Virtual Teens Take the MET

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host the first Virtual Teens Take The Met! which will be held online on Friday May 29, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Teens will have the opportunity to digitally immerse themselves in hands-on experiences created by over 30 New York City cultural and community organizations and institutions, who have partnered with The Met for this day-long online festival. This event is free with registration encouraged, and will be accessible through several platforms including YouTube, Zoom, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok.

“Teens Take The Met!” has been held at the Museum bi-annually since 2014 and over the years has brought together over 30,000 young people for what has become one of the most dynamic events in New York City for teens. This spring, while the Museum is temporarily closed, the online event will offer a variety of activities, such as art-making, writing and poetry prompts, dance and movement workshops, as well as opportunities for teens to practice self-care and communication about COVID-19 while in isolation.

Led by The Met (@MetTeens) along with partner institutions, there will be new programming and activities every half-hour throughout the day, culminating with a Zoom party with DJ’s from Building Beats. Highlights include an art tour and talk with New York City Writing Project; a step tutorial with the Panthers Step Team from Bard High School Early College; collage and printmaking with El Museo del Barrio; ‘NamaShakespeare’ yoga with Titan Theatre Company; digital zine-making and an exploration of the impact of COVID-19 on incarcerated youth with Art and Resistance Through Education (ARTE); Poetry writing with Urban Word NYC; a fashion party with The Studio Museum in Harlem; and The Met will have a variety of art-making activities including flower crowns and tote bag DIY, ‘Teens Meme The Met’ activity and the Museum’s popular “Balcony Bar at Home,” with the quartet ETHEL, will feature teen musicians. A full schedule is below.

Teens can register

Virtual Teens Take The Met! complements the Museum’s existing selection of online materials, live and interactive programming, performances, and conversations with curators, educators, and artists, as well as #MetAnywhere social media initiatives. The Museum’s Art at Home hub is a resource for MetPublications, Primers, videos, 360-degree gallery tours, and educational materials, and the Virtual Events page is updated regularly. New highlights include a digital exhibition tour of Sahel: Art and Empires on the Shores of the Sahara and the launch of an innovative AR audio experience with the zemí cohoba stand.

Bino Rideaux Releases New Mixtape

Bino Rideaux has proven to be a staple West Coast artist over the years”

“L.A. rapper Bino Rideaux has been putting in the work in the area for a while now, earning co-signs from a lot of biggies including the late Nipsey Hussle”

“Bino, as well as Nip, let their bars do the talking.”

South Central L.A. rapper Bino Rideaux is on his way to becoming West Coast hip-hop’s next essential voice, as he releases “Outside,” his newest mixtape available today via Def Jam Recordings. Bino’s debut Def Jam mixtape builds on the momentum of his first pair of Def Jam single + video releases, “Brand New” featuring Blxst (immortalized in episode two of Bino’s YouTube series, Out The Blue), and “Bet.”

27-year old Bino Rideaux (born Brandon Rainey) is a case study in the hustle, grinding on his own and acquiring cosigns from some of the biggest names on his coast. Influenced by the lure of the streets and emotive artists like Young Thug and Nas, Bino first received local attention in 2015, with Life Is Like A Movie, recorded in a makeshift studio at his grandmother’s house. He signed to Out The Blue Records, and broke through with “100 Days 100 Nights.” As Bino explained, “I lost a homie, KP. We made that track because a lot was going in the
city. It was basically my hood versus the enemy’s hood.”

The track resonated with one fan in particular– Nipsey Hussle. He and Bino linked in the studio for “The Field” (2016) and “Clarity” (2017), and “we kept rocking ever since.”  The relationship indelibly changed Bino. “That’s one of the most major parts that made me ‘me’ today. I feel a lot different than I was prior to meeting bro.”  HipHopDX chronicled their fateful meeting in the unforgettable “Bino Rideaux Recalls The Night He Met Nipsey Hussle Via Casey Veggies.”

With the blueprint of Nipsey’s business acumen and artistic inspiration in hand, Bino’s path was set.  He signed with Def Jam in January 2020, and “Pride 2 The Side,” his tribute to Nipsey, dropped in April. The track, LA Weekly wrote, “sees Rideaux genuinely struggling to make sense of Hussle’s death, lines like ‘now he’s lying with a hole in him’ recited with a sense of anguish. It’s particularly poignant, coming at a time when many of us are struggling with the concept of our own mortality.”  Meanwhile, “Brand New” and “Bet” followed within weeks, and “Outside” was put on the Def Jam scheduled to arrive on May 22nd.

Bino, for his part, is promoting his latest projects during the shutdown with a series of safe activations in Los Angeles, for example an interview with Travis Mills at Apple/Beats 1, which has been particularly supportive of Bino’s music. “Real pain, real emotion, and most importantly real stories in this record,” he told Complex. “It’s been a whole year since we lost our brother,” he wrote in the description for the song on SoundCloud. “Shit will never be the same #LLNH FOREVER!”

DeathbyRomy Drops Video for “Kiss Me Goodbye”

Adding a dynamic darkness to alt-pop, buzzing Los Angeles singer and songwriter DeathbyRomy releases her brand new single “Kiss Me Goodbye” today.

Speaking of the single, DeathbyRomy said “’Kiss Me Goodbye’ was inspired by a few of my close friends’ stories about their experiences with being the ‘other girl’—a place I’m sure many of us have been in. I chose to try and take the stronger, self-assured take at telling this story by reclaiming a sense of strength and power in saying goodbye. Rather than a ‘poor me’ situation, I thought it should be a triumphant anthem for not being willing to be second best.”

On the track, glitchy beats and cinematic strings underscore confessions that feel ripped right out of a handwritten diary as she admits, “And I don’t believe you, but I wanted to.” Blurring the lines between gothic overtones, hip-hop production, and rock attitude, it culminates on the soaring send-off, “Tonight when you leave me to kiss her, will you promise to kiss me goodbye?”

Meanwhile, she filmed the haunting and hypnotic music video during quarantine. The clip begins akin to an old horror flick with ornate lettering and title cards. Its grainy footage switches like a blade between cracked mirrors, spray-paint, and vignettes of DeathbyRomy with wax tears on her face canvasing a lost Los Angeles landscape.

“Kiss Me Goodbye” arrives on the heels of her 2019 EP Love u – to Death. The EP’s single, “Problems,” tallied over 38 million global streams and incited unanimous tastemaker applause. Alt Press claimed DeathbyRomy is “well on her way to alt-pop domination,” while tmrw Magazine wrote, “there is no doubt she is made for big things.” LADYGUNN described her as “one of a kind,” saying that “when it comes to musical and style aesthetics there is no one in the game quite like her.”

Watch the music video HERE.

ABOUT DEATHBYROMY:

Singer, songwriter, and dark-pop provocateur DeathbyRomy pays attention to every last detail. She pours both pain and euphoria into her catchy but heavy music, pitting electronic melodies and propulsive beats against hypnotic vocals and deeply personal lyrics. Now 20 years old, the Los Angeles-born Romy Flores wrote her first song at age 5 and began releasing her music at 15, mining inspiration from the iconoclastic artists she was raised on (The Beatles, Björk, Kanye West, to name a few). With her 2018 debut album Monsters, she soon drew an ardent following and found countless fans turning up to her shows adorned in her signature eye makeup. Her Capitol Records debut, 2019’s Love u — to Death EP, was short but sickly sweet, emphasizing her unique interweaving of rap boldness, electronic innovation, and raw rock ‘n’ roll passion. As Romy’s sound has taken shape, so has her DeathbyRomy persona: the Harajuku punk fashion, the corpsepaint-like makeup, and her hard-earned, utterly badass confidence. The lush new single “Kiss Me Goodbye” finds Romy cleverly bidding farewell to an unfaithful lover over future-forward production, refusing to be second-best to a pesky ex while dramatic drops punctuate her decision to choose herself. Stay tuned for more new music coming soon.

Relief Funds for Nursing Facilities

The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), representing more than 14,000 nursing homes and long term care facilities across the country that provide care to approximately five million people each year, released the following statement after HHS announced $4.9 billion in funding to help skilled nursing facilities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The following statement is attributable to Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL.

“We appreciate HHS sending this much-needed funding to skilled nursing facilities. Long term care providers are privileged to care for our country’s Greatest Generation. The Administration has given us the ability to care of them with the resources that they deserve.

We are working around the clock to protect the people who are most vulnerable to COVID-19. That work makes this funding more important than ever. These resources are an important step toward ensuring residents in long term care facilities receive the vital support needed during this unprecedented public health crisis.

Given the gravity of the situation we are facing with this deadly virus and its impact on our vulnerable residents, long term care facilities require additional support and funding from state and federal governments to reduce its spread. Notably, assisted living communities have yet to receive any direct aid, despite also serving vulnerable seniors. While building on support received from HHS, we are asking for additional consideration for all long term care facilities, whether it be in regard to additional testing, personal protective equipment, or funding.

Long term care facilities appreciate the Administration’s support in prioritizing long term care residents. We need everyone around the country to rally around nursing homes and assisted living communities the same way they have around hospitals. We will continue to work with local, state and federal health officials to take every possible step to keep our nation’s long term care residents and staff safe.”

The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) represents more than 14,000 non-profit and proprietary skilled nursing centers, assisted living communities, sub-acute centers and homes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By delivering solutions for quality care, AHCA/NCAL aims to improve the lives of the millions of frail, elderly and individuals with disabilities who receive long term or post-acute care in our member facilities each day.

New Minister of Tourism for Israel

On Tuesday, May 19, the Israel Ministry of Tourism held a Ministerial exchange ceremony between the outgoing Minister, Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin, and incoming Tourism Minister MK Asaf Zamir. Prior to his new position, Zamir was Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo from 2013 – 2018, the youngest Mayor to ever to hold this position. As Tourism Minister, Zamir is tasked with revitalizing both domestic and international tourism as countries across the world try to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have quite a few tasks ahead of us to help rebuild the tourism industry in Israel,” said incoming Tourism Minister, Asaf Zamir. “We want to open all the industries that support tourism including hotels, tourist attractions, restaurants, cafes and bars as quickly and safely as possible. Tourism is essential for the reconstruction and ignition of the Israeli economy, and we look forward to welcoming travelers from around to world to experience all we have to offer, from Eilat to the North, Nazareth to Tel Aviv-Jaffa, to Jerusalem and the Dead Sea.”

“While it is extremely difficult to leave my post at the Ministry of Tourism, I am very excited for what’s to come under Asaf’s leadership,” said former Minister of Tourism, Yariv Levin. “Together we have made unprecedented breakthroughs through unimaginable investments, establishment of new hotels, development of the digital field, and of course, accomplishments in marketing that have helped make Israel a top destination for travelers from around the world.”

In addition to his appointment, Zamir asked that Amir Halevi remain as Director General for the Israel Ministry of Tourism at this time.

“The first challenge that we face is to bring back tourism traffic to Israel – in domestic tourism and certainly in international tourism,” said Director General Amir Halevi. “As we face challenges and decisions regarding the tourism industry workers, who are so important to us, we will work diligently to get each of them and their businesses back on track as quickly as possible. As we begin to face the challenge of reopening to domestic tourism, we are continuing to think ahead on how we can adapt to bringing in international tourists as soon as possible with the greatest attention to everyone’s health and safety.”

As the country begins to ease restrictions, Israel has seen significant movements for residents and domestic travelers with the reopening of small Bed & Breakfast hotels, the reopening of Tel Aviv beaches, and the plans to reopen restaurants, bars and cafés on May 27. In addition, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority has reopened over 20 parks across the country with new health and safety restrictions.

Due to COVID-19, the ceremony was attended by a small audience, and was broadcasted live on YouTube via GPO. The following is a link to the ceremony:
