billion sound views on TikTok, and the official video has garnered 11 million views on YouTube. The live performance video also has over 80 million views and counting. Earlier this spring, Issam teamed up with Loud Luxury and Ali Gatie on their collaboration Turning Me Up (Hadal Ahbek), which has 14 million-plus Spotify streams to date. The song continues to climb the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay Chart and Billboard Canada CHR/Top 40 Chart, currently sitting at #27 and #11, respectively. Not to mention, last month, he joined forces with R3HAB for Hadal Ahbek (R3HAB Club Remix).
The 17-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist has made history with Hadal Ahbek, as it is the first Arabic song to explode worldwide as a viral #1 hit. Upon release, the track peaked at #1 on Spotify’s US and Global Viral 50 Charts and Shazam’s Top 200 Global Chart, as well as reached Top 20 spots on Apple Music’s Global Hits and Viral Hits Playlists. On the international stage, it hit #1 on Spotify’s Viral Chart in 25 local markets, including UK, Canada, Germany, France, and Mexico, and #1 on Shazam’s Top 200 Chart in 24 local markets. The irresistible bop has arrived as a cross-continental anthem and cements Issam Alnajjar as an international artist to watch in 2021.
ABOUT ISSAM ALNAJJAR
Issam Alnajjar is leading the way for a new generation of artists from the Middle East and North Africa to take over the global music scene. A 17-year-old musician from Amman, Jordan, he had been creating music for a couple of years, studying the songwriting of pop artists like Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran and admiring the creativity of iconic artists like Queen and The Weeknd, when he got some inspiration for his breakout hit Hadal Ahbek. After dropping a preview video for the song on Instagram, anticipation from his fans grew larger and larger. By the time he finally released Hadal Ahbek, with Issam’s silky voice and infectious lyrics and melody, the popularity of it exceeded his expectations. Issam says he had only expected 10k views total for his song. That was shattered in one day, and eventually it grew to 100k views a week. And on TikTok, the song only grew bigger and now sits atop dozens of music charts on Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer. For any artist to have a top song is an accomplishment. But what makes Issam’s feat more incredible is that he achieved this with a song sung in Arabic.
The Heavy Hours releases cover of Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now, building anticipation for their debut EP which will be released August 3.
“Hitting a mid-1970s pop-rock sweet spot, this fab debut from Cincinnati newcomers was produced by Simone Felice and co-written with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. The band more than lives up to such illustrious company.” – The Times of London
“Unbelievably catchy lines and effortlessly organic arrangement.” – American Songwriter
The Heavy Hours, from Cincinnati, OH, announced the August 3 release date of their debut EP, Wildfire. The band also shares their cover version of Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now. Both the EP and song were produced by Simone Felice (The Lumineers, Jade Bird, Matt Maeson) and produced and mixed by David Baron. Don’t Start Now, released through BMG, is available for streaming and download.
The band said about the cover song, “Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now is the essence of pop music production; a cacophony of synthesizers, elaborate and squishy bass lines, and outer-space dipped vocals… however, it all comes down to the vocal melody, which – just STICKS in your brain. We’ve always worked at and wanted to re-imagine a pop anthem like this in our own production style – using acoustic guitars, upright pianos, shakers, and other analog technology. We’re really excited to release our cut of the tune to see if listeners enjoy our version just as much as Dua Lipa’s.”
The cover of Don’t Stop Now is not included on the Wildfire EP, which contains five original songs from the band and includes the previously released song Don’t Walk Away which was co-written with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach.
On top of the music announcement, the band is pleased to announce some tour dates, starting with an EP release day show at Madison Live! in Covington, KY, across the river from their hometown in Cincinnati.
Adopting the band’s name from a line in William Butler Yeats’ Autobiographies, The Heavy Hours emerged, eager to explore a long-standing fascination with time-honored songwriting and production. Their music soon made its way to Dan Auerbach, who invited his fellow Ohioans to visit his Easy Eye Sound headquarters in Nashville for a few days of collaborative songwriting. The sessions were both productive and a revelation, inspiring the band to strip away some of their previous artifice in order to touch a more universal chord. Armed with a cache of new songs and innumerable ideas, The Heavy Hours traveled to rural Catskills in New York state, to record under the aegis of producer Simone Felice. The winter sessions proved incredibly fruitful, yielding a collection of distinctive new music that serves as an undeniable milestone on The Heavy Hours’ ongoing creative journey.

Whether you enjoy relaxing with a decadent glass of sweet red wine after a long day of work, find yourself waiting for Friday evening so you can finally indulge in a good vintage, or prefer fruity white wines from time to time, there a few things ways to take your love for wine to a new level. On the other hand, if you don’t particularly enjoy the beloved grape beverage, these ten tips will give you great gift ideas for the wine connoisseur in your life.
A Few Good Bottles
As a wine connoisseur, you won’t want to head to the store each time you feel like indulging in a glass. Instead, having a few bottles in storage is ideal. You should get a selection that boasts some variety, so you can decide which type of wine you want to indulge in at that moment. It is a great idea to have a quality bottle of all your favorite types of wines. Remember that correct storage is essential, even if you don’t plan on starting a valuable collection.
An Ordinary Corkscrew
Even though you can open a wine bottle without a corkscrew, having one is the most simple way to open a bottle of wine. There are tons of variants on the market, so consider searching for a fancy design–especially if you are gifting a wine lover. However, the ordinary plain corkscrew is usually adequate when it comes to opening a bottle of wine without cracking the glass, breaking your nails, or facing frustration.
A 36-Piece Wine Glass Set
The average wine lover can identify a wine glass. However, only a wine connoisseur would know that there are several variations of wine glasses, and that each is suitable for a different type of wine. Whether you enjoy vintage wines, sweet reds, zesty whites, or rich dry reds, a complete 36-piece wine glass set will ensure that you always have the right glass. The shape of the glass does have a minor impact on the overall taste of the wine, which is why there are so many variations of wine glasses out there.
Foil Cutter
A foil cutter will prevent you from ever ruining your manicure while removing the foil from a bottle upon opening. These innovative devices are relatively cheap and easy to find online, and greatly enhance the process of opening a bottle of mouthwatering wine. The small cost of a foil cutter will save you a small fortune in time and money when it comes to preserving your nails as well.
Wine Veils
Wine veils are perfect for any wine lover that prefers to indulge in their drink while outside. Because quality wine often has a rich aroma, small bugs will find your drink quite attractive. To avoid the unpleasant experience of accidentally swallowing a tiny bug, invest in a few wine veils to protect your beverage while outdoors. These essential wine lover items are not too pricey and are available in various colors and patterns.
A Wine Cooler
Unless you are prepared to head down to the local store each time you feel like having a glass of wine, a wine cooler an essential item for any wine connoisseur. It is not the best solution to store your wines in the fridge, as the temperature is too cold and will change the taste of wine. When reserving a few bottles for more than a week, a cooler is essential.
Wine Glass Charms
Wine glass charms are by no means essentials, although they are incredibly dainty and pretty. These charms can transform your preferred glass by personalizing it. You will be able to find single wine glass charms in endless variations. You can also find these glass accessories in sets. They are the perfect gifts for wine lovers, and with all the variations out there, you can find the unique, niche charms with a simple online search.
Wine Decanter
A wine decanter can enhance your wine’s aroma and color. They also make pouring a glass of wine much easier. There are various decanter designs out there, although it is recommended to opt for one that is dishwasher safe as it will be significantly less fragile. A wine decanter is the best way to store the rest of the bottle’s content if you are only indulging in one or two glasses.
Wine Bottle Stopper
Suppose you don’t like the idea of a wine decanter and prefer to keep your wine in its original bottle– you may already have realized how difficult it is to get the cork back in after removal. Instead of attempting to re-cork the bottle, opt for a wine bottle stopper that acts as a reusable cork, sealing your bottle and keeping your wine fresh. Be sure to get a quality bottle stopper, as inferior qualities may not be crafted from suitable materials and can alter the flavor of your wine.
Red Wine Stain Remover
Every red wine lover out there has encountered a stubborn red wine stain. These same wine lovers have probably lost the fight after trying to remove it with an endless variety of cleaning detergents. Luckily, there are products out there that are made to remove stubborn red wine stains, such as the red wine stain remover. It will be worth it to purchase a bottle of this cleaning product, just in case you happen to spill a glass.
There are tons of fantastic products out there that will enhance your experience as a wine connoisseur. It is always best to invest in quality items–whether purchasing a bottle stopper, a wine glass charm, or an ordinary corkscrew. Because wine products may affect the flavor and aroma of your beverage, quality is always an important consideration– just as it is when purchasing your perfect, preferred bottle of wine.

Beautiful Bespoke Phantom Collection Car debuts in Southern California marking a special occasion for its owners
Glenn and Gigi Moss celebrate 40th anniversary with a light and dark duo of Rolls-Royce commissions
Discreet message on each commission marks the time and place they met and the time and place they wed
Rolls-Royce delivers commissions in private ceremony in Orange County, California
“Rolls-Royce Phantom Tempus is a motor car for those who shape the world as they seek their own place in the universe. They understand that whatever our individual gifts, talents, and opportunities, we are all gifted time – and it is up to us to make the most of every precious moment. With Phantom Tempus, we have created a space in which the strictures of time no longer apply – as illustrated by the deliberate absence of a clock. Rolls-Royce clients are not bound by time; the outside world with all its pressures and demands are forgotten. We offer our congratulations to Glenn and Gigi Moss, not only on their years together, but also on these two beautiful Rolls-Royces, commissioned to mark this special occasion.” – Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
“I could think of no better way to mark a special moment in time in Gigi and my life together than with this duo of Rolls-Royce commissions. The beauty of commissioning a Rolls-Royce is in making it personal and intimate. Phantom Tempus provided us with a wonderful canvas to personalize the painting of our lives together. And the addition of the Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge commission is a statement to celebrate the fact that we will carry our passion for life long into the future. Some things are timeless, and this is what we celebrate.” – Glenn L. Moss Sr
Rolls-Royce Phantom, the marque’s pinnacle product, resides at the apex of the luxury world. Producing a Collection Car is always a seminal moment for the marque. With the Phantom Tempus Collection, the sources of inspiration are on an appropriately grand scale: time, deep space, and a theoretical physicist who changed the way to see the universe. Only 20 examples of this stunning Bespoke creation have been built at Rolls-Royce’s Global Center of Luxury Manufacturing Excellence in West Sussex, England.
To mark a very special moment in time, their 40th anniversary, Riverside California residents Glenn and Gigi Moss, have commissioned one of these rare and spectacular cars for themselves. Their Phantom Tempus was delivered to them at an exclusive celebration, together with a special Bespoke Dawn Black Badge. The beautiful pair of Bespoke Rolls-Royce’s were delivered to Mr. and Mrs. Moss by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Orange County.
The inspiration for this pair of Bespoke commissions arose from the Moss’ desire to celebrate the moment in time at which their life together began. The Phantom Tempus’ Bespoke Spirit of Ecstasy is made of solid silver, with the location and date the couple first met in 1976 engraved into the base of the statuette. Additionally, latitudinal, and longitudinal coordinates mark the precise location. Discreetly etched into the base of the black carbon fiber Spirit of Ecstasy which graces the prow of the Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge, is the date and location where the couple wed in 1981.
Phantom Tempus: One of 20 for Glenn L. Moss Sr
The exterior of Mr. Moss’ Phantom Tempus is presented in a bright and stunning Crystal over Arctic White. The couple chose the bright color to signify the light and infinite nature of time in their marriage. This brilliant finish is highlighted by a hand-painted black coachline, and detailing.
Upon opening the coach doors, an illuminated treadplate reads, ‘Phantom Tempus Collection — Hand built in Goodwood England for Glenn L. Moss Sr.’ The interior of the Moss Phantom Tempus carries over the ‘light’ theme with Arctic White hand-crafted leather offset by black highlights, piping, and contrast stitching. The fascia is finished in black Sparkle Piano reminiscent of the deep darkness of space glittering with the timeless brightness of the constellations.
Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge: Bespoke for Gigi Moss
In addition to creating a very personal Phantom Tempus, Mr. Moss asked the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to create a singular Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge for Mrs. Moss. With an exterior finish of Crystal over Bright Red, the vibrant swathe of color stands in stark contrast to the bright white hues of the Phantom Tempus. Equipped with a Bespoke Aero Cowling, the four-seater convertible quickly and stylishly transforms into a sleek two-seater roadster.
The Spirit of Ecstasy that adorns the bonnet is milled from black, high-gloss carbon fiber. This transformation to a darker aesthetic extends to certain chrome surfaces including the front grille surround, luggage compartment lid finisher, exhaust pipes and air inlet finisher. The ‘Double R’ signifiers on the Rolls-Royce badges are inverted in color, a key signifier that this car is a Rolls-Royce Black Badge model, representing the alter ego of the brand. The car’s rims are created using 22 layers of carbon fiber folded and formed to provide an aggressive style.
Complementing the treadplate of Phantom Tempus, the treadplate for this Dawn Black Badge reads ‘Hand built in Goodwood England for Gigi Moss’. The hand-crafted interior of the car is finished in full natural grain leather with black highlights and piping. The Rolls-Royce monogram is embroidered on each headrest as is the ‘Unlimited’ infinity logo which is embroidered on the Dawn’s upholstery. The centrepiece of the Black Badge cabin is the aerospace-grade, aluminum-threaded carbon fiber composite surfacing material. The air vents are darkened using the Physical Vapor Deposition process. This surfacing method is utilized to ensure that the parts will neither discolor nor tarnish over time.
This Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge commission provides a stunning, darker ‘alter-image’ to the light and infinite nature of Phantom Tempus, leaving the couple with a lasting memory of their very special relationship.
Phantom Tempus Collection
The design of the Phantom Tempus Collection encompasses various aesthetic and intellectual themes relating to time and the cosmos. A key component is a rare astronomical phenomenon, the pulsar, unknown until 1967 and found only in the deepest reaches of space (the nearest yet discovered is 280 light years, or 1,680 trillion miles, from Earth). These very dense, white-hot stars emit electromagnetic radiation in extremely regular pulses, making them some of the most accurate clocks in the universe.
In the Phantom Tempus Collection, this remarkable force of nature is rendered as a centerpiece in a Bespoke Starlight Headliner consisting of fiber-optic lighting and intricate Bespoke embroidery, creating the unique and beautiful Pulsar Headliner.
Another aspect of time – the illusion of its standing still – is captured in the ‘Frozen Flow of Time’ Gallery. This unique artwork is housed in the fascia from which the clock is deliberately omitted to signify patrons’ freedom from time and its limitations. A single billet of aluminum is milled to form 100 individually contoured columns, representing the 100-million-year period of a rotational spin of a pulsar star. Each column is black-anodized and hand-polished to reflect the light and set against an Arctic White background. As the eye travels along it, the whole structure, though entirely solid, appears to ripple and flex.
A description of the Gallery can be found on an engraved plaque in the glove compartment, together with a quotation from Albert Einstein, “The distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion”.
A swirling, twisting pattern of stars is presented on the interior of the doors. Created by hundreds of illuminated perforations, additional perforations in contrasting leather add a greater depth and detail to the effect, providing an atmospheric aura even when not illuminated.

Clubs & Competition (on display now)
In the early part of the 20th century, motorcycle culture was a homegrown phenomenon. It grew out of the passion of riders for their evolving sport. The camaraderie that developed around riding and attending competitive events led to the formation of motorcycle clubs that hosted destination rides, family picnics with motorcycle games and other riding competitions.
The newly reinstalled display case in the Clubs & Competition gallery highlights clothing from club members from primarily the 1930s and 1940s. The clothing selections on view include full dress uniforms, shirts, sweaters, jackets and caps, customized by the owners with their club name and logo, and pins or patches indicating membership in the American Motorcyclist Association. The H-D Archives™ collection includes Motorclothes® apparel sold in H-D® product catalogs but also non-H-D produced clothing items that have been proudly customized by riders.
Experience Gallery: Model Year 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycles (on display July 20)
Always a favorite photo opportunity for riders and non-riders alike, the H-D Museum’s Experience Gallery has been refreshed with five 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycles –including the all-new Pan America™!
Harley Fox (on display now)
Gail Anderson’s 1986 Softail® Custom motorcycle, “Harley Fox,” built by her partner Bob Burrows, took top prize at the first Ladies of Harley® (LOH) ride-in show during Daytona Beach Bike Week in 1987. With her custom bike and themed riding gear, Anderson presented a striking image that fit the growing visibility and exciting new options for women riders in the 1980s.
Alfonso Sotomayor’s 1957 Model FL (on display now)
The Harley-Davidson Museum is proud to announce its collection has recently grown with the addition of a 1957 Model FL that was ridden by famed Mexican stunt rider and racer Alfonso Sotomayor Canales.
Harley-Davidson’s history in Mexico dates back to at least 1913. In the 1920s, the brand was more frequently spotted throughout Mexico City as the motorcycles proved popular with the local traffic police who would also perform stunts with their Harley-Davidson® bikes. After racing from the 1930s into the 1960s, Sotomayor launched his own stunt riding career by performing the famed “Salto de la Muerte” or Jump of Death. Learn more about Sotomayor’s feats of derring-do and Harley-Davidson’s early entry into Mexico with this new display located in the Custom Culture area.
In the decades before America paved its highways, early riders had to be prepared for all sorts of terrain: sand, clay or dirt – and wandering those makeshift byways were Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Today, it’s called off-road or adventure touring; back then it was just called riding. Since 1903, Harley-Davidson motorcycles proved their toughness by riding over wooded hills, through stone-choked creek beds and up mountain sides. “Off-Road Harley-Davidson” tells the history of motorcycles designed for rough roads, the people who rode them and the adventures they shared.
A recently recovered cache of architectural drawings includes plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. The pencil drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson.
“Building a Milwaukee Icon” provides a snapshot of Harley-Davidson’s formative years and illustrates a chapter of Milwaukee history when the city was known as the “Machine Shop to the World.”
The first new motorcycle of the Great Depression was a bit of a gamble for Harley-Davidson. Introducing what would eventually be known as the “knucklehead” engine, the 1936 EL was a pivotal model that continues to influence H-D® motorcycles today.

“Luciela,”an incredibly moving short film about a young girl who gets reminded how her family has been torn apart on her favorite holiday, premiered today on the PBS Short Film Festival running from July 12-23. The film, directed by Erin Ploss-Campoamor, is available now on all PBS and station digital platforms, including PBS.org, YouTube and the PBS Video App and is a co-production of Mare’s Hoof Production and Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB). Click HERE to watch Luciela. The short tells the story of a fiercely independent Mexican-American girl who loves the 4th of July because every year her Papi throws a huge party. He does one of the best firework shows in Lincoln Heights, their immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles which delights all. But this year he can’t, because he’s been deported. So Luciela decides to set off a few sparks of her own.
“I first conceived of this story a few years ago. A friend invited me to her home in Lincoln Heights, to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. If you are not familiar with Lincoln Heights, it is a mostly Latinx, mostly immigrant neighborhood, up in the hills of Los Angeles,” shared filmmaker Erin Ploss-Campoamor. “It felt especially poignant that I was experiencing this in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, knowing that immigrant rights were actively under threat and xenophobia was on the rise. I loved that this community was celebrating our country’s Independence Day so loudly and proudly. Filling the sky, saying, “See us! Hear us! We are here! From that experience, the seeds of this story were planted.”
“Luciela” represents the experiences of many children whose families live in the shadow of deportation,” shares Sandie Viquez Pedlow, Executive Director of Latino Public Broadcasting. “Sadly, this is an unfortunate reality in our country. Latino Public Broadcasting is proud to work with Erin Ploss-Campoamor to bring films such as “Luciela” to the forefront and hopefully create a better understanding of these divisive issues and the consequences to our young children.”
The festival features 25 short-form independent films presented in six categories: culture, family, humanity, identity, race and society. And for the first time in the festival’s history, all 25 films will be presented in virtual reality, accessible on any VR device. Audiences can also use a computer without a headset and still look around 360 degrees.
About The PBS Short Film Festival
The PBS Short Film Festival is part of a multiplatform initiative to increase the reach and visibility of independent filmmakers from across the country and amplify the voices of diverse content creators. Since its inception in 2012, hundreds of films celebrating love, acceptance, family, strength, equality, friendship, loyalty and more have been presented under the festival’s banner. The 2021 festival carries the tagline “A Decade of Being Seen” as a reminder that the festival has always striven to amplify the untold stories of America.
Starting at midnight on Monday, July 12, audiences can watch and share all 25 films. In addition, a panel of nine jury members will select their favorite film of the festival for the Juried Prize. Jury members are respected professionals in independent film and public media and were invited by PBS to participate.

Pyer Moss First Couture Show WAT U IZ: Historic Tribute To Black Inventors
By: Kai Yeo
“We are an invention inside of an invention. Inside of the creation of race, we made blackness. Uprooted from home and put in a foreign land, we made culture. And when they tried to strip our humanity, we made freedom so tethered to each other that it still shapes the world today.” – Pyer Moss show notes.
Kerby-Jean Raymond’s Pyer Moss label has unveiled his first-ever couture collection. The award-winning designer and creative director is the first Black American designer to be invited to present during Haute Couture Week, a historical achievement made even more successful by making his collection a tribute to Black inventors. All Pyer Moss shows attract interest, but this show had more buzz because of his exclusive invite by France’s Chambre Syndicale to show a collection, with officials in Paris extending the length of Couture Week to accommodate the rescheduled show due to Hurricane Elsa.
The Pyer Moss Couture 1 couture show, WAT U IZ, was opened by the last surviving member of Black Panther leadership and civil rights champion Elaine Brown. The setting was deeply significant: Villa Lewaro, an early 20th century mansion in Irvington, NY, built by Madam CJ Walker. Madam CJ Walker was American’s first self-made female millionaire and her estate served as a gathering place for leaders of the renaissance (her story is also on Netflix). Now, Elaine Brown’s words herald another landmark moment for black culture while celebrating the Black Panther’s 55th Anniversary.
The 28,000-square-foot estate, designed by Vertner Woodson Tandy (the first licensed black architect in New York State, and one of the seven founders of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Cornell University), was recently purchased by the New Voices Foundation for an undisclosed amount. The foundation is the nonprofit branch of the New Voices Fund, a $100 million investment fund dedicated to entrepreneurs following in Walker’s footsteps. Both the fund and the foundation were created by Richelieu Dennis, who was seated at the front row at Pyer Moss.
“Where do we go from here? Where does the freedom movement go from here?” activist Elaine Brown opens the show quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but she also seemed to be reflecting on the history being made at the very moment. Jean Raymond, whose shows always entwine his ideas about fashion with those about culture, race, and society, said in an interview that his goal was “to highlight inventions by Black people and show them in a non-traditional way,” involving 3D construction and sculpture.
And so, there was the peanut butter dress, literally a huge, soft sculpted jar honoring George Washington Carver. The stunning roller cape that took two weeks to create, featuring hot rollers from head to toe. Each one wound round and round with strands of fake hair. An air-conditioning unit, a kitchen mop, an old-fashioned mobile phone he remembers his father carrying, a childhood ice cream cone. There was a pastel pink lampshade dress with beaded fringes, a metal folding chair, every single costume a sophisticated work of culture. And there was a refrigerator with magnets that spelled out, “But who invented Black trauma?” Each soft sculpture in the Pyer Moss couture show correlated to an invention on a list that designer Jean-Raymond had seen at the Library of Congress attributed to a Black individual. All the inventions Jean-Raymond chose from to celebrate spoke to his lived experiences, a beautiful show reminiscent of a masquerade ball or art installation.
Jean Raymond talks about paying homage to his Black culture, “I want people to experience Black wealth in not a dirty thing. It is one of several means to an end – this house, inventions, creativity, ingenuity, all of those things are pathways to that sort of economic independence. I’ve said a lot of things at my shows. I’ve talked about mental health, multiple prong approaches to liberation, and this is just one of them.” Richelieu Dennis will help oversee the transition of restoring the villa and making it an incubator and center for Black women artists and women-run businesses. Just as once upon a time the villa was a center for the artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance, the sculptured garments of Pyer Moss will eventually be part of an exhibit inside Villa Lewaro.
