Vegas’ New Gateway Arches Illuminated Tonight

Tonight, the City of Las Vegas will illuminate its new, 80-foot-tall Gateway Arches spanning Las Vegas Boulevard between St. Louis and Bob Stupak avenues at the base of The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod. Conceived and designed by Selbert Perkins Design and fabricated and installed by YESCO, the 100-year-old company synonymous with Las Vegas’ most iconic signs, the archway marks travelers’ official arrival into the City of Las Vegas.

“Las Vegas is known worldwide as the getaway for the best in entertainment, fun, dining and convention business,” Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said. “What better way to invite everyone into historic downtown than by this passing through this massive, new archway into the heart of a revitalized Las Vegas.”

“Ward 3 is a dynamic part of the city of Las Vegas and I am so excited to represent the home of this beautiful new gateway,” Ward 3 Councilwoman Olivia Diaz said. “I am sure these iconic arches will become synonymous with the fun and excitement of our city, as well as being a point of community pride for years to come.”

The blue illuminated arches form a towering gateway to the city’s burgeoning Downtown and feature a pink, retro-inspired Las Vegas emblem suspended above the boulevard. While the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign at the south end of the Strip enjoys world renown, many people do not realize it lies outside the City of Las Vegas’ boundaries in unincorporated Clark County, Nevada. The new, brightly lit, Gateway Arches will welcome visitors to the city of Las Vegas as they travel north on Las Vegas Boulevard.

“YESCO has a long history of fabricating, installing and maintaining Las Vegas’ most internationally recognizable signs, and the Gateway Arches represent the newest monumental addition to that portfolio,” said Jeff Young, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of YESCO. “This project is history in the making, and we’re proud to have partnered with the City of Las Vegas and Selbert Perkins Design to bring it to life.”

Added Stephen Thayer, vice president and general manager at The STRAT, “The Gateway Arches are a striking landmark to designate what has long been the gateway from the Las Vegas Strip to the City of Las Vegas. We are thrilled that this beautiful monument has been erected just steps away from our iconic tower.”

“Selbert Perkins Design has been designing city gateways, public art and landmarks for over 30 years. We are honored to have worked with the City of Las Vegas to design its newest gateway which welcomes all to historic downtown,” said Robin Perkins, partner of Selbert Perkins Design. “Our thanks to YESCO for fabricating and installing this complex work. It’s been a fantastic collaboration all around!”

FUN FACTS:

  • One leg of the Gateway Arches weighs 18,400 pounds
  • Number of lights on the arches: 13,016
  • City Of Las Vegas emblem measures 20-feet x 40-feet and weighs 7,300 pounds
  • The entire arch draws over 61,000 watts of power
  • The arches are comprised of over 13,000 + RGB light-emitting diode (LED) pucks that are individually programmable
  • Over 700 feet of fully programmable RGBW LED Flex Neon, each pixel is 4.92 inches
  • Fully programmable, the color-changing sign contains more than 170 IP addresses
  • Each arch leg spans 140 feet across Las Vegas Boulevard
  • 900-plus LED lamps in the southern face of the hanging “Las Vegas” cabinet

Mae Muller – dependent

Mae Muller dropped a brand new music video Wednesday for her song “dependent.”

The new video from the North London-based singer is directed by Sophia Ray, who has worked with artists like Lily Allen, Ty Dolla $ign and Amber Mark. You can see it by clicking right here.

Muller said this is one of her favorite videos she has ever done.

“I loved collaborating with the super talented Sophia Ray and the team that brought the concept of the song to life. The looks, the dancers, everything is on point! I really wanted to do this song justice with a stunning video and feel like we’ve really achieved that,” Muller said.

The song opens her debut EP, which is titled “no one else, not even you,” and it takes a look at the joy of finding love in combination with the fear of losing your individuality. The EP contains eight tracks and showcases Muller’s undeniably fearless and fun style of pop music.

She said she wrote the song at the beginning of a relationship at a time during which she could feel herself falling in love but felt scared at the same time.

“That’s what always happens when I start to fall for someone: instead of going with the flow and just enjoying myself, I start to panic a bit because of the power you have to give up,” she said. “This song is me being totally honest about not wanting to become dependent on someone, because my independence is so important to me.”

The song is co-written by Henrik Michelson of Electric, and it is produced and written with help from Rick Nowels, Jimmy Napes, Skyler Stonestreet and Kenny Beats.

At 23 years old, Muller has already racked up more than 100 million global streams and has been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday and Apple Music’s A-List Pop, In My Room, Future Hits and more.

She also sold out a 2020 headline tour of the United Kingdom, proving her ability to build a fan base around the entire world.

Critics and press are also loving Muller.

GQ said, “Mae Muller’s witty and brutally honest lyrics set her apart from her peers.”

Flaunt said, “Mae Muller is your new favorite singerߪHer goal is to be a spokeswoman for this new generation, unveiling layers of authenticity, talent, beauty and confidence.”

Wonderland called her a “clear pop sensation in the making,” while The Guardian said listeners can “expect an abundance of attitude.”

CBD and Coffee: What You Need To Know

A daily routine for most people is drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. However, it can produce negative side effects like – feeling anxious, jitters, increased heart rate, etc. So, it’s no surprise that people started adding CBD into their cups of coffee. You may be wondering if adding CBD to your coffee will do anything; here is what you need to know about CBD and coffee.

The Stimulating Effects

It’s no secret that coffee has stimulating effects that most of us enjoy; this is the reason why we drink it after all. This can include a sense of being alert and concentration. Although it sounds nice it can quickly escalate into anxiety and other side effects. Therefore, it only makes sense why people decided to start adding CBD into their coffee. When you’re trying to relax you may reach for a CBD Tincture. So, naturally you’ll want to add it to your coffee to give it that boost you’re looking for. Plus, the added terpenes can make your coffee experience slightly better.

The best way to include CBD into your coffee is by adding a couple of drops in your cup. However, you want to make sure the coffee is not scalding hot. Otherwise you run the risk of burning the CBD, causing it to lose its potency. Instead, try adding a couple of drops after you’ve added your milk . Or, you could let your coffee cool down before you decide to add a couple of drops. If the coffee is too hot to drink then it’s too hot to add CBD. Also, try pairing up different Tincture flavors to your coffee to better the taste. This way you’re enjoying your coffee while taking in some CBD at the same time. There are a couple of other popular methods of enjoying CBD with Coffee.

Vaping CBD and Coffee

There are some people who enjoy smoking a cigarette with their coffee. They do this because they feel that it gets their metabolism going. However, you are able to vape some CBD and enjoy a nice cup of coffee at the same time. A good product to try this with is our Active Full Spectrum CBD Pen. This vape pen comes infused with caffeine, full spectrum CBD, and Terpenes. Since coffee already has caffeine, adding more caffeine to the equation can enhance your coffee experience. It might not get you the same effects as smoking a cigarette but it’s a great alternative.

Sublingual

Another option that you have is taking CBD drops sublingually. When you finish your cup of coffee you can put some CBD oil under your tongue. This way you can chill with some CBD after you’ve finished your coffee. You’re able to get CBD into your system without spreading it out in a cup of coffee. You’ll want to stick to this method if you’re the type of person that doesn’t tend to finish your coffee. That way you’re not leaving behind any CBD.

What Kind of Coffee to Use

With many new companies and cafe’s emerging a common question is what kind of coffee to use. Although it’s ideal to use a water soluble CBD instead of oil soluble; CBD oil can work great with coffee. A lot of new products offer CBD infused coffee that just requires warm water to enjoy. However, the type of coffee used depends on your preference.

For ready made-infused coffee a Keurig cup is probably the best option. This is because you know how much CBD you’re getting in every cup. However, other infused brands do offer an estimate but won’t always be an exact amount. Although these are great, we still would recommend taking your CBD sublingually after you’ve enjoyed your cup.

The Right Dosage to Take

You might be wondering what is the right dosage to take. Many people tend to jump right in to taking CBD and that’s ok. CBD might be new to you or you might be a seasoned veteran and have been taking it for years. Whatever the case might be the right dosage depends on several things.

First, start with the recommended dosage on the bottle. You will have to consider the strength of the CBD in questions. Dosages vary depending on the strength. If you have a higher strength form of CBD a little will go a long way. However, it might be higher in price; but it tends to last longer. This is because you will not need as much to get the desired effects.

Conclusion

Pairing the right CBD with your morning cup of coffee is a great way to start the day. You will enjoy the stimulating effects of how CBD interacts with coffee. How you take your CBD is as equally important as what type of coffee you choose. Pairing the right cup of coffee with the perfect amount of CBD makes for a great experience. We encourage you to be bold, and try something new – you might fall in love with the combination.

Turkey Recipes From Melissa Cookston

No one likes a dry turkey, and Melissa Cookston, celebrity chef and judge on Netflix’s new food show “American Barbecue Showdown,” is here to help avoid ruined Thanksgivings.

Cookston offers up three different recipes for all to enjoy while also touching on the differences between brining and injecting.

Brining vs. Injecting

“The first thing people will say is, ‘You should brine your turkey.’ Yes, brining has many adherents, but I’m not usually one of them. I have always preferred injecting to deliver added moisture and flavor for a few reasons. First, brining a turkey requires a good bit of refrigerated space, generally for a couple of days. Space in the fridge is generally in short supply around the holidays. Secondly, brining has its drawbacks in terms of how it affects (for me at least) the skin and texture of the turkey. Maybe I’ve just not been doing it right, but I’ve just never been a huge fan. I have published brined turkey recipes that were quite good, I thought, but overall, I just prefer injecting a turkey.”

Injecting a Turkey

“When you are going to inject, you can do it right before cooking. You can also put in a different flavor profile than you can when you brine. Also, I’ve had some brined turkeys that were just too salty, and you won’t run the risk of that by injecting.

“You’re going to need an injector obviously. If this is a once-a-year thing for you, then grab an injector from the grocery store for a couple of dollars. They will suffice to get through one turkey a year. If you cook and BBQ more often through the year, you’ll want to invest in a better injector. I have a heavy-duty injector that will make short work of turkeys, pork butts, whole hogs, etc.

“When you inject the turkey, try not to go through the skin too often. I usually work around the skin of the breast as much as possible. If I do go through the skin, I will use it multiple times by injecting through that spot multiple times (at different angles.)”

Turkey Injection Recipes

“I’m attaching some recipes below to help you get started. As you see, you’ll only be limited by your imagination when you inject, so if you want to add some different flavors, knock yourself out. The only caution is making sure you don’t have too large of particles in your injection recipe, or you might clog your needle. These recipes also work great with any poultry, so don’t just save them for Thanksgiving!”

Students from Ghanaian Orphanage Offered Experience of a Lifetime

Two evenings a week, ten high school students in the West African nation of Ghana travel by taxi from the orphanage where they live to historic Cape Coast Castle, once a fort used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships bound for the Americas. The students file into a conference room in what is now a government building, fire up laptops and connect to a research lab half a world away. They eagerly listen as instructors in California explain how to pluck out the brains of fruit flies to extract and analyze their genetic material.

The eight-week Neurobiology course is offered remotely by Boz Life Science Research and Teaching Institute as part of UC San Diego Extension’s Futures program. UC San Diego Extension created the Futures program to allow high school students in the San Diego region to master high-demand career skills in life sciences, computer programming and business management. However, as the coronavirus pandemic forced the classes to move online, the change raised obstacles but also created opportunities.

“We were thinking about how being virtual allows us to access different groups of kids,” said Liisa Bozinovic, who co-founded the Boz Institute with her husband, Goran. She serves on the board of Learn Grow Lead, a nonprofit group that supports the orphanage in Cape Coast, and it occurred to her that students there could take part in an online Futures class.

“I didn’t even think it could be possible for us to be learning through the internet,” 10th-grader Michael Cobbinah said in a Zoom call from Cape Coast, Ghana. “It astonishes me. I am finding it very fun and interesting.”

Twelfth-grader Ebenezer Cann believes the class will help him on the path to a medical career. He is fascinated by what he is learning, “especially about the flies that we dissect. I really like the part about how we can use their DNA to study the diseases that affect human beings.”

For Stephen Dankwah, Director of Learn Grow Lead’s Ghanaian operations, the Futures class is only a beginning. “We want to go further with this program,” he said. “If we can get a science lab built here in Cape Coast, it will be the greatest thing ever to happen to us. We could even extend it so that our children will have the opportunity to see the University of California through an exchange program. That has been our dream.”

ABOUT LEARN GROW LEAD

Learn Grow Lead’s mission is to make a difference in the world. This non-profit works tirelessly to educate and empower Ghana’s children and help them build a better future. Learn Grow Lead is also driven to empower the local community to raise their own money and become less dependent on US donors, that project is The Helpers Farm. Since 2003 their board has impacted thousands of lives by educating children, starting the sustainable farm, and building an orphanage. All Good Just A Week Ago

If you’re feeling a little bit lonely as a single person during quarantine, there might be a perfect book for you.

For both men and women, “All Good Just A Week Ago: Funny Dating Stories to Help You Keep Your Head in the Game” is chock-full of funny, relatable dating stories put together from interviews.

With teachable moments and unimaginable scenarios, “All Good Just A Week Ago” helps single people keep their heads in the game.

Erika McCall and Niesha Forbes, two best friends, wanted to put their quarantine time to good use, so they set up 50 interviews to gather data and stories for the book.

These stories prove that relationships can make you laugh and roll your eyes instead of cry, all while showing us that we’re not alone.

In 1950, only 22% of Americans were without a romantic partner. In 2019, 124 million Americans were without a partner.

Though the percentage of people in relationships has gone down, the desire to find love and companionship has not.

McCall said, “It’s the year of 20/20 vision, and it’s time for a dating and love revolution.”

Both authors agreed that the revolution begins with this book. With a goal to understand romantic communication and expectations, “All Good Just A Week Ago” uses stories to heal relationships and foster close, loving, committed relationships in a generation obsesses with “hook up culture.”

McCall and Forbes even get into a few of their own stories. McCall herself is single and wants to clear the way for her future husband to enter her life while Forbes is on her way to her third wedding anniversary and hopes that sharing her experience can help bring about mutual respect, kindness and traditional courtship in relationships.

McCall said her story is every woman’s story while Forbes said, “It is critical to know that once you get to a certain age, things you did in your early twenties, all those toxic behavior patterns where you’re not putting your worth above your desire to be with someone, if you don’t do the work on yourself, you will find yourself in your thirties, forties and even fifties, having not learned the important lessons or found true love.”

Following the laughs in the beginning of the book, readers will reach a call to action that encourages men and women to think critically about how to move forward with healthier relationship dynamics.

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS – THE MAVERICKS

By Cassandra Yany

Austin City Limits will spotlight renowned rock and country trailblazers The Mavericks on Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. CT/ 9 p.m. ET on PBS. The installment is part of the series’ 46th season and will showcase the band’s chart-topping, all Spanish-language album En Español.

The GRAMMY, CMA and ACM award-winning band reaches a career milestone with this being their first Spanish-language album, which debuted at no. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums Chart. The genre-bending group return to their Miami roots to blend their eclecticism with a collection of Spanish language originals and traditional Latin songs that inspired them.

The four core Mavericks members— lead singer and songwriter Raul Malo, guitarist Eddie Perez, keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden and drummer Paul Deakin— are elevated by horns, accordion and backing vocals for a powerful nine-musician combo. The band celebrates the diversity of cultures with their unique take on classic tracks from the vast Latin American catalog, starting off with the Cuban country track “La Sitiera,” which escalates to an exciting full-band bloom complete with horns and accordion.

Malo— who is a first-generation Cuban American— introduces his late grandfather’s favorite song, “Me Olvidé de Vivir” by Julio Iglesias, which the Mavericks made their own in a country rendition. He also salutes one of his own favorite artists with the mariachi-flavored spin they take on Juan Gabriel’s “No Vale La Pena.”

The group delivers thrilling performances of new originals, including “Recuerdos,” which is backed by horns, and “Suspiro Azul,” which is amplified by standout harmonies. In tribute to performing at the house that Willie Nelson built, Malo gives a solo acoustic take on Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain.” The band also performed Latin-influenced tracks form their 2013 reunion album In Time, including the lush “Come Unto Me,” featuring dueling guitar and accordion solos, and the energetic, rockabilly-flavored “As Long As There’s Loving Tonight.”

“Showcasing The Mavericks first all-Spanish album on Austin City Limits during the same week as the Latin Grammy Awards is perfect timing,” said ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “Since I became co-producer of the Latin GRAMMYs, I’ve made it my mission to bring the joy and beauty of Latin music to the ACL stage every year. This show is a great ‘primer’ for that!”

The Mavericks’ episode was recorded in September and will be the second no-audience taping of the program due to the coronavirus pandemic. This marks the group’s third appearance on the show, being their first in two decades.

During these tough times, ACL continues to provide viewers with a front row seat to live performances. The series airs weekly across the nation and full episodes are made available online for a limited time immediately following the broadcast. The second half of the Season 46 will be announced soon, with six new episodes to begin airing in January. Fans can also find exclusive songs, behind-the-scenes videos and full-length artist interviews on the ACL YouTube channel.

About Austin City Limits

Austin City Limits (ACL) offers viewers unparalleled access to featured acts in an intimate setting that provides a platform for artists to deliver inspired, memorable, full-length performances. Now in its 46th Season, the program is taped live before a concert audience from The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. Austin City Limits is the longest-running music series in television history and remains the only TV series to ever be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Since its inception, the groundbreaking music series has become an institution that’s helped secure Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World. The historic KLRU Studio 6A, home to 36 years of ACL concerts, has been designated an official Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Landmark. In 2011, ACL moved to the new venue ACL Live at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. ACL received a rare institutional Peabody Award for excellence and outstanding achievement in 2012.

Austin City Limits is produced by Austin PBS, KLRU-TV and funding is provided in part by Dell Technologies, RigUp, the Austin Convention Center Department and Cirrus Logic. Additional funding is provided by the Friends of Austin City Limits. Learn more about Austin City Limits, programming and history at acltv.com.
