Plant-Based Easter Basket

Spring is a few weeks away, and holidays are coming up too. Many want to put some spring-like decorations on the table or use them as a centerpiece. But some don’t know where to begin. Lively Root wants to guide you through the process so you can use what you have on the shelves while also using your indoor plants!

What type of container?
Let’s build a table arrangement together. Start with digging through your old Easter baskets, containers of any shape, size, or color (painting is optional later). Set them all out.

Gather the Extras
Then pull together any accessories you might want to use in your display. You can use Easter motifs like eggs, crosses, bunnies, carrots, cabbages, etc. We will use birds, eggs, and nests for our presentation so the arrangement could be in use for longer than just one holiday. You may even venture out on a walk and pick up bits of nature to use too. Mosses, twigs, dried cones, or leaves can also be a part of the collection.

Grouping Plants and What to Consider
Next, gather your houseplants in the 4-6″ grower pot containers that you have. Different heights would be excellent, as well as those that have pretty colored leaves or blooms. For this presentation, the kalanchoes and Neanthe Bella Palm, Snake plant, English ivy gold child, spider plant, and pink polka dot plant are compatible because they all like to dry out between waterings. As you assemble plants in groupings, you’ll want to consider their light needs as well as watering and humidity needs. You may want to use this assembly temporarily or for several weeks. It will be easier to maintain if all the plants take basically the same type of care.

Recycle and Repurpose
If this will be semi-permanent, you’ll want to make sure that your container drains well. If your planter doesn’t have a drainage hole, get out your handy-dandy drill and drill a few holes in the bottom.

You may want to recycle an old Easter basket or gift container you got a gift in prior. You may find something but not like the color anymore! That’s when a paintbrush and chalk paint comes in handy. It’s easy to use and easy to clean up.

If you don’t have a collection of has-beens, drop by the local resale store and rummage through their cast-aways. You’re sure to find the perfect container.

Create Groupings
Once you have your containers, clean them up, paint them and let them dry. Next, assemble your plants and accessories. Do small groupings to see what you like best. Place the plants (in the grower pot) in your chosen container just to see how the arrangement looks before assembling. Take a picture with your phone to remember the setup. Then remove all the items. We use a screen to place over the container’s bottom to help hold the soil, so it doesn’t drip through and clog the drainage holes.

Next, select the correct potting soil for the plants you assemble. At this point, you can either keep the plants in the grower pot and set them in the container and cover them with craft moss or pot them straight into the decorative container. It’s up to you. If it is a temporary selection, then the grower pot assembly may be the easiest way to go. We use a cactus and succulent mix with a little well-draining potting mix together for these plants.

Plant and Assemble

You will want to build the soil up a bit before placing the plants. Remember to leave the soil line below the top of the container about 1/2-1 inch so there won’t be water spillover. If using it temporarily, you can keep the plant in the grower pot and place them on the soil. If you’re using it as a more permanent collection, remove the grower pot and place the plant where you want it in the assembly. As you go, fill in around each plant, tucking soil in between each one so the roots are covered and secure.

Do the rest the same way. If needed, make a funnel out of a plastic container or poster board and feed the soil through it to get to the tight spots where your hands don’t fit. Tamp down the soil with your fingers or a spoon. Be careful not to bury the top of the stems in soil but just up to your plant’s soil line. You can add a top dressing of time-release fertilizer or use a balanced liquid fertilizer when watering. Once it all is assembled, use a clean paintbrush to brush any excess soil on the leaves. Then check the soil moisture around each plant and water as needed. Next, top dress with craft moss or colored rocks.

Then slide in your accessories to make it festive!

Mix Nature In
Another fun way to decorate around the house is to use the nature items you might have picked up outside. Bark, twigs, and moss can be a part of the next project. Inspect the items for ants, bugs, or the like before assembly and remove them.

Keep your plant inside its grower pot. Use a hot glue gun to glue the pieces around the grower pot and assemble them in an organic arrangement.

Finish it off with some twine or raffia. Set these on a side table or in a collection together. Or you can use them at each place setting as a take-home gift for your guests.

Now, once you’ve got your decorations finished, snap a photo and share it with us on Instagram or Facebook! We’d love to see your plant creations! Tag us with #LivelyRoot and share the love!

Extra bonus:
Use your children’s leftover Easter baskets to repurpose into a summer arrangement by following the same instructions as above. We didn’t plant them in the soil this time but left them in the grower pots and tucked moss around the containers. When it’s time to water, just disassemble, water, let drain, and then place back into the basket. We included a clear plastic saucer to protect the basket in case of leftover dripping

Advice For My Pre-Pandemic Self

“I’d Dance Alone In Public And Not Give A Damn”: Advice I’d Give My Pre-Pandemic Self

By: Laura J. Wellington

If I had the opportunity to go back in time and give myself one piece of advice pre-pandemic, I just couldn’t do it. I simply couldn’t choose between all the tidbits of wisdom that I’ve gained during this time. Each is monumental and will play a role in shaping my future. Never one to be confined, I won’t do so to my words or my desire to help others through them. You are getting all ten:

1. Dance alone in public and don’t give a damn what others think

“Feeling self-conscious” and robbing yourself of a good time will make you wish you had taken the opportunities presented to you. Don’t give into fear. GO FOR IT!

2. Walk up to the adorable guy and hand him your number

You won’t lose anything by doing this, besides losing the feeling of not knowing what could have been. Go find out what could be!

3. Remove the timer from family time

Lingering around the table with loved ones without worrying about what needs to get done next should become a priority, not a luxury. You surely will miss it when it’s gone.

4. Skip the “run” and play “sooner”

It’s important to be responsible, but its alsp important to “self-joy” and create memories. No one remembers doing laundry, but they do remember beach time with the kids.

5. Make the trip

Allowing distance or laziness to deter you from something you want or need to do equates with stealing from your personal welfare. It can also land you in a rut. Push yourself out the door and have that lunch in the new spot you’ve always wanted to try. You will be happy you did, and it may even help stop depression.

6. Close your friend circle

Devote more time to the friends who truly matter, and less time to casual friends. The former will be the ones who stick around during life’s difficult moments and will make them more bearable. Quality over quantity, always.

7. Enjoy the 10am Margarita

Not everyday, but while on vacation. Too many of us take vacations only to never truly let go of the reins while away. Don’t squander this valuable leisure time.

8. Work harder to mend broken fences

Because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to anyone and you will regret not trying.

9. Take life less seriously

Humor is power, internally and externally. Learn to laugh and you will give life someone to reckon with.

10. Stop fixing yourself

Obsessing over “perfection” is such a time suck and mental drain. Yes, self-improvement is important, but so is accepting yourself as you are. Strike a reasonable balance for yourself, and then move on.

Now do you understand why I couldn’t leave my advice to just one tip? Frankly, I could add plenty of more points to this list but perhaps, another post, another time. For now, I suggest you ponder these. Consider how you will factor them into your own life, today and when we all finally move beyond the pandemic. In the immortal words of the famed group “Disturbed” in their song “The Light” (one of my personal favorites): “Sometimes darkness, can show you the light.

So very true…and on that note, I feel inspired to dance. No partner required.

“I am an avid reader. By that I mean I love books and cannot be without one. A good book can take you to places you have never been or teach a new skill. A great book can change your life. This is a great book! After suffering a tragic, life altering loss I wasn’t sure I could finish Laura Wellington’s book. “Be Careful What You Wish For” – How many times have I heard this in different contexts? Too many times–but not like this. From the first page I was swept into a world that was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I couldn’t help questioning the ideas of fate and destiny and what part they played in my own life. The ending (or is it just the beginning?) will leave you breathless and wondering, is it worth the pain to open oneself to such vulnerability? As one who was and is experiencing this same pain and vulnerability, I would answer YES. The alternative would be to miss “The Dance”. Thank you Laura for this well written, heart wrenching but life affirming story. I highly recommend it!” – Life Affirming (Amazon 5 stars)

Ben Howard – Sorry Kid

Ben Howard Shares New Track, “Sorry Kid”

Collections From The Whiteout, To Be Released March 26 2021

Global Transmission From Goonhilly Earth Satellite Station In April

Autumn Headline Shows at Royal Festival Hall Sell Out Immediately

“Mesmerizes with quiet complexity…another strange and beautiful record” –Mojo

Ben Howard is pleased to share a new track, “Sorry Kid“, from his forthcoming album, Collections From The Whiteout. The record, his fourth, will be released on March 26 through Island Records. It’s the final track to be shared ahead of the album’s release.

“Sorry Kid” is loosely inspired by the story of Anna Sorokin, the Russian-born German woman who posed as a billionaire heiress and was imprisoned for fraudulent activity in America. Musically, it’s an atmospheric mood-setter that taps into the general aura of Collections From The Whiteout, and is another tantalizing taster to a special record.

Last week, Ben shared details of an exclusive one-off global live stream event to celebrate the release of the new record.

Filmed at the iconic Goonhilly Earth Station on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, UK, Ben and his band will perform new album tracks for the first time. This show marks the first band performance since the conclusion of a worldwide tour in January 2019, which culminated in a sold-out four night run at Brixton Academy.

The film will be streamed as live on April 8 across different time zones.

Stream #1, UK & Europe (Global Premiere): Thursday April 8 – LONDON (8pm BST), PARIS (9pm CET)
Stream #2, East Coast North America & South America: Thursday April 8– NEW YORK (8PM EDT)
Stream #3, West Coast North America & Central America: Thursday April 8- LA (8PM PDT)
Stream #4, Australasia & South East Asia: Friday April 9- TOKYO/SYDNEY (7PM JST / 8PM AEST)

Tickets are now on general sale via Ticketmaster/Universe.

As previously announced, Ben returns to the live arena in September for his first live shows since four consecutive sold-out nights at Brixton Academy back in January 2019. The pair of Royal Festival Hall (September 18 and 19) sold out instantly.

Collections From The Whiteout heralds the first time Ben has opened the door to collaboration, drafting in The National’s Aaron Dessner on production (a recent Grammy winner for his work with Taylor Swift), and a team of players from the likes of Big Thief, This Is The Kit, and drummer/producer Yussef Dayes. Strings were orchestrated by Bon Iver/Laura Marling collaborator, Rob Moose.

Collections From The Whiteout has an immediately breezier tone than Ben’s last record, whilst losing none of the experimental tendencies that made Noonday Dream so compelling.

The subject matter, previously shrouded in obfuscation, takes a scrapbook approach to Ben’s lyricism. Mostly based on snippets of radio news or headline scrolling, he’s let his imagination take those snapshots to wild and remote places, creating stories within stories. Characters are formed, histories are inferred. It’s beautifully random, and makes for an engrossing whole.

Boulder Shooter Kills Ten People

Colorado Supermarket Mass Shooting:

Gunman kills 10, including police officer

The series of mass shootings have continued within the United States, this time in Boulder Colorado at 3600 Table Mesa Drive. A gunman killed 10 people at a King Soopers supermarket on Monday afternoon. One of the victims included police officer Eric Talley who was first on the scene. Officer Talley was first to respond to report of gunfire at the grocery store. The workers and shoppers that survived were able to flee the scene and others were able to take shelter within the store – enduring the horrific violence that echoed throughout the store.

The shooting started shortly after 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot of King Soopers. Videographer Dean Schiller provided a livestream video showing what appears to be victims and an employee saying the shooter was inside of the store. Two roommates commented that “he just came in and started shooting” without saying a word. They went on to note that the gunman “let off a couple of shots, then was silent, and then he let off a couple more – He wasn’t spraying.”.

Survivor Ryan Borowski commented to CNN’s Don Lemon that he was still processing what happened. Borowski had just gone to buy some ice cream at the grocery store. He had changed his mind at the last minute and went down a different aisle. Borowski then heard the first gunshots, which he then started running to the back of the store. Borowski and several others rushed out of the store through the back, telling employees “Gun, gun, gun. Run, run, run.” Borowski went on to comment “I don’t remember anybody screaming. It was just go, go, go, get out of here… I knew I had to move.”.

Steven McHugh commented that his son-in-law and his two granddaughters were in the store as their dad got the vaccination for Covid-19. McHugh was told that his family watched people get shot and managed to run to a staff area to hide in a coat closet until police were able to intervene.

The 21-year-old suspect, Ahmad Al Issa, was taken into custody and treated for injuries, however, there are not many answers as to why the violent crime was carried out. Issa is facing 10 counts of first-degree murder and will be taken to Boulder County Jail. Officials say it will take days to investigate the crime scene thoroughly and notify families of the loss of their loved ones. Local, state, and federal agencies responded to the scene to aid in the investigation.

Officer Eric Talley had been with the department since 2010 and was very passionate about his job according to Officer Mark Bliley, head of the Boulder Police Department’s union. Bliley continued to say that Talley had a unique ability to connect with people; that he was a highly respected, well-loved person and officer – a solid person that everyone loved.

Kelli McGannon, King Soopers spokeswoman, said the company is working with investigators and will be deferring to law enforcement on all inquiries about the shooting. “Our hearts are broken over this senseless act of violence,” she said.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords commented “It’s beyond time for our leaders to take action” on gun control. Giffords is a gun control advocate and mass shooting survivor. She went on to comment that “This is not normal, and it doesn’t have to be this way. This is an especially personal tragedy for me. I survived a shooting at a grocery store, in a tragedy that devastated my beloved community of Tucson. It’s been 10 years, and countless American communities have had to face something similar. Today it’s a tragedy in Boulder, Colorado. This past weekend it was a house party in Philadelphia. And last week it was an armed attack on Asian American women in the Atlanta area.”

The supermarket shooting occurred just seven days after the violent mass shooting in Atlanta where eight innocent people, including six Asian women, were killed when a gunman terrorized three spas. On March 17, five people were gunned down in a drive-by shooting while preparing a vigil in Stockton, California. Just a day later, four victims were shot in Gresham, Oregon. In Houston, five people were shot within a club during a disturbance on March 20. In Philadelphia, five people were injured and one murdered during a shooting at a party on the same day.

The Colorado Healing Fund is collecting donations for victims of the Boulder shooting. The Colorado Healing Fund is a non-profit organization created to support victims of mass tragedies.

Victims of the King Sooper’s Mass Shooting:

  • Denny Strong, 20 years old
  • Neven Stoanisic, 23 years old
  • Rikki Olds, 25 years old
  • Tralona Bartkowiak, 49 years old
  • Suzanne Fountain, 59 years old

SS21 INTERIOR TREND: BEIGE BALANCE

Over the next four weeks, Desenio will be launching its key trends for SS21. This week, Desenio is introducing Beige Balance, a trend that puts warmer hues in the spotlight. Welcome to the new neutrals: here are some tips for bringing the Beige Balance trend to life.

ELEGANT RETROSPECTION

“We’re seeing a new, elegant take on the warm neutrals trend, influenced by the 60s and 70s,” says Desenio’s Executive Creative Director, Annica Wallin.

The elegant aesthetics of the 60s and 70s are making a huge come-back. Juxtapose warm neutrals with dark brown or black accents to give definition. Consider incorporating vintage posters in your gallery wall to create a sophisticated tone.

MIX AND MATCH

“Layering cozy textures and different natural materials helps to create intrigue in an otherwise minimalistic home,” says Annica Wallin.

Minimalist interior trends in 2021 focus on pared-back spaces that are also cozy and inviting. Experiment by mixing textures and shapes that complement and contrast. Why not pair graphic art prints with curved statement-furniture, or offset cozy fabrics with wooden frames? Use your creative intuition to figure out what works for you.

RETREAT TO COMFORT

“Like never before, there’s a desire to create a cocoon in our home to retreat from the outside world,” says Annica Wallin.

The Beige Balance trend is all about creating a comforting environment to make you feel at your most peaceful, no matter what the world throws at you. Select prints featuring mindful quotations or zen photography so that you can truly enjoy your space.

Gov Noem × Anti-Trans Sports Bills

South Dakota Gov. Noem Exposes Vulnerabilities for All States Considering Anti-Trans Sports Bills

On Friday, March 19th, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem issued a style-and-form veto of HB 1217, the anti-transgender sports ban bill that she had previously expressed excitement about signing. Having made several substantive changes to the legislation, including striking collegiate-level provisions from the bill, it will now be sent back to the legislature. This backtrack, by even an extreme governor with national political aspirations, exposes the economic, legal, and reputational threats these bills pose to states considering anti-transgender legislation and has sparked an uproar amongst conservative groups who see Governor Noem playing politics and trying to have it both ways.

Gov. Noem’s winding path from “excited to sign” to a veto

Today, Noem held a press conference standing alongside known anti-LGBTQ extremists to justify her veto

  • Today in a press conference, Governor Noem announced the creation of a coalition to “Defend Title IX Now” which appears to be a national list-building exercise by Noem, with a website created yesterday by someone in Ohio (coincidentally, Governor Noem’s campaign website was created by Ohio political consultants The Aventine Group). This website’s “paid for by” disclaimer refers to a committee that is not yet registered with the Federal Election Commission or the South Dakota Secretary of State’s office.
  • When asked in today’s press conference why she was pressing a ban on transgender student athletes when there are no transgender players currently competing in secondary school sports in South Dakota, Gov. Noem replied “it’s an issue because people are talking about it and for the future.”
  • Among the speakers in today’s press conference was former NFL player Jack Brewer who, in March of 2020, said that he opposed President Barack Obama for “normaliz[ing] the black gay culture.”
  • Noem said of HB 1217, that it was a “trial lawyer’s dream” that would open the state to litigation in its current form and expressed concern for NCAA repercussions, saying “if we’re going beyond [K-12] to the collegiate level…just know that we could face retaliation — it’s more than likely, and at that point, we would have to sue, which is a cost to the taxpayers.”

From praise to condemnation from anti-equality extremist groups

  • When announcing her support for signing the legislation, Noem quote-tweeted the American Principles Project.
  • But only weeks later, American Principles Project shared their condemnation of Governor Noem’s style-and-form veto of HB 1217, saying that she “[broke] her word,” “[froze] out advocates of HB 1217 and instead [took] advice from the bill’s most vocal critics,” and that “[b]y standing with Joe Biden and the radical left against protecting women’s sports, Noem has irreparably damaged her standing with both her own constituents as well as Americans nationally… This betrayal will have political consequences.”
  • The Alliance Defending Freedom, a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group, went from support to condemnation as well, saying in a statement that Governor Noem “abuse[d]” her veto power to “cave to ‘woke’ corporate ideology.” They similarly called Noem’s actions a “betrayal” and characterized today’s press conference as damage control to rehabilitate her “credibility and political image.”
  • In reaction to today’s press conference, Sean Davis, co-founder of the conservative publication The Federalist tweeted: “Stop making excuses and insulting everyone’s intelligence and sign the bill already. This is embarrassing.”

VOD and DVD release of the feature-length film, Lady of Guadalupe from Director Pedro Brenner, Producer Robert Hymers and Pinnacle Entertainment on April 6. Following Galaxy Theaters’  December theatrical release across the U.S. and Mexico, Nova Vento Entertainment will be re-releasing the film into theaters across the U.S. beginning in April. Presented in both English and Spanish, the film depicts the revered religious and cultural icons (the Virgin of Guadalupe and Juan Diego) and is the first modern production of Juan Diego’s story. It will be available on all major cable and VOD platforms in the US and Canada and on DVD on April 13.

Based on true events, Lady of Guadalupe is a moving religious discovery juxtaposing folklore and present day. Historically significant recreations are used to illustrate the origin of her prevalent and powerful symbolism of Mexican identity and faith. When a young and ambitious reporter (Guillermo Iván) is assigned an article on faith, he finds himself enmeshed in the legend of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Skeptical of miracles and the importance of modern-day Christianity, the reporter’s investigation takes him from cynic to true believer as his personal limits are tested.
