Jon Batiste Is the First Music Guest On Colbert

JON BATISTE IS FIRST MUSICAL GUEST BACK IN THE ED SULLIVAN THEATER ON THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT, WATCH HIS EPIC PERFORMANCE OF HIS SINGLE FREEDOM FEATURING THE HARLEM GOSPEL CHOIR

Last night, Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe winning musician Jon Batiste gave the first musical performance back in the Ed Sullivan Theater on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he serves as bandleader and music director.

Batiste performed an epic rendition of his single FREEDOM from his album WE ARE, which featured the Harlem Gospel Choir, seven trumpeters including GRAMMY-winning Keyon Harrold, Batiste’s band Stay Human, and dancers with choreography by Emmy-winning Jemel McWilliams. Watch the performance HERE.

There is no better time for Jon Batiste’s song of the summer FREEDOM, a funk-driven 70s-pop banger that Entertainment Weekly called an exhilarating, horn-heavy celebration of independence. Last Thursday, Batiste released the official music video for his single FREEDOMWATCH HERE – an electrifying love letter to his hometown of New Orleans. The video has already surpassed 10MM views across Facebook and YouTube.

In the video, Batiste leads the ultimate second line through the streets, linking with the legendary St. Augustine High School Marching 100, the Joyful Choir of New Orleans, Queen Tahj of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indian Tribe, dancers, musicians, and residents alike.

Jon Batiste has had a breakout year. The Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA winning musician’s hit song I NEED YOU reached #1 on the AAA Radio Charts, his album WE ARE debuted in the Billboard Top R&B Charts, Top Album Charts, and Top 200, his I NEED YOU music video surpassed 10MM views, he’s appeared on American Idol,  Live with Kelly and Ryan, The Today Show, The Late Late Show with James Corden, CBS This Morning as guest and co-host, and of course the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

We Are represents a vivid turn from straight jazz to joyful, danceable pop and neo-soul…a bold declaration of conscience… – Vanity Fair

WE ARE, shows another side, with profound reflections on race and identity in America and a soul-stirring mix of gospel, jazz, funk and more. – NPR Music

[Batiste] displays a rich soul vision, evoking Al Green, modern R&B, and New Orleans jazz Rolling Stone

On WE ARE, Batiste presents a captivating musical experience to the world rooted in catharsis, joy, freedom, contemplation and sensuality. It’s a love letter to his southern roots and the heritage of Black Music with guest appearances by Mavis Staples, Quincy Jones, Zadie Smith, PJ Morton, Trombone Shorty, St Augustine Marching 100, his father Michael Batiste, grandfather David Gauthier and many more. It is a meditation steeped in the sounds of the times with collaborators including POMO (Anderson.Paak), Ricky Reed (Lizzo), Jahaan Sweet (Drake, Eminem) and others.

I’m publicly known for some things already, says Batiste. But there’s so much more to know about me. It’s always been there. Now is the time to show the world my full artistry.

Batiste continues, WE ARE is a message of love for humanity, of humble reverence for our past, and of a hopeful future, in which we are the ones who can save us. The art reveals its motive to you. You just have to wait for the Spirit to tell you what it wants.

A special thanks to Coach for dressing members of the cast of the FREEDOM video.

ABOUT JON BATISTE

One of the best-known musicians of his generation, virtuoso pianist, singer, bandleader, educator and television personality Jon Batiste has spent his career bringing that music back to where it started — that is, with the people. From his days at Juilliard, where he established his Stay Human band by playing around New York City’s subways and in street performances he called love riots, to his work since 2015 as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Kenner, Louisiana native has consistently channeled his superb technical skill and deep knowledge of jazz tradition towards a specific, intentional purpose: making people’s lives better and brighter, one harmonaboard (that’s harmonica and keyboard, combined) solo at a time.

Born into Louisiana’s legendary musical Batiste family, Jon has performed and recorded widely since his teens. His flexibility as an artist, his fluency in jazz as well as popular music of all stripes, has allowed him to collaborate with legends from Wynton Marsalis, a mentor since his Juilliard days, to Prince — as well as many of the widely-varied artists who appear on the Late Show.

Batiste’s marquee performances have ranged from the Grammys, to the Kennedy Center Honors, to the US Open and the NBA All-Star Game — in 2015, Batiste and the Stay Human Band became the first group to play the main stage at both the Newport Jazz and Folk festivals.

Batiste played himself on the HBO series Treme and appeared in director Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer — most recently, his music was featured in the 2020 Disney/Pixar film Soul. Batiste won a Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award for his participation in the soundtrack alongside Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and the trio are currently nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA for Best Soundtrack.

He’s been awarded the American Jazz Museum Lifetime Achievement Award, the Harry Chapin ASCAP Humanitarian Award and appeared on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list; Batiste also currently serves as the Music Director of The Atlantic and the Co-Artistic Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Jon Batiste is devoted to the education and mentorship of young musicians. He has led his own Social Music Residency and Mentoring Program sponsored by Chase, as well as master classes throughout the world. He has also led several cultural exchanges, beginning in 2006, while still a teen, with the Netherlands Trust, which brought students from the USA and Holland to perform with him at the Royal Concertgebouw and Carnegie Hall.

Batiste balances a demanding performance schedule with public speaking engagements, masterclasses, brand partnerships, community activism and acting roles. His composing and songwriting will be featured in his large-scale, genre-melding symphonic work American Symphony, set to premiere at Carnegie Hall in 2021 and he has been developing a Broadway musical about the life of famed painter Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Trippie Redd Announces Fall Tour

TRIPPIE REDD ANNOUNCES TRIPP AT KNIGHT HEADLINING NORTH AMERICA TOUR PRESENTED BY ROLLING LOUD, KICKS OFF 8/25 IN MINNEAPOLIS AND WRAPS UP 10/6 IN LOS ANGELES, WITH SUPPORT FROM IANN DIOR AND SOFAYGO

Tickets On Sale Starting Friday, June 18 at 10am Local Time at Trippie Redd’s website

Multi-platinum selling recording artist Trippie Redd announces his upcoming headlining North American tour, Tripp At Knight, produced by Live Nation and presented by Rolling Loud. Joined by fellow 10K Projects artist iann dior, and fast rising Atlanta artist SoFayGo, Trippie’s 25 stop tour will kick off on August 25 at The Armory in Minneapolis, MN and wrap up on October 6 at the Performance Venue at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles. Tickets go on sale this Friday 6/18 at 10am local time at Trippie’s website.

Despite the odds, 2021 has been one of Trippie’s biggest years to date. His latest single Miss The Rage with Playboi Carti debuted at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (the highest chart debut for either artist) and its music video surpassed 1M views in four hours. He also kicked off the year with his first-ever rock album NEON SHARK, produced by close friend and collaborator Travis Barker. NEON SHARK features appearances by Machine Gun Kelly, Chino Moreno (Deftones), blackbear and more, and acts as the deluxe edition of Trippie’s October 2020 album, Pegasus, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Following his biggest year to date, multi-platinum selling rapper and singer iann dior will be opening for Trippie Redd on the tour. With a Billboard #1 for his feature on Mood with 24KGoldn, which spent 10 weeks inside the Top 10 and is 4x Platinum, four RIAA-certified gold singles, and collaborations with everyone from Travis Barker to Lil Baby, iann dior is a genre-agnostic force to be reckoned with in pop music today. The tour arrives shortly after the April release of iann and Trippie’s second single together, shots in the dark, a sequel to their 2019 collab, gone girl, a favorite among fans.

ABOUT TRIPPIE REDD

One of the most versatile and creatively daring artists in hip-hop today, Trippie Redd makes music that’s both wildly experimental and massively appealing. Since delivering his debut mixtape A Love Letter to You in 2017, the multi-platinum-selling, chart-topping rapper, singer and songwriter has continually defied genre boundaries, embedding his melodic take on rap with frenetic elements of rock-and-roll and heavy metal. And with his penetrating lyrics and nuanced but hard-hitting vocal performance, the 21-year-old Ohio native matches that endless ingenuity with a powerfully raw emotional impact.

A self-professed workaholic who’s now debuted five consecutive projects in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 chart —Trippie got his start as a teenager living in a basement with roaches recording music, as he tells it. Born Michael Lamar White IV and raised in Canton, Ohio, he grew up on hip-hop icons like Tupac Shakur, Nas, and Jay-Z, but later became fascinated with the shock-rock of Slipknot and Rob Zombie. As he recalls, the urge to create his own music arose soon after his older brother (an aspiring rapper who went by the name Dirty Redd) died in a car accident when Trippie was 10. (I took his dream and did it myself, Trippie says now.) Drawing much of his inspiration from the free-flowing style and inventive lyricism of Lil Wayne, Trippie began recording in his cousin’s basement and later relocated to Atlanta to further hone his skills, quickly landing a record deal with 10K Projects.

Though 2020 brought its fair share of adjustments, Trippie used his time in quarantine to make some of his boldest career moves yet, including making his acting debut during an episode of Lil Dicky’s critically acclaimed DAVE and headlining Rolling Loud’s Loud Stream. Trippie also dropped his highly anticipated album, Pegasus, on Halloween. The mythical LP, which debuted at #2, included the intoxicating Excitement featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR and highlighted Trippie bridging the generational gap with the legendary Busta Rhymes on I Got You. The deluxe version of Pegasus comes in the form of NEON SHARK: Presented By Travis Barker, released in February.

ABOUT IANN DIOR

Multi-platinum selling, chart topping, iann dior has become one of the industry’s fastest rising new artists. Puerto Rican-born, Corpus Christi-raised Michael Iann Olmo (also known as iann dior) found success with the first song he ever wrote. After uploading to SoundCloud, the song gained 10,000 plays in its first week and caught the ear of Internet Money founder Taz Taylor who invited the budding songwriter to work with him in LA. Shortly afterwards, iann dior inked a deal with Elliot Grainge’s label 10K Projects in April 2019 and released his project Industry Plant.

2020 was a breakout year for the burgeoning star with his feature on the Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit Mood with 24KGoldn, which is now certified 4x platinum and charted inside the Top 10 for 10 weeks. The duo performed the track on the American Music Awards and are currently nominated for 3 Billboard Music Awards and 1 iHeart Radio Music Award for their success with Mood. iann has released songs with acts like Lil Baby, Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker, Clean Bandit, Trippie Redd and more. Known as a highly versatile talent, his work has charted in Alternative, Pop, Rap and Electronic/Dance genres and has earned him the #1 spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.  Most recently he released new tracks shots in the dark ft. Trippie Redd and don’t wanna believe which have already amassed nearly 30 million streams and video views worldwide. As he prepares to release more new music in 2021, iann dior assures his fans this is only the beginning. A number one album is up next… I want to become the number one artist in the world, and I am fully determined and obsessed with being the greatest.

ALAN WALKER × IMANBEK – SWEET DREAMS

In the joining of two then-bedroom producers turned hugely successful DJs and producers, multi-platinum hitmaker Alan Walker and Grammy winner Imanbek release their track “Sweet Dreams,” which includes an infectious sample of Scatman John´sScatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)”. The track is filled to the brim with high energy and intensity and is the perfect way to kick off the summer.

The music video premieres on Alan Walker’s YouTube channel simultaneously, broadcasted to over 39 million subscribers. Shot in Dubai, the “Sweet Dreams” music is heavily influenced by Roman gladiatorial matches, elaborate visual effects and iconic movies set and filmed in the desert.

Watch the video here.

Walker talks about the song and accompanying music video:

“Eurotrance and techno were popular when I was a kid, so it really reminds me of my earliest musical inspirations. We had a blast incorporating the iconic “Scatman” chorus into “Sweet Dreams”, and we’re really happy with how the track turned out.”

Imanbek also weighs in on the exciting collaboration:

“I’m extremely excited to team up with a very talented and cool music head from Norway. Alan Walker is not only a colleague – he’s the originator of his own genre, so it is a real collab of two cultures and genres!”

Tribeca Immersive unveils experience to save orca whales

The Tribeca Immersive event during the 20th Annual Tribeca Festival will see the launch of Critical Distance, a social augmented reality (AR) experience built to engage audiences toward long-term protection of marine wildlife. Harnessing the power of Microsoft HoloLens 2, Critical Distance blends projection and holograms to bring audiences into the world of the Salish Sea, home of the endangered Southern Resident orcas and their struggle for a sustainable future.

Within a custom-built projection environment, audiences of four each wear the latest Microsoft Hololens 2 wearable technology to interact with the Critical Distance characters and narrative. Immersed in the underwater world of Salish Sea audiences connect with J pod, a close-knit family of 24 Southern Resident orcas with a spotlight on Kiki — a six-year-old female who carries the fate of the pod on her shoulders. The groundbreaking storytelling harnesses technology to help us see below the surface in an entirely new way, empowering audiences to “see sound” as they experience Kiki’s world of echolocation and her struggle to compete with human activity. This educational exploration narrated by youth climate justice activist and Co-Executive Director of Zero Hour Jamie Margolin, highlighting scientific efforts focused on Orca preservation, aims to entertain, inform, connect and motivate audiences to take action to support this critical species

Following the launch at the 20th Annual Tribeca Festival, Critical Distance will continue on to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History for a nine-month installation. Audiences are invited to experience Critical Distance between June 9-20, with tickets and advanced booking available at Tribeca.

Purdue Innovation Could Make Recycling More Profitable

By: Steve Martin

Hasler Ventures LLC plans to scale up to commercial levels a Purdue University patented technology that may accelerate the volume of waste plastic recycling.

The innovation is called Low-Pressure Hydrothermal Processing. It promises an economically and environmentally safe way to transform polyolefin plastic, the most common form of plastic, into gasoline, diesel fuel and other high-value items. Developed by Linda Wang, the Maxine Spencer Nichols Professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, the research was published in a 2021 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Fuel.

The United Nations estimates that more than 8 million tons of plastics flow into the oceans each year. Of all the plastics produced over the past 65 years (8.3 billion tons), about 12% have been incinerated and only 9% have been recycled. The remaining 79% have gone into landfills or the oceans. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050, the oceans will hold more plastic waste than fish if the waste continues to be dumped into bodies of water.

“The key to solving this problem is to make it economically more attractive to collect and process the plastic waste stream into higher-value products at a significantly lower conversion cost,” said Dan Hasler, CEO of Hasler Ventures. “Current methods including incineration, pyrolysis and mechanical recycling have all proven to be ineffective or too costly, both financially and environmentally. They have not been able to draw the required private investment at a scale sufficient to divert the vast majority of the global 350 million tons of plastic waste produced annually from the landfill. We believe we can demonstrate first at pilot scale that hydrothermal processing is a less-expensive approach to produce fuels from plastic than from crude oil, making it a profitable venture to collect and process plastic, keeping it out of landfills and oceans.”

Purdue has put significant effort in this area for many years, said Mung Chiang, Purdue’s executive vice president for strategic initiatives and the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering. “Solving this plastic waste problem will greatly benefit the environment and future generations,” Chiang said.

The recently invented conversion process incorporates hydrothermal liquefaction and efficient separation. Once the plastic is converted into oil or naphtha, it can be used as a feedstock for other chemicals or further separated into monomers, specialty solvents, or other products. The clean fuels derived from the polyolefin waste generated each year can satisfy 4% of the annual demand for gasoline or diesel fuels. Some results of Wang’s study were published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering in 2019 and Fuel in 2020 and 2021. A video about the process is available online.

Hasler Ventures is collaborating with American Resources Corp. (NASDAQ:AREC) to use its Indiana-based chromatography pilot plant, currently in development, to demonstrate the technology.

Mark Jensen, president of American Resources Corp., said, “Once proven, the commercialized Purdue innovation could change perceptions about recycling plastics. We’re excited to support this environmentally critical project.”

K.D.A.P. – Influences

You may know Kevin Drew as the leader of Toronto indie-rock ensemble Broken Social Scene but let’s imagine that he wasn’t. Instead, let’s imagine that the young man who spent his early 20s obsessing over Brian Eno’s ambient works, Morricone soundtracks, Chicago post-rock and the early Warp Records catalogue never left the basement, never met his future BSS partner Brendan Canning in 1999 and never discovered a wider community of musicians. Now take that kid, time-travel him to 2021, hand him a smartphone with a DIY beat-making app, and drop him in a forest somewhere in the south of England. The result would sound something like Influences.

The album is different from his previous works in that it’s more of an abstract electronic music album. Kevin shared the video for the album’s opening track, “The Slinfold Loop”. On the track he says: “We live in a society that’s based on selling yourself back to yourself. It’s created an underground battle to constantly be searching for ‘true identity’. We wanted to create a video presentation that promotes exploring over searching and brings the mystical slide-show of never-ending opinion to the forefront of this battle. We used available footage from the World Wide Web from other artists and cut together a blender of images to tell a love story about continuing to move forward amongst the never ending information of how one is supposed to live.”

Yes, like many records you’ll hear this year, Influences was a product of the pandemic. But it doesn’t so much capture the sound of lockdown as it does liberation, music unbound from the laws of traditional song structure and the crowd-pleasing pressures of fronting a popular rock band. The truth is, Kevin had been itching to make a record like this well before the world stopped turning in March 2020. After his two decades of playing with Broken Social Scene left him with a chronic back injury and a dearth of fresh songwriting inspiration, he longed for both a physical and aesthetic retreat, and to reconnect with the therapeutic powers of instrumental music that he first experienced as a teenager. The pandemic simply provided him with the time and space to finally make it happen, as he spent the summer of 2020 riding out COVID’s first wave in the London area.

But while the aptly-named Influences marks a return to the early inspirations that first prompted Kevin to make music some 25 years ago, it expresses those old impulses through an entirely new language, and exercises them in a completely different environment. This isn’t a basement record; it’s an outdoor record, written in real time during long walks through the woods of Slinford and along the canals of Islington on the smartphone production software Endlesss. For Kevin, this app wasn’t some mere time-killing toy, but a tool that completely transformed his approach to making music, its simple interface presenting him with infinite new possibilities and reigniting a childlike sense of experimentation. Instead of jamming with musicians, he was now interacting with his natural environment, intuitively switching up his beats and arrangements in response to changes in environmental stimuli, be it the discovery of a new vista or a cyclist whipping by and nearly killing him. The easy-flowing, artistically freeing nature of the music’s creation is reflected in the alias Kevin eventually adopted for the project KDAP, a.k.a., Kevin Drew a Picture and by the time he returned to Toronto following his UK retreat, he had accumulated nearly 45 song sketches.

Influences is positively pulsating with life, a kaleidoscopic constellation of strobe-lit electronics, rippling rhythms, and gleaming digital melodies that tap into a very 2021 feeling of existence.
