U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success

The U.S. Soccer Foundation adapted and launched its signature Soccer for Success program to fit ever-changing COVID-19 landscape.

The Foundation spent the past few months listening to its partners to best support the needs of soccer communities. By adapting its Soccer for Success curriculum, partners can run the program across a variety of settings. In lieu of the traditional in-person trainings, they are providing an online training that is specifically designed to prepare coach-mentors to deliver the program across these new settings. The 12-week curriculum consists of:

  • Thirty-six pre-recorded video sessions that can be sent directly to participants and their families to complete at a time that works best for them. The sessions are around 15-20 minutes in length, can be done at home with little space and equipment, and incorporate health and wellness tips and information.
  • Thirty-six practice session plans that provide coach-mentors with guidance on how to run 45-minute virtual sessions (in real time) with their participants. The practice sessions include both soccer activities and health and wellness teaching points.
  • Thirty-six practice session plans that provide coach-mentors with guidance on how to run 60-minute, in-person socially distanced sessions with participants. The practice sessions include both soccer activities and health and wellness teaching points.
  • Thirty-six traditional in-person practice and game day sessions.

This formatting gives our partners the flexibility to run Soccer for Success three days a week for a typical 12-week season in the way that works best for them and their community at any given time, said Sarah Pickens, U.S. Soccer Foundation Associate Vice President of Programs.

In some places, space constraints may limit the number of in-person socially distanced participants allowed at one time. Fortunately, with this program, partners can alternate days that players can come in person, while still providing virtual lessons to any other students enrolled in the program. No matter what stage a given community is in, children have a way to participate in each session. This approach also anticipates the very real scenario that things will continue to change rapidly. Therefore, even if COVID-19 guidelines change, partners can still run programming virtually or through distribution of pre-recorded sessions without missing a beat.

Pickens added, This helps children have some sense of consistency, keeps them active, and keeps them connected to each other in a positive and fun way. The bottom line is that Soccer for Success keeps kids healthy in body and mind. In our current reality, this is more important than ever.

Plumbing Inspection Checklist for Homebuyers

It’s very common for new homebuyers to get too excited about a few features of the house and hurriedly finalize a purchase. Sometimes they may focus too much on certain aspects and completely ignore other important features. But, when deciding about purchasing a house, ignoring the plumbing faults can be a major mistake. Certain plumbing details that escape your inspecting eyes can turn out to be major faults and cost you expensive repairs. How would you feel if the day after you move in you find overflowing tubs of water in the toilet?

Read ahead for some tips and tricks to keep in mind while you house-hunt.

  1. Check the toilet flush: Don’t let the fear of embarrassment keep you from checking the toilet flush in every bathroom. Each and every toilet flush should be checked to inspect the plumbing. This way you will be able to figure out if there is a poor water pressure, a clog, or a leak.
  2. Test the water pressure: Most of the water-based home appliances like the dishwasher and the washing machine require adequate water pressure for optimal functioning. You can easily check the water pressure of your prospective home by running the shower or the hot water.
  3. Question the pipe age and material: Pipes can be made of different materials including copper, cast iron, galvanized, or PVC. Depending on the type of the material, pipes may be prone to damage or wearing off sooner. For example, if you consider galvanized pipes for example, they would need to be replaced after 30 years. Therefore, being informed about the age and material of the plumbing pipes will help you gauge their effective lifespan. In any case, if the plumbing is made of lead pipes, you should steer away from the deal immediately because of the risk of lead poisoning.
  4. Keep a lookout for visible signs of damage: Keep out for pipes or fixtures that look rusty or worn out. Some places you should definitely check are the inlet and outlet pipes of the water heater, water purifier etc. In fact, do a thorough inspection of these appliances for detecting leaks, corrosion and buildups.
  5. Check the basement: You may think that the basement would just be another storage space in the house, and don’t care about taking a trip underground. But as a prospective house owner, you should not ignore the basement inspection, especially from the plumbing point of view. Inspect any pipes and drains in the basement for leaks or damage. Enquire about the sump pump and check the reliability of its perimeter drainage system.
  6. Check outdoors: While the backyard and the lawn may not catch much of your attention, they carry some plumbing secrets you ought to unravel. Outdoor leaking pipes may commonly go unnoticed by homebuyers. While you take a walk outdoors look out for any suspicious water puddles, wild growths near the walls and mold growth on the building surface. These may be indicative of pipe leaks.
  7. Ask about the septic tank: Feel free to enquire whether the house has a septic tank and where it is located.
  8. Inquire about the rain drains: Every house needs a fault-free and effective rain drainage system. Rain water flooding can cause huge water damage and even health issues due to unreasonable humidity levels in the house. It’s a good idea to inspect the rain drains and downspouts and be assured of their effectiveness.

If you are not satisfied with the quality of the home’s plumbing after a thorough inspection, you should inform the agent or the seller about your opinion. In fact, it would be a smart move to get a professional plumber to inspect the plumbing further and give you a clear state of affairs of the house’s plumbing.

Spring Style of Vivienne Hu

The Vivienne Hu Spring/Summer 2021 collection perfectly captures all the best parts of spring fashion, while staying both classic and modern. The line consists of 50 pieces that channel both comfort and elegance. With clear influence from European design and New York business clothing, the line had a lot of femininity and beauty.

The collection features pastel colors to go along with the true nature of classic spring shades. With hues of light blue, pink and green, the colors perfectly resemble blooming flowers and the escape of a bleak winter. The pastels were subtle enough not to scream Easter, but are still the perfect colors for escaping a chilly winter. A few black pieces stood out in the collection in contrast to the generally light colors of the line. Although different then the other light and muted tones, black does not channel the energy of spring. However, black is a classic color and is always in style, no matter the season.

The Spring/Summer 2021 designs are all about details with fewer bold pieces focused on the fit of the clothes more than any flashy patterns. The outfits were made from light fabrics that flowed perfectly with the movements of the models. Satin and silk were used to keep the garments classic and allowed them to shimmer in the light. The dresses and pants were fluid and created movement as the models strutted down the runway.

Recently, midi skirts have taken over the fashion world. Thinking back to the 2010s, maxi skirts had the spotlight for a few years and short skirts have always been circulating the fashion world. However, skirts that meet in the middle are now everywhere. Midi skirts are perfect for spring because they keep your legs shielded on chilly days, but stay light and airy for the warm temperatures. The long skirts were often paired with a deep neckline to channel just the right amount of modesty.

Many of the shirts included puffy and long sleeves. Sometimes known as balloon sleeves, this victorian technique was very popular in this year’s fall and winter collections, so it is no surprise they will continue to be popular this spring. This type of sleeve can add a chic demeanor to even a basic outfit.

The line seems to pull inspiration from lingerie with silk and lace, but channels a level of professionalism that is ready to wear. The line includes many high necks with collars and a trendier version of a blazer. There is a clear inspiration taken from classic business fashion, but many of the looks have cut-outs or sheer pieces that make the outfits feel sexy.

The accessories were bold and stood out against the simple closet pieces. Statement earrings made out of beautiful beading drew attention upward and stood out against the more basic shirts. Bright, patterned scarves either tied in the model’s hair or around their necks added a pop of color and tied everything together. These accessories contrasted the simple clothing and made a statement in the look.

What’s a fashion-forward look without incorporating a statement bag or striking shoes. One of the looks was featured with a black, abstract shoulder bag. Although not the same, this bag closely resembles the Christian Dior Oblique Saddle Bag that has been increasingly popular on social media. The unique shape makes it a must-have especially with the popularity of shoulder bags. These mini purses have been one of the most popular types of stylish bags this year. Although shoes are rarely the showcase, the shoes in this line beautifully accentuate the colors of the clothing. Many of the shoes were functional flats or small heels with a bit of color from the outfit. Ruffles were also featured on many of the shoe straps, which is surprising because ruffles were minimal in the clothing pieces.

This line is significantly different from both the 2020 Spring/Summer collection as well as the 2019 Spring/Summer collection. In the 2019 line, the focus was on patterns and many of the clothes were bolder. Many geometric patterns were featured and the colors were much deeper. The 2020 line also contained deeper colors and included many silver and black pieces. Outerwear and heavy fabrics were much more present in the 2020 collection compared to the upcoming 2021 designs.

Hu has always been focused on making outfits both professional and stylish, which is hard to find in the world of business clothing. She originally received a degree in finance and worked in investment banking for over three years. She wanted a more creative career path and worked for a degree in fashion from Parsons School of Design. Her first collection was a spring/summer line in 2012 and she opened her first store in 2013.

“In the corporate world I see women lose their personal style for the sake of professionalism…forced to follow dress code and as a result being ‘uniform’,” said Hu on her website. “Women should never be forced to give up something so personal …My vision is to break open this forced box by bridging the gap between personality and professionalism.”

Vivienne Hu continues to show the professional world that work attire can be fashionable. Her Spring 2021 collection perfectly captures sophistication while staying graceful and sleek. The pieces in this line were functional enough to wear while still showing the designs of high fashion. The exquisite details tied each look together and made the line cohesive. This line is one to watch for this spring, especially if timeless pieces and business wear are a part of your wardrobe. Keep up with Vivienne Hu fashion on their website or Instagram

Peach Pit 2021 Tour

By Hannah DiPilato

The popular musical group Peach Pit has announced rescheduled tour dates for their North American Headline tour. They are also set to release the deluxe version of their sophomore album You and Your Friends on October 2nd.

Peach Pit hosted a Live Nation virtual concert where they announced the new dates for their headline tour which will now take place in 2021. Originally scheduled for spring 2020, the tour had to be pushed back a year due to the ongoing pandemic. Fortunately, most of the shows have a new date so fans can still watch the group perform when it is safe.

The band’s tour will now begin on Monday, March 1, 2021, with the first performance to take place in Victoria, BC. This tour will be hitting larger venues, such as NY’s Brooklyn Steel and LA’s Fonda Theatre which currently has two nights scheduled. A few new shows have been added for fans in Ottawa, ON, Buffalo, NY, Richmond, VA, Asheville, NC, Columbus, OH, Austin, Houston and Dallas, TX. Unfortunately, the shows at Off Broadway Nightclub in St. Louis, MO and The Bowery Ballroom in New York, NY have been canceled, but refunds are being offered for these shows by point of purchase.

Luckily for fans, tickets that were purchased for shows are now able to be used for the rescheduled dates. The new tour dates and ways to purchase tickets can be found on Peach Pit’s website

“We’re so excited to announce the rescheduled and new tour dates for 2021,” expressed band member Neil Smith while announcing the tour. “Assuming that guidance from our public health officials tells us it’s safe to be on the road, we can’t wait to get out and make up for lost time and play the songs from You and Your Friends live.”

The deluxe version of Peach Pit’s album You and Your Friends is set to be released on October 2 via Columbia Records. The deluxe version of the album will feature three songs not found on the original. These tracks include “Adidas,” “Denny’s Garage,” and “Psychics in LA,” and have been highly awaited by fans. The band has been performing “Physics in LA” at live shows for the past year so this song especially listeners have been on the lookout for.

Accusations Against Trump

By Payton Saso

An incident that allegedly occurred over 20 years ago, recently came to light when former model, Amy Dorris, accused current President, Donald Trump, of sexual assault at the 1997 US Open.

She told The Guardian, “He just shoved his tongue down my throat and I was pushing him off. And then that’s when his grip became tighter and his hands were very gropey and all over my butt, my breasts, my back, everything.”

Over the years since Trump began his presidency, dozens of women have come forward with assault claims and Dorris is the latest. Trump has 26 incidents of of unwanted sexual contact and 43 instances of inappropriate touching, according to the Independent.

Trumps track record with the way he treats women has always been in the public eye and even more-so since the start of his campaign in 2016. It seemed to start with the infamous leaked sound tapes from Access Hollywood. While Trump seems to have been crude to women his whole life, it wasn’t in the public eye until this was leaked. After this, numerous tapes were leaked and women came forward to accuse Trump of misconduct.

Now once again, his behavior is resurfacing. After Dorris gave the exclusive interview to The Guardian, Trump’s campaign legal advisor, Jenna Ellis, made a statement to NBC News claiming the allegations are completely false. “We will consider every legal means available to hold The Guardian accountable for its malicious publication of this unsubstantiated story. This is just another pathetic attempt to attack President Trump right before the election,” Ellis said.

However, Dorris has multiple out cry witnesses that include her mother, friends and her therapist. Which, if you’ve watched any episode of Law and Order: SVU, you’d know is enough to corroborate her story.

This recent allegation comes while Trump is currently facing a defamation lawsuit from author, E. Jean Carroll. The author accused him of raping her in a New York City department store in the 90’s, while Trump claims he has never met her (even though there are two photos of them together). Carroll sued Trump last November “Saying in a lawsuit filed in state court on [November 4, 2019] that Mr. Trump had damaged her reputation and her career when he denied her allegation in June,” according to the New York Times.

Carroll isn’t the only woman who has filed a lawsuit against the President following an allegation that was publicly denounce by Trump. Summer Zarros who was a contestant on “The Apprentice,” a show Trump was on, is suing for the same thing.

With the new allegation pending, Trump’s legal team say this accusation is strictly politically motivated; however, The Huffington Post reported that, “Dorris revealed her story to [The Guardian] 15 months ago, but she didn’t want to go public then to protect her family” and that she has now decided to come forward to be a role model to her teenage daughters.

Amy Dorris is now in the public eye along with many other women with the same accusations, hoping that by doing this they can empower other women and reveal the type of person who is President.

MUST-SEE EXHIBITS
Stevan Dohanos painting, “Tex’s Motorcycle”
Dohanos, a frequent contributor to the “Saturday EveningPost,” enjoyed capturing his subjects as they were in real life. For this piece, Dohanos found his muse on a street in Georgetown, Conn. “Tex” Keller had decorated his saddle bags with nickel spots and covered his saddle with fur, putting his own flair on the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Though Dohanos probably didn’t title the work, many motorcyclists now refer to it as “Tex’s Motorcycle” and prints of it can be found in shops across the country. The original has found a home at the H-D Museum.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon: Harley-Davidson’s Juneau Avenue Factory” (open now)
A recently recovered cache of architectural drawings includes plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. The pencil drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon” provides a snapshot of Harley-Davidson’s formative years and illustrates a chapter of Milwaukee history when the city was known as the “Machine Shop to the World.”

Taming the Road in Style
Closes Nov. 8
The earliest Harley-Davidson motorcycles had the same suspensions as bicycles of the time: none at all. The roads were a hodgepodge of dirt, stone, and other materials. Bumps were everywhere; suspension was needed. Comfort became a never-ending challenge for Harley-Davidson engineers. It was redefined by each new generation of rider and changing environments: over the decades, roads were paved, engine power and speed increased, and motorcyclists traveled faster over longer distances and craved smoother rides.  In response, Harley improved the seats, redesigned many frames, or added new suspension systems. Sometimes these changes were small, sometimes dramatic. These tweaks and additions added up over the years. The first Harley-Davidson vehicles resembled bicycles. Years later, bicycles and motorcycles looked nothing alike. The pursuit of comfort had transformed motorcycles. Taming the Road in Style examines this history, from the dawn of the bicycle to the launch of the new Harley-Davidson Softail models.

SAVE THE DATE
“Off-Road Harley-Davidson”
Opening Nov. 21, 2020
In the decades before America paved its highways, early riders had to be prepared for all sorts of terrain: sand, clay or dirt – and wandering those makeshift byways were Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Today, it’s called off-road or adventure touring; back then it was just called riding. Since 1903, Harley-Davidson motorcycles proved their toughness by riding over wooded hills, through stone-choked creek beds and up mountain sides. “Off-road Harley-Davidson” tells the history of motorcycles designed for rough roads, the people who rode them and the adventures they shared.

N.Peal Launches 007 Collection During NYFW

N.PEAL LAUNCHES WOMENS 007 CASHMERE COLLECTION DESIGNED IN CONJUNCTION WITH EON PRODUCTIONS, MAKERS OF THE JAMES BOND FILMS. N.PEAL DELVED INTO THE BOND ARCHIVES TO SELECT A SERIES OF ICONIC LOOKS FROM ACROSS THE PAST 50 YEARS AND REIMAGINED THEM FOR TODAY.

Exclusive cashmere knitwear brand N.Peal is delighted to announce the launch of the first ever 007 women’s cashmere collection presented exclusively on NYFW.COM

James Bond films have always placed women at the heart of the action. From the very outset, allies such as Honey Ryder (Dr. No) and Pussy Galore (Goldfinger) have proved themselves resilient and skillful. The films have since created numerous female characters that live long in the memory, including Tracy Di Vicenzo (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), May Day (A View To A Kill) and Jinx (Die Another Day), to name a few.The Bond films have also featured powerful female adversaries whose intellect and inventiveness have tested 007’s mettle.

To celebrate all of these iconic women, N.Peal has delved into the Bond archives to select seven classic looks from across the past 50 years and reimagined them for today. Finding inspiration in the shirt worn by Honey Ryder in Dr No (1962) to a deep V neck sweater worn by Holy Goodhead in Moonraker (1979).

The range is supported by two key pieces N.Peal designed and created in collaboration with No Time To Die Costume Designer, Suttirat Anne Larlarb. A Moorland Brown 100% cashmereT-shirt worn by the character Madeleine Swann and the Unisex Navy Blue ribbed army sweater worn by the character James Bond in the film and in the striking character poster. “The N.Peal team worked with my brief, which consisted of detailed photographs of authentic sweaters and several samples of extant vintage pieces, as well as colour thoughts and technical specs” Larlarb says. “When you are dealing with the number of decisions you have to make on a Bond film, with so many important characters and so many vital items of clothing, having a collaboration like the one we had with N.Peal was a godsend.”

Tune In Tonight for Lil Baby’s Performance at Howard U

Rap Life, Apple Music’s industry leading hip-hop playlist, will feature an important and meaningful live event captured on the campus of Howard University – one of the most historic and prestigious HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) in the world. This special live-streamed event aims to further extend the discussion around the many important issues impacting the Black community through open dialogue, important conversations, and the power of music.

Hosted by Apple Music’s global head of Hip-Hop and R&B, Ebro Darden along with Apple Music 1 hosts Nadeska and LowKey, the event will feature intimate conversations and bespoke performances from beloved rappers Lil Baby, Nas, Rapsody and Wale. As the events of 2020 continue to reveal the broken systems within our society, these artists stand out as incredibly passionate and outspoken advocates for their community, using both their music and social influence to promote issues like police reform, racial and gender equality, social justice, and standing up to racism.

“The Rap Life team’s main objective was to use our voice and tools to show support and solidarity with students, artists and activists around the nation rising up to make sure the world knows that Black Lives Matter,” Ebro said “We plan to bring Rap Life Live to more HBCU campuses because these institutions are part of the backbone of Black communities and Hip-Hop is from the Black experience.”

When asked why he wanted to participate, Lil Baby said, “I feel like we got a long way to go. I’d be lying if I said we are getting there. Don’t get me wrong it’s a start, but it’s going to take some time for this to work out.”

Wale said, “Black people need to understand and hear each other, combine our messaging and give it to the world.”

Rapsody said, “our voice is our biggest weapon. You have to speak up for what you want. You have to be the change. Speak to each other. Speak up, let people hear you.”

Nas said, “Whatever is going on in society, affects people. People affect society. And People are going to speak and artists are going to make art.”

Additionally, Rap Life Live will feature sit down interviews with Howard University students – including student association president Rachel Howell, Miss Howard University Taylor Davis and president of the 10for10 organization Peter Lubembela – providing a global platform to empower the next generation of leaders as they discuss how they are working to inspire, educate, unite and uplift their communities.

Sasha Sloan – Is It Just Me?

“Is It Just Me?” is full of Sasha’s candid and witty observations and brilliantly sharp and relatable lyrics that her fans relish. It follows the release of the poignant and brutally honest self-reflective track “House With No Mirrors” which Idolator called “…stunning…” and the critically praised first single “Lie” which has been called a  “…bittersweet bop…” by Idolator and declared a “…straight up radio hit…” by Billboard.

Sasha will be performing “Lie” on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on September 24th.

Additionally, Sasha has opened a fan community forum  that can be accessed by calling the number at the end of the “Lie” music video. Once in the community fans can leave Sasha notes, poems, lyrics and more which she will read and interact with providing an outlet for those who wish to express themselves through their creativity.

ABOUT SASHA SLOAN

After emerging in 2017 and appearing on a handful of high-profile collaborations, 25-year-old singer/songwriter Sasha Sloan released her debut single “Ready Yet.” Since then, she has established herself as a true wordsmith, an artist’s artist, who crafts potent melodies filled with poignant lyrics. As a songwriter Sasha has amassed over 3.5 billion streams by penning hits for some of today’s biggest artists. In 2018 Sasha released her first two EPs, Sad Girl and Loser. Her track “Normal” has been heralded by Billboard as a “catchy introvert anthem.”  These emotionally-rich, left-of-center pop releases lead to her late night debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2019 with a performance of “Older.” That year, Sasha completed her first North American and European headline tours (sold out) and released her 3rd and final EP Self Portrait, which had her single “Dancing With Your Ghost” as Idolator’s 6th “75 Best Pop Songs Of 2019.” She also recently scored a #1 on the Dance Chart for “I’ll Wait,” her collaboration with Kygo. Remarkably before she has released a debut album, Sasha has garnered over 2 billion streams worldwide to date.
