Chinese Laundry × JuneShine

By: Kai Yeo

Outstanding quality, unique designs, and an affordable price tag – our shoe choice for this season has got to be Chinese Laundry. With groundbreaking styles season after season, it is no surprise that this brand is also celebrity approvedBlake Lively and Miley Cyrus among the list – featuring trendy designs as well as refined classics perfect to transition from day to night. On Wednesday, we got to preview the new Chinese Laundry summer and fall collections at JuneShine, paired with hard kombucha and a floral arrangement session.

With the cutest balloon arch entrance set up, we were welcomed with hard kombucha and charcuterie boards along with the prettiest decorations. As I arrived ahead of time (in my Summer Rayva Sandals), I got the opportunity to mingle with the team and talk more about the current summer launch and upcoming fall collection, a mix of styles and trends ideal for today’s fashion-forward landscape.

If you’re new to Chinese Laundry, they have been in the shoes business since 1971. Growing to become a globally recognized fashion footwear distributor, the brand has now expanded into a family of four unique brands:

  • Chinese Laundry – Styles range from dress heels to casual flats, all designed to meet the season’s most desired trends
  • Dirty Laundry – Designed with edge in Los Angeles. Dirty Laundry is casual and vintage-inspired, with a twist of California rocker-cool. Iconic designs and bold silhouettes embody the brand’s timeless collection.
  • CL By Laundry – Responds to trends in the market and translates designs into affordable, easy-to-wear styles. The collection transitions seamlessly from work, weekend, and everything in between.
  • 42 Gold – Destined to elevate any look for the busy on-the-go woman. Indulge in luxury inspired designs without breaking the budget. Quality craftsmanship and versatile silhouettes are designed to meet the needs of a modern lifestyle. Jamie Chung collaborated with them in 2019 for a 12-piece shoe collection launch.

In the mini preview we saw, Chinese Laundry has proven to us yet again that their style is on point. Their new collection of shoes ranges from classic formal to trendy, offering a great array of styles. With so many options to choose from, you’ll be sure to find something you love for the next season! As more guests started to trickle in, we decided to look around the space and found the entire backroom filled with a gorgeous array of flowers – aided by florist Tess, we even got to make our own special denim bouquet.

With so many conversations and activities going on, it was time for some food and a second glass of kombucha. JuneShine is an all-natural, organic, gluten-free hard kombucha made from green tea and honey. The primary fermentation is done by pitching yeast and honey to create a probiotic kombucha, and more yeast and cane sugar is added during the secondary fermentation (which brings the kombucha to 6% alcohol). If the alcohol percentage is a little overwhelming for anyone, JuneShine also offers flights of three which allows you to get a little sampler of everything. They also serve good empanadas (chicken, beef, and caprese) and a really mean vegan pizza haute pocket. While there are no meal options, eating a couple of those empanadas will have you fuller than you expect!

By the end of the Summer Launch Party with Chinese Laundry, we had our bellies filled and hands busy with flowers, kombucha, shoes, and even a little gift bag filled with local and sustainable goodies such as stainless steel drinking straws and my personal favorite – Lotus and Luna bracelets. Discovering that Lotus and Luna takes pride in making accessories and committed to helping their Thai artisans escape the cycle of poverty by providing them a proper wage and housing made the gift bag from Chinese Laundry very special.

Knowing that Chinese Laundry is not just a one-stop shop for vegan and fashionable footwear but that they also support small socially responsible brands has just increased our love for this brand, and we can’t wait to style our new shoes!

Highlights: Grapefruit Paloma Kombucha, Chicken Empanadas, flower bouquets wrapped with sustainable denim, and of course, shoes!

Didi + Ping – Rings of Saturn

One of Didi + Ping’s greatest passions is the exploration of outer space. Not only is “Rings of Saturn” a showcase of one of our solar system’s most unique and beautiful planets, but also a reminder of the many beautiful celestial bodies that dot the universe. Let the buzzy synths and electronic drums launch you into orbit around this golden gas giant. Who will be the first human among us to fly through the billions of tiny moons that encircle the ringed planet?

“Rings of Saturn” is an instrumental bop, an irresistible song to play and just vibe to. It’s a song that perfectly reflects the essence of outer space and the awe-inspiring planet of Saturn with it’s futuristic beats and high-pitch melody that fades into the background. The combination creates a symphony with the tempo’d beats guiding you through the journey and the ethereal background sending the tone for the beautiful planet you’re seeing; a perfect ode to the “Rings of Saturn.”

The single “Rings of Saturn” from the Asian-Canadian electronic artist, multi-instrumentalist and experimental producer Didi + Ping (who was just named to DJ Mag’s 10 Emerging Artists You Need To Hear) is out now.

Kristian Wang, who performs under the moniker of Didi + Ping, fuses the two powerful forces that have always driven him: music and his natural surroundings. Didi + Ping’s intricate soundscapes are as boundless as the vistas Wang recalls from his youth. Each production is infused with lilting melodies, emotional chords and mesmerizing instruments, thoughtfully composed to celebrate Wang’s robust musical proclivities, his rustic upbringing, and the colorful personalities who shaped him. The moniker itself, “Didi + Ping” pays homage to Kristian’s rich Asian ancestry. “Didi” means “younger brother” in his family’s native Mandarin tongue, and doubles as a shout-out to his sibling, with whom he’s created homespun grooves throughout the years. “Ping” is Wang’s Chinese namesake, and a powerful reminder of his ancestors’ storied past. As a descendent of grandparents who fled China during the civil war in search of a better life in Canada, he is no stranger to the notion of embracing the unknown. And that concept is exactly what Didi + Ping strives to illuminate in his buoyant tracks, which unveil a unique take on deep and up tempo melodic house, and showcase his talents as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and experimental producer.

Didi + Ping recently released single “Pharaoh” transporting listeners to one of the cradles of civilization. Luring in the listener with a moody bass choir, “Pharaoh” explores the tombs of Ancient Egypt’s divine monarchs. Indeed, Canada’s talented producer evokes the godly presence of these powerful rulers through his commanding piano chords, thunderous percussion, and angelic singers. His knack for building epic soundscapes and groovy beats will surely entice you to the dance floor. Press here to listen. Press here to listen to the extended version. “Take Flight” about flying being an ancient dream of humankind. On the track, Didi + Ping demonstrates his compositional prowess and atmospheric production sense with silky-toned violins and an uplifting drum beat. An inspiring piano melody drives the piece – “look heavenward!” it sings. These charming ingredients create a wishful song that will carry you high into the sky and take you for a drive on the “infinite highway of the air.” Press here to listen. Press here to listen to extended mix. “Take Flight” followed debut single “Buffalo Jump” which was recently featured on TIDAL’s Rising Electronic playlist. Press here to listen. Press here to listen to the extended version. The smooth house cut captures the spirit of the wild featuring melodious flute trills, vigorous hand drums and fascinating samples of a Native American pow wow recorded by a group who still inhabit Alberta, Canada, not too far from where Wang grew up in Calgary. The exuberant four-on-the-floor beat was first laid down as a Valentine’s Day gift for Wang’s girlfriend, before evolving into a broader love letter to the wide-open spaces and historic fragments of Americana that have long instilled wonder and pride in the curious artist.

Through captivating tones and weaving rhythms, Didi + Ping honors the mysteries of the planet, the serenity of nature and the collective spirituality that these aspects have evoked in civilizations throughout the ages.

Drawing inspiration from anywhere he can, from his home to outer space, he transports listeners elsewhere through his artistry. With immeasurable talent, and Didi + Ping is definitely an artist to watch!

Out now via Loma Vista Recordings, Daddy’s Home was produced by Annie Clark and Jack Antonoff, recorded by Laura Sisk, mixed by Cian Riordan, and mastered by Chris Gehringer. The music was performed by Annie, Jack, Cian, Thomas, Evan Smith, Sam KS, Greg Leisz, Daniel Hart, Michael Leonhart, Lynne Fiddmont and Kenya Hathaway.

ABOUT ST. VINCENT

Annie Clark made her recorded debut as St. Vincent in 2007 with Marry Me, quickly becoming regarded as one of the most innovative and fascinating presences in modern music. Each of St. Vincent’s subsequent albums has met with critical acclaim and commercial success eclipsing that of its predecessor. These albums would include Actor (2009), Strange Mercy (2011), and her self-titled fourth album and winner of the 2014 GRAMMY for Best Alternative Album, making her only the second female artist ever to win in that category. In addition to these solo works, St. Vincent joined with David Byrne to record and release the collaborative album Love This Giant in 2012, and performed with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear of Nirvana at the band’s 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2017, working with co-producer Jack Antonoff, St. Vincent created a defining statement with MASSEDUCTION. The album broke St. Vincent into the U.S. and UK top 10s while landing atop Best of 2017 lists of The New York Times, The Guardian, AV Club, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, NME, Q, USA Today, and more, not to mention winning two GRAMMYs (Best Rock Song for its title track, and Best Recording Package). Most recently, St. Vincent channeled the hungover glamor and gritty sepia-toned soundtrack of 1970s downtown NYC into the triumphant Daddy’s Home, released in May 2021 to near universal acclaim. In a glowing five-star review of the album, Mojo Magazine said “It’s masterful stuff: a full conceptual realization, filled with great melodies, deep grooves, colourful characterisations, and some sonic detail that reveals itself over repeated plays.” Outside of recording and performing, St. Vincent has directed the short horror film The Birthday Party, and co-written and starred as a fictionalized version of herself in the upcoming film The Nowhere Inn.

The FunkLabb × Myah Marie – Pretty Please

The FunkLabb & Myah Marie Release Pretty Please Music Video ft. Ruba, Young Dinero Banks, & Sarina The Violin Diva, PRESS HERE to Watch

Brooklyn-based producers/songwriters The FunkLabb, Ed Lawson and Wes Davis, has once again teamed up with singer, songwriter, and background vocalist Myah Marie for their latest single Pretty Please. Propelled by a symphony of horns and thumping bass, the funk-infused 70s inspired track features TV personality Ruba and rapper Young Dinero Banks with an appearance by Sarina The Violin Diva. Today, The FunkLabb has released the accompanying music video for Pretty Please, a continuation to the intergalactic video for Mama Said No, where we find Myah after her alien abduction using her vocal abilities to lure her captors and, with the help of her talented friends, plan their means of escape. PRESS HERE to watch the video, directed by Deathcats, and PRESS HERE to check out the premiere on The Young Folks.

We developed this track specifically for Myah with a live feel in mind using horns, live strings, and bass, knowing she would definitely complete that vision, shares Wes. Myah killed it again! ‘Pretty Please’ also features Ruba, who brought a taste of his giant personality to the track, and Young Dinero Banks who puts the exclamation point on the joint with his dope verse! On the video, Ed adds, The video for ‘Pretty Please’ shows what happened to Myah following the video for ‘Mama Said No’ after her abduction to outer space. We’re giving you something different from the mainstream norm, get ready!

When The FunkLabb sent me the track for ‘Pretty Please’ I was so thrilled, the track was undeniably catchy and fun without any topline on it! I was inspired right away and wrote it pretty quickly, shares Myah who is a lyricist and background vocalist behind many top artists such as Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Avicii, among others. This one is just about being super into someone and just coming out and saying it! As a woman (in my experience), sometimes it’s hard for us to admit we like someone or we have this fear of coming on ‘too strong’ or being perceived as ‘crazy’ and with this concept I kind of wanted to play with really just being up front and admitting my interest. (It’s hard to do in real life!!) I love this video because it’s so campy and crazy and the second follow up to ‘Mama Said No.’ I’m really looking forward to the release of this video and to share it with everyone. Tune in to see what happens next!!

Funk suggests more than a sound. It implies a whole lot of attitude, slick swagger, and serious soul and you feel it just as much as you hear it. The FunkLabb cooks up music in this spirit as they uncork a timeless groove ignited by fresh fire. Since meeting nearly three decades ago crafting music behind the scenes for everyone from legends such as The Notorious B.I.G. and Will Smith to R&B favorites Sharissa and Allure, The FunkLabb now step into the spotlight. Evolving their collaboration into an artist development hub with various artists leaning on their expertise, wisdom, guidance, and studio prowess, the group are gearing up to release a series of independent singles in 2021, beginning with Mama Said No and Pretty Please.

Feeling like something was missing from music, The FunkLabb collectively incorporate elements from their past catalog and eclectic taste as they aim to bring back the excellence and musicality needed to remind listeners of how a song makes you feel. Ultimately, The FunkLabb represents the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to music and a bold new chapter.

Iron Maiden – The Writing on the Wall

Heavy metal band Iron Maiden revealed their brand-new track, “The Writing On The Wall,” with an eagerly anticipated global YouTube video premiere. The song was written by Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith & lead singer Bruce Dickinson, produced by Kevin Shirley and co-produced by Maiden bassist and founder-member Steve Harris.

Bruce Dickinson initially had a concept for the video which came to fruition in collaboration with two Award-winning former Pixar executives and long-standing Maiden fans Mark Andrews & Andrew Gordon. The pair have over 50 years of animation industry experience between them at the very top-level including work on The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Brave, Monsters Inc & Finding Nemo. With partners lining up to get involved with the project they chose BlinkInk, a London based animation studio celebrated for their work with a variety of global brands from Adidas to Coca-Cola and a number of high-profile music videos.

In BlinkInk director Nicos Livesey, another long-time Iron Maiden fan & kindred spirit, they found a man who shared the collective vision for the track–resulting in the final film which features the very first glimpse of a stunning new incarnation of Eddie in spectacular 3D form.

Bruce comments, “I had a pretty clear idea of the concept to accompany the song and when I met Mark and Andrew, on Zoom, it quickly became clear we were all very much on the same wavelength, and this was reinforced with the addition of Nicos and his young BlinkInk team. Our weekly team Zoom meetings were then usually both highly creative and a lot of fun!

I’m very proud of the way the video turned out, it’s more like a mini-film really. I knew it was going to work out as soon as Mark brought my treatment to life with his incredible storyboards. I thought we could make something very special together. I think we did and hope our fans will agree. In fact it’s pretty much created by Maiden fans!”

Director Nicos Livesey takes up the story: “We quickly found the expertise we wanted, and people were literally throwing themselves at me to work on a Maiden video–we had more than 60 people in 13 countries from Brazil to France, & Romania to the U.S.A. to add something to the clip and I’d say their love, passion and understanding of the band shines through every frame. They were a dream team for the producers and myself to manage.”

Shintaro Sakamoto – Obscure Nightclub

JAPANESE SONGWRITING LEGEND SHINTARO SAKAMOTO SHARES VIDEO FOR OBSCURE NIGHTCLUB, THE FEELING OF LOVE EP OUT JULY 17, 2021 VIA ZELONE RECORDS, 12″ VINYL RELEASE TO BE RELEASED AS OFFICIAL RECORD STORE DAY DROP

Praise for Shintaro Sakamoto

Sakamoto’s mission is an expressive palette he has carefully made for himself with a ship-in-a-bottle-like focus. – Pitchfork

[How To Live With A Phantom’s] glimmering alloy of post-hippie global pop, soft-rock, lite-funk, Tropicalia, feels both meticulous and sly, vaguely evoking similar efforts by Beck. – The New York TImes

By deliberately amplifying the foreign strangeness that composers built into easy-listening exotica and that dilettantish listeners imposed on bossa nova and Latin jazz, the Japanese musician Shintaro Sakamoto seems to ask, ‘What if this alien music were made by actual aliens?’ – SPIN Magazine

Japanese psychedelic rock legend Shintaro Sakamoto is proud to share the official video for Obscure Nightclub from the new The Feeling Of Love EP, due July 17, 2021 via his own Zelone Records. Watch the video HERE, listen to the title track HERE, and look out for the EP’s vinyl release as a Record Store Day 2021 Drop this weekend. View the list of participating Record Store Day stores HERE.

The video was directed by Kensuke Ide, also a musician himself. Both this video and the next one (to be released soon) were shot on Super 8mm film by the director. Obscure Nightclub is a song depicting an image of Sakamoto gazing at the lost visions of the nightlife. The textures of Ideߣs 8mm film perfectly illustrate the character of the songs made during the pandemic.

The four-track EP features the laid-back style for which Sakamoto’s solo material has become known, but as always, the songs bear the marks of restless experimentation. The title track features characteristic elements like steel guitar and heavily-effected vocals, while Obscure Nightclub is a ballad enveloped in a catchy flute melody. By Swallow Season opens the B-side with its mid-tempo jazzy boogie, accompanied by wah-wah guitar and saxophone. The EP ends with Don’t Tinker With History, a funky number complete with a James Brown-worthy guitar riff.

HEAR THE FEELING OF LOVE

Shintaro Sakamoto is a Japanese music composer, producer, writer and singer based in Tokyo. He began his career in 1989 as a member of the psych/rock band Yura Yura Teikoku, where he played guitar and sang.

Yura Yura Teikoku released 10 albums over the course of 21 years, disbanding in 2010. The following year, Sakamoto launched a solo career and started his own record label, Zelone Records. He released his debut solo album How To Live With A Phantom, where Other Music Recording & Co. licensed the album for the US/EU/UK release in 2012. In 2014, Sakamoto released a split 7-inch single with Mayer Hawthorne for Record Store Day, and then released his 2nd solo album Let’s Dance Raw.

Once again, Other Music Recording & Co. licensed the album for the US/EU/UK release (and it reached #2 on Billboard’s World Chart in October, 2014). Sakamoto’s 3rd solo album Love If Possible was released in Japan, and digitally worldwide in 2017, and a split 7-inch single with Devendra Banhart was also released in Germany. Written By Wolves × Trenton Woodley – Better Luck Next Time

New Zealand’s highest streaming rock band, Written By Wolves, have recruited Trenton Woodley of Hands Like Houses for a reimagined version of “Better Luck Next Time.” Stream here.

The new single takes a tongue-in-cheek look at one of the only inevitable facts of life: no matter what we do, no one gets out alive. Woodley not only contributed vocals, but also co-produced/mixed the track and starred in the corresponding music video directed by Written By Wolves guitarist, Bahador Borhani.

“Better Luck Next Time” is the second single from Written By Wolves’ upcoming EP, The Collab Project, due out on September 17 (self-release). The 5-track EP is a collection of re-imagined collaborations of tracks from their debut album Secrets, released in late 2019. In addition to Woodley, Kellin Quinn (Sleeping With Sirens), Sonny Sandoval (P.O.D.) and others have collaborated on tracks for the EP.

Written By Wolves vocalist Michael Murphy shares, “The Collab Project is an on-going initiative to try and spread awareness, and to remind our fans and our followers, that no matter what they are going through, no matter what mental health struggles or demons they are going through right now, they don’t have to do it alone and they don’t have to deal with it on their own.” He adds, “The aim is to help normalize talking about our mental health issues and to help to breakdown the stigma attached to mental health.” Watch the band’s video explanation of The Collab Project here.

Written By Wolves are a fresh and progressive cinematic rock band and one of the most exciting new rock acts to come from New Zealand in recent years. Renowned for their highly energetic live show, the band have already shared the stage with international heavyweights such as Machine Gun Kelly, Limp Bizkit, Pendulum, Sublime With Rome, Suicidal Tendencies, We The Kings and Four Year Strong, to name just a few. Since forming in 2014, the band has amassed over 310,000 monthly listeners and more than 36 million streams on Spotify, as well as over 100,000 subscribers and 46 millions views on YouTube.

Mon Laferte Announces Tour

Chilean artist Mon Laferte has announced a two-month tour of the U.S. this morning behind her recent album, SEIS. The coast-to-coast run goes on sale Friday, July 23 at 10 am local time  and will kick off September 14 in Seattle. The run will then head down the West Coast for shows at the famed Wiltern in Los Angeles and cross the country from Phoenix to Brooklyn wrapping back west in Tucson. A full list of tour dates can be found below.
SEIS is an intensely personal album inspired by a documentary about Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, who is best known for revolutionizing Mexican ranchera music. The songs were born during the global pandemic and heavy isolation, and include carefully crafted lyrics, brought forth from self-reflection, allowing Mon to explore her deepest feelings, leaving nothing but vulnerability at this rare time.
SEIS was recently nominated for two Premios Juventud awards, Mon’s powerful duet with Alejandro Fernandez, “Que Se Sepa Nuestro Amor,” for ‘Best Regional Mexican Fusion’ and her feminine call to arms, “La Mujer,” a duet with Gloria Trevi, for the ‘Girl Power’ award. The Mexico, youth-focused awards celebrating the best in pop culture, are presented by Univision. Winners will be announced on July 22.
Rolling Stone called “Que Se Sepa Nuestro Amor,” “theatrical,” adding, “Fernández and Laferte exchange operatic verses befit for a bodice-ripping romance novel.” Billboard said, “It’s the collaboration we didn’t know we needed… one of the most attractive pairings of the year.”
Discussing “La Mujer,” The New York Times said, “Mon Laferte infuses vintage styles with up-to-date sentiments and fierce attitude” and The New Yorker added, “Laferte channels [Chavela] Vargas’s ability to convey both fierce grit and shattered vulnerability.” Robin Hilton at NPR Music noted SEIS, “Reminded me of a Chilean Édith Piaf…It’s easy to imagine her performing these songs late at night in a little club somewhere.”
Mon Laferte has also contributed her version of “Nothing Else Matters” to The Metallica Blacklist album. An unprecedented 50+ artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents, and more, each contributed a unique interpretation of their favorite Black Albumcut. Pre-order available here.

Foy Vance × Signs Of Life

Award-winning Northern Irish singer/songwriter Foy Vance has released “If Christopher Calls”, the fourth track off his forthcoming album Signs Of Life. The song is available to stream and download starting today HERE. Signs Of Life is due for release on September 10, and is available for pre-order now HERE. The album marks Vance’s second LP on Ed Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man Records/Elektra Records and follows 2016’s critically acclaimed The Wild Swan.
Vance will celebrate Signs Of Life’s arrival with An Evening With Foy Vance, an intimate tour of the UK and US, including stops in Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium. Remaining tickets for the largely sold-out run of shows are available now HERE.
Written for his wife about her late father, “If Christopher Calls” is at once beautiful yet quietly devastating. Over a gorgeous, swelling melody Vance delivers a restrained yet palpably emotional vocal. “Christopher was Marie, my wife’s father, who passed away suddenly a few years back,” Vance explains. “When it happened, Marie was in London and I was in Scotland. Her mum had phoned her to say Christopher had dropped in the kitchen but they weren’t sure if he was dead. Marie wasn’t there, she was a few miles away and just talking to her mum on the phone, trying to tell her what to do.”
“Marie then called me and when she explained the situation it was clear to me that he was already dead. But she was still holding out hope that he would be alive when she got there, and I let her think that, rather than tell her what I was certain to be true. And it was. He died immediately. Her hope of hearing his voice again was heartbreaking,” Vance recalls. “She then came to Nashville with me while I was recording an album, and every day we would wake in the morning then go and sit out the back with a coffee, and that is where I would leave her – and that is where I would find her when I got home.”
“If Christopher Calls” follows Signs of Life’s previously released tracks “Time Stand Still”, “Signs Of Life”, and “Sapling”. Upon its release, The New York Times featured “Sapling” in The Playlist and Clash Music applauded the song as “An instant fan favorite a song about renewal and survival.” The album’s early tracks have received additional praise from Entertainment Tonight, Americana UK, and more.
Signs Of Life was recorded in three locations: Vance’s Pilgrim studio at home on the shores of Loch Tay in Highland Perthshire, another recording set-up in a nearby Dunvarlich House, and at Plan B’s Kings X studio in London. The album was written and played more or less entirely by Vance, with assistance from young Northern Irish producer Gareth Dunlop. Serendipitously, Dunlop had been inspired on his career path by a chance encounter with Vance in a coffee shop 18 years ago.
Created out of the grimness of 2020, Signs of Life is an album of dawn after darkness, hope after despair, engagement after isolation, uplift after lockdown. The album’s bold artwork reflects Vance’s desire to embrace all sides of everything, all humanity’s textures. Shot on a 160-year-old camera, the back image is of Vance as a bare-chested, bare-knuckle boxer. On the front, he’s in a dress, blonde wig and theatrical make-up. “They’re just mad, striking images, and I loved the fact that it was male and female. You know, life’s extreme, life’s volatile, life explodes into reality sometimes, and stops just as quick. So to be struck by images on the cover made sense.”
Commenting on the album’s timely subject matter, Vance shared, “Signs of Life is about re-emergence me in my own soft revolution, the world re-emerging in what we’re about to see as we hopefully go back to some semblance of normality. But just life in general flowers growing through the cracks in Chernobyl. Life finds a way, doesn’t it?”

Pandemic Pause: Americans Cut Driving Nearly In Half In Early Stage of COVID Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions in the spring of 2020, such as stay-at-home orders, led to a drastic drop in U.S. road travel and a sharp increase in the number of people who chose to stay home all day. While the dramatic change in traffic patterns was widely noted last year, new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s New American Driving Survey (2020) provides compelling month-by-month data that examines the types of trips and the characteristics of the people who altered their driving habits. According to the research, the average number of all daily personal car trips plunged 45% in April 2020 and 40% for trips by all modes of transportation combined. The dip in travel moderated later in the year but remained below 2019 levels.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on our commute habits and patterns in the United States,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Findings based on our survey data provided some contextual information to understand better how this unfortunate event has affected the way we travel.”

Daily trips for all modes of transportation fell from an average of 3.7 trips per day in 2019 to 2.2 trips in April 2020, before slightly recovering. After abruptly decreasing in April 2020, daily trips by U.S. residents rebounded somewhat in May and June and then remained at approximately 20%–25% below their 2019 levels during the second half of 2020.

The survey results show that early in the pandemic, reductions in travel were most substantial among teens and young adults (ages 16–24) and among those ages 65 and older. But later in 2020, reductions in travel were more uniform across various age groups.

Other key findings

  • Daily Car trips: (as a driver or passenger) fell from 3.2 pre-pandemic to 1.8 in April 2020, before rebounding slightly to 2.6 trips for the rest of the time period.
  • All travel by any mode: Daily trips in April 2020 by people living in urban areas dropped 42%,  versus 25% for their rural counterparts, before leveling off to a 20%-30% reduction in both groups for the rest of the survey period.
  • Travel by transit, taxi, or rideshare: The proportion of people who reported making any trips by transit, taxi, or rideshare plummeted from 5.5% pre-pandemic to 1.7% in April of 2020, before leveling off at approximately 2.4% for the remainder of the year.
  • Commuter Travel: Work-related travel by all transportation modes dropped by 40% in April 2020, likely reflecting a mix of layoffs, job losses, and telecommuting. Commuting trips made by workers on days when they worked decreased by approximately 22% relative to pre-pandemic levels as well. In the following months, commuting trips returned to approximately 26% below pre-pandemic levels among the population as a whole, likely due to increases in the proportion of Americans who were working. Commuting remained approximately 25% below pre-pandemic levels among workers on days when they worked, indicative of continued widespread telecommuting.
  • Staying At Home: The percentage of the population who remained in the same place all day fluctuated between 9% and 14% before the pandemic but increased to 26% in April 2020, before stabilizing at levels slightly higher than those before the pandemic for the remainder of the year.  The proportion of respondents who stayed in the same place all day quadrupled among those with the highest levels of education (from 5% in the second half of 2019 to 21% in April 2020), whereas it doubled (from 15% to 30%) among those who did not attend college.
  • Marital Status: The percentage of married people staying home nearly tripled from 8% in 2019 to 22% in April 2020, versus 12% and 29% for unmarried people. The numbers for both groups remained elevated over pre-pandemic levels for the remainder of the year.

Despite fewer cars on the road and more people staying home, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently estimated that 38,680 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2020—the largest projected number of fatalities since 2007. It is an increase of about 7.2 percent over 2019.

“It’s counterintuitive to see the rate of traffic deaths spike when so many of us were driving less often,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy. “As the U.S. climbs out of the COVID-19 pandemic, highway safety officials will need to double down on curbing speeding, substance-impaired driving, and failure to buckle up.”

Methodology

This study examined data from the AAA Foundation’s New American Driving Survey (New ADS), which surveys a representative sample of U.S. residents ages 16 years or older to collect detailed information about all of the travel they did on the day before the interview. The current study examines the mean daily number of trips made by U.S. residents each month among 7,873 respondents who were interviewed between July 1, 2019 (start of data collection for the New ADS) and December 31, 2020. In the New ADS, a trip refers to any travel from one place to another.
