Dont Fret New Street Art

Dont Fret, one of Chicago’s most recognizable street artists, today unveiled a new, large-scale art installation on the Chicago Riverwalk. Titled The People in Your Neighborhood, the installation is located at the Riverwalk’s most western point, known as The Confluence between E Lake St and N Franklin St, and features 55 portraits of Chicagoans, all portrayed in Dont Fret’s inimitable sardonic style. The unveiling is accompanied by the release of his new book, Dont Fret: Life Thus Far, now available for purchase.

Offering a microcosmic reflection of Chicago’s scrappy and hard-working residents, the portrait subjects of The People in Your Neighborhood range from the well-known to the obscure. Designer and restaurateur Kevin Heisner stands alongside Claudio, Chicago’s beloved tamale vendor, who in turn rubs elbows with Maria, longtime owner of Maria’s Bridgeport and Howard Brown Health doctor Abby Baus. Each is depicted with both comedic and piercing insight, caricatures that are reminiscent of the archetypical Chicagoans who have lived in the city for generations. The portraits and subject bios can also be seen on Dont Fret’s Instagram page.

“There are certain character traits that I think define a true Chicagoan. Tough, full-browed with a sense of ingenuity and midwestern humbleness, but always toiling, working, moving forward with an almost absurd laugh and grin about this crazy, wonderful city,” said Dont Fret. “I was asked to paint 55 portraits of Chicagoans who I think contribute to the hard work that defines our city, although it can only scratch the surface of the millions of stories moving through our streets. These are the people in your neighborhood.”

“Dont Fret’s proposal for celebrating everyday Chicagoans who make our City go – from the beloved Tamale Man to artists to bridge engineers – was really appealing to enliven a long stretch of the Riverwalk that otherwise fades into the background,” said Lydia Ross, Director of Public Art at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “The artist’s distinctive style isn’t intended to capture an accurate portrait, but rather the heartfelt spirit of the great people that surround us, some of whom we know, some we recognize, others we may be more attuned to looking out for…it was conceived pre-COVID but felt even more resonant to celebrate people in the midst of social distancing.”

Dont Fret’s unpolished aesthetics paired with pithy one-liners are recognizable features of Chicago’s built environment, in addition to being painted and wheat-pasted on buildings around the world, from New York to Berlin, Miami, São Paulo, London and Helsinki. Don’t Fret: Life Thus Far, the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work, showcases a decade of his street and gallery work and features memories and anecdotes from fellow artists and friends including Louder Than A Bomb founder Kevin Coval, artist Cody Hudson and rapper Vic Mensa.

In the 256-page monograph, the figures and texts of consummate wise guy Dont Fret skewer the obvious and reflect the normalized-until-numbed issues of the city back at the passerby experiencing them firsthand. While his work populates city streets worldwide, he remains a true Wicker Park native, digging into the character(s) of Chicago—the stew of down-and-out and up-and-up, the meatpackers, the artists, the street-wise, and the stupid. Featuring 216 color images, this monograph also includes a foreword by writer and Brooklyn Street Art co-founder Steven P. Harrington.

In addition to The People in Your Neighborhood, the Chicago Riverwalk also recently unveiled a mural by Chicago-based artist Kate Lynn Lewis,The Radiance of Being, which celebrates 100 years of Art Deco. Lewis is also one of the 55 Chicagoans portrayed in Dont Fret’s installation. The Chicago Riverwalk has been going through a phased reopening which included the Community Marketplace opening July 17. Vendors are open by reservation for contact tracing purposes, walk-ups are welcome and will be asked for contact information. Vendor details are available at www.chicagoriverwalk.us.

JTV Jewelry Care

Knowing how to properly care for and clean your jewelry will help keep it sparkling for years to come, but it can be difficult to know the best way to clean them as different gemstones and metals require special care.

See below for expert tips from Kim Kanary, Certified Diamontologist and Vice President of Community Development & Engagement at JTV about important care details for many different gemstones on how to simply and safely clean your jewelry at home.

EXPERT TIPS FROM KIM KANARY:

Guidelines for Cleaning Jewelry:

  • Generally, you can use lukewarm water, mild dish soap or jewelry cleaner, a soft cloth, or a soft bristle toothbrush.
  • In a small bowl, prepare a cleaning solution by mixing two tablespoons of mild dishwashing liquid with one quart of lukewarm water. Or, if you are using a commercial jewelry cleaner, be sure to follow all instructions, and make sure the expiration date has not passed since an expired cleaner may be ineffective or perhaps even damage your jewelry.
  • To clean: soak for 10-20 minutes, gently brush all sides, rinse with clean water, pat dry with a clean cloth. You can repeat this as much as you’d like to achieve the desire cleanliness and appearance.

For Silver Jewelry:

  • First, try simply polishing it. To polish, use a silver or microfiber cloth and use long back-and-forth motions. Avoid rubbing in circles, as this can magnify small scratches.
  • If simple polishing doesn’t deliver the desired level of shine, following the cleaning guidelines above for a full cleaning of your jewelry.

For Gold Jewelry:

  • Follow the general cleaning guidelines above.

 For Gold-Plated Jewelry:

  • Rub gently with a soft cloth to restore shine.
  • If more cleaning is needed, follow the general cleaning guidelines above.

 For Earrings with Gemstones:

 Costume Earrings:

  • Because glue is often used to attach stones, be extra cautious when cleaning.
  • Wipe gently with a clean, damp cloth and use as little water as possible.
  • Dry with a soft, absorbent cloth.
  • Let air dry before wearing or storing.

How to keep your jewelry clean & sparkling:

  • Earrings should be the last thing you put on and first thing you take off.  This will help you avoid getting hair or other products on your earrings, which can dirty or damage them.
  • Wipe all jewelry with a soft, dry cloth when you take it off.
  • Be sure to properly store your jewelry.  If you prefer a jewelry box, place each piece in its own pouch or plastic bag.
  • Make sure jewelry is completely dry before storing.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry when bathing, swimming, or exercising

U.S. Postal Service In Danger

By Eamonn Burke

The coronavirus has ravaged the United States in the past six months, hitting small private businesses, especially minority -owned, very hard. There is also a major public service that has taken a devastating hit from the pandemic, and now from debates over mail-in voting.

A comprehensive detailing of the damages done to the Postal Service by the New York Times, including a daunting warning that the agency could run out of funds by the fall. The decision of whether to aid the service financially became a partisan one, in which the differing opinions on government interference came into play.

“The Postal Service is a joke,” said President Trump, who’s administration called off a potential $13 billion relief bill for the USPS and believes that the agency is responsible for its own financial issues, unless they comply with a series of alterations that would benefit private competitors.

Democrats were backed by large corporations that benefit from the USPS in their fight to save it. “We are for the public having the Postal Service meet the public interest, not some special interest” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

It may not be as divisive an issue as it seems, however. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka pointed out that the benefit on both sides of the aisle from the USPS would indicate that the fight to save it may not be so evenly split between the two parties.

Delays in mailing have been experienced throughout the country since the pandemic broke, in cities like Philadelphia. Mail workers in the city say that the new pressures to cut spending, staff, and work hours are causing backlogs of mail. These can be a huge problem when the mail contains essential items like food or medicine. “I try to stay by him and pray for life that I have what I need to take care of him,” says Valerie Rice of her young grandson whom she orders medicine for. Meanwhile, a USPS spokesman assures that the agency is “flexing our available resources to match the workload created by the impacts of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic” and that they “appreciate the patience of our customers.”

The public has started to act, helping to fund the service indirectly through purchases of stamps and other USPS goods from the UPS gift shop. Hashtags like #SaveUPS and #DontDefundUPS have gone around Twitter.

The latest development surrounding the USPS is the controversy over mail-in voting, which Trump has sworn will rig the outcome of the election in November, even though evidence has proven this claim wrong. The new guidelines imposed by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy are opposed by the union as they slow down mail and have been criticized as a way for Trump to impair mail-in voting.

As a public service that cannot conserve funds by decreasing production, the agency is in a tough spot and faces an uncertain future.

NEW INSTALLATIONS

Stevan Dohanos painting, “Tex’s Motorcycle”

Dohanos, a frequent contributor to the “Saturday Evening Post,” enjoyed capturing his subjects as they were in real life. For this newly installed piece, Dohanos found his muse on a street in Georgetown, Connecticut. “Tex” Keller had decorated his saddle bags with nickel spots and covered his saddle with fur, putting his own flair on the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Though Dohanos probably didn’t title the work, many motorcyclists now refer to it as “Tex’s Motorcycle” and prints of it can be found in shops across the country. Now the original has found a home at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon”

A recently recovered cache of architectural drawings includes plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. The pencil drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon” provides a snapshot of Harley-Davidson’s formative years and illustrates a chapter of Milwaukee history when the city was known as the “Machine Shop to the World.”

THE SHOP

T.50 Car illustration by Mina Tocalini of 360 MAGAZINE for use by 360 MAGAZINE.

Gordon Murray Automotive – T.50 Supercar

Gordon Murray Automotive has unveiled its T.50 supercar in full for the first time, showing the finished exterior and interior design and confirming its ground-breaking technical specifications. The T.50 has been engineered to be the purest, lightest, most driver-centric supercar ever.

Improving on his acclaimed McLaren F1 “in every conceivable way”, Professor Gordon Murray CBE is leading the team that will begin building customer versions of the 986kg supercar in January 2022. Justifying its £2.36m (before taxes) price tag, the T.50 promises to deliver an unsurpassed driving experience. It is powered by a 100% bespoke 3.9-litre, 663PS V12 engine that revs to a record-breaking 12,100rpm, and features the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car – aided by a 400mm rear-mounted fan.

The global premiere is the first time the clean lines of the exterior and the driver-focused interior have been seen. From his first ballpoint sketches, to every engineering and design detail, Murray has led the Gordon Murray Automotive team and briefed and overseen suppliers to drive the project forward at an unrelenting pace. Murray’s design for T.50 was the 50th in a prestigious line of race and road cars he’s penned over his illustrious 50-year career – both reasons combining to name the car T.50.

The most dominant characteristics of the T.50 exterior design are its purity and balance, free from the wings, skirts and vents that adorn most modern-day supercars. The clean surfaces are enabled by the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car, resulting in deliberately simple, beautiful lines and a timeless appearance.

The purity of the silhouette is broken dramatically when the pair of dihedral doors rise up and forwards, coming to rest high above the passenger cabin. Inside, the driver-centric approach is plain to see – from the central, jet fighter-like driving position, to the aerospace-grade primary and secondary controls arranged in an ‘ergonomic bubble’ around the driver.

Quality of materials, the utmost precision, and simplicity of visuals define the whole car, but nowhere is this more evident than inside the cockpit. British suppliers are responsible for every major component throughout the interior, as well as every facet of the car’s exquisitely engineered underpinnings – an attribute insisted upon by Murray who was determined the T.50 would be a true British sports car.

From the record-breaking V12 engine, and best lightweight transmission, to the world-first aerodynamic package and the feather-light titanium throttle pedal, every element is 100% bespoke and crafted by a British company that leads in its field. Murray pushed each supplier to their limits to deliver ingenuity, the highest quality and of course new levels of lightness.

With a vision that the car, and every element of its componentry, would be considered ‘engineering art’, Murray set out to create a vehicle that surpassed all others, fostering new levels of pride and connection among owners. Every T.50 customer has the opportunity to meet Murray to discuss their car and personalise it inside and out. Part of this process includes a seat, steering wheel and pedals ‘fitting’ session – personalised to every owner – that will ensure the T.50 is ergonomically perfect and individualised for each discerning customer.

Lukas Nelson ’56 Les Paul Junior Available

For the Lukas Nelson ’56 Les Paul Junior spec sheet and info: Here.

By leveraging its iconic past and leaning into an innovative future, Gibson has set the stage for the next era of shaping sound for present and future with instruments that nurture new players across generations and genres of music. Gibson and Lukas Nelson have announced today, theyߣll release the first-ever Gibson USA Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior. Later tonight, tune-in to watch a Live Q&A with Lukas Nelson about his musical history and songwriting at 7:00pm CTon Gibson TV. Lukas will answer questions from fans and share a special announcement from his studio in Los Angeles, tonight at 7:00pm CT/5:00pm PT/8:00pm ET,all on Gibson TV.
Lukas Nelson knows all about legacies, indeed he’s been hard at work carving his own for most of his young, but extremely eventful life. This customized Gibson Les Paul Junior is inspired by Lukas Nelson’s own 1956 Junior. “The beauty of this guitar is that it is very versatile with the sound. In fact, I can get a lot of different tones just from the P90 and the way that I attack the strings and through the intonation and the vibrato that I give,” says Lukas Nelson. If I hit it lighter, it doesn’t break up as much. If I get into it, it gets a lot of grit and dirt and breaks up. It’s a versatile tone, which Iߣm pretty grateful for. Frankly, Gibson has been nothing but incredible to us to me since I’ve met them. And this guitar has taken me on a long journey. It’s taken me to some amazing places, and I hope that a lot of other people get the same opportunity with their version of my guitar.

With his primary focus as the front man of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Realover the release of six studio albums, four Eps and world tours, Lukas and the band have evolved into an emergent and vital force in American music. In song after song, on stage after stage, Lukas and POTR have sharpened the edges of their singular sound, one that nods to their influences while also pushing forward into uncharted territory. The never-ending road also beckons with additional projects, Lukas and his band POTR’s frequent performances as Neil Young’s band and of course, performances alongside his father in Willie Nelson & Family.

Lukas and Gibson’s Luthiers worked closely to develop his Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior. Several prototypes were road tested by Lukas on tour over this past year and the end result is Lukas’s vision. Based off his beloved 1956 Les Paul Junior which has been his main guitar for several years, the Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior is rooted in tradition with some modern enhancements. Like his original, the single cutaway slab Mahogany body, and neck are crafted of genuine Mahogany for its resonant tonal characteristics and moderate weight. The fat 50’s-style neck profile feels smooth and comfortable while providing rigidity and sustain. It features a Rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays and medium jumbo frets for a vintage feel with modern playability. Finished in a deluxe satin Vintage Sunburst, this shade was developed to capture the same vintage patina of his original. The single, dog-ear P-90 pickup features Alnico III magnets and is voiced to replicate the tonal response that Lukas requires. The single volume and tone controls have gold speed knobs (as used in 1956) and are hand-wired featuring an orange drop capacitor and original spec 500k vintage audio taper pots. The aged nickel-plated hardware includes Vintage Deluxe strip style tuners w/ white buttons like the originals but feature a higher gear ratio for improved performance. The 50’s style wraparound bridge provides the same look and solid resonance as the original, but it is made with a stealthy compensation contour to improve intonation accuracy. The new Gibson USA Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior will officially be available worldwide at all Authorized Gibson Dealers in August 2020.

Earlier this year, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real released Naked Garden via Fantasy Records. A companion to the group’s highly acclaimed 2019 LP, Turn Off The News (Build A Garden), this 15-track collectioncaptures the joyful spirit and creative intensity of POTR’s News with previously unreleased songs and alternate cuts that came out of those sessions at Shangri-La and Village Studios. Wide-ranging in scope and minimalist production Naked Garden embodies the band’s shared spiritual connection and consummate musical chemistry. Guitarist/vocalist Lukas Nelson and his band, Promise of the Real which is rounded out by bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony LoGerfo, percussionist Tato Melgarand multi-instrumentalist Logan Metz, teamed with John Alagia to produce Naked Garden. A few of the album’s many highlights includes the studio version of fan favorite Entirely Different Stars, the plaintive romance of Movie In My Mind, a rough, early-stage version of Bad Case, and Lukas’ unearthly falsetto on the classic country waltz, The Way You Say Goodbye.
