Top Tips to Cut Prom Costs and Still Guarantee a Great Night

Today, high school proms have evolved into red carpet events that can easily cost families hundreds of dollars. But the good news is that, according to the experts, there’s no need to blow your savings account on prom – you can do it on a budget and still ensure that your child has the time of their lives. Whether it’s buying outfits, arranging transport or getting hair and makeup on point, there are plenty of budget-friendly alternatives that you can swap for while still making sure that your teen looks and feels a million dollars on the night. We’ve put together some of the best money-saving tips for parents for the upcoming prom season.

#1. Saving on the Prom Dress or Tux:

If you’ve got a daughter who’s going to prom, then chances are her dress is going to take the biggest chunk out of your budget. But the good news is that there are several things you can do in order to save money on the dress, or at least get a more value-for-money option. And the same goes if your teen is wearing a tux.

Buy online – online shopping is a godsend when it comes to getting a prom dress or a tux. You can often find budget-friendly options at online stores. For instance, Jovani stock dresses to suit every budget (without the quality being compromised) which might be worth exploring . And, don’t just look at dedicated prom sites too; you may be surprised at what comes up in the evening dress section of your favorite online clothing store or the suit section at a popular menswear retailer.

Rent – since the dress or tux is only going to be worn for the one night, renting instead of buying is a sensible option – however, this will mean that your teen has to be extra careful not to damage their outfit on the night. If you’re willing to take this risk, renting instead of purchasing outright can save a significant amount.

Second hand – finally, whether you’re getting a dress or a tux for your teen, don’t rule out second-hand options. There will be plenty of parents selling off last years’ prom outfits at bargain prices.

#2. Save on Accessories:

When it comes to accessorizing a prom outfit, you can end up spending much more than you’d bargained for if you’re not careful – especially if your teen wants the full works! Keep these tips in mind to make sure that you stay within your budget:

Keep it simple – according to the experts, this year it’s all about the earrings – so investing in a stunning pair of earrings will finish the outfit off nicely. Excessive bling isn’t on trend anymore, so there’s no need to go all out with necklaces, bracelets and rings. If you’re choosing accessories for a tux, a pair of quality cufflinks are ideal. Don’t forget that these are items that can be used again and again, so they make perfect graduation gifts too.

Shoes – there’s plenty of dancing to be had at prom, so don’t overspend on shoes that are probably going to be coming off within the first couple of hours.

#3. Showstopping Makeup and Hair on a Budget:

Makeup is a must for most teenagers at prom – whether it’s a full face or a slick of tinted moisturizer. When it comes to makeup:

Multitasking products are your friend – if you’re getting new cosmetic items for your teen for prom, then opt for items that can double up, like lipsticks that double as cheek stain, or eye pencils that can be used for filling in brows.

Use what you have – there’s no need to experiment with an entirely new makeup look for prom. If your teen already wears makeup, chances are they have a look in mind that they are comfortable with, and the products that they already have will probably do just fine.

Practice makes perfect – when it comes to hair, going to a salon might not be necessary. Check out Pinterest and YouTube tutorials, and spend some time practicing styles beforehand so you can DIY it.

#4. Arrive in Style for Less:

Celebrating with a meal and arriving to prom in style can be pricey, so keep these tips in mind:

Check out coupon sites – websites like Groupon can be an ideal place to look if you want to find the best deals on limo hire in your area, plus discounted meals at posh restaurants fit for a prom queen or king.

Host it yourself – instead of a fancy restaurant, hosting a pre-prom dinner at your home or a cheap local venue can help to cut costs, especially if you get all the parents involved when it comes to bringing a dish along.

Do you have any money-saving tips for prom of your own to add? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.

On The Verge of Stardom: Q+A With Rising Female Rapper, Malaynah

You just released your new single ‘Outta My Face’ tell us about the inspiration behind this song.

The inspiration behind my new single ‘Outta My Face’ was my energy and positivity I have within me. I wrote that song to inspire others to have the same energy that I do and surround themselves with that same positivity as well.

You will be performing at the upcoming Welcome To The West music festival, how do you feel about being the only female rapper in the lineup?

Being the only female on the Welcome to the West lineup means so much to me. I get to represent all the ladies on this lineup with so many legends. It makes me feel pumped up and ready to show everyone what I bring to the table.

What are you most excited about for this performance?

I’m most excited to let my fans hear some of my unreleased music I’ll be performing.

Cardi B reposted your video where you freestyled over her track “Money” and it hit over 12 millions view on her Instagram. What was your initial reaction?

When Cardi B reposted my freestyle video, my initial reaction was “NO F****** WAY.” I couldn’t believe it. I was so happy and proud of myself. That day was just filled with all kinds of emotion.

We hear you began writing songs when you were 12 and secretly rapped in front of your bathroom mirror. When did you decide to share your talents in public and what made you decide to not keep it a secret anymore?

Performing in front of my family and getting the support I needed to actually put myself out there played a really big role with my decision to start posting my videos on social media platforms. Then when I got the response everyone in my family was telling me I was going to get, it made me just want to keep going.

What or whom inspired you to start rapping?

What inspired me to start rapping was the reaction I would get when I would perform. When people were listening to what I was saying, and shared that a line I wrote hit home for them. Their reaction was just priceless. So I figured, if I can help people get through something by my words, I want this forever.

What are you most excited about in your career right now?

Right now, I’m mostly excited about all the new songs and projects that are going to be dropping soon.

Do you have any new upcoming projects in the making?

Yes I have an E.P. that is going to be coming out very soon!

If you could have one dream dinner guest, who would it be?

If I could go to dinner with ANYONE, I think I would want to sit down with J. Cole.

To see Malaynah perform at Welcome to the West you can purchase tickets online: http://thewestfestival.com

Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair

Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair (JHFAF) closed its first edition on Sunday, September 15, 2019, with strong sales and high attendance. Over the four-day event, JHFAF reports about 2,000 visitors with $2 million in sales. JHFAF brought out some of Jackson Hole’s most prominent locals, as well as new visitors, all excited to see the museum-quality fair presented within Jackson Hole’s thriving arts community.

The fair presented 50 exhibitors who brought works that they felt matched the personal aesthetics of the Jackson Hole community. Works ranged in genre and price from world-renowned artists like Maynard Dixon, Ed Mell, Billy Schenck, Eanger Irving Couse, Thomas Hart Benton, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Ed Ruscha and Sam Francis.

Fair Director Rick Friedman said, “Because JHFAF was the first international fine art fair in town, I think both collectors and exhibitors did not know what to expect. I’m so happy to report that all attendees I spoke to said it was far beyond their expectations. We heard the repeated comments, ‘loved it, fantastic, and terrific’ by fairgoers as they left the fair. We produced a multi-genre fair, with works within the Contemporary, Modern, Native American and Wildlife genres, with many of the early to mid 20th century pieces finding new homes. I see this as a breakthrough event that presented world-class and museum quality offerings across all of our showcased genres and I think the sales prove that. It was the wealthiest collectors as a percentage of the attendance of any of my fairs ever, over 10 years. ”

Exhibitors reported strong sales with  Redfern Gallery, Nieto Fine Art, Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery, Montana Trails and Mongerson Gallery reporting mostly sold out booths.

Throughout the weekend, guests were treated to special programs and events including artist Q&A’s with Barbara Van Cleve, Donald Martiny, Larry Pirnie and Sarah Winkler. During the fair, JHFAF also produced a silent auction, which raised money for its institutional partner, The National Museum of Wildlife Art.

JHFAF presented several awards throughout the weekend including the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award to the late John Nieto and the 2019 Art Collectors of the Year Award to Anne Phillip, the 2019 Sculptor of the Year award to Bart Walter and the Contemporary Artist of the Year award to Paul Villinski. Quotes from Galleries:

Local dealer, Miriam Diehl of Diehl Gallery said, “It’s been incredibly exciting to see an art fair of this caliber in Jackson Hole. It’s been wonderful to have so many like-minded dealers and the camaraderie among them has been amazing and encouraging. It’s been tremendously successful for us and we look forward to the second edition.”

John Nieto Gallery who was awarded the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award for the late John Nieto said, “The visitors have been very quality. They know the work and the artist’s history. We’ve even had a lot of collectors who own Nieto’s work come by. There have been many great conversations about art.”

Rey Redfern of Redfern Gallery said, “The show has been much more than I expected. I’ve met a lot of people and I’ve sold a lot of paintings. They’ve been paintings I’ve had tucked away for a long time, but they’re high quality and that’s why they sold.”

Brenda Linscott from Endeavor Fine Art said, “We had a chance to bond with our space and develop a sampling of five of our artists who we’ve worked with for many years. It’s been so nice for us to see our artists in a visual conversation with other artists at the fair. To walk through the show and see what everyone else brought has been really incredible too. There really is room for everyone.”

Thomas Paul of Thomas Paul Fine Art said, “JHFAF did a great job putting this  fair together with such an excellent variety of artists on display. It was so nice to see such a powerful exhibition of contemporary art  brought to Jackson Hole.”

Shaylen

Rising Los Angeles songstress Shaylen unveils the video for “Own Way” today, the lead single from her debut EP Highs and Lows out now via The Heavy Group/Republic Records—watch HERE!

Of the video, Shaylen says, “The video for ‘Own Way’ is pretty straight forward. We all struggle with saying no. Saying no to a toxic ex, saying no to substances, saying no to media addiction etc. I always find myself doing well and then I get in my own way. The struggle is real folks.”

The song, produced by Jonas Jeberg [Selena Gomez, Panic! At The Disco], is an empowering anthem about changing yourself for the better, with the relatable lyrics, “I gotta get out of my own way.”

Stay tuned for more from Shaylen this fall!

Hailing from Dallas, TX, vocalist and songwriter Shaylen is both equal parts veteran and neophyte to the music industry. A former pop group member turned solo star, Shaylen became classically trained in piano and took master classes at the world renowned Septien Entertainment Group (home to other superstars like Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato); and after a short-lived stunt in a successful global touring group Shaylen found herself moving to Los Angeles to re-start her music career. While working multiple jobs and pushing out her music on social media, she began to create a sizable buzz in the industry. But it was through her songwriting and producing skills that she found her true identity, inking a publishing contract and collaborating with up and coming EDM producers on Soundcloud. Fast forward to a major deal with Republic Records and the release of several breakout singles, this is the story of a rising powerhouse who is back…for the very first time.

Harry Connick, Jr.

Following the announcement of his album True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter (Verve Records, October 25), Harry Connick Jr. releases the video for the first single “Just One of Those Things.” Watch the video here.

Directed by Bobby Bruderle, the video showcases an exciting use of MIDI technology to create a visual orchestra. Each time Harry plays a note on the keyboard it sends a signal to the hanging lights surrounding him to synchronize and light up, each note coordinated with a specific light bulb. “This is one of my favorite Cole Porter songs,” says Harry. “It’s actually a sad song, but I had so much fun making the video, I was smiling the whole time… I LOVED the concept and the simplicity of me, some bare light bulbs and a piano.”

After 30 million albums sold worldwide, 13 No. 1 jazz albums in the United States, and a music, film, television and Broadway career spanning three decades, Harry Connick, Jr. returns with a sensational new record, True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter.

Comprised exclusively of Cole Porter compositions, True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter highlights Harry’s talents as a pianist, singer, arranger, orchestrator, and conductor, as he breathes life into the popular songs. It is not surprising that Porter would appeal to Harry since, like Harry, he wrote both music and lyrics and redefined what it meant to be the complete songwriter. Harry, whose success in several styles of music as well as film, theater, and television, has similarly reshaped the notion of what it means to be the complete entertainer.

Bon Appétit

The renowned list ranks the country’s best in the October issue and on bonappetit.com; Meet the winners at the Hot 10 Party in Brooklyn this fall

Bon Appétit has unveiled the Hot 10: America’s Best New Restaurants 2019. The annual list is now available in the October issue and on bonappetit.com.

Taking the coveted top spot is Los Angeles’ Konbi, a 10-seat countertop space from two chefs inspired by their travels to Tokyo. It joins past winners like Oklahoma City’s Nonesuch (2018), New Orleans’ Turkey and the Wolf (2017), and Atlanta’s Staplehouse (2016).

“This is a more casual and truly fun bunch of restaurants than ever before,” said Julia Kramer, Bon Appétit‘s deputy editor who traveled to more than 30 cities and ate in over 200 restaurants to compile this year’s list. “These places are driven by passion and purpose, and are serving exceedingly delicious, deeply personal food that defines what it means to eat in America right now.”

Other noteworthy spots on the list include Dallas’ Khao Noodle Shop featuring authentic Laotian dishes (No. 2), Detroit’s Ochre Bakery serving only breakfast and lunch (No. 4) and Matt’s BBQ Tacos, a taco-slinging truck parked in Portland, Oregon (No. 9). Bon Appétit also crowned Dallas the Restaurant City of the Year, and its editors picked up a few new obsessions, including wine bars where you can take the wine with you and bartenders who have rebranded the mocktail into the drink you want to order. Read more in the October issue on newsstands and on bonappetit.com now.

For one night only, Bon Appétit will bring the Hot 10 chefs together to serve the bites and drinks that won us over this year. Tickets for the Hot 10 Party on October 19 in Brooklyn, NY are on sale now at BAHot10.com. Event partners include Talbott Vineyards, LaCroix Sparkling Water, Field Roast and Corto® Olive Oil.
