Q&A With Devault & BabyJake

Devault & BabyJake Release Double-Sided Singles ‘Tell Me’ & ‘Blue’.
Electronic deejay & producer Devault and rising star BabyJake have teamed together for double-sided dance singles titled ‘Blue’ & ‘Tell Me’ that are set to be released at midnight. The singles come fresh off a powerful year for both artists, as each released EP’s and collaborative singles in their respective fields. While Devault released a string of audio/visual experiences, most notably RUBY, and collaborations with Manila Killa and Griff Clawson, BabyJake teamed up with Dillon Francis for a small dance EP and debuted his first solo EP project ‘Don’t Give Me Problems, Give Me Wine.’
360 Magazine asked DEVAULT and BABY JAKE, who are also good friends, some questions about their collaboration.

Q&A WITH DEEJAY & PRODUCER DEVAULT AND MUSIC ARTIST BABY JAKE

How did you both get started in music? And when did you first meet?
Devault: I initially started DJ’ing around 12 years old when my older brother randomly brought home a small turntable set and I immediately fell in love. As the years went on and when I was around 18 years old, I decided to start producing, essentially with the mentality of making music that I couldn’t find in my library of current music. Making something exciting; and now we’re here. I first met Jake a few years ago through a mutual friend when he was visiting LA for one of the first times. He ended up crashing at my house for a period of time and we immediately connected.
BabyJake: I first started taking music seriously after I dropped out of college in 2016, but I’ve been flirting with it since I was 8 years old when I picked up a guitar for the first time. Sage (Devault) & I originally met through a mutual friend, Austin Tompkins, when I first arrived in LA. I ended up sleeping on Sage’s couch for 3 weeks, maybe longer, and we’ve been friends ever since.

How would you describe your friendship and the dynamic between you two, did you always had the plan to one day work together and make a song?
Devault: I think we have mutual respect for each other, as when we met we were both figuring out our own paths in the music scene. I think we’ve both evolved greatly as musicians and as people. We always had the desire to make music together, but couldn’t find the right timing. Luckily, covid was almost a blessing in disguise as it allowed us to jam together for a few days with no pressure and these songs came out of it.
BabyJake: Yeah for sure. We always wanted to do something together, we just needed to wait for a good time to do it. I’m sure we’ll make much more music together as well, I practically see Sage every other day.

Which music artists inspired you? Where did you find inspiration for the two songs ‘Tell Me’ and ‘Blue’?
Devault: Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, and Jamie XX are some of my biggest inspirations. Music that is immediately recognizable to them and them only and that has become a mantra of mine. For our songs, we wanted to just have fun really, get out of our comfort zone and just make genuine dance records, while still retaining our styles.
BabyJake: Honestly there are too many artists to count that inspire me. That being said, I think the inspiration for these songs was less about who we wanted it to sound like & more about what feeling we wanted to establish to the audience. Whatever that feeling is, I’d say we captured it.

What three words would you use to describe your sound?
Devault: Moody, Emotive, & Ethereal
BabyJake: Not sure what 3 words I’d use to describe the records… I’d say everything that comes from Devault is somewhat emotional & deep.

A lot has happened in the last two years for both of you. Baby Jake, you released your first EP and Devault, you did remixes for Rihanna & Maroon 5. What was your personal highlight?
Devault: My personal highlight was releasing my first EP ‘Stay’ in 2018. This felt like it was finally a moment to identify me as not just an electronic artist, but as a genuine musician who can paint an entire world.
BabyJake: My personal highlight was a deep album cut named “Anywhere.” Even though it didn’t do crazy numbers, the production & experience of recording a completely live song with a choir, organ, drums… you name it… was incredible. That was definitely a high I hadn’t experienced before.

What is the thing you missed most during lockdown?
Devault: Missing live shows dearly.
BabyJake: Live shows. I was supposed to be on tour so that’s a real bummer.

What other artists do you want to collaborate with in the future?
Devault: A dream would be working with Toro y Moi or Blood Orange.
BabyJake: Definitely want to keep working with Sage, also wouldn’t mind doing some more electronic features with some other talented producers. This is a hard question for me because I feel like collaborations just kind of happen with friends and/or artists you are close with. I never really force it or think about it, it just happens.

Finally, what’s next?
Devault: Next is my second vocal EP, it’s nearly done and looking to get it out at the beginning of next year. Very excited about it.
BabyJake: An album. Finally.
Their double-sided single ‘Tell Me’ and ‘Blue’ will be released tonight at midnight!!! You can download on all digital platforms and follow them on Instagram,@itsbabjake and @devaultmusic.

Cyn releases "Uh Oh" for Promising Young Women as announced by 360 MAGAZINE.

Cyn – “Uh Oh”

Today, Cyn released “Uh Oh,” one of two original tracks she wrote and recorded for the Promising Young Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Listen to the darkly infectious song HERE. “Uh Oh” is one of two tracks from the soundtrack that Variety highlighted in a recent feature about possible contenders for Best Original Song honors at the Oscars.

Cyn talks about writing “Uh Oh” in this feature, which accompanied Refinery29’s exclusive premiere of the song earlier today. She worked closely with the film’s director and writer, Emerald Fennell, and song co-writers Matias Moraand Mia Minichiello, to create the music needed for a particular scene. Cyn, who performed “Uh Oh” at the 2020 Sundance ASCAP Music Café, tells Refinery29, “Working with Emerald was seamless. She sent me an email with lyric ideas and had a very clear idea of how the song should relate to the movie. The lyric ‘if it happened to you, what would you do?’ was taken directly from Emerald’s notes. Thank goodness she had such a confident idea of how the song should feel – that always helps!” Fennell served as Executive Soundtrack Producer, teaming up with music supervisor Sue Jacobs and Capitol Records.

“Drinks,” Cyn’s other contribution to the soundtrack, has amassed over 20 million global streams since its release earlier this year. Billie Eilish added it to her Apple Music radio show, “me & dad radio,” and Rolling Stone hailed it as a “Song You Need To Know.” “The Mixed Drinks Collection” features the stripped version of “Drinks”and remixes from quartet of renowned producers, all female – MNDR, NERVO, Uffie, and Ladyhawke. Cyn, who is signed to Katy Perry’s Unsub Records, has earned praise from Billboard for her “crisp, spirited pop sound carried by her timeless, all-embracing voice and literary lyrics.”

Focus Features will release the Sundance hit Promising Young Woman on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020 in theaters domestically. IndieWire noted, “The film is filled with inspired soundtrack choices – a strings-heavy take on Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ teases before it reveals itself at the perfect moment, and an amusing use of an ‘It’s Raining Men’ cover sells Fennell’s pitch-black sense of humor early on.” Idolator said, “As for the soundtrack, there’s so much to love” while The Daily Beast hails it as “glorious.” Vice observed, “[Promising Young Woman] expertly uses femme pop songs to underscore its critically acclaimed twisted tale of trauma and revenge.” View the trailer, which features Anthony Willis’ orchestral arrangement of “Toxic,” HERE.

Those who pre-order the 16-track collection in digital format will instantly receive “Uh Oh” and “Drinks” plus DeathbyRomy’s take on The Weather Girls 1982 hit “It’s Raining Men” and Donna Missal’s interpretation ofCigarettes After Sex’s 2012 breakthrough single,  “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby.”

The soundtrack also features previously unreleased tracks from MUNA and BLESSUS plus Carmen DeLeon’s cover of the Gerry Goffin-Carole King penned “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss”). Charli XCX’s “Boys,” Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind,” Sky Ferreira’s “Downhill Lullaby” and Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” are among the previously released tracks that Fennell employs to subvert the audience’s expectations over the course of the film. Other featured artists include Maya B and Lily & Madeleine.

Synopsis

From visionary director Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) comes a delicious new take on revenge. Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman… until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future.  But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night.  Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

Premiering to huge acclaim in Sundance earlier this year, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN is directed and written by Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) and stars Academy Award®-nominee Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham along with an ensemble cast that includes Laverne Cox, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Max Greenfield, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chris Lowell, Sam Richardson, Molly Shannon, and Clancy Brown.  Fennell produced along with Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara for LuckyChap Entertainment and Ben Browning and Ashley Fox for FilmNation Entertainment.

10-year-old Elijah Machado wins Rolls-Royce design competition as announced by 360 MAGAZINE.

Elijah Mercado, 10, Wins Rolls-Royce Design Competition

A talented 10-year-old boy from Dallas was selected as the American winner of the Rolls-Royce Young Designer Competition for children ages 16 and under. Launched in April as a way for kids to express their creativity amid the pandemic, the international Rolls-Royce Young Designer Competition attracted more than 5,000 entries from more than 80 countries.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Dallas selected Elijah Machado, 10, of Dallas from all the North American entries submitted.  Elijah described his Rolls-Royce as a vehicle that can go 800 mph and would last 5.9 million miles. “The car has rocket boosters that make the car go 1,000 mph,” said Elijah Machado. “The car will have an auto pilot button and an eject button. The car will have TVs behind the seats with video games and remotes.”

Automotive artist Stephen Selzer surprised Elijah with a custom piece of art based on his entry to the competition. Elijah also received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the luxury dealership, enjoy his first ride in a Rolls-Royce and meet with the team at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Dallas who helped him design his dream Rolls-Royce.

“When kids were forced to stay home earlier this year as a result of the global pandemic, Rolls-Royce launched this competition to encourage and inspire the next generation,” said Heath Strayhan, general manager of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Dallas. “It was thrilling to see kids around the world participate, especially from right here in Texas.”

Launched in April as lockdown conditions were imposed across the globe, the competition proved an instant success; so much so, the original deadline for entries was extended. Asked only to design their ‘dream Rolls-Royce of the future’, children had complete creative freedom, allowing them to develop ideas of astonishing scope, complexity and vision far beyond the realms of automotive design.

With no rules or specified judging criteria to constrain them, children were able to let their imagination run free, creating designs of extraordinary richness, creativity and diversity.

“The most important thing I’ve learned from this competition is that whatever our circumstances, we have the power to create amazing things, because our imagination is always free to fly,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “I hope the children who took part will recognize this, too, and that it will be something positive they can take from their pandemic experience.”

LAUREN AUDER SHARES NEW SINGLE ANIMAL

A real talent for creating music that expertly walks the line between boundless and bracingly intimate… -The FADER

Lauren Auder has been slowly building a pop world of her own a wide landscape of lush rolling orchestral layers and soft trickling piano, cut through by Auder’s slow, deliberate verses. -Consequence of Sound

Elegant baroque-pop an air of thrilling melodrama them. Meet Lauren Auder complex and poetic deep baritone, genre-bending sound, and rich lyricism. -Office

Subdued, world-weary stringsߪutterly ethereal. -Billboard

Today, singer/songwriter Lauren Auder releases her epic and exhilarating new single Animal via True Panther and Harvest Records. Made with up-and-coming producer mmph, Animal showcases the lavishly inventive sound and commanding vocal presence that have made Auder one of 2020’s most exciting breakout artists.

Download/stream Animal HERE.

Although it unfolds with a powerful splendor, Animal first began as an a cappella voice memo saved on Auder’s phone, its lyrics both self-effacing and defiant. In her collaboration with mmph (a classically trained musician known for his orchestration work on David Byrne’s American Utopia), Auder transformed her raw outpouring into a piano-driven ballad that perfectly spotlights her kaleidoscopic sensibilities. To that end, Animal mines inspiration from the moody volatility of seminal industrial acts like Current 93 while also revealing the more timeless elements of her musicality (I’m a sucker for a classic piano song, she points out).

Animal serves as the follow-up to Auder’s recent single Quiet, a stormy and spellbinding track that premiered in early October, hailed by Idolator as a deceptively majestic love song. The track was written by Auder and produced by Danny L Harle (Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, Superfruit). Originally from Albi (a town in Southwestern France), Auder creates emotionally potent and transportive pop music inspired by everything from hip-hop to post-rock to classical. With a sound akin to Scott Walker singing Lorde songs, Auder’s distinct aesthetic was first glimpsed on her critically lauded 2018 debut EP Who Carry’s You. Released in March 2020, her sophomore EP two caves in delivered the widely adored singles june 14th and meek, two tracks centered on Auder’s intricate lyricism and mesmerizing vocals.

With her live experience including international tours with Christine and the Queens and Amen Dunes, Auder has also emerged as a captivating new presence in the fashion world, working for the likes of Gucci and being tapped as the face for Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Celine in 2018.

Listen to Animal above, and stay tuned for more from Lauren Auder coming soon.
