A Beginner’s Guide To Non-Profit Fundraising

Fundraising forms the core of all non-profits, and it allows them to do the great work which they have been set up for. The reality for most of these organizations however is that fundraising is something which is not always enjoyable. These organizations want to be out there doing great work, yet of course in order to do that they need funds, and for that they need donors.

Brand new organizations will need to get to work quickly in setting up their fundraising infrastructure, and in doing so they can not only raise funds now, but give themselves the greatest opportunity of counting to do so in the future.

Identify Your Ideal Donor

Fundraising is about working smart as well as hard and that is why identifying the ideal donor is the first place to start. If you take a blanket approach to this then you will find that you are wasting you time in so many avenues, and that will cost money too. Consider what your organization is trying to do, and then who that speaks to, this will help to identify which group of people are most likely to care enough to put their hands in their pockets.

Ensure You Have a CRM In Place

In terms of a nonprofit success pack Salesforce offers the perfect CRM which your company can use to store and manage important data about your fundraising efforts, and about your donors. This is an easy to manage dashboard with will boost your fundraising efforts thanks to smart apps which integrate into the CRM, as well as intelligent use of metrics which can help you to tweak your fundraising strategy.

Understand What Your Goals Are

Before you begin your approach to fundraising, you have to first set out clear goals. These goals are both for your company and for the donor. Laying out what your monthly costs are, what your desires are and how much money will be required for all of this to be taken care of are crucial calculations to make.

Market The Non Profit

There has to be some spending on your behalf and the marketing of your non-profit will be one such area of investment. It is essential that you have an eye on building the brand, so that you can call attention to the great work which you and your company are doing. This is a necessary step which will bring in more donations.

The Evaluation Process

No matter whether you have just launched the fundraising round or you are in the thick of it evaluation is key. Working out which approach brought the best results with regards to your campaign, understanding what has surprised you along the way – both good and bad – and understanding how to shape your strategy in the future to gain better results, these are all critical in your efforts to raise funds.

Focus on creating and implementing the most efficient strategy which will bring in the funds which your organization requires.

Opioid Crisis Takes a Turn with Death of Founder

By: Elle Grant

The opioid epidemic is one of the great public health crises facing the United States today. Over the past two decades, the crisis has ebbed and flowed in different moments, but overall deaths, especially amongst younger people, have increased at an alarming rate. One of the most distinct drugs at the root of the problem is OxyContin from the company Purdue Pharma, a substance now known to be distinctly addictive and dangerous.

OxyContin, also known on the street as killers, OC, Oxy, poor man’s heroin or Oxycotton, is dangerous particularly due to its most active ingredient; “a 12-hour, time-released form of oxycodone, a synthetic form of morphine that is found in common painkillers like Percodan and Percocet.” Alarmingly, OxyContin can have as much as ten times the amount of oxycodone as an average Percodan or Percocet. Approved by the FDA in 1995, the National Institute on Drug Abuse asserts the “chronic use of drugs such as OxyContin can lead to physical dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms if use is stopped, including insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps, and involuntary leg movements. Large doses can cause severe, potentially fatal, respiratory depression.” Intended to be taken orally, many patients and addicts chose to inject or snort the pills (after being modified) to quicken and heighten the effects. Oxycodone is intensely addictive, requiring more frequent and stronger doses as the body becomes dependent.

Efforts were being made to hold OxyContin owners and Purdue Pharma executives accountable for their actions. Thousands of lawsuits had been filed against the Sackler family, one of America’s wealthiest with an estimated combined net worth of about $13 billion. One of the main pillars of the family was Jonathan Sackler, son of one of the three Sackler brothers that transformed the small drug company Purdue Frederick into a hugely profitable pharmaceutical firm. Sackler passed away on the June 30 due to cancer, complicating many of the lawsuits as he was often named a defendant. Other members of his family have been named other defendants, depending on the case.

The famed OxyContin pill launched in the mid-1990s and was continually and thoroughly promoted by the Connecticut based family. The members of the family are charged with the accusation that “eight people in a single family made the choices that caused much of the US opioid epidemic” due to an unethical, irresponsible, and often illegal scheme. Furthermore, “the actions of the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma included sharing studies that they knew were misleading, claiming that this was an effective, long-term treatment that didn’t give rise to risks of addiction,” Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser told reporters at a news conference last year. “Those claims were verifiably false and ignored expert warnings. And they even undermined studies suggesting that there were addictive effects.”

Purdue as a company as well as the Sackler family deny any wrongdoing. Currently, Purdue seeks bankruptcy protection in order to counteract nearly 3,000 lawsuits that attribute blame to Purdue for beginning the opioid crisis. A Department of Justice criminal investigation is ongoing, relating to this process.

The opioid crisis, an epidemic that has spanned from 1999 to the present, has killed almost 500,000 individuals, potentially more. This count includes those that have died from an overdose involving an opioid, including both prescription and illicit opioids. Said epidemic can be characterized in three waves. The first beginning with the rise of prescribed opioids in the 1990s, including “natural and semi-synthetic opioids and methadone.” The second wave is marked by an increase of overdose deaths specifically related to heroin. The third commenced in 2013, with alarmingly stark increases in overdose deaths due to synthetic opioids, especially those “involving illicitly manufactured fentanyl” Unfortunately, “the market for illicitly manufactured fentanyl continues to change and it can be found in combination with heroin, counterfeit pills, and cocaine.”

Many Americans are unaware of the impact of the opioid crisis, or the fact that it is becoming increasingly, not decreasingly relevant to society. Yet, there are signs of positive change. Overall opioid-involved death rates decreased by 2% from 2017 to 2018, with sharper drops in prescription and heroin-involved deaths. Yet the increase in synthetic opioid-involved death rates increased by 10%, proving more work must be done to protect Americans. Currently, the Center for Disease Control combats this epidemic by monitoring trends, advancing research, equipping states with resources, supporting providers, partnering with public safety officials, and increasing public awareness.

Apart from crooked doctors, big pharmaceuticals, especially Jonathan Sackler, the Sackler family, and Purdue Pharma have received a majority of the blame for the epidemic. Jonathan Sackler’s death marks the death of who many see as a villain, but before justice was served in the American court system.

The opioid crisis, two decades in, has captivated the American imagination through film and media, as many crises often due. Netflix in particular has made efforts to document the crisis, including with the true crime series The Pharmacist and the limited series The Business of Drugs. Coming to Netflix next month is the long-awaited Hillbilly Elegy, starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams, both nominated for six Academy Awards each. The film lends a careful eye towards Appalachia, an area ravaged by the opioid epidemic, and features Adams in the role of a struggling addict. The film has already generated major Oscar buzz and will certainly bring further attention to a crucial issue.

Addiction is an incredibly difficult disease to combat. If you or a love one is struggling, please consider contacting the national hotline.

A Very Sperry Fall

By: Armon Hayes

“A wet deck was such a dangerous thing” said Paul Sperry.

Sperry is the story of an iconic American brand. Fashion and sustainability has been rooted within the brand since 1934, when Paul Sperry fell off the deck of his sailboat. He set out to design a non-slip boat shoe, which led to the birth of an array of styles that would accommodate lifestyles and seasons to come. For men, women, and children, he inspired everyone to find common ground.

Inspired by his dog’s grooved paws, which never seemed to slip, he carved grooves into a rubber sole then glued that to a canvas upper. The lugged rubber outsole with molded Wave-Siping™ known as the mother of invention provides no-slip traction. It has become an iconic American shoe, with partnerships in style with artists like John Legend. As of late, in celebration of 85 years of Sperry’s iconic and true innovation, and preparing for the fall season, I highly recommend their Avenue Duck boots. It serves as the quintessential item for a forever changing environment.

I chose the tan/brown, which fits true to size built with essential features and quality materials to provide comfort and sure footing in any conditions. Therefore, I spend less time worrying about the climate while spending more time enjoying each experience in #sperrystyle

Ready for anything, the Men’s Avenue Wool Duck boot is moderately priced at $109.95 and is available in Tan/Brown, Grey/Black, Olive/Brown and solid Brown. Four options thoughtfully designed with contrasting wool details adding texture and durability to such a fashionable shoe.

Key features include:

  • The lightweight duck boot that’s ready for anything. Looking for variety, also try the Saltwater Duck boot for Men, Women’s &Kids.
  • Waterproof EVA shell and premium wool upper keeps feet dry and warm in wintry conditions.
  • Non-marking, lugged rubber outsole with molded Wave-Siping™ provides no-slip traction.

So, no longer will you let cold temperatures and stormy skies stop you from embarking on your next journey. Take on the elements in Sperry boots designed to withstand wet weather and rugged terrain. So, you can worry less on how to keep it chic without shuffling aside your needs or, of course, safety.

JOSEPH LOWERY COVERS 360 MAGAZINE

360 Magazine officially launched their most recent issue today. It will be available online, in print, and for tablets. Its cover features an illustration of Rev. Joseph Lowery, and inside there are stories featuring Lubbock, Isabella Fries, Nikki Taylor, LC Convertible, Rolls-Royce, Door County, Elkhart Lake, Toyota Corolla Apex, and Marsha’s House.

A print copy of the magazine can be purchased on blurb.com and is available to everyone around the world. It is also available online to view on their site.

The featured story revolves around Lowery, who passed away on March 27, 2020 at the age of 98. His death did not garner much attention from the public, despite him being a notable American minister and Civil Rights activist. Lowery’s death came right as the coronavirus pandemic descended on the United States. Perhaps this is why his passing did not receive considerable attention.

“His legacy has gone under appreciated,” the article reads. “Swallowed by momentum of the current movement.”

Lowery worked in tandem with his friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with whom he founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, marched on Selma, and organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955. As one of the longest surviving members of the Civil Rights Movement, Lowery carried with him King’s legacy.

With it, he eulogized King’s wife, Coretta Scott King, in 2006. With it, he delivered the benediction of the first Black President of the United States, Barack Obama, at his inauguration in 2009. And, carrying with him the legacy of King and his other compatriots in the Civil Right’s Movement, he was awarded by the same Black President the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“Born and raised in Jim Crow Alabama, preaching in his blood, the Rev. Joseph Lowery is a giant of the Moses generation of civil rights leaders,” Obama said at the inauguration. “It was just King, Lowery, and a few others, huddled in Montgomery, who laid the groundwork for the bus boycott and the movement that was to follow.”

His death came two months before the Black Lives Movement resurged after the killing of George Floyd, transforming the conversation regarding Black American lives in the nation. Two months later, Lowery’s friend John Lewis, another civil rights leader, also passed at the age of 80.

In his hometown of Huntsville, Georgia, there is a boulevard memorializing the civil rights icon. His legacy lives on in his notable work as well as his children and grandchildren, including 360 Magazine’s founder and president, Vaughn Lowery.

“Heading into an election season steeped with strife and antagonism, Joseph E. Lowery’s legacy serves as a poignant reminder,” the article reads. “His efforts to strive for a better world, his constant service and activism, and his dedication to both God and uplifting Black Americans all solidify him as a true icon of Civil Rights and American history.”

On top of its focus on Lowery, 360 Magazine profiles creatives like the singer-songwriter Nikki Taylor Vibe (aka Nikki Taylor) (7), singer Isabelle Fries (11), and model, influencer, and musician Don Benjamin (35). The newest models of hot cars debut on its pages, including the Lexus LC 500 Convertible (25), Toyota Corolla Apex (43), and the entirely reimagined Rolls-Royce Ghost (76).

And, lavish lifestyle pieces feature heavily throughout the issue. Elkhart Lake (31), which is a getaway on the east side of Wisconsin, is reviewed by 360 Magazine’s Elle Grant and Vaughn Lowery. The small city of Lubbock, TX (13) and the 212 Photography Istanbul festival (55) are also spotlit, and the articles on all three destinations are paired with stunning images.

Lastly, Marsha’s House is given its due attention. Marsha’s House houses homeless LGBTQ+ young adults, as Marsha P. Johnson did when she was alive. You can read more on page 51 of the issue.

Taylor Swift Achieves 12 New RIAA Certifications

Taylor Swift has garnered a total of 12 new certifications from the RIAA. Among them, her critically-acclaimed, 5 star 2020 album, folklore, has achieved gold and now certified platinum status.

The new album, folklore arrived this summer and quickly gained widespread acclaim and major audience excitement. It rapidly became the top-selling record of 2020 worldwide and is the only album this year to cross 1 million albums in pure sales in the U.S.

Swift notably completed “the longest consecutive run at number one since 2016” by acquiring six straight weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. Additionally, folklore returns to number one this week on the Billboard 200 chart, reaching eight nonconsecutive weeks at the top of the chart. What’s even more notable, Taylor has achieved 48 cumulative weeks at number one across all of her chart-topping albums which marks a record among women artists.

Other RIAA certifications include “You Need To Calm Down” which minted triple-platinum, platinum, and gold and “The Man” which is certified gold and platinum. Her song “Me,” featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco, is now double-platinum. Additionally, the single “Lover” picked up gold, platinum, and double-platinum certifications.

Taylor stands out as the only artist to have seven albums each sell at least 500,000 copies in a single week. Her albums, Fearless, Speak Now, RED, 1989, reputation, Lover and folklore, have all been a stellar success. Plus, she remains the first and only female artist in the 21st century to score five number one studio albums in the UK.

Folklore is the ten-time GRAMMY® Award-winning, record-breaking superstar’s eighth album and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Swift.

5 Game-Changing Benefits That SEO Can Give To Your Business

Now may be a tough time for businesses to part with capital for marketing. The reality, however, is that making such a decision could make the difference between coming out of the pandemic in good shape, or not coming out at all. Marketing has and always will provide a great return on investment, and businesses need this more now than ever before. Any smart digital marketing campaign will feature a number of strategies and SEO will form the foundation of your success. And, you can acquire insights from SEO Tool Spamzilla Review – it’s another tool for optimizing your business website. In addition, be sure to optimize pages with a meta description length checker because less is more.

For big agencies like Local Digital SEO forms the bedrock of all campaigns and here is how it will be a real game changer for your business.

Improved User Experience

In today’s world, simply having an online presence isn’t enough and there is a higher focus than ever before on the type of user experience one can offer visitors to their website. The better the user experience, the longer visitors will hang around and the more likely they are to buy. To meet SEO requirements, ad agencies will start by bringing your website up to scratch, and the byproduct of that will be a better UX.

Cost Effective Ad Strategy

SEO is a one-time cost which will benefit your business for a long time to come. This is a strategy which gets more clicks than PPC and it is one of the most cost effective strategies out there. This is an inbound marketing campaign, there is less focus on going to your customers and a much higher emphasis on enticing them to come and see what you are all about.

Improving The Awareness of Your Brand

The goal of SEO is to appear on the top pages of the search engine for a wide variety of keywords. In doing this you are going to be seen by a huge number of people, many of whom may not actually check out your site, at least not the first time. The more that you are seen on the search results however, the more a consumer recognizes the power of your brand, and that further increases your chance to make sales, and build a great online reputation.

Attracting Local Customers

The reason why so many small businesses should focus on SEO is that it works wonders in driving local customers through the doors. Organic search is bigger than ever, and looking for businesses and services ‘near me’ is how the majority of consumers find new places to go. Through the implementation of SEO your business can really light up the local market.

Optimizing Your Site For Mobile

No SEO campaign would be complete if it didn’t focus on mobile users and in order to do that, your business website will need to be mobile optimized. Just under half of all organic searches are made via mobile, if your website cannot be viewed on mobile, or if it only offers the desktop version, you will lose a huge opportunity to make sales.

Squeezing out some capital for SEO marketing could be the way to secure long term success for your business.

About Griff

Griff is well on her way to becoming the next face of British Pop—and a next-generation type of pop star, at that. Born to Chinese and Jamaican parents just out of Watford, U.K., Griff began making music by borrowing her brother’s logic: teaching herself how to produce songs secretly from her classmates (many of whom only found out what Griff was up to when they heard her on Annie Mac). Hailed by Vogue as a “multicultural, multi-hyphenated, and multi-talented…utterly unique teenager” and by NME who called her “A phenomenon…the teenage boss about to take charge of pop,” Griff’s musical creativity draws no boundaries. Aside from making her own beats, sewing her own clothes, and shooting a music video on her iPhone under lockdown, Griff’s raw and vulnerable lyrics also prove she is mature beyond her years. With songs about friendship. (“1,000,000 X Better”), mental health (“Say It Again”), those stinging formative breakups (“Forgive Myself”) and the importance of family (“Good Stuff,” a moving account of Griff’s family fostering children), Griff manages to draw from her own difficult experiences and turn them into something uniformly positive making her particular model of bedroom-pop fitting for a legion of young girls to follow.
