AREA15 Announces Art Island

AREA15, the immersive art and entertainment complex opening this September, introduces Art Island, a first-ever permanent gallery for the exhibition of large-scale, commercially available, festival-style artwork. Featuring original pieces by international art stars such as Michael Benisty, Davis McCarty, and Ivan McLean. Art Island will be free to visit when AREA15 opens to the public.

For urban planners, corporate art buyers and private collectors, Art Island will function as not only a physical showroom, but also a curatorial resource, where prospective clients from anywhere in the world can connect with talented artists. Buyers can purchase work on display at Art Island or commission an original work from one of the represented artists.

“With many popular desert festivals being postponed this summer, the public will soon have a brand-new, ongoing opportunity to engage with the theatrical, interactive artwork synonymous with these events,” said Winston Fisher, chief executive officer, AREA15. “At Art Island, we intentionally created a permanent showcase for these extraordinary pieces. After all, what seems a more fitting, organic home for this sort of spectacle than AREA15—in the shadow of the over-the-top Las Vegas Strip?”

Michael Beneville, chief creative officer, AREA15, and founder and CEO, Beneville Studios, curated Art Island in collaboration with Josh Levine, founder, Fired Up Management. All artwork on view is three-dimensional, monumental in scale and may be viewed as sculpture-in-the-round by visitors, who will discover countless photo opportunities as they explore the individual creations.

“Art Island acknowledges the growing audience for this burgeoning, outdoor art form distinctive for its accessibility and ability to create new art enthusiasts,” said Beneville. “Here, for the first time in an urban setting, will be a place where collectors and lovers of visual culture alike can walk among this monumental artwork in a setting unlike anywhere else.”

Artwork at Art Island includes:

“In Every Lifetime I Will Find You” by Michael Benisty

Through 14 vertical feet of mirrored polished steel, Michael Benisty explores the love between people and across humankind. The couple in this piece stand together, radiating strength and connection, through everything the world – and the weather – throws their way. Their mirrored surface invites you to see the strength of your own love within them, infinitely reflected from your soul to theirs and into the heavens.

About the artist: Belgian artist Michael Benisty debuted an eight-foot, mirror-polished skull entitled “Die to Live” at Art Basel in Miami in 2012 and has since followed up with pieces that turned a literal mirror on the crowds at Art Basel, Burning Man, and other art festivals.

“Infinity Ship” (No. 1) “Perception” by Matt Elson

Step inside Infinity Ship (No. 1) “Perception” to alter your perception of reality and change the way you see the world. A shipping container reimagined as a kaleidoscopic glimpse into the infinite, this is more than just a killer photo opp. Conceived as a series of mirror-worlds that can traverse the globe by road, rail, and sea, the Infinity Ships will sometimes come together to create full villages of art and reflection, and other times will be mere ships passing in the night.

About the artist: Matt Elson’s Infinity Box project creates highly imaginative worlds where viewers become the center of a psychedelic kaleidoscope. His work has been displayed across the United States and Europe and featured everywhere from Google headquarters to the Science Museum of London.

“Mechan 9” by Tyler Fuqua Creations (TFC)

A massive robot half-buried in the desert floor, Mechan 9 is a relic from another era—but is it the past or the future? Close examination of its surface reveals secret hatches and mysterious text, heretofore unknown to any scholar. Are they pure decoration, or clues into its mysterious origins? Find the special sticker within AREA15 to decode the text and unlock one of the great secrets of the ages.

About the artist: TFC is a Portland, Oregon-based collective spearheaded by Tyler Fuqua, who began his artistic career by making giant puppets out of things lying around his house. Alongside fellow builder Jason Hutchinson, he has created interactive pieces including a 21-foot whale puppet, a flaming kinetic phoenix, and a tricycle-powered space worm.

“OMAH” by Alchemy Arts

OMAH is a wise owl poised to soar above the crowds at AREA15, omniscient in its wisdom and elegant in its pattern of flight. A neon-lit installation on an impressive scale, it serves as an ambassador between the avian and human worlds and reminds us all to connect with our inner bird of prey.

About the artist: Based in Portland, Oregon, Alchemy Arts has provided design and fabrication services for corporate clients such as Google and Home Depot, and art and music festivals. OMAH is a collaboration between Alchemy artists Fez and Heather B. Gaetz.

“Pulse Portal” by Davis McCarty

Pulse Portal is a 20-foot archway of iridescent light that changes depending on your perspective. The fully modular piece can be put together in twenty different ways and is made from dichroic filters which transform depending on how the light hits them and their position in space.

About the artist: Davis McCarty’s functionally integrated architectural sculptures have been installed and exhibited at museums, iconic buildings, and art festivals around the globe including: The Wright Museum of Art, Sears Tower, Union Station, Zhou B Art Center, Burning Man, and Symbiosis. His work is held in the Illinois State Museum public collection.

“El Scorcho” by Ivan McLean

El Scorcho is a 15-foot tall, fire-breathing dragon said to have emerged from the fires of Mordor in an era sometime between Middle Earth and the distant future. Made from fireproof stainless steel and structural tubing, it is equipped with the latest propane technology and always ready to blast its enemies with scorching balls of molten flame.

“Giant Disco” by Ivan McLean

Giant Disco is a playful take on the classic party archetype. Gather beneath the huge, suspended sphere and watch light and shadow play across its surface or use it as a gathering point for dance parties—both real and imagined.

About the artist: Ivan McLean has lived everywhere from a foggy ranch in Point Reyes, California to the misty mountains of North Carolina. He has spent his career building gates, fences, furniture and sculpture—which, to his surprise, many people have bought and loved.

“Long Live Las Vegas” by Tomas Toulec

Taking inspiration from the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, “Long Live Las Vegas” will greet visitors upon their arrival at AREA15. Las Vegas-based metalwork artist Tomas Toulec handcrafted the sign and incorporated AREA15’s signature portal and other elements found throughout the immersive entertainment complex.

QUINN XCII – SECOND TIME AROUND

Quinn XCII has shared a beautiful new song from his forthcoming album, A Letter To My Younger Self. The raw and tender piano ballad, “Second Time Around,” is one of Quinn XCII’s most revealing songs to date and one he feels is “the most powerful song I’ve ever made.” It’s an honest reflection on past mistakes and a harmony-laced meditation on self-forgiveness. The official video was directed by Blythe Thomas, filmed with a remote team during quarantine in Los Angeles, and brings the vulnerable energy of the song to life with a dark performance of the song from Quinn XCII.

“The idea behind ‘Second Time Around’ is that we always have the chance to start over,” he says. “It’s a song about self-love and it’s very much grounded in my faith, which is something I want to keep exploring in my music going forward.”

“Second Time Around” follows the release of Quinn XCII’s previously-released album tracks “A Letter To My Younger Self” ft. Logic, “Coffee” featuring Marc E. Bassy, “Two 10s” and “Stacy.” A Letter To My Younger Self will release on July 10 via Columbia Records and is available for pre-order now.

Justice For 2015 LAPD Shooting

Los Angeles finally agrees to settle excessive force claim for the 2015 LAPD shooting of unarmed teenagers

On February 10, 2015, Jamar Nicholson and friends were rapping in an alley on the way to school when LAPD opened fire. The City of Los Angeles agreed to settle a lawsuit for excessive force against the Los Angeles Police Department for $985, 000 for the wrongful shooting a black high school student in the back while he was on the way to school. Jamar Nicholson, Jason Huerta and their schoolmates were rapping in an alley a block from school when an LAPD officer, Miguel Guitterez, recklessly assumed there was a robbery in progress. The officer shot at the four students, striking Nicholson in the back and nearly hitting Jason Huerta. According to the Los Angeles Times, the officers did not identify themselves as police offers.

Despite having been shot for no reason, Nicholson remained handcuffed when transported by ambulance to the hospital and while in the emergency room. Both of the minors remained handcuffed and in custody for approximately five hours even though the police immediately learned at the scene that they had shot into a group of innocent minority children on their way to school.

“The officer falsely claimed a crime was being committed by Blacks and a Latino as they filmed themselves rapping with a bright orange-tipped replica gun as a prop,” stated John Harris of Harris & Associates who represented the plaintiffs. “This shooting wouldn’t have occurred if the kids were white, or on the way to school in a Westside neighborhood. This was a classic example of the mistreatment, racial prejudice and injustice against blacks, including black children. They regularly and routinely suffer at the hands of police. After waging a long and rigorous five-year battle against the City of LA for Guitterez’s blatant and egregious misconduct, we finally convinced them to do the right thing and compensate our clients for their physical injuries and emotional distress suffered.”

As we mourn the lives of wrongfully attacked Black people in our country, it is uplifting to see justice in this 5-year-old case.

The King David Hotel Reopens

The King David, the Dan Hotels flagship hotel, will re-open its doors on July 2nd, 2020, 90 years after its original unveiling in 1930. Known worldwide as Israel’s “official” residence for visiting presidents, world leaders, royalty, heads of state, celebrities and sophisticated travelers, the King David has long been considered Israel’s most prestigious hotel.

The reopening will coincide with the appointment of its new General Manager, Tamir Kobrin, succeeding Haim Shkedi who oversaw Israel’s most iconic hotel for a quarter century. Tamir Kobrin has over 20 years of experience in luxury hotels worldwide and comes back to Israel after managing the Anantara Hotel in Portugal, the Leila Palace in Udaipur, and Leila Palace in New Delhi. Early in his career, Kobrin was Reception Manager at the King David, so his appointment brings him back to his hotelier roots.

In the wake of Covid-19, the Dan chain has initiated a health charter “Stay Safe & Enjoy,” detailing a mass of requirements to maintain social distancing, hygiene and to safeguard all guests and staff while upholding the high level of service and cuisine associated with Dan Hotels. Prior to re-opening, each Dan Hotels property is undergoing “deep cleaning” of all public, service, kitchen areas and guestrooms, utilizing state-of-the-art disinfectants.

On arrival at the King David or at any Dan Hotel, guests’ temperatures will be remotely checked and if over 37.8 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), the guest will be transferred to a private testing area. If a second reading remains high, the visitor may not enter the hotel and medical care will be sought. A sealed package will be provided to every guest containing masks and disinfecting materials. Sanitizing gel dispensers with touchless sensors will be positioned at the hotel entrance and throughout public areas.

The hotel pool and gym will operate according to the guidelines of Israel’s Ministry of Health. Furniture has been rearranged and floor markings installed to maintain social distancing. The King David’s legendary buffet breakfast has been reformatted so that it is protected by glass. Certain items will be offered in individual covered containers, and masked and gloved waiters will fill guests’ plates.

The King David will continue to provide full room service under the strictest sanitary conditions. After reopening, the King David will offer special weekends that include a sunset cocktail reception on the hotel’s newly configured rooftop with its mesmerizing 360-degree view of the entire city of Jerusalem, along with a talk on “The Story of Jerusalem from the Beginning to the New Age.”

Special tours are also being offered to hotel guests during the weekends:

  • Tour of the Old City and the Yemin Moshe neighborhood – a journey to the heart of Jerusalem, visiting the Armenian Quarter, Mount Zion’s David’s Tomb, the Room of the Last Supper, the Church of the Dormition and finally a visit to the Western Wall.
  • A tour of the ancient walls and the western side of the city beginning in the quaint Nahalat Shiva neighborhood, from there to the National Institutions, the Bezalel School of Arts, the Nahalot neighborhood and ending at Mahane Yehuda market.

In addition to the reopening of the King David, the Dan Accadia Herzliya will reopen on June 25, and the Dan Carmel in Haifa on July 7. These hotels will join the Dan Eilat and Dan Caesarea Resort which reopened at the end of May, the Dan Panorama Eilat and the Ruth Safed Hotel (opening this week), and the Dan Tel Aviv Hotel which remained safely open and operational throughout the pandemic.

The Dan Hotels chain was founded in 1948 and has grown up alongside the State of Israel, earning its place as the longest established luxury hotel chain in the country, with a reputation for excellence in accommodation, service, and cuisine. The King David is a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World.

360 Magazine, Surfaces "Learn to Fly"

Surfaces × Learn to Fly

Texas-based duo Surfaces have released an accompanying music video for their collaborative single “Learn To Fly” with legendary multi-GRAMMY Award winning Elton John, out now via 10K Projects

Released on June 12, “Learn To Fly” accumulated over 6.4 million global combined streams within its first week. A lighthearted animated short, directed by Ivan Dixon (Childish Gambino’s “Feels Like Summer”) and produced by Sean Zwan from Studio Showoff, the “Learn to Fly” music video exhibits the same whimsical spirit of the single, depicting the musicians as singing pilots flying through the sky.

Surfaces on the music video: “We were incredibly excited to work with Studio Showoff again, to bring to life the message of “Learn To Fly”. The video really hits home and paints the universe we’ve been trying to create with every step of our journey as musicians.”

“Having heard ‘Sunday Best’ for the first time in Australia and liking it so much, I was surprised when the guys reached out to me to sing and play a little piano on ‘Learn To Fly,’” says Elton John. “I loved the song and the production on the track they sent me. We recorded via Zoom in LA and it was so much fun working on a non-Elton record. These guys are terrific, and we had a blast collaborating.”

Surfaces released their third studio album, Horizons, earlier this year on February 28. Peaking at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, the success of “Sunday Best”, which now has over 1.1 billion streams, skyrocketed the duo to the #1 spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artists Chart. Currently, “Sunday Best” is #6 on Apple Music’s Today’s Hits Playlist, #24 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 and featured on the platform’s Today’s Top Hits playlist, #7 on Amazon’s Pop Chart and #5 on Pandora’s Trendsetters Chart. In addition, “Sunday Best” is currently being used as part of the Beats by Dre campaign featuring LeBron James, Serena Williams and more.

Cannabis illustration by Rita Azar for use by 360 magazine

Sunnyside × Illinois Cannabis Union

Today, workers at the Sunnyside dispensary in Chicago won their election, by an overwhelming majority, and will join Illinois’s Cannabis Union, Local 881 UFCW. The dispensary, owned by Cresco Labs, employs 40 people and is located in the Lakeview neighborhood.

The workers faced an unusually long wait to receive the results of their election, originally petitioned for on April 3, 2020. The National Labor Relations Boards originally ordered that the election would be held by mail-in ballot instead of in-person voting. However, the pandemic caused the vote count to be postponed multiple times.

“The entire process has tested everyone’s resolve, but we came through in the end,” said Nicholas Stankus, a Sunnyside employee. “This group is proud to be the first cannabis dispensary workers to unionize with Local 881 UFCW and participate in the growth of Illinois’s cannabis industry.”

The workers at Sunnyside are the first dispensary workers in Illinois to win a Union election. They were motivated to Unionize in order to improve their working conditions. Workers cited issues such as a lack of professionalism from management, unclear workplace policies and procedures, a slow and inadequate response to the challenges of the coronavirus, and a growing culture of disrespect for workers.

“The workers at Sunnyside are a great example of what happens when workers stand together and fight for what they want,” said Local 881 UFCW President Steve Powell, “This was a long wait, but better careers are worth fighting for. Our Union is proud of these workers and looks forward to negotiating a contract that will be worth the wait!”

Local 881 is among the largest affiliates of the UFCW, which is proud to represent tens of thousands of cannabis workers across multiple states. UFCW members in the legal cannabis industry work in growing and cultivating facilities, manufacturing and processing facilities, and also in laboratories and dispensaries. Local 881 made history in January 2020, when over 100 workers at the Cresco Labs grow facility in Joliet, IL voted to join Local 881. Sunnyside is the national retail brand of Cresco Labs. Cresco operates seven Sunnyside locations throughout Illinois.

Local 881 UFCW represents 34,000 members employed in retail food and drug stores throughout Illinois and Northwest Indiana, cannabis workers in Illinois, as well as a professional division comprised of health and nursing home workers, barbers and cosmetologists, and workers in other retail and service industries. Among the companies under contract with Local 881 are Jewel Food Stores, Osco Drug, Mariano’s, CVS Pharmacy, Kroger, Schnucks, Conagra Brands, and many smaller chains and independent stores, as well as nursing homes and other business establishments. Local 881 is among the largest affiliates of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which represents 1.3 million members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
