Jenesse Center Awarded $250,000 Grant

Domestic violence prevention and intervention charity, Jenesse Center was awarded a grant for $250,000 by the Everychild Foundation.

Everychild Foundation has funded nearly $19 million in projects directly serving the children of Los Angeles including after-school programs, child abuse prevention, a mobile dental program, juvenile diversion programs, assistance to foster youth, a universally accessible playground, and more.

“The Everychild grant comes with impeccable timing given the dire challenges of COVID-19,” said Jenesse Director of Family Wellness, Charmine Davis, PsyD. “It builds our hope that we will continue to have the capacity to bring culturally sensitive, trauma-informed services to our clients, most of whom are kids”, Davis added.

The Los Angeles-based foundation, whose tagline is “Women Reinventing Philanthropy”, is composed of over 200 local women, who eschew costly fundraisers. Instead, in a typical year, members contribute dues which are then pooled to award a single $1 million dollar grant to a local child-related agency to fund a new, innovative replicable project. But with the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has chosen to temporarily adjust its grantmaking model and instead award multiple operating grants to assist local non-profits who have seen dramatic increases in demand for their services.

According to Jacqueline Caster, Everychild Founder and President, “Our members recognized that we had to pivot and respond to the incredible amount of need due to the hardships imposed on local families as a result of the pandemic. Jenesse Center is one of the agencies doing some of the most important work in the community to address these needs as the crisis has led to dramatic increases in domestic abuse.”

Karen Earl said, ” With mothers bringing multiple children to the center, many people do not realize the majority of our clients at Jenesse are children. Jenesse is profoundly grateful to do this important work for children and families to break the cycle of violence. The generous grant from Everychild Foundation will ensure a significant impact in our work to secure and protect children from trauma and violence.”

JONAH NILSSON — “DIAMOND RING”

Jonah Nilsson, lead vocalist for Dirty Loops, a major YouTube sensation, has teamed up with guitar legend Steve Vai the new single “Diamond Ring,” out today on Jammcard Records. “Diamond Ring” showcases Nilsson’s incomparable vocal range and stylings accompanied by an incredible guitar solo from Vai, the hero of shredding. Even music icon Quincy Jones, who is a huge fan and champion of Nilsson, makes an appearance in the music video. You can listen to “Diamond Ring” HERE.

“He’s different though, he’s got the perfect balance of right brain creativity and left brain music theory. It’s in his blood,” praises Quincy Jones. “He’s got soul, with one of the biggest ranges I’ve ever heard.”

Quincy discovered the Swedish singer and multi-instrumentalist through his work with Dirty Loops, taking Jonah under the wing of his management team for a solo record, due out later this summer. “Diamond Ring” also features Kristian Kraftling (keys), Jesper the Creator (guitar), Kefa Figaro (drums) and Tobias Grenholm (bass).

“I’m so so excited to present this song that has been in the works for a long time!” Jonah shares. “It’s a very dance-friendly song with lots of fun musical elements with Steve Vai ending the song with a crazy solo! I thought to myself, this song needs the most epic, crazy, guitar-hero solo possible and there is only one person who could’ve delivered that. STEVE VAI!”

Jonah and Steve, both powerhouses in their respective talents, ran in similar circles in the music industry, and ultimately bonded over their common interest as master multi-instrumental musicians. They decided to work on “Diamond Ring” together, giving the song a genre-defying edge that blends rock, soul, R&B, funk and pop together under one roof.

“There’s a new breed of brilliant evolutionary musicians breaking onto the scene, and this track is the evidence,” Vai says. “It takes pop to another dimension of groove, musicality and overall bad-assery. It’s amazeballs.”

“Diamond Ring” follows Jonah’s recent cover of the Michael Jackson classic “Bad,” where he adds his own spin and signature technique to create a version that’s more powerful than ever. “Bad” features Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Anomalie and Justin Lee Schultz. Jonah’s take on “Bad” beams with all the elements of a worldwide pop star in the making, while paying homage to the soul and spirit that originally made the track a hit in 1987, and adding a modern flavor that gives this version an entire life of its own.

The funk-pop artist has come a long way since his childhood dreams of becoming an artist. Singing has been part of his life essentially since birth. Jonah started singing at his parent’s church choir at the tender age of one. Then, at the onset of his skyrocketing career, Jonah’s life changed overnight when he and a couple long-time friends uploaded their own covers of huge pop hits like Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and Justin Bieber’s “Baby” to Youtube. The unique covers spread like wildfire in the music community, garnered them millions of views, and got them the attention of many acclaimed artists, namely 16x Grammy Award winning producer David Foster. David took them under his wing and signed the trio named Dirty Loops to their first record deal at Verve Records. And just like that, Jonah went from singing in his friend’s basement to becoming an international touring star.

Jonah has made a name for himself through his pop sensibilities and masterful knowledge of music theory from his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, which set him apart in this new democratized era in which almost anyone can call themselves an artist.

Since Jonah’s early rise to fame, he’s since got a few headliner world tours under his belt and has acquired a significant fanbase of high-profile musicians, including Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine, Brian McKnight, Rodney Jerkins, Dallas Austin and the incredible Stevie Wonder. Even though that’s enough for some, Jonah’s humble demeanor continues to push him forward. His cheery outlook on life gives you the sense he’s unfazed and ready to continue giving the gift of music.

Jonah’s debut single, “Coffee Break,” featuring Richard Bona, was self-produced and released in 2018 one version which also features LUCAS from the massively popular K-pop group NCT and released by SM Entertainment. Since then, he has also released a cinematic single “Borrowed Time” and the jaw-dropping performance video of “Work Shit Out” with Dirty Loops. Jonah will continue to share new music, and when asked about how his music will differ from Dirty Loops, he says that the music will continue to have the flirtatious and cheeky sound that they were notorious for, but with more R&B and pop elements.

“I never in a million years thought I’d be here,” confesses Jonah. His piercing blue eyes and huge smile gives you the feeling that he’s wholeheartedly telling the truth. “Living in the present has kept my feet on the ground. I just want to create meaningful music… everything else that happens is extra.”

My OTC Heartburn Med Landed Me In The Hospital!

By: Mark Ratner, MD, Chief Science Officer, Theralogix

I woke up suddenly at 2 a.m. – my heart was racing and pounding in my chest. I’d been a physician for 30 years, so I instantly knew something was really wrong. I woke my wife and said, “I think we need to get to the ER.”

Thirty minutes later, I was on a gurney, hooked up to an EKG (electrocardiogram), looking up at an ER (emergency room) doctor that I had known for years. My heart had developed a sudden arrhythmia, despite the fact that I had no prior history of heart disease. I was given a dose of medication intravenously, and thankfully – my heart’s rhythm immediately returned to normal.

A few minutes later, my bloodwork revealed that I had a very low magnesium level – which most likely had caused the abnormal heart rhythm. My friend and ER doctor was puzzled, but as he looked at the list of medications I took every day and asked, “How long have you been taking omeprazole?”

“For years,” I responded.

“Well, that’s your culprit,” he said. “It can cause a magnesium deficiency.”

Yeesh! Omeprazole, also known by the brand name Prilosec, which I had been taking daily for years, for acid reflux (heartburn) – had landed me in the ER.

Most adults will suffer an occasional bout of heartburn, which is also called acid reflux, or simply “reflux.” And according to the American College of Gastroenterology, 60 million Americans experience it at least once a month. Occasional heartburn is usually harmless, however, when it happens more frequently doctors call it GERD.

Heartburn, Acid Reflux, GERD

Acid reflux occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach flow backwards (reflux) up the esophagus or food tube. This can cause pressure and a burning sensation in the chest, which is familiar to many of us and often called heartburn. Although mild heartburn may be nothing to worry about, experiencing it more than twice per week may be a red flag for a more serious condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

Certain lifestyle modifications can reduce GERD symptoms significantly, which I’ve written about in a free, informational eBook called, “Heartburn, Acid Reflux, and GERD: What You Need To Know.” You can find the book HERE.

How I Became a ‘PPI Prisoner’

In the late 1980s, a very effective class of acid-reducing drugs became available. These medications called, proton-pump inhibitors (or PPIs) produce a nearly complete blockage of stomach acid production and produce significant relief for GERD sufferers.

At first, these medications were available by prescription only, but today they are readily
available for purchase over-the-counter. Some of the most popular ones include:
 Prilosec (omeprazole)
 Nexium (esomeprazole)
 Prevacid (lansoprazole)
 Protonix (pantoprazole)

About 20 years ago, I was complaining to my internist about my frequent heartburn. He gave me some samples of Prilosec, and wow, I experienced instant relief! My heartburn disappeared and I could eat anything I wanted, so I was hooked. I’ve been taking Prilosec every day since then.

Back then, however, we didn’t realize that long-term use of PPIs might present some dangers to our health. Today, we know otherwise. Research has shown that daily, long-term use of PPIs has been linked to:
 Vitamin B12 deficiency;
 Magnesium deficiency;
 Osteoporosis;
 Possible increased risk of dementia; and
 Reduced kidney function.

Why Am I a Prisoner of Prilosec?
It’s estimated that at least 15 million Americans take a PPI on a daily basis, and unfortunately, I’m one of them. So why can’t we just stop?

Well, as anyone who has taken a PPI for more than a few months will tell you, quitting it is nearly impossible. Within 48 hours of stopping a daily PPI dose, most experience what is known as ‘acid rebound.’ Your stomach, freed from the acid-suppressing effects of the PPI, will ‘rebound’ and begin to produce acid at a much greater than normal rate.

Although this will usually settle down after a few weeks, those weeks will literally feel like “hell on earth” with constant extreme gas and bloating, chest and abdominal pain, diarrhea – basically a whole litany of misery. So, most people give up and start taking the medication again.

What To Do If You’re A PPI Prisoner Too

Since PPIs are available without a prescription nowadays, the first thing you must do is make sure that your primary care doctor knows you are taking them. Special attention should be paid to certain blood tests such as, vitamin B12 and magnesium, along with kidney function and bone density scans; so be sure to ask your doctor for these tests.

Long-term use of PPIs can significantly deplete the body’s levels of magnesium and vitamin B12, which are essential nutrients needed for production of red blood cells and proper cellular and nerve function. This can lead to hypomagnesemia (low levels of magnesium) that can cause irregular heart rhythms, muscle weakness or tremors, confusion and possibly seizures. Most people get sufficient magnesium from food, however those using acid-reducing PPIs or metformin may require a magnesium supplement.

Anyone who has been on a daily PPI for more than a few months should consider taking a vitamin B12 and magnesium supplement to maintain normal levels and prevent dangerous effects from a deficiency. One supplement specifically formulated for anyone who regularly takes a PPI is called Remplir, which has a unique formulation that combines two forms of vitamin B12 – methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin – along with chelated magnesium, designed to provide optimal absorption and bioavailability. It is also a great supplement for anyone taking metformin, the most common medication prescribed to Type 2 diabetics, which can also cause vitamin B12 and magnesium deficiency.

Finally, if you have been taking a PPI chronically, it is a good idea to have a consultation with a gastroenterologist. There are steps that a gastroenterologist might suggest that could help you ‘wean off’ the PPI.

While PPIs provide immediate relief to a problem that so many American suffer from, these medications can cause other serious health problems from drug-induced nutrient depletion. It’s important to talk to your doctor about testing your magnesium and vitamin B12 levels and taking proactive steps to replenish these important nutrients to maintain good overall health.

Improve Your Concentration with Our Six Step Guide

With so much information and technology at the tip of our fingertips these days, it’s difficult to stop your hand itching to reach out for an item such as your phone to keep you occupied whilst you’re…already occupied. As a collective, we seem to have lost our ability to concentrate fully on one singular task or form of entertainment, and we get easily distracted by our smartphones, games consoles, and televisions.

At home, this potential for distraction is harmless – if occasionally a little disruptive to your enjoyment of things – but at work, A lack of focus can lead to long-term issues with our overall concentration levels. In turn, this can prevent us from being an effective worker. Research has indicated that office workers are distracted on an average of every 11 minutes, with a significantly longer period of time required to return attention back to the original task at hand once they’ve disengaged with the distraction. Basically, our penchant for having everything at the touch of a button has meant that we spend more of what’s supposed to be our productive time trying – and failing – to stay on task.

If you’ve found yourself struggling to stay focused on a job, task, or activity for a sustained period of time, then it’s time you learned some tips, tricks, and habits that will help you maintain concentration and improve your performance at work – both short-term and long-term!

Brain Training

With our smartphones constantly by our side, containing every single piece of information and activity that we could ever possibly want to pursue, our brains are simultaneously in constant overload while never having to actually think for too long about anything. But live your life too much like this, and you’ll find your ability to recall information, problem-solve, and be creative diminish markedly.

Just as we train our bodies to be more effective, there are training activities you can get involved in that help to stretch your mental capacity and re-establish the all-important links and connections in your brain that help you to perform different tasks throughout life, and to maintain the type of street smarts that will help you to succeed in your everyday life. A 2015 study noted that spending just 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week on brain training games and activities can help build your concentration levels

Games such as crosswords, sudoku, puzzles, and word searches all help you to train your brain and improve concentration levels and street smarts, whilst also learning to control your mind and body through utilizing these essential street smarts outlined here. With a focus on self-improvement, Ed Latqimore’s work in this area offers you the chance to analyze your personal experiences and reflect upon them to forge ahead with a better life; in this case, it means acknowledging your weaknesses and acting upon them. Rather than seeing your poor concentration as a limitation, put your energy into moving past this and overcoming it.

Go Green

Most of us learned about photosynthesis and the production of oxygen through trees and plants at high school. But did you know how this fact could impact the environment you create for yourself when you’re working?

As well as being colorful splashes that enhance the decoration of a room, plants are good for our mental health and ability to think. For one thing, caring for plants – including their watering schedule and any plant feed or humidifying requirements – can provide you with a regularly occurring focus that helps to improve your memory skills and mood levels, and the inclusion of plants in your space can significantly boost your mood. Secondly, they help to produce oxygen. When you have more plants in your workspace (or anywhere else you fancy, really), this oxygen can help to stimulate your brain and cause it to work more effectively. This makes problem-solving and memory recall faster and more accurate, as it prevents your brain from feeling tired and sluggish. If you’re a constant yawner throughout the day, this tip is definitely for you!

Game Time

For years, parents around the world were united in their belief that video games help atrophy the brains of growing teens and children. Studies in recent years, however, have purportedly shown that this isn’t the case; in fact, video games can actually have a positive effect on the brain’s growth and ability to maintain high levels of concentration.

Small studies suggest that video games can help to build your visual selection memory, which enables you to concentrate on one task and successfully ignore distractions around you – almost exactly the opposite of what many parents thought that games would do to young minds!

There’s no need for this to be limited to just teens and children, though, as adults can benefit from this activity, too.

Be Strict with Tech

Emails, notifications, social media apps, messaging apps – these are just some of the distractions we deal with each day (and that many of us struggle to ignore!). Sure, it seems great to have your emails on your phone, or have notifications set up so that you know when that picture of Insta has been liked, but when it starts to impact your day-to-day life and ability to concentrate on one task at a time, it’s a bit of an issue.

By turning your phone into focus mode, turning off notifications, and limiting the apps you can use during set times, you can encourage some self-discipline and enjoy your reading uninterrupted once more.

Social Stimulation

Another essential way of improving your concentration levels is to regularly socialize with others (in person, if you can), as back-and-forth conversation on a singular topics or related topics can help you to maintain focus, thus improving your concentration abilities. Spending a lot of time alone and not engaging in any form of socialisation on a regular basis negatively impacts your ability to concentrate on what others are saying and follow the various strands of conversation and interaction.

So, even if you enjoy a little chilled-out alone time, make sure you balance it out carefully by talking and interacting regularly with friends and family – it could work wonders for your focus!

Health is Wealth

Maintaining good health is another sure-fire way of building your concentration levels. A balanced diet full of vitamins and minerals, as well as a good range of proteins, fats, and carbs, can help to keep your brain healthy, whilst avoiding caffeine, smoking, alcohol, and sugary foods can prevent brain sluggishness and the inability to concentrate.

Sleep is also a major factor in brain health, as it helps us to solidify connections and remember facts, figures, and experiences that have occurred throughout your day. Poor sleep prevents you from being able to concentrate effectively, reducing your creativity and productivity. So, turn off the blue lights at least an hour before bed (including your phone, television, and computer), get out a book, and snuggle into bed – you’ll be doing your brain a favor.

In our busy world, full of endless distractions of things to see, do, and experience that are constantly on the go, it can be hard to slow down and find ways to stop your brain from flitting between subjects and activities. This list of tips and habits that you can build into your everyday life, can help you to go against the grain and maintain your concentrations levels so that you reach your potential every day. Which do you think will help you the most?

Alcatraz East Crime Museum Launches Animal Service Exhibit

Crime fighting isn’t just for humans.  There are furry friends throughout the country that also help to solve crimes. Alcatraz East Crime Museum is highlighting the importance of police service animals in a new display. The exhibit will open on July 23, 2021, and as part of the exhibit, they will have on-going guest appearances from varying departments. The first of which will be the morning of the launch from 9:30 am till 12:30 pm, where guests can meet local K9’s from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).

“Police animals do important work and we are happy to help put a spotlight on them,” states Summer Blalock, sales and marketing manager for Alcatraz East. “We are pleased to partner with TBI, so our guests can learn about these spectacular K9’s and what it takes to train them.”

All the K9s from TBI are expected to be at the museum, barring they are not called to duty. The K9’s expected include four arson dogs (Faith, Diesel, Honey, and Millie), and Zeus, which is an electronic storage detection K9.

Faith is the agency’s first Accelerant Detection Canine and specializes in sniffing out evidence at fire scenes around the state. Honey was part of the “Puppies Behind Bars” program before becoming an Accelerant Detection Canine. Millie and Diesel are also both Accelerant Detection Canines, while Zeus is TBI’s only dog trained to detect odor from chemicals consistent across all electronic storage devices.

Some of the featured items in the new exhibit will include horseshoes from the New York City Mounted Police unit, a K9 vest used by a Pigeon Forge Police dog, and information that sheds light on the important work that animals do to help in law enforcement.

“This is a great opportunity for the family to learn about how animals play an important role in crime prevention and detection,” added Blalock. “We look forward to adding this experience to the museum.”

According to the National Police Dog Foundation, the most popular dogs used in police work are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherds. They report that the dogs typically start working when they are 12-15 months old, and they retire around age 10. The training for such a dog costs between $12,000 to $15,000 per dog, depending on the length of each class they take. The dogs are trained in a variety of areas, including obedience, agility, tracking, evidence searches, and open area and open building searches.

The museum is also hosting an annual graffiti contest. Winners of the 3rd Annual Graffiti Art Contest will receive $750 for first place, $350 for second place, and $200 for third place. The winning artists will have their artwork displayed in the museum along with winning a cash prize. Artists must submit examples of their graffiti artwork online to be eligible for the contest. Up to ten selected artists will be invited to the museum to participate in the November 6th contest. The entries will be judged by local law enforcement and art professionals. For more information or to enter the contest, visit the site here.

Alcatraz East Crime Museum has a star-studded panel of experts who make up the Advisory Board, including those in law enforcement, collectors, a medical examiner, crime scene investigators, and others. The board includes Jim Willett, a retired prison warden; Anthony Rivera, a combat veteran and Navy SEAL chief; and Judge Belvin Perry Jr., who is best known for the Casey Anthony trial. Hot Wheels Legends Tour Winner Announced

The Hot Wheels Legends Tour presented by Mobil 1 kicks off its first live, in-person stop for 2021 in Miami, Florida on Saturday, July 10. Fun for the whole family, this event is set to feature amazing local custom fan builds, Hot Wheels Garage of Legends icons, including the Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, Deora II and Midas Monkey, as well as onsite experiences for fans of all ages.

The competition intensifies for this fourth North American stop, as tons of cars will be accepted and reviewed by an expert panel of judges. This team will consist of Hot Wheels designers and Miami automotive influencers, including Hot Wheels die-cast graphic designer Leeway Chang, automotive visionary Elo of Miami Supercar Rooms, John Temerian of “We Are Curated” and Maximilian Trullenque of Cars & Coffee Miami. As always, each judge will be looking for authenticity, creativity and, most importantly, garage spirit in determining which custom fan build has the chops to potentially be immortalized as the next 1:64 die-cast Hot Wheels toy.

“We are excited to see these cars in person again. Miami is what we have been waiting for all year and we expect custom builds from all over the Southeast to register,” said Ted Wu, Global Head of Design for Hot Wheels. “In true challenger spirit, these live tour stops allow builders to showcase their passion projects, and provide a fun, friendly experience for the whole family, which is exactly what Hot Wheels is all about.”

As in previous events, the winner of this stop will go on to compete in the finals later this year to see if their build will be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends and immortalized as the next 1:64 die-cast toy sold around the world. So far this year, North American winners include a 1968 Mercedes Benz 250S from Penticton, British Columbia, Canada, a custom aluminum racer named Lulu from Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the 1969 Daytona Charger Superbird “Scraptona” from Macob, Michigan.

This event will take place at Walmart Doral located at 8651 NW 13th Terrace Doral, FL 33126 from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. EDT.
