Kruse GWS Auctions’ World Record

The world-record-breaking auction house, Kruse GWS Auctions, specializing in entertainment memorabilia, fine jewelry, iconic fashion accessories, Royal artifacts, antiques and collectibles, has announced another world record. On Saturday, December 5, 2020, the Oscar-nominated actress Melanie Griffith’s 48.00ctw Diamond, 8.5mm Pearl and Solid Platinum Pair of Antique Bracelets from her mother, Tippi Hedren, sold for $156,250 during the “Billionaire’s Estate & Royal Auction” event. The final bid marks the highest price paid for Tiffany & Co. jewelry at auction.

The pair of solid platinum, diamond and pearl antique bracelets personally owned by film star Melanie Griffith come with quintessential Hollywood provenance of having been gifted to her by her mother, iconic Hollywood actress Tippi Hedren, who famously won a Golden Globe Award for her iconic role in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” The bracelets are collectively embellished with approximately 48ctw round and old European cut fiery white diamonds and are lined with eight 8.5mm pearls each. The bracelets were sold with a personal letter from Griffith’s famous mother and are housed in a fitted box. The bracelets measure 7” in length and 2.15” wide and are marked Tiffany & Co.

“Melanie Griffith is a true American fashion and film icon. These bracelets are so exquisite, our auction house recognized immediately they are fine art in the form of fine jewelry and we were proud to set a world record with their sale,” said Dame Brigitte Kruse. “They represent the highest level of Americana; being made at the peak of craftsmanship by iconic American jewelry company Tiffany & Co. and being gifted from iconic American actress Tippi Hendren to her daughter, fellow iconic American actress Melanie Griffith. Kruse GWS Auctions was thrilled to be trusted with such a remarkable opportunity. The sale of the beautiful Diamond and Platinum bracelet secured a new world record as well as a placement in a museum.”

REEBOK’S “I3 MOTORSPORTS” CAMPAIGN

Today, Reebok officially unveils its highly anticipated “Street Sleigh” footwear and apparel collection, championed by moto-inspired takes on the brand’s iconic retro footwear models: the Question Mid and new Classic Leather Legacy. Introducing the brand’s “I3 Motorsports” narrative, which highlights Reebok’s relationship to bike life through the lens of its original rough rider Allen Iverson, the “Street Sleigh” pack is available December 15, 2020 from Reebok.com, Foot Locker, Champs and Finish Line, among other local retailers.

With a history in motorsports sponsorship dating back to the mid-80s and the introduction of its racing-inspired Answer IV and I3 Apparel range in the early 00’s, Reebok – alongside cross-cultural icon Allen Iverson – helped introduce motorsports to the streets at the turn of the century. In fact, Reebok’s vibrant and overbranded I3 Apparel line is often recognized as one of the earliest and most important crossovers between streetwear and sportswear. Today, like most team sports, inner city motorsport or “bike life”  is an important subculture in many cities, affording freedom of expression and a sense of community.

To celebrate this important subculture, Reebok released a photo series that documents riders from Atlanta, a prominent, thriving bike life city. The series [HERE] captures the pure freedom of expression, movement, style and prowess of these individuals and their wider community.

Tailored with a contemporary red and black holiday aesthetic nodding Iverson’s heart and style, the Question Mid “Street Sleigh” [imagery HERE] presents a material execution inspired by ATV’s and dirt bikes known for their high-contrast matte and gloss detailing. The Deep Black full-grain leather upper is accented with a patent synthetic toe and a Rich Red randing (mock welt) overlay that flows onto a glossed midsole for a truly eye-catching design. The silhouette effectively underlines the intersection of bike life and basketball in the inner city – two important and often overlapping subcultures in which Reebok remains rooted. Available in adult ($140, G57551), junior (GV7187), preschool (GV7184) and toddler (GV7182) sizing.

Riding alongside Question Mid is the new Classic Leather Legacy [imagery HERE] that puts its own twist on the “Street Sleigh” narrative. With a Rich Red leather upper seated atop a Deep Black rubber outsole and mixing glossy and matte overlays throughout, the Classic Leather Legacy “Street Sleigh” presents a clean and thoughtful symbol of bike life and Reebok heritage. Available in adult ($80, GZ2752) sizing.

“Street Sleigh” will also usher in the introductory release of Reebok’s new “Iverson Apparel” range, showcasing historic images captured by longtime A.I. photographer Gary Land, among other graphic designs. Apparel imagery can be found HERE.

Imagery of the Atlanta photo series, Question Mid and Classic Leather Legacy “Street Sleigh” and new “Iverson Apparel” range can be found HERE.

Finally, to tie a bow around the holiday release, professional basketball player Montrezl Harrell delivers “Street Sleigh” gifts to kids in this animation-style short film, which can be viewed HERE.

Reebok’s “Street Sleigh” footwear and apparel pack is available December 15, 2020 from Reebok.com, Foot Locker, Champs and Finish Line, among other local retailers. Fans can stay tuned for more from “I3 Motorsports” in Spring 2021.

Purdue Startup Fund Helps Move Technologies Across the World

A new funding option is helping provide support for Purdue-affiliated startups looking to gain traction and improve the world through innovative technologies.

The Purdue Startup Fund was started in 2020 by Purdue Ventures, an arm of the Purdue Foundry. The Foundry is an entrepreneurship and commercialization hub whose professionals help Purdue innovators create and grow startups.

“This fund is a partnership between the Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue University to maximize the university’s commitment to serving others through the commercialization of innovations,” said Wade Lange, vice president and chief entrepreneurial officer of the Purdue Research Foundation. “This is another crucial source of early-stage capital for our startups.”

The Purdue Startup Fund is designed to provide support for startups across all industries. Four startups have been selected so far for funding:

  • Umoja Biopharma – a startup focused on drugs using a patient’s own immune cells to kill cancerous cells.
  • Novosteo – a company that is developing an injectable drug to accelerate bone fracture repair.
  • ClearBlade – an industry-leading Edge Computing software company.
  • GoGig Jobs – an anonymous professional networking platform.

“These startups were selected based on their potential to make an impact on the world

through their technologies,” said John Hanak, managing director of Purdue Ventures.

The Purdue Startup Fund was created to provide support for early-stage companies with direct ties to Purdue intellectual property, alumni or other university connections. Like the Foundry Investment Fund, the Purdue Startup Fund is a sidecar funding that requires the existence of a significant institutional investment in a startup against which it can match a percentage.

“PRF has a mission to support Purdue and take the research, technologies and other work done here to the world,” said Riley Gibb, director of business development for Purdue Ventures. “The Purdue Startup Fund is another strategic way for us to make that happen. Capital can be a scarce resource for startups, so we wanted to offer another option.”

Startups interested in learning more can contact Gibb directly at rtgibb@prf.org.

Purdue Ventures directs three other funds: Ag-Celerator, Elevate Purdue Foundry Fund, Foundry Investment Fund, along with the Purdue Angel Network.

The Purdue Foundry is managed by the Purdue Research Foundation, which received the 2019 Innovation and Economic Prosperity Universities Award for Place from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. In 2020, IPWatchdog Institute ranked Purdue third nationally in startup creation. How Women Can Overcome Music Industry Challenges

By Deborah Fairchild

If someone were to ask me how I managed to thrive in a male-dominated industry and rise to the position of president at VEVA Sound – and how other young women could similarly succeed – here would be my response:

For me, it has always been about focusing on the work and knowing that if you just do that, everything else will take care of itself. When something needs to happen, just get it done.

Get it done even if it seems like a menial task. Get it done even if there’s no immediate reward being dangled in front of you. And get it done even if there is no clear indication that what you’re doing will result in a promotion, a raise, or other good things happening somewhere down the road.

Putting in the time and effort doesn’t necessarily guarantee success in the music industry (and likely not in any industry). But success can’t happen without that time and effort.

This approach to the working world goes all the way back to my first studio internship. Whatever task was placed before me and needed to be accomplished, I would do it – right down to the unfulfilling but necessary job of cleaning the toilets. (And yes, I actually cleaned toilets. The music industry isn’t always a glamorous world.)

I think that I knew, even at a young age, that if I just kept my attention on the work at hand, and concentrated on what I was doing versus what everyone else was doing, success would find me.

That proved to be true, and this approach continues to pay dividends for me to this day – and maybe could do the same for young women who are probably much like I was several years back, cultivating dreams and ambitions.

In my case, I always loved music and I also had a technical mind. It was a matter of taking those two things and mixing them together, which is why I got my degree in audio engineering. Once I finished college, working as an archival engineer gave me a steady income and allowed me to be around music all day. The rest is history.

Of course, all of this still leaves the question of whether it Is more difficult for a woman than a man to achieve success in the music industry. Certainly, women are underrepresented in our industry, as they are in many others. To give you an idea of that underrepresentation, a study released in 2019 by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative looked at 700 popular songs. What that study found was that women accounted for only 21.7% of artists, 12.5% of songwriters, and 2.7% of producers.

I also can report that over the years I have encountered situations where a man could do or say one thing, but I know it would be unacceptable for me to do or say the same thing.

So, yes, a young woman with ambitions to enter our industry will face challenges, but those challenges shouldn’t deter you.

After all, the music business is hard for everyone – male or female. Breaking in is tough. Then navigating the business once you’re in is difficult. Finally, it can be extraordinarily challenging to continue to succeed in the business over time, even after you’ve had your initial success.

The key is to set aside any negative thoughts about all those challenges and focus on what you can control. Be determined to do the work and strive to learn everything you can from everyone you can.

People are fond of saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” That’s true only to a degree. Who you know may bring opportunities initially, but what you know gives you staying power in this business.

Ultimately, knowledge and determination have been the two most important factors in my success. They can be for others as well.

Exploring Japan’s National Parks

Japan is home to 34 national parks — from Hokkaido in the north to tropical Okinawa in the south — all of which boast incredibly diverse landscapes, climates and natural phenomena. All national parks in the country are managed through a region-centric natural park system meaning local residents, governments and private organizations come together to preserve the natural environment and maintain visitor facilities of each park. This is led through a variety of local initiatives including the annual nationwide Natural Parks Clean-up Day, to maintain parks and keep them trash-free, a Junior Park Ranger program which educates young people about the importance of these lands, and Green Worker programs that educate the community about nature preservation. Below are a few of Japan’s dreamiest national parks which offer incredible national attractions throughout the year.

Akan-Mashu National Park, Hokkaido Region

A beautiful snapshot of thousands of years of natural forces at work, the extraordinary landscape of Akan-Mashu has been molded by millennia of volcanic upheaval. Dotted with multiple serene caldera lakes, the park offers visitors guided canoe tours to quietly explore Lake Kussharo and Lake Akan, and row upstream along the Kushiro River while watching for local fauna. Because of the area’s volcanic activity, several hot springs are located throughout the area, including Kawayu Onsen and Akanko Onsen. The largest Ainu settlement is located in Akanko Onsen and travelers can learn about the indigenous group at the Ainu Theater Ikor. There, visitors can watch a traditional Ainu dance that has been designated as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Tohoku Region

A diverse landscape full of contrasting imagery, Towada-Hachimantai National Park’s ecosystem has been shaped by ancient volcanic activity and bitter winters, making it a premier destination for ski lovers. The park is split into two regions which both offer an incredible array of activities, including a boat tour of Lake Towada, snowshoe trekking to Oyunuma Pond, and hiking across the Yakehashiri Lava Flow. Mount Hakkoda also offers a variety of activities, including skiing, hiking and the Hakkoda Ropeway, an aerial lift line which gives travelers ease of access throughout the area’s mountain range and offers exquisite winterscape views of the land. After an incredibly long day of exploring the snow-covered landscapes of this park, the region has a variety of onsen towns for travelers to unwind and relax, such as Tsuta Onsen and Nyuto Onsen.

Nikko National Park, Kanto Region

A two-hour train ride from Tokyo, Nikko National Park offers a serene escape from the city. Along with its incredible diversity in landscapes, ranging from valleys to highlands and canyons, the national park is also home to many UNESCO Heritage sites including Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan-jinja Shrine and Rinno-ji Temple. For guided experiences, guests can try stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Chuzenji, cruise down the Kinugawa River in a gondola, hike to the secluded Sukkansawa Waterfall, and practice Zen meditation and waterfall purification rituals in Kirifuri Highland. However, travelers who prefer to go their own way will find no shortage of hiking trails and nature paths, including many that go through the Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Forest, the Numappara Marshland, and Mount Nikko-Shirane.

Daisen-Oki National Park, Chugoku Region

A massive area spanning three prefectures, mountains, forests, coastlands and islands makes up the Daisen-Oki National Park’s varied landscape. The region is so diverse in its geography that many stories from Japanese mythology were directly inspired by this park. In the Okinoshima Area, visitors can get incredible views of the coastline and the Oki Islands from Jodogaura Beach and take a walk along the coastline to see how it was sculpted by the sea and by ancient volcanic activity. Mount Sanbe and its surrounding areas are a great place to hike and the three ponds around the mountain provide an excellent opportunity to learn about marshland wildlife. The true crown jewel of the Daisen-Oki National Park is the Oki Islands Archipelago. Consisting of 180 islands created from volcanoes, the islands can be explored by boat, canoe or cruise with plenty of opportunities for snorkeling to meet oceanic fauna.

Aso-Kuju National Park, Kyushu Region

Filled with lush green fields, caldera lakes and towering mountains, Aso-Kuju National Park gives visitors a special place to relax. The landscape allows travelers to have unique experiences in the park, including paragliding around Mount Aso, horseback riding and a helicopter ride to see an active volcano. The Mount Aso area is home to the Aso Caldera, one of the largest calderas in the world and within its central crater is a bubbling acidic turquoise pool surrounded by a rocky area. Surrounding the caldera is the Kuju Plateau, a vast green field often used by farmers as a pasture for their livestock. Other natural attractions in the area include Kikuchi Gorge, which is home to various waterfalls and streams, Komatsu Jigoku, a natural fumarole zone near the volcano, and the Shirakawa Headspring, one of the water sources of the Shirakawa River.

Break into the Housing Market

In the mid-2000s, observers expected millennial homeowners to be few and far in between. This new generation faced stagnant wages, crippling debt issues, and an unfavorable market. Flash forward more than a decade later, and we see a different picture.

The Wall Street Journal notes, a wellspring of new buyers from the millennial market has carried the housing industry this year. Last year, this demographic represented more than half the new mortgages. By July 2019, they also made up 38% of homebuyers. Home ownership aspirations among millennials continue to grow even in 2020, thanks to low interest rates. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, also led to massive unemployment. Its impact on millennials’ finances will no doubt slow down demand from this market.

If you’ve a stable job and need a little more elbow room, now could be the best time to buy a home. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. And even if you had to put your house-hunting aspirations on hold, don’t fret. The first steps often begin long before you even look at the listings.

The Advantages of Home Ownership

There is no real answer to the classic rent or own debate. What works best for your situation will depend on your finances and lifestyle. Some people prefer the mobility offered by renting. Others love the stability provided by an owned home. When it comes to price, it’s a different ball game.

The longer you live somewhere, the more it makes financial sense to own the property. Fixed-rate mortgage payments have one big advantage over rent. You pay the same amount for the entirety of the mortgage. Rents, meanwhile, can rise over time. If rents rise too high, it might be cheaper to buy a house!

As a general rule, you can compare the costs of renting vs. owning by multiplying your rent by 200. This is the equivalent of staying in place for 16 years and three months. For instance, let’s assume your rent costs $1,500 a month. In 200 months’ time, you could’ve paid for a modest home worth $300,000. And this is already assuming that your rent stays the same.

Complicating factors include the median home price in your neighborhood. Renting might be justified if the houses in your neighborhood are too pricey. If you have the option of moving, then a cheaper home somewhere else might be more practical.

Refining Your Budget

Whoa, there. Close that tab and stop looking at house listings. Before you fall down that rabbit hole, let’s examine your budget. This much-needed reality check can help you make the right financial decisions. The last thing you want is repeat the same mistakes people made two decades before.

Your budget will play a key role in deciding when you can buy a home. How much mortgage can you fit into your regular budget today? Will your budget have room for savings afterward? Examine the costs of home ownership and compare them to your current needs. In the meantime, focus on pressing financial matters like emergency funds and debts. You must make these considerations before deciding to buy a home. While you wait, set aside as much money as you can for a down payment.

Defining Your Down

The down payment is among the most important expenses you’ll make in the homebuying process. It lowers your starting loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. Your LTV is the percentage of the home paid for by the mortgage and thus owned by your lender. For instance, if you paid a 10 percent down payment, your LTV ratio is 90 percent. The remaining 10 percent is your home equity, the amount you do own. The greater your starting home equity, the smaller the sum you need to borrow.

A sizeable down payment cuts down your expenses in other ways. You’ll also avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI). This is an extraneous fee slapped onto your mortgage payment to protect lenders from the risks of default. It does nothing to help you build equity!

By law, PMI payments stop after your LTV ratio reaches 78 percent. But why waste your money until then? Instead, avoid paying PMI altogether by having a down payment worth at least 20 percent of your home’s price. You can save more money by removing that one unnecessary cost.

Remember, prices are not static. Real estate markets often follow an upward curve. Be aggressive when saving and adjust your down payment goals. If you expect real estate to climb by 3 percent each year, plan accordingly. If your savings goal is 5 years away, aim to make 16 percent more than your target amount.

Analyzing Your Home Needs

It’s easy to get carried away with a dream home. But don’t buy into it easily. Choose a home based on meeting your immediate and anticipated needs.

The ideal home will vary from person to person. If you like to keep things simple and manageable, then a small home might be right for you. A standard, four-bedroom family home is good for the average nuclear family with two kids. Even if you don’t expect another child, the extra bedroom could serve a variety of purposes. It can be a guest bedroom, a room for your parents, or a home office. If you have or expect a big family, a bigger home is in order. If you love the countryside, a rural property might be the thing you’re looking for.

Home offices in particular have become important considerations for homebuyers. Thanks to the advent of telecommuting, millennials needn’t live close to the city center to work. Companies, including tech giants like Twitter, now recognize the advantages of remote work. This trend grew further in the wake of COVID-19 and may likely continue into the future. A home office keeps your professional and personal lives distinct when telecommuting.

While you can always go to cheaper suburban or rural areas to buy a bigger home, this isn’t always advisable. A long stressful commute to work can have adverse effects on both your health and your daily budget. And don’t think having “more house for your money” is a bargain. One UCLA study has found that most rooms in a standard American house were underused.

Mortgage Options

How much and how long you must pay for a house will vary. It’s natural for you to veer toward the smallest monthly payment option. You want a mortgage that fits snugly into your budget. But this choice comes with its own drawbacks. Loans calculate interest fees from the money you borrowed based on the rate and the term. The longer the term and the higher the rate, the greater the interest costs.

According to Freddie Mac, the most popular mortgage option has been the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. These have low, regular payments that are easy to fit into the regular budget. It has been around for nearly a century. But is the 30-year fixed mortgage all that it’s cracked up to be? Critics have claimed that this loan product has failed as a wealth building tool for working-class Americans. This is because the interest costs of a 30-year mortgage will always be high. Besides their long terms, they often have steeper rates.

Thus, aim for as short a term as you can afford. Although pricier each month, a 15-year mortgage can help you save more money in the long run.

Let’s look at one example. Suppose you bought a house worth $300,000 and are willing to pay a 20 percent ($60,000) down payment. You have two options for your $240,000 mortgage. One mortgage offered a 15-year term and 2.5 percent annual percentage rate (APR). The other offers a 30-year term but comes with 3.3 percent APR. The examples below do not include escrow payments like taxes and home insurance.Mortgage DetailsMortgage 1Mortgage 2Term15 Years30 YearsRate (APR)2.5%3.3%Monthly Principal & Interest$1,600.29$1,051.09Total Interest Paid$48,052.94$138,393.31

Although you saved $549.20 each month, you still spent $90,340.37 more on your mortgage’s interest.

Some low monthly payment options come with dire financial consequences. Adjustable-rate mortgages may have low minimum payments at first. But that payment does not reduce your mortgage’s principal. Because their rates change with the market, you’ll likely end up paying more in the future.

Other Ways to Save

There’s more than one way to save money on your mortgage. Because of the way mortgage interest is calculated, you can pay extra toward your principal to save money. This is an excellent and flexible way to reduce your lifetime interest costs if you cannot afford a higher monthly payment up front.

Here’s how it works. In the early days of a mortgage, most of your payments go toward paying interest. On your first payment, only a small part goes toward paying your principal balance. With each payment, your balance shrinks. This means less of your payment goes toward interest and more toward your principal. The cycle continues until your mortgage matures. Paying extra to your principal speeds up this process.

Let’s return to our 30-year example. Suppose, in the 3rd year, you begin paying an extra $100 per month. For this example, we used this extra payment calculator from MortgageCalculators.info.Mortgage DetailsOriginal PaymentExtra $100/ month on the 3rd yearMonthly Principal & Interest$1,051.09$1,151.09Pay-off Time30 years26 years 3 monthsTime Saved03 years 9 monthsTotal Interest$138,393.31$120,129.89Total Interest Savings0$18,263.42

In that span of time, you shaved off 3 years and 9 months from your loan term and saved about $18,263.42 in total interest charges. That’s money you can set aside for emergency funds, retirement, or other important expenses.

Another way you can save is through biweekly payments. This method takes advantage of a quirk in the calendar. There are about 52 weeks in a year and 26 biweekly periods. In effect, you’ve added an extra month to your payment plan. There are several ways to set up biweekly payments. You can discuss the matter with your lender or have a third party do it on your behalf. Both options come with pricey maintenance fees. The alternative is to pay the equivalent of one month’s payment at the end of the year.

Finally, you can refinance your mortgage. This involves paying down your existing mortgage balance with a new one that has more favorable payment terms. Refinancing to a shorter term or lower rate has the potential to save you even more money in the long run. CBS reports that U.S. homeowners can save $160 each month if they refinanced their mortgages. Indeed, many homeowners refinance when rates drop low enough.

Returning to our previous example, let’s look at how much you can save by refinancing. In this example, we’ll assume you’ve paid off 3 years’ worth of mortgage payments. From there, you refinanced to a 15-year term at the cost of $3,200. Your new APR is 2.7 percent. Here’s how much you can save:Mortgage DetailsCurrent PaymentRefinanced PaymentRemaining Mortgage Balance$225,221.50$225,221.50Rate/APR3.3%2.7%Monthly Principal and Interest$1,051.09$1,523.05Interest Due$115,332.99$48,927.27

By refinancing, you can save $63,205.16 in interest minus your closing costs. But to recoup the costs, you must stay in your current home for at least two years and two months. The up-front costs of refinancing make it an unwieldy option for many homeowners. Thus, refinancing is ideal for established homeowners who intend to stay in their homes long-term.

The Bottom Line

If you want to settle down, don’t wait until your rent goes up. While you save up for your down payment, it’s time to review your spending. Look for expenses you can remove to bolster your cash flow. Start by paying extra toward debt. Clearing your credit card bills and other debts serves a dual purpose. By paying extra toward your debts, you save money and increase your cash flow. Making regular, punctual debt payments also improves your credit rating. This will help you qualify for better interest rates when you look for a mortgage deal.

Look out for caveats like prepayment penalties in your mortgage contract. These punitive clauses punish home buyers for paying extra too early. If a prospective lender won’t remove these clauses, take your business elsewhere. If you’ve already signed on, don’t worry. Since 2014, prepayment penalties must only last three years by law.

As with all things worth doing, if you can afford to wait it out, do so. Great savings come to those who wait.
