Brooklyn Rapper J.I. Releases Summer Anthem – Morning

Brooklyn-native artist, J.I. releases his latest single “Morning” today via G*Starr Ent./Geffen Records. On the melodic, yet upbeat track the 19-year-old singer/rapper creates a world of emotions like never before. His lyrics deliver a powerful story on heartbreak as each line exposes his uncertainties of a plunging relationship. Of the track J.I. shares “We’ve all been in this position before. I wanted to speak from my perspective about how I’m being played and manipulated and wanted to make a catchy song out of something painful. I feel like I was able to execute what I wanted to do.” Listen here.

Paired with a visual directed by Austin McCracken (G Eazy, Mike Will Made It, Phora) J.I. taps into his  vulnerable side. Filmed throughout New York City we catch a glimpse of his relationship unfolding while he reflects on the toxicity of the turbulent romance. Frame by frame we see each bar come to life “You didn’t even give me a warning you left all your things and walked through that door; I don’t want to feel what I feel no more.” Watch the video for “Morning” here.

“Morning” arrives fresh on the heels of his return this year with his track “No Hook,” a freestyle heavy song which helped re-introduce and remind his fans about his raw tone and melodic style. “No Hook” garnered praise from XXL who included the track on their “13 Best New Songs this Week” roundup and has gone on to amass over a million views. He also recently received praise from REVOLT who included him as one of their “Gen Z artists you need on your radar.”

J.I. is also set to head on his first North American “The Young and Restless Tour” this Fall. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.

Civilian Space Flights

By: Emily Bunn

3,2,1… Liftoff! On July 20, Blue Origin LLC, an American privately funded aerospace manufacturer and sub-orbital spaceflight services company, launched its first crewed mission. July 20 marks the anniversary of the first ever human landing on the moon, by Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo 11.

Blue Orbit, founded by Jeff Bezos, took the billionaire Amazon CEO and his brother, Mark Bezos into orbit. Also aboard the aircraft is Wally Funk. Funk is American aviator and Mercury 13 astronaut. The final passenger aboard the mission is eighteen-year-old physics student, Oliver Daemen.

Jeff Bezos has been excitedly anticipating this mission. He commented to NBC’s Today Show on Monday, July 19, stating I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see what it’s going to be like… People say they go into space and they come back changed. Astronauts always talk about that, whether it’s the thin limb of the Earth’s atmosphere and seeing how fragile the planet is, that it’s just one planet. So I can’t wait to see what it’s gonna do to me.”

The daring mission took place on Blue Orbit’s New Shephard rocket this morning. The spacecraft is made from a rocket, topped by a capsule. New Shephard took off at 9:11 a.m. EDT (1311 GMT) and stands as the company’s first human flight. This momentous occurrence marks Blue Orbit’s first crewed flight.

During the flight, the New Shephard climbed to a peak altitude of 351210 ft into the atmosphere. In total, the capsule carried the four passengers 66.5 miles (107 kilometers) above earth. Jeff Bezos enjoyed his space mission, remarking “Blue Control, Bezos. Best day ever!” during the mission. Once completed, the flight took just over ten minutes from liftoff to landing.

At 9:40, the New Shephard returned to earth and landed in the Texas desert. The space craft was aided in its landing by parachutes. Upon touching down onto the dessert soil, a sonic boom erupted and dust temporarily muddied the surrounding arid landscape. In the course of the landing, Jeff Bezos enthusiastically exclaimed, “You’ve got a very happy crew, I want you to know,” reports Space. The members of the suborbital spaceflight were greeted by their family immediately after exiting the aircraft.

Live updates as well as a post-flight press conference can be viewed on Space’s website HERE.

However, Bezos isn’t the only billionaire to launch into space as of late. On July 11, the founder of the Virgin Group, Richard Branson, also was catapulted into orbit. Branson traveled on the VSS Unity space plane, of which was Virgin Galactic’s first fully crewed flight. In fact, Virgin Galactic and Blue Origins are each other’s most competitive rivals in the race for the suborbital space tourism business. Both billionaires basked in a few minutes of weightlessness and once in a lifetime view of earth.

Looking ahead, both Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin seek to continue their successful test flights. With a ticket costing $250,000, Virgin Galactic’s luxurious mission offers passengers a priceless field of vision. Blue Orbits’ spacecraft tickets are estimated to also cost around the same price. As suborbital space tourism takes off, the world waits in earnest to see who is next to visit space.

GirlzLuhDev – Day One Starter

Rapper, singer, ex-basketball star, and – quite possibly – America’s next great hitmaker. 17-year-old senior GirlzLuhDev from California’s Inland Empire has already landed a viral hit, the raunchy but blissed out “Tooka.” With over two million streams and a Tooka TikTok challenge formed, the song is supported by simple beats and rich keys, and we get a glimpse of his youthful energy in this bright blend of bars, warbled melodies, and ad libs that sound like smack talk beamed down from a distant planet.

Dev was born in Inglewood amid tragedy – his father was shot and killed in a liquor store while his mother was pregnant with him – but as a kid he found diversion and direction in sports. While he has fond memories of playing pickup basketball in Rogers Park and football for the Inglewood Jets, Dev’s interests broadened as he found Vine and Musical.ly growing up. And while he was a dynamic point guard being groomed by his coaches for a future pro career well into high school, his rap obsession took over, citing Lil Uzi Vert as his first musical love (alongside established artists like Drake, Future, and Chris Brown).

Sophomore year, Dev was cut from the JV basketball team for missing a game. But that loss would lead to something new. Dev was bored, “So one day in P.E.,” he says, “I just started singing this hook. I made it into a freestyle video, and it got, like, 7,000 views in three days.” Naturally, he kept making videos. The second one did just as well, and then, while plotting his third, he decided to make full songs. “Rover” and “We Can Go” were his first two – recorded in his friend’s garage studio – and they took off locally, cranking at high school rallies. You can hear why: Dev’s voice was like water, swishing and swirling over West Coast production. He twisted words into new shapes, and the Auto-Tune made his notes sound like sunbeams.

With his mind fully in music and posting up north of nearly 25 million streams in the U.S. alone, GirlzLuhDev drops his debut, Day 1 Starter on Capitol Records. He paved the way for the project with “Dead Bro” that quickly racked 100K streams, and it also received praise from HotNewHipHop dubbing it “equally funny as it is infectious, and GirlzLuhDev’s charm is the cherry on top.” Between “Day 1 Starter (feat. Remble),” “Mario Chalmers,” and the viral single “Tooka,” tracks from the EP have already impressively amassed over 17 million total streams prior to release.

Last week, I got the chance to speak with Dev about his life prior to music, what has changed for him since, and about his Day 1 Starter project release.

With Tooka blowing up on TikTok, how do you feel about the support and reactions to the song? What has this changed for you?

“The support was good, very good, and still good to this day. Overall, it was a good song, and they love it. Till’ this day, I still find thousands of videos playing it. A hundred different [TikTok] sounds were added to the song like slow reverb, and it’s a pretty big shot. Every day I still find myself thinking oh damn, they did that to my song?”

You talk about giving up sports (hoop sauce) for music. Was this a difficult decision to make?

“Let me tell you… It was a difficult decision to make. I love basketball! When I was a kid in L.A., it was strictly sports. But it was like I made a song, and it did good, and I wanted to take a break because this culture is weird. And then I just fell in love with the love I was getting from the music I was making, and people were telling me I got what it takes. Giving up hoop hurt, but it was the best decision ever. I’m glad I’m here and the bars are in me.”

Is there a story behind your rapper name you’d like to share with anyone just getting into your music?

“One of my homies gamer names was GirlzLuhJohnny, and that name was hard to me. And we made a little clan, and I just had to be GirlzLuhDev and ran with it.”

Can you talk about your inspirations? Or anything you’d like to tell us about your visual for Day 1 Starter?

“My visuals for my new songs are actually gonna be my biggest visuals. My thing now is that I wanna make strictly movies, I want all my songs to have the visual and meaning. I actually got two videos stored up right now, by far my best visuals ever. Better than Tooka and Dead Bro. Even though those were all fire. This new stuff though… I’m prepared to come up like a young superstar, so they view my music how I want it to be viewed.

Dev spoils the unreleased tracks for us, and the opener “BNB” pairs his melodic verses with piano and a glitchy beat. Finger-snaps maintain the tempo of “Dangerously N Love” as his hummable bars melt into the production with smooth energy. He leans into an off kilter bounce on “Used To” with one final hypnotic chorus. GirlzLuhDev asserts himself as a rapper to watch in 2021 and, of course, a Day 1 Starter.

HELMUT JAHN: LIFE + ARCHITECTURE

Chicago Architecture Center Announces HELMUT JAHN: LIFE + ARCHITECTURE

A Design Retrospective Opening July 23 in CAC’s Skyscraper Gallery

New exhibit part of an international outpouring of appreciation for Jahn’s design legacy following his death in May

The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) announces HELMUT JAHN: LIFE + ARCHITECTURE, a career design retrospective of Helmut Jahn’s innovative work that has left an enduring legacy around the world and in his adopted home of Chicago. The exhibit, organized after Jahn’s death in May, will include numerous scale models of Jahn’s pathbreaking designs throughout his career. HELMUT JAHN: LIFE + ARCHITECTURE opens on July 23 and runs through October.

Helmut Jahn and Chicago were made for one another,” said Lynn Osmond, President and CEO of the CAC. “Helmut’s larger-than-life persona and his inventive and surprisingly original buildings remade Chicago in the 1980s. His brash designs and relentless pursuit of excellence invigorated Chicago, helping the architectural community move confidently beyond mid-century modernism. Helmut was, in turn, embraced by ‘the city of big shoulders.’”

HELMUT JAHN: LIFE + ARCHITECTURE will include personal and professional items generously loaned by Helmut Jahn’s family and firm. Visitors to CAC’s Skyscraper Gallery will see scale models of some of Jahn’s most recent designs, including 1000M (Chicago) and Pritzker Military Archives (Somers, Wisconsin) currently under construction. Visitors will also see scale models of buildings designed at key points in Jahn’s career, including Post Tower (Bonn, 2002), Sony Center (Berlin, 2000) and the James R. Thompson Center (Chicago, 1985). Together, these buildings, represented by scale models in the exhibit, introduce visitors to Jahn’s enduring design legacy.

Helmut was a great mentor.” said Tom Lee, Principal, Eastman Lee Architects. “He had a profound influence on me and my career and that of so many other architects in the city and around the world.”

The Thompson Center, an example of innovative post-modern design, is in the news as it is currently to be sold by the State of Illinois without protection for its historic design. A nomination to the National Register of Historic Places seeks historic tax credits for incentivizing adaptive reuse, but this process is still ongoing. To support a debate on the future of The Thompson Center, the CAC and the Chicago Architectural Club created the James R. Thompson Center Design Competition that challenges architects to envision a new future for Jahn’s post-modern masterpiece. The winning designs will be exhibited at the CAC in late summer.

With a burst of shattering, curving and bulging glass in a rainbow of colors, Helmut Jahn danced onto the international architecture scene in the 1980s, translating the discipline of Chicago Modernism into new programs and forms while melting and fragmenting its grids into a post-disco delight of shaped buildings,” said Aaron Betsky, Director of the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech. “We better save the Thompson Center, which is not only one of his greatest designs, but one of the few true celebrations of government as a public good.

HELMUT JAHN: LIFE + ARCHITECTURE caps the CAC’s 2021 reopening with all-new and updated exhibits in its 10,000 square feet of galleries. The Chicago Gallery, home to the Chicago City Model Experience, is completely overhauled with new displays on Current Chicago Projects, Chicago’s neighborhoods and the new exhibit, Housing for a Changing Nation.

The CAC’s spring 2021 reopening began with the April launch of new CAC Walking Tours and the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center (CAFC) River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. Both walking tours and the river cruise have been popular options for Chicagoans and visitors eager to rediscover the beauty and inspiration of Chicago architecture.

For updates on offerings visit the official website.

Thrice Announces New Album Horizons/East

Thrice releases new single, Scavengers, in anticipation of their new album, Horizons/East, out this fall.

Returning with their 11th studio album, the dynamic and explorative California-based rock band Thrice announces new album Horizons/East, out September 17 via Epitaph Records on streaming platforms. The album exemplifies art as a work of recognition: the human task of perceiving oneself amid details, disasters, and blessings as a relentlessly relational phenomenon among others. In this, Horizons/East is the rare rock album on which interrelatedness is a theme, painting an adventurous and lush landscape mixed by Scott Evans that the band self-produced and recorded at their own New Grass Studio.

The powerful new single, Scavengers, is out today. Over a dark and intricate braiding of guitar and drum grooves, the lyrics challenge us to discern the issues and information that bonds us versus what disintegrates and destroys. For vocalist Dustin Kensrue, the song is – but also kind of isn’t – a thing of the past. Whether lost in a media diet that is essentially a disinformation pipeline or, relatedly, trapped in fear of a future of eternal conscious pain, Kensrue speaks of “toxic worldviews I once inhabited, and in truth, a lot of people that I love are still in that place.”

To emerge from a global pandemic with a renewed sense of situational awareness, hard-won insight, and a new album is the kind of move we’ve come to expect from Thrice over the last twenty years. With Horizons/East, Kensrue and his bandmates address, with candor and courage, the fragile and awkward arrangements that pass for civilization, while inviting us to dwell more knowingly within our own lives. Without surrendering any of the energy and hard edge of their previous albums, they’ve given us a profoundly meditative work, which serves as a musical summons to everyday attentiveness.

Horizons/East conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility. Some of the writing even began with open-ended challenges that the band laid on themselves like building a song using the quartal chords they found in much of the jazz they loved, or taking the Fibonacci sequence and turning it into a guitar riff.

Thrice seems ever eager to step out into these spaces unknown to them, unsure of where their feet will land, and this new record is no exception. Horizons/East is a soundtrack for deeper dreaming.

Rival Sons Announce Fall North American Tour

Rival Sons announce a fall headline tour to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their landmark album, Pressure and Time.

GRAMMY-nominated group Rival Sons will return to the road in North America on the Pressure and Time Tour this fall. The six-week headline run will see the band celebrating the 10th anniversary of their 2011 album, Pressure and Time, by performing the landmark long player live in its entirety. The tour kicks off on September 29 at Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and includes stops at legendary venues such as the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the Riviera Theater in Chicago, The Warfield in San Francisco, The Wiltern in Los Angeles, and comes to a close on November 13 at House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. Most dates of the tour will feature support from Dorothy, with select dates supported by either Reignwolf or Myron Elkins. The official ticket pre-sale launches Wednesday, July 21.

For the first time, Rival Sons will perform their critically acclaimed and cult favorite second full-length album, Pressure & Time, from top to bottom. Upon its arrival in 2011, Pressure and Time garnered the band worldwide recognition and has since amassed over 40 million-plus streams and garnered widespread praise with the BBC affirming it is “simply stuffed with rollicking tunes.”

Last month, Rival Sons lit up Southern California with a two-night livestream event, Rival Sons “Pair of Aces: Live from the historic Catalina Casino on Santa Catalina Island.” They performed their debut LP, Before the Fire [2009], in its entirety on the first night and their self-titled EP, Rival Sons [2010], on the second.

Earlier this year, Rival Sons launched their very own label, Sacred Tongue Recordings, with distribution through Thirty Tigers. The band recently regained the master rights to several of their early releases and will reintroduce them to the world by first remastering their independent full-length debut LP, Before the Fire (2009), and self-titled EP Rival Sons (2010), on all DSPS, CD, and Vinyl – for the first time. They’ve printed up an exclusive run of 1000 copies of both Before the Fire and Rival Sons. Before the Fire will come in an orange splatter variant, while the EP is available in a clear with gold splatter variant. There will also be indie retailer exclusive colorways of each release in translucent orange and crystal clear, respectively. A repressing of Pressure and Time has not been announced but is expected in the coming months.

By looking back, Rival Sons also leap forward again as they continue working on more music and the follow-up to 2019’s Feral Roots, which not only garnered a 2020 GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Rock Album but also yielded a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance for the top 10 rock track, Too Bad, and features the #1 rock radio single, Do Your Worst. Produced by multi GRAMMY Award-winner Dave Cobb at Nashville’s famed RCA Studio A, and the equally legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL, Rival Sons’ Feral Roots is available now on all streaming platforms.
