Elton John – I Can’t Go On Living Without You

I Can’t Go On Living Without You has been unveiled to celebrate the release of Elton John’s Jewel Box, released today via UMe. Multiple GRAMMY winner Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Shawn Mendes, Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber) has given the unreleased 1968 mix – one of the many gems of Jewel Box – a 2020 polish in time to celebrate one of the most eagerly awaited releases of the year. Watch Here.

The 1968 original captures the sound of a long-lost swinging London and typified the writing-to-order pop that Elton John and Bernie Taupin had been contracted to Dick James Music to deliver for other artists to cover.

Written and recorded at DJM studios in Central London in Spring 1968, “I Can’t Go On Living Without You” was selected for consideration for the UK’s Eurovision Song Contest entry the following year. Six songs were chosen for the public vote for Lulu to take the winner forward to the competition’s final in Madrid that March. To get to the final six for songwriters of that day was prestigious enough. Another aspiring team – Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber – submitted a song entitled “Try It And See,” which, according to Rice, didn’t even make the final 50. A year or so later, new lyrics were provided, and it became “Herod’s Song” in Jesus Christ Superstar.

“I Can’t Go On Living Without You” was sung by Lulu on her BBC1 primetime show Happening For Lulu on Saturday, February 1, 1969. “Back then, Eurovision wasn’t quite the orgy of embarrassment it is now, but still, it wasn’t like Pink Floyd, and Soft Machine were queuing up to get involved,” Elton wrote in his acclaimed, best selling memoir Me. In fact, he revealed, although credited to Bernie, he had written the lyrics by himself. On the following Monday, the composing team Bill Martin and Phil Coulter (who had written the previous year’s Eurovision entry,  Congratulations) reviewed I Can’t Go On Living Without You, the fourth of the six contenders, in the Daily Express. Martin wrote, “I strained my ears to hear a non-existent melody coupled with a pathetic lyric.” Coulter added, “a very unimaginative title for what is just a dull and uninteresting song.” Elton wrote in his diary on Monday, February 3: “Went into the office. General reaction to Lulu – not very good.”

When the final result came through a fortnight later, the song had come sixth in the audience poll. Out of six. It had received 5087 votes. Ironically, it was beaten into last place by a song called Are You Ready For Love? (but not the one Elton was to take to No. 1 in 2003). The song that Lulu did take forward, “Boom Bang-A-Bang,” garnered 56476 votes.

Although Lulu was to be the joint winner of Eurovision that year, “I Can’t Go On Living Without You” did attract some cover versions; Cilla Black recorded it on her 1970 album, Sweet Inspiration; Pickettywitch singer Polly Brown released it on the flip side of “So In Love” in 1973, and Sandie Shaw’s version belatedly came out in 2004.

Now it’s time to hear the Elton original for the first time. ‘I Can’t Go On Living Without You’ is three fabulous minutes of the zingy easy listening pop of the day, with a catchy chorus and a memorable hook.

The track is accompanied by a new lyric video from Ladybug Studios where, like the track itself, the song’s swingin’ 60s vintage will be given a fresh and contemporary twist. It features images of Elton and Bernie from the period.

Elton: Jewel Box is available now as deluxe 8CD and 9LP box sets, standalone 4LP, 3LP, and 2LP breakouts. On streaming services, we’re celebrating its wealth of rarities, deep cuts, and B-sides via a series of regular three-song batches, culminating with the complete ‘Jewel Box’ appearing, in full, in March for Elton’s 75th birthday.

Timmy Trumpet & Gabry Ponte – Mad World

Today, multi-platinum DJ, producer and live instrumentalist, Timmy Trumpet unleashes his new single, “Mad World,” in collaboration with Grammy nominated Italian DJ/producer Gabry Ponte.

Almost two decades since Michael Andrews and Gary Jules crafted “Mad World” into a UK #1 smash-hit, Timmy & Gabry deliver a reimagining of a masterpiece, custom made for a time in history where the title has never been more fitting.

“I was in the middle of a 30-date U.S tour with Steve Aoki when global pandemic alarm bells rang out” says Timmy. “One night we were playing to 10,000, the next day I’m on a flight home to Australia. Since then I’ve focused on making music that speaks to our experiences of now. Mad World is timeless and timely. Its’ magic deserves to be shared with another generation and it was an honor to work with Gabry on bringing a new sound to an iconic composition.”

The music video was filmed in the heart and at the height of 2020’s narrative – the streets of Philadelphia. It was shot the day after the US election amidst protests, unrest and with the power of the free world hanging in the balance. This stunning story of an emotional rollercoaster captures the journey of a young woman with hopes of a new year that could have been.

The music video directed by Shaun David Barker & Matt Henry was the second time the film makers have worked with Timmy Trumpet this year. The trio teamed up on “Diamonds” Timmy’s first track released after lockdown, which was the first music video to be entirely shot and directed in isolation.

“We wanted to tell a story that embodies the constant frustration, the push and pull, the ups and downs of everyday life as we’ve come to know it. The logistics of shooting a music video during a pandemic were unbelievably challenging. Add full street closures and health, safety and security concerns with political turmoil, it was just the right mix of madness and resilience” says director, Shaun David Barker.

Timmy has shot to global stardom in the electronic music scene over the past few years headlining festivals like EDC, Creamfields and Tomorrowland, and was just voted the #10 DJ in the world in the DJ Mag Top 100. He first began touring in the US in 2014 when his breakout hit ‘Freaks’ went Gold, and globally reigned in more than half a billion streams. It was only fitting that Timmy chose to continue the Mad World story in the epicenter of turbulent times, a place he holds dear to his heart.

Gabry Ponte is one of the influential producers in electronic music with a career spanning three decades. His debut production as part of the group Eiffel 65 was “Blue (Da ba dee)” – the global smash that would sell over 8 million copies. Last summer Gabry teamed up with LUM!X to release “Monster” which has surpassed more than 150 Million streams and has been certified platinum in Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria.

“Mad World” is also the lead single from Timmy’s upcoming debut artist album of the same name due to hit streaming platforms December 4.

“Mad World” is available now via Smash The House on digital streaming platforms HERE.

Upon arrival, guests will valet their cars, take a private elevator to the rooftop, check in, have a photo-op, and then are escorted to the bar area for cocktails, which will include a welcome toast with a shot of Bullet Bourbon. Afterwards, guests will be entertained by a short story about The Gastro Garage and then devour their first delicious course, which will be the start of this multi-sensory experience. For the next stop, guests will be led by their Mechanics to private tables with spectacular views of the city, where they will dine on five more courses cooked table-side along with a signature cocktail. Then, upon completion of the savory course items, guests will next be guided to an additional cabana by their Mechanic where they will finish the evening with two dessert courses cooked in front of them as they look out onto the magical city lights of L.A

Diwali 2020

By: Elle Grant

Over the course of mid-November, the annual five-day festival, Diwali, took place from November 12th to November 16th. Known as the festival of lights, for those who follow Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, major religions in South Asia, this is one of the most important religious festivals of the year. It lasts the aforementioned five days, from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month Ashvina to the second day of the light half of the lunar month Karttika. (the corresponding dates in the Gregorian calendar usually fall in late October and November).

Diwali as a festival has deep meaning within the communities it is celebrated. Its name comes from the Sanskrit term dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” In turn, the lighting of Diwali candles is an essential part of the celebration. The festival generally symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. In this context, light symbolizes knowledge and wisdom, while darkness is a symbol for all negative forces including wickedness, destruction, violence, lust, envy, injustice, greed, oppression and suffering. The third day of Diwali is celebrated on Saturday, November 14, 2020. While it is widely celebrated by a vast proportion of the world’s population, precisely how Diwali is celebrated varies by culture.

Across, South Asia, different regions celebrate different deities first and foremost with the festival. Among Hindus the most widespread custom is the lighting of diyas (small earthenware lamps filled with oil) on the night of the new moon to invite the presence of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. In Bengal the goddess Kali is worshipped with the event. In North India the festival additionally celebrates the royal homecoming of Rama to the city of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the 10-headed king of the demons, thus connecting the festival with the holiday of Dussehra. In South India the festival marks Krishna’s defeat of the demon Narakasura. The celebration of Diwali offers just a glimpse into how culture varies across South Asia.

Homes of those who celebrate reflect the importance of the day. Many begin the holiday with a deep cleaning of their home, from top to bottom. Floors inside and out are covered with rangoli, consisting of elaborate designs made of colored rice, sand, or flower petals. The doors and windows of houses are kept open in the hope that Lakshmi will find her way inside and bless the residents with wealth and success. Other ways Diwali is celebrated include visiting loved ones, exchanging gifts, wearing new clothes, feasting, feeding the poor, and setting off fireworks. Delicious food is a large part of the celebration. Yet how this holiday is specifically celebrated this year has been affected by the ongoing global pandemic caused by the spread of COVID-19.

Before Diwali even took place, experts warned of the danger of gathering for the event, in the vein of warnings being made for the coming holidays of Christmas and Hannukah for Christian and Jewish populations of the world. International lockdowns in places like Europe have put a damper on the plans of many. Yet many are finding ways around the restriction of movement and celebration; many are planning calls with families across different continents, in which there will be singing, games, and tasty foods shared through screens. Some say it has even brought them closer as a family.

Like many holidays, Diwali assuredly looks different this year. Yet the resilience displayed by those celebrating, to find a way to connect with family and friends during this special spiritual time, again reflects some of the best of human ingenuity during the coronavirus pandemic.

DREAMERS DROP VIDEO FOR “TRUE CRIME”

Just in time for Friday the 13th, cosmic-rock band DREAMERS have released a deliciously dark animated video for their new track, True Crime ft. DeathbyRomy. The video is a blend of live-action, stop-motion, 2D and 3D animation, by Burton Booz. This innovative clip perfectly captures the song’s story of love and betrayal set in the dark magic of New Orleans. Watch the video now HERE.

“The band was shot on a green screen so we could capture their performance. We then cut out their heads and placed them on 2D bodies that were made by mashing up photographs and illustrations like collage-art,” said director Jared Asher Harris when describing the creative process.

“The bodies were then rigged and animated in After Effects. The skeletons and sets were all hand-modeled and animated in 3D,” Harris continued. “When the animation was finished, we outputted the video as one giant clip and cut it up as though it were a live-action music video with trippy quick cuts.”

True Crime ft. DeathbyRomy was co-written by DREAMERS, DeathbyRomy, Joyway’s Dan Armbruster, and Sir Sly’s Jason Suwito and co-produced by Armbruster and Suwito. The track was inspired by the decadent city of New Orleans and the band’s chance encounter with a male witch, who taught the trio incantations. Lead singer Nick Wold describes their inspiration as “the terrible things the crimes that we can do to each other in the name of love.”

True Crime ft. DeathByRomy and is the follow-up to Heat Seeker ft. grandson and the band’s top ten alternatives hit Die Happy.

POWFU –  “when the hospital was my home” feat. Rxseboy

Rounding out an incredibly life-changing year, lo-fi rapper/singer Powfu is treating fans with his brand new track “when the hospital was my home” today via Columbia Records. The lyrically vivid song was heavily inspired by the 2019 romantic drama film 5 Feet Apart. Listen HERE

Powfu has also revealed that he is releasing a new 8-track EP, some boring love stories pt. 5, next Friday, November 20 via Columbia Records. The EP is a continuation of parts 1-4 that Powfu has steadily been releasing over the last 2 years.

Speaking on the song, Powfu explains: “The movie inspired me to write a song from the perspective of someone living in a hospital. When I played it for my dad, he broke down and started crying when he heard the lyrics: ‘I dont wanna let go when we hug, one thing worse than dying is losing who you love’. I knew at that point that this was something special.”

The new music comes hot on the heels of Powfu’s massive 2020 hit song “death bed (coffee for your head)” featuring beabadoobee officially being certified Double Platinum with over 2 BILLION worldwide streams. The addictive hit song blasted Powfu to the forefront of the music scene this year, positioning him as one of the main pioneers bringing the lo-fi genre to the mainstream. The song got its first big push on TikTok, where it currently has over 6 MILLION clips using the sound.

Stay tuned next week for some boring love stories pt. 5.

Ten European teams selected for the Helsinki Energy challenge

Ten European teams selected for Helsinki Energy Challenge

Ten teams have been selected for the final phase of the Helsinki Energy Challenge. The finalist teams highlight the international and interdisciplinary nature of the participants. They have a wide variety of proposals for how Helsinki can phase out the use of coal for heat production in the most sustainable way possible by 2029. Next, the competition is advancing into the co-creation phase.

In the 252 teams taking part in the Helsinki Energy Challenge, there were 1,528 experts and innovators from across the globe designing potential solutions to the challenge of decarbonising the heating of Helsinki.

The ten proposals selected to advance consist of a diverse set of solutions that have significant potential for further development in the coming phase. Many of the suggested solutions are also scalable to the needs of other cities. Included in the race are several wide-ranging comprehensive solutions, some of which find new ways to combine technologies that are already in use. There are also competition entries that include entirely new technologies. Among the solutions are new approaches to heat storage and transfer, waste heat utilization, energy consumption control and consumer activation. Included are also some non-technological innovations that enable the realisation of future sustainable solutions and the combination of centralised and decentralised solutions.

“I launched the Helsinki Energy Challenge to bring the world’s best talent together to consider solutions to Helsinki’s heating challenge. The competition has sparked conversation around the topic on a global scale. It has succeeded in combining wide-ranging international expertise and ambitious problem solving, and we are certain that this collision of different competences will generate new ways of thinking in the future as well. Our challenge competition has strong international support from different organizations and from several of my fellow Mayors, and we will be working together to make sure the solutions that are created are put to use as broadly as possible. Every city must do their part in the fight against global climate change,” says Mayor of Helsinki Jan Vapaavuori.

The teams are interdisciplinary and international

The teams that have advanced to the final phase are each made up of 3–20 members and together include 85 experts from a diverse set of fields. The finalists include, and are primarily made up of combinations of, start-ups, large companies, research institutes and universities, as well as international consortia made up of various companies.

The finalist teams represent excellence and a credible combination of various expertise, making them capable of elevating their competing proposals to the next level in the final phase of the competition.

The finalist teams are all European. The selected teams represent organizations from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Austria and France. Most of the teams include experts and organizations from more than one country.

“When you consider that we received such a large number of proposals and that the competing teams included 1,528 experts from different backgrounds and countries around the world, it becomes clear that the competition includes a very wide range of different solutions. Evaluating these solutions has been more difficult than expected. However, the hard part is now behind us, and the competition is advancing to the next, even more interesting phase.Currently, the teams’ solutions are only provisional proposals, and each team will receive support and additional information to further develop their proposal in the co-creation phase. We are looking forward to seeing what the finalist teams’ final proposals will look like. They have some impressive and diverse expertise on display, so we are going in with high expectations,” says Project Director Laura Uuttu-Deschryvere.

The co-creation phase begins

The teams selected for the finals are invited to the co-creation phase, during which they will receive support for further development of their solution and additional information to enable them to tailor their idea to the context of Helsinki. At the centre of the co-creation phase is the boot camp in December.

An international panel of judges will evaluate the final competition proposals at the beginning of 2021, and the winner of the competition will be announced in March 2021. The proposals will be evaluated on the basis of their climate impact, impact on natural resources, cost impact, implementation schedule and feasibility, security of supply and capacity. The City of Helsinki has committed to openly sharing the lessons and results of the competition to allow other cities to use them in their own climate work.

Proposals submitted in the first phase of the competition included also a large variety of other ideas and concepts that did not reach the finals but which the City of Helsinki intends to highlight during the competition process too. The 252 submissions included ideas in which solving the challenge is “gamified”, new solutions for the utilization of different heat sources, new market and business models, heat storage solutions, decentralized heat production models, new technologies such as small modular reactors (SMR), and hydrogen based solutions.

Cities have a key role – the COVID-19 pandemic will not stop Helsinki’s climate work

Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, and cities have a decisive role in mitigating it. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Helsinki keeps investing heavily in its climate work. The climate crisis has not been cancelled and the City of Helsinki is working its way towards a carbon neutral Helsinki by 2035. At the moment, more than half of Helsinki’s direct carbon dioxide emissions originate from heating the city. This is why finding a sustainable heating solution will have a critical impact on achieving the City’s carbon neutrality goal. Currently, more than half of Helsinki’s heating energy is produced with coal, the use of which will have to stop by 2029. Helsinki wants to find long-term sustainable solutions, which is why it does not want to replace the use of coal with biomass-fired production.

Helsinki wants to find long-term sustainable solutions to heat the city in the future and to act as a platform for new and innovative solutions that also other cities around the world can benefit from. For this purpose, it opened the international Helsinki Energy Challenge competition on 27 February 2020. The competition seeks solutions through which the city can be heated sustainably in the coming decades – without coal and with as little biomass as possible. The competition’s first prize is one million euros.

Hope Tale - "Girl Eats Sun"  EP

Hope Tale – “Girl Eats Sun”  EP

Today, London-based up and comer Hope Tala continues to build the heat around her name with the reveal of her stunning new EP, Girl Eats Sun, featuring standout Aminé-collaboration, Cherries.”

LISTEN TO GIRL EATS SUN HERE!

Girl Eats Sun solidifies Hope Tala as an artist set to do big things in 2021. With her unique blend of R&B and bossa nova, Hope Tala has crafted a sound that already feels recognizable to her, and there is plenty more on the way.

“Since I started writing music, I’ve used fruit imagery; I’ve always been inspired by the Garden of Eden and the story of Adam and Eve,” Hope Tala states, speaking on ‘Cherries.’ “I think of ‘Cherries’ as being a really corporeal song –  there’s a lot of lyrical content about how the body portrays feeling and emotion, and when I was writing it I used the symbol of cherries as my focal point to help me understand where these two worlds – material and emotional – collide.”

With EP track “All My Girls Like To Fight” currently spinning across BBC Radio 1 as Introducing Track Of The Week, Hope Tala has had a prolific couple of months, returning after a year away to reveal “All My Girls Like To Fight” and “Crazy” to widescale plaudits from Billboard, Refinery29, MTV, Wonderland, The Line Of Best Fit, NOTION, DORK and CLASH, as well as featuring on key Spotify playlists Pollen & Alternative R&B. Girl Eats Sun is the follow up to Hope Tala’s stellar EP Sensitive Soul, a project acclaimed by areas such as Rolling Stone, Vogue and more and featuring Hope Tala’s breakthrough single “Lovestained,” a track which has racked up over 10 million streams since last year.

“At the core of ‘Girl Eats Sun’ is an assertion of confidence and boldness,” Hope Tala explains, speaking on Girl Eats Sun. “The title is a paraphrase of ‘if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen’ – as the girl eating the sun I’m daring and fearless. I chose this title because I feel as if the songs and stories on this project are more vivid and inventive than anything I’ve released thus far, and I’ve pushed my sound in different, exciting directions.”

Now represented by Dina Sahim and Wassim “SAL” Slaiby at SAL&CO (The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Brandy, Bryson Tiller), Hope Tala is ending 2020 with a flourish. Look out for more in 2021.

Beyoncé’s Ivy Park × Adidas dropping new collection on Oct. 30

21 hours ago, Beyoncé posted on Instagram a photo that read “THIS IS MY PARK” over a field of wild poppies, just below a purple mountainscape. She tagged @weareivypark, her iconic clothing brand, and the infamous @adidas. The post was captioned, “DRIP 2 October 20.”

Evidently, Beyoncé is planning her second Ivy Park drop, which will reveal a second collection on Oct. 30, ten days from today. But, aside from the Instagram post, little is known about what the collection has to offer.

Its predecessor, the capsule collection, sold functional athleisure and was cherished by many celebrities, including Zendaya, Cardi B, Janelle Monáe, and Reese Witherspoon. It sported mostly maroons and oranges and was adored by those select few who got their hands on it.

The second collection keeps the promise Ivy Park makes on its website, first posted when the first collection sold out almost immediately. Aside from clothes, it also sold sneakers and accessories between $25 and $170, according to Kelsey Garcia of PopSugar.

“This IVY PARK capsule collection is only the first in an ongoing partnership with our world-class ally, adidas,” it says. “Thank you for being part of the flow. Stay tuned.”

Beyoncé announcement comes after weeks of her posting for Black Lives Matter, offering tributes to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Jacob Blake, and other Black Americans killed at the hands of law enforcement, and the release of her film/visual album, Black is King.

Next Friday, we will finally see what Beyoncé has to offer us, in a highly anticipated clothing drop that could literally be anything.
