TOBi × Kemba Remix + Deluxe Album

TOBi TAPS BRONX’S KEMBA FOR THE “180” REMIX

ANNOUNCES DELUXE VERSION OF ALBUM, STILL +

LISTEN TO THE “180” REMIX

TOBi releases a remix to the Twigg produced “180” featuring a guest verse from KEMBA and announces STILL + (pre-save link), a deluxe version of his debut studio album, STILL. The album explores the multiple facets of masculinity and the vulnerability he went through shortly after immigration into Canada. STILL’s production largely came from Toronto’s Free n Losh, Grammy-winning !llmind as well as a return link up from Take A Daytrip. The deluxe includes two new songs along with remixes to TOBi’s favorite tracks including the “City Blues” Remix, featuring The Game, a “24” Remix featuring Toronto’s best: Haviah Mighty, SHAD, Jazz Cartier & Ejji Smith and now, “180.”

“I’m excited to give STILL more life by adding songs, putting on for Toronto and showing the themes of my life. This 180 remix I wrote, juxtaposes my teenage self with my current self, describing the shit I used to get into with my friends. There were certain things you couldn’t tell me as a kid, unless you had earned my respect. I find that now, I am that guy to some of my young boys. I feel like a protector sometimes, or a light on their path. Also, Kemba is one of my favorite lyricists right now, so getting him on there was mandatory,” says TOBi.

2019 would prove to be an impactful year for the 26 year old, having his single “City Blues,” premiered on Zane Lowe, performing to a sold out crowd in his hometown of Toronto, being featured on The Game’s Born 2 Rap in “Carmen Electra,” as well as Party Pupils “One Two Things.” He continued the momentum performing an original song, “Beige” on the COLORS platform, having his single, “Ride” featured in the 2019 season of HBO’s Ballers as well as teaming up with Soulection’s Sango in bouncy single, “Faces.”

In speaking about the track, Dove says: “I’m so excited for my new single “Remember Me” to finally be released! I’ve been waiting for what feels like years to finally have this track and this new sound be out in the world and available to my fans, and I can’t believe that day is today! K-Pop Rookie boy band, CRAVITY, break into the music scene with their debut album “CRAVITY SEASON 1. [HIDEOUT: REMEMBER WHO WE ARE]”. Within the first hour of their debut, 6 celebratory hashtags took up the worldwide trends on Twitter, including #STANCRAVITY. ‘HIDEOUT’ symbolizes the nine members stepping out into the world through an experience unique to them, and creating a safe haven where they can lean on each other. Title track, “Break All The Rules,” tells the story of 9 youths with strong ambitions venturing out on their first journey together, overcoming obstacles, and continuing to move forward without hesitation; with hopes of providing solace for anyone going through the same emotions. Leader and Rapper, Serim, states ; “the album encompasses tremor of excitement, and our desire to give delight and comfort to our fans.”

Inspiration behind the name, CRAVITY, came to fruition through the combination of “Creativity” and “Gravity,” Starship Entertainment’s new boy band for the first time in five years since Monsta X. Consisting of nine members, [Serim, Allen, Jungmo, Woobin, Wonjin, Minhee, Hyeongjun, Taeyoung, Seongmin], CRAVITY, which is also an acronym for “Center of Gravity,” is meant to attract/gravitate listeners into their unique universe, by pulling them in with their creativity, charm, and pure talent. As humans, we all have our own “first experiences”; whether that be in school, society, or in a relationship. When encountering new relationships, we sometimes prepare ourselves by running from the starting line at full speed, hearts racing, butterflies in our stomach, but at the same time we are afraid. We are hopeful, but we also experience despair. CRAVITY, through their debut album, share these different emotions in an effort to convey a message of hope to each other, and most importantly, to their fans.

Another standout track, “JUMPER,” which was produced by Joohoney of Monsta X, showcases the spirit of rookies who are freely exploring this new world, and are excited to meet their new fans. “I personally tried hard to highlight the strengths of the members while producing songs. It’s even more meaningful for me to be in charge of producing the members’ debut album” says Joohoney.

Jungmo, reflects on the debut of CRAVITY; “it still feels dreamy to me, but I truly want to show you how we will continue to improve ourselves nonstop. All of our members and I have a lot of dreams that we want to achieve, and we will make sure to do our best to accomplish those.” Wonjin added, “It is an honor to have the title “CRAVITY” in front of my name…”

All seven tracks displayed on this album build up emotions step by step as you listen in full, maintaining tension and increasing immersion throughout. From the rock-styling of “Top Of The Chain,” to the fusion of Pop, Hip-Hop, and Trap heard on “Blackout,” and closing out with the final R&B/Pop track “Star,” which tells the story of wishing to be the “star” that shines through the dark sky for their fans, and to each other.

Vocalist Seongmin leaves us with a final statement; “thank you to the members who led me and supported me, so I can stand here today. As CRAVITY, we can’t wait to show you our music and performances that we’ve prepared for a long time.”

Coronavirus and Alcohol: What Are People Drinking During the Outbreak?

Crazy times. Surreal. Uncertainty. These are some ways we describe the Coronavirus outbreak and the consequences. But what about…

What we’re drinking and how that has changed.

According to Seriouslysmoked.com, a cooking and BBQ website compiled more than 200,000 tweets from the last 30 days and analyzed their contents using keywords, phrases, and hashtags.

Their findings will surprise you.

Surge in Sales

Perhaps the scars of Prohibition still run deep. An overriding theme in the collected data was panic buying and stockpiling. The figures tell a dramatic story.

Alcohol sales ending the week of March 21 surged 55 percent.

Teasing those numbers reveals some shocking but not altogether unpredictable trends that SeriouslySmoked.com noted.

The volume of 1.75 liter-sized bottles sold increased dramatically.

Cheaper and more affordable brands saw significant upticks.

Half-bottles and luxury brands, not so much.

The latter makes sense given the uncertain economic situation. Many who didn’t have a liquor budget are probably reconsidering it now.

However, it’s essential to put these data in perspective. Many restaurants aren’t open for dine-in customers. The wine you’d enjoy with your steak entree, you’re now consuming at home. That’s evident when you look at the meteoric rise of online sales.

Wine.com, for example, saw a 200 percent increase during this same time.

What Else Are People Buying—or Not Buying?

SeriouslySmoked.com uncovered some other trends that the industry statistics support. Unlike in Europe, Americans reserve their sparklers for celebrations. The pandemic has hit that continent hard too.

Consequently, Champagne says have taken a nosedive.

However, it’s probably not too much of a stretch to guess that Champagne will recover just fine when we all start painting the town red when all of this is behind us.

Interestingly, alcohol products that have seen slow declines are now enjoying something of a comeback, such as port and other fortified spirits.

Tequila and gin have also seen sales spikes, but that’s not all. Canned and packaged beverages are enjoying a similar surge.

Canned wine, for example, wasn’t a serious thing in the beginning. Now, with the outbreak, think again. The situation is fueling sales that rival its rise in popularity over recent years.

Boxed wine?

Yup. And probably for many of the same reasons of economy and getting more for your buck.

What else has changed?

The Industry Reinvents Itself

The unprecedented events have spurred many forces in the industry to reinvent themselves in innovative ways…

Restaurants and bars are sharing cocktail recipes as acts of solidarity to get through the crisis. Some are holding virtual tastings. We’re having virtual happy hours out of our homes.

Individuals are also reaching out to their favorite wineries and joining wine clubs in droves.

That’s especially significant given that most tasting rooms are closed. Cancellations of wine tours continue to grow with an uncertain future. The looming collapse of the summer tourist season weighs heavily on countless wineries.

Napa Valley visitor traffic brings $2.23 billion to the economy, according to the 2018 Economic Impact Report.

Luckily, e-commerce sales are surging with direct-to-consumer purchases, as SeriouslySmoked.com discovered too. Early figures show that online traffic has exceeded pre-pandemic volumes in some cases.

So there is hope that the industry will recover. But then what will happen?

Lingering Questions

The fact remains that the road ahead is uncertain, but likely has lots of twists and turns along its path. The questions that the industry and consumers ponder loom large.

Will wineries, breweries, and distilleries recover?

Will restaurants and bars open their doors again?

What is the future of online sales and its impact on brick-and-mortar stores?

One thing is clear from the data collected by SeriouslySmoked.com. Everyone is living in the moment. It’s hard to plan because the situation literally changes every day.

There are also some good takeaway messages from the responses of consumers and the industry.

We are supporting each other in a myriad of ways. The prospect of our favorite watering hole closing or hole-in-the-wall restaurant forever has given us pause.

Sure, we’ve adapted. The industry will survive too. It just might look a bit different on the other side. In the meantime, enjoy that new tipple that you’ve discovered. And support your local businesses.

Peaceful Relationships in Turbulent Times

3 Steps You Can Start Using Right Away

Are these scary times taking a toll on your most intimate relationship?

If so, you’re not alone.

Fear and stress can lead to impatience and anger. And before you know it, you’re in a gut-wrenching argument with the person you love—right when you need each others’ support and companionship the most.

Then if these painful disconnects go unresolved, you can find yourselves drifting apart. In China, the divorce rate shot up when quarantines were relaxed, and we’re already hearing the same in this country.

But it’s not from spending too much time together in the current lockdown. It’s because we’re not good at maintaining true closeness when we’re frightened.

From decades of helping people have happier, more fulfilling relationships, we offer these three steps for alleviating fear and amplifying love—even in highly stressful times.

Step #1: De-escalate yourself—before you try to de-escalate the argument

It’s natural to want to de-escalate the friction between you right away. But we recommend focusing on de-escalating yourself first.

This is not just taking a few breaths or counting to ten, although that’s useful. It’s a deliberate shift in your self-talk that dissolves your distress enough that your caring heart and clear mind come back to the forefront.

It starts with noticing what’s going on inside you and then naming it for what it is.

For instance, as soon as you recognize that you’re upset, you might say to yourself: “Yikes. My stomach is in knots. I’m raising my voice. I’m reacting as if the person in front of me is an enemy, not my beloved. I obviously got triggered and might be over-reacting… Hmmm…”

When you do that, your neurobiological self starts calming your inner fear-fest and restoring your ability to think clearly and connect warmly—which puts you in the right place to approach your partner again

One way to know you’re ready to reconnect is that your desire to get back to love will be louder than your impulse to be defensive and right.

Step #2 — Restore the loving connection between you—before you get into a conversation

It’s so tempting to launch into discussing whatever went awry so you can fix it quickly. But don’t!

The pain of an argument comes from the disconnect between the two of you—not from the issue that triggered it.

Here’s our favorite way to restore our connection before we talk:

Whoever’s ready first (that was usually Paige early on) approaches the other gently and says: “I’m sorry for my part.” And then Don would say: “I’m sorry for my part, too.” And as you might imagine, the distance would melt, and within seconds we were in the full embrace of love again.

Of course, this only works when it’s 100% genuine, and it might take some practice to discover what works for the two of you. But when you do, the subsequent conversations will go much better.

Step #3 —  Listen and speak to create deeper understanding—before discussing what to do next time

We got this step very wrong in our early years.

As soon as we were back in sync, we’d start talking about what to do differently—thinking that’s how we’d avoid reigniting the problem. Logical, yes. But it usually backfired. We’d start arguing again, or, if we agreed on a solution, it wouldn’t stick.

In time, we found that a real resolution only emerged from a full conversation. That meant having a compassionate, level-headed exchange where the goal of our listening and our speaking was to understand each other better.

This requires listening with a genuine curiosity about your partner’s experience of whatever went awry and why it was so upsetting. When practiced with patience, this kind of listening makes it safe for your beloved to speak openly and honestly.

Your speaking also wants to be compassionate. Meaning, while being honest about what upset you, you’re choosing language and tonality that are easy for your beloved to hear without getting triggered again. That means describing your feelings and perspective without blame.

Pitfall alert!

During this mindful make-up conversation—especially in these ultra-stressful times—it’s easy to slip back into criticizing your partner, defending yourself, or shutting down again. If that’s what happens (which we know it can) just go back to Step #1. De-escalating yourself again, and then… You get the idea.

These three steps—de-escalating yourself first, then restoring your loving connection, followed by listening and speaking for deeper understanding—provide a framework for creating patterns of communication that yield an ever-deepening bond of love.

We know the quest can be messy, especially now. Still the potential for experiencing new dimensions of extraordinary love is well worth it.

KAMALA HARRIS × ESSENCE

Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) speaks to ESSENCE.com during Black Maternal Health Week (April 11 – 17) on how COVID-19 has exposed the deep racial disparities in our country’s health care system. In her latest Kamala’s Corner column piece, We Can’t Let Up the Fight to End the Black Maternal Health Crisis – Especially Right Now, she talks to ESSENCE about:

  • The On-going Health Disparities Between Pregnant Black Women and White Women: “…Black women are three to four times more likely than White women to die from pregnancyrelated causes and twice as likely to suffer from life-threatening pregnancy-related complications. These disparities persist regardless of one’s income or education level. So, while this is a stressful time for any expectant mother, the potential ramifications that come with giving birth during a pandemic – and specifically a pandemic that is disproportionately impacting African Americans – is of particular concern to Black women…”
  • Underlying Health Conditions Affecting Black People During COVID-19: “We already know that people who have certain underlying health conditions are more at risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19. Sadly, data shows that Black people are 20 percent more likely to have asthma than our White counterparts. We are 40 percent more likely to have high blood pressure. And for Black women, we are three times more likely than White women to be diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that medical professionals warn could increase one’s chances of getting any kind of infection. Black women can’t afford not to be heard when their lives and babies are on the line, but they especially can’t afford to be shut out when we are going through a pandemic…”
  • The Black Maternal Health Momnibus: “That is why, this year, I was proud to partner with Rep. Lauren Underwood and Rep. Alma Adams to introduce the Black Maternal Health Momnibus. This historic package of bills that would tackle systemic health disparities by making much needed investments in social determinants that influence maternal health outcomes, like housing, transportation, and nutrition. It calls for more diversity in the perinatal workforce, so every mom is provided with inclusive care…”
