Tech x Press Freedom

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

The Reporters Committee urged a federal court on Friday to deny the Trump administration’s request for an emergency order that would block the publication and distribution of a highly anticipated memoir written by former National Security Adviser John Bolton. In a friend-of-the-court brief filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the Reporters Committee argued that the requested injunction amounts to an unconstitutional prior restraint. “Such an extraordinarily broad injunction would be a clear prior restraint that violates long-settled constitutional law,” said Bruce Brown, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. “The court must reject this effort to censor the free flow of information to the public about government activities.”

In addition to Trump’s response to Bolton’s published memoir, several journalists were targeted in a large-scale hacking operation. After a journalist contacted The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto in 2017 about a suspicious phishing attempt, researchers recently uncovered a huge hack-for-hire operation, dubbed “Dark Basin,” that targeted thousands of people in journalism, business, banking, law, and especially the nonprofit sector.

Researchers linked Dark Basin to BellTroX InfoTech Services, an Indian tech firm owned by Sumit Gupta. Gupta, who in 2015 was indicted on federal hacking charges in California, denied the allegations in an interview with Reuters.

Dark Basin targeted a range of organizations and, in several cases, the journalists connected to them. For example, hackers attempted to infiltrate American environmental advocacy groups, including the Rockefeller Family Fund, Greenpeace, and 350.org, as well as “multiple major US media outlets” who covered the groups’ work on the #ExxonKnew climate change campaign. The hackers also targeted Free Press and Fight for the Future, organizations that advocate for open internet policies.

Despite the danger, a recent report by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism found that many journalists are not particularly careful with their digital security. In newsrooms short on time and money, digital security may seem like an unnecessary burden, and some journalists believe as long as they are not covering “sensitive” topics they will not be targeted. Often newsrooms that adopt security protocols do so informally, with some journalists becoming trainers for others.

Trump Rally Fails

By Eamonn Burke

Despite the continually grim forecasts of COVID-19, which is spiking in almost half of the states in the country right now, and the many warnings of experts, President Trump carried through with his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma yesterday.

The rally, originally scheduled for Juneteenth but pushed ahead so as to not disrespect the holiday, was one of the first large gatherings planned since the coronavirus outbreak began. The participants were not required to wear a mask or social distance, but they were required to sign a liability form agreeing not to sue the President’s campaign if they did contract the virus.

The rally turned out to be a failure, and Trump was not happy. It was claimed that almost one million people had bought tickets, and yet just under 6,200 people actually showed. This ruined Trump’s image of sold out arenas and hoards of crowds, and Trump responded by allegedly lashing out at aides, giving a poor speech, and of course, taking to Twitter trying to change the subject. Trump also attempted to blame protestors outside of the rally who wouldn’t let audience members in.

Reason for a mild turnout is largely believed to be the very real fears of the coronavirus, which Trump has been downplaying and even, in the case of this rally, acting against. However, there is also a more exciting story behind the empty seats: the viral social media platform Tik-Tok became the base for an organized effort to upend the rally, by spreading the message to purchase tickets without going to the event. Fans of Korean Pop, or K-Pop, also joined together under this effort. Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale dismissed the teens as “Leftists and online trolls doing a victory lap’” but it cannot be denied that this had an effect on the outcome of the rally.

Trump plans to hold another rally soon, but it is yet to be known whether or not he will comply with the safety measures necessary or just ignore them again.

Justice Comes Alive

On Sunday, June 28th, Justice Comes Alive—a brand new, one-day, donation-based virtual event—will unite the live music community to raise funds and awareness for organizations empowering Black communities, keeping people out of the criminal justice system, and working to dismantle the systemic racism which persists in our society.

In partnership with the PLUS1 For Black Lives Fund, proceeds raised during the day-long event will directly benefit participating artists as well as  organizations like Equal Justice Initiative, Impact Justice and The Bail Project, as well as Black and Indigenous-led grassroots organizations combating racism. Justice Comes Alive is also proud to partner with HeadCount to further encourage voter participation.

Fans can donate any amount to participate and are encouraged to make their contributions early in order to secure a spot at the show via JusticeComesAlive.com. Those who opt to donate in advance will receive a link to stream the event across various platforms on the morning of the show.

The all-day livestream marathon will feature new live performances from 50+ artists captured during the ongoing lockdown specifically for Justice Comes Alive. The new content will be created by the artists in a variety of ways, from socially distant studio sessions to remote video collaborations to crowd-less sets at venues around the country.

After raising over $170,000 during the inaugural Quarantine Comes Alive event, which directly benefited participating artists and PLUS1’s COVID-19 Relief Fund, the creators of QCA and mainstay events Brooklyn Comes Alive and Denver Comes Alive felt obliged to shift their focus to matters of racial inequality facing our nation.

Kunj Shah, president and founder of Live for Live Music and producer of Justice Comes Alive, says “Waking up the morning after Quarantine Comes Alive was bittersweet. On one hand, we raised a lot of money for some incredible causes, that will be helping a ton of people for years to come, on the other hand, the world was finally waking up to racial inequality in our justice system and everyday lives. I felt a responsibility to use our resources and platform once more to create an experience where people can enjoy music while helping those in need and educating themselves on the current issues facing our society today with the help of the Black musicians who make up this beautiful community. Quarantine has also taught me that the power of music is too potent for it to be wasted on something as simple as profit margins. Because of that, I’ve also pledged that all shows I produce moving forward will benefit a cause dear to our hearts in some way. We hope this event helps Justice, finally, Come Alive.”

In between performances, Justice Comes Alive co-hosts Nikki Glaspie (The Nth Power), Nigel Hall (Lettuce), Alvin Ford Jr (Dumpstaphunk), James Casey (Trey Anastasio Band), and Robert Sput Searight (Ghost-Note), alongside Ari Fink of Sirius XM, will lead conversations with speakers providing a platform to discuss systemic racism, how to combat it, and what can be done to bring about these changes.

Featured speakers include Terence Blanchard, Oteil Burbridge, Christian McBride, Karl Denson, Patrice Rushen, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, and more. A full list of Justice Comes Alive featured musical performers and guest speakers can be found here.

Kupah James Tips

Born in Boston Massachusetts, raised by a single parent and baby sister, I didn’t have many material things, but mother instilled important values and love. After college graduation, I began my own Luxury Dj company, “Klass Universal Entertainment.” In 2015, I moved to LA in pursuit of fitness and entertainment. Most recently, I became the creator of “BodyWeight BootKAMP,” a mix of upper and lower exercises with a balance of core for a total body workout in 45min.

Top 5: Explore new friendships and teammates who uplift and motivate you; this can be a key factor in pushing yourself forward. Remove any and all toxic friends who always seem to have that negative perspective but swear that they are just trying to “help”…. NEXT….

Treat yourself: Feeling confident in what you wear can change your whole mood! Who doesn’t want to feel good in what we put on? A little retail therapy never hurt nobody. 2XU and Rhone are two brands I use a lot and they are unisex, so we got both Men and Women gear.

Discover and Recover: (A day off is not a day lost): Stretching is key. Taking the time to give your body the TLC it deserves will only help you get better the next time you strap up. Our bodies are our temples and we must invest and take care of them. Mobility helps in lots of ways, aside from just working out. The looser our bodies feel, the easier it is to #MakeMoves

Personal/Virtual Trainer: Sometimes we need that extra push. A personal trainer can be a great motivator, provide support, and hold you accountable for those really hard days. Still nervous from COVID-19, there is an abundance of Virtual trainers (I’m one of them) who would be happy to get you moving around.

AM vs. PM: Regardless of when you “like” to work out, challenge your mind and body into reversing your routine (if possible). You might discover something new about yourself. Like your routine so much you don’t want to change? All good – add a smaller work out to the beginning or end of your day just to balance it out.

What’s for Dinner: You are what you eat, eat a Dorito, feel like a Dorito. Spice it up, be creative, allow for mistakes, and practice makes perfect. Pro tip: Nutrition is just as important, if not more, as your fitness regimen. Don’t pity yourself with self-guilt and seek a balance.

Monthly challenge: Within a challenge, you are committing to a goal. Use every day to inch towards that goal, so make it fun and playful. Fitness doesn’t have to be boring or lack motivation. Grab a friend and take on a challenge, make deals, and have an award system that celebrates the winners, yet still provides a feeling of success for your teammates (aka LOSERS).

Fitness tracker (Apple Watch, Fitbit, etc): If buying clothes (refer to Tip 2) doesn’t get your heart rate up enough, add a Fitness Tracker to that cart before checking out. Apple Watch is a great way to track your progress and your friends at the same time. You can compete for 7 days and chase awards daily, monthly, etc. Get in the Game

Physical Alarm clock: Taking it back to the old school days. Not a ton of money but a good investment. Place it somewhere you have to get out of bed in order to shut it off. Bodies can become robots when that lovely alarm clock goes off and snooze feels way too good. Having it out of reach forces you to get up and turn it off, and while you’re up, you might as well get some steps in.

Virtual or (in-person) class: Double down on which version works for you OR try the other way. Not everyone likes one or the other and you have the right to choose. Just be open-minded to other ways of keeping the body guessing. You never know, you might even use muscles you didn’t know you had and we all know how much fun that is, NOT

1. What was the biggest inspiration that got you to where you are now in the music industry?

Growing up, I always loved “putting on a show” or performing. I would watch videos of Britney Spears and *NSYNC and dream to be on stage one day. My mom has always been and will always be my inspiration and number one supporter because she’s always supported me while following my dreams and has never given up on me!

2. Which song of yours are you most proud of, and why?

I would say my new song “Hola” because it is the first song that I released through Pitbull’s label Mr. 305. Signing to him and his label was such an amazing moment in my life and I can’t wait for the world to hear the rest of the music I have in store!

3. How did you first get involved with acting, and how has it contributed to your overall skills and experience in the entertainment industry?

I have actually been acting since I was about 8 years old. As I said before, I have always loved putting on a show and being in front of the camera. I think being a good actor really helps portray my emotions/feelings through my dancing and music. I really feel they all go hand and hand.

4. What has been one of the most memorable experiences working with another artist, and why?

JLO JLO JLO! Anyone that knows me/follows me knows how obsessed I am with her and to be able to have had the opportunity to meet and film a video with her was truly a dream come true! Throughout the years, we have always had a lot of similarities and I would love to one day do a song with her or be in a movie with her. Fingers crossed!

5. What kinds of messages do you intend to communicate to your different audiences and fans?

I hope to always promote positivity and inspire anyone who ever watches my content or listens to my music. I am so grateful to have such amazing supporters from all around the world and I want them to always know that I am here for them for whatever they are going through and that they are not alone.

6. How have you been able to juggle dancing, acting, singing, songwriting, and much more?

It definitely isn’t easy, but when you truly love what you do, you make it work! I am almost obsessed with what I do and love it so much that I never want to stop! I also think life is about balance and I try to balance everything so that I don’t overwhelm myself.

7. In what ways do you feel empowered, and how can you spread this sense of empowerment to others?

I feel most empowered when I make someone else happy or feel good. Helping others has always been a huge passion of mine so when I see other people feeling empowered, it empowers me!

8. After getting into the modeling world very early in your life, how did this help you progress your later pursuits?

Starting to model at an early age really taught me a lot about what hard work and discipline meant. I think it also got me to be even more comfortable with myself and truly love who I was !

9. If you were to give your younger self some advice about “making it” in the realm of entertainment, what would it be?

I know this might sound “cliche,” but it would be to never give up and never let other people bring you down. I was extremely sensitive growing up (I still am) but I would always worry about what other people thought of me. Now with social media, I know it’s really hard to not let what other people say affect you, but if you believe in and don’t give up on yourself, I promise you that your dreams will come true!

10. What’s the next major goal you hope to achieve as an artist?

My all-time dream goal is to go on tour and meet/perform for all of my amazing fans around the world. I also hope to continue putting out music and keep inspiring!

Lute Discusses Mental Health Struggle

While in quarantine, many people have been given the time to face obstacles they’ve chosen to ignore or push aside in the past. The reason for the delay may vary from person to person but it’s never easy to finally confront that issue. For Lute (Dreamville/Interscope Records), he’s now comfortable enough to share with the world his anxiety and his turbulent relationship with it. “Quarantine gave me time to reflect and really take a look at myself in the mirror, so I did,” he said in an exclusive quote. He continued, “Now I want to show y’all what I’ve seen.” In the sixth episode of Gold Mouf Chronicles, he sits with director Alexander Hall and his manager Dho over the phone, to talk through his extended trip to Los Angeles earlier this year from North Carolina and how not being able to record music in a studio for his album due to Covid-19 has aggravated his anxiety. Watch the episode HERE.

In the two very personally revealing conversations, Lute discusses how multiple family members also have anxiety and that when he was young he had open heart surgery, leaving his future up to fate. While the procedure was successful, he constantly felt like he needed to prove something of himself as he made frequent trips to get tests done on his heart until he was 17. His anxiety still affects him today, before shows, daily interactions with his family and team, and even while at home. His anxiety attacks have also occurred in very public moments, most notably during his Dreamville Fest set in and halftime performance during the Hornets vs. Rockets game March 2020. After a particularly bad attack last year, he started taking medication as well as attending meditation and breathing sessions at a dojo to help cope with his anxiety.  The episode ends with an explanation for the Gold Mouf Chronicles—an honest, fun look behind the usually reserved person known as Lute—and some daily affirmations we can all live by each day.

The series features Lute’s latest single “GED (Gettin Every Dolla)” as its opening theme. The single, which debuted in early 2020 following a cryptic social media campaign, has become a fan favorite. The Neal Farmer-directed video, has now amassed over 1.6 MM views on YouTube. Following its release, Lute stunned fans with a halftime performance during the Hornets vs. Rockets showdown at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2019, the Charlotte rapper teamed up with label head J. Cole, and hip hop phenom DaBaby for the track, “Under the Sun,” which was featured on the Grammy-nominated RIAA certified Platinum Dreamville album Revenge of the Dreamers III. Rilès × “GOA”

French Algerian rapper Rilès expands into new territories with the release of his first 2020 single “GOA” (pronounced GWA) paired with a lyric video via Republic Records. Stream “GOA” HERE.

Recorded at the legendary Paramount Recording Studio in Hollywood, on this song, Rilès slides into the pocket of a skittering beat, neon keys, and off-kilter bass lines. Auto-tuned falsetto echoes as he rips through catchy bars in English and French with a verbal flex by inventing his own phrase, “I got GOA.” The statement is a self-confident stance of empowerment and is an evolution from some of the darker themes explored in past music. In the lyric video directed by Rilès, he pulls up on his homies in a remote location as everyone stunts with their Tik-Tok ready dance moves dripping with animations and “GOA.”

About the inspiration for the song, Rilès said, “I was making music for fun to share a vibe other than something really lyrical or too romanticized or something that’s too poetic. I just wanted to go with the vibe and the flow. It was really no problems and no pressure while creating.”

Last year Rilès became a recognized force in French music with the release of his 2019 full- length debut, WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, which put up huge numbers with the hit songs “MARIJUANA” (55M global streams) and “THANK GOD” (41M global streams). Before then Rilès caught the world’s attention in 2016 when he decided to pen, produce, perform, record, mix, master, and engineer one song per week for a year straight—all done in his childhood bedroom. These 52 tracks populated his YouTube channel as he completed this run in September 2017, tallying 300 million-plus views and 300 million streams.

About Rilès

We catalyze our own evolution… By taking the reins of destiny, we push ourselves to progress. After hundreds of millions of streams and views broadcast from a homemade bedroom studio in France, Rilès levels himself up as a rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer in 2020. The French-Algerian creator transforms his genre-busting hybrid of rap, alternative, and pop by opening up the creative process.

Now, he reaches a higher plane altogether with the release of his first 2020 single “GOA” (pronounced GWA) via Republic Records. On the song he slides into the pocket of a skittering beat, neon keys, and off-kilter bass lines. Auto-tuned falsetto echoes as he rips through clever and catchy bars with a verbal flex by inventing his own phrase, “I got GOA.”

This is an evolution from his 2019 full-length debut, WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE. The project put up serious numbers bolstered by “THANK GOD” [41 million global streams] and “MARIJUANA” [55 million global streams], to name a few.

Before then Rilès caught the world’s attention in 2016 when he decided to pen, produce, perform, record, mix, master, and engineer one song per week for a year straight—all done in his childhood bedroom. These 52 tracks populated his YouTube channel as he completed this run in September 2017,tallying 300 million-plus views and 300 million streams. Since then he has sold out tours and inked a deal with Republic Records to represent him in the states. This evolution is still being written as Rilès continues his global domination into the US.

About Republic Records
