KYGO × ZAK ABEL

Global superstar, producer and DJ, Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll – a.k.a Kygo, releases new track and video “Freedom” ft. Zak Abel today. Click HERE to listen and HERE to watch.

“Freedom” follows the release of “I’ll Wait” with Sasha Sloan, “Like It Is” with Tyga and Zara Larsson and “Higher Love” with Whitney Houston, all of which will be featured on Kygo’s upcoming third album Golden Hour via Sony Music International/Ultra Records/RCA Records.

“Higher Love” has more than 651 million audio and video streams combined and charted at Top 40 radio. It is a cover of the 1986 Steve Winwood classic. The Whitney Houston estate presented Kygo with the archival recording of Whitney’s version, which was previously released as a Japan-only bonus track on her I’m Your Baby Tonight physical album in 1990. Upon hearing the Whitney track, Kygo raced into the studio, thrilled to be given the opportunity to make music with one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. “Higher Love” was written by Steve Winwood, Will Jennings and produced by Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll and Narada Michael Walden.

iann dior – Sick And Tired

iann dior has released a new song and video “Sick And Tired” featuring Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker, out now on 10K Projects. Produced by Omer Fedi (24kGoldn, Ella Mai, Trevor Daniel) and Travis Barker, “Sick And Tired” will feature on iann dior’s upcoming EP, I’m Gone, out this May. Produced by Noan Riddle and Infinity Studios, and debuted this morning by Complex, check out the Mooch directed video for “Sick And Tired” HERE.

“Sick And Tired” arrives on the heels of iann’s headlining nationwide ‘Industry Plant Tour’, which kicked off January 15 in Santa Ana, and wrapped up on February 20 with a sold-out show at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. iann released his debut album Industry Plant, in November 2019 – the project has since garnered over 190 million Spotify streams and over 60 million SoundCloud plays. The album includes the infectious hit singles “gone girl” featuring Trippie Redd, “Strings” featuring Gunna, and “Darkside” featuring Travis Barker.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Corpus Christi, iann found instant success with the first song he ever wrote. “I was in high school and my friends told me to make a song because they knew I was good at writing,” he remembers. Despite his lack of experience, the track earned 10,000 plays in a week, all through word-of-mouth. iann then began putting out a song a week, drawing more and more listeners, and eventually catching the ear of Internet Money founder Taz Taylor.

After arriving in L.A., iann started working with producer Nick Mira, and they went on to release “Cutthroat” together in February 2019. Within a month of its release, “Cutthroat” had amassed over 13 million streams on SoundCloud, and iann began to gain a major buzz for his moody and melodic brand of lo-fi hip-hop. iann’s rapid rise on SoundCloud brought him to the attention of 10K Projects who immediately signed him and released his debut mixtape nothing’s ever good enough in April2019. The mixtape features the single “Emotions”— a heavy-hearted but deeply infectious track that racked up three million plays in just a month. A year later and the track has over 98 million plays on Spotify and continues to grow.

In discussing his process, iann reveals that the dreamy and fluid feel of his music has much to do with his purely instinctive creative approach. “Anytime I hear a beat that I love, it’ll bring out the story I want to tell,” he says. “I’ll start humming the melody and the words will follow that—it’s all just whatever comes out of my head right in the moment.” At the same time, iann’s lyrics mine inspiration from the reflective, narrative-based songwriting of artists like J. Cole. “The whole reason I started making music was J. Cole,” iann points out. “He showed me that I could use songs to tell my own story, just like he uses his songs to tell his story.”

Combating False COVID-19 Information

Fake news websites could be identified by the partners that provide their video streaming and advertising, research shows.

The new approach could help search engines and social media giants, such as Facebook and Twitter, to flag untrustworthy articles more rapidly and prevent their misleading content going viral.

Fake news stories and conspiracy theories have proliferated online during the coronavirus pandemic, from alleged cures to claims the virus is caused by 5G technology.

Ram Gopal, Professor of Information Systems Management at Warwick Business School, said:

“The US Presidential Elections in 2016 highlighted the significant harm that fake news can do, potentially impacting election outcomes and undermining democratic institutions.

“These concerns have multiplied during the coronavirus pandemic and fake news has resulted in an untold number of deaths from misleading and harmful information.

“It is vital that we use all the tools at our disposal to combat the spread of fake news and the huge damage it does.”

Flagging fake news stories typically involves humans or Artificial Intelligence (AI) scanning individual articles for misleading information.

This is difficult as articles can be quickly changed to defeat the algorithms designed to catch them.

Now researchers at Warwick Business School have found fake news and clickbait websites tend to use the same supply chain partners to provide key components, such as advertising platforms.

While fake news websites can disguise their text and images to appear real, they cannot conceal which partners they use, as these can be easily identified using browsing tools.

Professor Gopal said: “Trying to identify fake news articles is a cat and mouse game, because the content can be quickly changed to defeat the algorithms searching for them.

“To detect fake news effectively we need strong markers that are difficult to hide or fudge.

“A website’s choice of third-party partners exposes the essence of what the website does and how it achieves that. A tiger cannot hide its stripes.”

The researchers compared more than 450 top news websites, as listed by alexa.com, with 50 fake news websites and 50 clickbait sites identified by the Harvard University Library.

They identified 115 significant third parties that were only used by trustworthy sites and seven that were only used by untrustworthy platforms. These markers helped identify untrustworthy websites more rapidly and efficiently, with an accuracy of 94%.

The findings were published in the paper, Real or not? Identifying untrustworthy news websites using third-party partnerships, in the journal ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems.

Professor Gopal said: “It is not a case of these markers replacing traditional content analysis. The two approaches can complement each other.

“Content can be scrutinised more closely, with a lower threshold for action, if it originates from a website that our markers classify as illegitimate.  Integrating the two approaches could result in more accurate and more robust detection mechanisms.”

Chop, Chop, Chop – By Using The Right Kind Of Shears

If you belong to the school of thought that a haircut is just a haircut, and often, make use of household scissors and a bowl to give an unfortunate individual a haircut, then you ought to quit trying to be a hairstylist.

At the very least, get rid of the bowl that you make use of to give a straight-lined boy-cut.

Moreover, using a pair of household scissors with its blunt edges and bulkiness ends up damaging the hair, and creating more split-ends.

Thus, if you do get the thought to look around for a decent pair of scissors, preferably meant for hair cutting, then you might just have a future in the field of hairstyling.

So, if you’re thinking of buying yourself a new pair of shears, here are the questions you ought to ask yourself first.

What is the right length?

Now, if you happen to be a professional barber then you ought to have both the longer shears as well as the shorter ones. The longer pair is for techniques where you don’t hold the hair in your hand. Whereas, the shorter length in shears is generally used for when you do cut the hair, holding it in your hands.

And, if anyone has told you about measuring the blade against the palm of your hand, just ignore that little piece of advice.

Most cosmetologists tend to go with the flow, holding the shears to see if it feels right in their hands.

On the other hand, if you do happen to be a first-timer, then go ahead and buy yourself a shorter blade because you will be holding on to the hair no matter the length.

What scissors best suits my needs?

Yes, it’s all about your needs. You have to understand that shears are now aero-dynamically designed to suit the needs of the hairstylists.

So, if you’re right-handed, then the features are designed such that it will fit perfectly into the hands of a right-handed person.

And, you need not worry if you are left-handed. As there are now shears available in the market to deftly fit into the hands of a lefty.

The uppermost thought you ought to keep in your mind is comfort. Now, three different types of handles are available.

Swivel-handle shear: Most commonly used by professionals. Known to fit the hand and relax pressure on the wrists. It caused quite a rage when it was first introduced.

Drop handle: Similar to the traditional offset shear, the drop handle shear, however, offers an additional ergonomic grip that allows a firm hold and causes less strain on the hand. It is gaining much popularity.

Precision cutting shears: Much smaller and also daintier, these shears are manufactured with low hardness steel and are used for very close cuts.

What kind of blades should I use?

Technically, all hair-dressing shears are of stainless steel. Now, when you talk of the finest shears in the market, there are two that ought to be mentioned.

These are the Japanese shears that are also known as the clamshell or convex edge, that are reputed for giving the smoothest cut.

And, then there is the German shear. German-style shears have non-honed, beveled edges that are serrated to grip the hair. These give a little stiffer cut but are great when working in thick sections, like for dry-cutting.

One thing to remember here is that all scissors, whether “Cobalted steel” or “Titanium scissors” are made of stainless steel. All need to be sharpened because it will get dull or nicked.

Do I need to buy the whole set?

If you are only into standards cuts, then save yourself the cost of buying an entire set of shears.

However, if you do deal in precise haircutting styles such as slide cutting, thinning and style cutting, then it would be outrageous to attempt these styles with a single pair of scissors.

Where to buy these high-quality shears?

There are many shears available in the market, that are simply high-priced but do not have the premium high quality.

If you do not know much about the newbies boasting of manufacturing high-end quality scissors and selling them at exorbitant prices, then steer clear of them.

But you still want a high-quality product, then you ought to stick to the established names in the field. If you are in search of affordable hair shears, Scissor Tech offers a range of hairdressing equipment that meet your needs.

Keep an eye out for ball bearing tension systems and polymer inlays in the pivots that are both common features in high-end quality shears.

What look should I go for?

There’s a very good reason for discussing this aspect of high-quality shears at the very end. Quality and comfort are features that supersede looks.

However, you can’t really take the style out of the stylists, now can you? So, there are several options available to you even if you regard the looks of a thing as relatively important.

There are colored titanium-coated shears. As mentioned earlier, these shears are merely coated with titanium, not made of it. This helps significantly in preventing rust.

Colored titanium shears come in a variety of amazing colors. The drawback, nonetheless, is that these shears tend to fade, scratch, or chip more easily than the classic stainless steel shears.

Next, comes in the colored finger inserts. Primarily, finger inserts are meant to provide more comfort and better fit. And, the finger inserts come in three sizes-small, medium and large.

But, they are now used as a beautifying element of the good old pair of shears. So, you can find finger inserts coming in every imaginable color to pep up the look of the high-quality shears.

Finally, there are colored silencers. Silencers are also known as bumpers or stoppers. They serve as a stop for the scissors and keep them quiet as the shear comes together.

These too are now available in different colors and elevate the look of the shears aesthetically.

Finally, there’s the tension screw. This feature is of notable importance. Scissor tension is the tension of the screw that holds the two scissor blades together.

In most cases, it is a matter of personal preference. The blade should fall slightly and close halfway up the other blade. If the blade doesn’t move at all, your tension is too tight. On the other hand, if the blade falls completely closed, then the tension is too loose.

Now, for the cosmetologists, it isn’t possible to completely overlook the aesthetics of the tools they so commonly use, hence, this feature too comes in different colors to brighten up the look of the shears.

The upkeep of your high-quality shears

If you have managed to make up your mind and find for yourself the perfect pair of shears, please remember that you need to make an effort to keep it in mint condition.

You shouldn’t really have to clean your scissors very often, but if you have managed to get it dirty, make sure to clean it up immediately. Make sure to clean it up thoroughly to avoid rust.

If you’re not looking to replace your high-priced shears due to rust, the best way to get rid of rust is to soak the scissors in warm water with a tiny bit of bleach.

This ought to solve your problem once or twice, but if you’re not taking care to keep your shears clean and rust-free, then you will end up with useless professional hair clippers.

No matter the quality of the shears, if you keep them dirty and wet then you will end up having to replace them fairly soon.

Also, it is a rule of thumb to have your shears sharpened every six months or at least after every 500-700 haircuts, to get a smooth cut every time.

The market for high-quality shears has advanced greatly in the last decade. So, you see an emphasis on every aspect of the very tool used for haircutting.

Shears were only about sharp edges before, but today, it’s about the look, the grip, the shape, the metal, even the finish of the shears itself. Everything is of importance and the buyer is spoiled for choice.

But, these high-end quality shears are exactly as the name suggests, and do in fact deliver enduring comfort for the hairstylists. And, without a doubt elevate the haircutting technique.

Hopefully, you have gained some insight as to the aspects one ought to consider before buying a high-quality, high priced pair of shears.

However, doing a little bit of research never really hurts anyone, so do ask around about the best names in the market dealing with high-quality shears.

And, if you really don’t feel the urge to plod around looking for different brands of shears, let us give you another useful tip. Try out scissortec.com, where you are going to find a whole range of high-end quality products, with varying price tags, features, and colors.

Duke Dumont’s Debut – “Duality’

DUKE DUMONT UNVEILS DEBUT ALBUM DUALITY

THE 10 TRACK RELEASE INCLUDES HIT SINGLES “THERAPY,” “THE POWER” AND “LET ME GO”

BUY/STREAM DUALITY HERE

Multi-platinum hit-maker Duke Dumont has released his highly anticipated debut album DUALITY. Listen HERE.

Channeling his years of experience into a cohesive record that epitomizes his core beliefs, DUALITY is an honest, cathartic expression of Dumont’s desire to embody the mentality of a true artist, liberated from genre specifics and scored with his own sonic fingerprint.

With the LP split into two halves – one dancefloor-oriented and one introspective – it’s heart on sleeve, vocal house record “Therapy” opens proceedings, a track that was released as a single at the start of the year. Next up is club anthem “The Power,” a collaboration with UK singer-songwriter Zak Abel that was also released as a single, and “Obey,” a cut that sees Dumont link up with New Jersey artist Roland Clark. With no fewer than six collaborations across the LP, “The Fear” and “Nightcrawler” then feature US singer, songwriter and pianist Niia and Australian duo Say Lou Lou respectively.

The second half of the record is where Dumont’s more introspective and personal tracks blossom. There is an appearance from Colorado singer-singer songwriter How to Dress Well on “Together,” before latest single “Let Me Go” an emotion-drenched track stitched together with the soaring vocals of Australian artist Ry X, closes things out in the most poignant way possible.

The ten-track release is a long-player in the traditional sense, produced to be listened to in its entirety, rather than a collection of radio-friendly singles. Besides his own production and vocal features, the album incorporates live string arrangements, guitar players, drummers, and piano keys.

A production dynamo responsible for a stunning back catalogue that includes international chart-topping hits, multi-Grammy nominations and bumpin’ Chicago-influenced underground productions, Dumont is a contemporary electronic music powerhouse. He has amassed over 2.5 billion streams across his back-catalogue of previous anthems, scoring platinum-selling UK #1s with timeless records such as “Ocean Drive.”

A career-affirming release, DUALITY is a staggering album and the culmination of all of Duke Dumont’s previous work.

Ashton Travis × Chase B – “CASINO”

ASHTON TRAVIS & CHASE B RELEASE NEW SINGLE “CASINO”

LISTEN HERE

“The song is its own acid trip of pure feeling, melody and memory…equally forlorn and uplifting. It’s a vibe that keeps you undoubtedly on edge, in the best way.”

“Ashton Travis has the buttery vocals that could make just about anything sound appealing.”

“Armed with a sharp, melodic set of deliveries, the liveliness and determination behind this offering act as an unbreakable foundation for Travis’ career.”

ABOUT ASHTON TRAVIS:
Ashton Travis is from the best city in the world. He knows he’s biased, but the charming poet-turned-singer from Houston, TX is more than sentimental about his hometown—he has the facts to make his case. “Houston has a strong style and culture, from music, to food, style, the cars we drive, and some of the most beautiful black people in the world; We’re champions in sports, and we put out legendary music acts from DJ Screw to Beyonce to Ashton Travis,” he boasts. To Ashton, being from Houston means having an ear for “slow, loud and banging” beats oozing from the stereos of unhurried cars on gravel roads—vehicles affectionately known as slabs. In that regard, Ashton’s sound is uniquely Houston. You feel it just as much as you hear it, his catchy, soulful melodies over atmospheric production firmly rooting him within a legacy of music talent from the city.

Born to parents from Guyana and Antigua, Ashton was a curious kid with a wandering mind. His father brought him to barbershops where he would see the old school Cadillacs and hear the bass-heavy chopped and screwed hip-hop so quintessential to Houston. Growing up in their Seventh-day Adventist household, Ashton went to church every weekend and followed the Sabbath. With friends, he played basketball, rode bikes along the bayous, and made pseudo professional mixtapes that they would burn to CDs and pass around. A poet at heart, Ashton was a member of the city’s National Poetry Slam team and grew up writing stanzas before turning his focus to lyrics. After watching his cousin make beats on Fruity Loops, he was encouraged to write raps.

For Ashton, his curiosity was rooted in a desire to see the world. Ashton went to Howard University, making a name for himself on campus before dropping out to pursue music full-time. His wanderlust took him to Los Angeles and New York City, but forging a path as an artist wasn’t without its challenges. Fast forward to today, and Ashton is more confident than ever in his gift. A self-described overthinker, Ashton’s songs explore the complexities of relationships and the depths of his mind, from dreams to aspirations, fears and insecurities. “I want people to empathize because I feel like I’m empathizing through my music—I’m talking not just for myself,” he says.

Ashton’s debut EP Almost There is born from the perspective of someone seeing life with new eyes. “Since that day, it’s like I’ve been reborn or something,” he says about a recent encounter with death that shed new light on his life. Single “Death Row”, an excavation and release of inner demons left unaddressed, speaks most clearly to Ashton’s newfound outlook. “I’ve overthought a lot of things and I’ve held myself back from different opportunities because I’ve been living in my mind, worried, focusing on what could be,” he confesses. “With the music I have now, it just feels like a collection of songs that scream I’m here, I’m alive, I’m happy to be alive, and I’ma talk about shit that moves my spirit, hoping that it moves the next person’s spirit that listens to it because we ain’t got all day. We could be dead tomorrow.”

Tracking COVID-19 Via Social Media

Apple and Google announced plans to work together to provide tools that will help track the spread of coronavirus using apps that allow digital contact tracing and notification via Bluetooth. Social media reacted with tens of thousands of mentions of the collaboration within the first hour, according to international social media analytics firm Talkwalker.

In just one hour after the announcement, there were 34k mentions of the collaboration, Talkwalker reported. This excitement was best explained by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who stated that he and Apple CEO, Tim Cook are “committed to working together on these efforts.” His tweet received 10k engagements in the first 2 hours of posting and had an 8/10 trending score.

Sentiment analysis shows people reacted positively to the privacy controls that would be built into the apps. Worries about civil liberties were more neutral and there was also a generally positive reaction to what this could mean for the public health as a whole.

Tim Cook’s tweet announcing the collaboration has received 44k engagements. Sundar Pichai’s has received 35k engagements so far.

The companies stressed the privacy controls they would use to exclude sensitive geolocation data. Overall the term “privacy” generated 16k mentions within the conversation.

And Apple and Google weren’t alone among brands doing good.

Among the other companies trending this week are:

NBA H.O.R.S.E tournament by State Farm: Donating $200,000 to COVID-19 relief efforts, State Farm brought back sports, at least a little bit. The tournament generated 20k mentions within a day of being announced, Talkwalker reported.

SNL at home: SNL’s fully at home episode generated 55k mentions. According to Talkwalker, sentiment analysis showed that of those conversations 23% were positive and 24% were negative – right in line with host Tom Hanks’ expectations.

Allstate and American Family are sending refunds to policy holders who are driving less. This is a very small conversation – just 2k mentions in the last 30 days. But the news has generated nearly 500k engagements as lots of people are excited by the possibility, Talkwalker reported. Here’s one sample interaction.

While the exhibition is live all artworks are an additional 19% off list price. New works will be added daily!

Watercolor artist Fahren Feingold imparts an ethereal quality to her unique works depicting the female form. Her watercolors featuring bold feminine nudes reference imagery from early 20th century French erotica, vintage American magazines from the 70s and 80s, and today’s Internet girls. The Los Angeles native moved to New York at the age of seventeen to study at the Parsons School of Design. After earning her BFA between Parsons and Glasgow School of Art, she worked as a fashion designer for top brands including Ralph Lauren, Nicole Miller, and J.Crew, among others. In 2016, her dreamy watercolors caught the eye of the legendary Nick Knight, who commissioned her to illustrate Paris Fashion Week for SHOW Studio. Since then, her work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions including “Moving Kate,” curated by Nick Knight for the SHOW Studio in London and The Mass in Tokyo; “The Vulgar” at The Barbican in London, curated by Judith Clark and Adam Phillips; “Red Hot Wicked” at Studio C Gallery in Los Angeles; as well as The Untitled Space group shows “UPRISE / ANGRY WOMEN” and “SECRET GARDEN” curated by Indira Cesarine and “LIFEFORCE” curated by Kelsey and Remy Bennett.

Celebrated as “a trailblazing artist on a meteoric rise” by Vogue, her watercolors have steadily gained recognition from collectors and critics alike for their sensitive, dreamlike colors, graceful brush strokes, and rendition of the female nude. Through her erotic depictions, Feingold gives new voices to women of the past and present while exploring larger notions of women in contemporary society. She had a solo show curated by Indira Cesarine at The Untitled Space in September of 2017, as well as a solo show presented by the gallery in collaboration with brand Fleur du Mal in 2018 titled “The Peep Show”. Her work was featured at SPRING/BREAK Art Show in both the “EDEN” (2019) and “(Hotel) XX” (2018) exhibitions presented by The Untitled Space, and was recently featured at Sotheby’s New York for the annual “Take Home A Nude” benefit exhibit and auction in October 2019.

INDIRA CESARINE “THE LABYRINTH”

Indira Cesarine created an immersive installation featuring photography, sculpture, video art, and mixed media works. The gallery was transformed into a maze through which viewers could experience her contemporary female gaze on Surrealism, a theme the artist has been exploring through a variety of mediums over the past several decades. “THE LABYRINTH” is a surreal odyssey that reveals through its passages a kaleidoscopic universe of subconscious realities bound by the contrasts of hyperrealism and ethereal symbolism. “THE LABYRINTH” explores the juxtaposition of contrasting opposites, dimension, distortion, and the power of light to engage and reflect on our own stream of consciousness while provoking the tangibility of perceived realities. The result is a journey through our fantasies and expectations, rendered through the lens of dreams and desires. “THE LABYRINTH” exhibition and installation feature Cesarine’s most recent body of work, as well as select works from her “Goddess”, “Les Fleurs du Mal”, “Pandora’s Box” and “ONLY YOU” series. Experience the works online in our viewing room!

JESSICA LICHTENSTEIN “DO THEY MAKE A SOUND?”

For SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2020, Lichtenstein’s immersive installation ponders the question, “If a tree falls in the forest, do they make a sound?” The exhibition presented a forest scene, with trees falling and leaves, in the form of female figures, scattering. The viewer became fully engaged in her conceptual landscape which featured snippets of news carved into the trees like love notes. The floor became a reflection of the scene with paper leaves in the shape of girls echoing statements as well as the voices, the “sounds” of these women. To create her environment the artist built the landscape with layers upon layers of images, a bombardment of colors and characters. The viewer was able to explore and discover unique details throughout the scene that played with notions of perception, including hidden moments and words that with closer view reveal themselves.

NICHOLE WASHINGTON “REBELLIOUS BLACK GIRL”

Nichole Washington is a visual artist known for her mixed media artworks exploring feminine strength, spirituality and identity. In 2016 she graduated from School of Visual Arts where she earned a master’s degree in digital photography. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions across the United States including the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. In 2017 she was one of ten recipients of the Enfoco Photography Fellowship. Washington’s work is featured in the inaugural issue of “MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora” and has been featured in several benefit auctions including The Heliotrope Foundation, Groundswell and Art4Equality. Her work has been exhibited in a number of group shows at The Untitled Space including BODY BEAUTIFUL, IRL: Investigating Reality, ONE YEAR OF RESISTANCE, and SHE INSPIRES.

In her latest exhibition, Nichole Washington pushes the boundaries of her identity by creating portraits that are bold, non-conforming and liberated. She uses manipulated photographs and bold paint strokes to figuratively and literally break out of “the box” of normative behavior. Through this process she creates super-heroine characters that exist in an imagined space meant for healing and transformation.
