Starting A Car That Has Been Sitting For Months

Whether you’re going on vacation for a while or temporarily relocating to another location for work, you may need to leave your vehicle for an extended period of time without using it.

If you are in this situation, it’s important to know how not driving your car for a month or more will affect its performance, including its ability to safely start.

What Happens If You Don’t Start Your Car For A Month?

Cars are designed to be driven, not to sit idle for months. When left unused, engine fluids start to break down and parts that aren’t getting lubricated begin to corrode. Even worse–animals may move in, chewing on anything they can reach. Rodents often chew through wiring harnesses or other car parts that are made out of organic materials, which can cause substantial damage.

Tires are also affected by inactivity. When a car is not being used, the air will slowly start to leak out of its tires, especially in the cold weather. The weight of the vehicle will press down onto the deflating tires, which can cause flat spots. Filling the tires with air often solves this problem, but sometimes flat spots become permanent.

Moisture can also start to accumulate in the gas tank if the car is left unused for a long period of time. Over time, this can lead to corrosion.

How long can a car be left unused? In general, the longer a car sits, the worse these problems can become. But, it’s not all bad news.

Leaving A Car Unused For 3 Months? Here’s What to Do Before Starting It

If you plan on leaving your vehicle unused, it’s important to know how to start a car that has been sitting for two weeks, two months, or even two years.

Even after a few months, most modern cars can still be safely started. That is, providing the battery still holds a charge. However, there are a few simple checks you should make first. This will help you quickly identify problems while making sure your car is safe to start.

Here’s what to do:

Check The Engine Oil

Check the oil level using your vehicle’s dipstick. If you’re not sure where the dipstick is located, refer to your owner’s manual for a diagram. The correct oil level should be between the two indicator marks on the dipstick.

Be sure the engine is cooled off for at least ten minutes before you check the oil. When you go to check the oil not only should you take notice of the level, but also you should observe the color and consistency. If this oil is thick and gritty and the color is dark, then it’s likely time for an oil change. Be aware that if your oil level is low, you should not drive your vehicle until you have topped it off to the recommended level with the recommended oil.

Check All Exterior Lights

Check that your headlights, fog lights, high-beam lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and indicators are all working before you head out on the road. The easiest way to do this is to grab a friend or family member, so one person can activate the various lights and the other can check if they’re working.

Check For Signs Of Leaks

Before you check the engine oil and coolant levels, take a look at the floor under the car to see if there are any signs that something has been leaking. As a general rule, you can typically narrow down the issue by observing the color of leak, though it’s always best to have a professional inspect and diagnose the leak before driving:

  • Black or light brown usually indicates an engine oil leak
  • Red or brown usually indicates a transmission leak
  • Clear, red or brown usually indicates a power steering leak
  • Transparent yellow or brown usually indicates a brake system leak

Driving your car while it’s leaking fluid can cause serious (and expensive) damage. It’s important to avoid driving if there are any signs of a leak. Check for any leaks underneath your car before taking your car for a drive for the first time in months.

Check The Brake Fluid

To check your vehicle’s brake fluid level, you need to identify the brake master cylinder reservoir. It is typically mounted at the rear of the engine, in line with the position of the brake pedal. Your owner’s manual should be able to show you exactly where it’s located.

You’re simply performing a visual check of the fluid level against the markings on the translucent brake fluid reservoir. Remove the cap of the reservoir and note if the fluid looks healthy or dirty. If your brake fluid is low, it could indicate a problem with your brakes that will need repair as soon as possible. Dirty brake fluid can indicate water contamination has occurred, in which the vehicle’s brake system will need to be flushed.

Inspect The Battery

The first issue you may encounter if your car is left idle for an extended period of time is car battery problems. Batteries slowly lose voltage over time when left idle. If you haven’t had your car hooked up to a trickle charger or any other type of voltage maintainer, the voltage will have likely dropped below the amount necessary to start the car. Jump starting your vehicle may solve the problem. After the jump start, let your vehicle run for 5 – 10 minutes to recharge the battery. Then, switch it off and attempt to restart it. If your car won’t restart, there could be a problem with the battery or your vehicle’s electrical system. This issue can leave you stranded if it’s not remedied.

Before you attempt to jump-start your vehicle, remove the battery cables and check that the battery terminals are clean and clear of debris and corrosion.

Ideally, the battery should have a full charge before the vehicle goes into storage. Further, the battery should be disconnected from the engine to prevent discharging. The charge should be checked every three months. The battery should be recharged if it drops under around 12.4 volts.

Check The Gas

It only takes one month for the gas in your tank to start breaking down. As the lighter components of gas evaporate and oxidate, gas loses its combustibility and becomes less effective. As it degrades, it forms a gummy residue that gets released into the fuel system– increasing the likelihood of a blockage occurring. Old fuel can cause an engine to misfire and stall.

Obviously, we don’t recommend sniffing gasoline, but gas that has started to break down will have a distinct sour smell that resembles the smell of varnish. One option is to siphon a small amount out of your fuel tank and check the color. Old gas will be darker than fresh gasoline, and you may even be able to see the gumminess that have started to form.

If your car has been sitting for three months or longer, it is recommended to drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel. For a car that has been sitting for a month or two, it is recommended to top up the fuel tank with fresh gas and dilute the old gas before it passes through your vehicle’s fuel system.

Finally, if you find you just aren’t driving your car much and it’s likely to sit idle for 30 days or more, a fuel stabilizer should be added to the gas. This will prevent degradation for up to 12 months. It is the easiest way to avoid damage to your cars fuel system.

Inspect The Tires

A visual check of the tires should be performed to make sure they are in good condition, before attempting to drive the vehicle. Air pressure should be checked and adjusted to the manufacturer’s recommended psi. This can be found on a sticker that is usually located on the driver’s door jamb. You could also find the recommended psi for your tires in your owner’s manual.

Upon inspection, your tires may look normal. But, when you get behind the wheel to take your car for its first spin in months, instead of the familiar smooth ride you may feel a vibration through the steering wheel and hear an unfamiliar noise. This is caused by a flat spot in the tire– a problem for any car that sits idle for extended periods of time.

This occurs when a stationary tire has to bear the load of a vehicle for an extended period. As the weight of the vehicle presses down, the bottom of the tire spreads out on the ground. As time goes on, the rubber gets stiffer, leaving flat spots on the tire.

Generally speaking, as you drive the car and the tires get warm and regain flexibility, the flat spots will disappear. This usually takes around 15 minutes. In extreme winter temperatures, these flat spots can become permanent if a vehicle hasn’t moved for several months.

Tires can develop flat spots if your car sits for an extended amount of time. Check your tire pressure before starting your car again to make sure it is at the recommended psi.

Check For Rodents

When the weather cools off, rats and mice look for warmer shelter and can be disastrous for car owners as their engine bay doubles as this season’s hottest rodent hotel. After mice have made a car their new home, their sharp teeth can cause serious damage to engine hoses, plastic panels, and wiring.

Signs that your car may have a mouse problem include:

  • Droppings and an associated bad smell
  • Unfamiliar noises when you switch on the fan or heater, indicating the presence of a nest
  • Food scraps in unusual places
  • Check engine light on your dash, indicating wiring damage
  • Bite marks on hoses and wires

Getting mice out of your car can be a time-consuming job. Not only will you have to find and remove their nest, but you’ll also have to clean and disinfect the area around the nest, and more than likely repair any damage they caused. There are many methods to prevent mice from moving back in such as spraying peppermint oil or putting out moth balls. Forget the ultrasonic sound repellants though–they won’t do anything besides put a hole in your wallet.

How Often Should You Start Your Car

Leaving a car unused for three months—or even three weeks—is not ideal. If possible, start your vehicle a couple of times per month when it is not being used. It’s best to not only start the vehicle, but to also drive it for about ten miles before putting it back in storage.

Starting the vehicle without taking it out for a quick spin will warm up the engine, but nothing else. It could also drain the vehicle’s battery, which will make it harder to start next time.

On the other hand, starting the car and driving it for 10 miles will fully warm up other parts of the vehicle, including the transmission, brakes, and suspension. Driving this short distance will also give your vehicle’s battery a chance to recharge, so it’s easier to start in the future.

Consider asking a close friend or relative to help.  Maybe they can take your car out once in a while when they go out to dinner or to run chores.

How to Prepare For Not Driving Your Car For A Month

If you plan on leaving a car unused for 3 months, there are certain steps you can take to keep it in good condition during this period of inactivity. Here’s what to do:

  • Use a car cover. You should always cover a vehicle that is not being used—even if you are storing it indoors. A car cover can protect your vehicle from long-term storage hazards, such as bad weather and animals.
  • Wash it. Be sure to thoroughly wash your vehicle before putting it in storage. Leaving water stains or other debris on your vehicle for a long period of time can lead to paint damage.
  • Get an oil change. An oil change will remove the dirty oil, which contains contaminants that could damage your engine while the vehicle isn’t being used.
  • Fill your gas tank. If the gas tank is empty or even half full, moisture will start to accumulate if the vehicle is not being used. To prevent this problem, fill the gas tank prior to putting your vehicle in storage.
  • Place the vehicle on jack stands. If you plan on not driving your car for a month or more, it’s best to take the wheels off and prop the vehicle up on jack stands. This requires additional work, but it will prevent flat spots and other forms of tire damage.
  • Don’t use the parking brake. Rust can form in the braking system if the vehicle is left in storage for a long period of time. If the parking brake is applied, this rust can cause the brake pads to fuse together with the rotor. That’s why it’s best not to use the parking brake before leaving your vehicle for a month or longer.

Following these tips can help preserve the life of your vehicle while it’s not being used.

What to Do If Your Car Takes A Long Time to Start After Sitting

Found a potential problem? Is your car taking a long time to start? Or unsure about any of these steps? The next step is to get a professional to inspect your vehicle and advise you of your options. Car repairs can be expensive, but giving your vehicle a thorough check-over before hitting the road will save you money in the long run.

Honoring Mary Wilson’s Memory – Black Music × Pride Month

Legendary artist/author and original and founding member of the Supremes, Mary Wilson was also known as a tireless advocate for the Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

The Motown/UMe April release of Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition represented an ongoing effort to honor her memory and her passion for celebrating life through music. Her work to raise awareness of the need for tolerance and equality is especially poignant during June, which is dedicated to Black Music Month and Pride Month; her music provides a fitting backdrop to celebrations and events — from intimate events to large-scale community celebrations.

Ms. Wilson believed in the power of music, especially the joy The Supremes brought to the world. She carried on that legacy throughout her career and right up to the days before her untimely passing in February, just weeks before the release of Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition.

“The music was inclusive. It didn’t matter who you were, the music touched your soul. Music, to me, brought all the souls together. I’ve always said that Motown was an ambassador for love and for friendship because it brought people together.” – Mary Wilson in a 2015 interview with Pride Source.

Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition was originally announced to celebrate her 77th Birthday and honor her history and legacy with the first of her album projects. Ms. Wilson, who retained ownership of her solo recordings, wanted to make the album – and much more – available to her many fans around the world. Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition is a newly compiled version of her solo album, originally released by Motown in 1979, that will now be available on all digital platforms for the first time. Added to the album are eight incredible bonus tracks, four of them unreleased, including the legendary tracks recorded as a follow-up to the album produced by Gus Dudgeon (Elton John, Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, et al). Featured as the lead single is a brand-new song, “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” produced by Richard Davis and co-written with Angelo Bond, who previously had great success as a co-writer with General Johnson and Greg Perry for “Bring The Boys Home.”

Mary Wilson, who had many fond memories around recording her solo debut, was so excited about the release of this album that, after finalizing details with UMe, she created an impromptu “teaser,” posting what was to be her final YouTube video. “I finally decided how to work with Universal, and they are going to release new Mary Wilson recordings,” she said. “Yes! At last! At last,” adding that the expanded version of the album, known by her and to fans as “Red Hot,” referring to its lead single, will include the Dudgeon productions – and something new. “It was four wonderful songs that were never released… and I also have some other songs, some surprising new songs… Thank you Universal for chiming in with me and helping this come true. Hopefully some of that will be out on my birthday, March 6th… I’ve got my fingers crossed.”

Sadly, the world mourned the sudden passing of Mary Wilson on February 8th, which also marked the 56th anniversary of The Supremes’ #1 hit, “Stop! In the Name Of Love.” She was a world-renowned singer, best-selling author, a humanitarian, artist rights advocate, philanthropist, cultural ambassador for the U.S. appointed by Colin Powell, but she was best known as a “Supreme.” She was the co-founder of the original Supremes, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, which signed to Motown in January 1961, making this year their 60th anniversary. The group broke down barriers by becoming the world’s most popular female singing trio, with an unprecedented string of 12 number one hits, 33 top 40 singles, a record breaking 5 consecutive number ones, and the first number one album for a female group. Mary Wilson is the only member with the group from their signing in 1961 to their disbanding in 1977. Their legendary history is the foundation for dozens of books, movies, and even three Broadway musicals.

But the often-overlooked history is of the solo careers of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. Ballard had previously released an album on ABC Records while, upon leaving the Supremes, Mary Wilson released her self-titled solo album debut on Motown, her label for the previous 18 years. Mary Wilson had the potential of becoming a dance classic. Famed Motown Producer Hal Davis, known for #1 hits on the Jackson 5, Thelma Houston and Diana Ross crafted a lush disco album for Wilson, with six dance tracks and a mid-tempo ballad. Wilson recorded the album while pregnant with her youngest son, Raphael, and for the album’s cover shoot she was wrapped in a jacket to hide the pregnancy.

“Red Hot” was the obvious lead single. But just prior to the release of the album the infamous Disco Demolition Night took place at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 12, 1979. The “Disco Sucks” movement impacted the release of Mary Wilson, and the single reached #85 on the dance chart and #95 on the R&B chart. This new collection retrieves for history the song’s rare 12” and 7” mixes, which were unique from the album’s version. Despite being loved by fans, and the release of a second single, “Pick Up the Pieces” in the U.K., the Mary Wilson album did not get the recognition it deserved.

In 1980, Mary Wilson headed to Europe to record with Elton John’s producer, Gus Dudgeon. The late Dudgeon, who started as Decca Records’ in-house recording engineer, became a key creative collaborator with Elton John, producing seven No. 1 albums, in addition to creating masterworks with David Bowie, Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, and many more.

Wilson wrote in her second autobiography, Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, “I was very excited about these four songs. It wasn’t the formula disco of my first album. Two of the songs were big ballads. The other two were rock and roll in the style of Tina Turner’s mid-eighties hits; I was certainly ahead of the time.” Three of the four songs were never released. The fourth song, “You Dance My Heart Around the Stars,” first made available in 2015 on a collection of the co-writer’s, Steve Kalinich, a frequent collaborator of the Beach Boys, is considered one of Wilson’s finest performances.

In 1986 Mary Wilson wrote her best-selling autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme, followed by two more books, Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, and Supreme Glamour. Although Mary continued to record and release music through the rest of her career, fans have continually requested to hear this music. These songs remain among the most requested items in the Motown catalog.

While recording more music over the last 10 years, Mary Wilson reconnected with Richard Davis, executive of Gold Forever Music, a publishing company established by Eddie Holland after leaving Motown. In the early days of Motown, Holland-Dozier-Holland was the songwriting team responsible for The Supremes’ string of hit records.

While Mary continued to record, she kept a journal with her most personal thoughts, perspective, outlook, philosophy on life, beliefs based on her experiences and topics of the day. Richard Davis discussed this song with Wilson. Mary told Davis and Bond that their lyrics were able to capture and articulate her feelings into song and help her tell her story. As she was watching and writing about her feelings about the political unrest and the division in the country, Mary felt strongly about releasing “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” now in the hopes of spreading a positive message through music.

Lesser Known Fourth of July Stops

Kaboom Town!, Addison, TX

Everything is bigger in Texas, so it is not surprising that on July 3 there’s a “best of” fireworks show that lasts for a solid 30 minutes just outside of Dallas. It is not only locals who brag about the patriotic display, but it’s also received accolades from the American Pyrotechnics Association, too! Spectacular views can be found throughout Addison but one of the best ways to take in the show is to book a watch party at a local restaurant or hotel. The parties typically include live music and special Fourth of July morsels and libations, served with a side of festivities.

RVers can stay overnight at Sandy Lake MH & RV Resort near Dallas. The resort’s amenities include a dog park, fitness center and swimming pool.

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, Near Dayton, OH

For more than a century, the U.S. Air Force has defended the United States in the air, space, and cyberspace through the skill and bravery of American Airmen and Airwomen. To truly experience the spirit of America’s Wild West, plan to attend the four-day Independence Day celebration in Cody that runs July 1-4. Since 1919, Cody has been showcasing the toughest and most talented cowboys and cowgirls, legitimately earning its title as Rodeo Capital of the World.

During the holiday, Cody is hosting the PRCA Rodeo where contestants compete for $400,000 in prize money. The weekend also includes three parades where the red, white, and blue will be on full display – a Kiddies’ Parade on July 2 and a Stampede Parade on July 3 and 4. At dusk on July 4, fireworks will explode above the Wyoming River. Cody is also home to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West with five museums under one roof. Explore Plains Indian cultures, trailblazing cowboys and cowgirls, classic and modern western artworks, and more.

Cody is 55 miles from the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, which became the country’s first national park on March 1, 1872. In addition to its exploding geysers, bubbling paint pots, mesmerizing hot springs, and travertine terraces, Yellowstone is also home to the United States’ national symbol, the bald eagle.

RVers can stay overnight at Ponderosa Camp Ground

Independence Rock Historic Site, Alcova, WY

Travelers who happen to be in southern WY traveling on State Route 220 should keep an eye out for the Independence Rock Rest Area. The granite rock is approximately 130 feet high and was a well-known landmark on the Oregon, Mormon, and California emigrant trails. More than 5,000 names are carved on the rock by 19th century pioneers who traveled treacherous trails and braved tough conditions in search of their American dream in the Western states. One of the earliest names carved into the rock is M.K. Hugh and is dated 1824. Hiking is allowed on and around the rock.

Overnight accommodations aren’t plentiful near Independence Rock Historic Site so it’s best visited along the way to another destination.

Freedom Park, Omaha, NE

Located along the banks of the Missouri River in the heartland of the country, Freedom Park honors the United States Navy. The free outdoor park and museum showcase two impressive pieces of military hardware – the minesweeper USS Hazard, which received three battle stars for its service during World War II, and the Cold War-era training submarine USS Marlin.

RVers can spend the night at West Omaha / NE Lincoln KOA Holiday, which offers 85-plus RV sites that are satellite friendly.

AmericaFest, Pasadena, CA

AmericaFest, held at the Rose Bowl Stadium, promises to deliver the largest Fourth of July fireworks display west of the Mississippi. The day-long event is a celebration of all things red, white, and blue and includes tailgating, live entertainment, motorcycle stunt show, and a world-renowned fireworks show.

RVers can stay overnight at Orangeland RV Park conveniently located nearby a number of Anaheim attractions.

Columbia State Historic Park, CA

While the Gold Rush produced great wealth for some, it also transformed the United States. As miners rushed in, the population of California swelled, helping to accelerate its admission to the Union as the 31st state.

Two years after gold was found in 1848 at Sutter’s Mill, the town of Columbia was established. Today, visiting Columbia State Historic Park is like traveling back in time. Visitors are surrounded by the largest collection of gold-rush-era structures in the state of California. Merchants are dressed in 1850s attire, there is the smell of coal smoke from the blacksmith shop, and the rumble of a stagecoach as it arrives in town. Stroll down Main Street, stop in the vintage shops and eateries or try to strike it rich by panning for gold.

Columbia is one of three gold-rush towns clustered together on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park, which is famous for its giant sequoias, dramatic waterfalls, and granite cliffs.

RVers can stay overnight at Black Oak Casino and Resort – a perfect home base for visiting Yosemite and touring the Gold Country.

Traditional Fourth of July Stops

Freedom Trail, Black Heritage Trail, and USS Constitution, Boston, MA

Since Boston is considered the birthplace of the American Revolution, a stop in this seminal city is a must. Boston-based events that led up to the Revolutionary War include the Boston Tea Party and Siege of Boston. Naturally, many of the leading American Patriots, James Otis, Samuel Adams, John Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere, hailed from Boston.

A 2.5-mile walk along the Freedom Trail includes 16 locations that are significant to the United States’ fight for independence. The trail, most of which is marked by a red brick path, includes the Old South Meeting House, Old State House, and Paul Revere’s House, each of which charge an admission fee. The Boston Common, Granary Burying Ground (the final resting place of John Hancock, Paul Revere, and several other historic figures), Bunker Hill Monument and ground markers that denote a historic site or event round out the stops along the Freedom Trail. Visitors can take their own self-guided tour or book a private tour, many of which feature knowledgeable guides in 18th century garb.

The National Park Service offers free guided tours and brochures for self-guided exploration of the Black Heritage Trail. The trail is a 1.6-mile walking tour of 14 historic sites that explores the history of Boston’s 19th century African American community who primarily lived on the north slope of Beacon Hill. The tour, which is the largest collection of historic sites relating to life within a free Black community prior to the Civil War, includes the Museum of African American History, 54th Regiment Memorial, and the African Meeting House. The trail also features several stations on the Underground Railroad, which escaped slaves used to flee from the South to freedom in the North and Canada. In 1783, Massachusetts was the first state to abolish slavery.

While the USS Constitution (also known as Old Ironsides) was not part of the American Revolution, she is a testament to the honor, courage, and commitment of U.S. sailors to protecting our country. Launched in 1797 from Boston, she fought in the War of 1812 and survived a barrage of cannonballs fired from by British. She remains a commissioned vessel with a crew of officers and enlisted personnel.

RVers can spend the night at Boston Minuteman Campground and take advantage of the nearby hiking and biking trails.

Independence Hall and Museum of the American Revolution, Philadelphia, PA

The Declaration of Independence (a list of grievances against the King of England to justify separation from British rule) and The Constitution (a charter of the United States government ratified by the states) are foundational documents of the United States. Take a guided tour of Independence Hall to see the Assembly Room where both were signed in 1776 and 1787, respectively. Independence Hall, originally known as the Pennsylvania State House, also features an original draft of The Constitution.

Just steps from Independence Hall is the Museum of the American Revolution. Opened in 2017, the museum shares the compelling stories of the diverse people and complex events that sparked America’s path toward liberty, equality, and self-government. Amazing artifacts include an extensive collection of Revolutionary War weapons, diaries, and personal letters. See a replica of the Boston Liberty Tree (where the revolution was first discussed), General George Washington’s tent, and a 13-star flag. Don’t miss the special exhibit, “Flags and Founding Documents, 1776-Today,” that showcases dozens of rare American flags, a copy of the first newspaper printing of the Declaration of Independence, and historic early state constitutions.

RVers can stay overnight at Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday, a peaceful country campground just 20 minutes from Philadelphia.

Statue of Liberty, New York, NY

At a graceful 305’ tall, the Statue of Liberty is a towering symbol of American freedom. The statue was sculpted by French artist Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and gifted to the United States by France in 1875 to commemorate the countries’ alliance during the American Revolution. In her right hand, Lady Liberty holds a torch above her head. In her left hand, she carries a tablet inscribed with JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals), the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

The statue can be viewed from various vantage points along the Hudson River. For an up-close- and-personal look, take the ferry that departs from Battery Park to Liberty Island where the Statue of Liberty stands.

RVers can stay overnight at Liberty Harbor RV, which also delivers views of the Statue of Liberty and is next to Liberty Harbor Marina.

The National Mall, Washington, D.C.

The nation’s capital is packed with patriotic things to do and see – many of which are free.

To meet all the presidents of our great country, visit the National Portrait Gallery, which showcases the stories and people who shaped America. The America’s Presidents exhibit features the largest, most complete collection of presidential portraits outside of the White House. The gallery also includes paintings of Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Michelle Obama, and several others.

The free Smithsonian museums located on the National Mall include the National Museum of American History (see the flag that inspired the Star-Spangled Banner), National Museum of the American Indian (shares the diversity of culture, language, history, tradition, and futures of indigenous peoples of North and South America), and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2017. It’s the only national museum devoted to the documentation of African American life, art, history, and culture. Significant artifacts include garments worn by slaves, a Bible owned by rebellion leader Nat Turner, Emmett Till’s glass-topped casket, training aircraft used by the Tuskegee Institute, and an invitation to President Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

RVers can spend the night at Cherry Hill Park that offers full hook-up sites and a number of other amenities.

Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. area

Just outside of D.C., it’s worth a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Rich with American history on acres of well-manicured grounds, everyone can deepen their knowledge of our great country.

Visit the gravesites of Presidents Taft and John F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery. Taft, the 27th president, was the first president to be buried in Arlington after his death in 1930. Kennedy, the 35th president, was laid to rest in 1963 after his assassination. Most presidents choose to be buried in their home states.

According to the cemetery website: First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy wanted her husband’s gravesite to be accessible to the American public. In selecting a location, she consulted with the president’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, and Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara—both of whom are also buried at Arlington.

In addition to the presidential graves, the cemetery is the final resting place for many notable Americans, including veterans of the American Revolutionary War, military leaders, astronauts, Supreme Court Chief Justices, and many others.

RVers can spend the night at Cherry Hill Park that offers full hook-up sites and a number of other amenities.

Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon, VA

Just a short drive from Washington, D.C., is Mount Vernon – an American landmark and the historic home of America’s first president, George Washington, and his wife, Martha. The Washingtons lived in a two-story Georgian mansion overlooking the Potomac River on an estate that was originally 8,000 acres.

Step back into history and tour the Washingtons’ plantation home, a blacksmith shop, stable, smokehouse, slave quarters, and other outbuildings that supported daily life. An extensive museum shares background on Washington’s life prior to becoming president and the legacy he left behind. The site also includes a memorial to the hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children who worked the plantation.

A unique way to visit Mount Vernon is by boat. Families can travel down the Potomac River and see the Washington Monument, United States Capitol, and other historic sites from a completely different vantage point. The boat trip is narrated and takes approximately three hours round trip. Families disembark at Mount Vernon and have four hours to explore the estate. Mount Vernon can also be reached by bike via the scenic Mount Vernon Trail. The ride takes approximately one hour, and bikes can be rented in Alexandria.

RVers can spend the night at Cherry Hill Park that offers full hook-up sites and a number of other amenities.

Colonial Williamsburg, VA

Founded in 1699, Williamsburg was established by England as the capital of the Virginia Colony. Today, Colonial Williamsburg is dedicated to preserving and sharing 18th century colonial life during the time when the United States was being formed.

Recognized as the world’s largest living history museum, a visit to Colonial Williamsburg is an immersive experience. Costumed and wigged interpreters stroll the streets talking in the language and diction of the 1700s. The city’s colonial shops, taverns, homes, kitchens, and gardens are tended to by weavers, wigmakers, and residents of the time. Watch as blacksmiths recreate weapons and hardware that supplied the armies during the Revolutionary War. Tour the Capitol and Courthouse to learn about the founding principles of Virginia government and justice in the 18th century. Book a carriage or wagon ride and dine at a historic tavern serving Colonial-inspired fare, including Welsh Rarebit, Savory Pasty, and Salet of Snipped Greens.

Learn about the role American Indians played in creating a new country and the impact of the Declaration of Independence on African Americans in Williamsburg. When the Declaration was written, more than 52 percent of Williamsburg’s population was enslaved. Take in a museum theatre exploration of African American perspectives on the Declaration, the revolutions it inspired, and the ongoing struggle for equality and freedom in America.

To commemorate the Fourth of July, the city is hosting a celebration on historic Duke of Gloucester Street with patriotic festivities, public readings of the Declaration of Independence, musical performances, and a fireworks display.

RVers can spend the night at American Heritage RV Park with its lush meadows and wooded sites. The park also offers premium sites with patio furniture, an outdoor fireplace and extra space.

Colonial Parkway, VA

An entire Fourth of July can be spent in Virginia’s Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. The 23-mile Colonial Parkway connects the three towns and has numerous scenic pull-offs with historical markers that provide descriptions of the view. A day-long Liberty Celebration at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown features outdoor living-history experiences that allow visitors to explore life in Washington’s Continental Army, see artillery demonstrations, and watch performances by the Fifes and Drums of York Town. In the city of Yorktown, evening activities include a bell-ringing ceremony, patriotic concert, and an amazing fireworks display booming over the York River.

RVers can spend the night at American Heritage RV Park.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, Atlanta, GA

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an African American Baptist minister and one of America’s foremost Civil Rights activists from 1955 until 1968, when he was assassinated. At the age of 35, he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and donated the $54,123 cash prize to advancing the Civil Rights movement. See Dr. King’s boyhood home, the original Ebenezer Baptist Church, and The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (“The King Center”). The National Park Service has restored many of the neighboring buildings to reflect the 1930s and 1940s, the time when Dr. King grew up. Today, visitors can step into that era and imagine themselves walking down the street, hearing the noise of the lively neighborhood, and experiencing what life was like in those tumultuous times.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Keystone, SD

This colossal stone edifice in the Black Hills of South Dakota took 14 years to complete from 1927 to 1941 and cost approximately $1 million. The heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln are 60 feet tall and were carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore. The four presidents were chosen to represent the nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation.

On July 3, presidential reenactors George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt will be strolling the grounds, giving talks about their presidency, posing for photographs, and providing autographs.

And, while Mount Rushmore isn’t hosting its typical Fourth of July fireworks display, many of the surrounding small towns are. Throughout the Badlands and Black Hills, American pride will be on full display with parades, re-enactors, Old West shootouts, cook-offs, car show ‘n shines, live music, ice cream socials, farmers markets, and more.

RVers visiting Mount Rushmore can stay overnight at American Buffalo Resorts or Mount Rushmore KOA Resort at Palmer Gulch in the heart of the Black Hills.

News & Topics

“Butoh” is a form of dance performance that began in Japan in the 1960s and then spread to the rest of the world. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, performance inspired Butoh will be available online as a part of the TOKYO REAL UNDERGROUND dance festival. This festival is one of “Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL Special 13” projects sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo. (a series of events being held to celebrate culture and arts in Tokyo in culmination with the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020). Experimental performances will be performed by a diverse mix of veteran and new artists.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched the Tokyo 2020 Portal Site as a way for people to stay up to date on all news related to the Tokyo 2020 Games. The site has information on the Tokyo 2020 Games, places to visit in Tokyo during the events, the torch relay, ways to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, and information for people overseas who cannot attend the events. Make sure to check the portal site for real-time information on the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Up for a trip back in time to one of Tokyo’s most well-known commercial districts? Using revolutionary virtual technology, you can visit the Ginza 4 Chome intersection during the Edo Era (1850s), the Meiji Era (1910s), and the Showa Era (1940s). The area during these time periods has been amazingly recreated in a virtual space that seems so real that you’ll swear you’re actually there. Experience how Ginza changed through the years with the online “Tokyo Time Machine Project – Ginza VR.”

Do you enjoy saunas and art? The art collective teamLab has created an exhibition in Roppongi, the likes of which the world has never been seen before. This new exhibition gives you a nuanced experience as you view artwork in saunas. You’ll be able to enjoy several works, including a new group of pieces based on teamLab’s latest project “Supernature Phenomenon.” The exhibition runs until August 31. Tokyo is always the best place to enjoy the latest creations of teamLab. Needless to say, teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets, both of these are must-visit museums in Tokyo!

Tokyo nightlife just got a lot more sensational. On April 1, Japan’s premier magic theater, MAHOU Dining Bar OSMAND ~The Gate of Iaract~, reopened in Roppongi. A new LED monitor installed on the stage. You can see the various landscapes and images on the large LED monitor. OSMAND delivers a more fantastic and powerful magic show than ever. MAHOU is able to get many of the world-renowned magicians to put on shows. For the first time in Japan, you’ll be able to enjoy a combination of in-person and online magic shows.

Over the past 15 years, the creative collective known as “rhizomatiks” has been making works that transcend the realm of media art. From now, until June 20, you can enjoy their old and new works throughout their archive at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) ’s special large-scale exhibition entitled rhizomatiks_multiplex. Kiyosumi Shirakawa, the area where the MOT is located, also saw an increase on residency of international artists. A new project also allows you to view these works online.

Asakusa today. New vitality in a historical town

The COVID-19 pandemic has left Tokyo almost devoid of overseas tourists. The city never rests, however, and has been busy making preparations for the day when we can all travel freely over national borders. Tokyo carries on with the traditional, while always in the process of recreating itself. Read more here.

Tonino Lamborghini: A Lifestyle Brand

When high quality meets bold design, a unique accessory is born!

Founded in 1981 by Tonino Lamborghini, 2nd generation of the LAMBORGHINI industrial dynasty, the company has evolved into a luxury lifestyle and design powerhouse, creating superlative watches, sunglasses, leather, smartphones, restaurants, jet-setters hotels, food, and beverage, from coffee to vodka and energy drinks, distributed in 40 countries around the world.

” In 1981, I started up my new Tonino Lamborghini Style and Accessories company. At the time, I assisted my father in the family group, but I felt the need to do something exclusively of my own, different from the world of engines. I have always been interested in design and accessories, and I took inspiration from my engineering background. I’ve always loved products linked to mechanics; thus, it was obvious that the first accessory I designed was a watch. And even today, in every product I create, there must not be missing a detail somehow related to my family’s automotive and engineering heritage. Uncompromising spirit, Italian ingenuity, and design – together with the timeless legend of a brand recognized worldwide: are the values that characterize my brand. My company’s mission is clear: to spread the passion and spirit of Italy with unique and distinctive products, inspired by Italian industrial design and the Lamborghini family’s story”

“Tonino Lamborghini in 2021 will celebrate its 40th anniversary. My father founded the Italian spirit to the world through a series of products that range from watches, eyewear, leather goods  three corporate core businesses furniture, hospitality projects, and branded beverages. A real lifestyle experience brand!”

With the support of the designers of its Centro Stile, constantly under the supervision of Tonino Lamborghini, the company has designed and manufactured timepiece models that have become real style icons over the years.

Following the Lamborghini family’s vision and constant inspiration, the company’s designers have created unique watches like the Spyder, a watch totally inspired by the shield of the brand’s emblem that encloses the “Miura raging bull,” or timeless pieces like the Cuscinetto, whose first edition goes back to 1983.

The new Tonino Lamborghini Swiss Watches collection has been completely conceived and designed by Ferruccio Lamborghini, Tonino’s first son, representing the third generation of the Lamborghini family. From his famous grandfather, Ferruccio has inherited the name and the passion for motorcycles and high speed: he is a motorcycling champion in the Italian Championship.

With a team of designers and a historic Swiss watch manufacturer, Ferruccio has created eight new lines of timepieces that elegantly combine his father’s past and his experience in the 2-wheels world. A brand-new range of performing Swiss watches dedicated to daring, bold, audacious, intrepid, fearless, and pioneering people, with remarkable resourcefulness.
