Bridging the GAP

By Armon Hayes × Emily Bunn

Hip-hop icon and culture curator Kanye West announces his 10 year collaboration yesterday with America’s sweetheart brand GAP. Identified as the #WestDayEver, Kanye’s tweet comes as a major displacement in the fashion industry which no one expected. A media frenzy reminiscent of Beyoncé’s Adidas × Ivy Park collaboration as well as Rihanna x Puma is verified for lines of anticipation forming now set to release 2021.

Offerings include men, women, children and possibly home. It’s premature to speculate on design details; however, fans can assume chique yet simple urban duds shared by both Yeezy and the GAP. The household name established in 1969 proves its resilience and continues to reinvent itself. At a time where diversity and equality is at the cutting edge of pop culture, the GAP boardroom is no stranger to utilizing their voice for justice.

According to CNN, on the day of the announcement GAP’s stocks have significantly increased.

Today, Kanye dropped the first piece of merchandise from the collaboration: the Yeezy “Round Jacket.” The cobalt blue puffer jacket was revealed on Gap’s Instagram when they posted a caption-less, silent video showcasing the garment.

The jacket is also being highlighted in various locations across Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago. At four separate locations in all three cities, floating projections of the jacket are displayed.

Shoppers can pre-order the stylish jacket for fall HERE. Currently, the garment is sold out on GAP’s website, and is only available to customers in the US.

Further, today marks Kanye‘s 44th birthday! Surely, the successful release of the Yeezy “Round Jacket” is a birthday gift for both Kanye and his fans.

Saudi Summer

The Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) has unveiled a new campaign, called Saudi Summer, to encourage residents to explore the Kingdom this year, in lieu of a holiday abroad, following the lifting of lockdown restrictions due to Covid-19.

The campaign launch follows extensive research* by STA, revealing that 57 percent of Saudi residents are concerned about travelling on holiday by plane, but 85 percent are still planning to take a break of around ten days this year. 78 percent expressed curiosity in exploring their country.

“Saudi Summer comes as a wonderful opportunity to discover multiple tourist destinations in KSA, alongside its historical, natural and cultural treasures. The campaign also contributes to enhancing efforts by the Ministry of Tourism to revive the tourism sector, which was most affected by the repercussions of the Covid-19 crisis,” said His Excellency Ahmed Al Khateeb, Minister of Tourism for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the STA.

Starting from 25 June and running until 30 September 2020, the Saudi Summer campaign is promoting ten locations across the nation. The ten areas are: Jeddah and KAEC; Abha; Tabuk; Khobar, Dammam and Ahsa; Al Baha; Al Taif; Yanbu and Umluj; and Riyadh.

Together, these locations offer fertile valleys, quiet beaches, dense forests, cool climates, mountain peaks, buzzing cities, historic villages and more. Travelers are encouraged to visit multiple destinations to take advantage of the different packages and activities available, from sea trips and diving, to museum visits and hiking.

“The tourism sector resumes its activities with a renewed spirit and great hopes for moving forward at an accelerated pace, to achieve our aspirations in harmony with Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to pursue economic diversification, attract investments, increase revenues and create job opportunities for citizens,” said H.E. Ahmed Al Khateeb.

Saudi Summer is led by the STA in close collaboration with the private sector. The STA’s main role is to position the Kingdom as one of the leading tourism destinations in the world, by developing its tourism product and promoting it on a global scale.

“The Florida native’s pop sensibilities have him poised for stardom” The FADER

“might just set the blueprint for the future of modern pop stars” GQ Australia

“embodies the hazy, genre-less future of popular music.” The New Yorker

Today, Florida-native Dominic Fike shares a new song and video. “Chicken Tenders” is the first taste of Fike’s forthcoming debut album for Columbia Records, the release of which he recently delayed in light of protests across America, which he addressed in addition to detailing his own history with police brutality in a powerful essay he shared with fans. This past week, he spoke with Brockhampton’s Kevin Abstract for a conversation that further contextualized the forthcoming album as well as appeared in Anderson. Paak’s “Lockdown” video that poignantly expresses the protests taking place across the United States.

Directed by Jack Begert, the video for “Chicken Tenders” is a surrealist four minute visual that follows him through his psyche after hastily waking up in his hotel room. The song follows a slew of 2019 singles that include his Omar Apollo collaboration “Hit Me Up” and “Phone Numbers,” the latter of which was performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Kenny Beats and saw an Aidan Cullen-directed music video that featured Halsey. Since releasing his debut EP, Don’t Forget About Me, Demos, via Columbia Records in 2018, Dominic Fike has continued to rise as one of his generation’s most enigmatic emerging pop stars. 2019 saw his hit single “3 Nights” reach #1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in September, Dom appear on the covers of BRICK and Notion Magazine in addition to marquee features in The FADER, Interview Magazine etc, and tour the world on his sold out Rain or Shine tour. Listen to and watch “Chicken Tenders” above and stay tuned for more from Dominic Fike coming soon.

Marshmellow, Halsey, 360 MAGAZINE

MARSHMELLO × HALSEY

Marshmello and Halsey shared the official video for their hit single, “Be Kind.” Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, who also helmed Halsey’s “Nightmare” and “Alone” clips, the contemporary dance video takes viewers to three distinct worlds. View the video, which received a YouTube premiere earlier today, HERE. Filming a dance video during quarantine presented challenges, but Halsey learned the choreography on Facetime and did her own makeup, as always.

“Be Kind” is a worldwide hit across the boards – on playlists (with both artists appearing most recently on the cover of Apple Music’s “Today’s Hits”), at radio, on Shazam and elsewhere. Since its release last month, the song has amassed more than 175 million combined global streams. Get “Be Kind” at http://bekindxx.com/. The Jacques Lu Cont remix was released yesterday and can be heard HERE. Surf Mesa, fresh off his global hit “ily (i love you baby)” feat. Emilee, has also remixed “Be Kind.” Listen HERE.

Landon Cube – Eighties

Maryland bred singer-songwriter Landon Cube releases his new track “Eighties” feat. 24KGoldn today. On the track, new-wave synths blare beneath vocals from Landon Cube, while 24KGoldn pops off with an undeniable verse of his own.

“Eighties” follows the releases of “Groceries” and “Drugs” as well as a string of releases in 2019 including “Pretty” feat. 24kGoldn. The track received over 5 million streams in the first couple of months of release and was included on Spotify’s Most Necessary and Clout Culture playlist. His EP Orange has garnered over 70 million streams worldwide since its release and features previously released tracks “20,” “17,” “Nuisance” and “Makeup,” which received over 1 million streams in the first month of its release.

Both tracks came after his previously released tracks “Round n Round” feat. Sprite Lee (15+ million streams), “Drive My Car” (14+ million streams) and “19” (9+ million streams). He also appeared on Lil Skies’ “Nowadays” and “Red Roses,” which both garnered over 250 million streams individually. The singer wrapped up his first headlining tour last fall and went on a national tour with Iann Dior.

There’s a poignant yet feel-good vibe that makes 22-year-old recording artist Landon Cube’s sound infectious. The Southern Maryland native has a diverse history within music, punctuated by his versatile catalog. At 16, he made the firm decision that music was his chosen trajectory and once he graduated high school, he dropped his introductory cut “Euphoria.” His participation with local viral video crew Cufboys added fuel to the fire, as Landon began galvanizing a fan base through his laid-back authenticity and knack for melding sounds.

Through Cufboys he met burgeoning star Lil Skies, as the two joined forces on cuts like “Red Roses” and “Nowadays.” It wasn’t long before Landon was Los Angeles bound and continued his upward mobility as an artist, ultimately joining the Republic Records roster. Landon Cube, who already has nearly 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, has already secured a solid following based upon his honest and heartfelt music, and the next phase in his career will bring more of that to the forefront.

360 Magazine, Breakbot 'Be Mine Tonight'

Breakbot – Translight

Breakbot has today unveiled a much needed feel-good new disco tune Translight . This is the 2nd and final track from Breakbot’s Be Mine Tonight EP out in full today on Ed Banger Records/ Because Music.

Translight is another classic Breakbot record, delicately blending elements of disco and French house. Often prone to collaborations, Breakbot has forgone a vocalist on Translight, instead crafting a weightless groove around a hypnotic vocal loop, accompanied by some groovy rhythm guitars and shimmering synths. It’s a track that will allow listeners to briefly escape the current global calamity and bask in sexy sounds of the beloved French producer.

Breakbot released the EP’s title track “Be Mine Tonight” back in April, premiered on PAPER. The instrumental of Be Mine Tonight was actually used to soundtrack a Chanel ad campaign featuring super producer Pharrell, American actress Margaret Qualley, Belgian pop singer Angèle, French actress Isabelle Adjani and French singer/songwriter Sébastien Tellier.

Breakbot was slated to tour North America throughout April, but all of his tour dates were canceled in light of the pandemic. Fortunately Breakbot has continued to satisfy fans throughout quarantine, releasing two excellent tracks and a delightfully uplifting Lockdown Boogie mix.

Frank Zappa – The Mothers 1970

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Frank Zappa’s heralded but short-lived 1970 Mothers Of Invention lineup, The Mothers 1970, a new 4CD and digital collection of 70 unreleased live and studio recordings, is now available via Zappa Records/UMe. To celebrate this momentous release, co-producers Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers will host a special virtual listening party today, Friday, June 26 at 12 pm PDT/3 pm EDT, where everyone can collectively listen together to the unreleased studio recordings engineered by the then-unknown producer Roy Thomas Baker, which make up disc 1, while the hosts discuss the creation of The Mothers 1970 and the unreleased performances, tell stories about Zappa and answer questions. To join the party, click here.

Fans can also get into the spirit and show their love for Zappa on Instagram with a new filter unveiled today that superimposes his trademark mustache and soul patch onto their face. Click here to access the filter on the official Frank Zappa Instagram and Zappa-ify yourself.

Overseen by the Zappa Trust and produced by Ahmet Zappa and Joe Travers, The Mothers 1970 collects together more than four hours of previously unreleased performances by the celebrated lineup which lasted roughly seven months: Aynsley Dunbar (drums), George Duke (piano/keys/trombone), Ian Underwood (organ/keys/guitar), Jeff Simmons (bass/vocals) and Flo & Eddie aka Howard Kaylan (vocals) and Mark Volman (vocals/percussion) of The Turtles who performed under these aliases to skirt contractual limitations of performing under their own names. This iteration of The Mothers, which likely began rehearsals fifty years ago in May 1970, came to an end in January of 1971 when Simmons quit the band during the making of the “200 Motels” movie.

The Mothers 1970 encapsulates the band’s brief but productive span, which included two visits to the studio – resulting in the fantastic 1970 album, Chunga’s Revenge – and tours across the U.S., Canada and Europe. Divided into four parts, the collection is anchored by top notch studio recordings recorded at the famed London-based Trident Studios on June 21-22 with a then-unknown producer in the engineer chair by the name of Roy Thomas Baker, several years before he’d go on to have massive success working with Queen, The Cars and Alice Cooper to name a few. An unreleased early mix by Baker of the Chunga’s Revenge track, “Sharleena,” is just one of the many highlights of the studio recordings that also boasts several unearthed rough mixes of the Zappa/Simmons co-write, “Wonderful Wino,” including a rare version that showcases vocals and an alternate guitar solo by Zappa that has been lost to the ages as the original multitrack stems were recorded over. Of the material recorded during this two-day span, “Sharleena” was the only song ever officially released – so tracks like “Red Tubular Lighter,” “Giraffe” and an unheard version of “Envelopes” are completely brand new to fans half a century later.

The band’s live prowess is represented with a slew of concert recordings, including the first official release of the off bootlegged “Piknik” performance originally broadcast on Dutch radio station VRPO, and live performances from concerts in Santa Monica, Calif. And Spokane, Wash. which have been edited together and presented as a hybrid concert since both shows were not fully captured. The release is rounded out with a selection of live highlights recorded around the U.S., interspersed with candid moments recorded in dressing rooms, motel lobbies and the stage by Zappa who took his personal UHER recorder everywhere. All recordings comprising The Mothers 1970 were sourced from their original tapes discovered in The Vault and digitally transferred and compiled by Travers in 2020. Some tracks were mixed by longtime Zappa Trust associate Craig Parker Adams and the collection was mastered by John Polito at Audio Mechanics.

It wasn’t until 1971 when Zappa would start documenting his gigs with a ½” 4-track recorder so the 1970 tours were not captured in typical fashion. Instead Zappa recorded as much as he could using his personal UHER recorder and it is these recordings that make up the second half of The Mothers 1970. Because of the nature of the recordings it was almost virtually impossible for Zappa to record full shows due to the limitations of the tape recorder and the fact he would oftentimes personally spool tape on the machine on stage while playing. Occasionally Zappa would have the soundman set up the recorder in the venue to tape the concert.  This resulted in ambient recordings which was the case for the Santa Monica and Spokane recordings as well as the live performances that make up the final disc. Similar to the Gail Zappa-created “Road Tapes” live series, these recordings contain audience noise allowing listeners to experience what it was like to be there. The set lists focus heavily on songs from the albums Freak Out!, Absolutely Free, We’re Only In It For The Money, Uncle Meat, the then-recently released Burnt Weeny Sandwich, and early workings of songs that would eventually be released months later on Chunga’s Revenge. Some of the many highlights include the extended guitar workouts, the first version of “Easy Meat” and rare live performances of “Would You Go All The Way?” and “Road Ladies.”

Following Zappa’s especially productive year of 1969 (which saw him record and release several albums, including Uncle Meat and Hot Rats, produce Captain Beefheart’s outsider classic, Trout Mask Replica, as well as the one and only album for The GTO’s), the musician disbanded the original Mothers Of Invention and started experimenting with smaller lineups. Through a variety of circumstances and several chance encounters, Zappa began to assemble his new group of collaborators, with the only original Mother being Ian Underwood. As Travers writes in the enlightening liner notes, which also include a wealth of live and behind-the-scenes photos from this era: “It’s no secret that Frank was excited about this group. The cast of characters and their personalities, musically and personally, made for a very eventful and humorous chapter in Zappa’s career. Frank had a blast with these guys. Their sound was unique, their humor was like no other and yet their time was ultimately short lived.”

Fleeting as it may have been, this camaraderie is on full display and will now live on forever as the exciting new collection, The Mothers1970.

Ray LaMontagne – MONOVISION

Grammy Award winning artist Ray LaMontagne releases his eighth studio album MONOVISION today via RCA Records. The 10-track album sees Ray not only writing and producing the album once again but also includes added duties of engineering as well as performing all the instruments for the tracks. Already receiving praise from the critics, The Associated Press called the album, “stunningly refreshing,” while No Depression said MONOVISION is “one that best represents his artistic core,” and American Songwriter states, “Both LaMontagne’s craftsmanship in the composition of these songs and his easygoing, unaccompanied playing will come as comfort food to established followers who should welcome this most organic return to his roots.”  Internationally, MOJO’s 4 star review claimed MONOVISION is “further proof LaMontagne is among the finest singers of his generation” while Uncut Magazine gave the album 7 out of 10 rating.

Strong Enough ” is currently soaring up the AAA chart having already closed the panel. The track is the #1 greatest gainer at the format and just about to reach the Top 10. Ray LaMontagne has released 8 studio albums, 6 of which have reached Top 10 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and Billboard’s Digital Albums chart.  Additionally, his 2010 album God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise won the Grammy for Best Folk Album and was nominated in the coveted Song of The Year category for “Beg Steal or Borrow.” Each release from his catalogue over the last 16 years carries its own character and feel. Having worked with producers Ethan Johns, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Ray’s vast sonic catalogue has been called everything from “a perfect throwback to the lost art of the album-length format,” from Entertainment Weekly to “epic and magical,” from Rolling Stone and “gorgeous and ambitious,” from Esquire.  NPR’s All Things Considered said that Ray throughout the course of his career “has continued to push himself in different directions,” while People called Ray a “marvel of nature.”
