Cartooning While Black Gallery Exhibit

Black cartoonists from The New Yorker present their work at the Cartooning While Black Gallery Exhibit at ChaShaMa.

Chashama and Art To Ware present Cartooning While Black, a preview of the art from the upcoming One Idea Press title release, The Anti-Racism Activity Book. Art from the volume, written and illustrated by cartoonist and comedian Victor Varnado, will be shown alongside fellow black New Yorker cartoonists, Yasin OsmanAkeem S Roberts, and Jerald Lewis II. This exhibition is curated by Rebecca Mills.

LOCATION: ChaShaMa Gallery, 320 West 23rd Street, NY, NY

WHEN: Thursday, July 15, 2021, to Thursday, August 5th.

The Anti-Racism Activity Book is a social satire created in the style of a children’s puzzle and coloring book. The exhibit will feature crosswords, word finds, and other nostalgic activity book throwbacks, combined with original cartooning work from Varnado, all using humor to illustrate how dumb racism is.

“Traditionally, very few black cartoonists have appeared in the New Yorker, but recent efforts by the magazine and the cartoon editor Emma Allen have made an exhibit like this possible,” said Jason Chatfield, president of The National Cartoonists Society and New Yorker cartoonist.

“Yasin Osman, Akeem S Roberts, Jerald Lewis II, and Victor Varnado’s illustrative works shown together in the same exhibit will be the first time such a presentation has ever happened,” he added.

As a comedian, Victor Varnado has appeared on Late Night With Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live. His writing and cartooning work have been showcased in MAD magazineVICEMarvel Comics and Salon. Varnado was born legally blind and is albinistic. His New Yorker cartoon created in response to the national unrest following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police was one of the magazine’s most engaging pieces of content in 2020. Like Floyd, Victor also grew up in Minneapolis.

Josh A Releases New Album Lonely Vibes

Today, rising singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Josh A releases his much-anticipated new album, LONELY VIBES. Hailed for his malleable hybrid of pop, emo rap, and alternative rock, Josh A has amassed more than 1 billion worldwide combined streams and views, all while still under the mainstream radar and completely independent. LONELY VIBES threads together dexterous rhymes, surges of dynamic rock, and flashes of ethereal electronics into a cohesive story with a deliberate arc meant to mirror his own self-actualization.
“There’s a progression in terms of the message,” Josh explains. “The album starts out really depressed. As it unfolds, I’m building up my confidence. That happened in real life during the making of the record too. I broke through my comfort zone and gained confidence in my artistic ability. It’s a picture of someone who goes through the lowest of lows and slowly bounces back through self-reflection. After you accept yourself and embrace who you are, you become unstoppable.”
LONELY VIBES was heralded earlier this year with the releases of the infectious singles “Painless,” “ANXIOUS (Feat. guccihighwaters),” produced with Southern Beatz, and “Doubt Me,” recorded with co-producer/engineer Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, Motionless In White). PAINLESS (THE REMIXES) was also released earlier this year. The three-track collection includes dynamic new versions reworked by such luminaries as Dutch DJ/producer Arcando, GRAMMY Award-nominated production duo SMLE, and Bordeaux, FR-based producer/DJ Coopex.
“Lonely Vibes encompasses my existence,” Josh says. “I moved out at 18, and I’ve always lived on my own. I thrive on being alone. It’s when I work my hardest. It’s a term I’ve used online, and it’s become a lifestyle. I think a lot of people can relate.
“There are so many vibes and styles on the album that it can pretty much fit anybody’s taste,” he continues. “I’m showing the world everything I’m capable of. There are angrier tracks you can rage to, hype tracks you can go crazy to, and tracks you can really take to heart. As long you get five minutes of peace from the craziness of the world, that’s the main goal for me.”

KEM And Wiz Khalifa × Lie To Me

R&B superstar KEM teams up with multi-Platinum, GRAMMY and Golden Globe- nominated recording artist Wiz Khalifa on the remix of KEM’s chart-topping single “Lie To Me.” Today, the two legendary artists unveiled the official video for the track. In the video, which was directed by Gerald Isaac, KEM’s love awakens in an elegant mansion to find an array of romantic gifts. The camera glides through the home as KEM and Wiz serenade her on a sunny Southern California day. View HERE.

On the remix, which was released exclusively on Facebook last Friday, KEM captures the optimistic, pre-honeymoon stage of romance while Wiz examines a relationship where the partners no longer seem to be on the same team. While the original song was horn-fueled, lively keyboards propel the infectious remix. Download / stream “Lie To Me” Remix Ft. Wiz Khalifa HERE.

Last week, KEM gave a soulful performance of “Lie To Me,” accompanied by his band, on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Watch HERE.

“Lie To Me” spent seven weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Songs Airplay chart. Praising the “smooth and sexy” single, Billboard said, “The body-swaying mid-tempo number perfectly captures the relatable themes of unconditional love and devotion.” “Lie To Me” is the lead single from KEM’s new album, LOVE ALWAYS WINS (Motown), which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Current R&B Albums chart in August 2020.

LOVE ALWAYS WINS includes two versions of the album’s second single, “Live Out Your Love”  a solo version and a collaboration with soul songstress Toni Braxton. The duet topped Billboard’s Adult R&B Songs airplay chart and received an NAACP Image Awards nomination. Other standout tracks include the lush title track, “Love Always Wins” featuring GRAMMY winning gospel music powerhouse Erica Campbell, and the inspiring “Friend Today.” The album was co-produced by KEM and Derek “DOA” Allen, and features contributions by such artists as Anthony Hamilton, Brian Culbertson, James Poyser and Salaam Remi.

KEM has to his credit one Platinum album (KEM: ALBUM II) and two Gold albums (KEMISTRY and INTIMACY). In addition to a career total of eight NAACP Image Awards nominations, KEM has been nominated for three GRAMMY Awards, two Soul Train Awards and a BET Centric Award.

Wiz Khalifa found mainstream success with the release of his 2011 major label debut album, ROLLING PAPER, which contained the massive hits “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” and “No Sleep.” O.N.I.F.C., his 2012 follow-up album, included “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You” featuring The Weeknd. 2014’s BLACC HOLLYWOOD debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Soon after, Wiz’s track “See You Again,” off the FURIOUS 7soundtrack, topped the charts in 95 countries. Recent releases include the Gold-certified studio album ROLLING PAPERS 2 and The Saga of Wiz Khalifa, which features “Contact” featuring Tyga and his latest single, “Still Wiz.”

Zhu × John the Blind – Monster

Zhu unveils new single, Monster, in collaboration with John the Blind.

Grammy-nominated artist Zhu teams up with acclaimed singer/songwriter/producer John The Blind on the new single, Monster, released today via Astralwerks. A stunning departure from Zhu’s dusky signature sound, the track is a sparkling, straight-up celebration of unconditional love.

“I fell in love when you recognized my darkness/Made friends with all my monsters/And you still wanna stay, still wanna stay,” sings John, who takes the lead on vocals, with harmonies and a soulful falsetto closing from Zhu. The two artists produced and performed the track together, with Zhu on bass and John on guitar.

“I wanted to create a summer anthem for the kids who are finally able to go out,” says Zhu.

John The Blind – also known as John Ryan – released isolation, his first full-length album, earlier this year. His vocals have been heard on tracks by Pitbull, Brass Knuckles, and DJ Snake. A multi-Platinum songwriter and producer, he is also known for his work with One Direction, Maroon 5, John Legend, and others.

Tickets go on sale today for Zhu’s October 10 and 11 shows at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and his November 24 and 26 dates at Avant Gardner in Brooklyn. Zhu will perform a unique show each night. Shiba San will join as a special guest on all dates. Zhu will also be performing at numerous 2021 festivals, including ARC, III Points, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Outside Lands.

In May, ZHU played an unprecedented sold-out, six-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO. Westword said, “dancing came easy to the beats of Zhu, who is as ultra-cool as musicians get and wildly talented, bringing in house music that could score a buzzed drive down Sunset Boulevard.” EDM.com praised his “epic, snow-covered return to Red Rocks,” while HITS Daily Double praised Zhu’s performance as “equal parts mesmerizing and invigorating – a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Fresh off the release of his third studio album, Dreamland 2021, Zhu is featured on the cover of the July issue of DJ Mag. Hailing Dreamland 2021 as among the “50 Best Albums of 2021 So Far,” Billboard said, “oscillating between fuzzy, pulsing house (Sweet Like Honey) and spooky, ultra-low BPM, piano-laden meanders through the underworld (I Need That) the sonics are varied but the ambiance is consistently shadowy, falling also into the aural lineage of Zhu’s two previous LPs.” The Los Angeles Times observed, “it’s a record about profoundly missing the club and the shot at connection it offers.”

In an interview with the Times’ August Brown, Zhu talks about the album, the return to live entertainment and his experience as one of the most prominent Asian American musicians working today.

Alongside his music, Zhu has passionately pursued his interest in fashion, playing an essential part in the design of his fashion-forward merch. He is dropping new merchandise from his highly anticipated SUMMER OF DREAMLAND series each Thursday at 10:00 AM PT. The collection includes slides, kimonos, a sequined bomber, a tactical vest and a wrench pendant in addition to bucket hats, t-shirts, socks and hoodies – all in Zhu’s trademark colors, black and orange.

Mr. Lindsay Boyd Q×A

As the world prepares to re-open, luxury travel mastermind Mr. Lindsay Boyd is unveiling the ultimate, action-packed getaway. His incredible $80,000 travel itinerary consists of James Bond themed thrills across four countries. Sight-seeking sensations include participating in high octane races in Ferraris, completing Secret Agent mission assignments, and starring in daring chase scenes in luxury supercars, boats, and helicopters. During all of which, travelers will be filmed so that they can rewind and relive their high stakes adventures forever. Not only will travelers feel like they’re Agent 007, but they will also have the chance to see the Secret Service Agent at the London premier of “No Time to Die.” Planning such an enthralling, experiential, breath-taking trip takes time and luxury travel know-how. As such, 360 Magazine sat down with Mr. Lindsay Boyd to discuss his once-in-a-lifetime travel excursion.

When did you first come up with the concept of James Bond themed travel?

The idea was developed 5 years ago, but now is the first time we can act on it.

How long have you been a fan of the James Bond franchise?

For all 24 previous Bonds.

How long did it take to plan this ultimate bucket list of James Bond themed luxury travel experiences?

Over 4 months.

The idea of filming guests and creating an exciting home-video of their vacation is such a personal and intimate touch to this trip. What inspired you to not only bring guests to see the London Premiere of No Time to Die, but also to let them be the stars of their own stories?

Travel and especially experiential travel are extremely personal in nature, and thus, require some type of memorialization. Film makes it that much more personal.

After the trip, where can guests access their footage?

It will be delivered to them via electronic media.

Why and when did you first become involved with the travel industry?

2015, I opened my firm so that I could go to the Olympics and other events in style and with VIP treatment. I have been traveling all my life and this just seemed to be a natural growth area for me.

This incredible trip offers so many high class, five-star attractions. Is there one experience that you expect guests to be the most impressed by?

That is a hard question, as the experience will be ultra-personal. But, for me, it will be the adrenaline filled chase scenes and the firefight leading to a fast helicopter extraction.

You mentioned that additional locations and adrenaline-filled action events will be announced at a later date. Can you reveal any more information regarding the trip’s itinerary?

We have a racetrack available to us in Italy and supercars at our disposal. We will be doing some exciting activities on a fjord in Norway.

Do you envision creating any other exclusive, themed trips in the future?

Yes, we will be doing several in the coming year, including a Fashion Week in Milan trip that will be to die for. There are some movie related projects that we are looking at, and a series of continuous, international music festivals with VIP access and special activities related to the music and the international locations. We will travel to three or four [locations] in a row and add distinct activities.

National Dishes at Euros Host Cities

The Euros are finally in full swing after a year delay due to the unwelcome impact that Covid-19 had on the sporting industry. Now, as teams are tested regularly, and host cities are scattered about Europe instead of being in one singular nation, there is sufficient time to properly appreciate different host cities’ culture, specifically, their food. This article will consider some of the host cities and their best national dish so you can theme your Euro watching with a delicious accompanying meal.

Wembley Stadium – Fish and Chips

So far in the tournament, Wembley Stadium has been home to a number of surprises, one of the most prevalent being Scotland’s ability to hold on to and secure a 0 – 0 draw against a strong-looking England side. The odds against this result were staggering, as there has never been a 0-0 draw at Wembley between Scotland and England until this game. If you would like to place more bets on upcoming games then you should consider looking into how to find the right sports betting site for you.

Though some of the games have drummed up unexpected results, something that isn’t a surprise is that fish and chips remain one of the most important dishes for anyone heading to Wembley to watch a game. Engrained in English culinary culture, fish and chips were one of the few foods never rationed during World War 2 so that it could keep up the countries moral, and that attitude carries on to this day as it remains one of the most notorious dishes in the country.

Allianz Arena – Kasespatzle

It’s a simple recipe but one that Munich has absolutely mastered over the years. Simply put together some egg noodles, German cheese, and caramelized onions before baking them in an oven and topping with either parsley or chives, then you have the gorgeous dish of Kasespatzle. This can be found in a variety of different Bavarian restaurants and can be washed down perfectly with a glass of Helles.

Stadio Olimpico – Pizza al Taglio

Of course, you think of Rome, you think of pizza. However, pizza has a very broad meaning in Rome as the word is applied plentifully to a variety of different flatbreads and round personal pizzas.

Pizza al tagilo is a distinctly Roman style of pizza and uses either an adorned dough cooked in sheet pans or worked into an oblong shape before being baked. It is served by the slice by being cut with either a knife or scissors, which means you can try as many varieties as you’d like to your desired portion size.

Estadio de la Cartuja – Flamenquines

These are the most delectable meaty snacks available in Sevilla. Though they originally originated in Cordoba, every tapas bar in Sevilla will offer up their own variation on this dish, to the point that it has become a local classic.

It involves slices of Iberian cured ham and chunks of goat’s cheese rolled into a pork loin before dipping them in beaten egg and breadcrumbs and then deep-fried. Allegedly named after Charles V’s Flemish assistants, this delicious dish is perfect for anybody vising Sevilla.

Brain Tumor Infocon

By: Skyler Johnson

The Brain Tumor Infocon was an event that took place this past week, via Zoom because of the pandemic. The event was not for cancer patients themselves but for those that cared for them. They gave four talks on four separate days, each regarding a different topic. I attended the workshop focusing on children and young adults. All different types of people attended, from parents caring for children to friends caring for friends. But they came for the same reason, to try and gain advice towards dealing with cancer patients. And hopefully they left gaining more information then they had entered with. Here’s what I learned from the event:

Brain Cancer Changes Who a Person is

This must be terrifying to go through, but it does make sense. After all, the brain is where a person’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions are stored, and cancer destroys that. When a person has cancer you have to see them change. There’s not much anyone can do about it, there’s no way to prevent it, but it is something that happens nonetheless.

Don’t Be Afraid to Say “Cancer”

For a person with cancer, it can be incredibly isolating when their caregiver doesn’t use the actual word. For children, it can be hard to understand what’s wrong with them if they don’t know what they’re going through if they don’t have the actual term to define it. It’s the same with emotions. Caregivers shouldn’t be afraid to show emotions just because they don’t want to upset those they’re caring for. It’s another thing that can make people feel very alone.

The Question Jar

The presenter recommended a question jar for child patients who may be shy about asking questions regarding their cancer. The caregiver, a parent, would leave the jar in a heavily trafficked part of the house, like a kitchen or living room, and the child can put questions in the jar whenever they’d like. The caregiver would answer their questions periodically, not directly after the child put the concern in. You wouldn’t want them to know you’re keeping track.

Feel Free to Take Time for Yourself

Having to take care of a cancer patient can be a daunting task, and one thing that was heavily encouraged was having caregivers taking time for themselves. They can’t be there for another person if they can’t be there for themselves. Exercise. Watch TV. Walk the dog. Anything that’ll help calm.

Everyone has a Different Definition of Caring

This is the first lesson I learned, and the most important. The presenter asked the group how they defined caring, which is not something I’d thought about previously. Several of the attendees answered, each in different ways. To some people, caring meant what caring means to most people: helping someone else through their day, making sure they’re content. If I answered the question I might’ve used an anecdote. But for one person it meant “loving and hurting,” which is, I can imagine, the most accurate. Caring can be painful. Caring can be suffering. Because you have to watch them fall apart, and get emotional in front of them, and despite all the advice people may give you, while caregiving will always be loving, it will also be hurting.

Interview with Mariah Pearson

By: Skyler Johnson

On July 5th, 2021, the Revlon Creme of Nature “Legacy to Leadership” scholarship inaugural winners were announced. The scholarship was meant to provide funding to students attending HBCUs, or historically black colleges and universities. I had the privilege of interviewing one of the students who received the scholarship: Mariah Pearson, who’s currently attending North Carolina A&T State University

How important is it for you to attend an HBCU?

It was personally extremely important for me because I feel as though a lot of times, in society, people of color, don’t exactly get the opportunities as other people would and I feel that at my HBCU and at other HBCUs across the country were given those opportunities. We’re given resources to better navigate, better operate in the real world… in corporate America and professional settings. It also provided me with a community of people who have similar backgrounds as me and similar interests as me. It’s awesome to go to one.

What is your favorite thing about college thus far?

So far my favorite thing about college would probably be the environment, the way my school feels like a family, and how you can meet new people and it doesn’t feel awkward to introduce yourself. [Talking to a stranger at school] kind of feels like you’re talking to someone you’ve known forever. That’s probably my favorite part, just feeling like I’m at home when I’m not at home.

Briefly, can you go over what you expect to gain out of college?

Of course to get a degree. And learn how to operate in professional settings, but also just for personal development. I feel that going to college has opened a bunch of doors and there’s a bunch of opportunities for new experiences that you might not get if you don’t go to college. Knowing who I am and what I like, who I want to be, how I want to grow, the direction I want to grow in. I definitely feel that college helps you figure that out really quickly.

What’re the most important lessons you’ve learned thus far?

There’s a couple. One of them is definitely: always be on your Ps and Qs, because somebody’s always watching, and you don’t know who’s watching or when, but… somebody’s always seeing you. That’s one of them. Another one is always try and surround yourself with people who you want to see yourself as. You can’t become a winner if you’re not in a group of winners. You can’t be a leader if you’re not in a group of leaders. So it’s important that you surround yourself with people who feed into you positively and of course hold you to a standard that you would hold yourself to. I think those are the main lessons that I’ve learned so far, and I’m sure there are plenty more to come.

What made you want to get into health care?

So I’m going into physical therapy, and when I was first trying to figure out where I was going to go to school and what I was going to go for I… [didn’t] really know… But as an athlete, who had to experience going through physical therapy, I was like, “I kinda like sports, I kinda like helping people, so let’s find a way to mix the two.” And physical therapy is what came up… I later began to grow a love for it through learning how the healthcare system operates, and of course how it treats different people. Because I personally know that being a black woman I’m going to experience a different type of healthcare than anyone else would. Especially since I had family [members] who had gone through physical therapy and had different medical procedures done and they felt that they hadn’t been treated the way they should’ve been, or wanted, to be treated. [Which is why] one of my goals as a health care professional in the future would definitely be to make people feel more comfortable and cared for and appreciated as a patient.

Do you expect to change the world?

Yes, I do. In some way, shape, or form I will [change the world], because another one of my goals as a physical therapist is to establish a [holistic] health care system. [I would not just] tap into the physical but also into the mental state, [asking] how [a patient’s] feeling, [if they were] eating, [if they were] exercising. I’m going to establish a facility where I take care of the whole person and not just say, “oh you’re sick, here’s some medicine.” Personally I’m not a big fan of medication which is why I chose physical therapy, because you’re essentially healing your own body by yourself. There’s no needles, there’s no medicine. It’s purely you moving your body and [exploring] how movement can essentially create a better lifestyle for you.

How excited were you when you received the Revlon HBCU scholarship?

I cried, when I found out, I was so… thankful to Creme of Nature for this scholarship. It’s something that I definitely needed at the time. When I went through the process of figuring out what scholarship I was gonna apply for, and what bubble I fit in, with the scholarship world, they popped up and I [was] like, “this is perfect, this is awesome,” because I [could] make a video explaining who I [was] and what I [wanted] to do and what I [was] passionate about… It [was] purely me telling them about how I really feel about where I want to be in life, and my profession… so it was incredible. I cried. I called my mom. I called everybody.
