Remembering Veterans During a Strained Time

Wednesday, November 11th marks the annual commemoration of veterans in the United States, aptly named Veterans Day. This year, in the unprecedented context of coronavirus, as well as intense political and social strife, the day takes on an additionally sacred context as a reminder of those who have served our country.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I. Congress then passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, with the day becoming a national holiday beginning in 1938. Similar to Memorial Day, which is an annual federal holiday in May, it celebrates veterans of the United States. However, the difference between them is that Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans, living and dead. Yet a particular focus is on those veterans still with us, who served their country with honor and distinction whether during war or peacetime.

Several countries have similar days commemorating their veterans that find their root in remembering World War I and World War II on or near November 11th. Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday. World War I, as arguably the most brutal conflict in human history on the soldiers, is a devastating reminder of why countries celebrate those who serve.

2020 is a particularly remarkable year as it marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, and the 30th anniversary of both the end of the Panama Invasion and the beginning of Desert Shield.

Veterans Day has been distinctly impacted by the coronavirus, still sweeping the nation especially in the Midwest. As such, celebrations and efforts of remembrance are being affected in large ways. Arlington National Cemetery, used to hosting hundreds of thousands of veterans, their families, and the families of veterans who have passed, has altered its yearly ceremony in context of the current pandemic. For the first time, it will be livestreamed, with certain areas closed off, and embracing social distancing and masked mandates. Furthermore, the beloved observance at Memorial Amphitheater has been closed off to the general public, yet the overall cemetery will remain open.

Yet it is no time to despair or to pause the nation’s respects. There are 18.2 milling living veterans who have served during wartime alive in the United States today, all deserving admiration.

Tuska Utopia combines a travel show with metal music

While music and travel industries are suffering from the lockdown and people around the globe have fewer opportunities to enjoy concerts and fulfil their wanderlust, Tuska Utopia offers a new way of experiencing both of these. The concept sees Finnish artists performing and audiences embarking on a journey to intriguing landscapes in the global home of heavy metal, from church ruins to disused gasometers.

Combining an entertaining travel show, one-of-a-kind metal concerts and state-of-the-art music video aesthetics, Tuska Utopia will receive its premiere this November. The concept is created and produced by the team behind Tuska Festival, the biggest metal festival in the Nordic region, and it takes audiences on a journey to some of the most exceptional landscapes in Finland. Each hour-long episode includes a concert, an interview with the artists and a tour of the location in the spirit of a travel show. Watch season 1 trailer here.

The first season comprises of three episodes. Industrial metal powerhouse Turmion Kätilöt will perform at the Suvilahti gasometer in Helsinki on 13 November, power metal band Battle Beast at a secret stone castle on 20 November, and cello metal sensations Apocalyptica at the church ruins in Pälkäne on 27 November. Tickets to all three episodes have already gone on sale.

Tuska Utopia is hosted by Samy Elbanna from the thrash metal band Lost Society and directed by Taku Kaskela, a household name behind many music videos and TV productions.

“The series takes the visuality of gigs to a whole new level. It was a real dream for a director like me to get the opportunity to create new utopian worlds through music and light design for soulscapes that are so familiar to us Finns,” Kaskela says.

“The power of Tuska Utopia stems from the curating between the artists and locations, which creates a story, a tension and a theme that connects all the concerts in the series. The name of the series itself acts as a kind of reading guide, as each episode reveals an actual existing place in the Finnish landscape, as well as a fantasy world created especially for the series,” adds Jenni Kääriäinen, Artistic Director of Tuska Utopia.

“This is not just a way to replace live concerts”

Tuska Utopia aims to offer unique experiences, as well as to create new opportunities between the fields of music and travel. While both industries are suffering from a worldwide lockdown, Tuska Utopia enables people to enjoy both activities in a new way.

“This is not just a way to replace live concerts now that so many events are on hold. We hope to succeed in creating a new crossover culture that I can easily see continuing along its own path also after the crisis is over,” says Eeka Mäkynen, Executive Producer of Tuska Utopia.

The artists featured in the programme all have well-established global fan bases, so the English-language series is expected to attract interest around the world.

“Finland has already been called the global home of heavy metal, with more metal bands per capita than anywhere else in the world, and this country definitely has a strange appeal. Tuska Utopia is a dive into the deep end of the Finnish metal soulscape, a place where your feet can no longer touch the bottom. Welcome along!” Mäkynen invites.

ReedPop Announces 2021 Dates for ECCC & C2E2

High Times x Oregon

High Times announced Monday its return to Oregon where more than 150 products will compete for the People’s Choice Cannabis Cup.

Consumers will be able to purchase the products and participate as judges in the competition from the safety of their own homes.

A portion of proceeds will also go toward the Cannabis Cares Wildfire Relief Fund, which helps support cannabis brands affected by the fires.

Originally founded in 1988 in Amsterdam, the High Times Cannabis Cup is the world’s most famous cannabis festival. Though the festival typically lasts two or three days, COVID-19 has pushed High Times to allow consumers to judge from home.

28 different strains will be available to try in a one ounce judging kit, then they will be ranked.

The judging kits are expected to sell out quickly, and they will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. The categories up for judgement include flower, pre-rolls, concentrates, vape pens and cartridges as well as two edible categories, gummies or candies and baked goods.

The kits are available in over two dozen of the state’s best products through retail partners like TJ’s Gardens on Eugene and Portland, Oregon Euphorics in Bend, Bahama Buds in Coos Bay, Top Crop in Ontario and Rogue Valley Cannabis in Medford.

High Times has also partnered with Oregon cannabis operator STEM Holdings, the owner of TJ’s Gardens and Yerba Buena Farms, to use more than 75 pounds of product during the competition.

Trevor Bauer x Lids

All-star Cincinnati Reds pitcher and 2020 Cy Young Award finalist Trevor Bauer has partnered with Lids, the leading sports retailer.

In the 25-year history of Lids, Bauer is the first MLB player to partner with the company. Lids will become the exclusive headwear retailer for Bauer.

Bauer caught attention for his personal merchandise and custom cleats during the 2020 baseball season, and he will unveil several limited-edition custom hats, shirts and customizations throughout the year, all of which will be available nationwide.

Bauer said he has been a Lids customer for many years.

“As I’ve become more invested in design and branding in recent years, the opportunity to collaborate with such an iconic retailer, especially as its first MLB athlete partner, is really meaningful,” Bauer said.

Lawrence Berger, co-founder and partner at Ames Watson and Chairman of FanzzLids Holdings, said Bauer is equally impressive on and off the mound.

Bauer is the reigning MLBPA Players Choice NL Outstanding Pitcher and a finalist for the 2020 National League Cy Young Award, which will be announced Wednesday.

Bauer puts his season up against those of Jacob deGrom, who won the award in 2018 and 2019, and Yu Darvish, who debuted in 2012 with Bauer and is eyeing his first Cy Young Award, as well.

Bauer posted his career-best earned run average in 2020 of 1.73, second best in baseball only behind Cleveland Indians ace Shane Bieber. He won five games and anchored a Reds pitching staff that landed the seventh seed in the playoffs.

He also garnered attention for contributions to baseball as a whole with his self-titled YouTube channel and Momentum, an athlete-driven media company with the goal of connecting fans to the game.
