Male pattern baldness article illustration for 360 magazine by Kaelen Felix

Embrace the Shine: What Being Bald Says About a Man

Bald men are more likely, on average, to say that they’re sexier than their hairy counterparts. However, those with hair are more likely to be terrified at the prospect of losing their hair, leading to an apparent discrepancy. Regardless of how an individual man feels about hair loss, there are actually many social benefits to shaving off your locks.

Here’s the Honest Truth: Partially Bald Men are Less Attractive

When men and women were polled to determine what was more attractive: men with hair or without it, there tended to be a consensus that either or was up to preference. However, if you’re partially balding, have a bald spot on the top or sides of your head, you’re considered less attractive on average. They were also perceived as weaker compared to bald men.

Many men keep a bit of hair on their head, even if they’re balding because it’s difficult to accept their hair is receding. If you’re not ready to completely get rid of your hair, you can purchase expensive hair plugs or try a finasteride tablet treatment plan.

On Average, Bald Men are More Attractive than Those with Hair

You don’t need to worry about keeping those locks forever because women consider bald men incredibly attractive. Plenty of celebrities like Jeff Bezos, Jason Statham, and Bruce Willis have no hair on their heads, and they’re among the most high-profile, rich stars in the world. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is actually the richest man on earth.

None of them needed hair to achieve their goals or attract a partner – and neither do you. There’s just something about being bald that entices women, and it’s probably the fact that you don’t care about social expectations and embrace your true style. Realize that a lack of hair doesn’t mean a lack of masculinity or attractiveness!

Bald Men are Seen as Stronger

Men with entirely bald heads were perceived to be more masculine, taller, dominant, and about 13% stronger than those with full heads of hair, according to this United States study conducted in 2012. This association with masculinity may be appropriate for men who want to hold power in government to shave off all thinning hair completely.

Many other magazines have tried to mimic this study to see what their viewers thought. The Guardian photoshopped celebrities without hair and compared them to their typically hairy selves. About half of the celebrities selected were seen as appearing more powerful without hair, including Harry Styles and Simon Cowell.

Bald Men Are More Intelligent

Researches from Barry University in Florida created a social experiment that asked if baldness in men made them more physically attractive, aggressive, tolerant, or mature. They found that men with fuller hair were lower than bald men on all of these metrics – including intelligence. All ratings were consistent with all of their participants.

The reason for this is because bald men are typically older, though obviously, that isn’t always the case. Older men are seen as more intelligent and wiser, which can only come with experience. Men no longer need to have a piece of paper to hold the appearance of intelligence; you only need to shave off those hairs!

Bald Men are Seen as More Sexually Potent

Male pattern baldness is associated with too much testosterone in the average person’s body, which is the primary sex hormone. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Baldness is actually caused by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative product of testosterone.

While baldness doesn’t actually make you more sexually potent, you can use that rumor to your advantage. After all, baldness doesn’t make you stronger or more intelligent; it makes you perceive these traits. What’s the harm in your potential partner thinking you’re better in bed because you’re bald?

Livingston – Superkid

Eighteen-year-old artist Livingston has debuted new single “Superkid,” the first taste of music from his upcoming EP An Unlikely Origin Story, slated for release in 2021. The track is accompanied by a powerful visual written and directed by Livingston himself, which finds the artist inhabiting multiple characters who influenced the artist throughout his life. “Superkid” is available now on all streaming platforms, with the video streaming now on Livingston’s official YouTube channel.

Livingston commented on the track, “‘Superkid’ is a song for anyone going through a massive change of scenery it’s a cautionary tale to remember that running away from your problems won’t do away with your insecurity, and a reminder that you never need to try and change who you truly are to blend in with the crowd.”

Earlier this summer, the self-taught singer, songwriter, producer and engineer shared his debut EP Lighthouse, praised as “uplifting and inspiring” by PopularTV and earning Livingston the title of “pop star in the making” from Ones To Watch. The eight-track collection is available now at all DSPs via Elektra Records and features standout track “Carnival” in addition to singles “Home,” “Say The Word,” and “Fairytale” the latter of which was shared by Billboard alongside the artist’s Elektra Records signing announcement. In less than six months, Livingston has racked up over 20 million streams on DSPs, one million+ followers on Tik Tok including 60 million channel views and has quickly established himself as an artist on the rise.

Growing up in Denton, Texas, Livingston was faced with bullying, anxiety and relentless self-doubt. Throughout his childhood, he struggled to fit in and faced a constant battle to find his place in the world ߝ finally finding the connection and understanding he sought when he poured his feelings of loneliness, isolation and inadequacy into song. Drawing inspiration for his “orchestral cinematic pop” from a wide range of artists in pop, hip hop and film scores, Livingston combines instantly memorable melodies with sweeping orchestral compositions and is first and foremost driven by honest storytelling.

Summer Walker × Interscope Records – Ghetto Earth Records

Platinum-selling award-winning artist Summer Walker (LVRN/Interscope Records) begins her journey as an executive with her new imprint Ghetto Earth Records. The joint venture deal with Interscope Records lands Walker her first signee NO1-NOAH. The talented singer/songwriter recently partnered up with the Over It artist on her Life on Earth EP and together, they shined on “White Tee” and “SWV.”

“I came up with Ghetto Earth because earth is ghetto,” says Walker. “I don’t wanna be controlling over my artist’s music. I want them to be fully involved in everything they put out. I’m just here to support and help them get to wherever it is they’re trying to go in life.”

NO1-NOAH comments, “I’m excited to show people my music, and what I have to offer. I feel like being on Summer’s team, Ghetto Earth Records, is the right home for me to be as creative as possible as an artist. She’s really understanding of what a true artist is, as she is one herself. I’m free to create here and it’s always a great feeling as an artist to be able to make music for a team that gets the sound that you’re trying to create.”

“Summer is a true visionary. She’s writing her own rules as one of the most talented artists in R&B music today and is now adding entrepreneur to her vast repertoire,” says Interscope Records Nicole Wyskoarko, EVP/Co-Head of A&R. “Summer brings an unapologetically outspoken and empowering voice to Ghetto Earth and a radically different and much-needed perspective to developing emerging talent such as NO1-NOAH. We are thrilled that Summer has chosen Interscope as Ghetto Earth’s partner and home.”

SUMMER WALKER’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS

On the artist front, Walker is having an incredible year. After gracing the cover of Billboard Magazine for their R&B / Hip-Hop Power Players issue last month, she starred alongside Erykah Badu for Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians cover. Her win streak continued when she walked away victorious at the Soul Train Music Awards last month, winning Album of the Year for Over It. Her latest feat adds to her growing collection of awards, as she previously netted wins at the iHeartRadio Music Awards for Best New R&B Artist and the Billboard Music Awards for Top R&B Female Artist.

Over It contains the platinum-certified single “Come Thru” and the double-platinum hit “Playing Games.” The latter has spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100. Over It has spent 49 weeks in the top 40 and 56 weeks in the top 50 on the Billboard 200 Album chart. In July, Walker’s EP, Life on Earth, debuted inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 at No. 8.

UVA on Battling Diseases by Exercise

A top exercise researcher and colleagues at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have launched an ambitious effort to understand the whole-body benefits of exercise so that doctors can use that information to prevent and treat disease.

Zhen Yan, PhD, and his collaborators aim to identify the sources, functions and targets of the molecules that provide exercise’s well-documented health benefits. By understanding this, doctors will better understand how exercise helps fend off disease, and they may be able to design drugs to mimic those benefits for people who cannot exercise, such as those with limited mobility. The cutting-edge research could open new doors both for preventing and treating many common illnesses, the researchers hope.

“No one would dispute that physical activity or regular exercise is the best measures for health promotion and disease prevention,” said Yan, director of the Center for Skeletal Muscle Research at UVA’s Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center. “In fact, the health benefits of exercise are way beyond our imagination. The underlying reasons for the superb health benefits of exercise are being uncovered by many talented and passionate scientists around the world.”

Understanding How Exercise Improves Health

The UVA researchers have recently joined a national consortium seeking to create a “molecular map” of exercise benefits. Known as the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium, or MoTrPAC, the group includes researchers at top institutions across the country, including Harvard, Duke, Stanford and Mayo Clinic.

The consortium came about after the National Institutes of Health invited Yan and a dozen other prominent scientists to a roundtable discussion in 2010 about the future of exercise research and the obstacles that stood in its way. The NIH then set aside almost $170 million for MoTrPAC’s research – believed to be the agency’s largest-ever investment into the mechanisms of how physical activity improves health and prevents disease.

“The program’s goal,” Yan explained, “is to study the molecular changes that occur during and after exercise and ultimately to advance the understanding of how physical activity improves and preserves health.”

The consortium is looking at exercise benefits in both humans and animal models. Initial animal research was conducted at Harvard, the University of Iowa and the University of Florida. In the latest round, UVA is joined by the University of Missouri, the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of California, Los Angeles.

The vast amount of information collected as part of the project so far has poised the UVA team to make “unprecedented” advances, Yan reports. He and his multi-disciplinary team will employ advanced computer algorithms to sift through the heaps of data to identify specific molecules to study. They will then conduct state-of-the-art research in lab mice using gene editing, combined with a wide range of functional assessment, including muscle, cardiac, metabolic and cognitive/mental functions. This will let them determine the effects the molecules have and lay a foundation for doctors to harness the molecules to benefit human health in the future.

Yan’s team will work closely with colleagues at Stanford, who will conduct advanced “multiomics” analyses, meaning they will bring together data on genes, cellular proteins and much more to obtain a more holistic understanding of exercise’s benefits to the body.

UVA’s research team includes Yan, of the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center and the Departments of Medicine, Pharmacology and Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics; Wenhao Xu, PhD, of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology; Chongzhi Zang, PhD, of UVA’s Center for Public Health Genomics, the Department of Public Health Sciences and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics; Matthew Wolf, MD, PhD, of the Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center; Thurl Harris, PhD, of the Department of Pharmacology; and Alban Gaultier, PhD, and John Lukens, PhD, both part of UVA’s Department of Neuroscience and the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG).

“It is well known that exercise is one of the best treatments for mood disorders,” Gaultier said. “We are excited to test the group discoveries using animal models of anxiety and depression.”

“This is an exciting opportunity for team science,” Zang said. “I am happy to work with colleagues at UVA and across the country and use data-science approaches to unravel the complex molecular effects of exercise.”

UVA’s effort has received almost a half-million dollars in backing from the NIH’s fund for MoTrPAC’s research.

“Our research team encompasses exceptional talents. The collective wisdom and expertise of the team at UVA and MoTrPAC will allow us to reach a level that we would not be able to reach by an individual,” Yan said. “It is an unprecedented opportunity in our lifetime to tackle this incredibly important question to mankind.”

4 Tips For Ambitious Young Women’s Careers

The COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a double whammy for young women eager to launch their careers.

Young people in general have had their job searches stymied by the recession. Meanwhile, women of all ages have seen their careers impacted negatively more than men by the events of 2020.

But despite the challenges, there is hope for ambitious young women just starting out who want to make a mark, even in male-centric industries, says Deborah Fairchild, president of Nashville-based VEVA Sound (www.vevasound.com), which verifies and archives projects for clients in the music industry.

“That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy,” she says. “But if you can avoid becoming discouraged, and can face the world with firm determination, the opportunities will be there.”

Fairchild, who started her career with VEVA Sound as an archival engineer in 2004 and rose to lead the company in all facets of the business, has succeeded in an industry in which women are still underrepresented.

Just as an example, a study released in 2019 by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative looked at 700 popular songs and found that women accounted for only 21.7% of artists, 12.5% of songwriters, and 2.7% of producers.

Fairchild understands the challenges today’s young women face, and she offers a few tips for those who are just now launching their careers and hope to move up in their organizations:

  • Be prepared to clean toilets. This could be viewed metaphorically, but in Fairchild’s case it was also literal. “When I started as an intern at a studio, I did everything they asked – even clean toilets,” she says. “To pursue a professional career in the music industry, you have to be prepared to pay your dues, starting at the bottom and working your way up. I imagine that’s true for a lot of other industries as well.”
  • Learn from everyone. Formal education is great, and it’s wonderful to have a college degree, but once you’re on the job you will discover how much more there is to learn from watching and listening to other people, Fairchild says. Just about anyone in an organization – from the lowest-paid employee to the CEO – has skills or knowledge they can share with you that will prove useful in your career journey. “Whenever you meet someone,” she says, “always assume they have something to teach you until they prove they don’t.”
  • Networking is a key, but not the key. Who you know is important. So is what you know. “A strong network will give you opportunities,” Fairchild says, “but your knowledge and capabilities will be what give you a long-lasting career.”
  • Know when to pivot. At every stage of your career, stay sensitive to when it’s time to pivot, Fairchild says. “The interesting thing about the music industry is that some things take generations to change, while others change on a dime,” she says. “The ability to discern when to move on or when to double down will set you apart.”

“The pandemic has made things tough for those just trying to launch a career, which means it’s more important than ever to stay positive and persevere,” Fairchild says. “Grab the opportunities that are there, and then make the most of them.”
