HAND × NAIL CARE

How to prevent hands from cracking and staying hydrated:

•Moisturize one to two times a day with a cream such as Cerave Cream or Aveeno Eczema Cream.

•Choosing a fragrance-free formula is also a good idea.

•It is generally best to opt for cleansers that only have gentle ingredients.

Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel prevents dryness without clogging pores and absorbs into the skin quickly without leaving any residue and is perfect for year-round use.

•Avoid antibacterial soap, which can be drying. Unless you’re instructed to use antibacterial soap for medical reasons, then just use the regular stuff instead.

•I don’t think you can use too many products as they will all be absorbed into your skin.

•Other products can be added to target specific concerns, like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid for acne, or hyaluronic acid for irritation or dryness.

How to prevent nails becoming brittle and weaker and advice for strengthening your nails:

•Wear gloves when hand washing dishes or cleaning.

•Do not use antibacterial soap.

•Moisturize cuticles with Aquaphor, Vaseline or CND Solar Oil.

DermaNail Conditioner – use twice a day; Helps dry, brittle nails.

•Biotin – a vitamin which accelerates nail growth (My favorite is vitafusion Gummies for Hair, Skin, and Nails because it contains a good amount of Biotin and is also a multivitamin).

•Keep nails short; file nails gently; avoid nail trauma (such as using them to open packages or remove lids from cans).

•For soft nails – use Nailtiques 2 Plus Lacquer or Sally Hansen Advanced Hard as Nails Strengthener.

•Use nail polish remover that does not contain acetone.

LUTE × MINI-SERIES

DREAMVILLE’S LUTE RELEASES NEW MINI-SERIES, “GOLD MOUF CHRONICLES”

In the ever-creative Dreamville fashion, rapper Lute (Dreamville/Interscope Records) has announced the release of his very own mini-series, “Gold Mouf Chronicles,” to aid in the promotion of his latest single “GED (Gettin Every Dolla).” The eight-episode online series, directed and edited by Alexander Hall, features the artist’s alter ego, Gold Mouf as he partakes in a host of activities and pranks. Just shy of five minutes, the first episode, “The Joy of Painting with Gold Mouf” is styled after a classic PBS program hosted by the late Bob Ross (The Joy of Painting).

The episode opens with a mild-mannered Lute who quickly transitions into the charismatic, though slightly foul-mouthed, Gold Mouf, who walks viewers through the painting of a Keith Haring-inspired spaceship. Both intriguing and informative, viewers will appreciate the rapper’s intellect and ability to seamlessly slip between his two personas. You can watch the first episode HERE.

The online series serves as the second wave of promotion for the recently released “GED (Gettin Every Dolla),” which serves as the opening theme song. The single was first teased through a barrage of cryptic commercials which appeared heavily on social media early this year. The accompanying Neal Farmer-directed video has racked up over 1MM views on YouTube. Lute continues to generate buzz for his undeniable skills as an emcee, as well as his incredible fashion sense. He can be heard on the Grammy-nominated RIAA certified Gold compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers III; receiving significant praise for his work on the track, “Under the Sun.” The certified Gold collaboration features the Charlotte-born, Lute, and fellow North Carolinians: superstar and label head, J-Cole, and popular rising artist, DaBaby. With regards to fashion, Lute has been featured on Vogue and Refinery29’s “Best Dressed Men” compilations. Most recently, Lute shined when he performed a halftime set during a Hornets vs. Rockets showdown at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. As part of the event, Dreamville gifted 7,500 fans with limited edition apparel.

La Galeria Elefante

For 2020 sustainable fashion followers will be excited to hear that La Galeria Elefante’s sought-after designs have just been launched online.

The collection is available to shop now, and includes the sought-after swishy printed cotton and silk midi-dresses that Ibiza-based Victoria Durrer-Gasse is famous for. Vogue Fashion Director Venetia Scott always pops into La Galeria when she’s in Ibiza, and Jasmine Hemsley and Sadie Frost were spotted in one of Victoria’s dresses recently.

Inspired by the carefree essence of Ibiza and the colours of India the dress collection online includes the gorgeous ‘Lyrical’ dress – a floor length backless dress with long sleeves. The six tiered skirt and full open back give it a bohemian look and it can be dressed up with cowboy boots or down with a simple pair of sandals. It has a matching sash that can be worn as a belt or around the neck like a scarf and the long sleeves are ruffled at the hems. Available in yellow with yellow stars, with short sleeves and is one size only. Fits a UK size 8 to 12.

Also online is the ‘Jody’ dress which comes in five beautiful prints and is a cotton maxi/midi dress. It has gathering detail at the skirt for a tiered effect, adding a light bounce and volume. Looks beautiful loose but can be worn belted too. Each dress is created using a beautiful hand block print. One size only, fits UK size 8 to 16.

Or choose the ‘Kimono’ dress in silk with a tie at the back, three-quarter length sleeves and a V neck with silk buttons.

Later this year new styles will be arriving including the ‘Susie’ a beautiful vintage-inspired pleated dress printed with teal/pink, lilac/blue or mint green botanical hand-blocked prints. Or try out a new gypsy blouse in delicate cotton with a thin scalloped edge, or check out the long-sleeved cotton onesie with contrasting red stitching on navy.

Handmade jewellery by Victoria this season includes dainty multi-coloured semi-precious stone necklaces that you can layer up, gypsy three vertical hoop earrings or teensy gold plated charms, (from 30 Euros) that include mini-pomegranates, elephants, stars, cacti and seahorses as collectable pieces to add to a chunky chain bracelet.

La Elefante’s philosophy is underpinned with the important message of giving back.  Many of the pieces in-store involve NGOs (such as Key To Freedom in Calcutta and SEWA in Delhi) and charities and artisans across the globe in far off places such as Madagascar and Nepal. All items are made supporting, encouraging & empowering women, as well as sustaining disappearing craftsmanship.

SUSAN E. FOSTER × CHARMING IMPOSSIBLES

For the many women (and men) stuck at home with abusers, children to care for, and the current stress of survival overall, domestic violence survivor, Susan E Foster, author of the new book Charming Impossibles: How Ordinary Angels Help Free the Hopelessly Stuck (Clovercroft Publishing) provides tips, advice, strategies, and resources to help them escape the invisible strings of abusers.

Foster calls them “‘Charming Impossibles’ – ‘charm’ is their deceptive invisible mask and convincing lure. ‘Impossible to satisfy’ is their secret weapon.”

But, how do you escape the abusers in your life? Why is leaving them behind while moving forward so difficult?

In this very revealing book, Foster shares her personal journey of surviving years of emotional abuse and isolation in plain sight…and the lessons learned. She also shares powerful and moving stories of others, unraveling the mysterious web of confusion surrounding abuse and overcoming difficult relationships.

In her article “Why Do We Self-Sabotage? You may be self-sabotaging without even realizing it,,” Dr. Ellen Hendriksen, a psychologist, states: “Self-sabotage can interfere with the best-laid plans and goals. Why do we do it? Turns out, there are many reasons why instead of shooting for the moon, we end up aiming right for our foot. Self-sabotage is any action that gets in the way of your intent…'”

She further adds, “There are countless ways we sabotage ourselves. So why do we do it? It comes down to four big reasons: Self-Worth, Control, Perceived Fraudulence, and Familiarity of that which we know is preferable to the unknown. To summarize: it all comes down to three words: fear of failure.”

Charming Impossibles is a story that describes a path to freedom for the apparently “hopelessly stuck.” The result is a credible, engaging, informative, supportive, and hopeful story.

Regaining Control in Uncertain Times: Advice from a Doctor/Cancer Survivor

As a doctor and entrepreneur, I spent most of my life seeking control – obsessively studying, planning, and working to guarantee my success. That’s why I wanted to be an entrepreneur in the first place – I wanted to be my own boss, in charge of my own fate. Despite my success, in 2013, I would lose every semblance of control in my life. In 2013, I was diagnosed with cancer.

My cancer diagnosis came with many emotions: anger, anxiety, uncertainty, depression. I felt alone and hopeless, like everything I had worked so hard for suddenly didn’t matter. I just had to “wait and see” if the chemotherapy worked; how sick I would be; if I could have a family one day; if I would ever have my regular life back.

In many ways, I see similarities between the way my cancer diagnosis impacted my life and how the current Coronavirus pandemic is affecting us all. Life as you know it has suddenly stopped. You don’t know when it will return to normal, and you may feel like you have completely lost control of your life.

Even though the unknowns of cancer treatment terrified me, certain strategies gave me a “sense” of control – and often times, that was enough. I hope that you can employ these strategies in the coming days and weeks to regain control in these uncertain times.

Exercise

Although chemotherapy prevented intense workouts, simply walking regularly released feel-good endorphins in my brain, and it’s something I had control over. Similarly, a self-imposed routine may help you cope with the uncertainty of the Coronavirus pandemic. Even though gyms are closed, consider doing body-weight workouts at home, YouTube fitness tutorials, or walking/running outside.

Breathe

You can also change your breathing patterns voluntarily, resulting in various powerful effects. For example, if you feel a wave of panic approaching, try taking deeper breaths using your diaphragm, which will cause your heart rate to slow and your body to relax.

Journal

Exercise and focused breathing are two techniques that worked for me, but it’s also important to remember what activities made you feel the best. Try journaling how different activities make you feel – more/less anxious, more/less in control, etc. This way, you can continue doing things that make you feel good, even when the Coronavirus is a distant memory.

Sometimes, challenging times are the kickstart you need to pursue a better life. After my cancer diagnosis, I completely transformed my stress-filled, unhealthy lifestyle. I overcame cancer, and I owe it all to positive lifestyle changes. If you are ready to start your journey to better health, check out my book “From Doctor to Patient.”

Improve Your Golf Skills With These Tips And Tricks From The Pros

Golf is a sport of the mind more than it is a sport of the muscle. In this game that has players of all ages, your performance depends more on technique more so than any other sport. There are so many nuances to golf and understanding that, then you will understand there are many ways to improve your game. Here are some tips and tricks that will help you boost your game, and lower that stroke count.

Try Swinging On A Plane

To help build consistency and fluidity on your golf swing, it is a good tip to consider the plane on which you are swinging the golf club. By trying to swing on a plane, you will find that this can be helpful for those that struggle with control and curves. The basics of the plane on your swing have you, the golfer, create an imaginary plane. This plane can be imagined as going through the golfer. During your swing, your golf club will appear parallel to the plane from the top of your swing, and right through to the point of contact. By keeping a plane on your mind when you are swinging your club, this can create a foundation, especially needed for beginners or those that are having trouble with consistency.

Posture And Positioning

Some golfers, especially beginners tend to focus too much on the swing and not enough on the stance. Like many sports, golf has basics and fundamentals. One of those fundamentals is having the proper stance and posture. Your posture will create the ideal height for your swing to feel more natural and make. This will give you the appropriate balance to create a seamless and smooth swing. To achieve this, make sure to create a good positioning with your feet, knees, and shoulders. Remember to keep your mechanics tight on your swing and continue right to the follow-through. It takes time to get your muscle memory in tune, but consistency is key to your swings.

Slow Down Your Tempo

Golf is a game of finesse, not power. Yes, everyone wants to have the furthest drive off the tee, but you aren’t just playing the game with a driving range. You need to play the game at your pace. This can translate to your golf swing, concentrating not on power but accuracy, swinging your club under control at all times. And it might even force you to sacrifice some yards off that swing, but you’ll make it up with keeping your total strokes low. At the end of a day at the course, you would rather come up a little short but on the green, than have driven that ball far and away from where you ideally want to be.

Relax

Golf swings are motions that require a lot of muscle movement. A lot of players focus too much on the power or technique of their swings that they forget to relax. This will give you the most and best quality of range of motion not only from your arms and upper body but also will translate down to your hips. Relaxing will also help prevent injuries as you are not tensed up and restricting your body and forcing uncomfortable movement.

Manage The Game

Golf is both a mental and physical sport. It is a game where your mind will get as much work if you allow yourself to see and approach the game that way. As mentioned previously, you can’t always rely on the power and shouldn’t be simply swinging wildly on your drives. Instead, take your time before you even get to the tee. Look at the hole at hand, and understand the best approach to it. Managing the game by making smart and calculated decisions will allow you to minimize the times you get yourself into problem situations. Choose to take shots that are low risk when beginning and learning the mechanics, take shots and use the clubs you are comfortable with. Play to your strengths and understand where your game is lacking. These decisions about playing smart will help you keep your scores low while you continue to improve your game.

With so many things that you can work on, golf is more a sport about improving your own game. If you can acknowledge where your limitations are, you can pinpoint those flaws to adjust and correct your game. This will involve changing both your physical motions and your mental approach, and soon you’ll see that improvement in your ability of the sport.

SCLC FIGHTS FOR POOR

With all Americans bearing the brunt of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis, Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., president and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), today called on President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress to make sure all Americans benefit from the nearly $1 trillion that will be spent to restore the health of citizens and the economy.

“I want to weigh in on behalf of regular people,” said Dr. Steele, who currently heads the civil rights organization co-founded and first led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “We have seen this socialist bailout of corporate America before. As the Trump Administration and Congress prepare to help some corporations, hand out new contracts and create new jobs to address this pandemic, we must ensure that billions ends up in the hands of the people who have been historically left behind. Poor people, black and brown people, must be recipients of these gifts of generosity that normally go to corporations.”

President Trump has said efforts are underway to financially assist corporations that have been hit hard by Convid-19, including the travel and cargo industries. He has announced plans to assist small businesses, but there are no specifics how those disbursements will be handled, and he has announced plans to give all families at least $2,400 to help them through the crisis.

“When it comes to bearing the weight, it is not fair that the corporations get the support when the rest of us starve,” Dr. Steele said.  “We saw our government bail out the banks during the housing collapse. We also bailed out the auto industry and Wall Street. Those industries recovered, but we didn’t. Most black and brown people lost their homes. We lost our wealth. Nearly 75 percent of poor people are living from check to check. Many of us have no health insurance. We can’t afford to take a day off work.”

Dr. Steele said the SCLC, which has focused on the plight of the poor and the voiceless since the days of Dr. King, has received calls for individuals and groups who are concerned about how individuals with no jobs and insurance will fair during this pandemic and recover after the crisis is over.

“They are asking, ‘Where are our leaders,’” Dr. Steele said. “They are not seeing them standing up to make sure the real money will flow down to the people most impacted. That is why the SCLC is taking a stand. We must fight to make sure our government does not repeat what has happened in the past. We need more than $1,200 to catch up in America. We will not be left behind this time.”

ABOUT THE SCLC:

Established in 1957, the SCLC, whose first president was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is a now an international organization made up of chapters and affiliates with programs that affect the lives of all Americans: north, south, east, and west. Its sphere of influence and interests has become international in scope because the human rights movement transcends national boundaries. For additional information about the SCLC, visit www.nationalsclc.org.
