US Mass Shooting: Gun Violence in 2021

New York City police released a video on Friday showing two children getting caught in a shooting. The 5-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister were rushing toward a bodega’s entrance for shelter when they heard gunshots, but they collide with another man who is also racing for cover, and all three of them tumble to the pavement.

While the children are laying between the shooter’s obvious target, the gunman continues firing at close range. Police said the shooter opened fire around 6:45pm ET Thursday in front of 1551 Sheridan Ave. The target fell on top and around the kids as he struggled to escape the gunfire.

NYPD shared in a tweet that both children were “very unfortunately not injured. However, this episode is a vivid example of how gun violence in America has been and is a major crime issue. Just a few days after the Bronx shooting mentioned, there were 10 overnight shootings on Monday, 21 June.

Countless shootings have resulted in the loss of many lives. On June 14, the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) reported 272 mass shootings in 2021. Today, just one week after, the number is now reported at 297. This week’s shootings include incidents in New York City, Missouri, California, Florida, and Chicago.

As states begin to lift restrictions on social gatherings, shootings are happening more often. Over the course of the Covid pandemic, the federal government tracked gun sales exceeding a million per week – this benchmark has not been hit since gun tracking started in 1998. According to the GVA, the number of mass shootings has increased about 40% compared to 2020 (194 cases), and 65% from 2019 (164 cases).

America’s culture of guns has now become a culture of killing. Gun violence takes innocent lives and traumatizes the communities every day.

In April, after the devastating shooting in Atlanta – taking the lives of eight individuals – President Joe Biden has announced six initial actions to address to gun violence crimes. But truly effective change is possible only through federal legislation. Biden can expand background checks and band rifles, but Congress must step up in tightening gun laws for change to be effective.

Yoel Razvozov Named Israel's Minister of Tourism from Alexandra Seibt for use by 360 Magazine

YOEL RAZVOZOV NAMED ISRAEL’S MINISTER OF TOURISM

The Israel Ministry of Tourism is pleased to share the news of the appointment of its new Minister, Yoel Razvozov, Israeli politician and former judoka Olympian. As Minister of Tourism, Razvozov will work closely with the new government to create and execute a plan to bring both domestic and international tourism back in Israel following more than a year of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re encouraged with the appointment of Yoel Razvozov and are looking forward to working with him to bring North American tourists back to Israel,” said Eyal Carlin, Israel Ministry of Tourism Commissioner for North America. “With new flight routes from the U.S. to Israel launched—even during the pandemic—our initial reopening pilot program having great success and now the new Minister and the new government’s announcement of the expanded reopening to international travelers beginning on July 1, I feel very encouraged and believe that tourism to Israel will be back to pre-pandemic highs before long.”

Razvozov, who first entered the Knesset in 2013, has served as Chairperson of the Sports Lobby of the Knesset and Chairperson of the Generation and a Half Lobby since 2015. In the 19th Knesset (2013-2015), Razvozov was appointed Chairperson of the Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs.

“My first task as Minister of Tourism is to build a correct and effective outline for the easing of conditions for tourists to enter Israel—of course, without endangering the citizens of Israel and in cooperation with the professional bodies in the Ministry of Health,” said Razvozov.

Prior to entering politics, Razvozov served as Chairman and Director of the Israel Olympic Committee (2008-2013) and held the sports portfolio in the Netanya City Council. Razvozov is a former judoka Olympian, and at the age of 16, was named an Israeli champion, holding the title for 10 consecutive years. He served as captain of Israel’s national Judo team, winning two silver medals in the European championship and representing Israel in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

About the Israel Ministry of Tourism:

The Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT), is Israel’s national tourism agency responsible for planning and implementing marketing and promotional initiatives to position Israel as a preferred travel destination. Reebok × Power Rangers

Today Reebok unveils its first Reebok x Power Rangers collection in partnership with Hasbro. Inspired by the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series of the 90s, this full-family footwear collection pairs iconic Reebok silhouettes with five of the original Power Rangers in both performance and lifestyle silhouettes.

The characters featured in this collection include the Red Ranger, Black Ranger, Blue Ranger, Pink Ranger, Yellow Ranger and Megazord. Each of the key footwear models that represent the Power Rangers incorporate elements connecting the shoe to its corresponding Power Ranger and their Zord.

Highlights of the Reebok x Power Rangers line include:

  • Zig Kinetica II Red Ranger ($140) – The Red Ranger’s impressive athleticism and powerful personality pairs perfectly with Reebok’s all-new Zig Kinetica II. The Zig Kinetica II Red Ranger also features a jagged toe box to represent the Tyrannosaurus Zord’s teeth with silver Zord accents along the midsole. Also available in Zig Dynamica for grade school and preschool.
  • Nano X1 Black Ranger ($150) – This version of Reebok’s most versatile training shoe yet, the Nano X1, was inspired by the Black Ranger’s sleek look, agility and speed. The Nano X1 Black Ranger allows you to perform a wide range of physical activities in style. The shoe even features a heel tab design that references the Black Ranger’s signature 90s fashion sense. Available in adult sizing.
  • Club C Legacy Blue Ranger ($120) – Rather than being at the forefront of every fight, the Blue Ranger’s power comes from within. This Club C Legacy pays homage to the Blue Power Ranger’s work through the translucent sole, which shows an important aspect of the shoe that is often shrouded by the outsole. The sneaker also includes a white collar and heel blocking to resemble the design of the Triceratops Zord’s crown. Available in adult, grade school and preschool sizing.
  • Freestyle Hi Pink Ranger ($120) – Reebok’s Freestyle Hi, the first workout shoe made exclusively for women, is the perfect silhouette to represent the Pink Ranger, known for promoting individual empowerment and investing in others by teaching aerobics at her community center. The shoe also incorporates pink stripes down the front of the upper that make reference to the Pterodactyl Zord, as well as a green broken heart on the inside strap that alludes to the Pink Ranger’s relationship with the Green Ranger. Available in women’s, grade school and preschool sizing.
  • Club C Yellow Ranger ($100) – The Club C, a silhouette known for its’ adaptability from the skate park to the tennis court, matches the Yellow Power Ranger’s signature versatility. In addition to Zord markings, the Club C Yellow Ranger features a wing logo on the back of the tongue as a tribute to Yellow Ranger actress Thuy Trang. Available in adult sizing.
  • Question Mid Megazord ($180) – The Question Mid Megazord features a range of markings to represent the Zord, from the black and yellow logo on the tongue that resembles Zord eyes to the V-printed eyelets that emulate Zord teeth. The shoe also includes a question mark on the right toe with an M for Megazord.

Beyond unique details that relate to each character, each style incorporates a Power Coin, the Power Rangers bolt and materials inspired by the metallic Zords.

All six adult models will be packaged in shoeboxes designed to resemble different elements of the Megazord. Once assembled, these six boxes combined will create a limited edition Megazord figure akin to the television show model.

The Question Mid Megazord will be available exclusively on Reebok’s website beginning June 29, 2021 at 10am EST. All remaining models in the Reebok x Power Rangers collection will be available at both  Reebok’s website and various additional retailers on June 29, 2021 at 10am EST.

Currently, Power Rangers is celebrating 28 continuous years on the air, making it one of the longest- running kids’ live-action series in television history, with nearly 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise celebrates its 28th season, “Power Rangers Dino Fury,” currently airing on Saturdays at 8 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon in the U.S.

JOAN ARMATRADING – CONSEQUENCES

JOAN ARMATRADING RELEASES HIGHLY ACCLAIMED 22ND STUDIO ALBUM CONSEQUENCES

“Juxtaposing layers of crisp riffs and rhythms while wielding a voice that can dive into a hearty contralto or leap upward to radiate fragility and tenderness” – The New York Times

“Consequences finds her at the peak of her game” – Rolling Stone

“Uncompromising artistic vision” – Yahoo!

“Joan Armatrading has maintained her introspective songwriting and moving vocals while navigating through a variety of genres.” – The Wall Street Journal

“Joan Armatrading will render interior mysteries with such forthright clarity, attuned so sensitively to the rhythms of feeling, that she makes the most terrible depths of heartbreak seem, to start, bearable. And then she’ll make you smile.” – Pitchfork

Consequences offers no shortage of rhythm-ready offerings, which ensure the enthusiasm remains at a constant peak.” – American Songwriter

Joan Armatradinghas released her new album Consequences via BMG, one of her most intimate and direct albums yet and one that wears its conscience and its heart on its sleeve. “I feel as excited about this album as I did when Love And Affection came out. Butterflies!”, says Armatrading.

Consequences ably illustrates the fact that Joan Armatrading never likes to repeat herself. Her 22nd studio album is a very different follow up to 2018’s UK’s Top 30 hit album Not Too Far Away.

Of course the change of musical pace will come as no surprise to Joan‘s many legions of world-wide fans since she has always been a pioneer in what she does – ever since the release of her first album in 1972 when her then record company, by their own admission, had little idea of how to present her, being so outside the norm. It should also be remembered that Joan Armatrading was the very first female singer/songwriter from the UK to have international success with the songs she wrote and performed.

Whether she’s playing a blinding electric guitar solo that would put many of the recognized ‘Guitar Heroes’ in the shade or focusing on specific genres like jazz or blues, Joan has always gone where the muse takes her with no predictability attached.  Repetition isn’t in her lexicon, even when composing the music for The Tempest and as demonstrated on the recently screened documentary about her career, ‘Me, Myself, I.’ With her heartfelt, direct, and melodic trademark vocal style and lyrics that tell it exactly how it is and a strong rhythmic flow throughout, Consequences is an album of some surprises for sure but couched in a passionate intensity that benefits from listening to it straight through from start to finish. A complete aural experience and an uncompromising tour de force that engages and gets better with every listen.  And while the subject matter, love in its many guises, is an intrinsically intimate topic this is not an album about Joan herself but rather, as with all her work, one written from observation and where she has created songs that people can make their own, applying the lyrics to whatever their own circumstances might be.

The current single, Already There, is a perfect example of this as it details the common experience of when one person in a couple is already in love while the other still hasn’t quite arrived yet emotionally.

On July 31st  2021, Joan Armatrading does something she has never done before – she streams a specially performed live concert to her fans across the world.

Tom Odell monsters image provided by Sarah Weinstein Dennison and RCA Records for use by 360 MAGAZINE.

Tom Odell × monsters

Brit and Ivor Novello award winning songwriter, plus platinum-selling, chart-topping artist Tom Odell has released an acoustic version of his latest single “lose you again” from his forthcoming studio album monsters out July 9 via Sony Music U.K/RCA Records

After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 20119, Odell wrote his way through it, eventually letting down his guard and pouring his feelings into new music for his forthcoming fourth studio album monsters.

The new single from the new album is “lose you again,” a fragile, heart-breaking piano ballad balanced subtly within a contemporary production. The song is about a fractured relationship and challenges the taboo of men showing their feelings.   In the official video, Tom does an emotional performance set in an empty Wembley Stadium…a powerful metaphor for the song and our times.   Tom says “It was an absolute dream to shoot a music video at Wembley. When we asked, I was not expecting them to say yes, but they did!

Odell has been working as a musician in the public eye since he was 21 when his self- penned debut album Long Way Down, earned him a UK number one album, top 10 single (the epic “Another Love” which propelled him to global notice) as well as a Brit Award. A masterful performer, Tom has appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Graham Norton Show, Late Late Show with James Corden, Late Night with Seth Meyersand so many more.   Tom Odell has enjoyed over 2.6 billion streams, three UK top 5 albums including the platinum-selling, chart-topping Long Way Down; two UK top 10 singles, a 2013 Brit Award for Critic’s Choice and was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello award for Songwriter of the Year.

Now, 30, it’s clear to Tom that the whirlwind around his debut kick started a work ethic that eventually became an obsession.  It reached an apex in September 2019 when Odell, fresh off touring his album Jubilee Road, left his home in London and went straight to LA to start writing the next album.  “Then this chronic anxiety that I’d had for a couple of years just got worse.” Odell woke up one morning “and I couldn’t do any more music.” He knew something had to change.  In the end he flew back home, went straight to his parent’s house and slowly got better.

Odell turned that challenging experience into this new album.  He also realized  his broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the album – created alongside songwriter Laurie Blundell and producer Miles James – leaning into a more electronic, bedroom pop sound that Odell has steadily become obsessed with over the last few years. This newfound love of DIY electronic pop chimed with the pandemic’s arrival and Odell crafted songs in a more threadbare way with instruments he had at hand, like Moog synths. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore. Eerie synths and head-rattling beats augment the sound.  While his new music is at times weighty, there is a lightness of touch that means Odell is able to pull off pop’s greatest trick of hiding sadness in the melodies.   In this strangest of times, this new music represents the start of chapter two in Odell’s ongoing musical journey.

As a testament to his enduring popularity, Tom Odell performed on BBC1 Graham Norton TV show (watch here) to launch his new album  and more recently he appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden with another intimate performance of first track “numb.”  At the same time, Odell’s fan base continues to grow exponentially with his new sound and direction. He has gained over 4 million new monthly listeners since the start of the year, with ⅔ of his audience under 25. Despite joining TikTok relatively recently, his heavily engaged videos have been viewed over 15 million times and his debut singleAnother Love has had a resurgence in popularity with a new generation – it has become a viral hit and re-entered the UK official singles charts and Spotify Global Chart.

Tom Odell recently announced live dates for his UK 2022 “the monsters tour.” Tickets are available at www.gigsandtours.com, www.ticketmaster.co.uk and www.axs.com.

Jack, Larger Than Life

On view June 26 – September 5, 2021 in the LongHouse Pavilion, Jack, Larger Than Life, is an intimate portrait of creator-collector Jack Lenor Larsen (1927–2020). His innovative textiles are presented side by side with his various “enthusiasms,” the objects of craft and art he assiduously gathered, as well as the clothing he collected and wore.  Over 100 objects from the several thousand in LongHouse Reserve’s collection are juxtaposed with Jack’s pronouncements and videotapes of his interviews.

My acquisitions seemed to reinforce my own personal identity…

In collecting I found a quiet means of sharing enthusiasms

—Jack Lenor Larsen

In a period of increasing automation, Jack Lenor Larsen reintroduced handweaving techniques to the textile industry.  Established in the 1950’s, his eponymous brand presented a series of innovations, making Larsen one of the most prolific and respected American designers of his time. A proponent of craft before it was trendy, Larsen’s appetite for the handmade took him across the globe seeking both traditional techniques and modern interpretations. Jack had an insatiable hunger and curiosity for other cultures. Said Kate Irwin, Curator of Costume and Textiles at the RISD Museum, “From the beginning of his career to his last collection for Cowtan & Tout in 2019, Jack’s approach to textile design was innovative and technical, while steeped in hand-craftsmanship and global practices of making. Many of his early designs combined natural fibers with synthetic materials of varying textures, transforming age-old textile techniques into contemporary designs that softened the transparent glass and dense steel of modernist International Style buildings.”

Don’t be reverent. Be relevant. Keep on changing.

—Jack Lenor Larsen

Nearly fifty iconic Larsen textile lengths fill the gallery with color, texture, and pattern, including major commissions such as Leverlin for Lever House, New York’s first International Style high rise; Swazi Drapery for the Wolf Trap Theater; and Magnum, with light-reflecting mirror Mylar, for the Phoenix Opera House.

Organized according to the color stories Jack favored in his textile designs, exhibition groupings weave together a spectrum of Larsen textiles with garments from Jack’s wardrobe, furniture and art from his home, and sculptural objects from around the globe. Atop an angular Wharton Esherick table sits a Dale Chihuly silvered glass cylinder. The table was Jack’s first important purchase and started his extensive Esherick collection (the largest outside the artist’s own house museum). The Chihuly was the last of several gifts from the artist to his friend and mentor on the occasion of a milestone birthday. A graphic Japanese kimono rubs elbows with a Marc Leuthold-carved ceramic and Stephen Proctor mid-century table; metalwork vessels by Chunghi Choomingle with a Japanese indigo patched boro and West African resist-dyed textiles; Dawn MacNutt’s fiber sculpture keeps watch over a Sheila Hicks miniature and Toradja armor made of horn (a gift to LongHouse from playwright Edward Albee). As backdrop to these groupings, an entire wall is covered in a sensuous array of Larsen’s printed cotton velvets.

LongHouse provided a home and a stage on which Jack shared various passions. Honoring Jack’s generous, generative spirit, this exhibition is an invitation to “open eyes to alternatives.”

Perceiving lies in comprehending the whole, the essence of an object,

not just its outline or another superficial aspect.

—Jack Lenor Larsen

Jack, Larger than Life is curated by Wendy van Deusen and Sherri Donghia; Kate Irwin, Exhibition Writer, and additional support from Caroline Bauman, Alexandra Munroe, and Lee Skolnick.

The exhibition is designed by Lee Skolnick, and his firm, SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership.  Design team members included Jo Ann Secor, Director of Interpretive Services, Scott Briggs, Associate Principal and Project Manager, Katie Ahern, Senior Manager, Content and Visitor Experience Design, and Vonn Weisenberger, Exhibit Designer.

This exhibition was made possible in part by the generous support of Cowtan & Tout / Larsen, Amita Chatterjee, and Nina Gilman.  Public Programs are funded in part by Suffolk County and LongHouse Reserve Members and Supporters.

This hour long illustrated presentation begins by examining what it was like to be queer in 1950s and 1960s America, an America where anyone who was at all different was demonized, medicated or arrested. It continues with Philadelphia’s response to this relentless oppression – the annual Reminder demonstrations that occurred every 4th of July from 1965 to 1969 in front of Independence Hall, the first organized, regularly recurring protests for gay rights in the country. Finally, it tells how the Stonewall riots changed that paradigm for good, morphing those Annual Reminders into and Gay Pride marches and giving birth to the modern LGBTQ movement.”

Town & Country’s 8th Philanthropy Summit – Pharrell Williams × José Andrés

The 8th annual Town & Country Philanthropy Summit kicked off today with an amazing conversation between Pharrell Williams and José Andrés, moderated by Soledad O’Brien.

See below for highlights from the panel as well as a link to view the interview in its entirety:

Pharrell Williams on how he thinks about philanthropy and what his goals are:

“When we think about the African diaspora and people of color and what people who are deemed ‘minorities’ – which we are actually not—but that’s just the saying. There are three pillars that affect us the most—disproportionate access to education, disproportionate access to healthcare, and also disproportionate access to legislation. I think the first two are the ones that I want to focus on because they’re the ones that I feel like I can, through my resources and even my likenesses whenever needed, that I can actually make a difference in education and healthcare. These are the things that hurt us the most.”

José Andrés on why he focuses on food insecurity:

“I am one more cook in the universe of people that feed people in America or around the world. But people like me, we only feed the few. I am in the power, when you began thinking, we can also be a part of feeding the many. And where we can join forces to the many around America, and around many places in the world, in the most difficult moments, to be able to bring solutions. For me, food is my way of doing it, but what we do is only a drop of water in an ocean of empathy. It requires a lot of props of empathy to make things happen. Obviously what I do is more focused on emergencies, I don’t like to see people in mayhem; people who, already in the good times forgotten, that are voiceless, that nobody takes care of. It’s even worse when a hurricane, an earthquake, an explosion of fire, a pandemic, hits their communities even further. That’s the moment that I feel the urgency of now being yesterday, and I love to bring my community and try to be nice to as many people as we can in these moments of mayhem. At the end of the day, one plate of food at a time won’t solve every problem but at least you buy time. And you give hope to people who need it the most.”

Pharrell on how he and Jose met and joined forces:

“Catherine Kimmel – the great connector – took me to an event. Here’s a guy that you really need to meet because, like you, he takes what it is he does and puts it to better usage and thinks about others… [at an event in New York] I was so impressed because there were so many chefs there but this guy – it was different. Yes, he’s a chef and he’s all about his ingredients and recipes, but his greatest meal was his operation and people and his ability to galvanize. It was really apparent that everyone was centered around him and all he wanted to do was feed people and bring people together and help people see that through our differences and our challenges are actually a lot of solutions and we can make the world a better place and I was really blown away… Then we met and we realized there were a lot of things he was doing that I could be instrumental in helping him.”

José on meeting Pharrell and what attracted him to Pharrell:

“I go and meet Pharrell and he’s even better, he’s the better half. What you get is a good vibe – it’s very difficult to describe. You know, you read about people, NBA players, amazing musicians and I’m not only looking for the amazing things they do, which I love, but what’s behind. When you see that behind is something very powerful that they’re putting at the service of others – their power, their money, their contacts but something even more powerful is their brain connecting with their empathy within their hearts… We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without people like them. Pharrell knows and more importantly loves his community. We were able to do it in Virginia Beach and be there because Pharrell opened to us the doors of being that community without being foreigners. We were able to partner with local people, with local restaurants.”

José on how his family impacted his values and his metaphor on life:

“My mom and dad always believed in longer tables, not higher ones. The table will always be ready for whoever showed up… My father would put me in charge of making the fire. I did that since I was young, and I would become very good at making the fire. But my father was very particular, and he would never let me near the chicken… [he would say] ‘My son I know you wanted to do the cooking, but actually doing the fire and controlling the fire is the most important thing, everyone wants to do the cooking without understand the fire. My son you already have the biggest gift. Control the fire, master the fire, and then you can do any cooking you want.’ (I don’t know if my father told me that story with that idea or I’m making it more romantic along the way as the years pass by). My father was giving me a mantra for life itself: find your fire, control your fire, master your fire, and then you can do any cooking you want in your life.”

Pharrell on his foundation YELLOW:

“For us, we want to even the odds. I know that I was a very lucky person who benefitted from my teachers seeing something in me. They didn’t know what they were telling me or which way the way to go but they kept telling me to keep going. I think that had a profound effect on me because essentially education is the toolbox that every human being is going to need out in the world just to function… What we wanted to do is look at a curriculum that could assess these children and figure out how they comprehend information best. Then eventually make a curriculum that is sensory based and not sensory biased. If you learn differently than how the curriculum is being taught, then automatically you’re deemed as remedial… with the YELLOW hub, it’s the space where kids can learn based on their way they process their information.”

Pharrell on the education system:

“I love public school teachers and you know, love the unions as well, but the education the educational system is antiquated. I mean just ask your favorite Fortune 500 CEO – they might not be the best, they might not be well read, but that does not stop their genius. And this is what we want. We want to make sure that we reach every child by properly assessing their learning potential and comprehension preferences, and making sure that they have a curriculum that is based for them. Sensory bias is an issue, but sensory based learning special educational systems is the future. That’s how every child slip through the cracks and we get to eventually even the odds.”

José on how the pandemic affected and influenced his philanthropy:

“I think this year has changed all of us profoundly… Fundamentally has changed me. First, obviously take care of your family. I tried to be a father who took care of his daughters and my wife and trying to keep them safe. Every mother and father tried to do that. But then I began thinking that to take care of my daughters, it’s not putting them behind walls, to take care of my daughters, is bringing down those walls and trying to work as hard to provide for the other daughters and sons of other people I don’t know that they are trying to achieve the same for their children. The way I’m going to keep my daughters safer is not behind walls but with longer tables, where I work as hard to provide for my daughters as I’m going to work to provide for the daughters I don’t know. Fundamentally this is what changed me.”

José on what people get wrong about philanthropy:

“Robert Egger, my favorite food fighter, he said that it seems philanthropy is usually about the redemption of the giver, when philanthropy essentially needs to be about the liberation of the receiver. It’s nothing wrong to give and donate time or money or your brain and feel good about it, but fundamentally in this pandemic, I learned that to give, it’s not good enough, that we must do good, yes, but we must do smart good.”

Pharrell on the changes he has noticed this year:

“Empathy is at an all-time low. It’s not where it needs to be. There’s a lot of sympathy and pity, but there’s not empathy. And we need more of that, we need more empathy, we need more humility, we need more gratitude. I think the pandemic, for me, has taken me to that place where that’s the only thing I can think about.”
