The Hottest Looks Straight from the Catwalk for Spring/Summer 2020

Some people mistakenly assume that fashion is about conforming to the crowd. Believing that style is something shared by the masses, they shy away, writing it off as shallow, frivolous, and unimportant. Anyone who has ever had a flair for it, however, knows that this is not the case. Art made (quite literally) material, it is a way to express oneself, to make a bright and unashamed mark on the vibrant world around you.

The catwalks are, of course, where fashion is done best. Providing a glimpse into the minds of the most talented and fantastical designers, their shows are a source of inspiration – one that all of us can sip from. Sharing sartorial delights and chic ideas, here are a few of the looks you might want to add to your own wardrobe in spring/summer 2020.

Neon

Observers often ask themselves what the season’s key color is, but for spring/summer 2020, there isn’t one single shade to steal the limelight. Instead, it’s a certain palette that’s proven popular: neon. With an explosion of eye-catching color seen on catwalks ranging from Christopher Kane to Valentino, this a trend that’s bright, vibrant, and unashamed of making a statement. While the head-to-toe look might not be quite as easy to carry off in a more everyday environment, add a few key pieces to your wardrobe this spring to bring it up to speed.

Elegant and ethereal

Sometimes a fashion is not easily defined as a simple color or style: it’s more about an aesthetic. Elegant and ethereal is one of them, with diaphanous white dresses proving all the rage for spring 2020. We saw this everywhere from Alexander McQueen to Miu Miu, with ivory and porcelain outfits helping to bring a dreamy and romantic vibe to the stage. It’s not only about choosing the correct shade, however; lace, satin, and a delicate drape are essential to nailing the look this summer season.

Astrology and the occult

Another trend we saw repeated was intricate, zodiac-inspired outfits. The models’ garments were based on the occult and supernatural elements celebrated by those who believe in divination and destiny. The popularity of psychic readings has held a steady course for many years, helping people to find a clarity that might otherwise elude them in their daily lives. TheCircle suggests this might be because we have all at some point felt like we had something of a sixth sense. Now it seems the fashion world wishes to capture that sphere, with the astrological symbols and star-spangled constellations that typically accompany it and flowing navy and black silhouettes dotted with rich silver and gold detailing.

If you can’t stretch to such material masterpieces with your own meager budget, one way to incorporate the look into your wardrobe this summer is to pair long, dark dresses and/or leather skirts and trousers with richly detailed jewelry, such as extravagant earrings and arm bangles. Think witch meets fortune teller, and you’ll have got the look to a tee.

When it comes to updating your look this summer, a number of new and exciting styles are set to dominate in clothes stores and on the catwalks. Their diversity is key, as it allows you to find a fashion to match your preferred aesthetic, giving you the ability to remain on-trend while still expressing exactly who you are.

Yayoi Kusama x New York Botanical Garden

New Work by Celebrated Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama  The New York Botanical Garden Announces Highlights of 2020 Exhibition

KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature, Featuring New Work by Celebrated Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama

On view May 9‒November 1, 2020. Tickets go on sale February 26, at nybg.org/kusama

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) has announced highlights of its expansive 2020 exhibition KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature, featuring work by internationally celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929), including new experiences and immersive installations, four of which will debut at the Botanical Garden. NYBG is the exclusive venue for KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature. On view May 9 through November 1, 2020, the exhibition will be installed in and around the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, across the Garden’s 250 acres, and in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building.

Tickets for the landmark presentation go on sale February 26, 2020, at nybg.org/kusama. Visitors to New York can easily reach the exhibit in 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal in Midtown via Metro North to the Botanical Garden Station. They can also take advantage of the Exclusive Grand Hyatt New York Hotel & Ticket Package. The property is located next to Grand Central and visitors can book online at grandhyattnewyork.com, using the code NYBG. They’ll receive 10% off the nightly room rate at Grand Hyatt New York, two round-trip Metro-North Railroad tickets to NYBG and two KUSAMA All-Garden Pass tickets.

New Kusama Works Debut

The exhibition reveals Kusama’s lifelong fascination with the natural world beginning in her childhood spent in the greenhouses and fields of her family’s Nakatsutaya seed nursery. Multiple installations will be on view, including her signature mirrored environments and organic forms, colossal polka-dotted sculptures of flora, and mesmerizing paintings of plants and flowers and their diversity of colors and patterns. Several of these works are newly completed and will be shown along with archival works that have never been publicly exhibited, and more that will be on view for the first time in the United States.

Among the new works debuting are: Flower Obsession (2020), Kusama’s first-ever obliteration greenhouse where visitors apply coral flower stickers throughout the interior; Dancing Pumpkin (2020), a monumental, 16-foot-high sculpture presented on the Haupt Conservatory Lawn; Infinity Mirrored Room—Illusion Inside the Heart (2020), an immersive outdoor installation responding to changing light throughout the day and seasons; and, I Want to Fly to the Universe (2020), a brightly colored, 13-foot-high biomorphic form with a yellow face and polka dots.

Complementing the artworks on view, Garden horticulturists will create spectacular in- and outdoor displays through the seasons. Glorious displays of tulips and irises in spring transform into masses of pumpkins and autumnal flowers in fall. Kusama’s plant-inspired polka-dotted sculptures will be installed across the Garden in dialogue with meadow grasses, bellflowers, water lilies, and other plantings. In the Conservatory, stunning floral presentations will bring one of Kusama’s paintings on view in the Library Building to life through a seasonal progression of violas, salvias, zinnias, chrysanthemums, and other colorful annuals. In fall, displays of meticulously trained kiku (Japanese for “chrysanthemum” and one of the country’s most heralded fall-flowering plants) will create a dramatic finale for the exhibition.

Sketchbooks, Paintings & Polka Dots

The Exhibition will include works from throughout Kusama’s prolific career and multifaceted practice. On display in the Mertz Library Building, her sketchbooks from adolescence signal the beginning of Kusama’s connection with the natural world that has inspired her aesthetic and practice across mediums. This early work also portends avant-garde ideas she developed while living in New York between 1958 and 1973, as a contemporary of Joseph Cornell, Eva Hesse, Donald Judd, and Claes Oldenburg, and continues to explore rigorously today. The Library Building presentation will also feature examples of her botanical sketches, paintings, works on paper, biomorphic collages, assemblages, and recent soft sculpture and canvas works depicting flora and their limitless variety of patterns. Life (2015) provides an immersive experience as visitors navigate a circular space enclosing polka-dotted forms with mosaic surfaces. Pumpkins Screaming About Love Beyond Infinity (2017) comprises a mirrored cube reflecting an infinity of polka-dotted pumpkins. It is accompanied by a statement by the artist that reads, in part, “My pumpkins, beloved of all the plants in the world. When I see pumpkins, I cannot efface the joy of them being my everything, nor the awe I hold them in.”

Public Programs

KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature will be accompanied by a roster of public programs for all ages, including lectures; film screenings of Kusama Infinity (2018) and Kusama’s Self-Obliteration (1967); fun-filled Polka Dot Picnics in spring; and Pumpkin Power Weekends in October with activities amid thousands of pumpkins of myriad shapes and sizes. Artist-designed merchandise will be available for purchase at NYBG Shop and there will be special Kusama- inspired menu items offered in the Hudson Garden Grill and Pine Tree Café. The KUSAMA All-Garden Pass ticket includes access to the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building, Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, Flower Obsession (2020) obliteration greenhouse, and garden features, including the Rock Garden, Tram Tour, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, and grounds. The KUSAMA All-Garden Pass + Infinity Mirrored Room ticket includes KUSAMA All-Garden Pass access, plus timed entry to the Infinity Mirrored Room—Illusion Inside the Heart immersive outdoor installation. Tickets go on sale for NYBG Patrons and Members on February 19, 2020, and to the general public on February 26, 2020.

Visit nybg.org/kusama for additional ticketing information and pricing and to sign up for e-mail alerts on the exhibition.  The New York Botanical Garden is a museum of plants located at Bronx River Parkway (Exit 7W) and Fordham Road. Featuring high-octane animated footage from the “SOUND & FURY” film, the visual captures the breakneck action, frenetic pace, and intensity of the artist’s immersive vision set to psychedelic disco breaks, ripping guitars, and stadium-size hooks. The video was directed by Simpson’s “SOUND & FURY” collaborator, founder of influential animation studio Kamikaze Douga, and sought-after filmmaker Jumpei Mizusaki.

Next up, Simpson kicks off his much-anticipated “Sturgill Simpson: A Good Look’n Tour” on February 21 in Birmingham, AL. Meeting widespread demand from audiences everywhere, it visits over 40 cities with two-night stands scheduled for Asheville, NC, Detroit, MI, Minneapolis, MN, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, CA, and Nashville, TN. Numerous dates have already sold out in advance. Presented by AEG Presents, the tour features special guest and acclaimed country breakout star Tyler Childers. Simpson has also partnered with CID Entertainment to offer travel packages with all net proceeds benefitting the Special Forces Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides immediate and ongoing support to the Special Forces community and their families. $1 from each ticket sold for the Sturgill Simpson: A Good Look’n Tour will also be donated to benefit the Special Forces Foundation.  Tickets and more information on the exclusive travel offers can be found HERE. Check out the confirmed itinerary below.

Anointed a critical favorite for its uncompromising scope, endless attitude, and flawless execution, “SOUND & FURY” closed out 2019 as a fixture on numerous year end lists, including those by Rolling Stone, Billboard, NPR, Vulture, Esquire, Noisey, and more. Simpson’s live performances and album have been met with fan and critical praise alike:

“A PROUDLY REBELLIOUS RECORD.” – Los Angeles Times

“Sound and Fury begins much in the same way as Simpson’s recent live set: with AN EXPLORATORY PSYCH-BLUES JAM …As a guitarist, Simpson is uninterested in conventional guitar god shredding; his playing is CURIOUS, FLUID AND FULL OF WONDER.” – Rolling Stone

“…he can glide between synth-rock, glam, dancefloor-fillers; songwriting is king in his world. It doesn’t matter if he’s playing a dreamy campfire song or a two-minute instrumental stomper. Simpson is the one dictating his sound…” – Pitchfork

“Anyone who says guitar music is dead hasn’t listened to the new Sturgill Simpson record.” – Entertainment Weekly

“Sound & Fury is the best case for musicians using Netflix in wild ways…..THE YEAR’S MOST HYPNOTIZING LONGFORM MUSIC VIDEO.” – Indiewire

“The Sound & Fury closer is the BEST THING SIMPSON HAS EVER DONE …It’s hard to imagine any other rock ’n’ roll show achieving anything like the same visceral power.” – Billboard

“POWERHOUSE PERFORMANCE … Simpson was here, in a cozy punk club, seeking a real connection, making a real change in the world.” – The Washington Post

About Sturgill Simpson:

A true iconoclast, GRAMMY® Award-winning singer and songwriter Sturgill Simpson has quietly, yet irrevocably disrupted country, rock, and culture at large since his 2013 independent debut High Top Mountain. In 2014, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music garnered his first GRAMMY® Award nod and claimed spots on Rolling Stone’s “50 Best Albums of 2014” and NPR’s “50 Favorite Albums of 2014.” 2016 saw him reach a pivotal turning point on A Sailor’s Guide To Earth. It would be honored with the GRAMMY® Award for “Best Country Album.” Like only he can, Simpson threw the rulebook out the window and flipped everything upside down on 2019’s “SOUND & FURY.” Produced by Simpson, the bulk of the album was recorded primarily at the McGuire Motor Inn in Waterford, Michigan, with his bandmates Bobby Emmett, Chuck Bartels, Miles Miller, who all serve as co-producers along with GRAMMY nominee John Hill (Cage The Elephant, Portugal. The Man, Bleachers). It lived up to his pledge to deliver as “a sleazy, steamy rock n roll record” and was accompanied by a Netflix anime film of the same name, which merged American rock music with Japanese animation in a revolutionary new way. Last year, he also contributed “The Dead Don’t Die” as the original theme song for writer and director Jim Jamursch’s acclaimed The Dead Don’t Die film. Additionally, he remains committed to philanthropy supporting non-profit organizations such as the Special Forces Foundation.

Mama Medicine’s “Multi-Sensory” Readings

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown welcomes Mama Medicine, expert in ancient multi-sensory Medicine Readings, as the latest addition to the iconic Resident Healers Program.

Mama Medicine, whose given name is Deborah Hanekamp, now joins the Resident Healer Program with a unique health and wellness offering known as Medicine Readings. Having previously been named “Fashion’s Favorite Healer” by Vogue magazine, her work integrates more than 17 years of experience and wisdom in the healing arts. Her Medicine Readings blends ancient knowledge from across a variety of traditions. At the end of every Medicine Reading, Deborah prescribes spiritual homework and a ritual bath. These beautiful baths (with flowers, crystals and herbs), along with her unique aesthetic and approachable personality, have garnered Mama Medicine tens of thousands of global followers. In a world of gurus and self-help, Mama Medicine helps us connect to the inner shaman within us all: the power of love.

Created by Spa Director Tara Cruz, the Resident Healers Program launched on International Women’s Day 2018 to highlight three exceptional women with diverse offerings within the health and wellness space in New York City. Each of the three Resident Healers provide unique, mindful experiences for guests during one-one-one private appointments at The Spa. Deganit Nuur is an acupuncturist, herbalist and clairvoyant; Rashia Bell is a crystal healer and mediation master; and Snow Shimazu is a travel wellness expert, advanced body work educator and all-around wellness guru. In 2019 the Program once again expanded in time for International Women’s Day, with the addition of Michelle Pirret, International Sonic Alchemist. Each of these leading women offers guests seeking something greater than the traditional spa service.

In-Person Medicine Readings

Mama Medicine will offer in-person Medicine Readings for in-house guests, residents and local clientele.

A Medicine Reading is a healing modality created by Deborah Hanekamp designed to empower people to be their own healers. It involves the combination of conversation, an aura reading, and a healing ritual. It’s a very collaborative experience – the client shares what they are calling in or clearing out of their life, and then Deborah, based on what she sees, shares hidden talents, gifts or blocks that are coming up. In the ceremony, Deborah uses crystal singing bowls, song and scent to cleanse, bless and protect. During the session the client will lay on a heated bed of amethyst and black tourmaline crystals. 60 Minutes / USD 555

Mama Medicine is available for private appointments through March, April, May and June.

To book an individual consultation with Mama Medicine or any of the Resident Healers, contact The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown at 646-880-1990.

Tickets for each event will be distributed 15 minutes prior at the Grace Rainey Rodgers Auditorium.

In Gallery 217, the Astor Court, Vincent Chong, a queer, mixed-race Chinese American artist, will explore art and identity using gold calligraphy and festive fans through 15-minute performances presented every 45 minutes.

Art Activities and Demonstrations

Several artist-led workshops will be offered as part of Lunar New Year Festival: Year of the Rat. Zodiac Zones, for example, will invite guests to discover and learn about their zodiac signs and proudly wear their zodiac animal button. Visitors of all ages can try their hand at different creative workshops—from creating a movable dragon toy that brings good luck in Fierce Dragon Creations to expressing themselves with calligraphy under the guidance of master Chinese calligrapher Zhou Bin from iCanMandarin and designing a pellet drum in Den-den Daiko Drum Making, and more. Families can celebrate and learn through food in a Wu-Wo Tea Ceremony & Bubble Tea Gathering with Ten Ren Tea and Ginseng Co. and a Hand-Pulled Noodle Demonstration. All are welcome to join artist and educator Emily Mock in Festive Feast, where participants can add to the communal paper feast installation for the kitchen gods.
