Anjulie – Big Bad World

Canadian pop musician Anjulie released the official music video for “Big Bad World” with Canadian director Dan Lemoyne. Dan created a world of stunning projection-based tableau for me to emote against; a personal existential crisis within a planetary existential crisis. Heavy social commentary hidden inside the levity of a whimsical melody on a bed of cinematic sound design. Watch and share on YouTube.

“Big Bad World” is a dark nursery rhyme, nodding to the fairytale concept of the wolf. The chorus is sung as a condescending rationalization to the worst kind of person who justifies their bad deeds by burrowing in the womb of ignorance. Stream on your preferred platform now.

Anjulie said about the song, “Navel-gazing narcissism is rewarded in this constantly connected, depersonalized, and performative world. It’s about turning a blind eye to the horrors of humanity like ecological collapse, terrorism, school shootings, and crippling economic inequality while being distracted by shiny new tech, social media and the incessant gamification of social status.”

About Anjulie

Anjulue Persaud, known professionally as Anjulie, is the youngest of four children and was born and raised in Oakville, Ontario. She became obsessed with music after watching Janet Jackson’s Velvet Rope Tour. Her first big break came in 2009 when she opened for Jesse McCartney. While she’s had plenty of success with songs such as “Boom,” “Love Songs” and “Rain,” she’s also found some major success in TV, and her songs have been featured in shows such as Melrose Place and The Vampire Diaries. Thus far, she’s only released one self-titled album, which came in 2009.

Gracie Abrams Announces 2021 Tour

GRACIE ABRAMS ANNOUNCES I’VE MISSED YOU, I’M SORRY TOUR

Acclaimed songwriter Gracie Abrams announces her I’ve missed you, I’m sorry tour for this fall. Kicking off September 1 in Santa Ana at the Constellation Room Abrams will play 10 shows including stops in New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles and London. Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 23, at 10 a.m. local time. See below for the full list of tour dates including already announced festivals Bottlerock, Firefly and Austin City Limits.  Tickets can be purchased here.

In May Abrams released her poignant new single Mess It Up and its accompanying video — a heart-melting portrait of shattered hopes and smashed layer cake.  Directed by Matty Peacock, the video for Mess It Up finds Abrams attempting to bake a cake and repeatedly dropping the gorgeously frosted final product on the ground.

Mess It Up is Abrams’s first new music since the March premiere of Unlearn, a collaboration with hitmaker benny blanco who also served as producer on the title track to her acclaimed debut project minor which came out last summer.

ABOUT GRACIE ABRAMS

Since making her debut with Mean It in October 2019, Gracie Abrams has emerged as one of the most compelling songwriters of her generation, earning the admiration of such likeminded artists as Lorde, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo. A consummate songwriter who names Joni Mitchell as her most formative influence, she penned her first song at the age of eight, then went on to amass a devoted following on the strength of her emotionally intimate lyrics and DIY sensibilities. As her profile rose, Abrams was named an artist to watch by tastemaking outlets like Pigeons & Planes, Fader, and -iD, in addition to being crowned one of seven breakout female musicians by Vogue UK. With the arrival of her debut project minor in summer 2020, she received glowing reviews from the likes of NME, who praised her painfully honest tales of heartbreak draped in delicate melodies that carry much more intrigue than the usual run-of-the-mill singer-songwriter. Executive-produced by Blake Slatkin — and also made with leading producers like Joel Little and benny blanco – the seven-song effort features her beloved singles 21, I miss you, I’m sorry, and Long Sleeves. Abrams is now at work on more new music, due out later this year.

Hunter Echo Makes Disgusting Comments About Millie Bobby Brown

By: Skyler Johnson

On July 12, TikTok user Hunter Echo–AKA Hunter Ecimovic–made a now-deleted livestream where he jokingly claimed he abused and groomed Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown after a picture surfaced of the two kissing. He also went into great detail about their sex life during the course of their alleged eight month relationship when he was 20 and she was 16. While Ecimovic made serious accusations against himself, he still seemed to shrug it off and stated that he didn’t do anything wrong.

To be clear, everything that Ecimovic has said at this time is alleged. We have no clear knowledge of what this relationship might’ve been, and whether or not it even existed in the first place. All we know is what Ecimovic has said and all we’ve seen is one picture that’s surfaced of the two kissing.

There is the question of whether or not the information should have been made public in the first place, looking past who decided to make it that way. After all, the internet has no right to know about Brown’s abuse. Brown shouldn’t be forced to deal the public knowing about her trauma, yet she’s having to deal with people constantly asking if she’s okay. While this is well-intentioned, a lot of survivors don’t want to talk openly about their trauma. This is likely especially for the case for Millie Bobby Brown, who we’re not even sure had any form of relationship with Ecimovic. Yet, people online are treating her like she’s a survivor–which may not be a label she’s comfortable with.

The comments Ecimovic made were obviously gross, but not surprising when directed towards Brown, whose relationships and physicality have constantly been publicized and degraded by the public.

Millie Bobby Brown’s Sexualization

Despite Brown’s young age, because of her popularity and the popularity of Stranger Things, her life and public image have constantly been put into question. This questioning comes from both men who obsess over her physicality and women who have expressed desire for her to be in a relationship with Stranger Things co-star Finn Wolfhard, among others.

She’s gotten attention from people who believe that she’s presented herself, or has been presented, in a sexual way. Critics claim that certain outfit choices she made weren’t “acceptable” because they showed too much of her skin.

Brown’s dating life has long been under a large amount of scrutiny. Everyone knew when she was dating Musical.ly star Jacob Sartorius, and Brown recieved backlash. Some begged her to cheat on him with Wolfhard.

Ultimately, this is a problem for many child stars and celebrities–particularly internet celebrities. With cases like Danielle Cohn and Danielle Bregoli being clear examples, albeit they made more extreme choices. Ultimately, all Brown is doing is wearing dresses and dating people which, obviously, a lot of teenage girls do. But because of her fame, she gets criticized for it.

While bragging about alleged sexual abuse and grooming may seem sociopathic, the American public is so in-tune with celebrities and their dating lives. In this way, it’s not unrealistic that someone would talk about Brown in the way that Ecimovic has. To be clear, this is not me defending the actions of Ecimovic in any way. What he said is still horrendous, especially if his accusations hold any merit. Sexual assault is not something to laugh off with your friends. All I’m saying is that because of the way our society treats teenage girls, Ecimovic’s comments make sense.

The Aftermath (What We Know So Far)

While Brown hasn’t said anything about the situation personally (and she doesn’t have to), her team has made a statement suggesting they’re going to take action. What that exactly means, no one is entirely sure. Though the next step most likely won’t be legal action given everything at this point is hear-say. However, the de-platforming of Ecimovic is possible. Ecimovic’s Instagram and Twitter account have both been suspended, and Ecimovic has made an apology for the livestream. Ecimovic has now suggested that his comments about grooming Brown was a fabrication, but again, we don’t yet really know anything.

Gord Downie – Coke Machine Glow 20th Anniversary

GORD DOWNIE’S COKE MACHINE GLOW SEES EXPANDED 20th ANNIVERSARY RELEASE

Downie’s First Solo Project Revisited With Triple Album

Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal (Arts & Crafts) And Poetry Audiobook (Penguin Random House)

Out August 27, 2021 – Preorder Now

Bonus Listen: ‘I Stand Before The Songwriters’ Cabal‘ Music Edit With Spoken Word By Rob Baker

Gord Downie’s Coke Machine Glow was released in 2001, in between Music @ Work (2000) and In Violet Light (2002), the ninth and tenth albums by his mighty band of brothers in The Tragically Hip. The first solo project by one of the world’s great wordsmiths, Coke Machine Glow’s sixteen painterly songs were released with an accompanying book of poetry, collectively emanating Downie’s heartrending stories, from the road as from home, in his signature quirk and complex, approachable wit. Twenty years since its release, Coke Machine Glow remains a teetering, charming body of work, never static, shot across its canvas in brilliant glowing embers and warm honey tones.

Now, to mark its 20th anniversary, Arts & Crafts announces a special expanded reissue that posthumously revisits the songs and poetry of this prolific period of Downie’s career. Entitled Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal, the triple-album features the original two-disc set plus a bonus record of twelve unreleased demos, alternate versions, and never-before-heard outtakes, carefully curated by Gord’s oldest Toronto friend Josh Finlayson and brothe Patrick Downie with Arts & Crafts’ Jonathan Shedletzky, including the ominous I Stand Before The Songwriters’ Cabal and two opposing versions of the mysterious Contact.

The in-all 28-song collection presents a portrait of Downie with a rarely before heard intimacy, unrefined and dripping in the wildness of the moment. Elegant alternate studio takes of classics like Vancouver Divorce and Lofty Pines express the fluidity of the family band that comprised the Gas Station recording sessions in Toronto, that May of 2000; while home recordings dated November 1999, Carlaw Avenue, of SF Song, Trick Rider, and Chancellor, and more, spotlight Gord in close communion with his tape recorder and coffee machine. Produced by GD, Josh Finlayson, and Steven Drake, featuring Dale Morningstar, Julie Doiron, Kevin Hearn, Atom Egoyan, Dave Clark, Don Kerr, and more, Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal is a document of Gord at the precipice of his illustrious solo career.

Concurrently, Penguin Random House announces the Coke Machine Glow Audiobook, a complete reading of Downie’s original book of poetry by family members, band members, and friends, like Sarah Harmer, Dan Aykroyd, Ron MacLean, Bruce McCulloch, Don Kerr, and many more, produced by Patrick Downie. (See here for the full list of readers). Ultimately a book Gord wrote about the distances that bridge and separate us, Coke Machine Glow is bound by the dedication of those he loved and was loved by a rich, haunting collection that reveals both the public and private selves of Gordon Edgar Downie. In poetry that is urban, gritty and political, romantic and nocturnal, nostalgic and whimsical, Downie allows us a glimpse inside his world, with loved ones carrying the gift of his words onwards.

Available via digital audiobook retailers, the Coke Machine Glow poetry collection will also be included on CD with A&C’s physical music editions. The Songwriters’ Cabal 3LP vinyl is presented in a beautiful embossed triple-gatefold package, limited to a one-time pressing of 2000 hand-numbered copies. In addition to the 3CD set, A&C is for the first time offering a Coke Machine Glow songbook for voice, guitar, and piano. The album, audiobook, and songbook are out on August 27, 2021. The Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal limited edition vinyl is expected to ship November 15, 2021.

PREORDER COKE MACHINE GLOW 20th ANNIVERSARY ITEMS

That Coke Machine Glow did not sound like a record by The Tragically Hip was both not a surprise, and is still in every way a surprising work: Downie’s oblique yet vicarious poetry undressed of its electricity, redressed in a glorious other voltage. A snapshot of spontaneity, recorded but barely rehearsed, its arc of clandestine art pop clashing with the hum of collective stream-of-consciousness, Gord Downie’s Coke Machine Glow feels like a wild passage through listless places, burrowing in the magic of whatever delicate moment. Maybe Downie was the genius orchestrator of this Goddamned Band, or perhaps he was just always prepared with the right thing to say. You might have listened to this record for the last twenty years, and still not heard some of its finest details, that is the happenstance when onesome poetry is rightly crossed with collective improvisation. On Songwriters’ Cabal, the curtain is pulled back, as Downie rose from his kitchen table/hotel room desk, notebook in hand, and stepped to the mic and sang, voice tinkling like a chandelier, until god or a reasonable facsimile appears.

NOT included on either the music album or the spoken word audiobook is a bonus music edit of Rob Baker of The Tragically Hip’s reading of the poem I Stand Before the Songwriters’ Cabal, set to an instrumental snippet of the same titled song. Shared today, listen here:

BONUS LISTEN: ‘I STAND BEFORE THE SONGWRITERS’ CABAL’ MUSIC EDIT WITH SPOKEN WORD BY ROB BAKER

Josh Finlayson on the Coke Machine Glow sessions (from the liner notes):

Having lived in Toronto for over 10 years, Gord wanted to make his first solo record in his adopted city, co-producer and musician Josh Finlayson recalls. He had met and befriended many artists in different disciplines and was keen to collaborate with that community. The Gas Station recording studio was located in an old warehouse district of Toronto close to the exhibition grounds near King and Dufferin. Located on the fourth floor, it was an open spaced room with 10 foot windows that had spectacular views looking south to Lake Ontario and east towards downtown. Owned and operated by Dale Morningstar and Don Kerr who after 10 years of operation were being evicted from this location. Coke Machine Glow ended up being the last session at the Gas Station from April 29-May 10, 2000.

The one concrete idea we had going into the recording was that Gord would sing these songs quietly, as they had been written. The recording room was large (50’X25′) with high ceilings. The musicians were spread throughout this room facing the centre where Gord was sitting. Don Kerr (drums) and Kevin Hearn (piano) were only available for the first day of recording which was also our set up day. By late afternoon we were ready to start and their time constraints led to the decision that we were going to make a live off the floor record using an 8 track machine. In hindsight, this was a fortuitous decision as it created a structure that forced us to work within certain parameters. All the songs ended up being cut live, including Gord’s vocals. The only overdubs were done by guests who weren’t available at the time and had to add their parts later. For the remainder of the session Dave Clark took over on drums and Dale Morningstar who was assistant engineering, played several different instruments throughout the recording. There was little rehearsal time for anyone so in most cases the songs were run through once or twice and then recorded.

The Coke Machine Glow 20th anniversary collection, including exclusive merchandise commemorating this landmark release in Downie’s career, is available for PREORDER NOW via Gordieland, Arts & Crafts and Penguin Random House.

Stay High was Public Radio’s Most Popular Song of 2019. History Repeats, Goat Head and Short And Sweet received GRAMMY nominations in the rock, R&B and American roots categories respectively.

Praising Jaime as a candid autobiography in funk, The New York Times said, With a voice that can go to the roadhouse, the church or deeply private places, she exorcises troubles with the music’s sheer pleasure. Pitchfork said, Jaime is a daring turn in just about every way. In a four-star review, Rolling Stone hailed it as Brittany’s searing manifesto, her tour-de-force solo debut. The Avalanches recently commemorated the 20 anniversary of their ground-breaking debut album, Since I Left You, with the release of a deluxe edition featuring numerous bonus tracks including fresh mixes from such artists as MF Doom, Black Dice, Leon Vynehall, Sinkane and Carl Craig. The anniversary edition, which just hit No. 1 on the NACC Electronic college radio chart, is available now in vinyl, CD and digital formats HERE. The release and subsequent touring in support of Since I Left You was followed by a 16-year radio silence, which was broken with the release of The Avalanches sophomore album, Wildflower (Astralwerks), which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart and atop the Australian Albums chart in 2016. Their third album, We Will Always Love You (Astralwerks), was awarded four stars byRolling Stone and won the prestigious 2020 Australian Music Prize. Following the release of We Will Always Love You, The Avalanches performed a very special live streamed DJ set on the rooftop of iconic Melbourne institution Curtin House. The duo spun tunes from their own catalogue along with favorites and deep cuts from their vast and eclectic record collections.
