New album monsters to be released June 25th Via Sony Music U.K./RCA Records

Pre-Save/Pre-Order album

Brit Award and Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter, plus platinum-selling, chart-topping artist Tom Odell today releases his new single “monster v.2” via Sony Music UK/RCA Records. Listen/Watch monsters v.2.”

Odell’s fourth studio album, monsters, will be released June 25th.  Pre-order HERE and find track listing below.

After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 2019, Odell wrote his way through it, eventually letting down his guard and pouring his feelings into new music that became his brand new album monsters. The album feels like both a daring creative rebirth and a solidifying of Odell’s strengths.

Last week, Tom released a stripped down version of the song and video titled “monster v.1.” CLASH described it “rustic and intimate…A song developed out of distaste, anxiety and personal responsibility, ‘monster v.1’ is a plea to better oneself despite pain. The video is starkly personal and filmed by Odell himself at home. Presented as personal diary tapes, “monster v.1” feels like watching someone’s most confidential moments of mental turbulence.”  Watch the video/listen HERETom debuted “monster” with a stripped down performance on The Graham Norton Show – Watch Here.

Last month, Odell premiered the album’s first single “numb”  via BBC Radio 1 “Hottest Record In The World” with an accompanying video filmed in Tom’s home in England and directed by Tom Odell & Joseph Delaney. Watch it HERE.

“monster v.2” is the perfect companion track to follow “numb”–with the confrontational chorus (“you’re just a monster and I’m not scared”), lyrics initially inspired by Trump, and more specifically climate change activist Greta Thunberg’s staring down the former U.S. president at the UN Climate Summit in 2019. The song’s meaning soon morphed into something more abstract. The song became a self-help mantra for Odell’s ongoing battle with anxiety.  Tom also releases a video today for which Tom’s fans sent in clips of what the word ‘monster’ meant to them.

Watch “monster v.2” here

Tom explains:  “in 2019, my anxiety got so bad that I had to stop making music for a while. There was a period when it felt like I couldn’t leave the house without having a panic attack. I wrote this song, ‘monster’ about trying to overcome my struggles with those mental health problems. The more I’ve begun to speak about this subject, the more I’ve realized so many people are going through the same thing. I asked my fans to show me what the word ‘monster’ meant to them, and I thought I was just gonna make a 30 second video for Instagram or something, but the first time we put all the clips together I cried. It was so moving to see people being so vulnerable, so I scrapped the whole other music video I had made for the song and ended up going with this as the main music video, as it was so good.  I think it’s one of the most powerful videos I’ve ever been involved with.”

Odell has been working as a musician in the public eye since he was 21 when his self- penned debut album Long Way Down, earned him a UK number one album, top 10 single (the epic “Another Love” which propelled him to global notice) as well as the coveted Brit Award. A masterful performer, Tom has appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonThe Graham Norton Show, Late Late Show with James CordenLate Night with Seth Meyers and so many more.

Now, 30, it’s clear to Tom that the whirlwind around his debut kick started a work ethic that eventually became an obsession.  It reached an apex in September 2019 when Odell, fresh off touring his album Jubilee Road, left his home in London and went straight to LA to start writing the next album.  “Then this chronic anxiety that I’d had for a couple of years just got worse.” Odell woke up one morning “and I couldn’t do any more music.” He knew something had to change.  In the end he flew back home, went straight to his parent’s house and slowly got better.

Odell turned that challenging experience into this new album.  He also realized  his broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the album–created alongside songwriter Laurie Blundell and producer Miles James–leaning into a more electronic, bedroom pop sound that Odell has steadily become obsessed with over the last few years. This newfound love of DIY electronic pop chimed with the pandemic’s arrival and Odell crafted songs in a more threadbare way with instruments he had at hand, like Moog synths. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore. Eerie synths and head-rattling beats augment the sound.  While his new music is at times weighty, there is a lightness of touch that means Odell is able to pull off pop’s greatest trick of hiding sadness in the melodies. In this strangest of times, this new music represents the start of chapter two in Odell’s ongoing musical journey.

Tom Odell has enjoyed over 2.6 billion streams, three UK top 5 albums including the platinum-selling, chart-topping Long Way Down; two UK top 10 singles, a 2013

Brit Award for Critic’s Choice and was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello award for Songwriter of the Year.

Tom Odell recently announced live dates for his UK 2022 “the monsters tour.” Tickets are available at Gigs and Tours, Ticketmaster and AXS. *Fans pre-ordering the album (vinyl, cd, cassette and more) on Tom’s official website will guarantee first access to tickets.

half•alive – WHAT’S WRONG

SONG & VIDEO OUT NOW

Long Beach based trio half•alive return to release their new single “What’s Wrong” along with a tuxedoed, dance-heavy new music video via RCA Records. Watch HERE. “What’s Wrong” was written by half•alive and Ojivolta and produced by Ojivolta (Halsey, Shawn Mendes, Jon Bellion). The music video was conceptualized and produced by lead singer Josh Taylor, directed by Brantley Gutierrez, and choreographed by and features frequent, much-beloved half•alive collaborators JA Collective.

Says Josh, “There is a really funny story with how the hook of the chorus “Time’s always right to fix What’s Wrong” came to be. It randomly enough was actually a misquote from a conversation between Olivia Wilde & one of our creative directors Jordan, from JA Collective, who also happens to be my roommate. Olivia & JA were working together on a project a few months back & at one point Jordan noted how absurdly difficult it is to find choreographers on IMDB, but also noted that was a pretty minor problem considering the myriad of problems 2020 had brought to light. Olivia replied “the time is always right to do what’s right,”  which Jordan misquoted to me later that evening, forming the line “Time’s always right to fix what’s wrong”.  That line felt like the open door to address the social climate we’ve all been surrounded by for nearly a year now & prompted the idea of transformation of one’s immediate & eventually global environment by looking inward first, to look in the mirror & realize that is where the change is going to begin.

Creating the music video took the transformative theme of the song a step further by exploring one small crummy apartment seen in two radically different ways. Naturally we uniformed ourselves in tuxedos to stress the polarity even more. Trying to execute a video shoot in covid is incredibly challenging, but we didn’t realize how much covid was subtly influencing the story of the music video until we started location scouting. We felt strongly that there was something really special about filming it in a confined space, especially with that being the environment so many people have found themselves stuck in during quarantine–but transforming it into more. 2020 was a life changing year for many, for us it was a big break, being home and off the road all year, we were thankful for a breath to think, reflect & process, as many have had this year. A lot of what we reflected on was how now more than ever, there is a desperate need for hope & love & honesty and change. So at this point we can only trust that we’ve made something honest & hope those who hear “What’s Wrong” will feel loved & begin to hope in something truly transformative.”

About half•alive

The music of half•alive breathes, evolves, grows, and changes alongside the lives of the Long Beach trio Josh Taylor [vocals], Brett Kramer [drums], and J Tyler Johnson [bass]. half•alive officially came to life on the 2017 3 EP, which sparked a palpable buzz on the strength of “The Fall” and “Aawake At Night”. Over the course of the next year, they crafted what became their massive breakout “still feel.” which has been RIAA certified Gold, rocketed into the Top 10 at Alt Radio and has over 276 million worldwide streams to date. The video organically surpassed the 10 million mark within two months as the song garnered acclaim from NPR’s coveted “All Songs Considered” and more. The trio sold out their formal debut headlining tour in 2019  which included 2 sold out shows at The Fonda Theatre in LA. The tour also included stops at major music festivals including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and Bumbershoot. Later that year the band made their late night television debut with a very special performance of “still feel.” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Check out the incredible and unique performance HERE. They also performed “Runaway” on The Late Late Show with James Corden. In August 2019, they released their debut album Now, Not Yet which has amassed over 472 million worldwide audio streams to date. half•alive was named YouTube’s Artist on the Rise and their live Vevo DSCVR performances of “RUNAWAY” and “arrow” showcase their incredible creative artistry. Last year, half•alive released their EP “in Florescence,” an audio and visual project that included orchestral arrangements of 4 tracks off their critically acclaimed debut album Now, Not Yet, as well as videos for 3 of the 4 songs to accompany them.

Tutors Not Just for Kids

Tutors Are Not Just for Kids: They Help People Get Through College, Too!

Tutoring community, The Oxford Method, offers up tips to help people get through college

Many people tend to think of tutoring as being something for kids. Yet there are millions of college students who struggle and need help, too. In fact, according to EducationData.org, around 40% of undergraduate college students drop out before earning a degree. The website also reports that 30% of freshmen don’t make it to their second year of college. One of the main reasons that people drop out of college is that they struggle to keep up academically, followed by the stress, financial situations, and lack of campus connections. The good news is that there are things that can be done to help address the issues and keep on going.

“Millions of people dream of earning a degree, but when they begin struggling, they tend to leave,” explains David Florence, professor and founder of The Oxford Method, a community that offers tutoring services around the country. “The help is readily available, but many people are not aware of it. We want to change that, so we can help more people see their goals through.”

The Oxford Method is on a mission to share with the world that education is the great equalizer and an essential gift to the next generation. Its goal is to help more people stick with finishing their academic goals. Here are some tips it offers to college students to help them get through:

  • Stay organized. One of the most important things you can do is to organize your schedule. This way you won’t fall behind or feel as much stress. Use a good planner, plan ahead, make lists, set goals, and do things that will help keep you on the right path.
  • Become involved. Rather than feel that you are not connected at college, make a goal to connect. Choose at least one thing to become involved in, whether it’s a fun group, study group, club, or something else. Make the connection so you feel that you are not there struggling alone. This is especially important during this time when so many people are isolated with online education.
  • De-stress. When the stress of juggling everything becomes too much, that’s when many college students want to walk away. Make a commitment to yourself to reduce stress every week. To do this, you can take up hiking, meditation, yoga, or whatever it is that will help you to de-stress in a healthy way.
  • Get help. Those who are struggling academically should get the help they need, rather than fall behind, which will make them drop out. A tutor can help give you the one-on-one assistance you need to gain a better understanding of the subject or lesson and will help keep you on pace.
  • Be gentle on yourself. Many people get upset if they are struggling a little, and they beat themselves up over it. Learn to take things easy, go with the flow, and give yourself a break. Treat yourself how you would treat your best friend if they were in the same position.

“When you are struggling in college, it’s so important to know that there is help available,” added Florence. “No matter what subject you are having difficulties with, there’s a good chance that you can get the assistance you need and keep going. We are happy to be help college students around the nation continue meeting their educational goals.”

There’s good reason to finish college and earn the degree. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the more you learn, the more you tend to earn. Those with the highest educational attainment tend to make triple of those who just have a high school education. The average weekly earnings for someone with only a high school diploma is $712, compared to the average for someone with a bachelor’s degree being $1,173. Plus, the bureau reports that the unemployment rate is lower for those who have more higher education.

The Oxford Method has over 100 tutors around the country, covering all subject areas. They offer online tutoring, as well as in-person and in-classroom options. Their tutoring services are available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Instructors have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with many of them having a master’s degree, PhD, and at least four years of teaching experience. The Oxford Method works with their nonprofit, Social Actualization, Inc., by giving them 10% of all profits. The funds are used to provide free computers, high-speed internet, and instruction to underprivileged families in urban and rural America. Plus, 40% of their instructors are PhDs, 40% have a master’s degree, and 20% have only a bachelor’s degree.

Subject areas include science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as business, social studies, psychology, English, history, public speaking, study methods, test taking, and more. To get more information about The Oxford Method, visit the website.

Rob Kenner × Nipsey Hussle

Rob Kenner is one of the most prolific and influential voices in hip hop publishing and a founding editor of Vibe magazine.

After meeting Nipsey Hussle in the offices of Vibe, Kenner spent the next ten years tracking the life and career of the hip hop mogul, artist, and activist. THE MARATHON DON’T STOP: The Life and Times of Nipsey Hussle by Rob Kenner (Atria Books; Hardcover; March 23, 2021; $27.00; ISBN: 9781982140298) is the first in-depth biography of Nipsey Hussle, whose transformative legacy inspired a generation with his motivational lyrics and visionary business savvy—before he was tragically shot down two years ago, on March 31, 2019 in the very neighborhood he was dedicated to building up.

Combining on-the-ground reporting and candid interviews with Hussle’s friends, family, and peers, THE MARATHON DON’T STOP traces the life and work of an extraordinary artist, placing him in historical context and unpacking his complex legacy.

Some details of Hussle’s life that Kenner can discuss in an interview include:

  • Ermias Asghedom, before he was Nipsey Hussle, was a brilliant, soft-spoken, and underestimated young man who loved hip hop with a passion and was determined to build his own successful music label and clothing business—as well as other businesses that would employ many members of his community.
  • His life in the Crenshaw District starting in 1985, placing Hussle in historical context within the evolution of Hip Hop, Los Angeles, and America.
  • Hussle’s genius as a teenager who built his own computers and went on to push the envelope of technology in growing his businesses as well as innovating new revenue models for independent musicians that have since been adopted by the mainstream music industry
  • Hussle’s life-changing trip to Africa to visit his father’s family in Eritrea, as well as his little-known first meeting with Afeni Shakur, long before he called himself the ‘Tupac of My Generation’ or even took the rap name Nipsey Hussle.
  • Hussle’s impact as an activist, and his efforts to re-align L.A. gang culture with the mission of organizations like the Black Panthers…AND MORE.

Rob Kenner is one of the most prolific and influential voices in hip-hop publishing. A founding editor of Vibe, Kenner joined the start-up team of Quincy Jones’ groundbreaking hip hop monthly in 1992. During a nineteen-year run at Vibe he edited and wrote cover and feature stories on iconic cultural figures ranging from Tupac Shakur to Barack Obama as well as writing the acclaimed column Boomshots. Kenner’s writing has appeared in ComplexGeniusMass AppealPigeons & PlanesEgo TripPoetry magazine, The New York Times, and Billboard. He’s also produced and directed documentary shorts on the likes of De La Soul, Nas, and Post Malone. As an editor at Vibe Books, Kenner worked on the New York Times bestseller Tupac Shakur and contributed to The Vibe History of Hip Hop. He went on to co-author VX: 10 Years of Vibe Photography and produced the book Unbelievable, a biography of The Notorious B.I.G. by Cheo Hodari Coker Jr., which was optioned for the motion picture Notorious.

PAUL × LINDA MCCARTNEY – RAM

50th Anniversary Limited Edition Vinyl Release

to be made available on May 14, 2021

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Paul and Linda McCartney’s 1971 masterpiece RAM, the album will be reissued May 14, 2021, as a limited-edition half-speed mastered vinyl pressing via UMe.

Paul‘s most recent release, the #1 album McCartney III, recorded in “Rockdown” last year, saw a return to the homespun, lo-fi style of the earliest days of his solo career.  The eclectic charm and intimacy of 1970’s McCartney and 1971’s RAM found Paul redefining his post-Beatles creative identity, while unconsciously rewriting the rules of pop music and creating new genres along the way—or as Pitchfork would later describe RAM‘s sustained influence on generations of fans and musicians alike, “inventing an approach to pop music that would eventually become someone else’s indie-pop.”

The only album to be credited to both Paul and Linda McCartney, RAM was created mostly at Paul and Linda’s farm in Scotland (following initial, more traditional studio sessions in New York).  Unlike the completely solo sessions that resulted in Paul’s eponymous debut album, the recording of RAM found Paul and Linda enlisting a number of musicians, including Denny Seiwell, who would become a founding member of Wings, Paul’s next musical adventure.

The RAM sessions were completed in early 1971, also yielding the standalone single Another Day“, a worldwide hit that preceded RAM‘s May 1971 release.

RAM‘s singular sonic palette was unlike its predecessor—or anything else for that matter—and has grown exponentially in stature and influence over the decades. Critically polarizing at the time, the album was instantly beloved by fans, hitting #1 in the UK and giving Paul his first post-Beatles American #1 single, the GRAMMY-winning Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.  In recent years the record has continued to solidify its standing as one of the most loved in Paul’s unparalleled output. Fans and critics alike continue to sing its praises: Rolling Stone has hailed the album as a “masterpiece” and “a grand psychedelic ramble full of divine melodies,” Pitchfork has praised it as “a domestic-bliss album, one of the weirdest, earthiest, and most honest ever made,” and Mojo, perhaps most accurately of all, has deemed RAM “quintessentially McCartney.”

Where Women Made History campaign

National Trust and Benjamin Moore Honor Women’s Impact on American History

This month, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with Benjamin Moore, announced plans to restore two buildings that honor the significant contributions of diverse women to American progress.  Azurest South in Petersburg, VA, was designed in 1939 by Amaza Lee Meredith, one of the country’s first Black female architects; and the McDonogh 19 Elementary School in 9th Ward of New Orleans, LA, was one of the first schools integrated in New Orleans after the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education.

Both projects are part of the National Trust’s Where Women Made History campaign and a continuation of the collaboration between the National Trust and Benjamin Moore launched in 2020 with the interior restoration of the Women’s Building in San Francisco, CA, and the exterior transformation of the Odd Fellows Building in Astoria, OR.  Support from the National Trust and Benjamin Moore for these sites of women’s achievement and empowerment comes during a critical time of global pandemic and economic uncertainty in which women across the country are in crisis.

Christina Morris, manager of the Where Women Made History campaign for the National Trust, said, “The women whose stories are preserved in these places embody the spirit of the Where Women Made History campaign.  These are women who pushed beyond the boundaries of what they were told was acceptable or even possible.  We owe them an enormous debt for establishing the essential—but often unseen—foundation that lifts up women and girls today and gives them the freedom to pursue their own dreams.”

“It is a privilege to be able to preserve several historic sites with significant roots in women’s history,” said Jeannie West, Benjamin Moore Senior Vice President of Human Resources.  “Together with the National Trust, we’ll pay homage to these female trailblazers who helped shape us into the nation we are today.”

The National Trust’s Where Women Made History campaign is designed to address the centuries of gender inequality that have led to the erasure of many pivotal stories of women’s history, creating an inaccurate perception of their fundamental role in shaping American identity.  These inequalities have been laid bare over the last year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with its disproportionate and devastating effects on women, particularly women of color, who were forced to shutter their businesses and who became unemployed at a rate four times higher than their male counterparts.  Through the Where Women Made History campaign, the National Trust plans to raise and invest $10 million in philanthropic support to elevate and preserve 100 places across the country where women of all backgrounds, ages, beliefs, and identities have made history.

In addition to the four Benjamin Moore projects, the campaign is active on many other fronts, conducting a nationwide crowdsourcing effort that garnered over 1,200 formerly unrecognized places where women made history from across all 50 states; adding new sites related to women artists to expand the diversity and representation in the National Trust’s Historic Artists Homes and Studios program; providing grants to directly support dozens of projects and places of women’s history around the country; creating the first all-female HOPE (Hands-On Preservation Experience) Crew projects to empower the next generation of female preservationists and craftspeople through the restoration of women’s history sites; sharing the stories of groundbreaking female leaders in Preservation magazine; and taking action to save nationally-significant places of women’s history, such as the San Francisco, CA, home of LGBTQ+ civil rights pioneers and activists Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, Natalie de Blois’s spectacular Terrace Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati, OH, and the National Historic Landmark Harada House in Riverside, CA, where Sumi Harada played a critical role in a lawsuit that allowed Japanese Americans to own property in California and later provided a safe haven for Japanese Americans who had been forcibly relocated to incarceration camps during World War II.

In partnership with Benjamin Moore, the two new sites announced this month highlight the impact African American women have had on American history.

Architect, educator, and artist Amaza Lee Meredith designed Azurest South in 1938 as the lifetime residence and personal studio for herself and her partner, Dr. Edna Meade Colson. Ms. Meredith also is credited with establishing and running the Fine Art Department at Virginia State University (VSU) for over two decades.  The home is now owned by the VSU Alumni Association. Benjamin Moore will provide approximately 150 gallons of paint to help with restoration work on both the interior and exterior of the small but stunning Moderne property, and we hope to include students in the VSU Fine Art Department in the project to carry Amaza Lee’s legacy forward to the next generation.

McDonogh 19 Elementary is one of two historic sites in the 9th Ward of New Orleans, LA, where school desegregation first took place. On November 14, 1960, three six-year-old girls – Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost – made history when they climbed the 18 stairs to enter the then all-white school. On the same morning, Ruby Bridges integrated William Frantz Elementary. These four girls became the first African Americans to integrate formerly all-white schools in the Jim Crow Deep South and have since been known as the “New Orleans Four.”

Closed in 2004, the McDonogh 19 Elementary School is currently being transformed by the Leona Tate Foundation for Change, Inc. as a mixed-use facility, that, in addition to senior housing, will feature education and exhibition space dedicated to the history of New Orleans public school desegregation, civil rights, and restorative justice.  The building is being renamed the Tate Etienne & Prevost Interpretive Center.

Both sites are expected to be completed by summer 2021, and their progress and transformation will be documented with photos and videos that will be released later this year.
